don\u2019t you think?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let\u2019s start digging.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, as I look back at the Scripture, one of the first commands in the Bible, \u201cBe fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And so the couple that says, \u201cWell, we\u2019ve looked at it.\u00a0 We don\u2019t think we\u2019d be good parents.\u201d\u00a0 In fact, that\u2019s one of the things a lot of couples today are saying, \u201cI don\u2019t know if we want to have kids because we\u2019re afraid of what kind of parents we\u2019re going to be, given the background we have.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Everybody\u2019s got the choice.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to place your faith in the right object of your faith.\u00a0 To me, I\u2019m going to err on the side of Scripture.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to err on the side of trusting that what God said, when He commanded us to be fruitful and multiply, that it is, as I\u2019ve found it, very redemptive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you would say the command to the man and the woman in Genesis 1 is a command that follows, not just to them, but goes to the rest of humanity\u2014to all of us; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t see an exception clause there in Genesis 1\u2014that it was just to Adam and Eve, in the Garden.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s a part of the church.\u00a0 I think we need to be talking more about how children are a blessing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are not bullish on children today.\u00a0 They represent the next generation of those who carry the light and who are salt to the next generation.\u00a0 If we don\u2019t multiply, then I promise you\u2014there\u2019s what?\u2014two billion, who are in the Muslim faith, who will carry their torch.\u00a0 I think Christians need to be the most fruitful, multiplying people on the planet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, I got him started here.\u00a0 So, now that we\u2019ve stirred it up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ll introduce our guests.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I will, in fact.\u00a0 They have written a book called <em>Start Your Family.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>Undoubtedly, they now have a different perspective of children, as well.\u00a0 Steve and Candice Watters join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Steve, Candice, welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks a lot.\u00a0 This is fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What\u2019s your attitude toward children today?\u00a0 You now have four.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 We have four.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You didn\u2019t start out with a positive attitude, Steve.\u00a0 You expressed you were all about, really, the balance sheet of the checkbook\u2014trying to figure out how you were going to pay for a family.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t start out bullish on children; did you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I didn\u2019t.\u00a0 I\u2019m glad you used that phrase because that\u2019s one I\u2019m using more these days.\u00a0 I realize I was in a bear market, you know; and I think a lot of my peers are in a bear market because you do the cost-benefit analysis, and it doesn\u2019t add up.\u00a0 You think about all the headaches, and the frustration, and all the things you see in the mall\u2014you know, haggard parents.\u00a0 It\u2019s not exciting to sign up for\u2014the way it\u2019s laid out to you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then you go to people in the church; and you say, \u201cWell, why should we do it?\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to find a parent, a pastor, somebody else out there, who will give you a great Christian reason other than, \u201cWell, that\u2019s what we did.\u201d\u00a0 Or you know, maybe they\u2019ll say, \u201cWell, the Bible says be fruitful; and it\u2019s a blessing,\u201d but they won\u2019t unpack it for you in light of all your financial questions, all of your fears, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014broken homes, and all those things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I said, as Bob was asking me the question, \u201c...children are redemptive.\u201d\u00a0 They redeem us from ourselves\u2014from a self-centered life.\u00a0 They call us to live our lives on behalf of a person who has profound dignity and has the image of God.\u00a0 Candice, how did your attitude toward children change?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 I started to realize that, as I became a parent, that God is a parent.\u00a0 I think we see God differently when we have our own children because we realize we are to God the way they are to us.\u00a0 We are a handful to God the way that children can be a handful to us.\u00a0 And yet, we are His dearly-loved children; and He calls us to be a conduit of that love, then, down to our children\u2014and that He can flow through us to them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey are my Great Commission.\u00a0 They are the ones that I want to share the good news of the Gospel with.\u00a0 They are\u2014really, children are the opportunity that most Christians have\u2014because most Christians eventually marry\u2014to take a part in a creative act, to be like God, to demonstrate that they were created in His image, and to create new life and then to pour themselves and their faith into those kids and evangelize them for the future.\u00a0 They are the hope for the next generation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They really are and I fear, Candice, that there\u2019s a generation of young couples, starting out their marriage\u2014that they\u2019re really back to the bull market again.