but right now, in our country, we are losing the battle for marriage and family.\u00a0 It\u2019s <em>destroying<\/em> a generation of children, and it\u2019s going to have an impact that is going to <em>devastate<\/em> generations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat FamilyLife has decided to do is\u2014we\u2019ve said, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 No holds barred; and I don\u2019t know of a finer tool today available for building marriages and families that can be used by a lay couple, a husband and a wife like <em>you,<\/em> to make a difference where <em>you<\/em> live, than the <em>Art of Marriage.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So call 1-800-FL-TODAY.\u00a0 Tell us the date and the location, and we\u2019ll send you the kit.\u00a0 But you have to do it this week if you want to get the kit at no cost.\u00a0 1-800-FL-TODAY is the number to call.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to talk about marriage today.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk about what it is that makes a marriage <em>distinctively<\/em> Christian.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s a message given by Bob Lepine to a group of folks who are very committed to Scripture.\u00a0 It\u2019s the Christian Counseling and Education Foundation, who are highly committed to the Scriptures and to biblical marriage.\u00a0 I think you\u2019re going to enjoy Bob\u2019s message, just about how Christian marriage is really different.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 [Recorded message]\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk about how the Gospel adorns a marriage relationship; or, \u201cWhat does a distinctively Christian marriage look like?\u00a0 What should set it apart?\u201d\u00a0 Anybody can get married.\u00a0 Lots of people get married.\u00a0 Some Christians get married and have hard marriages, and they have conflict.\u00a0 Some pagans get married and they get along, and seem to be doing great.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we looked at external measures and said, \u201cWell, if you have a Christian marriage, everything should be happy and rosy; and if you have a pagan marriage, everything should be hard and conflict.\u201d\u00a0 Empirical data does not verify that.\u00a0 Are we right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we say, \u201cWhat <em>does<\/em> differentiate?\u00a0 What <em>does<\/em> make things different?\u00a0 Why are Christian marriages different than non-Christian marriages?\u201d\u00a0 Well, we have to begin with this premise:\u00a0 Christianity is about transformation.\u00a0 It\u2019s about the transformation from one domain to another domain.\u00a0 It\u2019s about the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light.\u00a0 Some of us were deep in darkness before we were translated to the kingdom of light, and there\u2019s a lot of learning who we are and becoming who we are going on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe transformation is really the issue.\u00a0 There should be some fundamental change that is observable in terms of a Christian marriage versus a pagan marriage.\u00a0 When I was in college, I had thought about going to law school.\u00a0 That was my vocational plan.\u00a0 The reason it was my vocational plan is because, when I was in the sixth grade, I watched Perry Mason; and I thought, \u201cMan, if in an hour, you can just argue people till they break down, and cry, and confess things, that\u2019s what I want to do for a living.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, in the ninth grade, I actually got a little more noble purpose when my social studies teacher talked about pro bono lawyers who help people in impoverished areas deal with their legal issues.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI want to help the poor.\u201d\u00a0 So that was my vocational goal.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy cousin-in-law, who was a lawyer, told me, \u201cWhen you go to undergrad school, you should study something that is simple and you think you\u2019ll get good grades in because they just want people who got good grades.\u201d\u00a0 So, I said, \u201cRadio would be simple, and I think I could get decent grades and wouldn\u2019t have to do a whole lot of work.\u201d\u00a0 In fact, I graduated and I took a summer job at a local radio station, in between undergrad and graduate school.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe middle of the summer job, they came to me and they said, \u201cWould you like to stay on?\u00a0 We\u2019ll give you an extra $100 a month.\u201d\u00a0 It was a bump from $750 a month to $850 a month.\u00a0 \u201cYeah; yeah, baby.\u201d\u00a0 So I said, \u201cWell, I can\u2019t turn down the money.\u201d\u00a0 Actually, I was having such a great time doing it, I thought, \u201cIf I don\u2019t do law school, I may never do it, but then,\u201d I said, \u201cI can always kind of do lawyering avocationally in my marriage relationship.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what I wound up doing.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 When we have conflict, I just call my wife to the stand and cross-examine her.\u00a0 That did not work out so well, anyway.\u00a0 I tell you all of that because, in undergraduate school, I decided I was going to look around for what law school I wanted to go to.\u00a0 One of the law schools that came up on my radar screen was Pepperdine; but when I went with these buddies of mine out to California, one of my buddies knew a family that lived in Pasadena who said we could stay with them.