Luis Palau is a well-known international evangelist.\u00a0 He\u2019s preached to tens of millions of people all around the world.\u00a0 When his son, Andrew, was a teenager, he was having none of it.\u00a0 His parents knew there was trouble.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 They did know there was trouble.\u00a0 They had found drug paraphernalia.\u00a0 They had tried to send me to a camp down in southern Oregon, and I just staunchly refused.\u00a0 I think they knew that, \u201cIf anything good was going to happen in this boy\u2019s life, it\u2019s going to be God\u2019s work.\u201d\u00a0 They knew it just was going to take a miracle of God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut they also always believed that I would become a man of God.\u00a0 So, in the midst of the most challenging situation, they always had confidence in the Word of God that God could radically transform, and change, and make a difference, and even give me something to do in tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 Many times we have shared with listeners the verse in Third John.\u00a0 Third John 4 says, \u201cI have no greater joy than this that my children are walking in the truth.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve said to a lot of parents, \u201cIf that\u2019s true, then I think the converse may be true as well.\u00a0 \u2018I have no greater pain than this\u2014if my children aren\u2019t doing well spiritually.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 There\u2019s almost nothing harder for a mom or a dad than to see a son or a daughter who is <em>not<\/em> doing well in their faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Barbara and I have experienced that.\u00a0 Someday I hope we can tell more of the whole story around that, but there\u2019s no love like that of a mom and a dad for their son or daughter.\u00a0 When they aren\u2019t doing well, I don\u2019t care what else is happening in your life\u2014something\u2019s just haywire.\u00a0 It\u2019s not right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a guest with us on the broadcast today who knows firsthand what it\u2019s like.\u00a0 Shall we use the metaphor of what is talked about in the story of the prodigal in the New Testament?\u00a0 He knows what it\u2019s like to slop with the hogs. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Would that be an overstatement, Andrew?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 That\u2019s right in the strike zone.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s the voice of Andrew Palau, and he joins us on the broadcast.\u00a0 Andrew and his wife Wendy have three children.\u00a0 They live in the Portland area.\u00a0 He is an evangelist for\u2014maybe you recognize that last name, Palau.\u00a0 There\u2019s a gentleman from Argentina whose name is Luis Palau, who has had an evangelistic association.\u00a0 How many years now?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Over 50 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Fifty years of faithfully proclaiming the Gospel.\u00a0 Now, you\u2019re on the team with your dad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can you believe it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But it wasn\u2019t always so; was it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Joke\u2019s on me.\u00a0 I\u2019m like a poster child for how this thing works out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have written a book, and it\u2019s interesting.\u00a0 It\u2019s called <em>The Secret Life of a Fool.<\/em>\u00a0 You begin the book with a story of a plane crash.\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m just curious.\u00a0 Why do you begin with that illustration and that story? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s interesting.\u00a0 I had been thinking about putting a tool together, which would be my testimony\u2014the Gospel around my testimony\u2014for many years\u2014for 18 years now since I came to know Christ.\u00a0 I was waiting and waiting for the Lord\u2019s timing.\u00a0 I felt like I needed to get some maturity under my belt and this sort of thing.\u00a0 I had organized to have someone come and help me to put some of these thoughts together.\u00a0 We were meeting in Jamaica; my wife is Jamaican.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn the week before he came out to see us, we were on a plane that crashed on the beach in Kingston, Jamaica.\u00a0 It just seemed like it was just of the Lord, that in that time, where I recognized some things that I talked about\u2014that Scripture tells us about\u2014that our life is like a vapor, and God doesn\u2019t promise us tomorrow.\u00a0 Those truths just hit so deeply in this new way for me.\u00a0 It just seemed like a perfect introduction\u2014as if the Lord doesn\u2019t waste anything.\u00a0 So He\u2014maybe it was a bit too boring\u2014so He gave me a nice intro.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re talking pretty calmly about this plane crash.\u00a0 Were you in a plane, going down, thinking, \u201cThis is it\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, as a matter of fact.\u00a0 We were in a plane, and it was going down; but we were unaware of it.\u00a0 It was me, my wife, my three children.\u00a0 It was a 737\/800\u2014you know\u2014the stretch 737s that they put extra passengers on.\u00a0 We were in a squall of a rainstorm.\u00a0 The pilot made a mistake\u2014overshot the runway.\u00a0 In an instant, we crashed\u2014no warning.\u00a0 The results were terrible.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFortunately, it was one of the few plane crashes of its category in which no one died; but it was very clear to us that God had intervened and protected us, and He was going to use this.\u00a0 I think the book is one of the ways in which He might bring glory to Himself and help us to recognize that life is serious and we have some work to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The book really is the story of a lot of bad decisions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, endless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, starting in your teenage years\u2014and the thing I had to ask you\u2014you were a pyromaniac!