right?\u00a0 Here\u2019s Barbara Rainey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Moms are busy, and I know moms are busy because I remember how crazy it was for me at Christmas to try to pull off anything that was meaningful.\u00a0 I had a zillion things going on all the time; and as much as I wanted to do things that were meaningful, it was always a challenge to get it into the schedule, to get everybody together, and to plow through and do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, November 28<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife\u00ae, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Barbara Rainey joins us today with some strategies for how to make this a truly Christ-centered Christmas.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us on the Monday edition.\u00a0 Thanksgiving officially in the books\u2014your wife\u2019s favorite holiday is done for the year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\u00a0 I want to ask you.\u00a0 What did you do this past weekend after you celebrated turkey day?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the holiday weekend\u2014you know\u2014what people do.\u00a0 Maybe a little shopping, a little football, kind of kick back, relax, take it easy.\u00a0 What did you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me tell you the ritual at our house.\u00a0 We kind of close the door on Thanksgiving; and on Sunday afternoon, I get this look from Barbara that I immediately\u2014now, because we\u2019ve been married for almost four decades\u2014you kind of get it by this point; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know it\u2019s coming.\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, you do.\u00a0 And\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And by the way, we should acknowledge that the woman who gave you the look is in the studio with us here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I\u2019m giving another one because I\u2019m not sure where you\u2019re going.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes you do.\u00a0 She kind of points to a little cottage that\u2014well, first of all, we don\u2019t have a garage; alright?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The garage got taken over when we raised six kids to have a playroom with a ping pong table\u2014that all got enclosed.\u00a0 We had to put our junk somewhere, you know.\u00a0 So there\u2019s a little cottage out there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A little cottage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s really a storage facility.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is a storage unit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 But I refuse to call it a storage unit because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s a storage unit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want it to be cute, so we call it \u201cthe cottage\u201d.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 When Christmas is upon us, she points to the storage unit; and I begin a trek that had to be very similar to the children of Israel in the wilderness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What? The wise men experience?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Going back and forth, back and forth, back and forth; and I carry boxes in\u2014<em>boxes<\/em>, because Barbara does love Thanksgiving.\u00a0 That\u2019s her favorite, but Christmas wins for the most number of boxes.\u00a0 She\u2019s got figurines, ornaments.\u00a0 I mean, we\u2019ve got ornaments, Bob.\u00a0 I\u2019m convinced we could decorate the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, now, now, now, now, now.\u00a0 You are <em>stretching<\/em> the truth, significantly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But it really is a favorite holiday of hers because it does represent our Savior\u2019s birth.\u00a0 She loves the traditions that surround Christmas because we\u2019ve made so many in our four decades together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The house does get a little bit of a makeover right before the holiday; doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 It does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And has it continued to get a makeover even though the kids are out of the nest?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes it does, but things have changed a bit as to what I do and what I don\u2019t do.\u00a0 We are not currently doing a full-sized Christmas tree.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Changed a bit?\u00a0 I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay. So?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s the reality.\u00a0 We no longer have a giant tree; alright?\u00a0 Which usually\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She called it a full-sized tree.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Full-sized tree, which caused great\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Our ceilings are only eight feet tall.\u00a0 We could never have a giant tree.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s true.\u00a0 That\u2019s true, but it always felt \u201cgiant\u201d to me.\u00a0 Instead of hauling in 150 boxes, we only have to haul in 50 now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, my gosh; I can\u2019t believe the numbers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was not a room in our house that didn\u2019t have something that called to mind the reason for the season.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, does this go all the way back to the first Christmas you were married?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Have you always been kind of a \u201clet\u2019s decorate, let\u2019s get the house ready for Christmas\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cNo,\u201d to the first question.\u00a0 It hasn\u2019t gone all the way back.\u00a0 Yes, I have always been a \u201clet\u2019s decorate the house and get ready for Christmas.\u201d\u00a0 It grew with the children, though, because when the kids were around they\u2014kids just soak it in to putting stuff up for Christmas.\u00a0 They talk about it constantly; they can\u2019t wait for it to arrive.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember one year, I think we put up three trees.\u00a0 We only had the one that we bought for the living room; but the kids went out in the woods and cut down a couple of cedar trees.\u00a0 They had one upstairs, and they had one in the playroom.\u00a0 They made their own stuff.\u00a0 It kind of changed shape throughout the years, depending on how many were at home and what their\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The shape got bigger, and bigger, and bigger.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 But now it\u2019s contracting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is contracting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 There you go.