but\u2014(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat?\u00a0 What?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Modeling what!?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know\u2014a professional\u2014they go, and they take your picture.\u00a0 You kind of look\u2014sometimes, you have to look pouty.\u00a0 I can look pouty.\u00a0 Sometimes, you have to look happy.\u00a0 I can look happy\u2014it just sounds like easy work!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think you\u2019re doing what you need to be doing, Bob.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Don\u2019t quit my day job; huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we have Rachel Lee Carter with us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 What do you think, Rachel?\u00a0 You\u2019re a model.\u00a0 Do you think Bob ought to give up his day job?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I think you\u2019ve found your calling.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is that so?\u2014for more reasons than one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think Rachel is in politics, too.\u00a0 That was very diplomatic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, she has a career in modeling.\u00a0 She is a graduate of Word of Life and is married to Daryl\u2014two sons, lives in North Carolina.\u00a0 She has written a book called <em>Fashioned by Faith<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEarlier, I already asked a question of you, Rachel, that was kind of a gritty question right off the bat.\u00a0 I got to thinking about it, and I wanted to kind of come back to that question again and have you unpack why you answered like you did.\u00a0 I asked you the question, \u201cIf you had a daughter\u2014currently, you don\u2019t, but if you had a daughter\u2014and she said, \u2018Mommy, I\u2019d like to be a model like you,\u2019 would you encourage her to be a model?\u201d\u00a0 You answered\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, that\u2019s really interesting.\u00a0 What I want you to unpack a bit is, \u201cWhy would you not want your daughter to head in that direction?\u201d because you\u2019ve given 20 years of your life to this industry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 It came with a lot of scars, a lot of scars, including bulimia and a lot of heartbreak, a lot of really having to find my identity in something.\u00a0 I tried to find it in the mirror; and then, when that failed, I tried to find it in other things.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until I found my identity in Jesus, that now I am able to do this career.\u00a0 It\u2019s such a difficult industry to be in because it\u2019s all on outward appearance, and that is not what we are created to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy life verse is 1 Peter 3:4 which says, \u201c\u2026instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God\u2019s sight.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s very difficult to find that place when everything around you is so focused on what is external.\u00a0 I would steer her from that\u2014unless, of course, like I said, she has gone to Bible college, she knows the Word of God, she is an evangelist at heart, and she is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She dresses in Scripture verses; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right, and she is\u2014that would be\u2014and like I said, \u201cIf God called her to that business, He would also have to let her momma know.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That really leads me to a second gritty question that I was thinking about asking, as well.\u00a0 This is going to sound kind of tacky; alright?\u00a0 I\u2019m just going to establish that on the front-end.\u00a0 I\u2019m just curious as to how you would answer it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou spent most of your life\u2014adult life\u2014around the subject of modeling, and it is based upon the external.\u00a0 It\u2019s about physical appearance.\u00a0 Do you ever get <em>weary<\/em> of people relating to you around your beauty?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, very much so.\u00a0 In fact, I remember being in Bible college.\u00a0 It was a small school, but there were 14 Rachels there\u2014some Bible names\u2014so, there were a lot of Rachels.\u00a0 I was considered \u201cRachel, the model.\u201d\u00a0 I hated that!\u00a0 I was like, \u201cGosh, why can\u2019t I be \u2018Rachel, the Christian\u2019; or \u2018Rachel, the blonde\u2019; or \u2018Rachel, something else\u2019?\u201d\u00a0 I hated having that identity of just being\u2014it\u2019s just the model\u2014just the model, just the model.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Prior to that, though, if we dialed it back five years and your identity had been \u201cRachel, the model\u201d, that\u2019s what you were living for; weren\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Talk about how the idol of beauty can warp somebody\u2019s thinking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, your\u2014the idol of beauty is what is in everyone else\u2019s mind.\u00a0 So, right now, we are looking at media to establish what is beautiful\u2014whatever media happens to say, \u201cThat\u2019s what we follow.\u201d\u00a0 For a long time, it was the Cindy Crawfords\u2014it was the voluptuous\u2014it was the <em>sporty<\/em> look.\u00a0 Then, all of a sudden Kate Moss comes along, and she\u2019s five foot six; and she\u2019s skinny and \u201cwaifey\u201d and all that.\u00a0 Then, all of the sudden, that\u2019s what\u2019s beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we\u2019re always chasing what\u2019s beautiful when media can\u2019t make up their mind what is considered beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just listening to you say what you just said about beauty\u2014I\u2019m reflecting back on another conversation, Bob, you and I had with three women here in this studio, where we were talking to women about their preoccupation with the mirror.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMen have a problem with lusting after women because of sexual allurement.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of their main Achilles\u2019 heels.\u00a0 I think for women, one of their Achilles\u2019 heels, one of their temptation points, is the mirror.\u00a0 Don\u2019t you agree?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Preoccupied with, \u201cHow I look,\u201d \u201cWhat others think,\u201d \u201cHow I\u2019m doing on the beauty scale,\u201d\u2014which seems to be a very cruel standard, really.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is.\u00a0 I wonder if Eve dealt with any of that since she didn\u2019t have any media around her to tell her what was supposed to be\u2014you know, \u201cWhat\u2019s beautiful?