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cThat\u2019s great.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t know these people at all.\u00a0 I\u2019d been a Christian for about six or seven months at this point.\u00a0 I\u2019ll never forget walking into this home in Pasadena where we were going to be staying for the next couple of days.\u00a0 I noticed that there was just something different in the atmosphere of that home.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t grow up in a Christian home.\u00a0 We were a church-going home; but the Gospel wasn\u2019t a part of our lives, and there was some tension.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dad was alcoholic; my dad was bipolar or manic-depressive\u2014is what they called it back in the day.\u00a0 He and Mom had conflict, and there were issues there.\u00a0 I walked into this home.\u00a0 I\u2019d never met these people before; and within 20 minutes of meeting them, it was like I\u2019d known them all my life.\u00a0 We were talking about stuff, and I felt free and relaxed.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cThis is different.\u00a0 There\u2019s a different atmosphere in this house.\u00a0 There\u2019s a different <em>fragrance.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, of course, you read in II Corinthians where it says, \u201cThanks be to God who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Him everywhere.\u00a0 For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.\u201d\u00a0 You could smell it in that house\u2014the fragrance of Christ in the lives of these transformed people with hospitality, and genuine caring, and love, and graciousness manifested.\u00a0 I\u2019ve never forgotten what it was like to walk into that kind of environment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow the question for us then is\u2014we look at our own homes and we would say, \u201cWhat does it smell like at your house?\u201d\u00a0 If folks walked into your house, would the fragrance of Christ be present?\u00a0 Not with the candles you have lit in the bathroom, not with how clean it is, but is the inviting atmosphere of the grace of God so present that people are overwhelmed by it as they see it in your home and in your marriage?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo people look at your marriage and see and smell the fragrance of Christ?\u00a0 Shouldn\u2019t they?\u00a0 You go, \u201cI know they <em>should<\/em>, and I don\u2019t think they always <em>do<\/em>, and I want to get there,\u201d but, \u201cHow do we get there?\u00a0 How does a marriage <em>have<\/em> the fragrance of Christ?\u00a0 What makes it distinctively Christian?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to suggest to you two things that make a marriage distinctively Christian.\u00a0 The first is that there\u2019s a different <em>purpose<\/em> for marriage than there is with the pagan.\u00a0 The second is that there\u2019s a different <em>kind of love<\/em> present in a Christian marriage than in a pagan marriage.\u00a0 Those are two <em>distinctly<\/em> different things about a Christian marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is just a little side trail; but if you\u2019re familiar with Jonathan Edwards\u2019 book, <em>Religious Affections,<\/em> you\u2019ll know that Edwards wrote that to talk about what distinguishes the evidence of true revival versus what can just be manufactured by human effort.\u00a0 The first Great Awakening was under attack from people who thought that the religious enthusiasm that was being expressed in these New England churches was a little improper; and they were saying, \u201cThat\u2019s just human manufacturing.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEdwards wrote <em>Religious Affections, <\/em>in a way, to say, \u201cYou know, there are some things that can be manufactured.\u201d\u00a0 How loud you sing has nothing to do with whether the Spirit is working in your life.\u00a0 There are all kinds of things that can come out of the human life; but I will tell you that, in your spiritual life and in your marriage, having a different purpose, a God-centered purpose, is not something that the flesh can generate.\u00a0 No flesh generates a God-centered purpose for anything.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI will also tell you that having the kind of love that the Bible defines\u2014you don\u2019t let the culture define love, you don\u2019t let yourself define love, you have to agree to a biblical definition of love.\u00a0 Having that kind of love is impossible, apart from the transforming grace of God in your life.\u00a0 A different purpose and a different kind of love will be evidence of genuine transformation that has taken place in your lives, and in the lives of two people coming together as one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is just a little side note\u2014but as I was working on this project for <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>, one of the things that dawned on me as I was talking with\u2014and what a privilege to be able to sit down with Al Mohler and Russell Moore at Southern Seminary, and to talk with Voddie Baucham, and to talk with Dr. Harvey, and to talk with Paul David Tripp\u2014all these guys\u2014but as we were talking about it, here is the epiphany that I had.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf I were to ask you, \u201cWhat is the crowning point of God\u2019s creation?