As a fashion model, who was also a follower of Christ, Rachel Carter had boundaries established, things she would do and things she wouldn\u2019t do.\u00a0 Some of her friends challenged her on whether those boundaries were tight enough, but Rachel says she was fine with where she had drawn the line.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had always kind of stood behind the verse that says that, \u201cMan looks on the outward appearance, God looks on the heart.\u201d\u00a0 I would justify.\u00a0 \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 You can judge me all you want, but God sees my heart.\u00a0 Ha, ha, ha.\u00a0 God knows my heart.\u201d\u00a0 I hid behind that; and all of a sudden, I began to see my heart\u2014see the pride in my heart.\u00a0 I felt shame for the first time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I prayed about this decision, I knew God was showing me, \u201cI don\u2019t want you to model this anymore.\u00a0 I <em>never<\/em> wanted think you need to ask our guest this week one of your trademark questions\u2014that dinner time question that you roll out on the table.\u00a0 When you\u2019re having dinner with a group of people, you have a favorite question to ask; don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think you ought to toss that her direction and just see how she\u2019d answer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, let me introduce her to the audience, first; and\u00a0 I have another question I want to ask her before we get to\u2014I\u2019ve kind of asked her several gritty questions here on the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRachel Carter joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Rachel, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She\u2019s written a book called <em>Fashioned by Faith<\/em>.\u00a0 She has been a model for more than 20 years.\u00a0 She is a mom of two, and she and her husband, Daryl, live in North Carolina.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI met Rachel\u2014here\u2019s where I wanted to go here, Bob\u2014I met Rachel last year on the <em>Love Like You Mean It Cruise\u00ae.<\/em>\u00a0 As we\u2019re somewhere in the Caribbean, she comes up at the end of one of the sessions that we have\u2014have a number of speakers who speak at these cruises.\u00a0 She was among the 2,300 people.\u00a0 You and your husband, Daryl; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She said, \u201cI\u2019d really like to be on your broadcast.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 She gave me her book; and I said, \u201cReally?\u201d\u00a0 Then, she got to know some friends of ours here at FamilyLife, and we got to know her.\u00a0 Here she is on the broadcast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to know, \u201cWhat did you think of the cruise?\u00a0 Did you guys enjoy it?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, normally, when we make <em>major<\/em> decisions financially, Daryl and I discuss them.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t discuss anything on that; we just went and signed up for next year.\u00a0 It was just like we\u2019re\u2014it was amazing!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you\u2019ve already signed up for the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 We\u2019ll see you in February.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You shared with us the book that you\u2019d written, <em>Fashioned by Faith<\/em>, talked a little bit about your testimony; and we thought, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 Your story is something that our listeners would appreciate hearing.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s been borne out this week.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that leads me to my gritty\u2014my next gritty question for you, Rachel.\u00a0 Alright, are you ready for this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m ready.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What is, in all of your life, the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 When I was in Bible college, I began to pray about what God would have me to do after this stint here\u2014learning His Word.\u00a0 As I began to pray about it, I felt Him leading me back into the industry.\u00a0 What He laid on my heart was, \u201cRachel, those people need Jesus, too.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to go back.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, He had prepared me to be able to go back into the industry with a whole different mission, a whole different mindset\u2014that the industry would be my ministry.\u00a0 So, I did.\u00a0 I obeyed, and I went back into the industry to be able to share Christ and be able to stand for convictions that He had given me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This had been an industry that had eroded your faith before\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019d spent a year and a half in New York as a model, and your faith had kind of washed away.\u00a0 God had done a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Resurrected.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014a resurrecting-work in your life.\u00a0 You\u2019d now spent\u2014what?\u2014a couple of years at Bible college?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, now, God\u2019s saying, \u201cBack to New York\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, actually, London.\u00a0 I moved to London.\u00a0 When I went, I had all of these set of guidelines\u2014things that I would and would not model.\u00a0 I was going to stick to it, and it was just no way around it; but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let\u2019s talk about that for a moment.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What were your boundaries?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 No alcohol, no cigarettes, nothing nude, nothing partial nude, nothing see-through, nothing perverse, nothing subliminal, nothing homosexual.\u00a0 Notice in that list, I did not mention that I wouldn\u2019t do lingerie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 That caused you a problem, especially as you began to establish your new ministry, Modeling Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 So, I\u2019m very excited about starting this ministry, Modeling Christ\u2014being able to share in churches as a speaker, telling the world about what God had done in the industry in me and through me, and being able to just go and do my thing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to my pastor for an endorsement.\u00a0 I said, \u201cPastor Snow, I would like for you to be able to say something really nice about me and about Modeling Christ.\u201d\u00a0 He looked at me; and he said, \u201cWhat about this thing that you do\u2014this lingerie\u2014that you model?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s embarrassing!\u00a0 You know, for your pastor to say that to you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because, at that point, you were doing lingerie modeling?