Wellons:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 We all live on a treadmill, and it is going <em>so<\/em> fast, and one of the things I \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\thope the whole idea of <em>Getting Away to Get it Together<\/em> (which is not really\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\toriginal to us, it's really original to Jesus Christ\u2014He got away on numerous \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\toccasions); one of the things, it begins to move a marriage from the reactive\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tapproach to that treadmill to a proactive \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you do Christmas by Skype?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we did a little of that.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to do a little travel as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s always nice to connect with family, even when they\u2019re scattered all\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tacross the country as your kids and grandkids are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Laura\u2019s home from Washington, D.C., and we\u2019re glad to have her home \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tfor a couple of days.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to hang in the area, but also slip out for a \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tcouple of days here and there and see some of the other kids around the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tcountry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s a busy week here at FamilyLife because we\u2019re down to the final \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tweek of the year.\u00a0 Actually, some interesting things happened over the last week.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome of our listeners know about this matching fund that was established back \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tat the beginning of the month.\u00a0 It started off as a $2.5 million matching fund, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twhich we thought, \u201cThat\u2019s just amazing!,\u201d but it grew.\u00a0 It became a $3.5 million \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmatching fund. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And now it\u2019s the biggest ever in the history of our ministry. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Four plus million dollars.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 Some folks are probably asking now, \u201cWhy is this thing \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tcontinuing to grow?\u201d\u00a0 Well, you know what, some people make decisions when \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthey want to make decisions.\u00a0 They also say, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I believe in what \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyou guys are doing and I want to stand with you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo if you listen to up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe're going to talk to a couple who have a passion for marriage; actually, a \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tcouple you went to college with.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 A couple of friends!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don't know what was going on at the University of Arkansas at the time that you \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twere there in college, but it just turns out there were a lot of folks who had a \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\theart for Christ and ultimately had a heart for marriage and a heart for families \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand a heart for marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No doubt about it.\u00a0 I mean, there was a bunch of us who rallied together\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthere at the University of Arkansas, otherwise known as the \"Harvard of the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOzarks.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter) \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were really a part of what I would consider to be a genuine revival, and I don't \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmean that in the sense of a meeting, I mean that in the sense of God doing \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tsomething special among college students, and there were a number of us who \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twent on to full-time Christian ministry, to seminaries \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you a \u201cJesus person\u201d back then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yeah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were a Jesus person, too?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jesus people had no shame in proclaiming Christ, and Bill and Carolyn \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twere among those and have become great friends of Barbara and mine.\u00a0 For \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ta number of years Bill was my pastor at Fellowship Bible Church.\u00a0 Bill and \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCarolyn, along with four other couples, Barbara and I included, helped start \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFellowship Bible Church back in 1977.\u00a0 We started a church in a living room of \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tour friends', Don and Sally Meredith, and went on to see that church grow to \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmore than 6,000 attendees every Sunday with who knows how many hundreds \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tof\u00a0 ministries it's spawned, and now how many churches have you started, Bill,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tas a result?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 We have about 40 churches in our church planting network, or partners, but\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twhen you ask that question today, I always think about there are 22 that have \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tactually gone through a residency training program that we've planted, and we're \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tvery excited about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, and I am, too, because the church is really about the right stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt's about proclaiming Christ and then helping people find their niche of ministry \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand how to have an outreach to the community.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBill and Carolyn have teamed up with FamilyLife to write a \u2013 not really a book, but it's a - weekend getaway.\u00a0 It's called <em>Getting Away to Get It Together<\/em>, and it's designed to help couples reconnect in the midst of this fast-paced life and, you know, Bob, we interviewed Bill originally during the very first week of our broadcast.\u00a0 You and I had to scramble.\u00a0 We were told we were going to be on the air in two weeks, and we had no programs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right, and no guests \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2026 no guests or anything, and so Bill was <em>alive<\/em> and had some things to\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tsay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He met our guest qualifications.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He did, and he was among our first 10 broadcasts that we taped back \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tin October of 1992, and then went on the air in November, and I thought we'd just \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\thave some fun, because what he was talking about <em>then<\/em> is what he's still talking\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tabout <em>now<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We did see if the engineers could find the old audio, and you've got a\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tportion of that interview, don't you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[taped broadcast from 1992)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 Both of us were very interested in sort of just getting away to take stock of \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twhere we were.