but as I mentioned earlier, you got me.\u00a0 Who is in the target?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me just say, because some folks may not be familiar with the movie, it opens next weekend in theaters all across the country\u2014about 300 or 400 theaters; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s a coming-of-age story about a 19-year-old girl who learns, suddenly, that she was adopted, and decides she wants to meet her birthmother, and goes off in search of her birthmother on kind of a road trip, with three or four of her friends.\u00a0 She winds up, actually, getting to the mystery of her own birth; and it\u2019s a compelling story.\u00a0 She comes back, has to be reconciled with her father.\u00a0 They\u2019d had a strained relationship in the midst of all of this.\u00a0 There are a lot of themes that show up in this film.\u00a0 Who did you have in mind as the audience for the film when you were making it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are films that are for kids that adults don\u2019t like, or for adults that kids don\u2019t like, or these teen films that nobody likes, that type thing.\u00a0 The idea was, \u201cCould you make a film that could bring the family together\u2014and that a 14-year-old girl could watch with her mom\u2014and they\u2019re both enjoying it for different reasons?\u00a0 That\u2019s what we tried to do with <em>October Baby<\/em> because the goal of <em>October Baby <\/em>is to create dialogue and conversation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would just like to say, and then Andy can answer this, as well.\u00a0 The person that I made it for was the young girl who is going to see the film and realize how beautiful life is, and how precious it is, and how sacred it is.\u00a0 If she was ever faced with the choice that the movie deals with, which is whether or not to have an abortion, she would choose life.\u00a0 That the film, being in theaters, would lead to lives that were saved.\u00a0 That\u2019s why I made the film.\u00a0 But I\u2019ll tell you this\u2014there are some audiences that surprised us.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if you want to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It is very much the Pixar model.\u00a0 You know, a Pixar movie, when you watch that, the humor is sophisticated for an adult.\u00a0 Also, there are a lot of nice moral themes that the parents love for their kids.\u00a0 For a kid, it\u2019s very entertaining and engaging.\u00a0 With this movie, we wanted it to be engaging for a younger person\u2014that it was hip, and trendy, and entertaining\u2014but for an adult, it has the moral themes that they want to engage with, and also did not offend, or alienate, or make fun of the adults.\u00a0 We wanted both audiences.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe thing that we were shocked about is we thought that we could capture the 18- to 25-year-old girl with this story, but the kids that like it are a lot younger than we thought\u201413-, 14-, 15-year-old girls are rabidly passionate about this film.\u00a0 A lot have already seen it in some of the limited screenings\u2014have said things like this, \u201cIt\u2019s their favorite film.\u201d\u00a0 We were shocked by that because for them to think that\u2014I mean, the most honest audience you will have as far as criticism is teenagers because if they don\u2019t like it, you know it.\u00a0 It\u2019s been really interesting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you the other surprise that we had is\u2014the film deals with forgiveness.\u00a0 That\u2019s the big theme of the movie\u2014forgiveness and restoration, healing, moving on, finding who you are\u2014those type things.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had hundreds of responses, even in the limited screenings that we\u2019ve done, of women who have had an abortion that are saying, \u201cThis is one of the more healing experiences they\u2019ve ever had in their life, and that they would recommend it to anyone.\u201d\u00a0 I did not realize this\u2014the statistic is\u2014one-third of child-bearing women have had abortions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, there are tens of millions of women\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 That need healing, that are carrying this weight.\u00a0 They don\u2019t feel like they can tell anybody.\u00a0 Somehow, the film is a step in their journey; and I\u2019m very proud of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is also the issue of restoration of a relationship, a strained relationship with a father.\u00a0 Rachel, you indicated that you\u2019d had some struggles growing up as a young lady.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think for a father and a daughter\u2014you go through things in your youth.\u00a0 My parents divorced when I was 14, and I had to really learn how to reconcile that.\u00a0 It\u2019s a thing that\u2019s not easy for any child.\u00a0 I don\u2019t put any blame on my parents, but we had to work through some stuff.