\u201d\u00a0 I think we are just so preoccupied with what is going on in media, with Hollywood, and what people are saying is supposed to be beautiful\u2014that we try to measure ourselves up against that standard; and we can\u2019t!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>First of all, that standard is not what\u2014it\u2019s not even real.\u00a0 It is photoshopped.\u00a0 It\u2019s dealt with, and it\u2019s tweaked.\u00a0 All of these things are done to it.\u00a0 So, there\u2019s not a standard of beauty; but you\u2019re right\u2014women do, as a whole, have a preoccupation, I think, with the mirror.\u00a0 That comes from something that\u2019s deeper inside of them\u2014which, is a longing to be appreciated, accepted, loved, and adored\u2014all for her exterior.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really, the solution is back to where you found it\u2014in the person of Jesus Christ\u2014and finding your identity in Him\u2014as a sinner, deeply broken, but redeemed by the God of the universe, Who loved you enough to send His own son to die for you.\u00a0 That completely transformed your own perspective of your inner being and gave you a purpose for your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That turning point, for you, actually came as a result of some of your fellow models who began talking to you about their faith; is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That was such a God-assignment for these girls.\u00a0 I don\u2019t even know their names or where they are today, but there were two models on a job that I did in New York.\u00a0 They were sharing their faith with some other models there, and I kind of joined the group and listened.\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI told them that, \u201cYou know, I grew up that way.\u00a0 I grew up believing that same thing; but now, I\u2019m not so sure that\u2019s what I believe anymore.\u201d\u00a0 They said, \u201cWell, why?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, you know, I mean\u2014\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI shared with them how some of my other friends, \u201cThey\u2019re really great people.\u00a0 How can I look at them in the face and say, \u2018You know, you\u2019re not going to heaven\u2019?\u00a0 \u2018You\u2019re going to go to hell when you die if you die without Jesus.\u2019\u00a0 These people are more moral than I am!\u00a0 How can I defend that?\u201d I said.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m really struggling with this a lot.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was so much of the introduction of New Age religion, in the modeling industry at that time, that I kind of delved into horoscopes, and having my chart read, and all of these other things that were <em>just interesting<\/em> to me.\u00a0 So, the Devil was having such a field day with me\u2014pulling me in all different directions.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThese models said, \u201cRachel, you just need to get <em>really honest<\/em> with God.\u00a0 Just get on your face before Him, and call out to Him, and ask Him to reveal Himself to you.\u00a0 Tell Him how you feel.\u00a0 He already knows you.\u00a0 He knows your heart, and just ask Him that, \u2018If He\u2019s real, to reveal Himself to you and to come into your heart and save you.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 So, I got home that night, and I just kept thinking the same thing over and over again\u2014hearing what these girls had said to me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember just getting on my knees; and I said, \u201cI don\u2019t even know if You can hear me.\u00a0 I don\u2019t even know if You exist, but if You do, I\u2019m dying inside.\u00a0 I\u2019ve had the world by the tail.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been mingling with celebrities, and I\u2019ve been hanging out and doing all of these fashion shoots.\u00a0 It seems like life would be just absolutely wonderful, but I\u2019m <em>dying <\/em>inside.\u00a0 If You are real, will You come into my heart and save me?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had such an experience that night.\u00a0 I felt the Holy Spirit in my presence.\u00a0 I felt Him infuse me.\u00a0 I felt something completely different.\u00a0 My doubts were gone.\u00a0 Everything about the agenda that I had in life began to change.\u00a0 The music that I was listening to\u2014I went straight to my CD cabinet, and I threw out almost all of the music that I had been listening to because it was just like something turned a switch in my life that, \u201cI can\u2019t even listen to this music anymore.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe swearing that would have been coming out of my mouth stopped.\u00a0 The people that I hung around with\u2014I didn\u2019t want to be around those people anymore.\u00a0 I wanted to find a church.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t wait to find a church.\u00a0 I wanted to talk to a pastor.\u00a0 I wanted to open up God\u2019s Word and see what it had to say.\u00a0 Something totally, <em>drastically <\/em>happened to me that night in my apartment in New York.\u00a0 I knew, at that point, that, \u201cGod is real, and I don\u2019t understand it all.\u00a0 I can\u2019t explain it; but I know He\u2019s real, and I know He saved me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The next day you were back in front of the lights, with the clothes on and the cameras going off.\u00a0 Did you look back and go, \u201cMaybe that was just last night?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 No, it was drastic.\u00a0 In fact, what happened was\u2014when I went into work and I began to work around these models, I started to see the darkness in the industry.\u00a0 It was like God removed a veil for me; and I was able to see these girls that were bulimic, and sleeping around, the swearing that was going on, all the things that were going on behind the scenes, and the way that people were talking.\u00a0 It <em>disgusted<\/em> me, whereas, two days ago, I would have been the ring leader of all of that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I was just\u2014I felt like my skin was just crawling.\u00a0 I was convinced, \u201cI\u2019ve got to get out of here.\u00a0 I\u2019m done with this.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to be in this business.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to be around these people.\u00a0 They are crazy.\u00a0 All of these people that are going to hell\u2014I don\u2019t want to be around all of them.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s how I felt!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How old were you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was 19.