\u00a0\u00a0 Ten years into the marriage, and a couple of kids, and life was \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tpicking up; the pace was picking up, very busy, and we just wanted to get away \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand take stock.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things that I would say we sort of fell into was that Carolyn took her \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tcalendar, and I took my calendar, and that was one of the first things we did, is\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twe began to exchange that information \u2013 just to sort of figure out where everyone\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tis and where everyone was headed, and that was really the beginning of the\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tplanning retreats that then we determined to begin repeating every year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[tape ends]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It's kind of fun to listen back to that.\u00a0 I remember calendars, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Notice they didn't play our voice, Bob.\u00a0 But it was fun, because I do \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\trecall you guys, Carolyn, getting away during those years, and I assume we \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tprobably copied you because we got away as well and it's, frankly, how we \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tsurvived raising six children because the stresses that you were talking about 13 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyears ago were very real in the process of raising children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it's true, you know, you can live in the same house with someone \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand even talk and communicate, but you don't have to connect.\u00a0 The reason \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthat we decided that we needed to get away was to make sure that we were \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tconnecting on a heart-to-heart level, and that we were making sure that the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\timportant things and priorities in life were not being left on the sidelines in the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\turgency of life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Many times Barbara and I would get away on these planning weekends \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tlike you guys had.\u00a0 We'd pull out our calendars, and it really felt like a business \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmeeting sometimes.\u00a0 I mean, we did connect emotionally and relationally, but \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthere were issues around those calendars that if you didn't address them, you're \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tgoing to be behind the eight ball constantly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They're going to come back and bite you, aren't they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 All the time, and I couldn't help but listen to you, Carolyn, and thinking \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\thow Barbara would agree with you \u2013 they were times when we were able to stop \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthe pace of life, sit down on a couch, drink a cup of hot cider and look at the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tcalendars and talk or read a book and interrupt one another after we'd been \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\treading for an hour or so, or take a walk, and they really were informal times for \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyou guys initially, right?\u00a0 They weren't all that structured.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right, they weren't that structured, but one thing that we tried to do \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tparticularly is, like, on the first night or the first morning, we love to review \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmilestones from the last six months or so, and that starts the whole time away \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ttogether on a positive note instead of just tackling the issues and the problems \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthat you're facing and the decisions that you have to make.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI love doing that because it forces you to look back on what's important to you for \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthe last six months or so, and not necessarily what other people would think \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twould be important, but what was meaningful to <em>you<\/em> and to celebrate God's \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tfaithfulness in something like that.\u00a0 It's really an important way to start before you \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tget into the nitty-gritty of the decision-making.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, and problem-solving and all that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can you give us some illustrations of what that looks like? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, I was just thinking of one and kind of how that whole discussion and\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tproject on memorial stones even got started.\u00a0 It really got started out of the Book \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tof Joshua in chapter 4, where Joshua was getting ready to cross the Jordan \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRiver and go over into Jericho, and they cross the river, and they stack up some \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tstones, and the purpose of the stones was that so future generations would \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tremember about the faithfulness of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I'll take you back to one specific.\u00a0 We have loved to go on retreats in the off-\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tseason, and part of that is just because the rates are so good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That's right, buddy, I'm with you on that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 And the places that we've gone have not been as crowded and also it really \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twas conducive to a great time of connecting as a couple.\u00a0 But in one of those we \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twent to a little town in Arkansas called Heber Springs, and we stayed there for \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tparts of three days, two nights, and parts of three days.\u00a0 In one of our earliest \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\titerations of the memorial stones, we actually just opened the Bible to Psalm 103 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twhere we are all told not to forget any of the benefits of God in our life.\u00a0 And you \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tcan read through them \u2013 He pardons, and He heals, and He redeems, and He \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tseparates your sin as far as the east from the west and all that.\u00a0 And so we went \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthrough those first to celebrate some spiritual milestones.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then off of that, we thought, \"Well, God has been so faithful there, let's just \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tlook in our own lives, take a few minutes separately and just write down a half a \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdozen or more, and they could be anything.\u00a0 They could be a project you \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tcompleted or discipling a child or a decision at work or a verse in the Scripture \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthat meant a lot to you.\u00a0 We would write those down and then come together \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand share those and, very importantly, explain why those memorial stones were \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmeaningful to our heart.\u00a0 And it's just a very simple way of engaging and having \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tkind of a heart-to-heart conversation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to take both of you back to the very first, again, because I think most \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tof our listeners are probably thinking, \"This is a foreign concept.