\u00a0 What is the pinnacle of God\u2019s creation?\u201d\u00a0 I would have answered that question six months ago by saying, \u201cIt is mankind.\u00a0 Humankind is the pinnacle of God\u2019s creation.\u00a0 At the end of everything, He created His greatest masterpiece.\u00a0 He put His soul in the man and the woman, and they are the pinnacle of creation.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I kept reading in Genesis 2; and you know what it says?\u00a0 After He created the man and the woman what did He do?\u00a0 He married them; and the two became what?\u2014one flesh.\u00a0 I want to propose to you that marriage is actually the final masterpiece of creation\u2014that the two becoming one is when God is done.\u00a0 The very next thing that happens is the attack of the serpent, dividing the man and the woman, and causing them, as they rebel against God, to be alienated from one another.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs soon as we say that, I have to make sure you understand that does not mean that single people are second class.\u00a0 I hope I don\u2019t have to go through a whole theology of singleness.\u00a0 Single people are called by God into a special season of singleness.\u00a0 I remember talking to Elisabeth Elliot; and I said, \u201cYou know, most people, when they come up to you, they say, \u2018Do you think I have the gift of singleness?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe said, \u201cWell, I ask them a question when they ask me that.\u00a0 I ask them, \u2018Are you single?\u2019\u00a0 And they say, \u2018Yes;\u2019 and I say, \u2018Well, then, you have the gift of singleness.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 She says, \u201cAnd they want to know, \u2018Yes, but am I <em>always <\/em>going to have it?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 And she says, \u201cI don\u2019t know!\u00a0 Nobody knows, except God; but <em>today<\/em> you have the gift of singleness.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, back to having a different <em>purpose<\/em> for marriage\u2014when I got married, I did not have a noble, godly, biblical purpose for my marriage.\u00a0 I talked to a friend of mine.\u00a0 I said, \u201cIf you were going to share verses on marriage with young couples and you weren\u2019t going to use Ephesians 5 and 1 Peter 3, what verses would you share?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI would share the verse that I proposed with.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cPsalm 34:3, \u2018O magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt His name together.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was not what I was thinking when I proposed to Mary Ann.\u00a0 I\u2019m guessing that some of you in this room were not thinking, \u201cO magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt His name together.\u201d\u00a0 Here\u2019s what I was thinking\u2014I was thinking that somebody had told me, \u201cIf you want a truly happy marriage, it needs to have Jesus at the center.\u201d\u00a0 So, I was thinking, \u201cOkay, I want a truly happy marriage.\u00a0 We need to have Jesus at the center, whatever that means.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s about as far as it went.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we were putting this <em>Art of Marriage<\/em> project together, we asked our filmmaker friend in New Orleans to go down to the French Quarter.\u00a0 Before he went to the French Quarter, we asked him to go back to the park and to talk to kids about marriage; and then go down on the French Quarter and talk to people, walking along the French Quarter, and just ask them what their thoughts are on marriage.\u00a0 Just watch this clip, if we can.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cUmmm\u2014because they want kids\u2014\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI think most people get married because love is a really strong feeling; and marriage is a way\u2014to like\u2014show that, I guess.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cA lot of people think it\u2019s good.\u00a0 Some people think it\u2019s strange.\u00a0 I\u2019d love to feel it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cAre you crazy?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI hate boys.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIf I will marry, I will be good.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThey usually care about each other, and they usually smile at each other and hold hands.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019d like to feel it about someone who makes me happy, who makes me smile, who knows the right things to say, and even if he messes up, he does it in the right way.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThe other person likes them; and they like them, too.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYou\u2019ll see one day that they\u2019ll peek at each other when my mom\u2019s making breakfast and they smile, or they say goodbye when my dad has to go to work.\u00a0 They just give you this warm feeling when you see them do those little things that make you feel what they\u2019re feeling.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIt makes me feel happy that I\u2019m in a family that loves each other, and that my parents love each other, and I\u2019m fortunate.\u00a0 It makes me feel loved and want to love everyone else.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPeople get married because they want to spend the rest of their lives with each other.