\u00a0 Thank you very much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s fascinating.\u00a0 It really is fascinating.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Over time, Barbara, you would hear other moms talk about things they were doing with their kids, and you really had an agenda for what is about a four-week period most years, between the end of Thanksgiving and Christmas.\u00a0 That agenda was to capture the kids\u2019 imagination and point them in a spiritual direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 I did not want Christmas in our house to be all about four weeks of, \u201cWhat I\u2019m going to get,\u201d and, \u201cWhat I get to open,\u201d and, \u201cWhat\u2019s in it for me?\u201d-kind of mentality.\u00a0 We worked really hard to focus on the real reason for Christmas and to talk about that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI also focused really hard, Dennis and I both did with our kids, on helping them think about what they could give, and what they could do for others, and make what they might be getting secondary or even less, if I could possibly do it.\u00a0 We focused\u2014we just really worked hard to keep the focus on the right emphasis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What Barbara\u2019s talking about\u2014being focused on what you\u2019re giving another person\u2014was even implemented on Christmas morning when we exchanged presents.\u00a0 Instead of going and picking the present that\u2019s addressed to you, instead you\u2019d go pick a present that you\u2019ve given\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes\u2014that you\u2019d gotten for somebody else.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and hand-deliver it; and then that person opened that present, and they went to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then it was their turn to go <em>give<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 And so it was focused on<em> not<\/em> \u201cWhat am I receiving?\u201d but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWhat am I giving?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWhat am I giving?\u201d\u00a0 Again, it\u2019s back to the spiritual significance that Christ came and dwelt among us\u2014and that really is God\u2019s greatest gift to us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, but you\u2019re competing with a culture that is screaming at you and at your children that, \u201cIt\u2019s all about gifts and get\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it\u2019s all about fun and there\u2019s not a lot about Jesus.\u00a0 So what were some of the things that you did to try to tune down the noise of the culture and turn up the spiritual emphasis of the holiday?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, two other things, in addition to the whole gift-giving thing where we\u2019d tried to train our kids to think about what they were giving instead of what they were getting, and those two things were \u2013one is, I really worked at playing hymns about Christmas, songs that talk about Christ and talk about Him coming to earth.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t play very many <em>Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer<\/em>, <em>Frosty the Snowman<\/em> secular kinds of songs around the Christmas holiday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then the other thing we did is we tried to make a really big deal of putting up the Nativity scene every year.\u00a0 The Nativity scene that we used for many, many years is one that Dennis brought home from Israel.\u00a0 He went to Israel when he was\u2014what?\u2014 21, something like that.\u00a0 We weren\u2019t married.\u00a0 He brought home for himself a souvenir which was an olive-wood Nativity scene.\u00a0 That was the one we used for probably the first 20 years of our marriage with our kids.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe always made a big deal of putting out the Nativity scene.\u00a0 I wanted that to be the focal point for our kids, more important than decorating the tree, even though that was still a fun part of the season\u2014but focusing on putting that out, talking about who the characters were.\u00a0 We always put it in a prominent place so that it was kind of the center.\u00a0 Even though the tree was larger, the Nativity was in a more important place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you keep Jesus out of the scene until Christmas morning?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sometimes we did that because I thought that was a <em>great<\/em> idea, but we\u2019d forget to put Him in on Christmas morning.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Talk about the ultimate\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 The ultimate insult.\u00a0 Yes, it just didn\u2019t always work because the kids would get up, and they\u2019d be excited about Christmas morning, and we\u2019d forget to go get Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One thing we did do, though, on Christmas Eve\u2014that evening, of course, we\u2019d have the special meal that the girls and I prepared.\u00a0 I mean, we took over the kitchen, shooed Barbara out.\u00a0 It started out to kind of be a one-man show with a little group of toddlers hanging around; but as the girls became young ladies, they really helped with that Christmas Eve dinner.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe turned it into a feast; and at the end of the feast, we\u2019d read about the coming of Christ and His birth in Bethlehem.\u00a0 I always thought that was really important, to open the Bible and begin to read the story about the Savior and who began to seek him out\u2014the wise men, the shepherds\u2014and talk about that as a family.\u00a0 Again, children are young.\u00a0 They have to have symbols to be able to capture this, but I think reading the story is very important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A few years back FamilyLife put together a resource designed for families.\u00a0 You were talking about a Nativity scene.\u00a0 We came up with an interactive Nativity scene for families, with young children in mind.\u00a0 Each of the pieces in the Nativity scene was in an individual box.\u00a0 Box number one had the angel, and box number two had Mary, and then Joseph.\u00a0 The kids would open the boxes and take out the figures and put them in the Nativity scene as Mom or Dad read the Christmas story from a booklet that we\u2019d put together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the last few months, you\u2019ve been involved in a project here, Barbara, to give that resource a little bit of a makeover.\u00a0 What was the objective behind a new version of <em>What God Wants for Christmas\u00ae<\/em>?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, a couple of things.