\u00a0 We've never \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdone anything like this.\"\u00a0 Don't you think that's true?\u00a0 Most couples don't take the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ttime and do stuff like this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right, I agree.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And when they stop and think about doing it, the first thing that comes to \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmind for many of them are all of the obstacles to doing it.\u00a0 You've got to get \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbabysitting for the kids.\u00a0 I mean, when you started you had children at home, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tright?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That's just not something that you pack a bag and leave.\u00a0 You've got a lot\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tof work just to get away, don't you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, absolutely, and it's hard.\u00a0 In fact, sometimes we would leave town, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand we would look at each other and say, \"Is this worth it?\u00a0 It's just so hard, is \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthis worth it?\"\u00a0 And, yes, absolutely it is.\u00a0 And we would get a young couple from \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthe church or some other family that would help us with the children at that time \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand, yes, it's hard work, but it's well worth it.\u00a0 It's a great investment in your \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tfamily.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But was it Bill who came to you first and said, \"I think we need a weekend \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\taway where we could just clear our schedules and get some time together?\"\u00a0 Or \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twas it your idea?\u00a0 Who dreamed it up and \u2013 do you remember?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you remember?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don't remember.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don't either.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 We'll just have to both take credit for that one, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that when you asked the question a minute ago, was this \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tsomething you pre-planned or was it something that you went out of town with \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyour tongues wagging out.\u00a0 I think that we were probably burned out at that time \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand said, \"We've got to get a handle on life here.\u00a0 We're losing ground, and we've \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tgot some issues to talk about, and we need to get out of town for a couple of \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdays and talk about that.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, I would have to say that would describe Barbara and me among \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthose first times we got away \u2013 it was survival.\u00a0 We had some of our worst \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\targuments on the drive to get away, because we were tired, we were arriving too \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tlate on a Friday night.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, that's one of the things we did.\u00a0 We decided we would lengthen it and \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\thave three nights away because by the time you've had the second night away,\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyou're actually starting to think again with a clear head.\u00a0 But for us it was a matter \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tof not merely surviving the schedule but getting back in charge of the schedule \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand the pace of life and our values and on one another's team and not getting \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdown on one another.\u00a0 The thing I like about the idea of sharing how God's been\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tgood to you in recent months is that gets couples off of the negative and on the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tpositive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know there are probably couples listening right now that say, \"Why, we couldn't think of anything.\u00a0 I don't think God's been very good to us.\"\u00a0 Well, part of that is the pace of life.\u00a0 If you got away and had a chance to think about it for an hour, I think you might be surprised at where God has shown up in your marriage and your family, and how He's benefiting you.\u00a0 But what happens is we get so focused on the negative and usually it's in your spouse and how they disappointed you and what these weekends have done for you guys as you got away was lift your eyes back up toward God and helped you appreciate one another in some fresh ways.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 That's right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, my mind sort of went back a little bit to those early days, and I \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twas a young pastor in a growing church.\u00a0 We had very young children, and our \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tschedules were getting busier, and there were lots of things that I had never \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdone before and was learning on a very fast learning curve.\u00a0 At times it was really \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdifficult.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that really is one of the discoveries, Dennis, you brought up just about the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ttreadmill.\u00a0 We all live on a treadmill, and it is going so fast, and one of the things I \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\thope the whole idea of <em>Getting Away to Get It Together<\/em> (which is not really \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\toriginal to us, it's really original to Jesus Christ \u2013 He got away to get His life \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ttogether on numerous occasions); but one of the things that you said a minute \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tago is that it begins to move a marriage from the reactive approach to that \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ttreadmill to a proactive approach.\u00a0 And, as you said, you cannot imagine just the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tsimple discussions and ideas that you will have that will put your marriage back \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ton track.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did your first weekends away, as you started making this a practice in your \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmarriage, but back to those first ones \u2013 did you have an agenda in mind other \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthan let's just relax, have some romance, you know, reconnect as a couple?\u00a0 I \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tcan see couples saying, \"Let's take a couple of days and get away, and we'll just \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\trelax,\" or did you have \u2013 \"We've got some things we need to accomplish, and I \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twant to make sure we get through this before we get home.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think it was a combination of both aspects of what you just said.\u00a0 There\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twere some things that we wanted to do.\u00a0 We wanted to address our schedule.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe wanted to talk about our children.\u00a0 But it wasn't like the annual business \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tretreat.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You didn't pass out an agenda to your wife?