At age 18, Rachel Lee Carter was offered a modeling contract in New York.\u00a0 Although she had grown up in the church, her faith was not rooted and grounded enough for her to be able to withstand what she faced when she got there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 My Bible teaches that, \u201cThose who call upon the name of the Lord will be saved,\u201d and they\u2019re the only ones who are saved; they are the only ones who will enter into heaven.\u00a0 I knew that, and I remember praying that prayer; but when I got to New York, \u201cThese were really nice people!\u201d\u00a0 These were friendly people; these were people who fed the homeless and did good things.\u00a0 Who was I to now say, \u201cYou\u2019re not going to heaven because you don\u2019t believe in the same Jesus I do and you don\u2019t have Him in your heart\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI began to very much question the faith that I grew up in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, January 9th.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife\u00ae, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Rachel Carter joins us today to share a story about being a fashion model, losing your faith, and compromise.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got to be honest with you\u2014(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This morning, I\u2019m getting up and I\u2019m getting dressed; and I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWell, we\u2019re going to be interviewing Rachel Carter\u2014you know, the fashion model.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So I spent a little longer in the closet kind of looking at\u2014(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, honestly, I look at your shirt and I go, \u201cWhat\u2019s happened to Bob?!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, here\u2019s the conclusion I came to\u2014standing in my closet\u2014I <em>really<\/em> need to go shopping!\u00a0\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s just not much here that you can wear to a radio interview with a fashion model.\u00a0 So I found one thing that had a little polo pony on it; and I thought, \u201cThat\u2019s got to get me some street \u2018cred\u2019 of some kind;\u201d you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think Rachel probably likes it.\u00a0 Do you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do like it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You like his shirt?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Great job, Bob.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve upgraded the look here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> already, Rachel.\u00a0 We do want to welcome you to the broadcast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe is a model.\u00a0 She\u2019s also a graduate of Word of Life up in New York.\u00a0 She is married to Daryl; they have two sons and live in North Carolina.\u00a0 She has written a book called <em>Fashioned by Faith.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>It really takes on the issue of modesty.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOut of your experience\u2014you got a whale of a lot of experience\u2014I\u2019m going to ask you a gritty question right off the start.\u00a0 I usually don\u2019t hit it this hard right off the start; but I can tell you can handle it, Rachel.\u00a0 Alright?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you had a daughter, would you want her to be a model like you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You would not want her to have a career in modeling?\u00a0 Why?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Unless God called her there.\u00a0 If God called her there, He would have to let me know that, too\u2014(Laughter)\u2014and after she goes to Bible college and then she goes into the fashion industry.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019d probably have to show credentials, just so you could verify it was God speaking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s a great question.\u00a0 We have a young woman at our church whose parents came one Sunday and said, \u201cPray for us.\u00a0 Our daughter is going to be moving to New York.\u00a0 She\u2019s got somebody here locally who has recommended her.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe\u2019s a very attractive young woman; and I thought to myself, \u201cOh, my goodness!\u00a0 She\u2019s a sweet, 18-year-old young woman headed off to New York\u201d; and I thought, \u201cDoes she really know what she\u2019s walking into?\u201d because my perception is\u2014it\u2019s really a jungle out there and it\u2019s going to be hard to hang on to a love for Jesus and break into modeling in New York City.\u00a0 Is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 It\u2019s true.\u00a0 That was my experience.\u00a0 I grew up in the church and made a profession of faith when I was seven years old.\u00a0 I was very involved with our church.\u00a0 We were there when the doors were opened, as they say.\u00a0 It was when I was in middle school that I was very involved with the youth group, and we were going on youth trips.\u00a0 I loved it\u2014loved the camaraderie that we had there in the youth group.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, in high school, I used that as an opportunity to be sort of set apart in my own way\u2014but I didn\u2019t want to be <em>too <\/em>set apart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to be that Jesus girl.\u00a0 That scared me.\u00a0 I tried my very best to \u201cfit in\u201d in high school and still manage to be a church girl, going once a week or two to three times a week to church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did \u201cfit in\u201d mean compromise?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it did.\u00a0 I think that there\u2019s no other way that you can really describe that.\u00a0 It meant that I went where people went and I partied like people partied.\u00a0 You know, a funny thing was that I never drank alcohol.\u00a0 I felt like that was my testimony to them:\u00a0 \u201cThey know I\u2019m a Christian, and they know that is why I don\u2019t drink\u2014because of my love for the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe crazy thing is, they never knew that.\u00a0 They never realized that.\u00a0 I met a girl later on in life and she said, \u201cHey, would you like a glass of champagne?\u201d\u00a0 I looked at her and said, \u201cI don\u2019t drink\u2014remember?\u201d\u00a0 She thought back to high school and said, \u201cYou didn\u2019t drink in high school?\u201d\u00a0 All of that time, I thought that I was being that witness of not drinking and that was going to be what set me apart\u2014that she would know I was a Christian.\u00a0 Nobody knew.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t influencing anybody.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was a reason why you didn\u2019t drink.\u00a0 Alcohol was abused.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 My father was an alcoholic.