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had done some lingerie.\u00a0 What it was\u2014was something that you would see in a typical Sunday paper.\u00a0 I <em>reasoned <\/em>that, \u201cYou know, even Christian women wear lingerie.\u00a0 What\u2019s wrong with a Christian modeling the lingerie?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, he questioned me about this.\u00a0 We began this dialogue about why this was probably not the best thing for me to do.\u00a0 As I talked to him and as I came back with an answer, he said, \u201cRachel.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cListen, I <em>know<\/em> what you are doing is not provocative in your mind; but I just want to let you know that a lot of the men that I counsel come into my office, and they are struggling with pornography.\u201d\u00a0 As he said that\u2014when he said that word, I became <em>very<\/em> angry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cWait!\u00a0 I am <em>not<\/em> modeling pornography.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI understand.\u00a0 I understand where you are coming from, but please understand that men and women are created so differently.\u00a0 A lot of the time, men come into my office.\u00a0 They are struggling; but they got their start, their introduction, by looking at an ad in a typical Sunday paper.\u201d\u00a0 That floored me!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said\u2014what I\u2019m hearing is that, now, I have the potential to <em>aid<\/em> in someone\u2019s sin and someone\u2019s falling in pornography.\u00a0 Well, I told him, I said, \u201cWell, I\u2019m just going to pray about this.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cThat\u2019s good.\u201d\u00a0 I went away, and I began to pray.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had always kind of stood behind the verse that says that, \u201cMan looks on the outward appearance; God looks on the heart.\u201d\u00a0 I would justify, \u201cYou sudden, I began to see my heart\u2014see the pride, the entitlement, and the justification in my heart.\u00a0 I felt shame for the first time as I prayed about this decision.\u00a0 I knew God was showing me, \u201cI don\u2019t want you to model this anymore.\u00a0 I <em>never <\/em>wanted you to model this.\u00a0 This is where I want you to draw the line.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had to go to my agent, at that time, and say, \u201cOkay, you know I don\u2019t do dot, dot, dot, dot, dot; but also, I want you to add to my list of don\u2019ts\u2014I also don\u2019t model lingerie.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cRachel, this is really going to affect your income.\u00a0 This is triple rate\u201d\u2014is what lingerie pay is\u2014\u201ctriple your rate.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cI know that, but I just have to draw this line.\u00a0 I cannot do it anymore.\u00a0 This is just where it is.\u201d\u00a0 They said, \u201cOkay, that\u2019s fine.\u201d\u00a0 Right after that, I was on a job.\u00a0 I was just going to be modeling tops, and blouses, and trousers, and just\u2014the demographic is like 45- to 65-year-old women.\u00a0 So, they book a 30-year-old model.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that funny?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m modeling these things\u2014except the woman comes out and she says, \u201cHey, you know what?\u00a0 We have a make-up shot that we need to do that we missed from yesterday.\u00a0 The model had to leave, but we have this shot.\u00a0 We need you to make-up.\u201d\u00a0 So, I say to her, \u201cWell, I don\u2019t model lingerie.\u201d\u00a0 Well, instead of respecting my position, like my agency did, she was angry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy agent called me on my cell.\u00a0 She said, \u201cRachel, listen.\u00a0 I know we\u2019ve had this conversation; but I mean, she says it\u2019s not provocative or anything.\u00a0 Would you please?\u00a0 Could you please just model the bra?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cPam, if my morals were for sale, I\u2019d be a prostitute.\u201d\u00a0 That was the end of it.\u00a0 She said, \u201cOkay, I\u2019ll tell her.\u201d\u00a0 That was the end.\u00a0 I got dropped.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t get paid.\u00a0 The client never had me back.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was fearful, then, that my agent was going to drop me; but I knew I had to draw that line in the sand.\u00a0 All the while I\u2019m making this decision and as God gave me the words to say that to her, I\u2019m thinking, \u201cI\u2019m going to get dropped.\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to be able to provide for my family.\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to be able to have this career.\u00a0 My reputation is going to be ruined in this business for costing agents money, costing clients money.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll in that moment, I had to make that decision; and it wasn\u2019t <em>my<\/em> courage that I was able to say that.\u00a0 That was God\u2014just said, \u201cHoney, you are weak, but I am strong.\u00a0 Watch out!\u201d\u00a0 He gave me the words to say.\u00a0 From that point on, that was my standard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking of three things that I want to say about your story there.\u00a0 First of all, Psalm 119, verse 9 through 11 says, \u201cHow can a young man [or a young lady] keep his [or her way] pure?\u00a0 By keeping it according to Thy word.\u00a0 With all my heart, I have sought Thee; do not let me wander from Your commandments.\u00a0 Thy word, I have treasured in my heart that I may not sin against Thee.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou just spent some time at a Bible college.\u00a0 You had the Word of God in your heart, and that gave you the conviction to be able to stand firm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecond thing I want to say is, \u201cGood for that pastor\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014that he was a man of courage, himself.\u00a0 He had enough grit in his own soul to look you in the eye and push back and ask you some tough questions.\u00a0 Where would you be today if he hadn\u2019t?\u00a0 It\u2019d be interesting to know.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 His courage really changed the course of your life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, third, I\u2019m just thinking of you today, Rachel, and some will hear your story and they\u2019ll go, \u201cHow could she have done that?\u00a0 How could she have been doing that?\u201d\u00a0 Well, you know what?\u00a0 We are all very much in process.\u00a0 We are all saved by grace, and we\u2019re all a mess of sin\u2014dysfunctional before God.\u00a0 He is in the process of cleaning up our mess and moving us to conviction after conviction in our lifetimes.\u00a0 Good for you that you heard, you were teachable, and you stepped up in that moment to do what God wanted you to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did it have the kind of effect on your career that you were concerned it might have?