<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, and, of course, again, going back to those early days, from a work ethic \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tstandpoint, the idea of me taking off time in the middle of the week to go spend \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tparts of three days or so with my wife \u2013 I had to kind of overcome the inertia of, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\"Well, gosh, whoever does that?\" for openers.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut as we first started doing it, we did fun things on the evening.\u00a0 Like Carolyn \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tsaid, we didn't start real heavy.\u00a0 We'd go have a nice dinner, and a lot of times \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twe would ask fun questions, like, \"If you could go anywhere in the world, your \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdream vacation, with any other couple and spend a few days, where would you \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tgo, who would go with you and why?\"\u00a0 \"What if you had $10 million?\u00a0 What would \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyou do?\"\u00a0 Just fun questions where you were just interacting at a very easy level \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tover dinner, having fun, and just kind of getting into each other's brains and\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdreams about how you'd answer those.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I happen to know that you are about to go off on one of these weekends \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twith your wife in the next couple of days, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Actually, with Bill and together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 I haven't taken any notes yet.\u00a0 The notes will be taken \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tduring the weekend.\u00a0 But, you know, I've found that Barbara, as a woman, has a \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tgreat need for focus, and we, as men, have a great need to get off that treadmill \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthat Bill was talking about and give our wives some relational focus.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd this weekend package, this book, <em>Getting Away to Get It Together<\/em>, lays it \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tout.\u00a0 You don't have to be an expert in it, because Bill and Carolyn have laid it \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tout.\u00a0 He has the checklist.\u00a0 Bill is very thorough, and I promise you, the checklist \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tabout what you need to take with you and what needs to be anticipated and how \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyou need to approach it, you can make this as structured or as unstructured as \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyou want to make it.\u00a0 It needs to fit the needs of your marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, one of the little areas I like about this is if you need time to relax, then here are some things to do.\u00a0 If you need to really talk about some issues, then here is the place in the book to go to and do these projects. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you customize it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it's like a smorgasbord.\u00a0 And, frankly, there is more than one \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tweekend in here.\u00a0 I mean, this is \u2013 wouldn't you say, Bill, probably a half a dozen \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tweekends right here?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 Easily, and the good thing about it is you can repeat a lot of the concepts.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tReally, if you think about the projects or the concepts in the book, they are really \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tjust channels of communication.\u00a0 They are just providing a little bit of structure to \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tinvite a couple to be able to talk about some meaningful things in their \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\trelationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember when we were first married, and Carolyn and I would sit down to have a meaningful talk or even on those early retreats, Bob, there would be a lot of times where I would go, \"Well, what am I going to talk about?\u00a0 I've got to come up with something.\"\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, in part, it's just \u2013 for the husband, to me, it gives you a tool to have some\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tleadership resources to get things started.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you mentioned the memorial stones as one of the things that you and \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCarolyn have talked about.\u00a0 It's not like, as a couple, you go, \"Okay, we've had \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthat talk.\u00a0 Now we never need to discuss those things again for the rest of our \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tlives.\"\u00a0 You can revisit that subject every time you go out or every third weekend \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tor every fifth \u2013 whenever it's appropriate for your marriage, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly, and another one that comes to mind is one we call \"Child Talk,\" \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twhere basically you're just evaluating where your children are.\u00a0 And it's a real \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tsimple project to do, but because \u2013 same issue \u2013 your children are growing older \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand so forth.\u00a0 They have different needs and there are different things you want \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tto zero in and focus on as a couple, and so it's very helpful in doing that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, you know we've got a lot of listeners who are thinking, \"Okay, first of\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tall, trying to find a weekend is tough.\u00a0 Secondly, the expense of getting \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbabysitting, getting away, going someplace\" \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Farm the kids out and stay home \u2013 although I would say this about that \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2013 if you stay home, the tendency is to look around at the wallpaper that's peeling \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tin the bathroom, at the stuff in the yard or in the garage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don't think staying home would work for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it wouldn't for Barbara.\u00a0 I think I could much better than \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ther, but you get distracted by the things that distract you daily \u2013 television, newspaper, the Internet, I mean, on and on it goes, and what you need to do is turn your cell phone off, don't take your computer with you unless you agree you're not going to go online.\u00a0 And if you go someplace, one of the best places we went to didn't have TV.\u00a0 It was a fully modern little cabin stuck away in Northern Arkansas.\u00a0 It was a first-class place, but it didn't have any television to distract you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And Barbara was probably really glad about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She was, she was.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think the point is, couples have got to make this a preventive \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmaintenance priority for your marriage.\u00a0 You're really investing in the future \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\thealth of your marriage, and a weekend like this away \u2013 you may look at it and \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tgo, \"We just don't have the time,\" or \"We don't have the money,\" or \"We don't \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\thave the resources.\"\u00a0 You need to find some creative ways to make that happen \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tin order for your marriage to have that preventive booster shot that gets it well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s always nice to connect with family, even when they\u2019re scattered all\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tacross the country as your kids and grandkids are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Laura\u2019s home from Washington, D.C., and we\u2019re glad to have her home \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tfor a couple of days.