When Chris Beall confessed to his wife, Cindy, his pattern of sexual sin and adultery, their pastor came alongside them and told them that if their marriage was going to be restored, the church was going to need to be actively involved in helping them through the process.\u00a0 So, the following Sunday, during the service, their pastor told the congregation of what had been going on in Chris and Cindy\u2019s marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 He had this moment that, frankly, has changed our entire church.\u00a0 He stood before those people and said, \u201cThe American church is the only institution on the planet that shoot their wounded, and we will not do that.\u00a0 We, as the body of Christ, will be the hospital within which they\u2019ll heal.\u201d\u00a0 He spoke, I believe, prophetically over our marriage and said that God was going to make our marriage better than new.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 They did not give up on us.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t kick us to the curb, and I just have such <em>love<\/em> for people who were there with us, who were like, \u201cWe can do this, Cindy.\u201d\u00a0 It was like, \u201cDon\u2019t give up!\u00a0 Let\u2019s keep going.\u00a0 Keep at our <em>Weekend to Remember<\/em>\u00ae marriage getaways or at ministry events we\u2019ve been to here, on <em>FamilyLife Today\u2014<\/em>in e-mail\u2014lots of conversations with couples who have gotten to a place in their marriage, where they just go, \u201cI don\u2019t think there is a way back from here.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe story we\u2019re hearing this week is one of those stories that a lot of couples would look at and say, \u201cThis is a cut-and-run kind of story.\u201d\u00a0 Yet, that\u2019s not what the couple we\u2019re talking to chose to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, and I\u2019m glad they didn\u2019t for a lot of reasons.\u00a0 Chris and Cindy Beall join us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Chris, Cindy, welcome back.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks so much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is great to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Cindy has shared a story of how trust was really broken in their marriage due to Chris\u2019s infidelity and, really, a long-term porn addiction that went back to when you were eight years old, and has written about it in a book called <em>Healing Your Marriage When Trust Is Broken<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, as you look at your story\u2014I mean, you\u2019re in the limelight of a church; you were in ministry; people from the outside would\u2019ve looked at your marriage and thought everything was going okay, but inside\u2014your marriage was rotting.\u00a0 In February of 2002, the wound was lanced, and you confessed an affair\u2014multiple affairs, actually\u2014over a number of years that ultimately resulted in the pregnancy in one of those situations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Chris, your confession that day to Cindy, as you said, you knew that your time in ministry was done\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and that quite possibly, maybe even likely, your marriage was done.\u00a0 What were the next few days like because everything had just changed in your world, in your whole life?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 I was utterly broken.\u00a0 The two worlds that I worked so hard to keep separate were all now thrown in a blender.\u00a0 That\u2019s a really, really scary place to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust the thinking through what my lifestyle and my choices had done to the name of Christ\u2014like to the students I ministered to, who would later find out about the truth of what I had done\u2014it broke my heart.\u00a0 What I had done to Cindy and the reality that I am going to have to have conversations with three little boys, when they get to the right age.\u00a0 All of those things were kind of flooding in as the consequences of my choice, and I was just broken.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was praying for Cindy for clarity, for God to speak to her.\u00a0 There are probably people that say, \u201cIf you <em>knew<\/em> confessing would cause the end of a marriage, why would you do that?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve been asked that question often; and the truth is, for me, I was a prisoner, who happened to live in the same house as my wife and my sons.\u00a0 I was not free to be the husband and the father, the <em>man<\/em> that God had created me to be in that home.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes, confessing and putting this incredible burden on her shoulders, while completely unfair to her, because she didn\u2019t deserve it, in my opinion, was the one thing God wanted me to do because I have nothing to offer unless I\u2019m free\u2014unless I am a man that is living out the life of grace in Christ, I\u2019ve got nothing to offer as a husband and a father.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Cindy, you had gotten counsel not to do anything quick, rash.\u00a0 The thought was in your mind, \u201cHe\u2019s been unfaithful.\u00a0 The Bible says, \u2018In the case of adultery\u2019\u2014maybe, this is the time to end the marriage.\u201d\u00a0 You didn\u2019t act on that right away.\u00a0 In those next couple of days\u2014and you were getting counsel from your church.\u00a0 I mean, they just hired you.\u00a0 Here you were the new guy in the church.\u00a0 They had to make an announcement about why Chris is no longer on staff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell us about what you were thinking and what was going on over those first few days after the news came to you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I <em>did<\/em> think about divorce.