right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve mentioned that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the movie that comes out next weekend kind of choked you up when you watched it; didn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, man.\u00a0 This may be one of those movies\u2014one of the first movies that I watched before you did, I think.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I watched it before you did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I got it a couple of days before I passed it along to you.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Ah-h-h.\u00a0 You always have to be ahead of me in these things.\u00a0 We have some folks here who are part of a brand-new movie that you watched first, <em>October Baby<\/em>.\u00a0 Jon Erwin and Rachel Hendrix join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Rachel, Jon, welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you so much for having us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 It\u2019s great to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rachel, this is your debut as an actress; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, my first feature film.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 First feature film.\u00a0 And Jon, you\u2019ve done a number of music videos, won a number of Dove awards.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But is this your first film?\u00a0 I know you made one with your brother when you were a teenager.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve been working together, literally since I was 14 and he was 17; and we\u2019ve been making all kinds of stuff.\u00a0 Yes, done a lot of music videos, and documentaries, and a bunch of stuff.\u00a0 We have won some awards for music videos that we\u2019ve done in the Christian space; but this is our first time to really venture out and tell our own story, as a feature film, that we feel like God put on our hearts\u2014something we feel like is important.\u00a0 Hopefully, the audience will feel that way, as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If we could go back and see that film from when you were 14 and he was 17, what was the story of that one?\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, this is embarrassing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is your brother, Andy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 My brother.\u00a0 Yes, we flipped a coin on who would come on the show.\u00a0 My brother Andy and I are partners in crime, and we co-direct and produce.\u00a0 We\u2019ve worked, literally, together for 15 years, since we were teenagers.\u00a0 It started at a place called Word of Life Island, a little island in Schroon Lake, New York\u2014a camp where 500 kids would come every week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 When I was 14 and he was 17, around about there, we did a video for the island.\u00a0 We would have these little hike cameras, and we would make these videos.\u00a0 They would be commercials or weekend review pieces.\u00a0 We did this big, epic extravaganza called <em>Summer Knights<\/em>.\u00a0 It was like <em>Knights of the Round Table<\/em>, and I thought it was really an epic.\u00a0 I thought it was incredible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The most awesome.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 The most awesome thing ever.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Sound of Music\u2014<\/em>in that category?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 It blew away <em>Sound of Music, <\/em>in my mind, at the time, when I was 14.\u00a0 We showed this to 500 screaming kids, and the thought was that they would stand and cheer.\u00a0 That would have been the goal.\u00a0 I sat dead center of 500 kids, and the video played.\u00a0 It was awful.\u00a0 I thought it was great; but in retrospect, it was awful.\u00a0 Literally, it ended dead silent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They didn\u2019t boo, though.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, no.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what happened.\u00a0 The guy beside me said, \u201cIs that it?\u201d when it was over.\u00a0 It literally shattered me.\u00a0 To this day, when we screen our films, I won\u2019t be in the theater.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be like pacing the hallways.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 We\u2019ve gotten better from there, but that\u2019s where the journey started.\u00a0 God just put us in entertainment very early, and then He began to shape our skill.\u00a0 Then, He began to really transform our hearts and realize how we could use this amazing thing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLike you said, <em>It\u2019s a Wonderful Life\u2014<\/em>that\u2019s a movie I go see every year.\u00a0 I heard something that said, \u201cPain is temporary.\u00a0 Film is forever.\u201d\u00a0 We say that a lot on our film sets.\u00a0 The idea is that everybody associated with that film is gone; but the film lives on and the message of the film lives on.\u00a0 There\u2019s just something so special about films and what they can do in our culture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I wanted to make sure you told the story about a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old making an epic film because there are moms and dads listening who have kids who are all over technology.\u00a0 They\u2019re making videos, and they\u2019re doing stuff.\u00a0 They\u2019re wondering, \u201cMan, this is a waste of time.\u201d\u00a0 But you never know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 You never know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014how God will be building a fire in the heart of a young man or a young lady who may be performing, maybe a Christmas play\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I have my funny 14-year-old stories about acting, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, go ahead.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Go ahead.\u00a0 Tell us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we get started in small things.