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019d been in the modeling industry, then, for what\u2014?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 About a year and a half.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, did you, at that point, pack up and head back to North Carolina?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I guess it was about a year\u2014not quite a year and a half.\u00a0 It was about a year.\u00a0 I decided, \u201cI\u2019m leaving this business.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to have anything to do with this.\u201d\u00a0 I was going to move home to North Carolina; but before I did, I thought, \u201cI\u2019ve got to figure out what I\u2019m going to do for my next step.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI decided\u2014since I knew that my salvation was real, but I knew I couldn\u2019t defend it\u2014I wanted to be able to share with those people on the modeling shoot what had happened to me the day before, but I didn\u2019t know how\u2014they would have thought I was crazy.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know what to even say.\u00a0 \u201dI had an experience\u201d\u2014what is that all about?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted to be able to defend my faith.\u00a0 I wanted to be able to share my faith.\u00a0 I wanted to be able to <em>intelligently<\/em> explain to them historically, and scientifically, and prophetically how they can know this <em>true<\/em> Jesus of the Bible.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have any of that.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t equipped to do that.\u00a0 So, I decided, \u201cI\u2019m going to Bible college,\u201d and people thought I was crazy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 From Manhattan\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014to Upstate New York?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s true.\u00a0 So, I did go home to North Carolina; but that was just to unload my stuff, repack, and move to Upstate New York.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was it hard to get into Bible college, with a career in modeling?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 They were very gracious.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, they did welcome you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 They did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I can see some colleges maybe going, \u201cWell, let\u2019s talk about this a little bit.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t have blamed them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to wonder, as you\u2019re setting foot into Word of Life Bible College\u2014I mean, you\u2019re 20 years old now\u2014you\u2019re coming in with a little bit different experience of life than the other 18-year-olds who have just come off the high school campus\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014from all over the country.\u00a0 I mean, you had lived a high-rolling life!\u00a0 Was that like culture shock?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, but I welcomed it so much.\u00a0 I was so <em>eager <\/em>to be <em>immersed<\/em> in God\u2019s Word.\u00a0 That\u2019s all I wanted.\u00a0 It was amazing, to me, how some kids would come up\u2014they were just out of high school\u2014that were just kind of rebellious.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t want to be there; and I was just like, \u201cThis is all I want!\u00a0 This is <em>awesome<\/em>.\u00a0 Just pour into me!\u201d\u00a0 I was so desperate to know more of God, to be able to really investigate the Scriptures, and <em>know<\/em> how to defend my faith.\u00a0 That\u2019s <em>all<\/em> I wanted\u2014was just more and more of God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Any of the patterns of the past that followed you to Bible college?\u00a0 Any of the profanity that slipped back out?\u00a0 Any of the bulimia?\u2014because you had some experience with bulimia; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you find yourself brushing your hair, looking in the mirror, and going, \u201cMirror, Mirror on the wall, who\u2019s the fairest of them all?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I think that I just was so fed up with where I had come from.\u00a0 I was ready to turn over a new leaf.\u00a0 So, that\u2019s what I did in going there.\u00a0 I looked at the rules.\u00a0 They had all these rules and strict guidelines of what you had to do in going to Bible college.\u00a0 Some of them were really foreign to me because I was like, \u201cThis does not seem like something\u2014can I do this?\u201d but I was just <em>so<\/em> eager\u2014I was just <em>so<\/em> eager to just be filled up because I was empty.\u00a0 I was totally empty, and I needed a cup that overflowed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you try to change your appearance?\u00a0 Did you try to wear sweatshirts and put your hair in a ponytail or something\u2014just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014just so you wouldn\u2019t look glamorous at all?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 No!\u00a0 Why would I do that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, she\u2019s a woman!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s true.\u00a0 You were thinking that you might meet a guy at Bible college, too; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That was\u2014I mean, you know, if I\u2019m going to go to Bible college, (whew!) I\u2019m excited to meet the husband that God\u2019s got for me there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So\u2014you wanted to defend your faith and find a man?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, all one in the same!\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, what about your career at that point?\u00a0 Did you give up <em>all<\/em> modeling?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is the story, though, of T.J. Maxx in Boston\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014who called you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I had an agent\u2014that came a little bit later\u2014but I had an agent that called me and said that they wanted me to shoot for T.J. Maxx.\u00a0 That\u2019s how I paid for the rest of college.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I could only pay for part of it\u2014going there.\u00a0 The rest of it got paid for by T.J. Maxx.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, in the middle of Bible college, you\u2019re off for a photo shoot?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I was very squeamish about it because the thing was\u2014I was\u2014just because I didn\u2019t go straight to Bible college, at that point, I still put on that \u201cfreshman 15\u201d.