give us the date and location.\u00a0 Call us <em>today<\/em> so that we can send you the kit because, if you\u2019ve got a date and location picked out, and you call today, we\u2019ll send you the kit for free.\u00a0 I-800-FL-TODAY is the number to call.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to hear Part Two of a message today on what makes a marriage <em>distinctively<\/em> Christian.\u00a0 Yesterday, Dennis, we heard that the first thing that makes a marriage distinctively Christian is that you ought to have a different purpose for your marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Today, we\u2019re going to hear how you need to have a different kind of love.\u00a0 This message is given by Bob Lepine.\u00a0 He gave this message to a group of counselors, many of them educators, from the Christian Counseling and Education Foundation.\u00a0 I think you\u2019ll agree with me that he does a great job.\u00a0 In fact, this opening story is a classic!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 [Recorded message]\u00a0 Whenever I\u2019m talking to couples about Ephesians, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChapter 5, I say, \u201cBefore we ever read Ephesians, Chapter 5, and look at husbands, and wives and how that all works out together, you have to read Ephesians 5 through the lens of Philippians 2.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen Mary Ann and I were dating, Mary Ann was farther along spiritually than I was because she was a Christian and I wasn\u2019t, when we started dating.\u00a0 I acted like one, she thought I was one, I thought I was one, but I hadn\u2019t been converted yet.\u00a0 We were dating and she came to me one time; and she said, \u201cYou know what I think would be good?\u00a0 We should memorize some verses from the Bible together.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said to her, \u201cThat\u2019s a great idea.\u201d\u00a0 I was thinking to myself, \u201cWell, why would you do that?\u00a0 I mean, it\u2019s in the book.\u00a0 You can go look it up any time you want.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 That\u2019s what I was thinking; but we were dating, so I was still lying to her.\u00a0 I said, \u201cYeah, that is a great idea.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cDid you have any particular verses in mind?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWell, I was thinking from Philippians, Chapter 2.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m thinking to myself, \u201cIs that Old Testament or New Testament?\u201d\u00a0 But I\u2019m acting like, \u201cOh, yeah, yeah.\u00a0 That\u2019s a meaningful passage.\u00a0 That would be good.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhich verses were you thinking?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cI was thinking the whole chapter.\u201d\u00a0 I said to her, \u201cWow!\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 \u201cWow, the whole chapter.\u00a0 Wow!\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cOkay, maybe this is not the woman for me.\u00a0 Memorize a whole chapter of the Bible?\u00a0 What is that all about?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, we started because we were dating; and I was trying to lie to her and get her to marry me.\u00a0 We started memorizing Philippians, Chapter 2.\u00a0 She may have gotten to the end; I never got to the end.\u00a0 I remember that I memorized verse 3 really quickly.\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m not a great memorizer; but for some reason, verse 3 just popped in.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of the reason it popped in, honestly, is because I put a little rhythm to it.\u00a0 I was doing rap back before there was rap.\u00a0 I had this\u2014like John 15:10 says (Speaking in rap, snapping fingers): \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>There is joy in the presence of the angels of God, <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Over one sinner who repents\u2014dah dah daht.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLike that?\u00a0 Huh?\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that good?\u00a0 See, if I can get a little rhythm working with it, I got it.\u00a0 So I had kind of the same beat going for Philippians\u2014I\u2019ll not do it for you because it will ruin the verse; but here\u2019s what it says.\u00a0 It says, \u201cDo nothing.\u201d\u00a0 Do what?\u00a0 \u201cNothing\u2014nothing.\u201d\u00a0 Nothing in the Greek means \u201cno thing\u201d\u2014nothing.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 It\u2019s what it means.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDo nothing\u2014do nothing from selfishness.\u201d\u00a0 Oh, come on.\u00a0 \u201cDo nothing from selfishness or empty conceit.\u201d\u00a0 Now you\u2019re meddling; okay?\u00a0 \u201cDo nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself.\u201d\u00a0 That one verse, applied in most marriages, would fix most things.