\u00a0 Did your agent go, \u201cLook, we\u2019ll call you if we need you; but you\u2019re too much of a problem?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t have blamed them if they would have said that to me, but they saw that God obviously was blessing my career.\u00a0 Every time I made money; they made money.\u00a0 So, they held on to me; and I am so grateful for them for that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt wasn\u2019t long after that, that I had an opportunity to go to Greece.\u00a0 When I got there, now having those new-found convictions\u2014of all the things that I didn\u2019t do and now add that to the list\u2014that I\u2019m not going to do this either\u2014my agent, at that time, looked at me and she said, \u201cRachel, you won\u2019t work.\u00a0 You won\u2019t work.\u201d\u00a0 So, I had to make a decision.\u00a0 Part of that was, \u201cOkay, Rachel, think about this.\u201d\u00a0 I have the Devil whispering, \u201cNobody is going to see what you do in Greece.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, we\u2019re talking, \u201cNobody over in America is going to see anything you do.\u00a0 It\u2019s not going to be that big of a deal.\u00a0 This is Europe.\u00a0 This is the way it is here; the culture is here.\u201d\u00a0 You can pick a fashion magazine in Europe and most of the time, they aren\u2019t even wearing fashion.\u00a0 They can go nude and model this watch.\u00a0 It\u2019s just the way it is in Europe.\u00a0 I could have justified these things; but I said, \u201cI can\u2019t.\u00a0 This is where my line is drawn.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat is amazing about that\u2014by the time I left Greece, I had worked more than any other model and I had made more money than the other models.\u00a0 I had more tear sheets to put in my portfolio, more ads that I\u2019d done for magazines to put in my portfolio than anybody else either.\u00a0 That was not because of my appearance, that wasn\u2019t because of anything that I did, it wasn\u2019t because of my book, or it wasn\u2019t because of a certain agency\u2014that was God.\u00a0 That\u2019s when I developed the slogan, \u201cGod is my booker.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI will say that it reminded me of how Daniel in Chapter 1, verse 8\u2014says that Daniel purposed in his heart not to defile his body.\u00a0 I made a decision there in another country; so, did Daniel.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe made a decision in another country, where maybe some of the Israelites where he came from might not have ever known some of the decisions that he would make\u2014maybe they would never have known that he ate that meat that could have been sacrificed to idols, or it may have been not slain according to the Mosaic law, or he could have drank that wine\u2014but he made a decision because he knew that God was looking.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEventually, Chapter 2 rolls around; and Nebuchadnezzar raises this guy, this teen boy, to second in the kingdom.\u00a0 He has this entire province.\u00a0 God <em>blessed<\/em> him because he drew his line, he stood by his convictions; and he did exactly what God called him to do.\u00a0 When God reminded me of that, I thought, \u201cYou know, this just goes to show how the Word of God is the same yesterday, today, and forever.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Interesting thing is\u2014here you\u2019re in an industry where its standards and your standards are almost at opposite ends of the spectrum\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We hear from moms and dads at prom time.\u00a0 \u201cThere is no way we can buy a prom dress anywhere in the store for our daughter because there is nothing!\u00a0 We\u2019ve looked at 50.\u00a0 We\u2019ve looked at 100 prom dresses.\u00a0 There are none that are modest.\u201d\u00a0 So, with that in mind\u2014and it\u2019s prom season\u2014what does a mom or a dad do?\u00a0 Say, \u201cHere is a burlap sack and have fun\u201d?\u00a0 What do you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I think you have to just get really creative.\u00a0 It might mean that you have to visit a seamstress and add some straps to that strapless gown, or you might need to sew up the back or sew up the slit because it is coming way up above her leg.\u00a0 You know, get that thing down to just above the knee.\u00a0 You can do it with a needle and thread.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t, you can take it to a local seamstress or your drycleaners; and they can do it for you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The person who says, \u201cOkay, those are your standards; they are not my standards.\u00a0 We all have to work it out for ourselves.\u201d\u00a0 What do you say?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re right.\u00a0 I think we do all have to come to that, but you need to come to a place where you ask God, \u201cWhat is acceptable in Your sight?\u201d\u00a0 The way I did it was when I developed the book\u2014I wanted to come up with some guidelines\u2014not rules because I don\u2019t want this to seem legalistic, not something that is like, \u201cThis is a hard and fast rule that has to be followed.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think you really need to search your heart; and it starts with the heart, not the hemline\u2014about why modesty is important, how it affects other people, how it affects your reputation, how it affects your testimony, how it affects your church, the people around you, and the guys that you\u2019re around.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I began to introduce that concept to other guys and ask them, \u201cWhat are some triggers for you?\u00a0 What are the things that make your mind wander?\u00a0 When you see something that is immodest, how are some ways that you would talk to these girls and say, \u2018This is what it does to me.\u00a0 This is what it does to your reputation.\u2019\u00a0 What would you say to these girls?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs these guys began to write out in their own voice\u2014and it\u2019s in the book\u2014nine different boys from all over the country that began to write about what modesty means to them\u2014that voice carries so much weight because it shows that modesty or immodesty not only affects you and what you see in the mirror; it is a global thing.\u00a0 It affects everybody that sees you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, Rachel, I\u2019m going to ask you to take off your \u201ccareer hat\u201d of being a model and put on your \u201cmom hat\u201d.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Love that hat.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your son\u2014yes, it\u2019s a good one.\u00a0 Someday, your sons are going to go to prom, like Bob\u2019s talking about.\u00a0 Let\u2019s say one or both of them arrive at your house with young ladies who are dressed in strapless evening gowns\u2014immodest, inappropriate prom dress.\u00a0 What are you going to do as a mom?