\u00a0 I think that I really connected to the role of Hannah, in that facet, because of how challenging it is to communicate with your parents when you\u2019re 19 years old\u2014and to be okay with being honest with them and telling them how you feel, when it\u2019s embarrassing.\u00a0 I think, in that journey, you come to a point where you\u2019re an adult, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you have to forgive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; and vice-versa.\u00a0 You have to also feel like there\u2019s restoration for you to be forgiven from them for things you do, or things you go through.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I believe that families should celebrate honesty and talk to each other.\u00a0 I think, that in the film, it really celebrates that journey and shows a realistic perspective of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rachel, you wound up in this film\u2014this is your first role in a major motion picture.\u00a0 Here you are, acting opposite John Schneider, who has done a few films, a few TV shows.\u00a0 He has a little bit of a track record.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, sure does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are some other folks in this film who have been around the track, as well.\u00a0 Jasmine Guy is in the film.\u00a0 Was that intimidating for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not at all, actually.\u00a0 I think the first scene I did with John Schneider was a really tense time in the film.\u00a0 It\u2019s just back and forth, blame game, trying to understand.\u00a0 That was our first scene together.\u00a0 It happened really naturally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You naturally argued with each other, huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 When I watched the movie, I love that scene.\u00a0 He was frustrated with me; and I\u2019m like, \u201cI have had that fight with my dad.\u201d\u00a0 Working with Jasmine Guy, she just\u2014man!\u2014I couldn\u2019t look at her in the face and listen to her words without reacting the way that I had.\u00a0 She is, obviously, very seasoned and had a lot of experience; and I attribute a lot of my performance to the other actors bringing it, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would like to say, on behalf of the Erwin brothers, we cast Rachel for the first time, working with her on a Michael W. Smith music video a long time ago, and just saw the spark, and kind of worked with her over the years.\u00a0 We wrote <em>October Baby<\/em> for her.\u00a0 A lot of people asked, \u201cDon\u2019t you want to audition people who are well-known?\u201d or whatever; but we felt like Rachel could just own this role, and she could blossom.\u00a0 It was beyond anything she\u2019d ever done, and so we just felt like\u2014I felt like one of those reality shows\u2014the singing reality shows\u2014you know, <em>Idol\u00ae<\/em>, and <em>X-Factor\u00ae<\/em>, and those type things, where a singer just sings a song that you don\u2019t quite know.\u00a0 They just crush it and just send it right over the fence.\u00a0 In all these scenes, we were so proud of Rachel.\u00a0 It\u2019s just such an outstanding performance.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlso, I\u2019m more the technical brother.\u00a0 I\u2019m the cinematographer and whatnot.\u00a0 Andy works with the actors.\u00a0 I think, if you look, there\u2019s not just one great performance by one actor in <em>October Baby<\/em>.\u00a0 I believe there\u2019s a great performance by a great cast, and I think Andy deserves a lot of credit for that.\u00a0 He worked with the actors; and he gets, really, what they need.\u00a0 I hope that <em>October Baby<\/em> really raises the bar in terms of level of performance.\u00a0 It\u2019s time that we offer God our very best.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Speaking of music reality shows, Andy, one of your actors in here is recognizable to anybody who has watched <em>American Idol<\/em> for the last few seasons.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy:<\/strong>\u00a0 By the way, John Schneider and Jasmine Guy took a big risk accepting these roles, and they just gave vulnerable performances that I\u2019ve never seen from either of them before.\u00a0 I was really proud of them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe felt like, with the drama side, we felt like, in order to engage such a deep emotional issue, you needed to laugh as hard as you cried.\u00a0 We felt like there had to be these moments where you were able to kind of catch your breath and be able to take a moment to take it all in.\u00a0 Otherwise, it would become too overwhelming to deal with a subject this intense.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo Chris Sligh\u2014you know Jon\u2019s and my background with music videos.\u00a0 We were at the Dove awards one year, and I ran into this big guy backstage that I had seen on American Idol.\u00a0 When I heard him say, on the air, that his main goal in being on <em>American Idol<\/em> was to make David Hasselhoff cry, I laughed out loud.