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When we start talking to the grownups, you get a whole different perspective.\u00a0 The kids have this lofty ideal of what they want marriage to be, and then the grownups have the reality of what\u2019s going on.\u00a0 There\u2019s still a longing; there\u2019s still a desire, but the reality has set in.\u00a0 They\u2019re thinking like most people in the culture are thinking.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what people are thinking\u2014when they get married, here\u2019s the kind of purpose they have in mind for marriage:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWell, we\u2019re just in love.\u00a0 We have these strong feelings for one another, so I guess that\u2019s what you do.\u201d\u00a0 Of course, they have no idea what real love is.\u00a0 They think it\u2019s somebody feeling special about you.\u00a0 Or they think, \u201cWe\u2019ve dated long enough.\u00a0 Time to fish or cut bait.\u201d\u00a0 Or they\u2019ll go, \u201cI\u2019m getting married because there are economic benefits,\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019m getting married because then you can have legitimate, guilt-free sex,\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019m getting married because you get food, and housekeeping, and laundry, all rolled into one.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is honestly what some people are thinking; right?\u00a0 Or, \u201cI\u2019m getting married because it will cure my loneliness.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the big ones; and by the way, some of the loneliest people I know are married.\u00a0 Some people will get married because the clock is ticking and, \u201cI have to start a family pretty soon.\u00a0 So, I\u2019d better find <em>somebody<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 Some will get married because they want to get their parents off their back.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome get married because they want to escape a bad situation, like abusive parents.\u00a0 Some get married because they want to fix a bad situation, like they\u2019re pregnant.\u00a0 Most people, who are getting married, including me when I got married, are getting married for self-centered, not God-centered purposes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason is because they are self-centered, not God-centered people.\u00a0 You understand how that works; right?\u00a0 When you are at the center of your universe, then your motivation for marriage is not to lay down your life for another person.\u00a0 It\u2019s to feel better, to get whatever benefits accrue to you.\u00a0 I like the way that Bill Gillham said it.\u00a0 He said, \u201cWhen kids are little, they draw a circle around their lives and declare themselves \u2018Lord of the Ring.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s true. That\u2019s the universal human condition.\u00a0 We are self-centered; and so our self-centered tendency, carried into marriage, creates two self-centered people trying to negotiate enough <em>good<\/em> out of this deal so that they can co-exist.\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s why we have to pull back and say our purpose really is defined, not by what our desires are, but our purpose is designed by what the Designer had in mind.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you try to make your marriage be something different than a vehicle through which God is glorified, a vehicle through which people can smell the aroma of Christ, a demonstration of the Gospel to the world\u2014that is the fundamental highest purpose for why you exist and for why marriage exists.\u00a0 When you try to make marriage about your happiness or your satisfaction, you\u2019re trying to make a bicycle into a motorcycle.\u00a0 That\u2019s not what it was made to be.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, is there companionship that comes along with it?\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Is there sex that comes into the deal?\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I\u2019m glad for these things.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that it all has to be, \u201cWell, we can\u2019t have any fun because we have to be about glorifying God.\u201d\u00a0 No.\u00a0 We magnify the Lord together.\u00a0 But if we don\u2019t have a fundamentally different purpose for marriage, where the two of us look together and say, \u201cLook, this isn\u2019t about us.\u00a0 This is about putting the Gospel on display to a watching world, and how we relate to one another says something about Jesus.\u00a0 Do we want it to say the right thing or the wrong thing?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen folks can get that perspective, it\u2019s a paradigm-changing perspective.\u00a0 Paul Tripp says it this way, and I think this is so good.\u00a0 He said, \u201cWe were made to live upward and outward,\u201d but most of us live inward.\u00a0 When we can quit living inward and start living upward and outward, life changes.\u00a0 When our marriage can be about upward and outward, things change.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>[Studio]\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ve been listening to a message given by co-host here, Bob Lepine.\u00a0 He enjoyed that; he was preaching it there.\u00a0 I just want to hitchhike on your last point you were making there.\u00a0 You said a marriage was designed by God to be lived upward\u2014that\u2019s in a relationship with Him\u2014and outward \u2013that means reaching out to the culture, something beyond our own needs.