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, I would cringe.\u00a0 I think that before that even were to happen, I would have to talk with her parents and give them my book.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 \u201cCould you have your daughter read this first?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you would say something then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I think I would need to because if she\u2019s there, and she\u2019s there with my son\u2014she obviously wants to impress my son.\u00a0 \u201cIf you\u2019re going to try to impress my son, this is going to be the way to his heart.\u00a0 It\u2019s not going to be by showing a bunch of cleavage and your thigh--in your evening gown.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s what girls need to realize because, you know, I\u2019m not a guy; I\u2019m not wired like a guy.\u00a0 It\u2019s difficult to tell a girl, \u201cThis is the way it is,\u201d when they don\u2019t understand it.\u00a0 We don\u2019t get it, unless a guy can explain it to us.\u00a0 So, what a girl can see\u2014this is what a really good guy that loves the Lord\u2014this is what he is saying; he is saying, \u201cCover it up.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSeth, in Chapter 1, says, \u201cThe world says, \u2018If you have it, flaunt it,\u2019\u201d and we\u2019re saying, \u201cIf you have it, protect it.\u201d\u00a0 What a great piece of advice that a girl needs to hear and how the kind of girl that these guys would look for would not be a kind of girl that would be dressed provocatively.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What do you do, though, when you live in Arkansas or North Carolina and it is \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t95 degrees every day, all summer long.\u00a0 For that matter, if you\u2019re going to\u2014you had to think\u2014maybe you didn\u2019t have to think about this, maybe it\u2019s just no different one day from another\u2014but here you are coming to talk to Dennis Rainey on the radio about modesty.\u00a0 Did you think, \u201cGee, what should I wear?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I didn\u2019t\u2014I mean, I could have picked anything in my closet, and it would have been appropriate.\u00a0 It would have been fine.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because it doesn\u2019t matter where you\u2019re going to be or what you\u2019re going to do, you\u2019re going to look the same?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 For instance, with shorts\u2014if I\u2019m going to buy shorts, I\u2019m going to buy fingertip-length shorts.\u00a0 That means, when I stand up straight and I put my hands down to my side, where my longest finger comes, is where the shortest my shorts can be.\u00a0 I know that because when I sit down, my shorts are going to rise.\u00a0 Those are long enough to be able to still protect me and protect my modesty.\u00a0 So, any pair of shorts that I would be able to wear, I know that they have to be fingertip length.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf it\u2019s a skirt, I have certain standards for that, as well.\u00a0 Same thing with tops, blouses, pants, jeans\u2014you name it.\u00a0 What I did\u2014I wasn\u2019t just kind of coming up with things out of my head.\u00a0 I prayed about these things.\u00a0 Then, I interviewed guys.\u00a0 Then, I talked to my husband about it.\u00a0 The more I started developing these guidelines\u2014people would ask questions, and I would pray about.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI developed an entire list of things that I feel like are important because we move in different situations.\u00a0 We move in different positions all the time.\u00a0 I don\u2019t just stand straight.\u00a0 I might sit down, I might raise my hands, I might cross my arms, I might cross my legs, sit Indian-style\u2014whatever it is, and your clothing should be there to cover you in any way that you move.\u00a0 That\u2019s why, when you put on an outfit, you need to move in all those different ways to see if you\u2019re still covered.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did kind of the leg work for these girls.\u00a0 They can see, \u201cIf you do this, you\u2019re going to be covered in all these ways.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I used to say to my daughters, \u201cAre you going to turn heads, or are you going to turn hearts?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 A young man is so wired; it\u2019s really easy to turn his head.\u00a0 The thing is\u2014if you catch a young man with your body, then, you just need to realize that\u2019s who you caught.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s the young man who\u2019s coming after you.\u00a0 I\u2019m not talking about you need to hide to such a degree you can\u2019t tell whether it\u2019s a male or a female.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m not talking about that.\u00a0 There is a way to dress that is modest and is appropriate.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got one last question I want to ask you.\u00a0 I\u2019ve asked you some really gritty ones.\u00a0 Here\u2019s another one, \u201cAre you afraid of aging?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s something that I have to keep going back to, remind myself that I\u2019m not created to just be this model and to wear somebody else\u2019s clothes; but that I\u2019m created to be able to invest in other people\u2019s lives and to be able to glorify the Lord.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t care if I\u2019m sagging or wrinkled, and all of that because it\u2019s already begun.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Some of that\u2019s already happened, and that\u2019s okay.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to just\u2014just like any woman, I\u2019m not beyond that.\u00a0 I still have to keep going back and reminding myself.\u00a0 I have a <em>great <\/em>husband who loves me as I am.\u00a0 When I complain in the mirror and say, \u201cWhat about this?\u00a0 What if this?\u00a0 I need to get this tweaked and fixed.\u201d\u00a0 No, he just reminds me how much he loves me.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 He\u2019s the only one that matters.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In the end, 1 Peter 3:4 is what really matters; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is the beauty, the inner beauty, that God cares more about because, \u201cCharm is deceitful, beauty is vain\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014\u201cbut a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It says in that same chapter, in Proverbs 31 that, \u201cShe looks at the future and smiles.\u201d\u00a0 She has hope in her heart because her life is not built around the physical side of life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRachel, I appreciate you integrity, your honesty.\u00a0 I just think a lot of parents are going to want to get this book and pass it on to their daughters.