\u00a0 Now, he was a professed Christian; but he had struggled with alcohol as I was growing up.\u00a0 As I saw the destruction that it caused, I ran from it.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI didn\u2019t want any part of it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was tragically killed when I was 14 years old.\u00a0 From that point on, I knew I would never touch it.\u00a0 So I didn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was he abusive as a drunk?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 To your mom?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 To you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, but mostly to my mother and my brother.\u00a0 I was kind of the princess, but he was very verbally abusive and very emotionally abusive in our home.\u00a0 Seeing that destruction and what it does kept me far from ever wanting to go near it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, as a teenager, you ended up getting involved in some of the national contests\u2014beauty pageant contests.\u00a0 How did that work for your modeling Christian values?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know, as a teenager, they\u2019re not really asking you\u2014at least at that time\u2014to compromise on stage.\u00a0 What I was wearing was long evening gowns and things that were modest and well-cut.\u00a0 Growing up, that was my goal; that was kind of my outlet.\u00a0 My \u201cthing\u201d was to do beauty pageants.\u00a0 I loved it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was interesting because, growing up, I went through that middle-age phase of having the acne, and the glasses, and the braces\u2014that awkward stage that a lot of girls go through; but as I came out of that and went into the beauty pageants, that became my niche\u2014my thing that I wanted to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEverything was around going to\u2014trying to make it to \u201cMiss Teen USA\u201d.\u00a0 So when I was 17, I won \u201cMiss Teen North Carolina\u201d and was able to go to \u201cMiss Teen USA.\u201d\u00a0 From there, it just became a natural pattern to go right into the fashion industry; so, I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Again, \u201cMiss Teen USA\u201d, as you said, was appropriate\u2014nothing that you look back on now and say, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t do it again.\u201d\u00a0 Is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Everything was totally above-board.\u00a0 We\u2019re talking early \u201890s.\u00a0 I\u2019m aging myself.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I guess my question is, \u201cHad they been pushing the line at that time and you were a young 17-year-old girl, would that have been an issue for you?\u201d or do you think you would have said, \u201cOh well, this is just what you have to do\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would have failed that test.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were already headed in a direction that was, \u201cI\u2019m in pursuit of something more important to me than walking with Jesus.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had already made those decisions and compromised.\u00a0 You know, I think there are a lot of parents listening to you today who are raising daughters, as well as sons, attempting to embed within them convictions, and standards, and boundaries\u2014that build some fences around their lives as they encounter this culture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWould there have been any way your parents could have helped you or come alongside you?\u00a0 Could they have helped you establish some of those boundaries?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think so.\u00a0 My mom\u2014you know, she was a single parent.\u00a0 I think it was hard for her, just trying to navigate this life as a single mom.\u00a0 She became more of a friend of mine, and we really depended on each other.\u00a0 We still do.\u00a0 We\u2019re very close; but I think if my dad would have been there\u2014to kind of be that sounding board and say, \u201cNo, these are the guidelines.\u00a0 This is what you\u2019re going to do; this is what you\u2019re not going to do.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to put my foot down here because I love you.\u201d\u00a0 I think that might have registered completely differently with me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, my mom\u2019s not a guy.\u00a0 She\u2019s not wired like a guy.\u00a0 She wouldn\u2019t have known certain things to keep me from.\u00a0 She just tried to protect me the best she could\u2014getting to \u201cMiss Teen USA\u201d and then being able to move on into the fashion industry\u2014of course, she was very proud of me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I hear you saying, Rachel, is\u2014a young lady, at that point in her life, dealing with all of the choices that you had to deal with, needed parents to engage your life\u2014your standards\u2014and speak with you and talk with you.\u00a0 Certainly, you needed a parent who was a friend; but you didn\u2019t need your mom\u00a0 <em>just<\/em> tobe your friend.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You needed someone to, as you said, call you up\u2014call you to keep your standards high and not allow the culture to shape your standards totally.\u00a0 I fear, today,\u00a0 what\u2019s happening with a lot of parents is\u2014they\u2019re allowing their kids to push them out of their lives.\u00a0 As a result, they\u2019re leaving their children much more vulnerable.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s true.\u00a0 That\u2019s true.\u00a0 I think if there were anybody involved in my life, whether it had been my parents, or a youth pastor, or a school counselor, or a friend from church, or a neighbor, or somebody that could have really held me accountable with some of those decisions\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the thing is, it comes in so subtly.\u00a0 When you just do a beauty pageant, like I said\u2014it iss long evening gowns and everything\u2019s fine.\u00a0 Except, you have to remember, that that\u2019s <em>all <\/em>about appearance\u2014it\u2019s all about appearance\u2014all about appearance.\u00a0 So that was beginning to set me up for starting to make decisions that were all about appearance. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEventually, it would be whatever it cost.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s where somebody could have come in and said, \u201cHey, let\u2019s take inventory of this and see where this is going.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, at 17 or 18 years old, does your mom buy you a ticket to New York and you\u2019re off on your own in the big city, trying to break into the modeling industry?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, sort of.\u00a0 I was discovered, and we had an opportunity to go up and meet the agent.\u00a0 My mom and I flew to New York.\u00a0 We met the agent; we stayed in her home.\u00a0 She took us around the city a little bit.\u00a0 We saw that it was a legitimate organization; and I had an opportunity to go to castings, where I would meet people.