\u00a0 That was really the first thing that came to my mind because, \u201cHow in the world do you get through <em>that<\/em>?\u201d\u00a0 I mean, you\u2014we\u2019d gone through plenty of things in marriage, and been annoyed with each other, and had to deal with things, and those are fine.\u00a0 That\u2019s, \u201cfor better or for worse\u201d; \u201cbut <em>this<\/em> kind of trumps those vows,\u201d is what I was thinking.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, \u201cI better just get out before he does this again because once a cheater, always a cheater.\u00a0 It\u2019s never going to change.\u201d\u00a0 A very wise pastor on our staff just said, \u201cYou don\u2019t have to decide all of that today.\u201d\u00a0 It just kind of set me at ease.\u00a0 I just said, \u201cOkay, you\u2019re right.\u00a0 So, what if I don\u2019t decide for three months to divorce him?\u00a0 It\u2019s just three more months\u2014whatever.\u00a0 In the big scheme of things, it\u2019s not a big deal.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I just kind of waited, and listened, and cried, and tried to figure out\u2014there were so many things we had to deal with.\u00a0 The practical thing, we had to go to the Health Department and get tested for diseases.\u00a0 I mean, just so many things that people may not get unless they are there, you know.\u00a0 So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you ask him to leave the house?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did not.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t know anybody.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know what to do, and I\u2019m kind of one of those financial nerds.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWell, we can\u2019t afford for him to go stay in a hotel; and I\u2019m surely not sending him to a hotel\u2014he\u2019s going to cheat again.\u201d\u00a0 There were all these things.\u00a0 So, we just stayed there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what made it possible for me to stay in the same home with him was he was broken.\u00a0 He was <em>completely<\/em> <em>devastated<\/em> by what he\u2019d done to the name of Jesus and to our family.\u00a0 He was not like, \u201cYou need to get over this.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry it happened, but if you\u2019d have been a better wife\u2014\u201d\u00a0 There was nothing like that.\u00a0 He just sat there and would just weep for <em>hours<\/em> over what he\u2019d done.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m a compassionate person, and I felt compassion for him.\u00a0 In the middle of <em>my pain<\/em>, I felt compassion because I just couldn\u2019t imagine hurting someone that bad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The church had to pretty quickly decide, \u201cWhat are we going to say next Sunday?\u201d and they had to decide it, with your approval, about what was going to be disclosed.\u00a0 Tell me about that conversation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Craig was very passionate that the church needed to know the truth, and he asked our permission.\u00a0 We gave it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, wait\u2014the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Pretty much; pretty much.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s kind of like, \u201cWe\u2019re going to tell the whole world what\u2019s going on in your home.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 The reason why\u2014he stood in front of the church, which was a pretty good number of people, and said that gossip kills churches; and if we all know the truth in love, there is nothing to gossip about.\u00a0 He proceeded to, in a very respectful way\u2014including sharing his feelings about what I had done\u2014shared the reason for my resignation.\u00a0 It was heartfelt.\u00a0 He was disappointed, and there wasn\u2019t a ton of room for speculation.\u00a0 People pretty much got what I had done and why I had disqualified myself from ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, he had this moment that, frankly, has changed our entire church.\u00a0 He stood before those people and said, \u201cThe American church is the only institution on the planet that shoots their wounded, and we will not do that.\u00a0 We, as the body of Christ, will be the hospital within which they\u2019ll heal.\u201d\u00a0 They applauded.\u00a0 The next week, we walked through that lobby and sat down in a pew.\u00a0 We were <em>petrified<\/em> because, you know, \u201cWhat are these people going to <em>think<\/em> about me and about <em>us<\/em>?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe sat down, and we were just crying.\u00a0 He stood on stage, and he said that Chris and Cindy are with us today and that he believed that God was going to do something very, very special.\u00a0 They gave us a standing ovation; and for the next couple of years, we just were normal people.\u00a0 They\u2014the body of Christ\u2014what God did through the body of Christ <em>changed us<\/em>.\u00a0 All of a sudden, honesty in the body of Christ is now a beautiful thing.\u00a0 It\u2019s not something to be avoided.\u00a0 It\u2019s something to be <em>embraced<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Cindy, you\u2019re reliving the moment; I can tell.\u00a0 What did people say to you, and what were you feeling as they said it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 They just loved us, (tearfully) and I was scared to death to go to church that day.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know what they were going to do, and I just cried all the way through it.\u00a0 People just\u2014I love our church.