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to hang in the area, but also slip out for a \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tcouple of days here and there and see some of the other kids around the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tcountry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s a busy week here at FamilyLife because we\u2019re down to the final \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tweek of the year.\u00a0 Actually, some interesting things happened over the last week.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome of our listeners know about this matching fund that was established back \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tat the beginning of the month.\u00a0 It started off as a $2.5 million matching fund, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And now it\u2019s the biggest ever in the history of our ministry. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Four plus million dollars.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 Some folks are probably asking now, \u201cWhy is this thing \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 A couple of friends!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don't know what was going on at the University of Arkansas at the time that you \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twere there in college, but it just turns out there were a lot of folks who had a \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\theart for Christ and ultimately had a heart for marriage and a heart for families \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand a heart for marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No doubt about it.\u00a0 I mean, there was a bunch of us who rallied together\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthere at the University of Arkansas, otherwise known as the \"Harvard of the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOzarks.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter) \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were really a part of what I would consider to be a genuine revival, and I don't \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmean that in the sense of a meeting, I mean that in the sense of God doing \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tsomething special among college students, and there were a number of us who \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twent on to full-time Christian ministry, to seminaries \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you a \u201cJesus person\u201d back then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yeah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were a Jesus person, too?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jesus people had no shame in proclaiming Christ, and Bill and Carolyn \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twere among those and have become great friends of Barbara and mine.\u00a0 For \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ta number of years Bill was my pastor at Fellowship Bible Church.\u00a0 Bill and \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCarolyn, along with four other couples, Barbara and I included, helped start \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFellowship Bible Church back in 1977.\u00a0 We started a church in a living room of \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tour friends', Don and Sally Meredith, and went on to see that church grow to \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmore than 6,000 attendees every Sunday with who knows how many hundreds \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tof\u00a0 ministries it's spawned, and now how many churches have you started, Bill,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tas a result?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 We have about 40 churches in our church planting network, or partners, but\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twhen you ask that question today, I always think about there are 22 that have \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tactually gone through a residency training program that we've planted, and we're \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tvery excited about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, and I am, too, because the church is really about the right stuff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt's about proclaiming Christ and then helping people find their niche of ministry \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand how to have an outreach to the community.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBill and Carolyn have teamed up with FamilyLife to write a \u2013 not really a book, but it's a - weekend getaway.\u00a0 It's called <em>Getting Away to Get It Together<\/em>, and it's designed to help couples reconnect in the midst of this fast-paced life and, you know, Bob, we interviewed Bill originally during the very first week of our broadcast.\u00a0 You and I had to scramble.\u00a0 We were told we were going to be on the air in two weeks, and we had no programs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right, and no guests \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2026 no guests or anything, and so Bill was <em>alive<\/em> and had some things to\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tsay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He met our guest qualifications.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He did, and he was among our first 10 broadcasts that we taped back \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tin October of 1992, and then went on the air in November, and I thought we'd just \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\thave some fun, because what he was talking about <em>then<\/em> is what he's still talking\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tabout <em>now<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We did see if the engineers could find the old audio, and you've got a\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tportion of that interview, don't you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[taped broadcast from 1992)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 Both of us were very interested in sort of just getting away to take stock of \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twhere we were.\u00a0\u00a0 Ten years into the marriage, and a couple of kids, and life was \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tpicking up; the pace was picking up, very busy, and we just wanted to get away \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand take stock.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the things that I would say we sort of fell into was that Carolyn took her \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tcalendar, and I took my calendar, and that was one of the first things we did, is\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twe began to exchange that information \u2013 just to sort of figure out where everyone\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tis and where everyone was headed, and that was really the beginning of the\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tplanning retreats that then we determined to begin repeating every year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[tape ends]\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It's kind of fun to listen back to that.\u00a0 I remember calendars, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Notice they didn't play our voice, Bob.\u00a0 But it was fun, because I do \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\trecall you guys, Carolyn, getting away during those years, and I assume we \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tprobably copied you because we got away as well and it's, frankly, how we \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tsurvived raising six children because the stresses that you were talking about 13 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyears ago were very real in the process of raising children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it's true, you know, you can live in the same house with someone \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand even talk and communicate, but you don't have to connect.