\u00a0 You had a lot of experience with gasoline.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I think boys obviously seem to be inclined toward these kinds of things.\u00a0 Now, people put Mentos<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> in a Pepsi<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> bottle and watch it explode; but we just took it to the wrong level in all kinds of stuff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Tell our listeners about dropping the one-gallon containers of gasoline off the overpass.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we had the best intentions, of course.\u00a0 We would fill up the old apple cider jugs\u2014you remember, with the little handle there?\u00a0 We\u2019d fill it with gas, and put a piece of paper in the top, and do a little Molotov cocktail off of this bridge, onto this road.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019d wait until cars were maybe a mile or so back; and as they\u2019d come around the corner, we\u2019d drop it.\u00a0 It would make a big fireball.\u00a0 We\u2019d see the cars sort of lock up their brakes and fishtail.\u00a0 We\u2019d chuckle and run off in the woods.\u00a0 It was ridiculous.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI struggled in putting the stories together for the book because it\u2019s sort of shameful.\u00a0 Even looking you guys in the eyes, I\u2019m going, \u201cOh, brother.\u00a0 Do we really have to go there?\u201d; but people do ridiculous things.\u00a0 They get involved with stuff, and a lot of people can relate.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, this is Andrew Palau, the son of international evangelist, Luis Palau, who is running off doing these acts of vandalism near your hometown.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 And there are many others I couldn\u2019t put in the book.\u00a0 My dad was worried like, \u201cDo you think the police could come after you for some of this stuff?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t think so.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Andrew, what were you doing?\u00a0 You grew up in a home where you heard the Gospel.\u00a0 You saw the love of Christ.\u00a0 It was pretty clear.\u00a0 Your family was walking with the Lord, and you were kind of off here doing your own thing.\u00a0 What was going on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think it was fairly typical rebellion, you know.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t really that stereotypical, \u201cI hate God, and I hate religion.\u00a0 You can\u2019t shove it down my throat\u201d; but it was just this love of self\u2014this selfish, self-centered attitude.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, you talk about it in your book.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t have a father wound.\u00a0 You said your dad was really a good father, and your mom and dad committed to each other, and raised you to fear God, to obey Him.\u00a0 This really became\u2014being a fool\u2014really became a point of identity for you; didn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is how you gained acceptance into the crowd and to who you ran around with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\u00a0 I think finding a little place where you can do the most ridiculous thing at night and laugh about it the next day.\u00a0 That\u2019s kind of how I just sort of put notches in my belt and found my place in this world.\u00a0 Once I found that I was doing well with it, it just stuck; and off I went for 27 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did Mom and Dad know what Andrew was off doing, dropping gasoline tanks over the side of the bridge?\u00a0 Were they aware that any of this was happening in your life?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think, early on, not so much.\u00a0 No, I wasn\u2019t after getting their attention or any such thing; but they began to pick up on it.\u00a0 They were not fools themselves.\u00a0 They could see the crowd I was running with, and they found drug paraphernalia over time.\u00a0 These things were foreign to them.\u00a0 They might not know what a particular instrument was used for; but they know, \u201cIt\u2019s up to no good,\u201d and they know it smells and something\u2019s gone wrong.\u00a0 I probably crashed five cars.\u00a0 Oh, they were just tearing their hair out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So when would have been the time in your life\u2014was this like when you turned 12 or 13 that you headed on the wrong path?\u00a0 How long was the period where you\u2019re off doing stuff that Mom and Dad are kind of aware, \u201cOur son is headed in the wrong direction\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would say I started drinking and smoking dope when I was probably 13, 14, 15 years old; and I think the idea that that could be happening to them was so foreign that it didn\u2019t come to their awareness for a number of years afterwards. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They were clueless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 They were fairly clueless.\u00a0 Dad\u2019s Argentine and he didn\u2019t have any experience in such things.\u00a0 Mom is a straight-laced Oregonian.\u00a0 They were missionaries on the mission field in Latin America, coming back up to the U.S. when I was about six or seven, and just getting into the swing of the American life.\u00a0 All-American boy stuff is not that positive, necessarily, these days.\u00a0 They were a little oblivious, I am sure, to all that, in those early days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So at 13 you\u2019re drinking and starting to smoke dope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, stealing liquor out of my friends\u2019 parents\u2019 liquor cabinets, stealing beer out of garages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So help us understand the mind of the prodigal because here\u2019s a parent who is listening, and they\u2019re scared to death their son or their daughter is going to go down a similar trail.