\u00a0 Not everything\u2014fix most things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDo nothing from selfishness or empty conceit.\u00a0 With humility, let each of you regard one another as more important than himself.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s living upward and outward, not inward.\u00a0 That\u2019s what it\u2019s talking about.\u00a0 So that\u2019s the fundamental other-centeredness that needs to be a part of what\u2019s demonstrated.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe live to manifest that we\u2019re free from sin and self, that we\u2019ve been liberated from the bondage, the slavery to self; and we manifest that by living for God and living for others.\u00a0 The other nearest us is our mate.\u00a0 The way this works is\u2014our marriage is designed to model something.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI like that word.\u00a0 Have you ever been to a model home in a subdivision that they\u2019re building?\u00a0 Here\u2019s what you know about the model home; right?\u00a0 The model home has every extra that they don\u2019t tell you about for the rest of the homes.\u00a0 The crown moldings and all of that\u2014that\u2019s extra; but the model home is designed to say, \u201cThis is how good it could be.\u00a0 If everything was here, this is how good it could be.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour marriage should be a model marriage that says to people, \u201cThis is how good it could be.\u201d\u00a0 Not a perfect marriage\u2014people need to see in your model marriage that your model marriage includes conflict and forgiveness.\u00a0 Otherwise, all they\u2019re seeing is just phony stuff; right?\u00a0 They need to see that there\u2019s real life going on, and grace.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGenesis 2:24 says, you know, \u201cTherefore, a man shall leave father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.\u201d\u00a0 That picture should be a model picture.\u00a0 Now, we have to stop and ask, \u201cIs what we\u2019re modeling what we want to be teaching our kids?\u00a0 Is that what we want?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow many of you would say that there are patterns in your marriage today that are there because of patterns that you saw established in the marriage in the home you grew up in?\u00a0 Most of us would; right?\u00a0 Because we saw it, and we just can\u2019t help it.\u00a0 That\u2019s what we saw; that\u2019s what was <em>modeled<\/em> for us.\u00a0 Now, we can break some of those patterns.\u00a0 We can break some of those through the power of the Gospel, but the reality is\u2014what you\u2019re modeling for your kids is implanting in them, in the same way it was implanted in you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s implanting in them a powerful message.\u00a0 So, you should have the kind of marriage that is a Gospel-adorning marriage because your kids are learning what that looks like from you.\u00a0 If you say, \u201cWell, I\u2019m not motivated to do it for my spouse,\u201d are you motivated for your sons and your daughters?\u00a0 That\u2019s a part of what this needs to look like.\u00a0 The converse is true.\u00a0 When you have a good, God-honoring marriage, it\u2019s teaching your kids something about God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, your kids aren\u2019t going to see you do it perfectly.\u00a0 My kids have not seen us do it perfectly.\u00a0 They\u2019ve seen us do it redemptively.\u00a0 That\u2019s different than perfect, and that\u2019s good because they\u2019re not going to do it perfectively.\u00a0 So they have to know what redemptive looks like in the midst of imperfection.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember an 18-year-old girl who said to me, \u201cMy parents need to realize, before they talk to me about God\u2019s love for us, they need to show me God\u2019s love for one another.\u00a0 It\u2019s futile for them to try to tell me about a God Who loves me when they can\u2019t get along.\u201d\u00a0 She understands.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second group that\u2019s paying attention to your marriage are all of the younger couples.\u00a0 There are young people looking at you.\u00a0 I tell young couples all the time, \u201cLook for some couple in your church that\u2019s about 10 years ahead of you on the path; and you go, \u2018I\u2019d like our marriage to look that that 10 years from now,\u2019\u201d\u00a0 Then, say, \u201cCould we babysit your kids if you would sit down and talk to us about helping with marriage?\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of our language at our church back home is that we ought to be able to walk up to everybody in the church at some point and say, \u201cWho\u2019s pouring into you?\u201d and you should be able to name it right there.\u00a0 Then, the next question is, \u201cWho are you pouring into?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019d ask the same thing as a married couple, \u201cWho\u2019s pouring into you?