\u00a0 I think they\u2019re really selling God short here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They don\u2019t realize the tremendous privilege that He\u2019s given parents\u2014and I love the way you put it\u2014that we have a chance, as a couple, to join with God in creating life.\u00a0 What an <em>unspeakable<\/em> privilege!\u00a0 I mean, I\u2019m looking at our family photo\u2014where once there were two people, there\u2019s now this wide-angle photograph of our family get-together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 Color-coded shirts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, oh, yes, you got it!\u00a0 It\u2019s all these human beings.\u00a0 It\u2019s now <em>28<\/em> human beings.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 For the Kingdom.\u00a0 You know, who understands that principle better than anyone is the Enemy of our souls. He doesn\u2019t want couples to have children and raise them up for God\u2019s glory.\u00a0 He wants couples to stay selfish and to stay focused only on them.\u00a0 That\u2019s not to say that a couple, who can\u2019t have children, can\u2019t be fruitful because God gives us the ability to be fruitful wherever He has us.\u00a0 He is sovereign. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut for the couple who is able to have children, who says, \u201cNo,\u201d to that, they are missing out on one of the best parts of being married.\u00a0 It is one of the main reasons God gave us marriage.\u00a0 We used to understand that\u2014even our marriage vows talked about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, they said that we were <em>ordained<\/em> in marriage for the procreation of children.\u00a0 You know, I think it\u2019s one of these things where there\u2019s a design flaw in current marriages.\u00a0 There was a period after the Industrial Revolution where marriage experts realized, \u201cWe\u2019re going to have to rethink the family here and rethink marriages.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey pitched this idea that marriage should really be about this companion\u2014a high, intense, emotional connection between this couple.\u00a0 \u201cLet\u2019s downplay those other aspects.\u201d\u00a0 Ever since then, we\u2019ve got this concept of the soul mate and, you know, your marriage should be about this person completing you and all these things.\u00a0 We\u2019ve lost this sense of how children <em>are<\/em> a part of the design and were <em>meant <\/em>to bring a new life and depth to the relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Mary Ann and I had friends who decided, early on in their marriage, that they were going to be a childless couple.\u00a0 In fact, the husband\u2014I think he was in his late 20s when he had a vasectomy so that they could make sure that they would be childless.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember talking with them about it; and she said to me, \u201cIf you knew the childhood I grew up in; if you knew the damage that had been a part of my childhood.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 She said, \u201cI don\u2019t have any frame of reference in terms of modeling; and I have such a level of emotional baggage in my own life, I\u2019m afraid of what kind of a mother I would be.\u201d\u00a0 If you were sitting down with a young woman who is 28 and going, \u201cI would just not handle children well.\u201d\u00a0 What would you tell her?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would start by saying God calls us to be fruitful, not fearful.\u00a0 That\u2019s the starting point.\u00a0 Once you embrace that and say, \u201cOkay, Lord, I\u2019m in this to do it Your way; but God, I need You to get me healthy.\u201d\u00a0 There are so many resources to help someone like that get to the point where she can be a good mom.\u00a0 I think God wants to redeem families, and He often redeems the parents through the children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He really does.\u00a0 That\u2019s a good word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 We saw that happen with a co-worker at <em>Focus on the Family<\/em>.\u00a0 He likes to tell the story.\u00a0 He draws this family tree between him and his girlfriend, who he got pregnant.\u00a0 He shows all these broken branches and these bad apples on this tree.\u00a0 He said, \u201cThis is what we brought together.\u00a0 When I found out she was pregnant, we went to the abortion clinic.\u00a0 They said, \u2018You just need to abort this baby.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod did something\u2014inspired them to keep this baby.\u00a0 As God started doing a redemptive work, they got married.\u00a0 They now have five kids, but the neatest thing is what God\u2019s done\u2014not only to start a new chapter in this new life\u2014but it went backwards.\u00a0 Now, there are branches on that tree that have been restored\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Parents and siblings\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014bad fruit that has been turned into good fruit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 The mending.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is not the end of the story.\u00a0 I mean, you look at the Bible; and so often, God is having to do a redemptive work in a family.\u00a0 He\u2019s not just looking for perfect families to commission His spiritual work around the world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We can get a good picture of our 28 human beings, if you take enough pictures; but the reality is, \u201cThey are all selfish, sinful broken people.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Works in progress.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They are works in process.\u00a0 When you started talking about the Bible, I was picking mine up.\u00a0 I was going, \u201cThat\u2019s what this Book is all about.\u00a0 It\u2019s about imperfect people; people who have failed.