\u00a0 What you\u2019re really describing is a young man who grew up in a home where the Scriptures were taught, right from wrong were contrasted, you had a dad who\u2014I\u00a0 mean, your dad\u2019s not perfect; but he\u2019s committed to Jesus Christ, and he\u2019s provided a great model of integrity.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s not a dictator.\u00a0 He\u2019s a sweet-spirited man who has proclaimed Christ around the world.\u00a0 I mean, were you feeling guilty, filled with shame, and just not even able to look at your parents in the morning as you got ready to go to junior high and high school?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s just as you say.\u00a0 My parents really were gracious to me, loved me and my brothers.\u00a0 They practiced what they preached inasmuch as is humanly possible.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what else they could possibly do; and I had a great church, a great example there in the youth group and the pastor. I didn\u2019t see a lot of hypocrisy there or any such thing; but just from the youngest of ages, I was just determined to go my own way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t remember there being a lot of thoughtfulness into, \u201cTheir way versus my way.\u201d\u00a0 I would just see them\u2014I knew that I had their support, and their love, and their encouragement; but I just had such a selfish, self-interested\u2014it\u2019s hard to describe it any other way except for that while I would sort of say, \u201cI\u2019m a lover, not a fighter.\u201d\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t an angry guy.\u00a0 I certainly did not care, ultimately, about my parents\u2019 feelings, about the direction they were going.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just thought I knew better.\u00a0 I cared more about what my friends thought of me than I did about them.\u00a0 It breaks my heart to think of how ignorant I was to the pain that I caused my parents.\u00a0 Now I\u2019ve got 13- and 14-year-old boys myself, and my little girl, Sadie\u2014I think about them.\u00a0 \u201cWhat would drive them to behave that way?\u00a0 How could they do it?\u201d\u2014the betrayal that you experience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, the lies and the deceit you had to be expressing toward them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Even when I showed my mom the book, now 18 years later, and we\u2019re working together in ministry all these years\u2014some of the particular details\u2014I could tell it really hurt her.\u00a0 It broke her heart, and it made me sad to think of it.\u00a0 We determined together that this is the story that needs to be told so that people do understand that this does happen and that there is hope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In high school, there were days when you were stoned all day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was just how you were living life.\u00a0 By this time, Mom and Dad had to know, \u201cWe\u2019ve got some trouble here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing how much I did play it off, though.\u00a0 I would just go day by day and show up at the house and play things off quite well.\u00a0 They did know there was trouble.\u00a0 They had found drug paraphernalia.\u00a0 They had tried to send me to a camp down in southern Oregon, and I just staunchly refused.\u00a0 I think they knew, \u201cIf anything good was going to happen in this boy\u2019s life, it\u2019s going to be God\u2019s work.\u00a0 We will be this example.\u00a0 We will live the life as a testimony that when we say God offers life, and life in abundance\u2014when the Scripture tells us about these things, that it\u2019s actually the fact.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey decided to live that life, to pray faithfully for me, and to share with me the Good News because they knew that the Good News was the power of God unto salvation for my life.\u00a0 They knew that nothing they could do to manipulate me or to introduce various reasonable considerations would change me.\u00a0 They knew it just was going to take a miracle of God; but they also always believed that I would become a man of God.\u00a0 So in the midst of the most challenging situation, they always had confidence in the Word of God that God could radically transform, and change, and make a difference, and even give me something to do in the Kingdom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You actually had a grandmother who believed you would proclaim the Gospel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and she mentioned it in a sort of obviously prophetic way when I was born.\u00a0 We were in Cali, Colombia, where I was born.\u00a0 Dad called and said, \u201cHere\u2019s this third little rascal.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWell, I believe this one is going to be an evangelist.\u201d\u00a0 Dad believed it.\u00a0 She wasn\u2019t prone to giving such pronouncements; but she said it, and he grabbed on to it, held on to it, mentioned it to me here and there along the way, just to get my goat, I think.\u00a0 Lo and behold, the joke is on me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were there times, in the midst of this, when you decided, \u201cI have to clean up my act.\u00a0 I have to quit drinking.\u00a0 I have to quit smoking.\u00a0 I can tell that this is the wrong path I\u2019m on, and I\u2019m going to reform myself for a few days or a week.\u201d\u00a0 Did you have that; or was it just like, \u201cI am loving life, and this is how life\u2019s going to be for me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not really\u2014maybe, to let things simmer down.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to get in trouble.\u00a0 I hated confrontation, so I would try to let things simmer down; but I never said, \u201cI\u2019m going to quit smoking.