\u201d and, \u201cWho are you pouring into?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s Second Timothy 2:2, \u201cThat which you learned from faithful men\u201d pass on to others so that they can pass it on to others.\u00a0 Who is pouring into you?\u00a0 Where are you drinking?\u00a0 And who are you pouring into?\u00a0 They\u2019re watching.\u00a0 Be intentional about that.\u00a0 The remarkable witness of a healthy, intact marriage\u2014it\u2019s what people are longing for.\u00a0 When they see a godly marriage, with a redemptive relationship, people would kill for that.\u00a0 In fact, I\u2019m expecting some day that we\u2019ll see a promo, \u201cNext on Oprah\u2014a happily-married couple.\u00a0 Learn their secrets;\u201d because people are going, \u201cHow do you do it?\u00a0 How do you do it?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur marriage should have a fundamentally different purpose, and our marriage should also have a fundamentally different kind of love.\u00a0 I said that, not only is it on display before your children and younger couples, but it\u2019s on display before the whole world, really.\u00a0 Everybody is watching everybody.\u00a0 You have to be aware of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat does this distinctively different kind of love look like?\u00a0 What does Christian love in marriage look like that\u2019s different than the love that two pagans have for one another?\u00a0 Well again, it\u2019s God-centered as opposed to being self-centered.\u00a0 It\u2019s upward and outward instead of being inward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut let me be specific.\u00a0 I think that Christian love is self-sacrificing, not self-serving love\u2014self-sacrificing, not self-serving love.\u00a0 Before Paul, in Philippians, Chapter 2\u2014before he says, \u201cDo nothing from selfishness or empty conceit,\u201d\u2014before that, he says, \u201cComplete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, in full accord and intent on one purpose.\u201d\u00a0 Then, \u201cdo nothing from selfishness.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat kind of love that is different than the world knows\u2014\u201cpatient, kind, not envious, not boastful, not arrogant, not rude, not insisting on its own way, not irritable or resentful, not rejoicing in wrongdoing, rejoicing in the truth, bearing all things, believing all things, hoping all things, enduring all things.\u201d\u00a0 We should have a self-sacrificing, not a self-serving love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second thing about our love\u2014our love should be a forgiving love, not a hard-hearted love.\u00a0\u00a0 That\u2019s different than what the flesh produces\u2014a forgiving love, not a hard-hearted love.\u00a0 Ephesians 4:26 , \u201cBe angry.\u00a0 Do not sin.\u201d\u2014\u201cBe angry.\u00a0 Do not sin.\u00a0 Do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the Devil an opportunity.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, you have to understand, when you hang on to anger, resentment, bitterness, you are in league with, in partnership with, the Devil.\u00a0 How many of you would say here today, \u201cWhat I really want for my life is to be in a concerted partnership with the Devil\u201d?\u00a0 So, do not sin in your anger.\u00a0 Resolve conflict, <em>or<\/em> you are in league with the Devil of Hell\u2014Ephesians 4:26.\u00a0\u00a0 Then, later on, verse 32. Here\u2019s who you are\u2014\u201cBe kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another.\u201d\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 \u201c\u2014even as God, for Christ\u2019s sake, has forgiven you.\u201d\u00a0 It must have a different kind of love, a forgiving love, not a hard-hearted love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe third thing is\u2014it should have a Spirit-controlled love, not a flesh-controlled love.\u00a0 I have a fundamental presupposition.\u00a0 Just stick with me on this.\u00a0 I told you that the Bible is about creation\u20141 and 2; rebellion, Chapter 3; redemption; consummation; right?\u00a0 Here\u2019s my fundamental presupposition\u2014Jesus said all of that can be summed up\u2014all the Law and the Prophets, at least the Old Testament and, I think, the New Testament too\u2014all of it can be summed up:\u00a0 \u201cLove God; love your neighbor.\u201d\u00a0 Live upward; live outward.\u00a0 That sums up the whole deal.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy fundamental presupposition is that the Bible is all about, \u201cHow do we love God, and how do we love others?\u201d\u00a0 When you read your Bible, you should be asking the question, \u201cHow does this help me love God?\u00a0 How does it help me love others?\u00a0 Is it talking about loving God or is it talking about loving others?\u00a0 How does it help me with those things?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you see it, and it\u2019s teaching me to love others, then the first person you ought to be thinking of is, \u201cOh, this applies in my marriage.