\u00a0 When I think about the people who were there that day, I just think, \u201cGosh, they did not give up on us.\u00a0 They did not kick us to the curb.\u201d\u00a0 I just have such <em>love<\/em> for people who were there with us.\u00a0 So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How important was that love?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how we would have made it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 For you choosing to stay, especially.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I am sure there were some people who thought, \u201cShe\u2019s crazy if she stays;\u201d but there were more people who were like, \u201cWe can do this, Cindy.\u201d\u00a0 It was like they were doing it with us; and it was more like, \u201cDon\u2019t give up!\u00a0 Let\u2019s keep going.\u00a0 Keep fighting.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you have a best friend in the church?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, we were there\u2014I had only lived in the town for ten days.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would say, though, the one couple that\u2014he was on staff.\u00a0 He was one of the pastors\u2014he and his wife had gone through something similar years and years prior.\u00a0 They felt uniquely called to walk us through every moment of the next few years.\u00a0 For the first month\u2014and I\u2019m not exaggerating\u201430 days, every night, they were on our living room floor, every night.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sometimes, we\u2019d just cry together.\u00a0 Sometimes, we\u2019d talk.\u00a0 Sometimes, they\u2019d speak words of encouragement and of counsel; but the covering of support was <em>overwhelming.<\/em>\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re out of work now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 I am out of work.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, where\u2019d you get a job?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, they were very specific on the things they were going to allow me and not allow me to do.\u00a0 Granted\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You say, \u201cThey.\u201d\u00a0 Who are \u201cthey\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 The elders and the leadership of the church.\u00a0 They basically took us on, under their care.\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m not on staff anymore; but they felt an obligation, a calling, to walk us through the next few months and years.\u00a0 So, step one was\u2014they ripped the computer out of our house.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStep two was\u2014they would not allow me to take a job that they didn\u2019t approve of, which means I couldn\u2019t travel, couldn\u2019t be with a woman, couldn\u2019t have a computer\u2014which pretty much limited the options to Home Depot\u00ae, where I was a manager, selling two-by-fours to smelly contractors for the next couple of years.\u00a0 It was amazing.\u00a0 It was a great\u2014life was simple.\u00a0 You step out of ministry, and you\u2019ve got these guys that are just fighting for you.\u00a0 There\u2019s tough conversations and practical love.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, for the next two years, I sold two-by-fours, and God had really spoken some things into Cindy\u2019s heart about whether or not she should stay.\u00a0 That started a pretty amazing, amazing healing journey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In the midst of this\u2014what had been your practice, your pattern, for more than a decade\u2014just went away?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 It did.\u00a0 I was\u2014I believe that today I wouldn\u2019t say that I\u2019m fixed.\u00a0 I\u2019m just as capable of being tempted\u2014under the right conditions, falling into the same struggle that I was in 12 years ago; but I am free.\u00a0 The bondage, the strongholds of that sin, through confession, through prayer, and through the power of God\u2014He has broken\u2014God has broken those chains.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Cindy, I\u2019ve got a tough question for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How long did it take him to restore trust with you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s still restoring it today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Good answer.\u00a0 No, really, good answer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s the truth.\u00a0 My\u2014ultimately, my trust is in my Heavenly Father.\u00a0 He is the only One who will never let me down.\u00a0 My husband will let me down again\u2014my mother, my friends.\u00a0 People are people.\u00a0 They\u2019ll do that, but every day he works at it.\u00a0 He told me right after I came home and said, \u201cI\u2019m going to stay.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI know you\u2019ll never trust me again; but if you\u2019ll give me the chance, I\u2019ll spend the rest of my life trying.\u201d\u00a0 That is exactly what he has done.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNothing is off limits to me.\u00a0 Nothing in his life is off limits, and he works hard every day to restore it.\u00a0 It\u2019s become like second nature to him.\u00a0 It\u2019s his\u2014just like breathing, he\u2019s restoring trust.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m going to breathe today.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to restore some trust today.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How?\u00a0 How is he doing that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 He calls me every time he leaves the office to let me know he\u2019s coming home.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t travel alone.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t meet with women by himself.