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI don\u2019t care if that guy can sing.\u00a0 He needs to be in the movies.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI bumped into him backstage at the Dove awards; and I said, \u201cChris Sligh, you don\u2019t know me.\u00a0 I have a movie part for you.\u00a0 It\u2019s written for you.\u201d\u00a0 We wrote the role of B-Mac, who is this misfit, hippy nut that takes the kids on this trip in his VW minibus named Evelyn to New Orleans.\u00a0 He\u2019s their chaperone of sorts, and his goofy cousin, Austin, who\u2019s an improv comedian.\u00a0 The two of them have such a great chemistry that, literally, my main job, as a director, during those times, is\u2014Jon and I were, literally, behind the monitor, holding our mouths shut, trying not to laugh out loud and ruin the takes because the amount of outtakes we got from that is a whole another series.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 We all were.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You did a great job on that.\u00a0 One of the things that FamilyLife has championed over the years has been the plight of the orphan.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s why this movie got me so much.\u00a0 Part of the reason is it\u2019s a part of our fiber of who we are, here at FamilyLife.\u00a0 We have a ministry called Hope for Orphans\u00ae.\u00a0 As we\u2019ve talked about the needs of orphans worldwide, one of the statements that I have made at the Summit , that we\u2019re going to have in the comings months at Saddleback, is this statement.\u00a0 I say, \u201cI believe God has not overturned Roe v. Wade because the Christian community has been pro-life, but it hasn\u2019t been pro-orphan.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 That\u2019s a great statement.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This movie does a great job.\u00a0 I think you guys are just going to immediately know exactly what my point is of saying, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 We have to be pro-life; but if we\u2019re going to be pro-life, we\u2019ve got to be ready to take on the needs of the orphans, and welcome them into our homes, and wrap them in our arms, in all their brokenness, and invite them into our families.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Well there\u2019s a line for you and every other adoptive parent in the movie.\u00a0 It\u2019s meant to kind of sum up the movie, where Hannah says, \u201cThank you for wanting me.\u201d\u00a0 It is a bit of something God did in my heart.\u00a0 I say, \u201cI\u2019m pro-life, but what does that mean?\u00a0 Faith without works is dead; and true religion and undefiled is to take care of orphans and widows.\u00a0 So what am I doing?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was one of the big inspirations as to why we made this movie.\u00a0 We are trying to really walk that out.\u00a0 One of the things we\u2019re doing is\u201410 percent of the movie\u2019s profits are going into a fund we\u2019re calling \u201cEvery Life is Beautiful\u201d.\u00a0 I just want to praise all of the backing partners of the film\u2014Provident Films\u00ae, and American Family Studios\u00ae, and others that are a part of this.\u00a0 Everybody agreed to it.\u00a0 Ten percent of the profits of the movie are going into a fund we\u2019re calling \u201cEvery Life is Beautiful\u201d.\u00a0 That fund is going to be distributed to pregnancy resource centers that are on the frontlines, helping young girls deal with this decision, adoption agencies, and those that care for orphans.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wonderful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 My goal is that we can help, and that we can play a part, not only by the message of the movie, but also by the money that the movie generates.\u00a0 It\u2019s very important to me that that happens.\u00a0 Celebrating adoption was as important to us, in this movie, as taking on the issue of sanctity of life.\u00a0 Those two issues were very important to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Those two issues should be married together because, I think, that we try to separate those too much.\u00a0 A lot of the adoption agencies that we\u2019ve interacted with\u2014Jedd Medefind over at Christian Alliance for Orphans, and Mark Hall of <em>Casting Crowns<\/em>, who is a dear friend.\u00a0 He just brought home Hope, a couple of years ago, as their adoptive daughter.\u00a0 We\u2019ve seen that the response that they\u2019ve had is it shows adoption is such a beautiful alternative to abortion\u2014marrying the two concepts together of celebrating the beauty of life rather than it just being a political issue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sometimes, it\u2019s very easy to be against something.\u00a0 It\u2019s very difficult to roll up your sleeves, and be <em>for<\/em> something, and for that to translate into your behavior.