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 You talk about family dysfunction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes!\u00a0 I mean, from Genesis all the way to Revelation. It\u2019s all about God intercepting broken lives.\u00a0 I like the way you said it earlier; and if I might, I\u2019d add this to it, \u201cGod doesn\u2019t call us to fear.\u00a0 He calls us to faith.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe calls us to risk stepping out and trusting Him.\u00a0 To that woman, Bob, that you were describing\u2014I\u2019ve looked those women in the eye, and I\u2019ve looked some fathers in the eye, who are really terrified at the thought of bringing a child in and not knowing if they\u2019re capable of doing it.\u00a0 The Scriptures promise His power is perfected in what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 Weakness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Weakness; weakness.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to just sound trite here.\u00a0 I\u2019m not minimizing the fear, but I am trying to <em>maximize <\/em>the faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 The sad thing is that so often the faith is not what is carrying us\u2014that, so often, in the Christian body, the things that are forcing our decisions about children aren\u2019t God tugging at our hearts as much as it is our hearts being conformed more to the image of the culture around us, that doesn\u2019t like kids\u2014that sees kids as the threat.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 A consequence.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 The threat to all the things fun in life to the consequence that you want to avoid from your sexual pleasure.\u00a0 We just hope to call more people to reflect deeply\u2014to actually go back to God and say, \u201cGod, what is Your heart here?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you look at the Scriptures, God is not threatened by kids.\u00a0 It was Herod who was threatened by babies; it was Pharaoh who was threatened by babies.\u00a0 It\u2019s always our spiritual Enemy who is trying to create fear and antagonism towards babies.\u00a0 It\u2019s God who\u2019s using babies to bring new life to the world.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI read somewhere that there\u2019s no holy book that has more examples of specific details of babies as the Bible does.\u00a0 It points to the fact that, when God wants to do something new and hopeful in the world, He uses babies.\u00a0 The Enemy doesn\u2019t like that at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, and I have my Bible open to the page that reminds me of babies.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPsalm 127 has two footprints in it\u2014little ink footprints of my granddaughter, Molly, who lived seven days in the summer of 2008.\u00a0 You wouldn\u2019t believe the power of a little life of seven days.\u00a0 The reason I have it in Psalm 127 is it says, \u201cBehold, children are a heritage of the Lord; the fruit of the womb is a reward.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLater on in Psalm 128, the last verse in that chapter\u2014it says, \u201cMay you see your children\u2019s children.\u00a0 Peace be upon Israel.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen my children\u2019s children.\u00a0 I\u2019ve held my granddaughter, just hours before she died.\u00a0 I nicknamed her Mighty Molly because her life was mighty, even though short.\u00a0 Candice, when I opened my Bible and showed you that Scripture and the footprints, you began to cry.\u00a0 There\u2019s a reason for that; isn\u2019t there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just am stunned by the stories from moms who have had babies who haven\u2019t lived long and whom doctors said, \u201cYou need to end this pregnancy because your baby won\u2019t make it.\u201d Some of the babies did die in the womb and were stillborn; and yet, like Mighty Molly, they have changed lives.\u00a0 Some of these babies lived a couple of hours.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA friend of mine\u2014her daughter lived a couple of hours.\u00a0 She has ministered to <em>millions<\/em> of women through her story, and I\u2019m just amazed.\u00a0 God does not despise life <em>at<\/em> all.\u00a0 It\u2019s the Enemy who despises life in every form.\u00a0 A baby that lives seven days, or seven minutes, or 70 years\u2014God has an idea when that life is conceived, and He has a plan for that life\u2014no matter how short or how long.\u00a0 It is all for His glory.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of your four is in heaven?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of our five, yes.\u00a0 We had a baby in between our first and second.\u00a0 He would have been our second, Griffin George, and I had a miscarriage at 14 weeks.\u00a0 So many lessons learned through that.\u00a0 What\u2019s so neat is that we did a little baby book for him.\u00a0 We had the ultrasound pictures, and we named him, and wrote Scripture for him.\u00a0 Our kids talk about him; and they know they have a brother in heaven\u2014waiting to meet him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat a powerful thing for little kids to think, \u201cI need to get to heaven because I need to meet my brother.\u201d\u00a0 To God be the glory that they have an added incentive to be there for eternity.\u00a0 My prayer is that all these little ones, who are given life, even short lives, will challenge our abortion culture because they are making statements on behalf of all the babies who aren\u2019t given a chance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, they have no voice.\u00a0 I just want to speak to the couples who only have one child or two.\u00a0 It seems like the mantra of two and no more has been around now for three or four decades.\u00a0 I\u2019ve traveled overseas.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been to countries where they have a one-child policy.\u00a0 Let me tell you something.\u00a0 That\u2019s not what you want.