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to quit drinking.\u201d\u00a0 I just found an easier way to do it and stay out of trouble.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there ever an intervention, ever a time when your parents or anybody else sat down and said, \u201cLook, Andrew, we\u2019ve got to get help for you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 There were some attempts, but I just resisted them.\u00a0 I think that my parents pressed it to the point where they realized, \u201cWe have to decide now:\u00a0\u00a0 Are we kicking him out of the house, or are we going to hold him closer and try to bring any introduction of the things of God in the ways we can for the years that we have him?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey chose not to throw me out of the house, not to wring my neck\u2014God bless them!\u00a0 They had every reason and right in the world, but they decided to hold me closer and try to express the love of God in tangible ways and let me know that they loved me and that they had hope for me.\u00a0 That\u2019s the route that they took.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Looking back, is there anything your mom or dad could have done differently, when you were in high school, that might have taken you on a different course?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t think they could have done anything that would have taken me down a different course.\u00a0 That\u2019s a great question.\u00a0 I sometimes can\u2019t believe that they didn\u2019t just crack down on me a little harder; but the fact of the matter is, I don\u2019t think that would have made a difference for me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was so determined.\u00a0 When you\u2014if you read the book, and you look at all the incidents that I went through until the Lord, finally, in His mercy, intervened and revealed Himself to me, you would see, \u201cWhat could a parent do that that kind of frightening situation wouldn\u2019t have done to shape this guy up?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your behavior was insane.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It was ridiculous.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you talk, <em>Secret Life of a Fool<\/em>; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Secret Life of a Fool.<\/em>\u00a0 You were betraying the laws of God\u2014the law of gravity; and when you betray the law of gravity, you\u2019re going to get profoundly hurt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk a little bit later about your personal conversion to Christ and how, even though you grew up in an evangelist\u2019s home, it wasn\u2019t until really 18 years ago\u2014and you\u2019re 45 now.\u00a0 When you were 27\u2014when you, ultimately, came to faith in Christ.\u00a0 But I\u2019m just wondering right now\u2014if we\u2019re talking and a guy who has either clicked on the radio and come across your story, and he\u2019s been riveted by <em>The Secret Life of a Fool<\/em>.\u00a0 He\u2019s going, \u201cThat\u2019s me.\u00a0 I can\u2019t wait until tomorrow to hear the rest of the story.\u201d\u00a0 What would you say to him, right now, and Who would you introduce him to?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Well, I would really encourage anyone who has wandered on to this station\u2014I would say, \u201cIt is not by chance that you are here.\u201d\u00a0 If you feel compelled and you feel like things are occurring in your life that are drawing you to consider things differently\u2014that that is exactly what is happening.\u00a0 The Lord loves you, and He is after you.\u00a0 The Bible says that the Enemy comes to kill and to destroy; but God says to you, \u201cI offer you life and life in abundance.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s real and it\u2019s possible for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re never too far from the Lord.\u00a0 You know, the thing that you need to realize is that God loves you.\u00a0 He says in Jeremiah, \u201cBefore I created you in your mother\u2019s womb, I knew you.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the little illustrations, of which there are many across Scripture, where He tries to help you understand that He loves you deeply, and He understands, and He knows you because He created you.\u00a0 He created you for a purpose, and for each of us it was to be in a relationship with Him.\u00a0 That is the purpose for which you were created.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a problem.\u00a0 The purpose for which we were created for is broken, and you\u2019re not alone.\u00a0 I mentioned it earlier in the program.\u00a0 The Bible says in Isaiah, \u201cAll of us like sheep have gone astray, each one to their own way.\u201d\u00a0 That sounds like bad news, and it is; but the Good News, which we\u2019re always left with, is that it goes on to say, \u201cBut God laid on Jesus the sins of us all.\u201d\u00a0 No matter how far you\u2019ve gone, there is hope.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is exactly why Jesus Christ went to the cross because there is a penalty to be paid.\u00a0 You feel it pressing down on you, and you struggle to sleep at night because of the burden of the shame and guilt of your life.\u00a0 I know.\u00a0 I struggled with that so much, and I used alcohol to cover that up and to hide from that reality; but the relationship you were made for can be made whole again because of the work of Jesus Christ on the cross.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, we\u2019re all created by God; but we don\u2019t become His child until we believe in Him and receive Him.\u00a0 This is what I would call you to do.\u00a0 What is going so well in your life right now?\u00a0 I would challenge you to consider that, \u201cYou would reject an offer like this?\u00a0 The God of the universe calling you, saying, \u2018Come, walk with Me.\u00a0 Be my child.\u00a0 I am faithful and I am able to forgive you, to cleanse you, and to bring you into My family.