\u00a0 I think, when I was 15, I auditioned for <em>Guys and Dolls<\/em>.\u00a0 We did a joint production at our two rival high schools.\u00a0 I auditioned for the lead, Sarah.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve ever seen <em>Guys and Dolls<\/em>.\u00a0 Well, she\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The Salvation Army lady; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 She\u2019s a singer, and you have a lot of singing parts.\u00a0 I got up on stage, and I auditioned.\u00a0 I just \u2013oh, I just froze.\u00a0 My voice was, \u201cAh-e-ah-e-ah\u201d, trying to sing, you know.\u00a0 My knees are literally knocking; and they\u2019re like, \u201cOh-h- ka-a-y. Well, go stand over there, with all the other rejects; and we\u2019ll find a place for you.\u201d\u00a0 I got cast as a crap-shooter.\u00a0 I played a man!\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I played a crap-shooter in <em>Guys and Dolls.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So who was wounded deeper on this deal\u2014Jon in his debut or you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was pretty messed up.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I did wear lipstick, though.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure the audience was very confused about that crap-shooter, Number 12, over there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We should say the movie we\u2019re talking about, <em>October Baby\u2014<\/em>Rachel, you have the lead role\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in the film.\u00a0 Jon, you and your brother directed it, wrote it, and produced it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, uh-huh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell us the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>October Baby<\/em> is a movie I probably would have avoided as a first movie.\u00a0 It\u2019s an issue I probably would have avoided, but God captured my heart with the issue.\u00a0 I was working on the movie <em>Courageous<\/em>.\u00a0 I was directing second unit, and Alex Kendrick\u2014a great guy; a great friend\u2014looked me in the eye and said, \u201cWhat\u2019s your purpose and what\u2019s the purpose of your work?\u201d\u00a0 That really penetrated my heart because, at the point, I hadn\u2019t really decided where I fit.\u00a0 Then, around that time, I learned that two words could fit together that I didn\u2019t know could fit together\u2014that\u2019s the word, \u201cabortion\u201d, and the word, \u201csurvivor.\u201d\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know that that was a reality\u2014that somebody could survive an abortion and have ongoing effects forever.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s a heavy subject; but I felt like, \u201cWhat if you wrapped it in an entertaining film?\u00a0 What if you told a story?\u201d\u00a0 The story of <em>October Baby<\/em> is about a young, beautiful girl that your heart just goes out to\u201419-year-old, Hannah.\u00a0 She discovers that she\u2019s adopted and was never told because she\u2019s the survivor of an abortion.\u00a0 She has to go on a road-trip, a journey to find her birthmother, to find answers, to find who she is.\u00a0 Ultimately, it becomes a story about the power of forgiveness\u2014about how amazing and powerful forgiveness can be.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the first thing a film has to be is entertaining.\u00a0 We go to the movies to be entertained.\u00a0 Hopefully, <em>October Baby <\/em>is an entertaining piece of art that people go see, and they\u2019ll laugh, they\u2019ll cry, they\u2019ll be motivated\u2014they\u2019ll just feel great, leaving the theater; but it will make them think about life and the sanctity of life\u2014not tell them what to think, but make them think for themselves.\u00a0 Sometimes we\u2019re so preoccupied that we don\u2019t think about the important life issues today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Movie clip]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Woman:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your mother came back the next day.\u00a0 She said she wanted to finish the procedure\u2014that she had to go to school.\u00a0 She had to have a career, and she knew she couldn\u2019t do that with the baby.\u00a0 This was the only way.\u00a0 I took one look at her; and I knew she was in labor, and too young and na\u00efve to know it.\u00a0 I had two choices.\u00a0 I chose to take her to the hospital.\u00a0 When we got there, she was ready to deliver.\u00a0 She begged me to stay.\u00a0 I was really the only one she had, so I did.\u00a0 Your brother came first.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 Brother?\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry.\u00a0 What are you talking about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Woman:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hannah, your mother was carrying twins, and your brother came first.\u00a0 I\u2019ll always remember him.\u00a0 He was so teeny.\u00a0 He was less than a pound.\u00a0 I saw him shakin\u2019 there.\u00a0 But you were the big surprise.\u00a0 Nobody knew about you, not even your mother.\u00a0 When you came out\u2014big eyes\u2014just beautiful\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 [Studio]\u00a0 My goal is for people to go see it and really come out of the theater, having had a great experience of entertainment, thinking, \u201cWhat do I believe about this issue?\u00a0 The Bible says faith without works is dead, so how does my belief\u2014how should that translate into my behavior, into what I do?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the goal.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I hope that people can do this weekend, and I hope that\u2019s what we can do in the masses\u2014is just by going and seeing an entertaining movie, you\u2019re becoming a part of a voice, where we\u2019re all celebrating the beauty of life together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rachel, Jon admitted he\u2019d never dreamed he would be making his first film around the issue of abortion and protecting life.