\u00a0 He\u2014the other night he was working late at church, and he had one of his staff call me.\u00a0 He said, \u201cHey, what\u2019s up?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat are you calling me for?\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s like, \u201cHey, I just wanted you to know Chris will be probably leaving in the next 20 minutes.\u00a0 I just wanted to give you a heads up.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been working really hard.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s just\u2014he goes above and beyond to make sure that the Enemy cannot mess with my mind; and he works <em>so hard<\/em> to just earn that trust back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve got a computer back in your house; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 We do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How do you keep from going there?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Fort Knox.\u00a0 Every electronic device is completely monitored and locked down.\u00a0 I could get into all the minute details; but we use accountability software on every phone, every computer.\u00a0 We also use a filtering service on our entire wireless network because I\u2019m not just thinking about me\u2014I\u2019m thinking about my boys.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want one accidental click to open that world of darkness for them either.\u00a0 There is not one electronic device that we own that isn\u2019t ridiculously locked down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Speaking of your boys, you have two boys who live with you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have a third son, the one that we\u2019ve talked about, who was born to one of the women that you were involved with.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 As it turns out, you\u2019ve continued to have a relationship with her and with the boy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is where the story gets almost unbelievable.\u00a0 We met to talk about support years and years ago; and Cindy went and hugged her.\u00a0 I got to meet him for the very first time, and he\u2019s beautiful.\u00a0 She apologized to Cindy and told her that she knew that I was married, and Cindy just held her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would say most of the interaction happens between Cindy and her, not me and her.\u00a0 He comes and spends the summers with us, and he is with us at the holidays.\u00a0 They all know they\u2019re each other\u2019s brother.\u00a0 They\u2019ve all, in an age-appropriate way, have been explained to, by me, how this has all happened.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I look at him or think of him, he is no longer\u2014in the early days, it was like we\u2019re going to have this constant reminder for the rest of our lives of my sin.\u00a0 The Bible says that, \u201cGod will cause all things\u201d\u2014not some things, not just the good things, but \u201cHe\u2019ll cause all things to work together for good for those that love Him and are called according to His purpose.\u201d\u00a0 That little boy is that Scripture personified.\u00a0 He is no longer a reminder of my sin, but he is a reminder of the redemption of a good God that loves us and wants to take our <em>junk<\/em> and make it beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How did you do that, Cindy?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 A little word called surrender.\u00a0 I just\u2014I took God at His Word\u2014that He says, \u201cHe\u2019ll work all things for good for those who love Him.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, I love You. Well, okay, that includes you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI decided a long time ago, when I surrendered my life to Him, that my life was not my own; and I remember I was making spaghetti\u2014it was probably two weeks after his confession, and I just remember crying.\u00a0 I just\u2014the Father just said, \u201cDo you remember when you would always tell Me you\u2019ll go through anything to bring Me glory?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cYes.\u00a0 Yes, I remember; I remember that.\u201d\u00a0 I just felt Him say, \u201cThis is part of that, and I\u2019m going to use this in My time to bring glory to My name and draw <em>men to Me<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cOh, could we have done this a different route?\u201d\u00a0 Nonetheless, this is the route that we\u2019re on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just kind of pulling back, looking at your story.\u00a0 There really has been a very clear theme, Cindy, that you have modeled in this.\u00a0 Surrender to Christ is really how you build a marriage.\u00a0 Surrender to Christ is how you handle it when there is failure in a marriage, and surrender to Christ is how you fight for your marriage to go the distance.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I want\u2014I want our listeners to take out of this, by way of application, \u201cYour marriage and your family are worth fighting for.\u201d\u00a0 You can pitch it and flush it.\u00a0 It\u2019s far more difficult to do what you two have done\u2014face the humiliation, the shame, the rebuilding, the brokenness of that; but our listeners have heard, \u201cThere is life!\u00a0 There is life!\u201d\u00a0 In that surrender, there is life in that brokenness.\u00a0 There is freedom from the prison.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just applaud you guys for telling your story and really giving hope to other people.\u00a0 One last thought.\u00a0 There are those, who are listening to us right now, who have failed in their marriage; and they need to hear an unmistakable message from the couple who came and were in your living room for the first month\u2014the first months repeatedly.