\u2019\u201d I would urge you to do it.\u00a0 You hear Him knocking at the door of your heart?\u00a0 Open the door and He will do this work in your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And He does come in, and He does make all things new.\u00a0 I was thinking of John, Chapter 5, as you were talking there, Andrew.\u00a0 Jesus said, \u201cTruly, truly I say to you.\u00a0 Whoever hears My Word and believes Him Who sent Me has eternal life.\u00a0 He does not come into judgment but is passed from death to life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll that shame and guilt that you\u2019ve expressed in this broadcast\u2014Jesus Christ came to bear and to release us from.\u00a0 I just say to that person, who is listening, if you\u2019ve never done this\u2014pull off to the side of the road, stop what you\u2019re doing\u2014maybe it\u2019s after work.\u00a0 If you need to still maintain what you\u2019re doing at work, but just get down on your knees and say, \u201cLord, be merciful to me, a sinner, and come in because I hear You knocking.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The remodeling starts when we say, \u201cLord, I hear You. 4 says, \u201cI have no greater joy than this that my children are walking in the truth.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve said to a lot of parents, \u201cIf that\u2019s true, then I think the converse may be true as well.\u00a0 \u2018I have no greater pain than this\u2014if my children aren\u2019t doing well spiritually.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 There\u2019s almost nothing harder for a mom or a dad than to see a now?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Over 50 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Fifty years of faithfully proclaiming the Gospel.\u00a0 Now, you\u2019re on the team with your dad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can you believe it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But it wasn\u2019t always so; was it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Joke\u2019s on me.\u00a0 I\u2019m like a poster child for how this thing works out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have written a book, and it\u2019s interesting.\u00a0 It\u2019s called <em>The Secret Life of a Fool.<\/em>\u00a0 You begin the book with a story of a plane crash.\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m just curious.\u00a0 Why do you begin with that illustration and that story? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s interesting.\u00a0 I had been thinking about putting a tool together, which would be my testimony\u2014the Gospel around my testimony\u2014for many years\u2014for 18 years now since I came to know Christ.\u00a0 I was waiting and waiting for the Lord\u2019s timing.\u00a0 I felt like I needed to get some maturity under my belt and this sort of thing.\u00a0 I had organized to have someone come and help me to put some of these thoughts together.\u00a0 We were meeting in Jamaica; my wife is Jamaican.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn the week before he came out to see us, we were on a plane that crashed on the beach in Kingston, Jamaica.\u00a0 It just seemed like it was just of the Lord, that in that time, where I recognized some things that I talked about\u2014that Scripture tells us about\u2014that our life is like a vapor, and God doesn\u2019t promise us tomorrow.\u00a0 Those truths just hit so deeply in this new way for me.\u00a0 It just seemed like a perfect introduction\u2014as if the Lord doesn\u2019t waste anything.\u00a0 So He\u2014maybe it was a bit too boring\u2014so He gave me a nice intro.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re talking pretty calmly about this plane crash.\u00a0 Were you in a plane, going down, thinking, \u201cThis is it\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, as a matter of fact.\u00a0 We were in a plane, and it was going down; but we were unaware of it.\u00a0 It was me, my wife, my three children.\u00a0 It was a 737\/800\u2014you know\u2014the stretch 737s that they put extra passengers on.\u00a0 We were in a squall of a rainstorm.\u00a0 The pilot made a mistake\u2014overshot the runway.\u00a0 In an instant, we crashed\u2014no warning.\u00a0 The results were terrible.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFortunately, it was one of the few plane crashes of its category in which no one died; but it was very clear to us that God had intervened and protected us, and He was going to use this.\u00a0 I think the book is one of the ways in which He might bring glory to Himself and help us to recognize that life is serious and we have some work to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The book really is the story of a lot of bad decisions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, endless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, starting in your teenage years\u2014and the thing I had to ask you\u2014you were a pyromaniac!\u00a0 You had a lot of experience with gasoline.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I think boys obviously seem to be inclined toward these kinds of things.\u00a0 Now, people put Mentos<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> in a Pepsi<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> bottle and watch it explode; but we just took it to the wrong level in all kinds of stuff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Tell our listeners about dropping the one-gallon containers of gasoline off the overpass.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we had the best intentions, of course.\u00a0 We would fill up the old apple cider jugs\u2014you remember, with the little handle there?\u00a0 We\u2019d fill it with gas, and put a piece of paper in the top, and do a little Molotov cocktail off of this bridge, onto this road.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019d wait until cars were maybe a mile or so back; and as they\u2019d come around the corner, we\u2019d drop it.\u00a0 It would make a big fireball.