\u00a0 What about you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it\u2019s a jump for both of us, I think, to have this subject matter be the undercurrent of a film.\u00a0 It\u2019s a coming-of-age story and all of the things that happen to this 19-year-old, who is searching for answers.\u00a0 Our hope is that we\u2019ve taken this chance and dealt with a subject gracefully, and gently, and beautifully\u2014that it is well-received.\u00a0 That\u2019s our hope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You really did do a good job of addressing the subject\u2014yet, not making it in neon lights, flashing\u2014that this is a film about protecting life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I like how you said it.\u00a0 It is a story about a 19-year-old young lady, a college freshman, who is a human being, who has a story around her life.\u00a0 I still want to know, if I\u2019d known you in high school or college, would I have known you as being someone who really had strong convictions about those issues, as a young lady?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think so, but you\u2019d probably have to ask the people around me.\u00a0 I was kind of a\u2014I don\u2019t want to say I was a recluse\u2014but I always wanted to be involved in making art, in whatever facet.\u00a0 I think I, in my youth, I wouldn\u2019t say I was a very big talker.\u00a0 I guess, this is a sad fact\u2014I probably wouldn\u2019t have spoken up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But you had the convictions, though.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to applaud you, as an artist, and you, as an artist as well, Jon, for using your craft of your trade to proclaim your convictions because others are doing that in other ways that are not honoring, I think, what God honors in the Scriptures.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I was reading <em>USA Today<\/em> this morning.\u00a0 There was an interview with George Lucas, where he said every film has a message.\u00a0 Every film is basically a world-view.\u00a0 I think that it\u2019s time Christians engaged the arts.\u00a0 This is a place, I think\u2014the verse that God gave Andy and me is a verse in Acts that says, \u201cDavid served the purposes of God in his generation and fell asleep.\u201d\u00a0 I heard Rick Warren say, \u201cDavid gave God\u2019s truth, what never changed, to his generation that was constantly changing.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have to constantly find ways of doing that.\u00a0 I just believe that the finest way of doing that today is a movie.\u00a0 An entertaining movie can get a message across to this generation, and it can really make them think.\u00a0 I\u2019m just glad that God moved in my heart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a scary transition for me, from music videos\u2014from Andy and me doing that\u2014from where people would hire us to venturing out and doing something like this for ourselves.\u00a0 Obviously, it wasn\u2019t that we thought the concept was marketable; it was from conviction.\u00a0 We felt we just had to do something.\u00a0 My hope is that the audience will join us.\u00a0 This has been our movie.\u00a0 Now, we\u2019re giving it to the audience; and I hope we can all stand up and celebrate life together, by seeing an entertaining movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This story\u2014when you sat down to write\u2014you had a wide-open white canvas.\u00a0 You could write whatever you wanted.\u00a0 How did the story come together; and did you start off by saying, \u201cLet\u2019s do something about adoption,\u201d or \u201cLet\u2019s do something about the pro-life message\u201d?\u00a0 Where did it come from?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what I love about film.\u00a0 That\u2019s what keeps me doing it\u2014is that you can stare at a blank piece of paper and come up with an idea, and that translates.\u00a0 It becomes real, and then people can experience it.\u00a0 It\u2019s an amazing thing!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wish I could say there was some brilliant moment where I had <em>October Baby<\/em>, but I\u2019m totally ADD.\u00a0 I was, literally, driving with my wife; and she\u2019s a planner.\u00a0 She was planning out, at the time, the rest of our lives.\u00a0 She was basically saying, \u201cThe birth of our second child\u2014if he or she was born in this month, we would get this kind of wardrobe.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWhat if we had a November baby?\u00a0 What if we had a September baby?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m just kind of clued out of the conversation.\u00a0 Then, she said, \u201cWhat if we had an October baby?\u201d\u00a0 It just kind of stopped me in my tracks; and I said, \u201cOctober Baby.\u00a0 That would be a great coming-of-age story about a young girl, trying to find herself.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that fits!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Why October versus September or December?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 That\u2019s just where the idea came from.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Like any filmmaker does, I put it in the \u201cidea vault\u201d.\u00a0 There are several things there.\u00a0 I just became aware of the fact that the words, \u201cabortion\u201d, and the word, \u201csurvivor\u201d, go together.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know that.\u00a0 I was so profoundly moved by that.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know what to do about it, but I felt I had to do something about it\u2014to bring awareness to this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t want to make an \u201cus\u201d-versus-\u201cthem\u201d piece on abortion, or, \u201cWe\u2019re the good guys; they\u2019re the bad guys,\u201d or a political piece.\u00a0 There\u2019s a line in the film that says, \u201cTo be human is to be beautifully flawed.\u201d\u00a0 I believe that, and I believe that there is hope, and redemption, and grace, no matter what we do in life.\u00a0 I began to think, \u201cWhat do I do about this?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI heard James Cameron speak about <em>Avatar<\/em>.