\u201d\u00a0 See, it\u2019s easier for me to love the guy at church that I only see once a week.\u00a0 I can be nice to him\u2014I can be \u201ckind, tenderhearted, forgiving, gentle, humble, patient.\u201d\u00a0 I can be all of that with him because he\u2019s going to be gone in 45 minutes; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is true; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 You\u2019re in some marital conflict where the fellowship is intense; right?\u2014where the decibel level has increased and where there\u2019s just a little\u2014the room temperature is getting chillier, and there are some angry or hostile things, or some passive-aggressive stuff going on, and the phone rings.\u00a0 You go over, and with a complete stranger, you go, \u201cHi!\u00a0 How are you?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou hang up the phone, and it\u2019s back to \u201cthis stuff.\u201d\u00a0 Talk that way to that person!\u00a0 Why are you doing it with strangers, and you can\u2019t do it with one another?\u2014because we know one another so well\u2014because we can hurt one another so deeply\u2014because we can wound one another.\u00a0 That\u2019s why the intimacy really makes it hard.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tColossians 3\u2014I quoted this already, \u201cAs God\u2019s chosen ones, you put off anger, wrath, malice, slander, abusive speech and lying,\u201d and instead, what do you put on?\u00a0 \u201cAs God\u2019s chosen ones, holy and beloved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tC.S. Lewis said, \u201cThe best way to acquire a virtue is to act as if you already have it.\u201d\u00a0 Right?\u00a0 You go, \u201cWell, I don\u2019t feel compassionate.\u201d\u00a0 Okay, just act that way.\u00a0 For 30 days, act compassionately toward your spouse; and guess what will happen.\u00a0 Your heart will change.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t feel kind toward my spouse.\u201d\u00a0 Okay, just act that way.\u00a0 \u201cBut I\u2019m going to be self-righteous.\u201d\u00a0 Okay, go ahead and be self-righteous for a couple of days.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m going to be a phony.\u201d\u00a0 Alright, do it for a couple of days.\u00a0 Just be phony, and just see if it doesn\u2019t affect a change of heart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen it says, \u201cBear with one another.\u00a0 If anybody has a complaint against another, forgive.\u00a0 Even as the Lord has forgiven you, you must forgive.\u00a0 And above all, put on love which binds everything together in perfect harmony, and let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were once called, and be thankful.\u201d\u00a0 If I have to sum up the three different kinds of love we should have\u2014it would be commitment, self-sacrifice, and humility.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow the only way you have a different kind of love and a different kind of purpose in marriage is to have that transformation that we talked about; right?\u00a0 Here are the words that always come back to me as I think about the Gospel, as I talk about what God has done for us in Christ:\u00a0 He took those of us who were weighed down by sin and took the weight off.\u00a0 Forgiveness is the first thing.\u00a0 What a great\u2014it is Pilgrim removing the pack so he can get through the gate.\u00a0 It\u2019s the weight of sin, no longer being borne, and the liberation that comes from that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second thing is it is transformation.\u00a0 It\u2019s forgiveness, and then it\u2019s transformation.\u00a0 He took those of us who were self-focused and He is in the process of making us more and more in the image of his Son.\u00a0 Then, the third thing is it is hope.\u00a0 He took a hopeless people and gave them a hope that we didn\u2019t have.\u00a0 What hope did we have before we knew Christ?\u00a0 What hope did we have?\u00a0 Forgiveness, transformation, and hope\u2014when we understand that\u2014that liberates us to have a different purpose for our marriage and to have a different kind of love for one another.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 [Studio]\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ve been listening to a message given by Bob Lepine.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was nodding as I was listening back to that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You agree with yourself; huh?\u00a0 Those are good points.\u00a0 Forgiveness, transformation, and hope.\u00a0 God has done all that for us.\u00a0 Now the question is, \u201cWhat does that demand of us?\u201d\u00a0 Well, it demands allegiance to Him, surrender to Him, and then it means we pierce the darkness.\u00a0 We grow upward with Him, and we grow outward to impact our communities.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why we have made\u2014I called it earlier \u201can audacious offer.