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even have a portfolio; I had nothing.\u00a0 I was just there as kind of an introduction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Teen<\/em> magazine wanted to book me for the next day.\u00a0 They asked, \u201cCould we change our ticket?\u00a0 Could I stay and do the photo shoot the next day?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 So it was, \u201cYeah!\u00a0 This is great!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, I\u2019m picturing you as an 18-year-old girl, being shown the skyscrapers, the streets of New York, the big-time life that is there\u2014the big city.\u00a0 You had to be overwhelmed\u2014just kind of wowed, coming from North Carolina to the big city.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was\u2014absolutely!\u00a0 It was the first time I had ever been to New York.\u00a0 Exactly\u2014you nailed it.\u00a0 I was this wide-eyed country girl moving\u2014or at least, even going to this concrete jungle and seeing this for the first time\u2014and then, having <em>Teen <\/em>magazine, which was the magazine of choice at the time, wanting to book me for a photo shoot.\u00a0 I mean\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was your mom \u201cwowed,\u201d too?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 Yes, absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, it\u2019s like dreams come true.\u00a0 This doesn\u2019t happen to the typical girl who shows up in New York.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You found the glass slipper!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the next day you\u2019re at the shoot and everything goes great?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I do the photo shoot.\u00a0 All goes well, and we made a decision basically then that, \u201cWell, I guess this means I can forgo college for the moment and move to Manhattan.\u201d\u00a0 So, I sold my car\u2014went back home and sold my car\u2014and had about $4,500 to move with me to New York.\u00a0 That would be what I was going to get started on.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 By yourself?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 By myself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No way!\u00a0 So where was your mom in all of this?\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Was she cheering you on, \u201cGo girl, go!\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think she was a little bit nervous, you know; but she had met my bookers and she knew that, at the moment, I would be living in their home.\u00a0 When I went there, right after high school\u2014I graduated\u2014and when I went there, I was going to be living in their home with them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I did that, and my mom saw that I was doing well, and that I had accountability, and everything was good, everything seemed okay.\u00a0 Shortly after that, I decided that, \u201cI am ready to move into Manhattan,\u201d because I was in Queens\u2014move into Manhattan, where real models lived.\u00a0 That\u2019s where things got a little sketchy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell us about a single girl, on her own, in Manhattan, breaking into the modeling business\u2014living where the models live\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Whose faith is not first and foremost\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not at the forefront.\u00a0 What does life look like?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I was overwhelmed, like you say.\u00a0 I know that I had, really, the world at my fingertips.\u00a0 I could stay out as late as I wanted to stay out.\u00a0 Nobody was asking me when I came in or checking their watch.\u00a0 I was on my own.\u00a0 I could go rollerblading around Central Park at 3:00 in the morning if I felt like it.\u00a0 I could do anything\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hold it!\u00a0 Hold it!\u00a0 Did you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, I did!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 In Central Park, in the middle of the night?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know; it is funny.\u00a0\u00a0 My brother used to say, \u201cYou know, Rachel, what they say about Central Park\u2014\u2018It\u2019s beautiful by day; deadly by night.\u2019\u00a0 What are you doing!?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cHey, I\u2019m going 20 miles an hour; who\u2019s going to catch me?!\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 Wow!\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 But that was the kind of mentality.\u00a0 I was let loose.\u00a0 I could get into bars, where I shouldn\u2019t have been allowed to be in.\u00a0 I could get into clubs, where I shouldn\u2019t have been able to be in.\u00a0 I was hanging out with people who did not know the Lord.\u00a0 I had nobody telling me to get up and go to Sunday school in the morning on Sunday morning.\u00a0 So, the church\u2014that kind of went by the wayside.\u00a0 That was not an important issue for me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think I grew up in the Bible belt and I felt like, \u201cThis is why I do what I do.\u00a0 I go to church because that is what everybody else does.\u201d\u00a0 But when you\u2019re living in Manhattan\u2014my friends weren\u2019t going to church; so, I didn\u2019t go to church.\u00a0 My friends were going to clubs; so, that\u2019s what I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the other advertisers began to line up\u2014the magazines, the catalogs, and the different types of photo shoots.\u00a0 Name some of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I worked for<em> Cover Girl\u00ae<\/em>, Revlon<em>\u00ae<\/em>; I did Tommy Hilfiger<em>\u00ae<\/em>, DKNY<em>\u00ae<\/em>; lots of clients.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there, at all, a still, small voice?\u2014a voice of conviction inside you going, \u201cRachel?!\u201d\u00a0 Or had you so tuned out from that, that even if the Spirit was tapping, you weren\u2019t listening?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had so tuned out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was anything going on with you spiritually?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 No; because, you know, I had always grown up in the church.\u00a0 I knew that, you know, my Bible teaches that, \u201cThose who call upon the name of the Lord will be saved,\u201d and that only those who have Jesus Christ in their heart\u2014living in them\u2014they are the only ones who are saved.\u00a0 They are the only ones who will enter into heaven.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew that, and I remember praying that prayer; but when I got to New York, and I had all these other friends of different nationalities, different backgrounds, different faiths\u2014a lot of people involved with New Age religion, or Buddhism, or other things\u2014these were <em>really<\/em> nice people.\u00a0 These were <em>friendly<\/em> people.\u00a0 These were people who fed the homeless and did good things.