\u00a0 One is that it\u2019s such a great resource because we just had a Nativity scene, and we didn\u2019t really have anything other than opening the Bible and reading Luke 2.\u00a0 What this resource does is\u2014it is designed so that it can be done over seven days, or you could do it all in one day if you wanted to.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut there\u2019s a portion of a poem to read for each character, and it talks about who that character is, what that character\u2019s place was in the grand scheme of things, and it tells the story of the Nativity in a creative way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe other element that\u2019s in the new updated version, that I\u2019m really excited about, is an audio CD that has the poem; and it\u2019s sort of acted out\u2014I guess that would be the best way to say it\u2014with different voices playing the different parts of the characters in the Nativity.\u00a0 So you can do this as a family, but then the kids can listen to the story over and over again on their own.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause moms are busy, and I know moms are busy because I remember how crazy it was for me at Christmas to try to pull off anything that was meaningful.\u00a0 I had a zillion things going on all the time; and as much as I wanted to do things that were meaningful, it was always a challenge to get it into the schedule, to get everybody together, and to plow through and do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I\u2019m excited about the CD because if all else fails and you can\u2019t sit down and read the book, your kids can listen to it.\u00a0 They can hear the story of the Nativity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are seven boxes in the Nativity set, but there are only six figurines.\u00a0 Box number seven is\u2014there\u2019s a little bit of a mystery attached to that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s a little bit of a surprise in the last one.\u00a0 That\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And in fact, in box seven, you get a chance to see what God wants for Christmas.\u00a0 The kids really\u2014there\u2019s some anticipation that\u2019s built early on.\u00a0 They get excited.\u00a0 They can\u2019t wait to open box seven and see what\u2019s in there because they know it\u2019s something special.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if we want to give it away\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t think we want to give it away.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t think we want to give away\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014what\u2019s in box number seven.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think they need to find it.\u00a0 You know, one of the things that I like is a page that\u2019s black and white.\u00a0 Well, let me just read it for you:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cTwas the week before Christmas, but nobody knew.\u00a0 No stockings, no ornaments, no gifts or good news.\u00a0 All the world had lost hope; all the people felt fear.\u00a0 Now listen, I\u2019ll tell you why Christmas came near.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen Barbara came up with this, it was a pretty profound experience.\u00a0 I felt like I lost my wife to writing this book of poetry about Christmas for the better part of three or four months.\u00a0 But there was a time when this phrase that I just read came to you, and it was really a pretty cool experience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Most of the poem had been written, and I just had words float through my head for weeks on end.\u00a0 But most of it had been finished and one night, or one early morning\u2014I can\u2019t remember now which it was\u2014between either going to sleep or waking up in the morning \u2013it was one of those moments, and those words just popped into my head.\u00a0 I rolled over and grabbed a piece of paper and a pencil and wrote them down because I thought, \u201cThat\u2019s it.\u00a0 That\u2019s the way to get into this.\u00a0 That\u2019s the way to introduce\u2014\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause really and truly, that\u2019s the way it was.\u00a0 The Bible stopped 400 years before Christ was born.\u00a0 There were no more words written, no more words spoken that were recorded in the Scripture for the people, and the people really did feel hopeless.\u00a0 The Romans were ruling in that time and people were afraid.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t know what the future held.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd into that darkness of their lives and into the darkest time in the calendar, God chose to send His Son.\u00a0 It was an exciting moment to get those words because I really believe God gave those words as an introduction to why He sent Jesus to us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Barbara, if you were going to use this resource with your kids today, if your kids were still at home\u2014and for a while, you had kids from the ages of two to 12.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was a ten-year gap, six kids.\u00a0 How would you use it if you had toddlers and teenagers running around the same house together?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would have my older kids read the story.\u00a0 It\u2019s one of the things we\u2019ve done at Thanksgiving.\u00a0 Now that we\u2019ve got grandkids, who are old enough to read, we engage them and allow them to be the ones to read the Thanksgiving story.\u00a0 I would probably have my older kids read the story, and I would probably be refereeing the younger ones as they anxiously wanted to open the boxes.\u00a0 I would have them have to wait until it was the right time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI do think this is a resource that is something that a family with wide age ranges of kids can use because it\u2019s designed for younger kids to understand; but the words and the poem are intriguing enough that teenagers will be fascinated to listen to it because it\u2019s not a little kid\u2019s story.\u00a0 It\u2019s a grown-up story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want to kind of take some of the pressure off of moms and dads or grandparents who may be listening and thinking about implementing this into their Christmas tradition.\u00a0 Reduce your expectations, especially if the children are under the age of five or six.\u00a0 I just remember that some of these traditions that we did were absolute chaos.\u00a0 I mean, it was not this\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was not Norman Rockwell.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 They weren\u2019t all these children sitting with their hands in their laps, smiling wonderfully as you read the story and as you pull the figurines out.\u00a0 I mean, they may be throwing the figurines at each other, or arguing, or fighting over who gets to open the box.