\u00a0 There\u2019s a passage in 2 Corinthians 1 that says, \u201cComfort others with the comfort with which you\u2019ve been comforted.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe tend to think of that just around grief, around losing someone, or going through an illness\u2014it\u2019s not just that.\u00a0 It\u2019s the comfort we receive when we fail\u2014that someone comes alongside us and cheers us on.\u00a0 There is a real ministry there.\u00a0 You\u2019re bringing comfort to other people.\u00a0 I just appreciate you being with us on the broadcast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 confessed to his wife, Cindy, his pattern of sexual sin and adultery, their pastor came alongside them and told them that if their marriage was going to be restored, the church was going to need to be actively involved in helping them through the process.\u00a0 So, the following Sunday, during the service, their pastor told the congregation of what had been going on in Chris and Cindy\u2019s marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 He had this moment that, frankly, has changed our entire church.\u00a0 He stood before those people and said, \u201cThe American church is the only institution on the planet that shoot their wounded, and we will not do that.\u00a0 We, as the body of Christ, will be the hospital within which they\u2019ll heal.\u201d\u00a0 He spoke, I believe, prophetically over our marriage and said that God was going to make our marriage better than new.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 They did not give up on us.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t kick us to the curb, and I just have such <em>love<\/em> for people who were there with us, who were like, \u201cWe can do this, Cindy.\u201d\u00a0 It was like, \u201cDon\u2019t give up!\u00a0 Let\u2019s keep going.\u00a0 Keep do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, and I\u2019m glad they didn\u2019t for a lot of reasons.\u00a0 Chris and Cindy Beall join us again on <em>FamilyLife much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is great to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Cindy has shared a story of how trust was really broken in their marriage due to Chris\u2019s infidelity and, really, a long-term porn addiction that went back to when you were eight years old, and has written about it in a book called <em>Healing Your Marriage When Trust Is Broken<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, as you look at your story\u2014I mean, you\u2019re in the limelight of a church; you were in ministry; people from the outside would\u2019ve looked at your marriage and thought everything was going okay, but inside\u2014your marriage was rotting.\u00a0 In February of 2002, the wound was lanced, and you confessed an affair\u2014multiple affairs, actually\u2014over a number of years that ultimately resulted in the pregnancy in one of those situations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Chris, your confession that day to Cindy, as you said, you knew that your time in ministry was done\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and that quite possibly, maybe even likely, your marriage was done.\u00a0 What were the next few days like because everything had just changed in your world, in your whole life?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 I was utterly broken.\u00a0 The two worlds that I worked so hard to keep separate were all now thrown in a blender.\u00a0 That\u2019s a really, really scary place to be. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust the thinking through what my lifestyle and my choices had done to the name of Christ\u2014like to the students I ministered to, who would later find out about the truth of what I had done\u2014it broke my heart.\u00a0 What I had done to Cindy and the reality that I am going to have to have conversations with three little boys, when they get to the right age.\u00a0 All of those things were kind of flooding in as the consequences of my choice, and I was just broken.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was praying for Cindy for clarity, for God to speak to her.\u00a0 There are probably people that say, \u201cIf you <em>knew<\/em> confessing would cause the end of a marriage, why would you do that?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ve been asked that question often; and the truth is, for me, I was a prisoner, who happened to live in the same house as my wife and my sons.\u00a0 I was not free to be the husband and the father, the <em>man<\/em> that God had created me to be in that home.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes, confessing and putting this incredible burden on her shoulders, while completely unfair to her, because she didn\u2019t deserve it, in my opinion, was the one thing God wanted me to do because I have nothing to offer unless I\u2019m free\u2014unless I am a man that is living out the life of grace in Christ, I\u2019ve got nothing to offer as a husband and a father.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Cindy, you had gotten counsel not to do anything quick, rash.\u00a0 The thought was in your mind, \u201cHe\u2019s been unfaithful.\u00a0 The Bible says, \u2018In the case of adultery\u2019\u2014maybe, this is the time to end the marriage.\u201d\u00a0 You didn\u2019t act on that right away.\u00a0 In those next couple of days\u2014and you were getting counsel from your church.\u00a0 I mean, they just hired you.\u00a0 Here you were the new guy in the church.\u00a0 They had to make an announcement about why Chris is no longer on staff.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell us about what you were thinking and what was going on over those first few days after the news came to you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I <em>did<\/em> think about divorce.