\u00a0 Who was I to now say, \u201cYou\u2019re not going to heaven because you don\u2019t believe in the same Jesus I do and you don\u2019t have Him in your heart\u201d?\u00a0 I began to very much question the faith that I grew up in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s an echelon in modeling that is\u2014I mean, I think of what they refer to as the \u201csupermodels,\u201d some of the big names that we hear about and know.\u00a0 Was your eye on that prize?\u00a0 Did you want to be Kate Moss, or Christie Brinkley, or one of those known-name models?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 I mean, just like when I started doing pageants when I was 12 years old, wanting to make it to \u201cMiss Teen USA\u201d\u2014I mean, that was the goal.\u00a0 When I got to New York, the goal was \u201csupermodel.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What does it take to get there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Take your clothes off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You could not be a committed Christian and get to that caliber?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, my agent had told me that she wanted to develop a supermodel that never had to take her clothes off.\u00a0 She said, \u201cMaybe it can be you.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, I\u2019m not taking my clothes off, so whether I make it or not\u2014if I do a couple hundred thousand a year or if I do a couple million a year\u2014\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, that\u2019s kind of the difference.\u00a0 That top two percent of models, that are working models, can make a really good living; but I was okay with just a couple hundred thousand a year.\u00a0 \u201cHey, I\u2019m 18 years old!\u201d\u00a0 That sounded pretty good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you get to keep your clothes on, yes; that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was good for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I\u2019m wondering, just listening to your story, is, \u201cWhere did the standard come from?\u2014where, even though you said you were compromising; but you weren\u2019t in a free-fall.\u00a0 You weren\u2019t throwing it <em>all<\/em> away.\u00a0 You had your limits.\u00a0 Where did that come from?\u00a0 Was it the Christian home that you grew up in that protected you at that point?\u2014the church you went to?\u2014that portion of the Bible that you knew?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think so.\u00a0 It was that, but it was also that I\u2019m very stubborn.\u00a0 So, if somebody told me that I <em>had<\/em> to do something in order to make it, I was going to find a way where I was going to show you, \u201cThat\u2019s not the case.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was just \u201cicky\u201d to me to ever have to take off my clothes for anybody else to see me.\u00a0\u00a0 That was just\u2014I\u2019m very thankful for that.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure if that came from just growing up in my home of a Christian upbringing or if it was something that is just instilled in me.\u00a0 The reason I say that is\u2014that I\u2019m not convinced that when I moved to New York, I was a born-again Christian.\u00a0 I\u2019m <em>not convinced<\/em> because I know that the decisions I was making, living there, were very counter to what Christianity is about.\u00a0 I could not make these decisions and call myself a child of God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it was actually while I was there, questioning my faith, and seeing that all these other people who were good, solid people and doing good things and not of the same faith as me, that as I began to question my faith, \u201cHow can I say that I believe what I believe?\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t even measure up.\u00a0 They\u2019re doing better things than I\u2019m doing.\u201d\u00a0 As I began to question that, I began to fall further and further away from the faith that I grew up in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want to imagine a scene where your manager calls you and says, \u201cRachel, I\u2019ve got <em>wonderful <\/em>news.\u00a0 <em>Vanity Fair<\/em>\u00ae wants you on the cover, and they\u2019ve asked Annie Leibovitz to take the photography.\u00a0 The only thing is, you will have to remove your top; but your arms will be positioned in such a <em>tasteful<\/em> way\u2014it will really be art.\u00a0 It will be beautiful.\u00a0 It\u2019s a lot of money.\u00a0 This is the step to where you want to be.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Don\u2019t you think Bob sounds a little bit like the Devil right now?\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow, yes.\u00a0 I do, I do.\u00a0 That\u2019s scaring me a little bit, Dennis.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can you put yourself in that place at age 19, age 20, and hearing those words?\u00a0 Would you have said, \u201cYes\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Probably.\u00a0 Probably.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So there was a price?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I think so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, here\u2019s what I want\u2014our listeners to just take a step back and be encouraged by\u2014because there are a lot of moms and dads listening to this broadcast, who are raising sons and daughters who may not be doing just great right now, or they\u2019re beginning the teenage years and they\u2019re already showing signs of their faith deteriorating\u2014they are not keeping Jesus Christ first in all things\u2014and I just want them to hear what you said because the \u201cHound of Heaven\u201d was after you because you\u2019d been raised in the fear of God; you\u2019d been taught the Scripture.\u00a0 That didn\u2019t go away.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The prayers of your mom\u2014maybe, the prayers of other people who were praying for you\u2014God continued to protect you, and even though you didn\u2019t do it all perfectly, you did come out, on the other end, coming back to your faith and becoming much more focused on Christ and having Him as Lord of your life\u2014and having standards and boundaries that protected you from choices that would come your way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really think that what Rachel has done in her book, in her honesty of sharing how she struggled over issues of modesty, and limits, and boundaries\u2014I think a lot of parents are going to find that her book is really helpful in guiding them in coaching their daughters, in dialoging with them, and discussing with them standards in a culture that really has none.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and I think what you\u2019ve done, by being honest and transparent about your own story, is you have taken this\u2014not just to saying, \u201cHere\u2019s what you should do and here\u2019s what you shouldn\u2019t do,\u201d but you\u2019ve talked about how you\u2019ve had to navigate the path yourself and how you\u2019ve age 18, Rachel Lee Carter was offered a modeling contract in New York.