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want a country of families that only have one child because it\u2019s within a family that you learn the art of relating to other selfish, sinful people.\u00a0 You learn the art of how to resolve conflict.\u00a0 You learn how to give.\u00a0 You learn how to share.\u00a0 You learn how to love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I would just encourage those who are listening to our broadcast, \u201cIt\u2019s not a matter of us dictating to you how many children you have.\u00a0 That would be arrogant, but it is a matter of challenging you to pray.\u201d\u00a0 Go to God, and say, \u201cGod, do we have the right number?\u00a0 Is this what You want us to have?\u201d\u00a0 Be open and be available to be obedient because children really are a blessing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are you trying to break the news to us?\u00a0 You and Barbara?\u2014\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 What did Abraham say?\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 If Barbara came in and announced that\u2014I don\u2019t know, man.\u00a0 It is like, \u201cWhoa!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, Dennis, when we had three children, I thought we were done.\u00a0 My plate felt full, and so we were talking about, \u201cMaybe we won\u2019t have any more.\u201d\u00a0 Then I got word from three different doctors that we were done because I was in premature ovarian failure.\u00a0 Having that imposed on me from someone else was a totally different experience.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had a deep grief and sadness, thinking at age 37, I couldn\u2019t have any more children.\u00a0 And suddenly I thought, \u201cI don\u2019t want to be done.\u00a0 I want more blessings.\u00a0 I want more of what God has for me.\u201d We told the kids we didn\u2019t think we could have any more, but we could certainly pray.\u00a0 We prayed and God, in His miraculous power, blessed us with another pregnancy.\u00a0 I found out I was pregnant just after I finished writing the window chapter of the book, where I talk about my window slamming shut.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo God be the glory, and for our kids\u2019 benefit, to see God at work and to do something so miraculous.\u00a0 It is one thing to think you\u2019re done and to make that call yourself, but you have to remember that your body will do that for you at some point.\u00a0 Are you really ready to turn it off before you have to? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s also a reminder for the women out there\u2014because we know the frustrating struggle of infertility\u2014and we see so many stories\u2014and our friends\u2014and we\u2019re reminded that God opens and closes the womb.\u00a0 That\u2019s hard to grapple with.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to understand His sovereignty; but as we experienced it, we know He is able and that we know that He can bring fruit from our lives\u2014spiritual fruitfulness, while we are trusting and believing.\u00a0 But know that He is also the same One Who says, \u201cHe puts the barren woman in her home as the happy mother of children,\u201d\u2014that He is able.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and as you were talking, Steve, I just thought of my life verse, which has the handprint of Mighty Molly.\u00a0 It\u2019s where I got the concept of her life being mighty.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPraise the Lord.\u00a0 Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in His commandments.\u00a0 His offspring will be mighty in the land.\u00a0 The generation of the upright will be blessed.\u201d\u00a0 Who wouldn\u2019t want to have that written on their tombstone?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, to have attempted to have walked with God, and <em>generally<\/em> been obedient, and then to have had the privilege of having a herd of children that He helped direct, and had the privilege of shaping their conscience and the spiritual direction of their lives, and letting them go, and letting God use them.\u00a0 What a privilege.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m just grateful to God for you two, Steve and Candice, for your work on this book.\u00a0 I think this really is a timely book.\u00a0 The subtitle is <em>Inspiration for Having Babies. <\/em>\u00a0I do think this is a generation that needs to be inspired.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You think there might be a baby boom out of this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 I hope so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is that what you\u2019re thinking?\u00a0 You\u2019re hoping? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ll take it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ll look back on this and they\u2019ll go, \u201cWhat happened back there that caused all those babies to be born?\u201d\u00a0 They will say, \u201cIt was when Steve and Candice were on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Nine months later, \u201cLook at what was happening!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 Praise God!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 We hope that.\u00a0 You know, it will be parents who have vision for it because I was surprised to hear, even in marriage, a third of pregnancies are unplanned.\u00a0 If nothing else, just to be able to go into family with vision, with preparation, so that when all the joys and challenges come your way, you\u2019re prepared, and you realize, \u201cGod wants me to do this.\u00a0 This is part of His plan, not only to how He\u2019s going to shape us, but what He\u2019s going to do in the world.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What a great way to end a kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I remember you looked at that and said, \u201cI don\u2019t think that\u2019s right.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You want to begin the broadcast on that controversial note?