\u00a0 The reason \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthat we decided that we needed to get away was to make sure that we were \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tconnecting on a heart-to-heart level, and that we were making sure that the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\timportant things and priorities in life were not being left on the sidelines in the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\turgency of life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Many times Barbara and I would get away on these planning weekends \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tlike you guys had.\u00a0 We'd pull out our calendars, and it really felt like a business \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmeeting sometimes.\u00a0 I mean, we did connect emotionally and relationally, but \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthere were issues around those calendars that if you didn't address them, you're \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tgoing to be behind the eight ball constantly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They're going to come back and bite you, aren't they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 All the time, and I couldn't help but listen to you, Carolyn, and thinking \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\thow Barbara would agree with you \u2013 they were times when we were able to stop \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthe pace of life, sit down on a couch, drink a cup of hot cider and look at the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tcalendars and talk or read a book and interrupt one another after we'd been \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\treading for an hour or so, or take a walk, and they really were informal times for \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyou guys initially, right?\u00a0 They weren't all that structured.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right, they weren't that structured, but one thing that we tried to do \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tparticularly is, like, on the first night or the first morning, we love to review \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmilestones from the last six months or so, and that starts the whole time away \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ttogether on a positive note instead of just tackling the issues and the problems \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthat you're facing and the decisions that you have to make.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI love doing that because it forces you to look back on what's important to you for \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthe last six months or so, and not necessarily what other people would think \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twould be important, but what was meaningful to <em>you<\/em> and to celebrate God's \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tfaithfulness in something like that.\u00a0 It's really an important way to start before you \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tget into the nitty-gritty of the decision-making.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, and problem-solving and all that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can you give us some illustrations of what that looks like? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, I was just thinking of one and kind of how that whole discussion and\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tproject on memorial stones even got started.\u00a0 It really got started out of the Book \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tof Joshua in chapter 4, where Joshua was getting ready to cross the Jordan \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRiver and go over into Jericho, and they cross the river, and they stack up some \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tstones, and the purpose of the stones was that so future generations would \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tremember about the faithfulness of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I'll take you back to one specific.\u00a0 We have loved to go on retreats in the off-\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tseason, and part of that is just because the rates are so good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That's right, buddy, I'm with you on that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 And the places that we've gone have not been as crowded and also it really \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twas conducive to a great time of connecting as a couple.\u00a0 But in one of those we \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twent to a little town in Arkansas called Heber Springs, and we stayed there for \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tparts of three days, two nights, and parts of three days.\u00a0 In one of our earliest \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\titerations of the memorial stones, we actually just opened the Bible to Psalm 103 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twhere we are all told not to forget any of the benefits of God in our life.\u00a0 And you \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tcan read through them \u2013 He pardons, and He heals, and He redeems, and He \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tseparates your sin as far as the east from the west and all that.\u00a0 And so we went \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthrough those first to celebrate some spiritual milestones.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then off of that, we thought, \"Well, God has been so faithful there, let's just \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tlook in our own lives, take a few minutes separately and just write down a half a \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdozen or more, and they could be anything.\u00a0 They could be a project you \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tcompleted or discipling a child or a decision at work or a verse in the Scripture \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthat meant a lot to you.\u00a0 We would write those down and then come together \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand share those and, very importantly, explain why those memorial stones were \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmeaningful to our heart.\u00a0 And it's just a very simple way of engaging and having \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tkind of a heart-to-heart conversation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to take both of you back to the very first, again, because I think most \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tof our listeners are probably thinking, \"This is a foreign concept.\u00a0 We've never \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdone anything like this.\"\u00a0 Don't you think that's true?\u00a0 Most couples don't take the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ttime and do stuff like this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right, I agree.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And when they stop and think about doing it, the first thing that comes to \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmind for many of them are all of the obstacles to doing it.\u00a0 You've got to get \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbabysitting for the kids.\u00a0 I mean, when you started you had children at home, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tright?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That's just not something that you pack a bag and leave.\u00a0 You've got a lot\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tof work just to get away, don't you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, absolutely, and it's hard.\u00a0 In fact, sometimes we would leave town, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand we would look at each other and say, \"Is this worth it?\u00a0 It's just so hard, is \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthis worth it?\"\u00a0 And, yes, absolutely it is.\u00a0 And we would get a young couple from \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthe church or some other family that would help us with the children at that time \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand, yes, it's hard work, but it's well worth it.\u00a0 It's a great investment in your \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tfamily.