\u00a0 Although she had grown up in the church, her faith was not rooted and grounded enough for her to be able to withstand what she faced when she got there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 My Bible teaches that, \u201cThose who call upon the name of the Lord will be saved,\u201d and they\u2019re the only ones who are saved; they are the only ones who will enter into heaven.\u00a0 I knew that, and I remember praying that prayer; but when I got to New York, \u201cThese were really nice people!\u201d\u00a0 These were friendly people; these were people who fed the homeless and did good things.\u00a0 Who was I to now say, \u201cYou\u2019re not going to heaven because you don\u2019t believe in the same Jesus I do and you don\u2019t have Him in your heart\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI began to very much question the faith that I grew up in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, January 9th.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife\u00ae, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Rachel Carter joins us today to share a story about being a fashion model, losing your faith, and compromise.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got to be honest with you\u2014(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This morning, I\u2019m getting up and I\u2019m getting dressed; and I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWell, we\u2019re going to be interviewing Rachel Carter\u2014you know, the fashion model.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So I spent a little longer in the closet kind of looking at\u2014(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, honestly, I look at your shirt and I go, \u201cWhat\u2019s happened to Bob?!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, here\u2019s the conclusion I came to\u2014standing in my closet\u2014I <em>really<\/em> need to go shopping!\u00a0\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s just not much here that you can wear to a radio interview with a fashion model.\u00a0 So I found one thing that had a little polo pony on it; and I thought, \u201cThat\u2019s got to get me some street \u2018cred\u2019 of some kind;\u201d you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think Rachel probably likes it.\u00a0 Do you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do like it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You like his shirt?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Great job, Bob.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve upgraded the look here on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> already, Rachel.\u00a0 We do want to welcome you to the broadcast.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe is a model.\u00a0 She\u2019s also a graduate of Word of Life up in New York.\u00a0 She is married to Daryl; they have two sons and live in North Carolina.\u00a0 She has written a book called <em>Fashioned by Faith.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>It really takes on the issue of modesty.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOut of your experience\u2014you got a whale of a lot of experience\u2014I\u2019m going to ask you a gritty question right off the start.\u00a0 I usually don\u2019t hit it this hard right off the start; but I can tell you can handle it, Rachel.\u00a0 Alright?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you had a daughter, would you want her to be a model like you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You would not want her to have a career in modeling?\u00a0 Why?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Unless God called her there.\u00a0 If God called her there, He would have to let me know that, too\u2014(Laughter)\u2014and after she goes to Bible college and then she goes into the fashion industry.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019d probably have to show credentials, just so you could verify it was God speaking.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s a great question.\u00a0 We have a young woman at our church whose parents came one Sunday and said, \u201cPray for us.\u00a0 Our daughter is going to be moving to New York.\u00a0 She\u2019s got somebody here locally who has recommended her.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe\u2019s a very attractive young woman; and I thought to myself, \u201cOh, my goodness!\u00a0 She\u2019s a sweet, 18-year-old young woman headed off to New York\u201d; and I thought, \u201cDoes she really know what she\u2019s walking into?\u201d because my perception is\u2014it\u2019s really a jungle out there and it\u2019s going to be hard to hang on to a love for Jesus and break into modeling in New York City.\u00a0 Is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 It\u2019s true.\u00a0 That was my experience.\u00a0 I grew up in the church and made a profession of faith when I was seven years old.\u00a0 I was very involved with our church.\u00a0 We were there when the doors were opened, as they say.\u00a0 It was when I was in middle school that I was very involved with the youth group, and we were going on youth trips.\u00a0 I loved it\u2014loved the camaraderie that we had there in the youth group.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, in high school, I used that as an opportunity to be sort of set apart in my own way\u2014but I didn\u2019t want to be <em>too <\/em>set apart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to be that Jesus girl.\u00a0 That scared me.\u00a0 I tried my very best to \u201cfit in\u201d in high school and still manage to be a church girl, going once a week or two to three times a week to church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did \u201cfit in\u201d mean compromise?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it did.\u00a0 I think that there\u2019s no other way that you can really describe that.\u00a0 It meant that I went where people went and I partied like people partied.\u00a0 You know, a funny thing was that I never drank alcohol.\u00a0 I felt like that was my testimony to them:\u00a0 \u201cThey know I\u2019m a Christian, and they know that is why I don\u2019t drink\u2014because of my love for the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe crazy thing is, they never knew that.\u00a0 They never realized that.\u00a0 I met a girl later on in life and she said, \u201cHey, would you like a glass of champagne?\u201d\u00a0 I looked at her and said, \u201cI don\u2019t drink\u2014remember?\u201d\u00a0 She thought back to high school and said, \u201cYou didn\u2019t drink in high school?\u201d\u00a0 All of that time, I thought that I was being that witness of not drinking and that was going to be what set me apart\u2014that she would know I was a Christian.\u00a0 Nobody knew.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t influencing anybody.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was a reason why you didn\u2019t drink.\u00a0 Alcohol was abused.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 My father was an alcoholic.\u00a0 Now, he was a professed Christian; but he had struggled with alcohol as I was growing up.