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s why, Bob, we\u2019re making the most audacious offer I think we\u2019ve ever made in the history of our ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We are offering folks, this week, an opportunity to Counseling and Education Foundation.\u00a0 The focus of the event was all about marriage, and I got a chance to talk about what makes a marriage distinctively Christian.\u00a0 Before we hear that, I family.\u00a0 It\u2019s <em>destroying<\/em> a generation of children, and it\u2019s going to have an impact that is going to <em>devastate<\/em> generations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat FamilyLife has decided to do is\u2014we\u2019ve said, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 No holds barred; the way to address this size of a problem is not a bigger organization.\u00a0 It\u2019s turning loose folks, like you, where you live in your neighborhood, your church, to reach out to your neighborhoods and say, \u2018Christians have the solution.\u00a0 We have the biblical blueprints for building marriage today.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk about what it is that makes a marriage <em>distinctively<\/em> Christian.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s a message given by Bob Lepine to a group of folks who are very committed to Scripture.\u00a0 It\u2019s the Christian Counseling and Education Foundation, who are highly committed to the Scriptures and to biblical marriage.\u00a0 I think you\u2019re going to enjoy Bob\u2019s message, just about how Christian marriage is really different.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 [Recorded message]\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk about how the Gospel adorns a marriage relationship; or, \u201cWhat does a distinctively Christian marriage look like?\u00a0 What should set it apart?\u201d\u00a0 Anybody can get married.\u00a0 Lots of people get married.\u00a0 Some Christians get married and have hard marriages, and they have conflict.\u00a0 Some pagans get married and they get along, and seem to be doing great.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we looked at external measures and said, \u201cWell, if you have a Christian marriage, everything should be happy and rosy; and if you have a pagan marriage, everything should be hard and conflict.\u201d\u00a0 Empirical data does not verify that.\u00a0 Are we right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf we say, \u201cWhat <em>does<\/em> differentiate?\u00a0 What <em>does<\/em> make things different?\u00a0 Why are Christian marriages different than non-Christian marriages?\u201d\u00a0 Well, we have to begin with this premise:\u00a0 Christianity is about transformation.\u00a0 It\u2019s about the transformation from one domain to another domain.\u00a0 It\u2019s about the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light.\u00a0 Some of us were deep in darkness before we were translated to the kingdom of light, and there\u2019s a lot of learning who we are and becoming who we are going on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe transformation is really the issue.\u00a0 There should be some fundamental change that is observable in terms of a Christian marriage versus a pagan marriage.\u00a0 When I was in college, I had thought about going to law school.\u00a0 That was my vocational plan.\u00a0 The reason it was my vocational plan is because, when I was in the sixth grade, I watched Perry Mason; and I thought, \u201cMan, if in an hour, you can just argue people till they break down, and cry, and confess things, that\u2019s what I want to do for a living.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, in the ninth grade, I actually got a little more noble purpose when my social studies teacher talked about pro bono lawyers who help people in impoverished areas deal with their legal issues.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI want to help the poor.\u201d\u00a0 So that was my vocational goal.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy cousin-in-law, who was a lawyer, told me, \u201cWhen you go to undergrad school, you should study something that is simple and you think you\u2019ll get good grades in because they just want people who got good grades.\u201d\u00a0 So, I said, \u201cRadio would be simple, and I think I could get decent grades and wouldn\u2019t have to do a whole lot of work.\u201d\u00a0 In fact, I graduated and I took a summer job at a local radio station, in between undergrad and graduate school.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe middle of the summer job, they came to me and they said, \u201cWould you like to stay on?\u00a0 We\u2019ll give you an extra $100 a month.\u201d\u00a0 It was a bump from $750 a month to $850 a month.\u00a0 \u201cYeah; yeah, baby.\u201d\u00a0 So I said, \u201cWell, I can\u2019t turn down the money.\u201d\u00a0 Actually, I was having such a great time doing it, I thought, \u201cIf I don\u2019t do law school, I may never do it, but then,\u201d I said, \u201cI can always kind of do lawyering avocationally in my marriage relationship.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what I wound up doing.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 When we have conflict, I just call my wife to the stand and cross-examine her.\u00a0 That did not work out so well, anyway.\u00a0 I tell you all of that because, in undergraduate school, I decided I was going to look around for what law school I wanted to go to.