\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019ve never made an offer like this, in almost 20 years used, as you said, Bob, by several thousand couples, just like you, who said, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 We\u2019d like to do something like this.\u201d\u00a0 In fact, I met one of them in St. Augustine, Florida, at the <em>Weekend to Remember\u00ae.<\/em>\u00a0 A young lady came up.\u00a0 She had heard about it on the radio.\u00a0 She ordered the kit.\u00a0 You know how many people she had come to her deal?\u00a0 Four hundred couples!\u00a0 She got her pastor involved; and he said, \u201cThis can\u2019t be for a small group.\u00a0 This is great stuff!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what?\u00a0 In the coming six months, we need to see several hundred thousand people go through the <em>Art of Marriage<\/em> because people like Dennis, we heard that the first thing that makes a marriage distinctively Christian is that you ought to have a different purpose for your marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Today, we\u2019re going to hear how you need to have a different kind of love.\u00a0 This message is given by Bob Lepine.\u00a0 He gave this message to a group of counselors, many of them educators, from the Christian Counseling and Education Foundation.\u00a0 I think you\u2019ll agree with me that he does a great job.\u00a0 In fact, this opening story is a classic!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 [Recorded message]\u00a0 Whenever I\u2019m talking to couples about Ephesians, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChapter 5, I say, \u201cBefore we ever read Ephesians, Chapter 5, and look at husbands, and wives and how that all works out together, you have to read Ephesians 5 through the lens of Philippians 2.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen Mary Ann and I were dating, Mary Ann was farther along spiritually than I was because she was a Christian and I wasn\u2019t, when we started dating.\u00a0 I acted like one, she thought I was one, I thought I was one, but I hadn\u2019t been converted yet.\u00a0 We were dating and she came to me one time; and she said, \u201cYou know what I think would be good?\u00a0 We should memorize some verses from the Bible together.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said to her, \u201cThat\u2019s a great idea.\u201d\u00a0 I was thinking to myself, \u201cWell, why would you do that?\u00a0 I mean, it\u2019s in the book.\u00a0 You can go look it up any time you want.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 That\u2019s what I was thinking; but we were dating, so I was still lying to her.\u00a0 I said, \u201cYeah, that is a great idea.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cDid you have any particular verses in mind?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWell, I was thinking from Philippians, Chapter 2.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m thinking to myself, \u201cIs that Old Testament or New Testament?\u201d\u00a0 But I\u2019m acting like, \u201cOh, yeah, yeah.\u00a0 That\u2019s a meaningful passage.\u00a0 That would be good.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhich verses were you thinking?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cI was thinking the whole chapter.\u201d\u00a0 I said to her, \u201cWow!\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 \u201cWow, the whole chapter.\u00a0 Wow!\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cOkay, maybe this is not the woman for me.\u00a0 Memorize a whole chapter of the Bible?\u00a0 What is that all about?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, we started because we were dating; and I was trying to lie to her and get her to marry me.\u00a0 We started memorizing Philippians, Chapter 2.\u00a0 She may have gotten to the end; I never got to the end.\u00a0 I remember that I memorized verse 3 really quickly.\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m not a great memorizer; but for some reason, verse 3 just popped in.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of the reason it popped in, honestly, is because I put a little rhythm to it.\u00a0 I was doing rap back before there was rap.\u00a0 I had this\u2014like John 15:10 says (Speaking in rap, snapping fingers): \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>There is joy in the presence of the angels of God, <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Over one sinner who repents\u2014dah dah daht.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLike that?\u00a0 Huh?\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that good?\u00a0 See, if I can get a little rhythm working with it, I got it.\u00a0 So I had kind of the same beat going for Philippians\u2014I\u2019ll not do it for you because it will ruin the verse; but here\u2019s what it says.\u00a0 It says, \u201cDo nothing.\u201d\u00a0 Do what?\u00a0 \u201cNothing\u2014nothing.\u201d\u00a0 Nothing in the Greek means \u201cno thing\u201d\u2014nothing.