\u00a0 It came on.\u00a0 Then, when I got to Bible college, it happened again.\u00a0 So, I didn\u2019t care!\u00a0 I was like, \u201cHey, I\u2019m just studying the Word of God.\u00a0 I just want to be here, and swim in Lake New York, and go hiking, and learn about the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 I began to put on weight.\u00a0 They have good food there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, when T.J. Maxx called and they wanted me to come do this job, I knew I wouldn\u2019t fit the clothes.\u00a0 I knew I wouldn\u2019t, but I needed my college paid for.\u00a0 So, I decided, \u201cOkay, I\u2019m just going to go do this.\u201d\u00a0 I had a friend of mine that came up to me.\u00a0 I was so worried about flying out to Boston to do this job, and he came up to me.\u00a0 He handed me a slip of paper that said, \u201cDo not worry about what you will wear,\u201d from the book of Matthew.\u00a0 I just cried.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cI\u2019m going to trust You, Lord.\u201d\u00a0 So, I did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, what ended up happening was\u2014I got on this job.\u00a0 Typically, they would have a size 4 or a 6, there on the shoot.\u00a0 Well, I knew I wasn\u2019t a 4 or 6.\u00a0 I was more like an 8.\u00a0 I was like, \u201cWell, I\u2019ll just do my best to squeeze into the clothes, and it\u2019ll be good.\u00a0 I\u2019ll just hold my breath or whatever it\u2019s going to take,\u201d and the clothes weren\u2019t there.\u00a0 I saw them\u2014they were doing my hair and makeup.\u00a0 Everything was going fine.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI could see people scrambling around.\u00a0 \u201cWhere are the clothes?\u00a0 Where are the clothes?\u00a0 We\u2019re supposed to shoot these clothes.\u201d\u00a0 People were looking at their watch.\u00a0 People started blaming each other.\u00a0 I could hear this going on while their doing my makeup.\u00a0 Then, we decided to break for lunch.\u00a0 Still, haven\u2019t shot anything because there are no clothes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey finally decided, \u201cThe clothes aren\u2019t coming.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know where they are.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re going to go to a local T.J. Maxx and we\u2019re going to pick up an outfit that we know that we need to shoot anyway.\u201d\u00a0 The only size that they have was like a 12, and they put the outfit on me.\u00a0 It hung on me.\u00a0 It was too big.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey had to bring in a seamstress who would tailor that outfit to fit me precisely.\u00a0 It was\u2014nobody ever scratched their head and wondered why I wasn\u2019t fitting the\u2014I mean, God had that totally planned out that I would wear these clothes\u2014that they would be tailored to fit me.\u00a0 He said, \u201cDo not worry about the clothes you will wear.\u201d\u00a0 He might as well have written, \u201cRachel, do not worry about the clothes you will wear.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo this day, I sit back and wonder, \u201cWonder where God was hiding those clothes?\u201d\u00a0 Eventually, they had to have come, but God had another plan.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI\u2019ll take care of you.\u00a0 Don\u2019t worry about that.\u00a0 You go back and study the Word of God some more.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 As I\u2019m listening to you, I\u2019m thinking how your story really illustrates Romans 12, verse 1 and 2, \u201cI urge you, therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour story really illustrates all of that.\u00a0 You were conformed to the world; but you met Christ and yielded to Him, and He transformed you.\u00a0 We have to be talking to a listener right now who\u2019s been on the borderline\u2014or maybe they\u2019ve stepped over.\u00a0 They are in need of yielding.\u00a0 They are in need of surrendering.\u00a0 They are need of calling out in honest prayer, like you did, \u201cGod, I\u2019m not even sure if you exist.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m amazed, Rachel, God really does take us where we are.\u00a0 He\u2019s not nearly as hung up on a prayer like that as we might be, but He meets us at that point.\u00a0 He does reach down, and He does invade our lives.\u00a0 When you encounter Jesus Christ, you\u2019ll never be the same.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re going to be perfect and all the issues are going to go away because there is more to this story, that we\u2019re going to hear, as you continue your modeling career.\u00a0 The issues got tougher, and the boundaries did get higher as you moved forward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you outline a lot of that in the book that you\u2019ve written, <em>Fashioned by Faith<\/em>, which we\u2019ve got in our don\u2019t do dot, dot, dot, dot, dot; but also, I want you to add to my list of don\u2019ts\u2014I also don\u2019t model lingerie.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cRachel, this is really going to affect your income.\u00a0 This is triple rate\u201d\u2014is what lingerie pay is\u2014\u201ctriple your rate.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cI know that, but I just have to draw this line.\u00a0 I cannot do it anymore.\u00a0 This is just where it is.\u201d\u00a0 They said, \u201cOkay, that\u2019s fine.\u201d\u00a0 Right after that, I was on a job.\u00a0 I was just going to be modeling tops, and blouses, and trousers, and just\u2014the demographic is like 45- to 65-year-old women.\u00a0 So, they book a 30-year-old model.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that funny?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m modeling these things\u2014except the woman comes out and she says, \u201cHey, you know what?\u00a0 We have a make-up shot that we need to do that we missed from yesterday.\u00a0 The model had to leave, but we have this shot.\u00a0 We need you to make-up.\u201d\u00a0 So, I say to her, \u201cWell, I don\u2019t model lingerie.\u201d\u00a0 Well, instead of respecting my position, like my agency did, she was angry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy agent called me on my cell.\u00a0 She said, \u201cRachel, listen.\u00a0 I know we\u2019ve had this conversation; but I mean, she says it\u2019s not provocative or anything.\u00a0 Would you please?\u00a0 Could you please just model the bra?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cPam, if my morals were for sale, I\u2019d be a prostitute.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ll hear what happened when Rachel drew that line tomorrow.