\u00a0 It wouldn\u2019t even hurt to have a good conversation or two with their sons as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks for joining was also a follower of Christ, Rachel Carter had boundaries established, things she would do and things she wouldn\u2019t do.\u00a0 Some of her friends challenged her on whether those boundaries were tight enough, but Rachel says she was fine with where she had drawn the line.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had always kind of stood behind the verse that says that, \u201cMan looks on the outward appearance, God looks on the heart.\u201d\u00a0 I would justify.\u00a0 \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 You can judge me all you want, but God sees my heart.\u00a0 Ha, ha, ha.\u00a0 God knows my heart.\u201d\u00a0 I hid behind that; and all of a sudden, I began to see my heart\u2014see the pride in my heart.\u00a0 I felt shame for the first time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I prayed about this decision, I knew God was showing me, \u201cI don\u2019t want you to model this anymore.\u00a0 I <em>never<\/em> wanted you to model this.\u00a0 to ask; don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think you ought to toss that her direction and just see how she\u2019d answer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, let me introduce her to the audience, first; and\u00a0 I have another question I want to ask her before we get to\u2014I\u2019ve kind of asked her several gritty questions here on the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRachel Carter joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Rachel, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She\u2019s written a book called <em>Fashioned by Faith<\/em>.\u00a0 She has been a model for more than 20 years.\u00a0 She is a mom of two, and she and her husband, Daryl, live in North Carolina.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI met Rachel\u2014here\u2019s where I wanted to go here, Bob\u2014I met Rachel last year on the <em>Love Like You Mean It Cruise\u00ae.<\/em>\u00a0 As we\u2019re somewhere in the Caribbean, she comes up at the end of one of the sessions that we have\u2014have a number of speakers who speak at these cruises.\u00a0 She was among the 2,300 people.\u00a0 You and your husband, Daryl; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She said, \u201cI\u2019d really like to be on your broadcast.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 She gave me her book; and I said, \u201cReally?\u201d\u00a0 Then, she got to know some friends of ours here at FamilyLife, and we got to know her.\u00a0 Here she is on the broadcast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to know, \u201cWhat did you think of the cruise?\u00a0 Did you guys enjoy it?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, normally, when we make <em>major<\/em> decisions financially, Daryl and I discuss them.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t discuss anything on that; we just went and signed up for next year.\u00a0 It was just like we\u2019re\u2014it was amazing!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you\u2019ve already signed up for the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 We\u2019ll see you in February.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You shared with us the book that you\u2019d written, <em>Fashioned by Faith<\/em>, talked a little bit about your testimony; and we thought, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 Your story is something that our listeners would appreciate hearing.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s been borne out this week.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that leads me to my gritty\u2014my next gritty question for you, Rachel.\u00a0 Alright, are you ready for this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m ready.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What is, in all of your life, the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 When I was in Bible college, I began to pray about what God would have me to do after this stint here\u2014learning His Word.\u00a0 As I began to pray about it, I felt Him leading me back into the industry.\u00a0 What He laid on my heart was, \u201cRachel, those people need Jesus, too.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to go back.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, He had prepared me to be able to go back into the industry with a whole different mission, a whole different mindset\u2014that the industry would be my ministry.\u00a0 So, I did.\u00a0 I obeyed, and I went back into the industry to be able to share Christ and be able to stand for convictions that He had given me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This had been an industry that had eroded your faith before\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019d spent a year and a half in New York as a model, and your faith had kind of washed away.\u00a0 God had done a\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Resurrected.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014a resurrecting-work in your life.\u00a0 You\u2019d now spent\u2014what?\u2014a couple of years at Bible college?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, now, God\u2019s saying, \u201cBack to New York\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, actually, London.\u00a0 I moved to London.\u00a0 When I went, I had all of these set of guidelines\u2014things that I would and would not model.\u00a0 I was going to stick to it, and it was just no way around it; but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let\u2019s talk about that for a moment.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What were your boundaries?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 No alcohol, no cigarettes, nothing nude, nothing partial nude, nothing see-through, nothing perverse, nothing subliminal, nothing homosexual.\u00a0 Notice in that list, I did not mention that I wouldn\u2019t do lingerie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 That caused you a problem, especially as you began to establish your new ministry, Modeling Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 So, I\u2019m very excited about starting this ministry, Modeling Christ\u2014being able to share in churches as a speaker, telling the world about what God had done in the industry in me and through me, and being able to just go and do my thing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to my pastor for an endorsement.\u00a0 I said, \u201cPastor Snow, I would like for you to be able to say something really nice about me and about Modeling Christ.\u201d\u00a0 He looked at me; and he said, \u201cWhat about this thing that you do\u2014this lingerie\u2014that you model?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s embarrassing!\u00a0 You know, for your pastor to say that to you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because, at that point, you were doing lingerie modeling?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had done some lingerie.\u00a0 What it was\u2014was something that you would see in a typical Sunday paper.