\u00a0 That\u2019s what we hope the movie will lead to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t agree with you more.\u00a0 I think the Christian community, many times, is known by what we\u2019re pointing our fingers at and condemning.\u00a0 You don\u2019t get that feeling at all from this movie.\u00a0 It\u2019s just extremely well done, and is one that I think every family needs to celebrate life and take their kids to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How important is an opening weekend for a movie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 What a phenomenal question.\u00a0 You know, I had no idea\u2014\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s a soft ball that I tossed to you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you for that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s the one that I wrote down for you right there.\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had no idea\u2014number one, how expensive it was to release a movie in theaters.\u00a0 All the movie studios were afraid of <em>October Baby\u2014<\/em>said it was too polarizing.\u00a0 Some, very passionate believers, came to the table to fund this thing\u2014getting in theaters, at a tremendous financial risk\u2014that I\u2019m forever in their debt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBasically, a movie will impact the culture.\u00a0 This has been our movie.\u00a0 We\u2019re giving it, now, to the audience.\u00a0 If it performs financially, it will stay in theaters and keep touching lives.\u00a0 If it really performs, Hollywood will take notice that this is an issue we feel passionate about and we want to support by going out to the theaters.\u00a0 I am asking everybody, that\u2019s listening to your program, please go see <em>October Baby<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you want to know where it\u2019s playing\u2014it\u2019s playing all over the country:\u00a0 OctoberBabyMovie.net.\u00a0 If for some reason it\u2019s not playing in your area, you can form an action squad and bring it to your area.\u00a0 We need people to support it this weekend.\u00a0 Take a group; get your church involved.\u00a0 I hope that, by going and seeing an entertaining movie, we can get together and celebrate life, as one voice together, at the movie theater.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We should mention that this film actually has some inspiration in a true-life story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it does.\u00a0 In fact, the person who brought <em>October Baby<\/em> to my attention, initially, Paul Pennington, who heads up Hope for Orphans\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hope for Orphans, yes.\u00a0 Paul\u2019s a good friend.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Paul wrote me an email, I think before the movie was out.\u00a0 He had heard about it and recommended that I take a look at it.\u00a0 He sent me a link to a speech that was given in front of the Australian parliament; and it was done by Gianna Jessen, who was a survivor of a saline solution abortion.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to tell you, I\u2019m not into listening to 12- to 15- minute video messages on the internet, but I sat there spellbound.\u00a0 I forwarded the link of the message to all my adult children and got all kinds of feedback from my kids, who listened to it, as well.\u00a0 It\u2019s a spellbinding message; and I, frankly, hope we can someday bring it to our listeners, here at FamilyLife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ve put a link to the video on our website, FamilyLifeToday.com.\u00a0 If folks want to view what you viewed, they can go there and see it. Gianna\u2019s story really was the kernel that led to <em>October Baby<\/em>; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Gianna is just an amazing, amazing person that has really impacted us.\u00a0 I think Jon should talk to that because the story was one that captivated his heart first.\u00a0 Her story, specifically, is something that really challenged him.\u00a0 Jon?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think if you think about somebody like Gianna, she\u2019s one of the most beautiful people I\u2019ve ever met.\u00a0 She has cerebral palsy as a result of a saline abortion, but she\u2019s just\u2014her spirit is amazing.\u00a0 Imagine the beauty that the world would have lost if she didn\u2019t have the right to exist.\u00a0 Imagine how many times we have denied beauty from entering the world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was her story that I heard at a pro-life event that I was mesmerized by.\u00a0 Then, I began to study the issue for myself, and was devastated by it, and felt like I had to do something about it.\u00a0 So, Gianna has become a great friend.\u00a0 She actually sings in the movie.\u00a0 There\u2019s a song when Hannah is walking to a cathedral; back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you for having us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I want you to tell me who you hope comes to this movie.