\u00a0 Hope you can tune in. model, working in New York, Rachel Carter had a life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ.\u00a0 When she went to work the next day, she wasn\u2019t exactly sure what to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I wanted to be able to share with those people on the modeling shoot what had happened to me the day before, but they would have thought I was crazy.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know what to even say.\u00a0 \u201cI had an experience,\u201d\u2014what is that all about?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted to be able to defend my faith.\u00a0 I wanted to be able to share my faith.\u00a0 I wanted to be able to <em>intelligently<\/em> explain to them how they could know this<em> true<\/em> Jesus of the Bible, but I didn\u2019t have any of that.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t equipped to do that.\u00a0 So, I decided, \u201cI\u2019m going to Bible college.\u201d\u00a0 People thought I was crazy.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, January 10<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife\u00ae Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Rachel Carter joins us today to tell us how God led her out of fashion modeling to Bible college and then, back into the fashion industry.\u00a0 We\u2019ll hear her story today.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I had actually been spending some time thinking that, \u201cMaybe I ought to consider a career change and think about modeling\u2014until the conversation we\u2019ve been having this week, and I don\u2019t think that\u2019s for me; but\u2014(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat?\u00a0 What?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Modeling what!?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know\u2014a professional\u2014they go, and they take your picture.\u00a0 You kind of look\u2014sometimes, you have to look pouty.\u00a0 I can look pouty.\u00a0 Sometimes, you have to look happy.\u00a0 I can look happy\u2014it just sounds like easy work!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think you\u2019re doing what you need to be doing, Bob.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Don\u2019t quit my day job; huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we have Rachel Lee Carter with us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 What do you think, Rachel?\u00a0 You\u2019re a model.\u00a0 Do you think Bob ought to give up his day job?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I think you\u2019ve found your calling.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is that so?\u2014for more reasons than one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think Rachel is in politics, too.\u00a0 That was very diplomatic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, she has a career in modeling.\u00a0 She is a graduate of Word of Life and is married to Daryl\u2014two sons, lives in North Carolina.\u00a0 She has written a book called <em>Fashioned by Faith<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEarlier, I already asked a question of you, Rachel, that was kind of a gritty question right off the bat.\u00a0 I got to thinking about it, and I wanted to kind of come back to that question again and have you unpack why you answered like you did.\u00a0 I asked you the question, \u201cIf you had a daughter\u2014currently, you don\u2019t, but if you had a daughter\u2014and she said, \u2018Mommy, I\u2019d like to be a model like you,\u2019 would you encourage her to be a model?\u201d\u00a0 You answered\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, that\u2019s really interesting.\u00a0 What I want you to unpack a bit is, \u201cWhy would you not want your daughter to head in that direction?\u201d because you\u2019ve given 20 years of your life to this industry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 It came with a lot of scars, a lot of scars, including bulimia and a lot of heartbreak, a lot of really having to find my identity in something.\u00a0 I tried to find it in the mirror; and then, when that failed, I tried to find it in other things.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until I found my identity in Jesus, that now I am able to do this career.\u00a0 It\u2019s such a difficult industry to be in because it\u2019s all on outward appearance, and that is not what we are created to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy life verse is 1 Peter 3:4 which says, \u201c\u2026instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God\u2019s sight.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s very difficult to find that place when everything around you is so focused on what is external.\u00a0 I would steer her from that\u2014unless, of course, like I said, she has gone to Bible college, she knows the Word of God, she is an evangelist at heart, and she is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She dresses in Scripture verses; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right, and she is\u2014that would be\u2014and like I said, \u201cIf God called her to that business, He would also have to let her momma know.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That really leads me to a second gritty question that I was thinking about asking, as well.\u00a0 This is going to sound kind of tacky; alright?\u00a0 I\u2019m just going to establish that on the front-end.\u00a0 I\u2019m just curious as to how you would answer it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou spent most of your life\u2014adult life\u2014around the subject of modeling, and it is based upon the external.\u00a0 It\u2019s about physical appearance.\u00a0 Do you ever get <em>weary<\/em> of people relating to you around your beauty?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, very much so.\u00a0 In fact, I remember being in Bible college.\u00a0 It was a small school, but there were 14 Rachels there\u2014some Bible names\u2014so, there were a lot of Rachels.\u00a0 I was considered \u201cRachel, the model.\u201d\u00a0 I hated that!\u00a0 I was like, \u201cGosh, why can\u2019t I be \u2018Rachel, the Christian\u2019; or \u2018Rachel, the blonde\u2019; or \u2018Rachel, something else\u2019?\u201d\u00a0 I hated having that identity of just being\u2014it\u2019s just the model\u2014just the model, just the model.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Prior to that, though, if we dialed it back five years and your identity had been \u201cRachel, the model\u201d, that\u2019s what you were living for; weren\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Talk about how the idol of beauty can warp somebody\u2019s thinking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, your\u2014the idol of beauty is what is in everyone else\u2019s mind.