\u00a0 (Laughter) \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I thought we ought to just roll it out here; don\u2019t you think?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let\u2019s start digging.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, as I look back at the Scripture, one of the first commands in the Bible, \u201cBe fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And so the couple that says, \u201cWell, we\u2019ve looked at it.\u00a0 We don\u2019t think we\u2019d be good parents.\u201d\u00a0 In fact, that\u2019s one of the things a lot of couples today are saying, \u201cI don\u2019t know if we want to have kids because we\u2019re afraid of what kind of parents we\u2019re going to be, given the background we have.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Everybody\u2019s got the choice.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to place your faith in the right object of your faith.\u00a0 To me, I\u2019m going to err on the side of Scripture.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to err on the side of trusting that what God said, when He commanded us to be fruitful and multiply, that it is, as I\u2019ve found it, very redemptive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you would say the command to the man and the woman in Genesis 1 is a command that follows, not just to them, but goes to the rest of humanity\u2014to all of us; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t see an exception clause there in Genesis 1\u2014that it was just to Adam and Eve, in the Garden.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s a part of the church.\u00a0 I think we need to be talking more about how children are a blessing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are not bullish on children today.\u00a0 They represent the next generation of those who carry the light and who are salt to the next generation.\u00a0 If we don\u2019t multiply, then I promise you\u2014there\u2019s what?\u2014two billion, who are in the Muslim faith, who will carry their torch.\u00a0 I think Christians need to be the most fruitful, multiplying people on the planet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, I got him started here.\u00a0 So, now that we\u2019ve stirred it up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ll introduce our guests.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I will, in fact.\u00a0 They have written a book called <em>Start Your Family.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>Undoubtedly, they now have a different perspective of children, as well.\u00a0 Steve and Candice Watters join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Steve, Candice, welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks a lot.\u00a0 This is fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What\u2019s your attitude toward children today?\u00a0 You now have four.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 We have four.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You didn\u2019t start out with a positive attitude, Steve.\u00a0 You expressed you were all about, really, the balance sheet of the checkbook\u2014trying to figure out how you were going to pay for a family.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t start out bullish on children; did you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I didn\u2019t.\u00a0 I\u2019m glad you used that phrase because that\u2019s one I\u2019m using more these days.\u00a0 I realize I was in a bear market, you know; and I think a lot of my peers are in a bear market because you do the cost-benefit analysis, and it doesn\u2019t add up.\u00a0 You think about all the headaches, and the frustration, and all the things you see in the mall\u2014you know, haggard parents.\u00a0 It\u2019s not exciting to sign up for\u2014the way it\u2019s laid out to you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then you go to people in the church; and you say, \u201cWell, why should we do it?\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to find a parent, a pastor, somebody else out there, who will give you a great Christian reason other than, \u201cWell, that\u2019s what we did.\u201d\u00a0 Or you know, maybe they\u2019ll say, \u201cWell, the Bible says be fruitful; and it\u2019s a blessing,\u201d but they won\u2019t unpack it for you in light of all your financial questions, all of your fears, and\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014broken homes, and all those things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I said, as Bob was asking me the question, \u201c...children are redemptive.\u201d\u00a0 They redeem us from ourselves\u2014from a self-centered life.\u00a0 They call us to live our lives on behalf of a person who has profound dignity and has the image of God.\u00a0 Candice, how did your attitude toward children change?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 I started to realize that, as I became a parent, that God is a parent.\u00a0 I think we see God differently when we have our own children because we realize we are to God the way they are to us.\u00a0 We are a handful to God the way that children can be a handful to us.\u00a0 And yet, we are His dearly-loved children; and He calls us to be a conduit of that love, then, down to our children\u2014and that He can flow through us to them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey are my Great Commission.\u00a0 They are the ones that I want to share the good news of the Gospel with.\u00a0 They are\u2014really, children are the opportunity that most Christians have\u2014because most Christians eventually marry\u2014to take a part in a creative act, to be like God, to demonstrate that they were created in His image, and to create new life and then to pour themselves and their faith into those kids and evangelize them for the future.