\u00a0 As I saw the destruction that it caused, I ran from it.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI didn\u2019t want any part of it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was tragically killed when I was 14 years old.\u00a0 From that point on, I knew I would never touch it.\u00a0 So I didn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was he abusive as a drunk?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 To your mom?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 To you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, but mostly to my mother and my brother.\u00a0 I was kind of the princess, but he was very verbally abusive and very emotionally abusive in our home.\u00a0 Seeing that destruction and what it does kept me far from ever wanting to go near it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, as a teenager, you ended up getting involved in some of the national contests\u2014beauty pageant contests.\u00a0 How did that work for your modeling Christian values?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know, as a teenager, they\u2019re not really asking you\u2014at least at that time\u2014to compromise on stage.\u00a0 What I was wearing was long evening gowns and things that were modest and well-cut.\u00a0 Growing up, that was my goal; that was kind of my outlet.\u00a0 My \u201cthing\u201d was to do beauty pageants.\u00a0 I loved it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was interesting because, growing up, I went through that middle-age phase of having the acne, and the glasses, and the braces\u2014that awkward stage that a lot of girls go through; but as I came out of that and went into the beauty pageants, that became my niche\u2014my thing that I wanted to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEverything was around going to\u2014trying to make it to \u201cMiss Teen USA\u201d.\u00a0 So when I was 17, I won \u201cMiss Teen North Carolina\u201d and was able to go to \u201cMiss Teen USA.\u201d\u00a0 From there, it just became a natural pattern to go right into the fashion industry; so, I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Again, \u201cMiss Teen USA\u201d, as you said, was appropriate\u2014nothing that you look back on now and say, \u201cI wouldn\u2019t do it again.\u201d\u00a0 Is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Everything was totally above-board.\u00a0 We\u2019re talking early \u201890s.\u00a0 I\u2019m aging myself.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I guess my question is, \u201cHad they been pushing the line at that time and you were a young 17-year-old girl, would that have been an issue for you?\u201d or do you think you would have said, \u201cOh well, this is just what you have to do\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would have failed that test.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were already headed in a direction that was, \u201cI\u2019m in pursuit of something more important to me than walking with Jesus.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had already made those decisions and compromised.\u00a0 You know, I think there are a lot of parents listening to you today who are raising daughters, as well as sons, attempting to embed within them convictions, and standards, and boundaries\u2014that build some fences around their lives as they encounter this culture. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWould there have been any way your parents could have helped you or come alongside you?\u00a0 Could they have helped you establish some of those boundaries?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think so.\u00a0 My mom\u2014you know, she was a single parent.\u00a0 I think it was hard for her, just trying to navigate this life as a single mom.\u00a0 She became more of a friend of mine, and we really depended on each other.\u00a0 We still do.\u00a0 We\u2019re very close; but I think if my dad would have been there\u2014to kind of be that sounding board and say, \u201cNo, these are the guidelines.\u00a0 This is what you\u2019re going to do; this is what you\u2019re not going to do.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to put my foot down here because I love you.\u201d\u00a0 I think that might have registered completely differently with me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, my mom\u2019s not a guy.\u00a0 She\u2019s not wired like a guy.\u00a0 She wouldn\u2019t have known certain things to keep me from.\u00a0 She just tried to protect me the best she could\u2014getting to \u201cMiss Teen USA\u201d and then being able to move on into the fashion industry\u2014of course, she was very proud of me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I hear you saying, Rachel, is\u2014a young lady, at that point in her life, dealing with all of the choices that you had to deal with, needed parents to engage your life\u2014your standards\u2014and speak with you and talk with you.\u00a0 Certainly, you needed a parent who was a friend; but you didn\u2019t need your mom\u00a0 <em>just<\/em> tobe your friend.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You needed someone to, as you said, call you up\u2014call you to keep your standards high and not allow the culture to shape your standards totally.\u00a0 I fear, today,\u00a0 what\u2019s happening with a lot of parents is\u2014they\u2019re allowing their kids to push them out of their lives.\u00a0 As a result, they\u2019re leaving their children much more vulnerable.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s true.\u00a0 That\u2019s true.\u00a0 I think if there were anybody involved in my life, whether it had been my parents, or a youth pastor, or a school counselor, or a friend from church, or a neighbor, or somebody that could have really held me accountable with some of those decisions\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the thing is, it comes in so subtly.\u00a0 When you just do a beauty pageant, like I said\u2014it iss long evening gowns and everything\u2019s fine.\u00a0 Except, you have to remember, that that\u2019s <em>all <\/em>about appearance\u2014it\u2019s all about appearance\u2014all about appearance.\u00a0 So that was beginning to set me up for starting to make decisions that were all about appearance. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEventually, it would be whatever it cost.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s where somebody could have come in and said, \u201cHey, let\u2019s take inventory of this and see where this is going.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, at 17 or 18 years old, does your mom buy you a ticket to New York and you\u2019re off on your own in the big city, trying to break into the modeling industry?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, sort of.\u00a0 I was discovered, and we had an opportunity to go up and meet the agent.\u00a0 My mom and I flew to New York.\u00a0 We met the agent; we stayed in her home.\u00a0 She took us around the city a little bit.\u00a0 We saw that it was a legitimate organization; and I had an opportunity to go to castings, where I would meet people.