\u00a0 So, right now, we are looking at media to establish what is beautiful\u2014whatever media happens to say, \u201cThat\u2019s what we follow.\u201d\u00a0 For a long time, it was the Cindy Crawfords\u2014it was the voluptuous\u2014it was the <em>sporty<\/em> look.\u00a0 Then, all of a sudden Kate Moss comes along, and she\u2019s five foot six; and she\u2019s skinny and \u201cwaifey\u201d and all that.\u00a0 Then, all of the sudden, that\u2019s what\u2019s beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we\u2019re always chasing what\u2019s beautiful when media can\u2019t make up their mind what is considered beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just listening to you say what you just said about beauty\u2014I\u2019m reflecting back on another conversation, Bob, you and I had with three women here in this studio, where we were talking to women about their preoccupation with the mirror.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMen have a problem with lusting after women because of sexual allurement.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of their main Achilles\u2019 heels.\u00a0 I think for women, one of their Achilles\u2019 heels, one of their temptation points, is the mirror.\u00a0 Don\u2019t you agree?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Preoccupied with, \u201cHow I look,\u201d \u201cWhat others think,\u201d \u201cHow I\u2019m doing on the beauty scale,\u201d\u2014which seems to be a very cruel standard, really.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is.\u00a0 I wonder if Eve dealt with any of that since she didn\u2019t have any media around her to tell her what was supposed to be\u2014you know, \u201cWhat\u2019s beautiful?\u201d\u00a0 I think we are just so preoccupied with what is going on in media, with Hollywood, and what people are saying is supposed to be beautiful\u2014that we try to measure ourselves up against that standard; and we can\u2019t!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>First of all, that standard is not what\u2014it\u2019s not even real.\u00a0 It is photoshopped.\u00a0 It\u2019s dealt with, and it\u2019s tweaked.\u00a0 All of these things are done to it.\u00a0 So, there\u2019s not a standard of beauty; but you\u2019re right\u2014women do, as a whole, have a preoccupation, I think, with the mirror.\u00a0 That comes from something that\u2019s deeper inside of them\u2014which, is a longing to be appreciated, accepted, loved, and adored\u2014all for her exterior.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really, the solution is back to where you found it\u2014in the person of Jesus Christ\u2014and finding your identity in Him\u2014as a sinner, deeply broken, but redeemed by the God of the universe, Who loved you enough to send His own son to die for you.\u00a0 That completely transformed your own perspective of your inner being and gave you a purpose for your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That turning point, for you, actually came as a result of some of your fellow models who began talking to you about their faith; is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That was such a God-assignment for these girls.\u00a0 I don\u2019t even know their names or where they are today, but there were two models on a job that I did in New York.\u00a0 They were sharing their faith with some other models there, and I kind of joined the group and listened.\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI told them that, \u201cYou know, I grew up that way.\u00a0 I grew up believing that same thing; but now, I\u2019m not so sure that\u2019s what I believe anymore.\u201d\u00a0 They said, \u201cWell, why?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, you know, I mean\u2014\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI shared with them how some of my other friends, \u201cThey\u2019re really great people.\u00a0 How can I look at them in the face and say, \u2018You know, you\u2019re not going to heaven\u2019?\u00a0 \u2018You\u2019re going to go to hell when you die if you die without Jesus.\u2019\u00a0 These people are more moral than I am!\u00a0 How can I defend that?\u201d I said.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m really struggling with this a lot.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was so much of the introduction of New Age religion, in the modeling industry at that time, that I kind of delved into horoscopes, and having my chart read, and all of these other things that were <em>just interesting<\/em> to me.\u00a0 So, the Devil was having such a field day with me\u2014pulling me in all different directions.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThese models said, \u201cRachel, you just need to get <em>really honest<\/em> with God.\u00a0 Just get on your face before Him, and call out to Him, and ask Him to reveal Himself to you.\u00a0 Tell Him how you feel.\u00a0 He already knows you.\u00a0 He knows your heart, and just ask Him that, \u2018If He\u2019s real, to reveal Himself to you and to come into your heart and save you.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 So, I got home that night, and I just kept thinking the same thing over and over again\u2014hearing what these girls had said to me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember just getting on my knees; and I said, \u201cI don\u2019t even know if You can hear me.\u00a0 I don\u2019t even know if You exist, but if You do, I\u2019m dying inside.\u00a0 I\u2019ve had the world by the tail.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been mingling with celebrities, and I\u2019ve been hanging out and doing all of these fashion shoots.\u00a0 It seems like life would be just absolutely wonderful, but I\u2019m <em>dying <\/em>inside.\u00a0 If You are real, will You come into my heart and save me?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had such an experience that night.\u00a0 I felt the Holy Spirit in my presence.\u00a0 I felt Him infuse me.\u00a0 I felt something completely different.\u00a0 My doubts were gone.\u00a0 Everything about the agenda that I had in life began to change.\u00a0 The music that I was listening to\u2014I went straight to my CD cabinet, and I threw out almost all of the music that I had been listening to because it was just like something turned a switch in my life that, \u201cI can\u2019t even listen to this music anymore.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe swearing that would have been coming out of my mouth stopped.\u00a0 The people that I hung around with\u2014I didn\u2019t want to be around those people anymore.\u00a0 I wanted to find a church.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t wait to find a church.\u00a0 I wanted to talk to a pastor.\u00a0 I wanted to open up God\u2019s Word and see what it had to say.\u00a0 Something totally, <em>drastically <\/em>happened to me that night in my apartment in New York.