\u00a0 He said he became passionate about our relationship to the earth, the environment, and all this stuff.\u00a0 He said his issue was boring, so he said he became subversive and injected his issue into a blockbuster so that people seeing the blockbuster would be evangelized to his point of view.\u00a0 I was so convicted because I said, \u201cThat\u2019s so shrewd.\u00a0 That\u2019s so wise.\u201d\u00a0 The verse, \u201cin their generation wiser than the children of light\u201d came to mind.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI have this thing that I\u2019m convicted about.\u00a0 What if I put it into this entertaining idea that I had about a young girl trying to find herself?\u00a0 What if the catalyst of the story is she finds this out about herself, and she has to deal with it?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve always talked about the issue; but very rarely have we looked at the person, at the victim.\u00a0 So this would be a lens into looking at the person, and that would be a very interesting lens.\u00a0 Hopefully, it would create a lot of conversation.\u00a0 Hopefully, it\u2019s a bit of a new lens on the pro-life issue and something that people can use as a conversation starter. It\u2019s amazing that it\u2019s not in your face.\u00a0 We screened the film out in California, and a lady came up to us at a secular film festival.\u00a0 She said, \u201cI\u2019m an atheist.\u00a0 I\u2019m a liberal.\u00a0 I don\u2019t agree, but I can\u2019t deny that the character in your story is a victim.\u00a0 You\u2019ve made me think.\u00a0 I have to think about my stance on this issue.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA mom took her daughter.\u00a0 She raised her daughter pro-life, a very conservative Christian.\u00a0 Her daughter had gone off to school, become very liberal, become pro-choice; and they watched the movie together.\u00a0 Without any argument, her daughter said, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I\u2019m pro-life now because of what\u2019s in that movie.\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen it through a new lens.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s our hope\u2014that it can do stuff like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rachel, do you remember reading the script for the first time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do.\u00a0 It was January, 2010.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What was the experience?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I sat down and read the whole thing, beginning to end, in my living room.\u00a0 I think, towards the last three or four pages, I was weeping.\u00a0 I was just very emotionally affected.\u00a0 He told me the plot, and told me what it was about.\u00a0 I think the stuff that really penetrated my heart was the reconciliation, and the restoration of her relationship with her father, which also is something that I can connect with personally.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was reading that, all these emotions were flooding; and I remember just having an experience, for myself, not necessarily just what the story was\u2014to wrap up\u2014and say that the script and everything\u2014the gamut of emotions that Hannah has to show, throughout everything, is intense.\u00a0 As Jon and Andy said, \u201cWe wrote this for you, so I hope you can do it.\u00a0 Yay!\u00a0 Here you go.\u201d\u00a0 I remember just thinking, \u201cWow. It\u2019s going to be amazing to be a part of this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I never saw the script, but I did see the movie.\u00a0 I was sideswiped.\u00a0 You got me!\u00a0 What you don\u2019t know about Barbara and me is we have an adopted daughter, and the search for her birth mother continues.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was powerful.\u00a0 It really was powerful\u00a0\u00a0 Rachel, you did a good job.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how much we want to reveal here of the plot because it was such a delight.\u00a0 Can I say that as I cry?\u00a0 I can\u2014a delight to see how God orchestrated events, not in a plastic or in a veneer-type of way\u2014where it was real surfacey\u2014but it was real life.\u00a0 It was real people encountering a real story, a 19-year-old girl.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was not ready.\u00a0 You had me because it wasn\u2019t front and center.\u00a0 I was really caught up in Hannah\u2019s life, and what was taking place there, because I\u2019ve had a Hannah; you know?\u00a0 I think this is going to be a great movie, for a lot of reasons\u2014the story\u2014but also, and I told this to Bob, Jon, I just thought your production values and your shots really showed phenomenal excellence and honors God\u2014really, with quality that\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPeople aren\u2019t going to go to this and they aren\u2019t going to say\u2014and I\u2019ve used this phrase too many times here in the last couple of years\u2014but it\u2019s not a cheesy, Christian film.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 You can put it in there with the best of them.\u00a0 You guys made a great team, and you did a great job.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you for that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is one of those movies you can take your too.\u00a0 They\u2019re not going to be bored.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019re going to fall right in the middle of this, and they\u2019re going to identify with the emotions and the ebb and flow of what\u2019s taking place there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that we should say it\u2019s not geared toward younger children.\u00a0 You\u2019d want to take your adolescents, your Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0\u00a0 We\u2019ll talk today about the new movie, <em>October Baby<\/em>, and about the power of a story to influence how we think.\u00a0\u00a0 Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us on the Thursday edition.