\u00a0 I mean, this movie, obviously, is geared to a younger audience; but as I mentioned earlier, you got me.\u00a0 Who is in the target?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me just say, because some folks may not be familiar with the movie, it opens next weekend in theaters all across the country\u2014about 300 or 400 theaters; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s a coming-of-age story about a 19-year-old girl who learns, suddenly, that she was adopted, and decides she wants to meet her birthmother, and goes off in search of her birthmother on kind of a road trip, with three or four of her friends.\u00a0 She winds up, actually, getting to the mystery of her own birth; and it\u2019s a compelling story.\u00a0 She comes back, has to be reconciled with her father.\u00a0 They\u2019d had a strained relationship in the midst of all of this.\u00a0 There are a lot of themes that show up in this film.\u00a0 Who did you have in mind as the audience for the film when you were making it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are films that are for kids that adults don\u2019t like, or for adults that kids don\u2019t like, or these teen films that nobody likes, that type thing.\u00a0 The idea was, \u201cCould you make a film that could bring the family together\u2014and that a 14-year-old girl could watch with her mom\u2014and they\u2019re both enjoying it for different reasons?\u00a0 That\u2019s what we tried to do with <em>October Baby<\/em> because the goal of <em>October Baby <\/em>is to create dialogue and conversation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would just like to say, and then Andy can answer this, as well.\u00a0 The person that I made it for was the young girl who is going to see the film and realize how beautiful life is, and how precious it is, and how sacred it is.\u00a0 If she was ever faced with the choice that the movie deals with, which is whether or not to have an abortion, she would choose life.\u00a0 That the film, being in theaters, would lead to lives that were saved.\u00a0 That\u2019s why I made the film.\u00a0 But I\u2019ll tell you this\u2014there are some audiences that surprised us.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if you want to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It is very much the Pixar model.\u00a0 You know, a Pixar movie, when you watch that, the humor is sophisticated for an adult.\u00a0 Also, there are a lot of nice moral themes that the parents love for their kids.\u00a0 For a kid, it\u2019s very entertaining and engaging.\u00a0 With this movie, we wanted it to be engaging for a younger person\u2014that it was hip, and trendy, and entertaining\u2014but for an adult, it has the moral themes that they want to engage with, and also did not offend, or alienate, or make fun of the adults.\u00a0 We wanted both audiences.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe thing that we were shocked about is we thought that we could capture the 18- to 25-year-old girl with this story, but the kids that like it are a lot younger than we thought\u201413-, 14-, 15-year-old girls are rabidly passionate about this film.\u00a0 A lot have already seen it in some of the limited screenings\u2014have said things like this, \u201cIt\u2019s their favorite film.\u201d\u00a0 We were shocked by that because for them to think that\u2014I mean, the most honest audience you will have as far as criticism is teenagers because if they don\u2019t like it, you know it.\u00a0 It\u2019s been really interesting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you the other surprise that we had is\u2014the film deals with forgiveness.\u00a0 That\u2019s the big theme of the movie\u2014forgiveness and restoration, healing, moving on, finding who you are\u2014those type things.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had hundreds of responses, even in the limited screenings that we\u2019ve done, of women who have had an abortion that are saying, \u201cThis is one of the more healing experiences they\u2019ve ever had in their life, and that they would recommend it to anyone.\u201d\u00a0 I did not realize this\u2014the statistic is\u2014one-third of child-bearing women have had abortions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, there are tens of millions of women\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 That need healing, that are carrying this weight.\u00a0 They don\u2019t feel like they can tell anybody.\u00a0 Somehow, the film is a step in their journey; and I\u2019m very proud of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is also the issue of restoration of a relationship, a strained relationship with a father.\u00a0 Rachel, you indicated that you\u2019d had some struggles growing up as a young lady.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think for a father and a daughter\u2014you go through things in your youth.\u00a0 My parents divorced when I was 14, and I had to really learn how to reconcile that.\u00a0 It\u2019s a thing that\u2019s not easy for any child.