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But was it Bill who came to you first and said, \"I think we need a weekend \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\taway where we could just clear our schedules and get some time together?\"\u00a0 Or \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twas it your idea?\u00a0 Who dreamed it up and \u2013 do you remember?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you remember?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don't remember.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don't either.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 We'll just have to both take credit for that one, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that when you asked the question a minute ago, was this \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tsomething you pre-planned or was it something that you went out of town with \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyour tongues wagging out.\u00a0 I think that we were probably burned out at that time \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand said, \"We've got to get a handle on life here.\u00a0 We're losing ground, and we've \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tgot some issues to talk about, and we need to get out of town for a couple of \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdays and talk about that.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, I would have to say that would describe Barbara and me among \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthose first times we got away \u2013 it was survival.\u00a0 We had some of our worst \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\targuments on the drive to get away, because we were tired, we were arriving too \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tlate on a Friday night.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, that's one of the things we did.\u00a0 We decided we would lengthen it and \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\thave three nights away because by the time you've had the second night away,\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyou're actually starting to think again with a clear head.\u00a0 But for us it was a matter \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tof not merely surviving the schedule but getting back in charge of the schedule \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand the pace of life and our values and on one another's team and not getting \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdown on one another.\u00a0 The thing I like about the idea of sharing how God's been\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tgood to you in recent months is that gets couples off of the negative and on the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tpositive. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know there are probably couples listening right now that say, \"Why, we couldn't think of anything.\u00a0 I don't think God's been very good to us.\"\u00a0 Well, part of that is the pace of life.\u00a0 If you got away and had a chance to think about it for an hour, I think you might be surprised at where God has shown up in your marriage and your family, and how He's benefiting you.\u00a0 But what happens is we get so focused on the negative and usually it's in your spouse and how they disappointed you and what these weekends have done for you guys as you got away was lift your eyes back up toward God and helped you appreciate one another in some fresh ways.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 That's right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, my mind sort of went back a little bit to those early days, and I \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twas a young pastor in a growing church.\u00a0 We had very young children, and our \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tschedules were getting busier, and there were lots of things that I had never \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdone before and was learning on a very fast learning curve.\u00a0 At times it was really \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdifficult.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that really is one of the discoveries, Dennis, you brought up just about the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ttreadmill.\u00a0 We all live on a treadmill, and it is going so fast, and one of the things I \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\thope the whole idea of <em>Getting Away to Get It Together<\/em> (which is not really \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\toriginal to us, it's really original to Jesus Christ \u2013 He got away to get His life \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ttogether on numerous occasions); but one of the things that you said a minute \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tago is that it begins to move a marriage from the reactive approach to that \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ttreadmill to a proactive approach.\u00a0 And, as you said, you cannot imagine just the \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tsimple discussions and ideas that you will have that will put your marriage back \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ton track.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did your first weekends away, as you started making this a practice in your \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmarriage, but back to those first ones \u2013 did you have an agenda in mind other \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthan let's just relax, have some romance, you know, reconnect as a couple?\u00a0 I \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tcan see couples saying, \"Let's take a couple of days and get away, and we'll just \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\trelax,\" or did you have \u2013 \"We've got some things we need to accomplish, and I \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twant to make sure we get through this before we get home.\"\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think it was a combination of both aspects of what you just said.\u00a0 There\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twere some things that we wanted to do.\u00a0 We wanted to address our schedule.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe wanted to talk about our children.\u00a0 But it wasn't like the annual business \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tretreat.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You didn't pass out an agenda to your wife?<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, and, of course, again, going back to those early days, from a work ethic \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tstandpoint, the idea of me taking off time in the middle of the week to go spend \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tparts of three days or so with my wife \u2013 I had to kind of overcome the inertia of, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\"Well, gosh, whoever does that?\" for openers.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut as we first started doing it, we did fun things on the evening.\u00a0 Like Carolyn \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tsaid, we didn't start real heavy.\u00a0 We'd go have a nice dinner, and a lot of times \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twe would ask fun questions, like, \"If you could go anywhere in the world, your \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdream vacation, with any other couple and spend a few days, where would you \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tgo, who would go with you and why?\"\u00a0 \"What if you had $10 million?\u00a0 What would \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyou do?\"\u00a0 Just fun questions where you were just interacting at a very easy level \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tover dinner, having fun, and just kind of getting into each other's brains and\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdreams about how you'd answer those.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I happen to know that you are about to go off on one of these weekends \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twith your wife in the next couple of days, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Actually, with Bill and Carolyn.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, are you guys going, too?