\u00a0 I\u2019ve confessed many times here, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, that every year, when I watch <em>It\u2019s a Wonderful Life\u2014<\/em>when it gets to the part where they find Zuzu\u2019s petals in Jimmy Stewarts\u2019 pocket, it kind of chokes me up; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve mentioned that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the movie that comes out next weekend kind of choked you up when you watched it; didn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, man.\u00a0 This may be one of those movies\u2014one of the first movies that I watched before you did, I think.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I watched it before you did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I got it a couple of days before I passed it along to you.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Ah-h-h.\u00a0 You always have to be ahead of me in these things.\u00a0 We have some folks here who are part of a brand-new movie that you watched first, <em>October Baby<\/em>.\u00a0 Jon Erwin and Rachel Hendrix join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Rachel, Jon, welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you so much for having us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 It\u2019s great to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rachel, this is your debut as an actress; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, my first feature film.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 First feature film.\u00a0 And Jon, you\u2019ve done a number of music videos, won a number of Dove awards.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But is this your first film?\u00a0 I know you made one with your brother when you were a teenager.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve been working together, literally since I was 14 and he was 17; and we\u2019ve been making all kinds of stuff.\u00a0 Yes, done a lot of music videos, and documentaries, and a bunch of stuff.\u00a0 We have won some awards for music videos that we\u2019ve done in the Christian space; but this is our first time to really venture out and tell our own story, as a feature film, that we feel like God put on our hearts\u2014something we feel like is important.\u00a0 Hopefully, the audience will feel that way, as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If we could go back and see that film from when you were 14 and he was 17, what was the story of that one?\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, this is embarrassing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is your brother, Andy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 My brother.\u00a0 Yes, we flipped a coin on who would come on the show.\u00a0 My brother Andy and I are partners in crime, and we co-direct and produce.\u00a0 We\u2019ve worked, literally, together for 15 years, since we were teenagers.\u00a0 It started at a place called Word of Life Island, a little island in Schroon Lake, New York\u2014a camp where 500 kids would come every week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 When I was 14 and he was 17, around about there, we did a video for the island.\u00a0 We would have these little hike cameras, and we would make these videos.\u00a0 They would be commercials or weekend review pieces.\u00a0 We did this big, epic extravaganza called <em>Summer Knights<\/em>.\u00a0 It was like <em>Knights of the Round Table<\/em>, and I thought it was really an epic.\u00a0 I thought it was incredible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The most awesome.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 The most awesome thing ever.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Sound of Music\u2014<\/em>in that category?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 It blew away <em>Sound of Music, <\/em>in my mind, at the time, when I was 14.\u00a0 We showed this to 500 screaming kids, and the thought was that they would stand and cheer.\u00a0 That would have been the goal.\u00a0 I sat dead center of 500 kids, and the video played.\u00a0 It was awful.\u00a0 I thought it was great; but in retrospect, it was awful.\u00a0 Literally, it ended dead silent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They didn\u2019t boo, though.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, no.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what happened.\u00a0 The guy beside me said, \u201cIs that it?\u201d when it was over.\u00a0 It literally shattered me.\u00a0 To this day, when we screen our films, I won\u2019t be in the theater.\u00a0 I\u2019ll be like pacing the hallways.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 We\u2019ve gotten better from there, but that\u2019s where the journey started.\u00a0 God just put us in entertainment very early, and then He began to shape our skill.\u00a0 Then, He began to really transform our hearts and realize how we could use this amazing thing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLike you said, <em>It\u2019s a Wonderful Life\u2014<\/em>that\u2019s a movie I go see every year.\u00a0 I heard something that said, \u201cPain is temporary.\u00a0 Film is forever.\u201d\u00a0 We say that a lot on our film sets.\u00a0 The idea is that everybody associated with that film is gone; but the film lives on and the message of the film lives on.\u00a0 There\u2019s just something so special about films and what they can do in our culture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I wanted to make sure you told the story about a 14-year-old and a 17-year-old making an epic film because there are moms and dads listening who have kids who are all over technology.\u00a0 They\u2019re making videos, and they\u2019re doing stuff.\u00a0 They\u2019re wondering, \u201cMan, this is a waste of time.\u201d\u00a0 But you never know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 You never know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014how God will be building a fire in the heart of a young man or a young lady who may be performing, maybe a Christmas play\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I have my funny 14-year-old stories about acting, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, go ahead.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Go ahead.\u00a0 Tell us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we get started in small things.