\u00a0 We\u2019d see the cars sort of lock up their brakes and fishtail.\u00a0 We\u2019d chuckle and run off in the woods.\u00a0 It was ridiculous.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI struggled in putting the stories together for the book because it\u2019s sort of shameful.\u00a0 Even looking you guys in the eyes, I\u2019m going, \u201cOh, brother.\u00a0 Do we really have to go there?\u201d; but people do ridiculous things.\u00a0 They get involved with stuff, and a lot of people can relate.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, this is Andrew Palau, the son of international evangelist, Luis Palau, who is running off doing these acts of vandalism near your hometown.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 And there are many others I couldn\u2019t put in the book.\u00a0 My dad was worried like, \u201cDo you think the police could come after you for some of this stuff?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t think so.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Andrew, what were you doing?\u00a0 You grew up in a home where you heard the Gospel.\u00a0 You saw the love of Christ.\u00a0 It was pretty clear.\u00a0 Your family was walking with the Lord, and you were kind of off here doing your own thing.\u00a0 What was going on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think it was fairly typical rebellion, you know.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t really that stereotypical, \u201cI hate God, and I hate religion.\u00a0 You can\u2019t shove it down my throat\u201d; but it was just this love of self\u2014this selfish, self-centered attitude.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, you talk about it in your book.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t have a father wound.\u00a0 You said your dad was really a good father, and your mom and dad committed to each other, and raised you to fear God, to obey Him.\u00a0 This really became\u2014being a fool\u2014really became a point of identity for you; didn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is how you gained acceptance into the crowd and to who you ran around with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\u00a0 I think finding a little place where you can do the most ridiculous thing at night and laugh about it the next day.\u00a0 That\u2019s kind of how I just sort of put notches in my belt and found my place in this world.\u00a0 Once I found that I was doing well with it, it just stuck; and off I went for 27 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did Mom and Dad know what Andrew was off doing, dropping gasoline tanks over the side of the bridge?\u00a0 Were they aware that any of this was happening in your life?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think, early on, not so much.\u00a0 No, I wasn\u2019t after getting their attention or any such thing; but they began to pick up on it.\u00a0 They were not fools themselves.\u00a0 They could see the crowd I was running with, and they found drug paraphernalia over time.\u00a0 These things were foreign to them.\u00a0 They might not know what a particular instrument was used for; but they know, \u201cIt\u2019s up to no good,\u201d and they know it smells and something\u2019s gone wrong.\u00a0 I probably crashed five cars.\u00a0 Oh, they were just tearing their hair out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So when would have been the time in your life\u2014was this like when you turned 12 or 13 that you headed on the wrong path?\u00a0 How long was the period where you\u2019re off doing stuff that Mom and Dad are kind of aware, \u201cOur son is headed in the wrong direction\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would say I started drinking and smoking dope when I was probably 13, 14, 15 years old; and I think the idea that that could be happening to them was so foreign that it didn\u2019t come to their awareness for a number of years afterwards. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They were clueless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 They were fairly clueless.\u00a0 Dad\u2019s Argentine and he didn\u2019t have any experience in such things.\u00a0 Mom is a straight-laced Oregonian.\u00a0 They were missionaries on the mission field in Latin America, coming back up to the U.S. when I was about six or seven, and just getting into the swing of the American life.\u00a0 All-American boy stuff is not that positive, necessarily, these days.\u00a0 They were a little oblivious, I am sure, to all that, in those early days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So at 13 you\u2019re drinking and starting to smoke dope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, stealing liquor out of my friends\u2019 parents\u2019 liquor cabinets, stealing beer out of garages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So help us understand the mind of the prodigal because here\u2019s a parent who is listening, and they\u2019re scared to death their son or their daughter is going to go down a similar trail.\u00a0 What you\u2019re really describing is a young man who grew up in a home where the Scriptures were taught, right from wrong were contrasted, you had a dad who\u2014I\u00a0 mean, your dad\u2019s not perfect; but he\u2019s committed to Jesus Christ, and he\u2019s provided a great model of integrity.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s not a dictator.\u00a0 He\u2019s a sweet-spirited man who has proclaimed Christ around the world.\u00a0 I mean, were you feeling guilty, filled with shame, and just not even able to look at your parents in the morning as you got ready to go to junior high and high school?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s just as you say.\u00a0 My parents really were gracious to me, loved me and my brothers.\u00a0 They practiced what they preached inasmuch as is humanly possible.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what else they could possibly do; and I had a great church, a great example there in the youth group and the pastor. I didn\u2019t see a lot of hypocrisy there or any such thing; but just from the youngest of ages, I was just determined to go my own way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t remember there being a lot of thoughtfulness into, \u201cTheir way versus my way.