\u00a0 I didn't know that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We're doing the very thing he talked about, and both couples have \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ttalked about getting away to go to another city and \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you have an agenda for this time, or is it just going to be relax and \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\thave fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It's all about relationship \u2013 that's the agenda.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Carolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, Barbara and I have been friends since before we were \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmarried, and we've been sisters, we call each other, for many years, and Bill and \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI are celebrating 35 years of marriage with this trip with Dennis and Barbara, and \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twe are really excited to get to spend some time and have some meaningful \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tconversations.\u00a0 We'll talk about memorial stones.\u00a0 I'm sure we'll talk about \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tdreams and plans for the future, and issues that we're all facing, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Have you gone through the book in advance of this weekend?\u00a0 I just want \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tto make sure you're up to speed on what you need to accomplish.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the book is right here, Bob.\u00a0 The weekend is right here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So what do you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I'm hoping that you've taken some notes, and you're getting ready to get \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\taway to get it together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 I haven't taken any notes yet.\u00a0 The notes will be taken \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tduring the weekend.\u00a0 But, you know, I've found that Barbara, as a woman, has a \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tgreat need for focus, and we, as men, have a great need to get off that treadmill \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthat Bill was talking about and give our wives some relational focus.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd this weekend package, this book, <em>Getting Away to Get It Together<\/em>, lays it \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tout.\u00a0 You don't have to be an expert in it, because Bill and Carolyn have laid it \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tout.\u00a0 He has the checklist.\u00a0 Bill is very thorough, and I promise you, the checklist \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tabout what you need to take with you and what needs to be anticipated and how \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyou need to approach it, you can make this as structured or as unstructured as \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tyou want to make it.\u00a0 It needs to fit the needs of your marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, one of the little areas I like about this is if you need time to relax, then here are some things to do.\u00a0 If you need to really talk about some issues, then here is the place in the book to go to and do these projects. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you customize it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it's like a smorgasbord.\u00a0 And, frankly, there is more than one \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tweekend in here.\u00a0 I mean, this is \u2013 wouldn't you say, Bill, probably a half a dozen \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tweekends right here?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 Easily, and the good thing about it is you can repeat a lot of the concepts.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tReally, if you think about the projects or the concepts in the book, they are really \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tjust channels of communication.\u00a0 They are just providing a little bit of structure to \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tinvite a couple to be able to talk about some meaningful things in their \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\trelationship.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember when we were first married, and Carolyn and I would sit down to have a meaningful talk or even on those early retreats, Bob, there would be a lot of times where I would go, \"Well, what am I going to talk about?\u00a0 I've got to come up with something.\"\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, in part, it's just \u2013 for the husband, to me, it gives you a tool to have some\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tleadership resources to get things started.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you mentioned the memorial stones as one of the things that you and \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCarolyn have talked about.\u00a0 It's not like, as a couple, you go, \"Okay, we've had \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tthat talk.\u00a0 Now we never need to discuss those things again for the rest of our \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tlives.\"\u00a0 You can revisit that subject every time you go out or every third weekend \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tor every fifth \u2013 whenever it's appropriate for your marriage, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bill:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly, and another one that comes to mind is one we call \"Child Talk,\" \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\twhere basically you're just evaluating where your children are.\u00a0 And it's a real \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tsimple project to do, but because \u2013 same issue \u2013 your children are growing older \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tand so forth.\u00a0 They have different needs and there are different things you want \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tto zero in and focus on as a couple, and so it's very helpful in doing that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, you know we've got a lot of listeners who are thinking, \"Okay, first of\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tall, trying to find a weekend is tough.\u00a0 Secondly, the expense of getting \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tbabysitting, getting away, going someplace\" \u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Farm the kids out and stay home \u2013 although I would say this about that \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2013 if you stay home, the tendency is to look around at the wallpaper that's peeling \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tin the bathroom, at the stuff in the yard or in the garage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don't think staying home would work for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it wouldn't for Barbara.\u00a0 I think I could much better than \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ther, but you get distracted by the things that distract you daily \u2013 television, newspaper, the Internet, I mean, on and on it goes, and what you need to do is turn your cell phone off, don't take your computer with you unless you agree you're not going to go online.\u00a0 And if you go someplace, one of the best places we went to didn't have TV.\u00a0 It was a fully modern little cabin stuck away in Northern Arkansas.\u00a0 It was a first-class place, but it didn't have any television to distract you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And Barbara was probably really glad about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She was, she was.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think the point is, couples have got to make this a preventive \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tmaintenance priority for your marriage.\u00a0 You're really investing in the future \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\thealth of your marriage, and a weekend like this away \u2013 you may look at it and \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tgo, \"We just don't have the time,\" or \"We don't have the money,\" or \"We don't \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\thave the resources.\"\u00a0 You need to find some creative ways to make that happen \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tin order for your marriage to have that preventive booster shot that gets it