\u00a0 I don\u2019t put any blame on my parents, but we had to work through some stuff.\u00a0 I think that I really connected to the role of Hannah, in that facet, because of how challenging it is to communicate with your parents when you\u2019re 19 years old\u2014and to be okay with being honest with them and telling them how you feel, when it\u2019s embarrassing.\u00a0 I think, in that journey, you come to a point where you\u2019re an adult, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you have to forgive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; and vice-versa.\u00a0 You have to also feel like there\u2019s restoration for you to be forgiven from them for things you do, or things you go through.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I believe that families should celebrate honesty and talk to each other.\u00a0 I think, that in the film, it really celebrates that journey and shows a realistic perspective of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rachel, you wound up in this film\u2014this is your first role in a major motion picture.\u00a0 Here you are, acting opposite John Schneider, who has done a few films, a few TV shows.\u00a0 He has a little bit of a track record.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, sure does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are some other folks in this film who have been around the track, as well.\u00a0 Jasmine Guy is in the film.\u00a0 Was that intimidating for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not at all, actually.\u00a0 I think the first scene I did with John Schneider was a really tense time in the film.\u00a0 It\u2019s just back and forth, blame game, trying to understand.\u00a0 That was our first scene together.\u00a0 It happened really naturally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You naturally argued with each other, huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 When I watched the movie, I love that scene.\u00a0 He was frustrated with me; and I\u2019m like, \u201cI have had that fight with my dad.\u201d\u00a0 Working with Jasmine Guy, she just\u2014man!\u2014I couldn\u2019t look at her in the face and listen to her words without reacting the way that I had.\u00a0 She is, obviously, very seasoned and had a lot of experience; and I attribute a lot of my performance to the other actors bringing it, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would like to say, on behalf of the Erwin brothers, we cast Rachel for the first time, working with her on a Michael W. Smith music video a long time ago, and just saw the spark, and kind of worked with her over the years.\u00a0 We wrote <em>October Baby<\/em> for her.\u00a0 A lot of people asked, \u201cDon\u2019t you want to audition people who are well-known?\u201d or whatever; but we felt like Rachel could just own this role, and she could blossom.\u00a0 It was beyond anything she\u2019d ever done, and so we just felt like\u2014I felt like one of those reality shows\u2014the singing reality shows\u2014you know, <em>Idol\u00ae<\/em>, and <em>X-Factor\u00ae<\/em>, and those type things, where a singer just sings a song that you don\u2019t quite know.\u00a0 They just crush it and just send it right over the fence.\u00a0 In all these scenes, we were so proud of Rachel.\u00a0 It\u2019s just such an outstanding performance.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlso, I\u2019m more the technical brother.\u00a0 I\u2019m the cinematographer and whatnot.\u00a0 Andy works with the actors.\u00a0 I think, if you look, there\u2019s not just one great performance by one actor in <em>October Baby<\/em>.\u00a0 I believe there\u2019s a great performance by a great cast, and I think Andy deserves a lot of credit for that.\u00a0 He worked with the actors; and he gets, really, what they need.\u00a0 I hope that <em>October Baby<\/em> really raises the bar in terms of level of performance.\u00a0 It\u2019s time that we offer God our very best.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Speaking of music reality shows, Andy, one of your actors in here is recognizable to anybody who has watched <em>American Idol<\/em> for the last few seasons.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy:<\/strong>\u00a0 By the way, John Schneider and Jasmine Guy took a big risk accepting these roles, and they just gave vulnerable performances that I\u2019ve never seen from either of them before.\u00a0 I was really proud of them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe felt like, with the drama side, we felt like, in order to engage such a deep emotional issue, you needed to laugh as hard as you cried.\u00a0 We felt like there had to be these moments where you were able to kind of catch your breath and be able to take a moment to take it all in.\u00a0 Otherwise, it would become too overwhelming to deal with a subject this intense.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo Chris Sligh\u2014you know Jon\u2019s and my background with music videos.\u00a0 We were at the Dove awards one year, and I ran into this big guy backstage that I had seen on American Idol.