\u201d\u00a0 I would just see them\u2014I knew that I had their support, and their love, and their encouragement; but I just had such a selfish, self-interested\u2014it\u2019s hard to describe it any other way except for that while I would sort of say, \u201cI\u2019m a lover, not a fighter.\u201d\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t an angry guy.\u00a0 I certainly did not care, ultimately, about my parents\u2019 feelings, about the direction they were going.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just thought I knew better.\u00a0 I cared more about what my friends thought of me than I did about them.\u00a0 It breaks my heart to think of how ignorant I was to the pain that I caused my parents.\u00a0 Now I\u2019ve got 13- and 14-year-old boys myself, and my little girl, Sadie\u2014I think about them.\u00a0 \u201cWhat would drive them to behave that way?\u00a0 How could they do it?\u201d\u2014the betrayal that you experience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, the lies and the deceit you had to be expressing toward them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Even when I showed my mom the book, now 18 years later, and we\u2019re working together in ministry all these years\u2014some of the particular details\u2014I could tell it really hurt her.\u00a0 It broke her heart, and it made me sad to think of it.\u00a0 We determined together that this is the story that needs to be told so that people do understand that this does happen and that there is hope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In high school, there were days when you were stoned all day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was just how you were living life.\u00a0 By this time, Mom and Dad had to know, \u201cWe\u2019ve got some trouble here.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing how much I did play it off, though.\u00a0 I would just go day by day and show up at the house and play things off quite well.\u00a0 They did know there was trouble.\u00a0 They had found drug paraphernalia.\u00a0 They had tried to send me to a camp down in southern Oregon, and I just staunchly refused.\u00a0 I think they knew, \u201cIf anything good was going to happen in this boy\u2019s life, it\u2019s going to be God\u2019s work.\u00a0 We will be this example.\u00a0 We will live the life as a testimony that when we say God offers life, and life in abundance\u2014when the Scripture tells us about these things, that it\u2019s actually the fact.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey decided to live that life, to pray faithfully for me, and to share with me the Good News because they knew that the Good News was the power of God unto salvation for my life.\u00a0 They knew that nothing they could do to manipulate me or to introduce various reasonable considerations would change me.\u00a0 They knew it just was going to take a miracle of God; but they also always believed that I would become a man of God.\u00a0 So in the midst of the most challenging situation, they always had confidence in the Word of God that God could radically transform, and change, and make a difference, and even give me something to do in the Kingdom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You actually had a grandmother who believed you would proclaim the Gospel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and she mentioned it in a sort of obviously prophetic way when I was born.\u00a0 We were in Cali, Colombia, where I was born.\u00a0 Dad called and said, \u201cHere\u2019s this third little rascal.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWell, I believe this one is going to be an evangelist.\u201d\u00a0 Dad believed it.\u00a0 She wasn\u2019t prone to giving such pronouncements; but she said it, and he grabbed on to it, held on to it, mentioned it to me here and there along the way, just to get my goat, I think.\u00a0 Lo and behold, the joke is on me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were there times, in the midst of this, when you decided, \u201cI have to clean up my act.\u00a0 I have to quit drinking.\u00a0 I have to quit smoking.\u00a0 I can tell that this is the wrong path I\u2019m on, and I\u2019m going to reform myself for a few days or a week.\u201d\u00a0 Did you have that; or was it just like, \u201cI am loving life, and this is how life\u2019s going to be for me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not really\u2014maybe, to let things simmer down.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to get in trouble.\u00a0 I hated confrontation, so I would try to let things simmer down; but I never said, \u201cI\u2019m going to quit smoking.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to quit drinking.\u201d\u00a0 I just found an easier way to do it and stay out of trouble.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there ever an intervention, ever a time when your parents or anybody else sat down and said, \u201cLook, Andrew, we\u2019ve got to get help for you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 There were some attempts, but I just resisted them.\u00a0 I think that my parents pressed it to the point where they realized, \u201cWe have to decide now:\u00a0\u00a0 Are we kicking him out of the house, or are we going to hold him closer and try to bring any introduction of the things of God in the ways we can for the years that we have him?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey chose not to throw me out of the house, not to wring my neck\u2014God bless them!\u00a0 They had every reason and right in the world, but they decided to hold me closer and try to express the love of God in tangible ways and let me know that they loved me and that they had hope for me.\u00a0 That\u2019s the route that they took.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Looking back, is there anything your mom or dad could have done differently, when you were in high school, that might have taken you on a different course?