\u00a0 I <em>reasoned <\/em>that, \u201cYou know, even Christian women wear lingerie.\u00a0 What\u2019s wrong with a Christian modeling the lingerie?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, he questioned me about this.\u00a0 We began this dialogue about why this was probably not the best thing for me to do.\u00a0 As I talked to him and as I came back with an answer, he said, \u201cRachel.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cListen, I <em>know<\/em> what you are doing is not provocative in your mind; but I just want to let you know that a lot of the men that I counsel come into my office, and they are struggling with pornography.\u201d\u00a0 As he said that\u2014when he said that word, I became <em>very<\/em> angry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cWait!\u00a0 I am <em>not<\/em> modeling pornography.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI understand.\u00a0 I understand where you are coming from, but please understand that men and women are created so differently.\u00a0 A lot of the time, men come into my office.\u00a0 They are struggling; but they got their start, their introduction, by looking at an ad in a typical Sunday paper.\u201d\u00a0 That floored me!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said\u2014what I\u2019m hearing is that, now, I have the potential to <em>aid<\/em> in someone\u2019s sin and someone\u2019s falling in pornography.\u00a0 Well, I told him, I said, \u201cWell, I\u2019m just going to pray about this.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cThat\u2019s good.\u201d\u00a0 I went away, and I began to pray.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had always kind of stood behind the verse that says that, \u201cMan looks on the outward appearance; God looks on the heart.\u201d\u00a0 I would justify, \u201cYou sudden, I began to see my heart\u2014see the pride, the entitlement, and the justification in my heart.\u00a0 I felt shame for the first time as I prayed about this decision.\u00a0 I knew God was showing me, \u201cI don\u2019t want you to model this anymore.\u00a0 I <em>never <\/em>wanted you to model this.\u00a0 This is where I want you to draw the line.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had to go to my agent, at that time, and say, \u201cOkay, you know I don\u2019t do dot, dot, dot, dot, dot; but also, I want you to add to my list of don\u2019ts\u2014I also don\u2019t model lingerie.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cRachel, this is really going to affect your income.\u00a0 This is triple rate\u201d\u2014is what lingerie pay is\u2014\u201ctriple your rate.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cI know that, but I just have to draw this line.\u00a0 I cannot do it anymore.\u00a0 This is just where it is.\u201d\u00a0 They said, \u201cOkay, that\u2019s fine.\u201d\u00a0 Right after that, I was on a job.\u00a0 I was just going to be modeling tops, and blouses, and trousers, and just\u2014the demographic is like 45- to 65-year-old women.\u00a0 So, they book a 30-year-old model.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that funny?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m modeling these things\u2014except the woman comes out and she says, \u201cHey, you know what?\u00a0 We have a make-up shot that we need to do that we missed from yesterday.\u00a0 The model had to leave, but we have this shot.\u00a0 We need you to make-up.\u201d\u00a0 So, I say to her, \u201cWell, I don\u2019t model lingerie.\u201d\u00a0 Well, instead of respecting my position, like my agency did, she was angry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy agent called me on my cell.\u00a0 She said, \u201cRachel, listen.\u00a0 I know we\u2019ve had this conversation; but I mean, she says it\u2019s not provocative or anything.\u00a0 Would you please?\u00a0 Could you please just model the bra?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cPam, if my morals were for sale, I\u2019d be a prostitute.\u201d\u00a0 That was the end of it.\u00a0 She said, \u201cOkay, I\u2019ll tell her.\u201d\u00a0 That was the end.\u00a0 I got dropped.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t get paid.\u00a0 The client never had me back.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was fearful, then, that my agent was going to drop me; but I knew I had to draw that line in the sand.\u00a0 All the while I\u2019m making this decision and as God gave me the words to say that to her, I\u2019m thinking, \u201cI\u2019m going to get dropped.\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to be able to provide for my family.\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to be able to have this career.\u00a0 My reputation is going to be ruined in this business for costing agents money, costing clients money.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll in that moment, I had to make that decision; and it wasn\u2019t <em>my<\/em> courage that I was able to say that.\u00a0 That was God\u2014just said, \u201cHoney, you are weak, but I am strong.\u00a0 Watch out!\u201d\u00a0 He gave me the words to say.\u00a0 From that point on, that was my standard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking of three things that I want to say about your story there.\u00a0 First of all, Psalm 119, verse 9 through 11 says, \u201cHow can a young man [or a young lady] keep his [or her way] pure?\u00a0 By keeping it according to Thy word.\u00a0 With all my heart, I have sought Thee; do not let me wander from Your commandments.\u00a0 Thy word, I have treasured in my heart that I may not sin against Thee.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou just spent some time at a Bible college.\u00a0 You had the Word of God in your heart, and that gave you the conviction to be able to stand firm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecond thing I want to say is, \u201cGood for that pastor\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014that he was a man of courage, himself.\u00a0 He had enough grit in his own soul to look you in the eye and push back and ask you some tough questions.\u00a0 Where would you be today if he hadn\u2019t?\u00a0 It\u2019d be interesting to know.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 His courage really changed the course of your life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, third, I\u2019m just thinking of you today, Rachel, and some will hear your story and they\u2019ll go, \u201cHow could she have done that?\u00a0 How could she have been doing that?\u201d\u00a0 Well, you know what?\u00a0 We are all very much in process.\u00a0 We are all saved by grace, and we\u2019re all a mess of sin\u2014dysfunctional before God.\u00a0 He is in the process of cleaning up our mess and moving us to conviction after conviction in our lifetimes.\u00a0 Good for you that you heard, you were teachable, and you stepped up in that moment to do what God wanted you to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did it have the kind of effect on your career that you were concerned it might have?\u00a0 Did your agent go, \u201cLook, we\u2019ll call you if we need you; but you\u2019re too much of a problem?