\u00a0 When I heard him say, on the air, that his main goal in being on <em>American Idol<\/em> was to make David Hasselhoff cry, I laughed out loud.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI don\u2019t care if that guy can sing.\u00a0 He needs to be in the movies.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI bumped into him backstage at the Dove awards; and I said, \u201cChris Sligh, you don\u2019t know me.\u00a0 I have a movie part for you.\u00a0 It\u2019s written for you.\u201d\u00a0 We wrote the role of B-Mac, who is this misfit, hippy nut that takes the kids on this trip in his VW minibus named Evelyn to New Orleans.\u00a0 He\u2019s their chaperone of sorts, and his goofy cousin, Austin, who\u2019s an improv comedian.\u00a0 The two of them have such a great chemistry that, literally, my main job, as a director, during those times, is\u2014Jon and I were, literally, behind the monitor, holding our mouths shut, trying not to laugh out loud and ruin the takes because the amount of outtakes we got from that is a whole another series.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 We all were.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You did a great job on that.\u00a0 One of the things that FamilyLife has championed over the years has been the plight of the orphan.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s why this movie got me so much.\u00a0 Part of the reason is it\u2019s a part of our fiber of who we are, here at FamilyLife.\u00a0 We have a ministry called Hope for Orphans\u00ae.\u00a0 As we\u2019ve talked about the needs of orphans worldwide, one of the statements that I have made at the Summit , that we\u2019re going to have in the comings months at Saddleback, is this statement.\u00a0 I say, \u201cI believe God has not overturned Roe v. Wade because the Christian community has been pro-life, but it hasn\u2019t been pro-orphan.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 That\u2019s a great statement.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This movie does a great job.\u00a0 I think you guys are just going to immediately know exactly what my point is of saying, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 We have to be pro-life; but if we\u2019re going to be pro-life, we\u2019ve got to be ready to take on the needs of the orphans, and welcome them into our homes, and wrap them in our arms, in all their brokenness, and invite them into our families.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Well there\u2019s a line for you and every other adoptive parent in the movie.\u00a0 It\u2019s meant to kind of sum up the movie, where Hannah says, \u201cThank you for wanting me.\u201d\u00a0 It is a bit of something God did in my heart.\u00a0 I say, \u201cI\u2019m pro-life, but what does that mean?\u00a0 Faith without works is dead; and true religion and undefiled is to take care of orphans and widows.\u00a0 So what am I doing?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was one of the big inspirations as to why we made this movie.\u00a0 We are trying to really walk that out.\u00a0 One of the things we\u2019re doing is\u201410 percent of the movie\u2019s profits are going into a fund we\u2019re calling \u201cEvery Life is Beautiful\u201d.\u00a0 I just want to praise all of the backing partners of the film\u2014Provident Films\u00ae, and American Family Studios\u00ae, and others that are a part of this.\u00a0 Everybody agreed to it.\u00a0 Ten percent of the profits of the movie are going into a fund we\u2019re calling \u201cEvery Life is Beautiful\u201d.\u00a0 That fund is going to be distributed to pregnancy resource centers that are on the frontlines, helping young girls deal with this decision, adoption agencies, and those that care for orphans.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wonderful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 My goal is that we can help, and that we can play a part, not only by the message of the movie, but also by the money that the movie generates.\u00a0 It\u2019s very important to me that that happens.\u00a0 Celebrating adoption was as important to us, in this movie, as taking on the issue of sanctity of life.\u00a0 Those two issues were very important to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Those two issues should be married together because, I think, that we try to separate those too much.\u00a0 A lot of the adoption agencies that we\u2019ve interacted with\u2014Jedd Medefind over at Christian Alliance for Orphans, and Mark Hall of <em>Casting Crowns<\/em>, who is a dear friend.\u00a0 He just brought home Hope, a couple of years ago, as their adoptive daughter.\u00a0 We\u2019ve seen that the response that they\u2019ve had is it shows adoption is such a beautiful alternative to abortion\u2014marrying the two concepts together of celebrating the beauty of life rather than it just being a political issue.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sometimes, it\u2019s very easy to be against something.