\u00a0 That was really the first thing that came to my mind because, \u201cHow in the world do you get through <em>that<\/em>?\u201d\u00a0 I mean, you\u2014we\u2019d gone through plenty of things in marriage, and been annoyed with each other, and had to deal with things, and those are fine.\u00a0 That\u2019s, \u201cfor better or for worse\u201d; \u201cbut <em>this<\/em> kind of trumps those vows,\u201d is what I was thinking.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, \u201cI better just get out before he does this again because once a cheater, always a cheater.\u00a0 It\u2019s never going to change.\u201d\u00a0 A very wise pastor on our staff just said, \u201cYou don\u2019t have to decide all of that today.\u201d\u00a0 It just kind of set me at ease.\u00a0 I just said, \u201cOkay, you\u2019re right.\u00a0 So, what if I don\u2019t decide for three months to divorce him?\u00a0 It\u2019s just three more months\u2014whatever.\u00a0 In the big scheme of things, it\u2019s not a big deal.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I just kind of waited, and listened, and cried, and tried to figure out\u2014there were so many things we had to deal with.\u00a0 The practical thing, we had to go to the Health Department and get tested for diseases.\u00a0 I mean, just so many things that people may not get unless they are there, you know.\u00a0 So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you ask him to leave the house?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did not.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t know anybody.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know what to do, and I\u2019m kind of one of those financial nerds.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWell, we can\u2019t afford for him to go stay in a hotel; and I\u2019m surely not sending him to a hotel\u2014he\u2019s going to cheat again.\u201d\u00a0 There were all these things.\u00a0 So, we just stayed there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what made it possible for me to stay in the same home with him was he was broken.\u00a0 He was <em>completely<\/em> <em>devastated<\/em> by what he\u2019d done to the name of Jesus and to our family.\u00a0 He was not like, \u201cYou need to get over this.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry it happened, but if you\u2019d have been a better wife\u2014\u201d\u00a0 There was nothing like that.\u00a0 He just sat there and would just weep for <em>hours<\/em> over what he\u2019d done.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m a compassionate person, and I felt compassion for him.\u00a0 In the middle of <em>my pain<\/em>, I felt compassion because I just couldn\u2019t imagine hurting someone that bad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The church had to pretty quickly decide, \u201cWhat are we going to say next Sunday?\u201d and they had to decide it, with your approval, about what was going to be disclosed.\u00a0 Tell me about that conversation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Craig was very passionate that the church needed to know the truth, and he asked our permission.\u00a0 We gave it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, wait\u2014the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Pretty much; pretty much.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s kind of like, \u201cWe\u2019re going to tell the whole world what\u2019s going on in your home.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 The reason why\u2014he stood in front of the church, which was a pretty good number of people, and said that gossip kills churches; and if we all know the truth in love, there is nothing to gossip about.\u00a0 He proceeded to, in a very respectful way\u2014including sharing his feelings about what I had done\u2014shared the reason for my resignation.\u00a0 It was heartfelt.\u00a0 He was disappointed, and there wasn\u2019t a ton of room for speculation.\u00a0 People pretty much got what I had done and why I had disqualified myself from ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, he had this moment that, frankly, has changed our entire church.\u00a0 He stood before those people and said, \u201cThe American church is the only institution on the planet that shoots their wounded, and we will not do that.\u00a0 We, as the body of Christ, will be the hospital within which they\u2019ll heal.\u201d\u00a0 They applauded.\u00a0 The next week, we walked through that lobby and sat down in a pew.\u00a0 We were <em>petrified<\/em> because, you know, \u201cWhat are these people going to <em>think<\/em> about me and about <em>us<\/em>?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe sat down, and we were just crying.\u00a0 He stood on stage, and he said that Chris and Cindy are with us today and that he believed that God was going to do something very, very special.\u00a0 They gave us a standing ovation; and for the next couple of years, we just were normal people.\u00a0 They\u2014the body of Christ\u2014what God did through the body of Christ <em>changed us<\/em>.\u00a0 All of a sudden, honesty in the body of Christ is now a beautiful thing.\u00a0 It\u2019s not something to be avoided.\u00a0 It\u2019s something to be <em>embraced<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Cindy, you\u2019re reliving the moment; I can tell.\u00a0 What did people say to you, and what were you feeling as they said it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 They just loved us, (tearfully) and I was scared to death to go to church that day.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know what they were going to do, and I just cried all the way through it.\u00a0 People just\u2014I love our church.