\u00a0 I knew, at that point, that, \u201cGod is real, and I don\u2019t understand it all.\u00a0 I can\u2019t explain it; but I know He\u2019s real, and I know He saved me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The next day you were back in front of the lights, with the clothes on and the cameras going off.\u00a0 Did you look back and go, \u201cMaybe that was just last night?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 No, it was drastic.\u00a0 In fact, what happened was\u2014when I went into work and I began to work around these models, I started to see the darkness in the industry.\u00a0 It was like God removed a veil for me; and I was able to see these girls that were bulimic, and sleeping around, the swearing that was going on, all the things that were going on behind the scenes, and the way that people were talking.\u00a0 It <em>disgusted<\/em> me, whereas, two days ago, I would have been the ring leader of all of that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I was just\u2014I felt like my skin was just crawling.\u00a0 I was convinced, \u201cI\u2019ve got to get out of here.\u00a0 I\u2019m done with this.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to be in this business.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to be around these people.\u00a0 They are crazy.\u00a0 All of these people that are going to hell\u2014I don\u2019t want to be around all of them.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s how I felt!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How old were you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was 19.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019d been in the modeling industry, then, for what\u2014?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 About a year and a half.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, did you, at that point, pack up and head back to North Carolina?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I guess it was about a year\u2014not quite a year and a half.\u00a0 It was about a year.\u00a0 I decided, \u201cI\u2019m leaving this business.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to have anything to do with this.\u201d\u00a0 I was going to move home to North Carolina; but before I did, I thought, \u201cI\u2019ve got to figure out what I\u2019m going to do for my next step.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI decided\u2014since I knew that my salvation was real, but I knew I couldn\u2019t defend it\u2014I wanted to be able to share with those people on the modeling shoot what had happened to me the day before, but I didn\u2019t know how\u2014they would have thought I was crazy.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know what to even say.\u00a0 \u201dI had an experience\u201d\u2014what is that all about?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted to be able to defend my faith.\u00a0 I wanted to be able to share my faith.\u00a0 I wanted to be able to <em>intelligently<\/em> explain to them historically, and scientifically, and prophetically how they can know this <em>true<\/em> Jesus of the Bible.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have any of that.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t equipped to do that.\u00a0 So, I decided, \u201cI\u2019m going to Bible college,\u201d and people thought I was crazy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 From Manhattan\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014to Upstate New York?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s true.\u00a0 So, I did go home to North Carolina; but that was just to unload my stuff, repack, and move to Upstate New York.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was it hard to get into Bible college, with a career in modeling?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 They were very gracious.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, they did welcome you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 They did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I can see some colleges maybe going, \u201cWell, let\u2019s talk about this a little bit.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t have blamed them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to wonder, as you\u2019re setting foot into Word of Life Bible College\u2014I mean, you\u2019re 20 years old now\u2014you\u2019re coming in with a little bit different experience of life than the other 18-year-olds who have just come off the high school campus\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014from all over the country.\u00a0 I mean, you had lived a high-rolling life!\u00a0 Was that like culture shock?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, but I welcomed it so much.\u00a0 I was so <em>eager <\/em>to be <em>immersed<\/em> in God\u2019s Word.\u00a0 That\u2019s all I wanted.\u00a0 It was amazing, to me, how some kids would come up\u2014they were just out of high school\u2014that were just kind of rebellious.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t want to be there; and I was just like, \u201cThis is all I want!\u00a0 This is <em>awesome<\/em>.\u00a0 Just pour into me!\u201d\u00a0 I was so desperate to know more of God, to be able to really investigate the Scriptures, and <em>know<\/em> how to defend my faith.\u00a0 That\u2019s <em>all<\/em> I wanted\u2014was just more and more of God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Any of the patterns of the past that followed you to Bible college?\u00a0 Any of the profanity that slipped back out?\u00a0 Any of the bulimia?\u2014because you had some experience with bulimia; right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you find yourself brushing your hair, looking in the mirror, and going, \u201cMirror, Mirror on the wall, who\u2019s the fairest of them all?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I think that I just was so fed up with where I had come from.\u00a0 I was ready to turn over a new leaf.\u00a0 So, that\u2019s what I did in going there.\u00a0 I looked at the rules.\u00a0 They had all these rules and strict guidelines of what you had to do in going to Bible college.\u00a0 Some of them were really foreign to me because I was like, \u201cThis does not seem like something\u2014can I do this?\u201d but I was just <em>so<\/em> eager\u2014I was just <em>so<\/em> eager to just be filled up because I was empty.\u00a0 I was totally empty, and I needed a cup that overflowed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you try to change your appearance?\u00a0 Did you try to wear sweatshirts and put your hair in a ponytail or something\u2014just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014just so you wouldn\u2019t look glamorous at all?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 No!