\u00a0 It\u2019s very difficult to roll up your sleeves, and be <em>for<\/em> something, and for that to translate into your behavior.\u00a0 That\u2019s what we hope the movie will lead to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t agree with you more.\u00a0 I think the Christian community, many times, is known by what we\u2019re pointing our fingers at and condemning.\u00a0 You don\u2019t get that feeling at all from this movie.\u00a0 It\u2019s just extremely well done, and is one that I think every family needs to celebrate life and take their kids to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How important is an opening weekend for a movie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 What a phenomenal question.\u00a0 You know, I had no idea\u2014\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s a soft ball that I tossed to you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you for that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s the one that I wrote down for you right there.\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had no idea\u2014number one, how expensive it was to release a movie in theaters.\u00a0 All the movie studios were afraid of <em>October Baby\u2014<\/em>said it was too polarizing.\u00a0 Some, very passionate believers, came to the table to fund this thing\u2014getting in theaters, at a tremendous financial risk\u2014that I\u2019m forever in their debt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBasically, a movie will impact the culture.\u00a0 This has been our movie.\u00a0 We\u2019re giving it, now, to the audience.\u00a0 If it performs financially, it will stay in theaters and keep touching lives.\u00a0 If it really performs, Hollywood will take notice that this is an issue we feel passionate about and we want to support by going out to the theaters.\u00a0 I am asking everybody, that\u2019s listening to your program, please go see <em>October Baby<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you want to know where it\u2019s playing\u2014it\u2019s playing all over the country:\u00a0 OctoberBabyMovie.net.\u00a0 If for some reason it\u2019s not playing in your area, you can form an action squad and bring it to your area.\u00a0 We need people to support it this weekend.\u00a0 Take a group; get your church involved.\u00a0 I hope that, by going and seeing an entertaining movie, we can get together and celebrate life, as one voice together, at the movie theater.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We should mention that this film actually has some inspiration in a true-life story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it does.\u00a0 In fact, the person who brought <em>October Baby<\/em> to my attention, initially, Paul Pennington, who heads up Hope for Orphans\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hope for Orphans, yes.\u00a0 Paul\u2019s a good friend.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Paul wrote me an email, I think before the movie was out.\u00a0 He had heard about it and recommended that I take a look at it.\u00a0 He sent me a link to a speech that was given in front of the Australian parliament; and it was done by Gianna Jessen, who was a survivor of a saline solution abortion.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to tell you, I\u2019m not into listening to 12- to 15- minute video messages on the internet, but I sat there spellbound.\u00a0 I forwarded the link of the message to all my adult children and got all kinds of feedback from my kids, who listened to it, as well.\u00a0 It\u2019s a spellbinding message; and I, frankly, hope we can someday bring it to our listeners, here at FamilyLife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ve put a link to the video on our website, FamilyLifeToday.com.\u00a0 If folks want to view what you viewed, they can go there and see it. Gianna\u2019s story really was the kernel that led to <em>October Baby<\/em>; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Andy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Gianna is just an amazing, amazing person that has really impacted us.\u00a0 I think Jon should talk to that because the story was one that captivated his heart first.\u00a0 Her story, specifically, is something that really challenged him.\u00a0 Jon?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think if you think about somebody like Gianna, she\u2019s one of the most beautiful people I\u2019ve ever met.\u00a0 She has cerebral palsy as a result of a saline abortion, but she\u2019s just\u2014her spirit is amazing.\u00a0 Imagine the beauty that the world would have lost if she didn\u2019t have the right to exist.\u00a0 Imagine how many times we have denied beauty from entering the world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was her story that I heard at a pro-life event that I was mesmerized by.\u00a0 Then, I began to study the issue for myself, and was devastated by it, and felt like I had to do something about it.\u00a0 So, Gianna has become a great friend.\u00a0 She actually sings in the movie.\u00a0 There\u2019s a song when Hannah is walking to a cathedral;