\u00a0 One of the law schools that came up on my radar screen was Pepperdine; but when I went with these buddies of mine out to California, one of my buddies knew a family that lived in Pasadena who said we could stay with them.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cThat\u2019s great.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t know these people at all.\u00a0 I\u2019d been a Christian for about six or seven months at this point.\u00a0 I\u2019ll never forget walking into this home in Pasadena where we were going to be staying for the next couple of days.\u00a0 I noticed that there was just something different in the atmosphere of that home.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t grow up in a Christian home.\u00a0 We were a church-going home; but the Gospel wasn\u2019t a part of our lives, and there was some tension.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dad was alcoholic; my dad was bipolar or manic-depressive\u2014is what they called it back in the day.\u00a0 He and Mom had conflict, and there were issues there.\u00a0 I walked into this home.\u00a0 I\u2019d never met these people before; and within 20 minutes of meeting them, it was like I\u2019d known them all my life.\u00a0 We were talking about stuff, and I felt free and relaxed.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cThis is different.\u00a0 There\u2019s a different atmosphere in this house.\u00a0 There\u2019s a different <em>fragrance.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, of course, you read in II Corinthians where it says, \u201cThanks be to God who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Him everywhere.\u00a0 For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.\u201d\u00a0 You could smell it in that house\u2014the fragrance of Christ in the lives of these transformed people with hospitality, and genuine caring, and love, and graciousness manifested.\u00a0 I\u2019ve never forgotten what it was like to walk into that kind of environment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow the question for us then is\u2014we look at our own homes and we would say, \u201cWhat does it smell like at your house?\u201d\u00a0 If folks walked into your house, would the fragrance of Christ be present?\u00a0 Not with the candles you have lit in the bathroom, not with how clean it is, but is the inviting atmosphere of the grace of God so present that people are overwhelmed by it as they see it in your home and in your marriage?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo people look at your marriage and see and smell the fragrance of Christ?\u00a0 Shouldn\u2019t they?\u00a0 You go, \u201cI know they <em>should<\/em>, and I don\u2019t think they always <em>do<\/em>, and I want to get there,\u201d but, \u201cHow do we get there?\u00a0 How does a marriage <em>have<\/em> the fragrance of Christ?\u00a0 What makes it distinctively Christian?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to suggest to you two things that make a marriage distinctively Christian.\u00a0 The first is that there\u2019s a different <em>purpose<\/em> for marriage than there is with the pagan.\u00a0 The second is that there\u2019s a different <em>kind of love<\/em> present in a Christian marriage than in a pagan marriage.\u00a0 Those are two <em>distinctly<\/em> different things about a Christian marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is just a little side trail; but if you\u2019re familiar with Jonathan Edwards\u2019 book, <em>Religious Affections,<\/em> you\u2019ll know that Edwards wrote that to talk about what distinguishes the evidence of true revival versus what can just be manufactured by human effort.\u00a0 The first Great Awakening was under attack from people who thought that the religious enthusiasm that was being expressed in these New England churches was a little improper; and they were saying, \u201cThat\u2019s just human manufacturing.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEdwards wrote <em>Religious Affections, <\/em>in a way, to say, \u201cYou know, there are some things that can be manufactured.\u201d\u00a0 How loud you sing has nothing to do with whether the Spirit is working in your life.\u00a0 There are all kinds of things that can come out of the human life; but I will tell you that, in your spiritual life and in your marriage, having a different purpose, a God-centered purpose, is not something that the flesh can generate.\u00a0 No flesh generates a God-centered purpose for anything.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI will also tell you that having the kind of love that the Bible defines\u2014you don\u2019t let the culture define love, you don\u2019t let yourself define love, you have to agree to a biblical definition of love.\u00a0 Having that kind of love is impossible, apart from the transforming grace of God in your life.\u00a0 A different purpose and a different kind of love will be evidence of genuine transformation that has taken place in your lives, and in the lives of two people coming together as one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is just a little side note\u2014but as I was working on this project for <em>The Art of Marriage<\/em>, one of the things that dawned on me as I was talking with\u2014and what a privilege to be able to sit down with Al Mohler and Russell Moore at Southern Seminary, and to talk with Voddie Baucham, and to talk with Dr. Harvey, and to talk with Paul David Tripp\u2014all these guys\u2014but as we were talking about it, here is the epiphany that I had.