\u00a0 They are the hope for the next generation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They really are and I fear, Candice, that there\u2019s a generation of young couples, starting out their marriage\u2014that they\u2019re really back to the bull market again.\u00a0 I think they\u2019re really selling God short here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They don\u2019t realize the tremendous privilege that He\u2019s given parents\u2014and I love the way you put it\u2014that we have a chance, as a couple, to join with God in creating life.\u00a0 What an <em>unspeakable<\/em> privilege!\u00a0 I mean, I\u2019m looking at our family photo\u2014where once there were two people, there\u2019s now this wide-angle photograph of our family get-together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 Color-coded shirts.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, oh, yes, you got it!\u00a0 It\u2019s all these human beings.\u00a0 It\u2019s now <em>28<\/em> human beings.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 For the Kingdom.\u00a0 You know, who understands that principle better than anyone is the Enemy of our souls. He doesn\u2019t want couples to have children and raise them up for God\u2019s glory.\u00a0 He wants couples to stay selfish and to stay focused only on them.\u00a0 That\u2019s not to say that a couple, who can\u2019t have children, can\u2019t be fruitful because God gives us the ability to be fruitful wherever He has us.\u00a0 He is sovereign. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut for the couple who is able to have children, who says, \u201cNo,\u201d to that, they are missing out on one of the best parts of being married.\u00a0 It is one of the main reasons God gave us marriage.\u00a0 We used to understand that\u2014even our marriage vows talked about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, they said that we were <em>ordained<\/em> in marriage for the procreation of children.\u00a0 You know, I think it\u2019s one of these things where there\u2019s a design flaw in current marriages.\u00a0 There was a period after the Industrial Revolution where marriage experts realized, \u201cWe\u2019re going to have to rethink the family here and rethink marriages.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey pitched this idea that marriage should really be about this companion\u2014a high, intense, emotional connection between this couple.\u00a0 \u201cLet\u2019s downplay those other aspects.\u201d\u00a0 Ever since then, we\u2019ve got this concept of the soul mate and, you know, your marriage should be about this person completing you and all these things.\u00a0 We\u2019ve lost this sense of how children <em>are<\/em> a part of the design and were <em>meant <\/em>to bring a new life and depth to the relationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Mary Ann and I had friends who decided, early on in their marriage, that they were going to be a childless couple.\u00a0 In fact, the husband\u2014I think he was in his late 20s when he had a vasectomy so that they could make sure that they would be childless.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember talking with them about it; and she said to me, \u201cIf you knew the childhood I grew up in; if you knew the damage that had been a part of my childhood.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 She said, \u201cI don\u2019t have any frame of reference in terms of modeling; and I have such a level of emotional baggage in my own life, I\u2019m afraid of what kind of a mother I would be.\u201d\u00a0 If you were sitting down with a young woman who is 28 and going, \u201cI would just not handle children well.\u201d\u00a0 What would you tell her?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would start by saying God calls us to be fruitful, not fearful.\u00a0 That\u2019s the starting point.\u00a0 Once you embrace that and say, \u201cOkay, Lord, I\u2019m in this to do it Your way; but God, I need You to get me healthy.\u201d\u00a0 There are so many resources to help someone like that get to the point where she can be a good mom.\u00a0 I think God wants to redeem families, and He often redeems the parents through the children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He really does.\u00a0 That\u2019s a good word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 We saw that happen with a co-worker at <em>Focus on the Family<\/em>.\u00a0 He likes to tell the story.\u00a0 He draws this family tree between him and his girlfriend, who he got pregnant.\u00a0 He shows all these broken branches and these bad apples on this tree.\u00a0 He said, \u201cThis is what we brought together.\u00a0 When I found out she was pregnant, we went to the abortion clinic.\u00a0 They said, \u2018You just need to abort this baby.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod did something\u2014inspired them to keep this baby.\u00a0 As God started doing a redemptive work, they got married.\u00a0 They now have five kids, but the neatest thing is what God\u2019s done\u2014not only to start a new chapter in this new life\u2014but it went backwards.\u00a0 Now, there are branches on that tree that have been restored\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Parents and siblings\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014bad fruit that has been turned into good fruit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 The mending.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is not the end of the story.\u00a0 I mean, you look at the Bible; and so often, God is having to do a redemptive work in a family.\u00a0 He\u2019s not just looking for perfect families to commission His spiritual work around the world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We can get a good picture of our 28 human beings, if you take enough pictures; but the reality is, \u201cThey are all selfish, sinful broken people.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Works in progress.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They are works in process.\u00a0 When you started talking about the Bible, I was picking mine up.