\u00a0 I think, when I was 15, I auditioned for <em>Guys and Dolls<\/em>.\u00a0 We did a joint production at our two rival high schools.\u00a0 I auditioned for the lead, Sarah.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ve ever seen <em>Guys and Dolls<\/em>.\u00a0 Well, she\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The Salvation Army lady; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 She\u2019s a singer, and you have a lot of singing parts.\u00a0 I got up on stage, and I auditioned.\u00a0 I just \u2013oh, I just froze.\u00a0 My voice was, \u201cAh-e-ah-e-ah\u201d, trying to sing, you know.\u00a0 My knees are literally knocking; and they\u2019re like, \u201cOh-h- ka-a-y. Well, go stand over there, with all the other rejects; and we\u2019ll find a place for you.\u201d\u00a0 I got cast as a crap-shooter.\u00a0 I played a man!\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I played a crap-shooter in <em>Guys and Dolls.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So who was wounded deeper on this deal\u2014Jon in his debut or you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was pretty messed up.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I did wear lipstick, though.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure the audience was very confused about that crap-shooter, Number 12, over there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We should say the movie we\u2019re talking about, <em>October Baby\u2014<\/em>Rachel, you have the lead role\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in the film.\u00a0 Jon, you and your brother directed it, wrote it, and produced it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, uh-huh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell us the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>October Baby<\/em> is a movie I probably would have avoided as a first movie.\u00a0 It\u2019s an issue I probably would have avoided, but God captured my heart with the issue.\u00a0 I was working on the movie <em>Courageous<\/em>.\u00a0 I was directing second unit, and Alex Kendrick\u2014a great guy; a great friend\u2014looked me in the eye and said, \u201cWhat\u2019s your purpose and what\u2019s the purpose of your work?\u201d\u00a0 That really penetrated my heart because, at the point, I hadn\u2019t really decided where I fit.\u00a0 Then, around that time, I learned that two words could fit together that I didn\u2019t know could fit together\u2014that\u2019s the word, \u201cabortion\u201d, and the word, \u201csurvivor.\u201d\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know that that was a reality\u2014that somebody could survive an abortion and have ongoing effects forever.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s a heavy subject; but I felt like, \u201cWhat if you wrapped it in an entertaining film?\u00a0 What if you told a story?\u201d\u00a0 The story of <em>October Baby<\/em> is about a young, beautiful girl that your heart just goes out to\u201419-year-old, Hannah.\u00a0 She discovers that she\u2019s adopted and was never told because she\u2019s the survivor of an abortion.\u00a0 She has to go on a road-trip, a journey to find her birthmother, to find answers, to find who she is.\u00a0 Ultimately, it becomes a story about the power of forgiveness\u2014about how amazing and powerful forgiveness can be.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the first thing a film has to be is entertaining.\u00a0 We go to the movies to be entertained.\u00a0 Hopefully, <em>October Baby <\/em>is an entertaining piece of art that people go see, and they\u2019ll laugh, they\u2019ll cry, they\u2019ll be motivated\u2014they\u2019ll just feel great, leaving the theater; but it will make them think about life and the sanctity of life\u2014not tell them what to think, but make them think for themselves.\u00a0 Sometimes we\u2019re so preoccupied that we don\u2019t think about the important life issues today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[Movie clip]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Woman:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your mother came back the next day.\u00a0 She said she wanted to finish the procedure\u2014that she had to go to school.\u00a0 She had to have a career, and she knew she couldn\u2019t do that with the baby.\u00a0 This was the only way.\u00a0 I took one look at her; and I knew she was in labor, and too young and na\u00efve to know it.\u00a0 I had two choices.\u00a0 I chose to take her to the hospital.\u00a0 When we got there, she was ready to deliver.\u00a0 She begged me to stay.\u00a0 I was really the only one she had, so I did.\u00a0 Your brother came first.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Hannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 Brother?\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry.\u00a0 What are you talking about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Woman:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hannah, your mother was carrying twins, and your brother came first.\u00a0 I\u2019ll always remember him.\u00a0 He was so teeny.\u00a0 He was less than a pound.\u00a0 I saw him shakin\u2019 there.\u00a0 But you were the big surprise.\u00a0 Nobody knew about you, not even your mother.\u00a0 When you came out\u2014big eyes\u2014just beautiful\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 [Studio]\u00a0 My goal is for people to go see it and really come out of the theater, having had a great experience of entertainment, thinking, \u201cWhat do I believe about this issue?\u00a0 The Bible says faith without works is dead, so how does my belief\u2014how should that translate into my behavior, into what I do?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s the goal.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I hope that people can do this weekend, and I hope that\u2019s what we can do in the masses\u2014is just by going and seeing an entertaining movie, you\u2019re becoming a part of a voice, where we\u2019re all celebrating the beauty of life together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rachel, Jon admitted he\u2019d never dreamed he would be making his first film around the issue of abortion and protecting life.