\u00a0 When I think about the people who were there that day, I just think, \u201cGosh, they did not give up on us.\u00a0 They did not kick us to the curb.\u201d\u00a0 I just have such <em>love<\/em> for people who were there with us.\u00a0 So\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How important was that love?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how we would have made it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 For you choosing to stay, especially.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I am sure there were some people who thought, \u201cShe\u2019s crazy if she stays;\u201d but there were more people who were like, \u201cWe can do this, Cindy.\u201d\u00a0 It was like they were doing it with us; and it was more like, \u201cDon\u2019t give up!\u00a0 Let\u2019s keep going.\u00a0 Keep fighting.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you have a best friend in the church?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, we were there\u2014I had only lived in the town for ten days.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would say, though, the one couple that\u2014he was on staff.\u00a0 He was one of the pastors\u2014he and his wife had gone through something similar years and years prior.\u00a0 They felt uniquely called to walk us through every moment of the next few years.\u00a0 For the first month\u2014and I\u2019m not exaggerating\u201430 days, every night, they were on our living room floor, every night.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sometimes, we\u2019d just cry together.\u00a0 Sometimes, we\u2019d talk.\u00a0 Sometimes, they\u2019d speak words of encouragement and of counsel; but the covering of support was <em>overwhelming.<\/em>\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re out of work now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 I am out of work.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, where\u2019d you get a job?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, they were very specific on the things they were going to allow me and not allow me to do.\u00a0 Granted\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You say, \u201cThey.\u201d\u00a0 Who are \u201cthey\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 The elders and the leadership of the church.\u00a0 They basically took us on, under their care.\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m not on staff anymore; but they felt an obligation, a calling, to walk us through the next few months and years.\u00a0 So, step one was\u2014they ripped the computer out of our house.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStep two was\u2014they would not allow me to take a job that they didn\u2019t approve of, which means I couldn\u2019t travel, couldn\u2019t be with a woman, couldn\u2019t have a computer\u2014which pretty much limited the options to Home Depot\u00ae, where I was a manager, selling two-by-fours to smelly contractors for the next couple of years.\u00a0 It was amazing.\u00a0 It was a great\u2014life was simple.\u00a0 You step out of ministry, and you\u2019ve got these guys that are just fighting for you.\u00a0 There\u2019s tough conversations and practical love.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, for the next two years, I sold two-by-fours, and God had really spoken some things into Cindy\u2019s heart about whether or not she should stay.\u00a0 That started a pretty amazing, amazing healing journey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In the midst of this\u2014what had been your practice, your pattern, for more than a decade\u2014just went away?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 It did.\u00a0 I was\u2014I believe that today I wouldn\u2019t say that I\u2019m fixed.\u00a0 I\u2019m just as capable of being tempted\u2014under the right conditions, falling into the same struggle that I was in 12 years ago; but I am free.\u00a0 The bondage, the strongholds of that sin, through confession, through prayer, and through the power of God\u2014He has broken\u2014God has broken those chains.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Cindy, I\u2019ve got a tough question for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How long did it take him to restore trust with you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s still restoring it today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Good answer.\u00a0 No, really, good answer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s the truth.\u00a0 My\u2014ultimately, my trust is in my Heavenly Father.\u00a0 He is the only One who will never let me down.\u00a0 My husband will let me down again\u2014my mother, my friends.\u00a0 People are people.\u00a0 They\u2019ll do that, but every day he works at it.\u00a0 He told me right after I came home and said, \u201cI\u2019m going to stay.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI know you\u2019ll never trust me again; but if you\u2019ll give me the chance, I\u2019ll spend the rest of my life trying.\u201d\u00a0 That is exactly what he has done.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNothing is off limits to me.\u00a0 Nothing in his life is off limits, and he works hard every day to restore it.\u00a0 It\u2019s become like second nature to him.\u00a0 It\u2019s his\u2014just like breathing, he\u2019s restoring trust.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m going to breathe today.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to restore some trust today.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How?\u00a0 How is he doing that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 He calls me every time he leaves the office to let me know he\u2019s coming home.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t travel alone.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t meet with women by himself.