\u00a0 I was going, \u201cThat\u2019s what this Book is all about.\u00a0 It\u2019s about imperfect people; people who have failed.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 You talk about family dysfunction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes!\u00a0 I mean, from Genesis all the way to Revelation. It\u2019s all about God intercepting broken lives.\u00a0 I like the way you said it earlier; and if I might, I\u2019d add this to it, \u201cGod doesn\u2019t call us to fear.\u00a0 He calls us to faith.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe calls us to risk stepping out and trusting Him.\u00a0 To that woman, Bob, that you were describing\u2014I\u2019ve looked those women in the eye, and I\u2019ve looked some fathers in the eye, who are really terrified at the thought of bringing a child in and not knowing if they\u2019re capable of doing it.\u00a0 The Scriptures promise His power is perfected in what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 Weakness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Weakness; weakness.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to just sound trite here.\u00a0 I\u2019m not minimizing the fear, but I am trying to <em>maximize <\/em>the faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 The sad thing is that so often the faith is not what is carrying us\u2014that, so often, in the Christian body, the things that are forcing our decisions about children aren\u2019t God tugging at our hearts as much as it is our hearts being conformed more to the image of the culture around us, that doesn\u2019t like kids\u2014that sees kids as the threat.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 A consequence.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 The threat to all the things fun in life to the consequence that you want to avoid from your sexual pleasure.\u00a0 We just hope to call more people to reflect deeply\u2014to actually go back to God and say, \u201cGod, what is Your heart here?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you look at the Scriptures, God is not threatened by kids.\u00a0 It was Herod who was threatened by babies; it was Pharaoh who was threatened by babies.\u00a0 It\u2019s always our spiritual Enemy who is trying to create fear and antagonism towards babies.\u00a0 It\u2019s God who\u2019s using babies to bring new life to the world.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI read somewhere that there\u2019s no holy book that has more examples of specific details of babies as the Bible does.\u00a0 It points to the fact that, when God wants to do something new and hopeful in the world, He uses babies.\u00a0 The Enemy doesn\u2019t like that at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, and I have my Bible open to the page that reminds me of babies.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPsalm 127 has two footprints in it\u2014little ink footprints of my granddaughter, Molly, who lived seven days in the summer of 2008.\u00a0 You wouldn\u2019t believe the power of a little life of seven days.\u00a0 The reason I have it in Psalm 127 is it says, \u201cBehold, children are a heritage of the Lord; the fruit of the womb is a reward.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLater on in Psalm 128, the last verse in that chapter\u2014it says, \u201cMay you see your children\u2019s children.\u00a0 Peace be upon Israel.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen my children\u2019s children.\u00a0 I\u2019ve held my granddaughter, just hours before she died.\u00a0 I nicknamed her Mighty Molly because her life was mighty, even though short.\u00a0 Candice, when I opened my Bible and showed you that Scripture and the footprints, you began to cry.\u00a0 There\u2019s a reason for that; isn\u2019t there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just am stunned by the stories from moms who have had babies who haven\u2019t lived long and whom doctors said, \u201cYou need to end this pregnancy because your baby won\u2019t make it.\u201d Some of the babies did die in the womb and were stillborn; and yet, like Mighty Molly, they have changed lives.\u00a0 Some of these babies lived a couple of hours.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA friend of mine\u2014her daughter lived a couple of hours.\u00a0 She has ministered to <em>millions<\/em> of women through her story, and I\u2019m just amazed.\u00a0 God does not despise life <em>at<\/em> all.\u00a0 It\u2019s the Enemy who despises life in every form.\u00a0 A baby that lives seven days, or seven minutes, or 70 years\u2014God has an idea when that life is conceived, and He has a plan for that life\u2014no matter how short or how long.\u00a0 It is all for His glory.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of your four is in heaven?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of our five, yes.\u00a0 We had a baby in between our first and second.\u00a0 He would have been our second, Griffin George, and I had a miscarriage at 14 weeks.\u00a0 So many lessons learned through that.\u00a0 What\u2019s so neat is that we did a little baby book for him.\u00a0 We had the ultrasound pictures, and we named him, and wrote Scripture for him.\u00a0 Our kids talk about him; and they know they have a brother in heaven\u2014waiting to meet him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat a powerful thing for little kids to think, \u201cI need to get to heaven because I need to meet my brother.\u201d\u00a0 To God be the glory that they have an added incentive to be there for eternity.\u00a0 My prayer is that all these little ones, who are given life, even short lives, will challenge our abortion culture because they are making statements on behalf of all the babies who aren\u2019t given a chance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, they have no voice.\u00a0 I just want to speak to the couples who only have one child or two.\u00a0 It seems like the mantra of two and no more has been around now for three or four decades.\u00a0 I\u2019ve traveled overseas.