\u00a0 What about you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it\u2019s a jump for both of us, I think, to have this subject matter be the undercurrent of a film.\u00a0 It\u2019s a coming-of-age story and all of the things that happen to this 19-year-old, who is searching for answers.\u00a0 Our hope is that we\u2019ve taken this chance and dealt with a subject gracefully, and gently, and beautifully\u2014that it is well-received.\u00a0 That\u2019s our hope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You really did do a good job of addressing the subject\u2014yet, not making it in neon lights, flashing\u2014that this is a film about protecting life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I like how you said it.\u00a0 It is a story about a 19-year-old young lady, a college freshman, who is a human being, who has a story around her life.\u00a0 I still want to know, if I\u2019d known you in high school or college, would I have known you as being someone who really had strong convictions about those issues, as a young lady?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think so, but you\u2019d probably have to ask the people around me.\u00a0 I was kind of a\u2014I don\u2019t want to say I was a recluse\u2014but I always wanted to be involved in making art, in whatever facet.\u00a0 I think I, in my youth, I wouldn\u2019t say I was a very big talker.\u00a0 I guess, this is a sad fact\u2014I probably wouldn\u2019t have spoken up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But you had the convictions, though.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to applaud you, as an artist, and you, as an artist as well, Jon, for using your craft of your trade to proclaim your convictions because others are doing that in other ways that are not honoring, I think, what God honors in the Scriptures.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I was reading <em>USA Today<\/em> this morning.\u00a0 There was an interview with George Lucas, where he said every film has a message.\u00a0 Every film is basically a world-view.\u00a0 I think that it\u2019s time Christians engaged the arts.\u00a0 This is a place, I think\u2014the verse that God gave Andy and me is a verse in Acts that says, \u201cDavid served the purposes of God in his generation and fell asleep.\u201d\u00a0 I heard Rick Warren say, \u201cDavid gave God\u2019s truth, what never changed, to his generation that was constantly changing.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have to constantly find ways of doing that.\u00a0 I just believe that the finest way of doing that today is a movie.\u00a0 An entertaining movie can get a message across to this generation, and it can really make them think.\u00a0 I\u2019m just glad that God moved in my heart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a scary transition for me, from music videos\u2014from Andy and me doing that\u2014from where people would hire us to venturing out and doing something like this for ourselves.\u00a0 Obviously, it wasn\u2019t that we thought the concept was marketable; it was from conviction.\u00a0 We felt we just had to do something.\u00a0 My hope is that the audience will join us.\u00a0 This has been our movie.\u00a0 Now, we\u2019re giving it to the audience; and I hope we can all stand up and celebrate life together, by seeing an entertaining movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This story\u2014when you sat down to write\u2014you had a wide-open white canvas.\u00a0 You could write whatever you wanted.\u00a0 How did the story come together; and did you start off by saying, \u201cLet\u2019s do something about adoption,\u201d or \u201cLet\u2019s do something about the pro-life message\u201d?\u00a0 Where did it come from?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what I love about film.\u00a0 That\u2019s what keeps me doing it\u2014is that you can stare at a blank piece of paper and come up with an idea, and that translates.\u00a0 It becomes real, and then people can experience it.\u00a0 It\u2019s an amazing thing!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wish I could say there was some brilliant moment where I had <em>October Baby<\/em>, but I\u2019m totally ADD.\u00a0 I was, literally, driving with my wife; and she\u2019s a planner.\u00a0 She was planning out, at the time, the rest of our lives.\u00a0 She was basically saying, \u201cThe birth of our second child\u2014if he or she was born in this month, we would get this kind of wardrobe.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWhat if we had a November baby?\u00a0 What if we had a September baby?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m just kind of clued out of the conversation.\u00a0 Then, she said, \u201cWhat if we had an October baby?\u201d\u00a0 It just kind of stopped me in my tracks; and I said, \u201cOctober Baby.\u00a0 That would be a great coming-of-age story about a young girl, trying to find herself.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that fits!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Why October versus September or December?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 That\u2019s just where the idea came from.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Like any filmmaker does, I put it in the \u201cidea vault\u201d.\u00a0 There are several things there.\u00a0 I just became aware of the fact that the words, \u201cabortion\u201d, and the word, \u201csurvivor\u201d, go together.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know that.\u00a0 I was so profoundly moved by that.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know what to do about it, but I felt I had to do something about it\u2014to bring awareness to this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t want to make an \u201cus\u201d-versus-\u201cthem\u201d piece on abortion, or, \u201cWe\u2019re the good guys; they\u2019re the bad guys,\u201d or a political piece.\u00a0 There\u2019s a line in the film that says, \u201cTo be human is to be beautifully flawed.\u201d\u00a0 I believe that, and I believe that there is hope, and redemption, and grace, no matter what we do in life.\u00a0 I began to think, \u201cWhat do I do about this?