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf I were to ask you, \u201cWhat is the crowning point of God\u2019s creation?\u00a0 What is the pinnacle of God\u2019s creation?\u201d\u00a0 I would have answered that question six months ago by saying, \u201cIt is mankind.\u00a0 Humankind is the pinnacle of God\u2019s creation.\u00a0 At the end of everything, He created His greatest masterpiece.\u00a0 He put His soul in the man and the woman, and they are the pinnacle of creation.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, I kept reading in Genesis 2; and you know what it says?\u00a0 After He created the man and the woman what did He do?\u00a0 He married them; and the two became what?\u2014one flesh.\u00a0 I want to propose to you that marriage is actually the final masterpiece of creation\u2014that the two becoming one is when God is done.\u00a0 The very next thing that happens is the attack of the serpent, dividing the man and the woman, and causing them, as they rebel against God, to be alienated from one another.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs soon as we say that, I have to make sure you understand that does not mean that single people are second class.\u00a0 I hope I don\u2019t have to go through a whole theology of singleness.\u00a0 Single people are called by God into a special season of singleness.\u00a0 I remember talking to Elisabeth Elliot; and I said, \u201cYou know, most people, when they come up to you, they say, \u2018Do you think I have the gift of singleness?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe said, \u201cWell, I ask them a question when they ask me that.\u00a0 I ask them, \u2018Are you single?\u2019\u00a0 And they say, \u2018Yes;\u2019 and I say, \u2018Well, then, you have the gift of singleness.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 She says, \u201cAnd they want to know, \u2018Yes, but am I <em>always <\/em>going to have it?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 And she says, \u201cI don\u2019t know!\u00a0 Nobody knows, except God; but <em>today<\/em> you have the gift of singleness.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, back to having a different <em>purpose<\/em> for marriage\u2014when I got married, I did not have a noble, godly, biblical purpose for my marriage.\u00a0 I talked to a friend of mine.\u00a0 I said, \u201cIf you were going to share verses on marriage with young couples and you weren\u2019t going to use Ephesians 5 and 1 Peter 3, what verses would you share?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI would share the verse that I proposed with.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cPsalm 34:3, \u2018O magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt His name together.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was not what I was thinking when I proposed to Mary Ann.\u00a0 I\u2019m guessing that some of you in this room were not thinking, \u201cO magnify the Lord with me and let us exalt His name together.\u201d\u00a0 Here\u2019s what I was thinking\u2014I was thinking that somebody had told me, \u201cIf you want a truly happy marriage, it needs to have Jesus at the center.\u201d\u00a0 So, I was thinking, \u201cOkay, I want a truly happy marriage.\u00a0 We need to have Jesus at the center, whatever that means.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s about as far as it went.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we were putting this <em>Art of Marriage<\/em> project together, we asked our filmmaker friend in New Orleans to go down to the French Quarter.\u00a0 Before he went to the French Quarter, we asked him to go back to the park and to talk to kids about marriage; and then go down on the French Quarter and talk to people, walking along the French Quarter, and just ask them what their thoughts are on marriage.\u00a0 Just watch this clip, if we can.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI don\u2019t know.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cUmmm\u2014because they want kids\u2014\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI think most people get married because love is a really strong feeling; and marriage is a way\u2014to like\u2014show that, I guess.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cA lot of people think it\u2019s good.\u00a0 Some people think it\u2019s strange.\u00a0 I\u2019d love to feel it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cAre you crazy?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI hate boys.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIf I will marry, I will be good.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThey usually care about each other, and they usually smile at each other and hold hands.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI\u2019d like to feel it about someone who makes me happy, who makes me smile, who knows the right things to say, and even if he messes up, he does it in the right way.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThe other person likes them; and they like them, too.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cYou\u2019ll see one day that they\u2019ll peek at each other when my mom\u2019s making breakfast and they smile, or they say goodbye when my dad has to go to work.\u00a0 They just give you this warm feeling when you see them do those little things that make you feel what they\u2019re feeling.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIt makes me feel happy that I\u2019m in a family that loves each other, and that my parents love each other, and I\u2019m fortunate.