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even have a portfolio; I had nothing.\u00a0 I was just there as kind of an introduction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Teen<\/em> magazine wanted to book me for the next day.\u00a0 They asked, \u201cCould we change our ticket?\u00a0 Could I stay and do the photo shoot the next day?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 So it was, \u201cYeah!\u00a0 This is great!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, I\u2019m picturing you as an 18-year-old girl, being shown the skyscrapers, the streets of New York, the big-time life that is there\u2014the big city.\u00a0 You had to be overwhelmed\u2014just kind of wowed, coming from North Carolina to the big city.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was\u2014absolutely!\u00a0 It was the first time I had ever been to New York.\u00a0 Exactly\u2014you nailed it.\u00a0 I was this wide-eyed country girl moving\u2014or at least, even going to this concrete jungle and seeing this for the first time\u2014and then, having <em>Teen <\/em>magazine, which was the magazine of choice at the time, wanting to book me for a photo shoot.\u00a0 I mean\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was your mom \u201cwowed,\u201d too?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 Yes, absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, it\u2019s like dreams come true.\u00a0 This doesn\u2019t happen to the typical girl who shows up in New York.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You found the glass slipper!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the next day you\u2019re at the shoot and everything goes great?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I do the photo shoot.\u00a0 All goes well, and we made a decision basically then that, \u201cWell, I guess this means I can forgo college for the moment and move to Manhattan.\u201d\u00a0 So, I sold my car\u2014went back home and sold my car\u2014and had about $4,500 to move with me to New York.\u00a0 That would be what I was going to get started on.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 By yourself?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 By myself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No way!\u00a0 So where was your mom in all of this?\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Was she cheering you on, \u201cGo girl, go!\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think she was a little bit nervous, you know; but she had met my bookers and she knew that, at the moment, I would be living in their home.\u00a0 When I went there, right after high school\u2014I graduated\u2014and when I went there, I was going to be living in their home with them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I did that, and my mom saw that I was doing well, and that I had accountability, and everything was good, everything seemed okay.\u00a0 Shortly after that, I decided that, \u201cI am ready to move into Manhattan,\u201d because I was in Queens\u2014move into Manhattan, where real models lived.\u00a0 That\u2019s where things got a little sketchy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell us about a single girl, on her own, in Manhattan, breaking into the modeling business\u2014living where the models live\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Whose faith is not first and foremost\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not at the forefront.\u00a0 What does life look like?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I was overwhelmed, like you say.\u00a0 I know that I had, really, the world at my fingertips.\u00a0 I could stay out as late as I wanted to stay out.\u00a0 Nobody was asking me when I came in or checking their watch.\u00a0 I was on my own.\u00a0 I could go rollerblading around Central Park at 3:00 in the morning if I felt like it.\u00a0 I could do anything\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hold it!\u00a0 Hold it!\u00a0 Did you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, I did!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 In Central Park, in the middle of the night?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know; it is funny.\u00a0\u00a0 My brother used to say, \u201cYou know, Rachel, what they say about Central Park\u2014\u2018It\u2019s beautiful by day; deadly by night.\u2019\u00a0 What are you doing!?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cHey, I\u2019m going 20 miles an hour; who\u2019s going to catch me?!\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 Wow!\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 But that was the kind of mentality.\u00a0 I was let loose.\u00a0 I could get into bars, where I shouldn\u2019t have been allowed to be in.\u00a0 I could get into clubs, where I shouldn\u2019t have been able to be in.\u00a0 I was hanging out with people who did not know the Lord.\u00a0 I had nobody telling me to get up and go to Sunday school in the morning on Sunday morning.\u00a0 So, the church\u2014that kind of went by the wayside.\u00a0 That was not an important issue for me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think I grew up in the Bible belt and I felt like, \u201cThis is why I do what I do.\u00a0 I go to church because that is what everybody else does.\u201d\u00a0 But when you\u2019re living in Manhattan\u2014my friends weren\u2019t going to church; so, I didn\u2019t go to church.\u00a0 My friends were going to clubs; so, that\u2019s what I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the other advertisers began to line up\u2014the magazines, the catalogs, and the different types of photo shoots.\u00a0 Name some of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I worked for<em> Cover Girl\u00ae<\/em>, Revlon<em>\u00ae<\/em>; I did Tommy Hilfiger<em>\u00ae<\/em>, DKNY<em>\u00ae<\/em>; lots of clients.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there, at all, a still, small voice?\u2014a voice of conviction inside you going, \u201cRachel?!\u201d\u00a0 Or had you so tuned out from that, that even if the Spirit was tapping, you weren\u2019t listening?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had so tuned out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was anything going on with you spiritually?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 No; because, you know, I had always grown up in the church.\u00a0 I knew that, you know, my Bible teaches that, \u201cThose who call upon the name of the Lord will be saved,\u201d and that only those who have Jesus Christ in their heart\u2014living in them\u2014they are the only ones who are saved.\u00a0 They are the only ones who will enter into heaven.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew that, and I remember praying that prayer; but when I got to New York, and I had all these other friends of different nationalities, different backgrounds, different faiths\u2014a lot of people involved with New Age religion, or Buddhism, or other things\u2014these were <em>really<\/em> nice people.\u00a0 These were <em>friendly<\/em> people.\u00a0 These were people who fed the homeless and did good things.