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been to countries where they have a one-child policy.\u00a0 Let me tell you something.\u00a0 That\u2019s not what you want.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want a country of families that only have one child because it\u2019s within a family that you learn the art of relating to other selfish, sinful people.\u00a0 You learn the art of how to resolve conflict.\u00a0 You learn how to give.\u00a0 You learn how to share.\u00a0 You learn how to love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I would just encourage those who are listening to our broadcast, \u201cIt\u2019s not a matter of us dictating to you how many children you have.\u00a0 That would be arrogant, but it is a matter of challenging you to pray.\u201d\u00a0 Go to God, and say, \u201cGod, do we have the right number?\u00a0 Is this what You want us to have?\u201d\u00a0 Be open and be available to be obedient because children really are a blessing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are you trying to break the news to us?\u00a0 You and Barbara?\u2014\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 What did Abraham say?\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 If Barbara came in and announced that\u2014I don\u2019t know, man.\u00a0 It is like, \u201cWhoa!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, Dennis, when we had three children, I thought we were done.\u00a0 My plate felt full, and so we were talking about, \u201cMaybe we won\u2019t have any more.\u201d\u00a0 Then I got word from three different doctors that we were done because I was in premature ovarian failure.\u00a0 Having that imposed on me from someone else was a totally different experience.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had a deep grief and sadness, thinking at age 37, I couldn\u2019t have any more children.\u00a0 And suddenly I thought, \u201cI don\u2019t want to be done.\u00a0 I want more blessings.\u00a0 I want more of what God has for me.\u201d We told the kids we didn\u2019t think we could have any more, but we could certainly pray.\u00a0 We prayed and God, in His miraculous power, blessed us with another pregnancy.\u00a0 I found out I was pregnant just after I finished writing the window chapter of the book, where I talk about my window slamming shut.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo God be the glory, and for our kids\u2019 benefit, to see God at work and to do something so miraculous.\u00a0 It is one thing to think you\u2019re done and to make that call yourself, but you have to remember that your body will do that for you at some point.\u00a0 Are you really ready to turn it off before you have to? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s also a reminder for the women out there\u2014because we know the frustrating struggle of infertility\u2014and we see so many stories\u2014and our friends\u2014and we\u2019re reminded that God opens and closes the womb.\u00a0 That\u2019s hard to grapple with.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to understand His sovereignty; but as we experienced it, we know He is able and that we know that He can bring fruit from our lives\u2014spiritual fruitfulness, while we are trusting and believing.\u00a0 But know that He is also the same One Who says, \u201cHe puts the barren woman in her home as the happy mother of children,\u201d\u2014that He is able.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and as you were talking, Steve, I just thought of my life verse, which has the handprint of Mighty Molly.\u00a0 It\u2019s where I got the concept of her life being mighty.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPraise the Lord.\u00a0 Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in His commandments.\u00a0 His offspring will be mighty in the land.\u00a0 The generation of the upright will be blessed.\u201d\u00a0 Who wouldn\u2019t want to have that written on their tombstone?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, to have attempted to have walked with God, and <em>generally<\/em> been obedient, and then to have had the privilege of having a herd of children that He helped direct, and had the privilege of shaping their conscience and the spiritual direction of their lives, and letting them go, and letting God use them.\u00a0 What a privilege.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m just grateful to God for you two, Steve and Candice, for your work on this book.\u00a0 I think this really is a timely book.\u00a0 The subtitle is <em>Inspiration for Having Babies. <\/em>\u00a0I do think this is a generation that needs to be inspired.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You think there might be a baby boom out of this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 I hope so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is that what you\u2019re thinking?\u00a0 You\u2019re hoping? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ll take it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ll look back on this and they\u2019ll go, \u201cWhat happened back there that caused all those babies to be born?\u201d\u00a0 They will say, \u201cIt was when Steve and Candice were on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Nine months later, \u201cLook at what was happening!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Candice:<\/strong>\u00a0 Praise God!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steve:<\/strong>\u00a0 We hope that.\u00a0 You know, it will be parents who have vision for it because I was surprised to hear, even in marriage, a third of pregnancies are unplanned.\u00a0 If nothing else, just to be able to go into family with vision, with preparation, so that when all the joys and challenges come your way, you\u2019re prepared, and you realize, \u201cGod wants me to do this.\u00a0 This is part of His plan, not only to how He\u2019s going to shape us, but what He\u2019s going to do in the world.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What a great way to end a