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t have blamed them if they would have said that to me, but they saw that God obviously was blessing my career.\u00a0 Every time I made money; they made money.\u00a0 So, they held on to me; and I am so grateful for them for that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt wasn\u2019t long after that, that I had an opportunity to go to Greece.\u00a0 When I got there, now having those new-found convictions\u2014of all the things that I didn\u2019t do and now add that to the list\u2014that I\u2019m not going to do this either\u2014my agent, at that time, looked at me and she said, \u201cRachel, you won\u2019t work.\u00a0 You won\u2019t work.\u201d\u00a0 So, I had to make a decision.\u00a0 Part of that was, \u201cOkay, Rachel, think about this.\u201d\u00a0 I have the Devil whispering, \u201cNobody is going to see what you do in Greece.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, we\u2019re talking, \u201cNobody over in America is going to see anything you do.\u00a0 It\u2019s not going to be that big of a deal.\u00a0 This is Europe.\u00a0 This is the way it is here; the culture is here.\u201d\u00a0 You can pick a fashion magazine in Europe and most of the time, they aren\u2019t even wearing fashion.\u00a0 They can go nude and model this watch.\u00a0 It\u2019s just the way it is in Europe.\u00a0 I could have justified these things; but I said, \u201cI can\u2019t.\u00a0 This is where my line is drawn.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat is amazing about that\u2014by the time I left Greece, I had worked more than any other model and I had made more money than the other models.\u00a0 I had more tear sheets to put in my portfolio, more ads that I\u2019d done for magazines to put in my portfolio than anybody else either.\u00a0 That was not because of my appearance, that wasn\u2019t because of anything that I did, it wasn\u2019t because of my book, or it wasn\u2019t because of a certain agency\u2014that was God.\u00a0 That\u2019s when I developed the slogan, \u201cGod is my booker.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI will say that it reminded me of how Daniel in Chapter 1, verse 8\u2014says that Daniel purposed in his heart not to defile his body.\u00a0 I made a decision there in another country; so, did Daniel.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe made a decision in another country, where maybe some of the Israelites where he came from might not have ever known some of the decisions that he would make\u2014maybe they would never have known that he ate that meat that could have been sacrificed to idols, or it may have been not slain according to the Mosaic law, or he could have drank that wine\u2014but he made a decision because he knew that God was looking.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEventually, Chapter 2 rolls around; and Nebuchadnezzar raises this guy, this teen boy, to second in the kingdom.\u00a0 He has this entire province.\u00a0 God <em>blessed<\/em> him because he drew his line, he stood by his convictions; and he did exactly what God called him to do.\u00a0 When God reminded me of that, I thought, \u201cYou know, this just goes to show how the Word of God is the same yesterday, today, and forever.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Interesting thing is\u2014here you\u2019re in an industry where its standards and your standards are almost at opposite ends of the spectrum\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We hear from moms and dads at prom time.\u00a0 \u201cThere is no way we can buy a prom dress anywhere in the store for our daughter because there is nothing!\u00a0 We\u2019ve looked at 50.\u00a0 We\u2019ve looked at 100 prom dresses.\u00a0 There are none that are modest.\u201d\u00a0 So, with that in mind\u2014and it\u2019s prom season\u2014what does a mom or a dad do?\u00a0 Say, \u201cHere is a burlap sack and have fun\u201d?\u00a0 What do you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I think you have to just get really creative.\u00a0 It might mean that you have to visit a seamstress and add some straps to that strapless gown, or you might need to sew up the back or sew up the slit because it is coming way up above her leg.\u00a0 You know, get that thing down to just above the knee.\u00a0 You can do it with a needle and thread.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t, you can take it to a local seamstress or your drycleaners; and they can do it for you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The person who says, \u201cOkay, those are your standards; they are not my standards.\u00a0 We all have to work it out for ourselves.\u201d\u00a0 What do you say?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re right.\u00a0 I think we do all have to come to that, but you need to come to a place where you ask God, \u201cWhat is acceptable in Your sight?\u201d\u00a0 The way I did it was when I developed the book\u2014I wanted to come up with some guidelines\u2014not rules because I don\u2019t want this to seem legalistic, not something that is like, \u201cThis is a hard and fast rule that has to be followed.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think you really need to search your heart; and it starts with the heart, not the hemline\u2014about why modesty is important, how it affects other people, how it affects your reputation, how it affects your testimony, how it affects your church, the people around you, and the guys that you\u2019re around.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I began to introduce that concept to other guys and ask them, \u201cWhat are some triggers for you?\u00a0 What are the things that make your mind wander?\u00a0 When you see something that is immodest, how are some ways that you would talk to these girls and say, \u2018This is what it does to me.\u00a0 This is what it does to your reputation.\u2019\u00a0 What would you say to these girls?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs these guys began to write out in their own voice\u2014and it\u2019s in the book\u2014nine different boys from all over the country that began to write about what modesty means to them\u2014that voice carries so much weight because it shows that modesty or immodesty not only affects you and what you see in the mirror; it is a global thing.\u00a0 It affects everybody that sees you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, Rachel, I\u2019m going to ask you to take off your \u201ccareer hat\u201d of being a model and put on your \u201cmom hat\u201d.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Love that hat.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your son\u2014yes, it\u2019s a good one.\u00a0 Someday, your sons are going to go to prom, like Bob\u2019s talking about.\u00a0 Let\u2019s say one or both of them arrive at your house with young ladies who are dressed in strapless evening gowns\u2014immodest, inappropriate prom dress.\u00a0 What are you going to do as a mom?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, I would cringe.