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI heard James Cameron speak about <em>Avatar<\/em>.\u00a0 He said he became passionate about our relationship to the earth, the environment, and all this stuff.\u00a0 He said his issue was boring, so he said he became subversive and injected his issue into a blockbuster so that people seeing the blockbuster would be evangelized to his point of view.\u00a0 I was so convicted because I said, \u201cThat\u2019s so shrewd.\u00a0 That\u2019s so wise.\u201d\u00a0 The verse, \u201cin their generation wiser than the children of light\u201d came to mind.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI have this thing that I\u2019m convicted about.\u00a0 What if I put it into this entertaining idea that I had about a young girl trying to find herself?\u00a0 What if the catalyst of the story is she finds this out about herself, and she has to deal with it?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve always talked about the issue; but very rarely have we looked at the person, at the victim.\u00a0 So this would be a lens into looking at the person, and that would be a very interesting lens.\u00a0 Hopefully, it would create a lot of conversation.\u00a0 Hopefully, it\u2019s a bit of a new lens on the pro-life issue and something that people can use as a conversation starter. It\u2019s amazing that it\u2019s not in your face.\u00a0 We screened the film out in California, and a lady came up to us at a secular film festival.\u00a0 She said, \u201cI\u2019m an atheist.\u00a0 I\u2019m a liberal.\u00a0 I don\u2019t agree, but I can\u2019t deny that the character in your story is a victim.\u00a0 You\u2019ve made me think.\u00a0 I have to think about my stance on this issue.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA mom took her daughter.\u00a0 She raised her daughter pro-life, a very conservative Christian.\u00a0 Her daughter had gone off to school, become very liberal, become pro-choice; and they watched the movie together.\u00a0 Without any argument, her daughter said, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I\u2019m pro-life now because of what\u2019s in that movie.\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen it through a new lens.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s our hope\u2014that it can do stuff like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rachel, do you remember reading the script for the first time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do.\u00a0 It was January, 2010.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What was the experience?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I sat down and read the whole thing, beginning to end, in my living room.\u00a0 I think, towards the last three or four pages, I was weeping.\u00a0 I was just very emotionally affected.\u00a0 He told me the plot, and told me what it was about.\u00a0 I think the stuff that really penetrated my heart was the reconciliation, and the restoration of her relationship with her father, which also is something that I can connect with personally.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was reading that, all these emotions were flooding; and I remember just having an experience, for myself, not necessarily just what the story was\u2014to wrap up\u2014and say that the script and everything\u2014the gamut of emotions that Hannah has to show, throughout everything, is intense.\u00a0 As Jon and Andy said, \u201cWe wrote this for you, so I hope you can do it.\u00a0 Yay!\u00a0 Here you go.\u201d\u00a0 I remember just thinking, \u201cWow. It\u2019s going to be amazing to be a part of this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I never saw the script, but I did see the movie.\u00a0 I was sideswiped.\u00a0 You got me!\u00a0 What you don\u2019t know about Barbara and me is we have an adopted daughter, and the search for her birth mother continues.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was powerful.\u00a0 It really was powerful\u00a0\u00a0 Rachel, you did a good job.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how much we want to reveal here of the plot because it was such a delight.\u00a0 Can I say that as I cry?\u00a0 I can\u2014a delight to see how God orchestrated events, not in a plastic or in a veneer-type of way\u2014where it was real surfacey\u2014but it was real life.\u00a0 It was real people encountering a real story, a 19-year-old girl.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was not ready.\u00a0 You had me because it wasn\u2019t front and center.\u00a0 I was really caught up in Hannah\u2019s life, and what was taking place there, because I\u2019ve had a Hannah; you know?\u00a0 I think this is going to be a great movie, for a lot of reasons\u2014the story\u2014but also, and I told this to Bob, Jon, I just thought your production values and your shots really showed phenomenal excellence and honors God\u2014really, with quality that\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPeople aren\u2019t going to go to this and they aren\u2019t going to say\u2014and I\u2019ve used this phrase too many times here in the last couple of years\u2014but it\u2019s not a cheesy, Christian film.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 You can put it in there with the best of them.\u00a0 You guys made a great team, and you did a great job.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you for that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is one of those movies you can take your friends to, no matter who your friends are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jon:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You can take your kids, too.\u00a0 They\u2019re not going to be bored.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019re going to fall right in the middle of this, and they\u2019re going to identify with the emotions and the ebb and flow of what\u2019s taking place there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that we should say it\u2019s not geared toward younger children.\u00a0 You\u2019d want to take your adolescents, your teenagers, to go with you to see this movie.\u00a0 Again, if you\u2019d like more information about <em>October Baby<\/em>, go to our website, FamilyLifeToday.com;