\u00a0 Who was I to now say, \u201cYou\u2019re not going to heaven because you don\u2019t believe in the same Jesus I do and you don\u2019t have Him in your heart\u201d?\u00a0 I began to very much question the faith that I grew up in. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s an echelon in modeling that is\u2014I mean, I think of what they refer to as the \u201csupermodels,\u201d some of the big names that we hear about and know.\u00a0 Was your eye on that prize?\u00a0 Did you want to be Kate Moss, or Christie Brinkley, or one of those known-name models?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 I mean, just like when I started doing pageants when I was 12 years old, wanting to make it to \u201cMiss Teen USA\u201d\u2014I mean, that was the goal.\u00a0 When I got to New York, the goal was \u201csupermodel.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What does it take to get there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Take your clothes off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You could not be a committed Christian and get to that caliber?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, my agent had told me that she wanted to develop a supermodel that never had to take her clothes off.\u00a0 She said, \u201cMaybe it can be you.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, I\u2019m not taking my clothes off, so whether I make it or not\u2014if I do a couple hundred thousand a year or if I do a couple million a year\u2014\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, that\u2019s kind of the difference.\u00a0 That top two percent of models, that are working models, can make a really good living; but I was okay with just a couple hundred thousand a year.\u00a0 \u201cHey, I\u2019m 18 years old!\u201d\u00a0 That sounded pretty good!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you get to keep your clothes on, yes; that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was good for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I\u2019m wondering, just listening to your story, is, \u201cWhere did the standard come from?\u2014where, even though you said you were compromising; but you weren\u2019t in a free-fall.\u00a0 You weren\u2019t throwing it <em>all<\/em> away.\u00a0 You had your limits.\u00a0 Where did that come from?\u00a0 Was it the Christian home that you grew up in that protected you at that point?\u2014the church you went to?\u2014that portion of the Bible that you knew?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think so.\u00a0 It was that, but it was also that I\u2019m very stubborn.\u00a0 So, if somebody told me that I <em>had<\/em> to do something in order to make it, I was going to find a way where I was going to show you, \u201cThat\u2019s not the case.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was just \u201cicky\u201d to me to ever have to take off my clothes for anybody else to see me.\u00a0\u00a0 That was just\u2014I\u2019m very thankful for that.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure if that came from just growing up in my home of a Christian upbringing or if it was something that is just instilled in me.\u00a0 The reason I say that is\u2014that I\u2019m not convinced that when I moved to New York, I was a born-again Christian.\u00a0 I\u2019m <em>not convinced<\/em> because I know that the decisions I was making, living there, were very counter to what Christianity is about.\u00a0 I could not make these decisions and call myself a child of God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it was actually while I was there, questioning my faith, and seeing that all these other people who were good, solid people and doing good things and not of the same faith as me, that as I began to question my faith, \u201cHow can I say that I believe what I believe?\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t even measure up.\u00a0 They\u2019re doing better things than I\u2019m doing.\u201d\u00a0 As I began to question that, I began to fall further and further away from the faith that I grew up in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want to imagine a scene where your manager calls you and says, \u201cRachel, I\u2019ve got <em>wonderful <\/em>news.\u00a0 <em>Vanity Fair<\/em>\u00ae wants you on the cover, and they\u2019ve asked Annie Leibovitz to take the photography.\u00a0 The only thing is, you will have to remove your top; but your arms will be positioned in such a <em>tasteful<\/em> way\u2014it will really be art.\u00a0 It will be beautiful.\u00a0 It\u2019s a lot of money.\u00a0 This is the step to where you want to be.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Don\u2019t you think Bob sounds a little bit like the Devil right now?\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow, yes.\u00a0 I do, I do.\u00a0 That\u2019s scaring me a little bit, Dennis.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can you put yourself in that place at age 19, age 20, and hearing those words?\u00a0 Would you have said, \u201cYes\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Probably.\u00a0 Probably.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So there was a price?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I think so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, here\u2019s what I want\u2014our listeners to just take a step back and be encouraged by\u2014because there are a lot of moms and dads listening to this broadcast, who are raising sons and daughters who may not be doing just great right now, or they\u2019re beginning the teenage years and they\u2019re already showing signs of their faith deteriorating\u2014they are not keeping Jesus Christ first in all things\u2014and I just want them to hear what you said because the \u201cHound of Heaven\u201d was after you because you\u2019d been raised in the fear of God; you\u2019d been taught the Scripture.\u00a0 That didn\u2019t go away.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rachel:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The prayers of your mom\u2014maybe, the prayers of other people who were praying for you\u2014God continued to protect you, and even though you didn\u2019t do it all perfectly, you did come out, on the other end, coming back to your faith and becoming much more focused on Christ and having Him as Lord of your life\u2014and having standards and boundaries that protected you from choices that would come your way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really think that what Rachel has done in her book, in her honesty of sharing how she struggled over issues of modesty, and limits, and boundaries\u2014I think a lot of parents are going to find that her book is really helpful in guiding them in coaching their daughters, in dialoging with them, and discussing with them standards in a culture that really has none.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and I think what you\u2019ve done, by being honest and transparent about your own story, is you have taken this\u2014not just to saying, \u201cHere\u2019s what you should do and here\u2019s what you shouldn\u2019t do,\u201d but you\u2019ve talked about how you\u2019ve had to navigate the path yourself and how you\u2019ve