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t think they could have done anything that would have taken me down a different course.\u00a0 That\u2019s a great question.\u00a0 I sometimes can\u2019t believe that they didn\u2019t just crack down on me a little harder; but the fact of the matter is, I don\u2019t think that would have made a difference for me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was so determined.\u00a0 When you\u2014if you read the book, and you look at all the incidents that I went through until the Lord, finally, in His mercy, intervened and revealed Himself to me, you would see, \u201cWhat could a parent do that that kind of frightening situation wouldn\u2019t have done to shape this guy up?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your behavior was insane.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It was ridiculous.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you talk, <em>Secret Life of a Fool<\/em>; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Secret Life of a Fool.<\/em>\u00a0 You were betraying the laws of God\u2014the law of gravity; and when you betray the law of gravity, you\u2019re going to get profoundly hurt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk a little bit later about your personal conversion to Christ and how, even though you grew up in an evangelist\u2019s home, it wasn\u2019t until really 18 years ago\u2014and you\u2019re 45 now.\u00a0 When you were 27\u2014when you, ultimately, came to faith in Christ.\u00a0 But I\u2019m just wondering right now\u2014if we\u2019re talking and a guy who has either clicked on the radio and come across your story, and he\u2019s been riveted by <em>The Secret Life of a Fool<\/em>.\u00a0 He\u2019s going, \u201cThat\u2019s me.\u00a0 I can\u2019t wait until tomorrow to hear the rest of the story.\u201d\u00a0 What would you say to him, right now, and Who would you introduce him to?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andrew:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Well, I would really encourage anyone who has wandered on to this station\u2014I would say, \u201cIt is not by chance that you are here.\u201d\u00a0 If you feel compelled and you feel like things are occurring in your life that are drawing you to consider things differently\u2014that that is exactly what is happening.\u00a0 The Lord loves you, and He is after you.\u00a0 The Bible says that the Enemy comes to kill and to destroy; but God says to you, \u201cI offer you life and life in abundance.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s real and it\u2019s possible for you. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re never too far from the Lord.\u00a0 You know, the thing that you need to realize is that God loves you.\u00a0 He says in Jeremiah, \u201cBefore I created you in your mother\u2019s womb, I knew you.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the little illustrations, of which there are many across Scripture, where He tries to help you understand that He loves you deeply, and He understands, and He knows you because He created you.\u00a0 He created you for a purpose, and for each of us it was to be in a relationship with Him.\u00a0 That is the purpose for which you were created.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have a problem.\u00a0 The purpose for which we were created for is broken, and you\u2019re not alone.\u00a0 I mentioned it earlier in the program.\u00a0 The Bible says in Isaiah, \u201cAll of us like sheep have gone astray, each one to their own way.\u201d\u00a0 That sounds like bad news, and it is; but the Good News, which we\u2019re always left with, is that it goes on to say, \u201cBut God laid on Jesus the sins of us all.\u201d\u00a0 No matter how far you\u2019ve gone, there is hope.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is exactly why Jesus Christ went to the cross because there is a penalty to be paid.\u00a0 You feel it pressing down on you, and you struggle to sleep at night because of the burden of the shame and guilt of your life.\u00a0 I know.\u00a0 I struggled with that so much, and I used alcohol to cover that up and to hide from that reality; but the relationship you were made for can be made whole again because of the work of Jesus Christ on the cross.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, we\u2019re all created by God; but we don\u2019t become His child until we believe in Him and receive Him.\u00a0 This is what I would call you to do.\u00a0 What is going so well in your life right now?\u00a0 I would challenge you to consider that, \u201cYou would reject an offer like this?\u00a0 The God of the universe calling you, saying, \u2018Come, walk with Me.\u00a0 Be my child.\u00a0 I am faithful and I am able to forgive you, to cleanse you, and to bring you into My family.\u2019\u201d I would urge you to do it.\u00a0 You hear Him knocking at the door of your heart?\u00a0 Open the door and He will do this work in your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And He does come in, and He does make all things new.\u00a0 I was thinking of John, Chapter 5, as you were talking there, Andrew.\u00a0 Jesus said, \u201cTruly, truly I say to you.\u00a0 Whoever hears My Word and believes Him Who sent Me has eternal life.\u00a0 He does not come into judgment but is passed from death to life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll that shame and guilt that you\u2019ve expressed in this broadcast\u2014Jesus Christ came to bear and to release us from.\u00a0 I just say to that person, who is listening, if you\u2019ve never done this\u2014pull off to the side of the road, stop what you\u2019re doing\u2014maybe it\u2019s after work.\u00a0 If you need to still maintain what you\u2019re doing at work, but just get down on your knees and say, \u201cLord, be merciful to me, a sinner, and come in because I hear You knocking.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The remodeling starts when we say, \u201cLord, I hear You.