\u00a0 It makes me feel loved and want to love everyone else.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPeople get married because they want to spend the rest of their lives with each other.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When we start talking to the grownups, you get a whole different perspective.\u00a0 The kids have this lofty ideal of what they want marriage to be, and then the grownups have the reality of what\u2019s going on.\u00a0 There\u2019s still a longing; there\u2019s still a desire, but the reality has set in.\u00a0 They\u2019re thinking like most people in the culture are thinking.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what people are thinking\u2014when they get married, here\u2019s the kind of purpose they have in mind for marriage:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWell, we\u2019re just in love.\u00a0 We have these strong feelings for one another, so I guess that\u2019s what you do.\u201d\u00a0 Of course, they have no idea what real love is.\u00a0 They think it\u2019s somebody feeling special about you.\u00a0 Or they think, \u201cWe\u2019ve dated long enough.\u00a0 Time to fish or cut bait.\u201d\u00a0 Or they\u2019ll go, \u201cI\u2019m getting married because there are economic benefits,\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019m getting married because then you can have legitimate, guilt-free sex,\u201d or, \u201cI\u2019m getting married because you get food, and housekeeping, and laundry, all rolled into one.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is honestly what some people are thinking; right?\u00a0 Or, \u201cI\u2019m getting married because it will cure my loneliness.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the big ones; and by the way, some of the loneliest people I know are married.\u00a0 Some people will get married because the clock is ticking and, \u201cI have to start a family pretty soon.\u00a0 So, I\u2019d better find <em>somebody<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 Some will get married because they want to get their parents off their back.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome get married because they want to escape a bad situation, like abusive parents.\u00a0 Some get married because they want to fix a bad situation, like they\u2019re pregnant.\u00a0 Most people, who are getting married, including me when I got married, are getting married for self-centered, not God-centered purposes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason is because they are self-centered, not God-centered people.\u00a0 You understand how that works; right?\u00a0 When you are at the center of your universe, then your motivation for marriage is not to lay down your life for another person.\u00a0 It\u2019s to feel better, to get whatever benefits accrue to you.\u00a0 I like the way that Bill Gillham said it.\u00a0 He said, \u201cWhen kids are little, they draw a circle around their lives and declare themselves \u2018Lord of the Ring.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s true. That\u2019s the universal human condition.\u00a0 We are self-centered; and so our self-centered tendency, carried into marriage, creates two self-centered people trying to negotiate enough <em>good<\/em> out of this deal so that they can co-exist.\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s why we have to pull back and say our purpose really is defined, not by what our desires are, but our purpose is designed by what the Designer had in mind.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you try to make your marriage be something different than a vehicle through which God is glorified, a vehicle through which people can smell the aroma of Christ, a demonstration of the Gospel to the world\u2014that is the fundamental highest purpose for why you exist and for why marriage exists.\u00a0 When you try to make marriage about your happiness or your satisfaction, you\u2019re trying to make a bicycle into a motorcycle.\u00a0 That\u2019s not what it was made to be.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, is there companionship that comes along with it?\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Is there sex that comes into the deal?\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I\u2019m glad for these things.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that it all has to be, \u201cWell, we can\u2019t have any fun because we have to be about glorifying God.\u201d\u00a0 No.\u00a0 We magnify the Lord together.\u00a0 But if we don\u2019t have a fundamentally different purpose for marriage, where the two of us look together and say, \u201cLook, this isn\u2019t about us.\u00a0 This is about putting the Gospel on display to a watching world, and how we relate to one another says something about Jesus.\u00a0 Do we want it to say the right thing or the wrong thing?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen folks can get that perspective, it\u2019s a paradigm-changing perspective.\u00a0 Paul Tripp says it this way, and I think this is so good.\u00a0 He said, \u201cWe were made to live upward and outward,\u201d but most of us live inward.\u00a0 When we can quit living inward and start living upward and outward, life changes.\u00a0 When our marriage can be about upward and outward, things change.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>[Studio]\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ve been listening to a message given by co-host here, Bob Lepine.\u00a0 He enjoyed that;