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 It\u2019s what it means.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDo nothing\u2014do nothing from selfishness.\u201d\u00a0 Oh, come on.\u00a0 \u201cDo nothing from selfishness or empty conceit.\u201d\u00a0 Now you\u2019re meddling; okay?\u00a0 \u201cDo nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself.\u201d\u00a0 That one verse, applied in most marriages, would fix most things.\u00a0 Not everything\u2014fix most things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDo nothing from selfishness or empty conceit.\u00a0 With humility, let each of you regard one another as more important than himself.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s living upward and outward, not inward.\u00a0 That\u2019s what it\u2019s talking about.\u00a0 So that\u2019s the fundamental other-centeredness that needs to be a part of what\u2019s demonstrated.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe live to manifest that we\u2019re free from sin and self, that we\u2019ve been liberated from the bondage, the slavery to self; and we manifest that by living for God and living for others.\u00a0 The other nearest us is our mate.\u00a0 The way this works is\u2014our marriage is designed to model something.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI like that word.\u00a0 Have you ever been to a model home in a subdivision that they\u2019re building?\u00a0 Here\u2019s what you know about the model home; right?\u00a0 The model home has every extra that they don\u2019t tell you about for the rest of the homes.\u00a0 The crown moldings and all of that\u2014that\u2019s extra; but the model home is designed to say, \u201cThis is how good it could be.\u00a0 If everything was here, this is how good it could be.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour marriage should be a model marriage that says to people, \u201cThis is how good it could be.\u201d\u00a0 Not a perfect marriage\u2014people need to see in your model marriage that your model marriage includes conflict and forgiveness.\u00a0 Otherwise, all they\u2019re seeing is just phony stuff; right?\u00a0 They need to see that there\u2019s real life going on, and grace.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGenesis 2:24 says, you know, \u201cTherefore, a man shall leave father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.\u201d\u00a0 That picture should be a model picture.\u00a0 Now, we have to stop and ask, \u201cIs what we\u2019re modeling what we want to be teaching our kids?\u00a0 Is that what we want?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow many of you would say that there are patterns in your marriage today that are there because of patterns that you saw established in the marriage in the home you grew up in?\u00a0 Most of us would; right?\u00a0 Because we saw it, and we just can\u2019t help it.\u00a0 That\u2019s what we saw; that\u2019s what was <em>modeled<\/em> for us.\u00a0 Now, we can break some of those patterns.\u00a0 We can break some of those through the power of the Gospel, but the reality is\u2014what you\u2019re modeling for your kids is implanting in them, in the same way it was implanted in you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s implanting in them a powerful message.\u00a0 So, you should have the kind of marriage that is a Gospel-adorning marriage because your kids are learning what that looks like from you.\u00a0 If you say, \u201cWell, I\u2019m not motivated to do it for my spouse,\u201d are you motivated for your sons and your daughters?\u00a0 That\u2019s a part of what this needs to look like.\u00a0 The converse is true.\u00a0 When you have a good, God-honoring marriage, it\u2019s teaching your kids something about God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, your kids aren\u2019t going to see you do it perfectly.\u00a0 My kids have not seen us do it perfectly.\u00a0 They\u2019ve seen us do it redemptively.\u00a0 That\u2019s different than perfect, and that\u2019s good because they\u2019re not going to do it perfectively.\u00a0 So they have to know what redemptive looks like in the midst of imperfection.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember an 18-year-old girl who said to me, \u201cMy parents need to realize, before they talk to me about God\u2019s love for us, they need to show me God\u2019s love for one another.\u00a0 It\u2019s futile for them to try to tell me about a God Who loves me when they can\u2019t get along.\u201d\u00a0 She understands.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second group that\u2019s paying attention to your marriage are all of the younger couples.\u00a0 There are young people looking at you.\u00a0 I tell young couples all the time, \u201cLook for some couple in your church that\u2019s about 10 years ahead of you on the path; and you go, \u2018I\u2019d like our marriage to look that that 10 years from now,\u2019\u201d\u00a0 Then, say, \u201cCould we babysit your kids if you would sit down and talk to us about helping with marriage?