\u00a0 He\u2014the other night he was working late at church, and he had one of his staff call me.\u00a0 He said, \u201cHey, what\u2019s up?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cWhat are you calling me for?\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s like, \u201cHey, I just wanted you to know Chris will be probably leaving in the next 20 minutes.\u00a0 I just wanted to give you a heads up.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been working really hard.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s just\u2014he goes above and beyond to make sure that the Enemy cannot mess with my mind; and he works <em>so hard<\/em> to just earn that trust back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve got a computer back in your house; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 We do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How do you keep from going there?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Fort Knox.\u00a0 Every electronic device is completely monitored and locked down.\u00a0 I could get into all the minute details; but we use accountability software on every phone, every computer.\u00a0 We also use a filtering service on our entire wireless network because I\u2019m not just thinking about me\u2014I\u2019m thinking about my boys.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want one accidental click to open that world of darkness for them either.\u00a0 There is not one electronic device that we own that isn\u2019t ridiculously locked down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Speaking of your boys, you have two boys who live with you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have a third son, the one that we\u2019ve talked about, who was born to one of the women that you were involved with.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 As it turns out, you\u2019ve continued to have a relationship with her and with the boy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is where the story gets almost unbelievable.\u00a0 We met to talk about support years and years ago; and Cindy went and hugged her.\u00a0 I got to meet him for the very first time, and he\u2019s beautiful.\u00a0 She apologized to Cindy and told her that she knew that I was married, and Cindy just held her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would say most of the interaction happens between Cindy and her, not me and her.\u00a0 He comes and spends the summers with us, and he is with us at the holidays.\u00a0 They all know they\u2019re each other\u2019s brother.\u00a0 They\u2019ve all, in an age-appropriate way, have been explained to, by me, how this has all happened.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I look at him or think of him, he is no longer\u2014in the early days, it was like we\u2019re going to have this constant reminder for the rest of our lives of my sin.\u00a0 The Bible says that, \u201cGod will cause all things\u201d\u2014not some things, not just the good things, but \u201cHe\u2019ll cause all things to work together for good for those that love Him and are called according to His purpose.\u201d\u00a0 That little boy is that Scripture personified.\u00a0 He is no longer a reminder of my sin, but he is a reminder of the redemption of a good God that loves us and wants to take our <em>junk<\/em> and make it beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How did you do that, Cindy?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cindy:<\/strong>\u00a0 A little word called surrender.\u00a0 I just\u2014I took God at His Word\u2014that He says, \u201cHe\u2019ll work all things for good for those who love Him.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, I love You. Well, okay, that includes you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI decided a long time ago, when I surrendered my life to Him, that my life was not my own; and I remember I was making spaghetti\u2014it was probably two weeks after his confession, and I just remember crying.\u00a0 I just\u2014the Father just said, \u201cDo you remember when you would always tell Me you\u2019ll go through anything to bring Me glory?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m like, \u201cYes.\u00a0 Yes, I remember; I remember that.\u201d\u00a0 I just felt Him say, \u201cThis is part of that, and I\u2019m going to use this in My time to bring glory to My name and draw <em>men to Me<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cOh, could we have done this a different route?\u201d\u00a0 Nonetheless, this is the route that we\u2019re on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just kind of pulling back, looking at your story.\u00a0 There really has been a very clear theme, Cindy, that you have modeled in this.\u00a0 Surrender to Christ is really how you build a marriage.\u00a0 Surrender to Christ is how you handle it when there is failure in a marriage, and surrender to Christ is how you fight for your marriage to go the distance.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I want\u2014I want our listeners to take out of this, by way of application, \u201cYour marriage and your family are worth fighting for.\u201d\u00a0 You can pitch it and flush it.\u00a0 It\u2019s far more difficult to do what you two have done\u2014face the humiliation, the shame, the rebuilding, the brokenness of that; but our listeners have heard, \u201cThere is life!\u00a0 There is life!\u201d\u00a0 In that surrender, there is life in that brokenness.\u00a0 There is freedom from the prison.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chris:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just applaud you guys for telling your story and really giving hope to other people.\u00a0 One last thought.\u00a0 There are those, who are listening to us right now, who have failed in their marriage;