\u00a0 I think that before that even were to happen, I would have to talk with her parents and give them my book.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 \u201cCould you have your daughter read this first?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you would say something then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I think I would need to because if she\u2019s there, and she\u2019s there with my son\u2014she obviously wants to impress my son.\u00a0 \u201cIf you\u2019re going to try to impress my son, this is going to be the way to his heart.\u00a0 It\u2019s not going to be by showing a bunch of cleavage and your thigh--in your evening gown.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that\u2019s what girls need to realize because, you know, I\u2019m not a guy; I\u2019m not wired like a guy.\u00a0 It\u2019s difficult to tell a girl, \u201cThis is the way it is,\u201d when they don\u2019t understand it.\u00a0 We don\u2019t get it, unless a guy can explain it to us.\u00a0 So, what a girl can see\u2014this is what a really good guy that loves the Lord\u2014this is what he is saying; he is saying, \u201cCover it up.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSeth, in Chapter 1, says, \u201cThe world says, \u2018If you have it, flaunt it,\u2019\u201d and we\u2019re saying, \u201cIf you have it, protect it.\u201d\u00a0 What a great piece of advice that a girl needs to hear and how the kind of girl that these guys would look for would not be a kind of girl that would be dressed provocatively.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What do you do, though, when you live in Arkansas or North Carolina and it is \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t95 degrees every day, all summer long.\u00a0 For that matter, if you\u2019re going to\u2014you had to think\u2014maybe you didn\u2019t have to think about this, maybe it\u2019s just no different one day from another\u2014but here you are coming to talk to Dennis Rainey on the radio about modesty.\u00a0 Did you think, \u201cGee, what should I wear?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I didn\u2019t\u2014I mean, I could have picked anything in my closet, and it would have been appropriate.\u00a0 It would have been fine.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because it doesn\u2019t matter where you\u2019re going to be or what you\u2019re going to do, you\u2019re going to look the same?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 For instance, with shorts\u2014if I\u2019m going to buy shorts, I\u2019m going to buy fingertip-length shorts.\u00a0 That means, when I stand up straight and I put my hands down to my side, where my longest finger comes, is where the shortest my shorts can be.\u00a0 I know that because when I sit down, my shorts are going to rise.\u00a0 Those are long enough to be able to still protect me and protect my modesty.\u00a0 So, any pair of shorts that I would be able to wear, I know that they have to be fingertip length.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf it\u2019s a skirt, I have certain standards for that, as well.\u00a0 Same thing with tops, blouses, pants, jeans\u2014you name it.\u00a0 What I did\u2014I wasn\u2019t just kind of coming up with things out of my head.\u00a0 I prayed about these things.\u00a0 Then, I interviewed guys.\u00a0 Then, I talked to my husband about it.\u00a0 The more I started developing these guidelines\u2014people would ask questions, and I would pray about.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI developed an entire list of things that I feel like are important because we move in different situations.\u00a0 We move in different positions all the time.\u00a0 I don\u2019t just stand straight.\u00a0 I might sit down, I might raise my hands, I might cross my arms, I might cross my legs, sit Indian-style\u2014whatever it is, and your clothing should be there to cover you in any way that you move.\u00a0 That\u2019s why, when you put on an outfit, you need to move in all those different ways to see if you\u2019re still covered.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI did kind of the leg work for these girls.\u00a0 They can see, \u201cIf you do this, you\u2019re going to be covered in all these ways.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I used to say to my daughters, \u201cAre you going to turn heads, or are you going to turn hearts?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 A young man is so wired; it\u2019s really easy to turn his head.\u00a0 The thing is\u2014if you catch a young man with your body, then, you just need to realize that\u2019s who you caught.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s the young man who\u2019s coming after you.\u00a0 I\u2019m not talking about you need to hide to such a degree you can\u2019t tell whether it\u2019s a male or a female.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m not talking about that.\u00a0 There is a way to dress that is modest and is appropriate.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got one last question I want to ask you.\u00a0 I\u2019ve asked you some really gritty ones.\u00a0 Here\u2019s another one, \u201cAre you afraid of aging?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s something that I have to keep going back to, remind myself that I\u2019m not created to just be this model and to wear somebody else\u2019s clothes; but that I\u2019m created to be able to invest in other people\u2019s lives and to be able to glorify the Lord.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t care if I\u2019m sagging or wrinkled, and all of that because it\u2019s already begun.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Some of that\u2019s already happened, and that\u2019s okay.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to just\u2014just like any woman, I\u2019m not beyond that.\u00a0 I still have to keep going back and reminding myself.\u00a0 I have a <em>great <\/em>husband who loves me as I am.\u00a0 When I complain in the mirror and say, \u201cWhat about this?\u00a0 What if this?\u00a0 I need to get this tweaked and fixed.\u201d\u00a0 No, he just reminds me how much he loves me.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 He\u2019s the only one that matters.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In the end, 1 Peter 3:4 is what really matters; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is the beauty, the inner beauty, that God cares more about because, \u201cCharm is deceitful, beauty is vain\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014\u201cbut a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It says in that same chapter, in Proverbs 31 that, \u201cShe looks at the future and smiles.\u201d\u00a0 She has hope in her heart because her life is not built around the physical side of life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRachel, I appreciate you integrity, your honesty.\u00a0 I just think a lot of parents are going to want to get this book and pass it on to their daughters.\u00a0 It wouldn\u2019t even hurt to have a good conversation or two with their sons as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks for joining