\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPart of our language at our church back home is that we ought to be able to walk up to everybody in the church at some point and say, \u201cWho\u2019s pouring into you?\u201d and you should be able to name it right there.\u00a0 Then, the next question is, \u201cWho are you pouring into?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019d ask the same thing as a married couple, \u201cWho\u2019s pouring into you?\u201d and, \u201cWho are you pouring into?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s Second Timothy 2:2, \u201cThat which you learned from faithful men\u201d pass on to others so that they can pass it on to others.\u00a0 Who is pouring into you?\u00a0 Where are you drinking?\u00a0 And who are you pouring into?\u00a0 They\u2019re watching.\u00a0 Be intentional about that.\u00a0 The remarkable witness of a healthy, intact marriage\u2014it\u2019s what people are longing for.\u00a0 When they see a godly marriage, with a redemptive relationship, people would kill for that.\u00a0 In fact, I\u2019m expecting some day that we\u2019ll see a promo, \u201cNext on Oprah\u2014a happily-married couple.\u00a0 Learn their secrets;\u201d because people are going, \u201cHow do you do it?\u00a0 How do you do it?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur marriage should have a fundamentally different purpose, and our marriage should also have a fundamentally different kind of love.\u00a0 I said that, not only is it on display before your children and younger couples, but it\u2019s on display before the whole world, really.\u00a0 Everybody is watching everybody.\u00a0 You have to be aware of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat does this distinctively different kind of love look like?\u00a0 What does Christian love in marriage look like that\u2019s different than the love that two pagans have for one another?\u00a0 Well again, it\u2019s God-centered as opposed to being self-centered.\u00a0 It\u2019s upward and outward instead of being inward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut let me be specific.\u00a0 I think that Christian love is self-sacrificing, not self-serving love\u2014self-sacrificing, not self-serving love.\u00a0 Before Paul, in Philippians, Chapter 2\u2014before he says, \u201cDo nothing from selfishness or empty conceit,\u201d\u2014before that, he says, \u201cComplete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, in full accord and intent on one purpose.\u201d\u00a0 Then, \u201cdo nothing from selfishness.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat kind of love that is different than the world knows\u2014\u201cpatient, kind, not envious, not boastful, not arrogant, not rude, not insisting on its own way, not irritable or resentful, not rejoicing in wrongdoing, rejoicing in the truth, bearing all things, believing all things, hoping all things, enduring all things.\u201d\u00a0 We should have a self-sacrificing, not a self-serving love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second thing about our love\u2014our love should be a forgiving love, not a hard-hearted love.\u00a0\u00a0 That\u2019s different than what the flesh produces\u2014a forgiving love, not a hard-hearted love.\u00a0 Ephesians 4:26 , \u201cBe angry.\u00a0 Do not sin.\u201d\u2014\u201cBe angry.\u00a0 Do not sin.\u00a0 Do not let the sun go down on your anger, and do not give the Devil an opportunity.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, you have to understand, when you hang on to anger, resentment, bitterness, you are in league with, in partnership with, the Devil.\u00a0 How many of you would say here today, \u201cWhat I really want for my life is to be in a concerted partnership with the Devil\u201d?\u00a0 So, do not sin in your anger.\u00a0 Resolve conflict, <em>or<\/em> you are in league with the Devil of Hell\u2014Ephesians 4:26.\u00a0\u00a0 Then, later on, verse 32. Here\u2019s who you are\u2014\u201cBe kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another.\u201d\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 \u201c\u2014even as God, for Christ\u2019s sake, has forgiven you.\u201d\u00a0 It must have a different kind of love, a forgiving love, not a hard-hearted love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe third thing is\u2014it should have a Spirit-controlled love, not a flesh-controlled love.\u00a0 I have a fundamental presupposition.\u00a0 Just stick with me on this.\u00a0 I told you that the Bible is about creation\u20141 and 2; rebellion, Chapter 3; redemption; consummation; right?\u00a0 Here\u2019s my fundamental presupposition\u2014Jesus said all of that can be summed up\u2014all the Law and the Prophets, at least the Old Testament and, I think, the New Testament too\u2014all of it can be summed up:\u00a0 \u201cLove God; love your neighbor.\u201d\u00a0 Live upward; live outward.\u00a0 That sums up the whole deal.