\u00a0 Why would I do that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, she\u2019s a woman!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s true.\u00a0 You were thinking that you might meet a guy at Bible college, too; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That was\u2014I mean, you know, if I\u2019m going to go to Bible college, (whew!) I\u2019m excited to meet the husband that God\u2019s got for me there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So\u2014you wanted to defend your faith and find a man?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, all one in the same!\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, what about your career at that point?\u00a0 Did you give up <em>all<\/em> modeling?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is the story, though, of T.J. Maxx in Boston\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014who called you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I had an agent\u2014that came a little bit later\u2014but I had an agent that called me and said that they wanted me to shoot for T.J. Maxx.\u00a0 That\u2019s how I paid for the rest of college.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I could only pay for part of it\u2014going there.\u00a0 The rest of it got paid for by T.J. Maxx.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, in the middle of Bible college, you\u2019re off for a photo shoot?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I was very squeamish about it because the thing was\u2014I was\u2014just because I didn\u2019t go straight to Bible college, at that point, I still put on that \u201cfreshman 15\u201d.\u00a0 It came on.\u00a0 Then, when I got to Bible college, it happened again.\u00a0 So, I didn\u2019t care!\u00a0 I was like, \u201cHey, I\u2019m just studying the Word of God.\u00a0 I just want to be here, and swim in Lake New York, and go hiking, and learn about the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 I began to put on weight.\u00a0 They have good food there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, when T.J. Maxx called and they wanted me to come do this job, I knew I wouldn\u2019t fit the clothes.\u00a0 I knew I wouldn\u2019t, but I needed my college paid for.\u00a0 So, I decided, \u201cOkay, I\u2019m just going to go do this.\u201d\u00a0 I had a friend of mine that came up to me.\u00a0 I was so worried about flying out to Boston to do this job, and he came up to me.\u00a0 He handed me a slip of paper that said, \u201cDo not worry about what you will wear,\u201d from the book of Matthew.\u00a0 I just cried.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cI\u2019m going to trust You, Lord.\u201d\u00a0 So, I did.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, what ended up happening was\u2014I got on this job.\u00a0 Typically, they would have a size 4 or a 6, there on the shoot.\u00a0 Well, I knew I wasn\u2019t a 4 or 6.\u00a0 I was more like an 8.\u00a0 I was like, \u201cWell, I\u2019ll just do my best to squeeze into the clothes, and it\u2019ll be good.\u00a0 I\u2019ll just hold my breath or whatever it\u2019s going to take,\u201d and the clothes weren\u2019t there.\u00a0 I saw them\u2014they were doing my hair and makeup.\u00a0 Everything was going fine.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI could see people scrambling around.\u00a0 \u201cWhere are the clothes?\u00a0 Where are the clothes?\u00a0 We\u2019re supposed to shoot these clothes.\u201d\u00a0 People were looking at their watch.\u00a0 People started blaming each other.\u00a0 I could hear this going on while their doing my makeup.\u00a0 Then, we decided to break for lunch.\u00a0 Still, haven\u2019t shot anything because there are no clothes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey finally decided, \u201cThe clothes aren\u2019t coming.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know where they are.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re going to go to a local T.J. Maxx and we\u2019re going to pick up an outfit that we know that we need to shoot anyway.\u201d\u00a0 The only size that they have was like a 12, and they put the outfit on me.\u00a0 It hung on me.\u00a0 It was too big.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey had to bring in a seamstress who would tailor that outfit to fit me precisely.\u00a0 It was\u2014nobody ever scratched their head and wondered why I wasn\u2019t fitting the\u2014I mean, God had that totally planned out that I would wear these clothes\u2014that they would be tailored to fit me.\u00a0 He said, \u201cDo not worry about the clothes you will wear.\u201d\u00a0 He might as well have written, \u201cRachel, do not worry about the clothes you will wear.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo this day, I sit back and wonder, \u201cWonder where God was hiding those clothes?\u201d\u00a0 Eventually, they had to have come, but God had another plan.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI\u2019ll take care of you.\u00a0 Don\u2019t worry about that.\u00a0 You go back and study the Word of God some more.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 As I\u2019m listening to you, I\u2019m thinking how your story really illustrates Romans 12, verse 1 and 2, \u201cI urge you, therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour story really illustrates all of that.\u00a0 You were conformed to the world; but also, I want you to add to my list of don\u2019ts\u2014I also don\u2019t model lingerie.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cRachel, this is really going to affect your income.\u00a0 This is triple rate\u201d\u2014is what lingerie pay is\u2014\u201ctriple your rate.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cI know that, but I just have to draw this line.\u00a0 I cannot do it anymore.\u00a0 This is just where it is.\u201d\u00a0 They said, \u201cOkay, that\u2019s fine.\u201d\u00a0 Right after that, I was on a job.\u00a0 I was just going to be modeling tops, and blouses, and trousers, and just\u2014the demographic is like 45- to 65-year-old women.\u00a0 So, they book a 30-year-old model.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that funny?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m modeling these things\u2014except the woman comes out and she says, \u201cHey, you know what?\u00a0 We have a make-up shot that we need to do that we missed from yesterday.\u00a0 The model had to leave, but we have this shot.\u00a0 We need you to make-up.\u201d\u00a0 So, I say to her, \u201cWell, I don\u2019t model lingerie.\u201d\u00a0 Well, instead of respecting my position, like my agency did, she was angry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy agent called me on my cell.\u00a0 She said, \u201cRachel, listen.\u00a0 I know we\u2019ve had this conversation;