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy fundamental presupposition is that the Bible is all about, \u201cHow do we love God, and how do we love others?\u201d\u00a0 When you read your Bible, you should be asking the question, \u201cHow does this help me love God?\u00a0 How does it help me love others?\u00a0 Is it talking about loving God or is it talking about loving others?\u00a0 How does it help me with those things?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you see it, and it\u2019s teaching me to love others, then the first person you ought to be thinking of is, \u201cOh, this applies in my marriage.\u201d\u00a0 See, it\u2019s easier for me to love the guy at church that I only see once a week.\u00a0 I can be nice to him\u2014I can be \u201ckind, tenderhearted, forgiving, gentle, humble, patient.\u201d\u00a0 I can be all of that with him because he\u2019s going to be gone in 45 minutes; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is true; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 You\u2019re in some marital conflict where the fellowship is intense; right?\u2014where the decibel level has increased and where there\u2019s just a little\u2014the room temperature is getting chillier, and there are some angry or hostile things, or some passive-aggressive stuff going on, and the phone rings.\u00a0 You go over, and with a complete stranger, you go, \u201cHi!\u00a0 How are you?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou hang up the phone, and it\u2019s back to \u201cthis stuff.\u201d\u00a0 Talk that way to that person!\u00a0 Why are you doing it with strangers, and you can\u2019t do it with one another?\u2014because we know one another so well\u2014because we can hurt one another so deeply\u2014because we can wound one another.\u00a0 That\u2019s why the intimacy really makes it hard.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tColossians 3\u2014I quoted this already, \u201cAs God\u2019s chosen ones, you put off anger, wrath, malice, slander, abusive speech and lying,\u201d and instead, what do you put on?\u00a0 \u201cAs God\u2019s chosen ones, holy and beloved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tC.S. Lewis said, \u201cThe best way to acquire a virtue is to act as if you already have it.\u201d\u00a0 Right?\u00a0 You go, \u201cWell, I don\u2019t feel compassionate.\u201d\u00a0 Okay, just act that way.\u00a0 For 30 days, act compassionately toward your spouse; and guess what will happen.\u00a0 Your heart will change.\u00a0 \u201cI don\u2019t feel kind toward my spouse.\u201d\u00a0 Okay, just act that way.\u00a0 \u201cBut I\u2019m going to be self-righteous.\u201d\u00a0 Okay, go ahead and be self-righteous for a couple of days.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m going to be a phony.\u201d\u00a0 Alright, do it for a couple of days.\u00a0 Just be phony, and just see if it doesn\u2019t affect a change of heart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen it says, \u201cBear with one another.\u00a0 If anybody has a complaint against another, forgive.\u00a0 Even as the Lord has forgiven you, you must forgive.\u00a0 And above all, put on love which binds everything together in perfect harmony, and let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were once called, and be thankful.\u201d\u00a0 If I have to sum up the three different kinds of love we should have\u2014it would be commitment, self-sacrifice, and humility.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow the only way you have a different kind of love and a different kind of purpose in marriage is to have that transformation that we talked about; right?\u00a0 Here are the words that always come back to me as I think about the Gospel, as I talk about what God has done for us in Christ:\u00a0 He took those of us who were weighed down by sin and took the weight off.\u00a0 Forgiveness is the first thing.\u00a0 What a great\u2014it is Pilgrim removing the pack so he can get through the gate.\u00a0 It\u2019s the weight of sin, no longer being borne, and the liberation that comes from that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe second thing is it is transformation.\u00a0 It\u2019s forgiveness, and then it\u2019s transformation.\u00a0 He took those of us who were self-focused and He is in the process of making us more and more in the image of his Son.\u00a0 Then, the third thing is it is hope.\u00a0 He took a hopeless people and gave them a hope that we didn\u2019t have.\u00a0 What hope did we have before we knew Christ?\u00a0 What hope did we have?\u00a0 Forgiveness, transformation, and hope\u2014when we understand that\u2014that liberates us to have a different purpose for our marriage and to have a different kind of love for one another.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 [Studio]\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ve been listening to a message given by Bob Lepine.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was nodding as I was listening back to that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You agree with yourself;