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Probably arguing and fighting over whose turn it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 No doubt about it.\u00a0 I would just say, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t have to be perfect.\u00a0 To execute this, you just need to do it.\u00a0 You just need to keep pressing into it; and when there\u2019s spilled hot chocolate, or tea, or whatever you have as you read this, don\u2019t worry about it.\u00a0 Just keep a sense of humor and keep moving.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it\u2019s nice that the figurines aren\u2019t olive wood or porcelain.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me just comment about my olive wood keepsake that I bought in 1971 when I went to Israel.\u00a0 By the time we finished with our kids, the shepherds\u2019 staffs were gone.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Gone.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Half of them were there in some, and the chains that were wrapped around the camel\u2019s bridle\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Had been snapped off?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, my goodness.\u00a0 Those were olive wood chains.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 And several of the camels only had three legs, instead of four.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But the good thing is, \u201cJesus survived.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He made it through.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We didn\u2019t lose Him in the process.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He really was the center of it all.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 The big, expensive Nativity scenes\u2014that is not what this is all about.\u00a0 It\u2019s about memories; it\u2019s about story-telling; it\u2019s about reliving; it\u2019s about experiencing Christmas.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s great to have a figure that a four-year-old can pick up and you\u2019re not worried about, \u201cIs that going to break?\u00a0 Is it going to drop?\u201d\u00a0 Dennis talked about this moment not being crowded out of Christmas.\u00a0 I want to ask you about the white-bearded man who shows up every year at Christmas.\u00a0 I just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You just have to get into something controversial.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I just need to alert the parents who are listening.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to have a candid conversation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re talking about Uncle Ralph?\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re going to have candid questions about Santa Claus.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t want your children to hear our candid conversation about Santa Claus, you may want to switch stations or busy them with something else because I\u2019m just going to ask you, \u201cWhere did Santa fit in at your house and were your kids aware of him?\u00a0 What did they believe about him?\u00a0 How did you handle that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 We allowed our kids to believe in Santa Claus, but we didn\u2019t make a big deal out of it.\u00a0 When they figured it out, we went, \u201cYep, you\u2019re right.\u00a0 It\u2019s no big deal.\u201d\u00a0 We did have stockings; and we put stuff in the stockings, too.\u00a0 But it wasn\u2019t a big ritual tradition to read \u201cThe Night Before Christmas\u201d, which is the Santa story.\u00a0 It\u2019s a great poem; it\u2019s a classic poem.\u00a0 I think we had it as a book; and I think our kids knew pieces of it, but that wasn\u2019t the centerpiece of Christmas for us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did they write letters to Santa?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that, \u201cNo, they didn\u2019t write letters to Santa,\u201d because, again, I was emphasizing what they gave to their siblings and friends and not what they were going to get.\u00a0 They never made a list for Santa.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you take them to the mall, and did they get their picture on Santa\u2019s lap?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think we did a couple of times, but we didn\u2019t go to the mall for the purpose of them getting a picture.\u00a0 The picture that I remember, that\u2019s so funny, is when we had four.\u00a0 Rebecca was a baby, and I went to the photo shop to pick up a roll of film because nothing was digital.\u00a0 I walked in, and the photo shop had a Santa.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo my kids said, \u201cOh, can we go see Santa?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cSure.\u00a0 Why not?\u00a0 Go on.\u201d\u00a0 So we went up there, and they all climbed in his lap; and I had my camera, or else they were taking photos.\u00a0 I can\u2019t remember.\u00a0 I put Rebecca up in his lap, and she just howled.\u00a0 She screamed.\u00a0 She was terrified.\u00a0 I have this little Polaroid-sized snapshot of my four kids, and she\u2019s just screaming her lungs out.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut no, we didn\u2019t make special trips to the mall so they could sit in Santa\u2019s lap.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was there, but he wasn\u2019t the center.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I didn\u2019t want to make a big deal of him by trying to <em>totally <\/em>dismiss him because it\u2019s so much a part of the culture, and kids talk about it at school.\u00a0 Sometimes when you over-emphasize it by trying to get rid of it, it almost makes it worse.\u00a0 We just kind of ignored it and minimized it; and yes, it was there.\u00a0 Our kids did write notes for Santa when they left cookies and milk for us to eat, but even that didn\u2019t last for very long.\u00a0 They figured it out pretty quickly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How are your kids handling this with the grandchildren?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what all of them are doing, quite honestly, but I think the older ones\u2014I know the oldest one is pretty much doing what we did\u2014not making a big deal out of it\u2014but they have stockings and the kids get presents on Christmas morning that supposedly just showed up overnight; but they\u2019re not making a big deal out of it, either.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are going to send all of the kids a set of <em>What God Wants for Christmas;<\/em> right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 I sure will.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then you\u2019ll call and say, \u201cHave you used it yet?\u00a0 Have you used it yet?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 I might, but I don\u2019t want to pressure them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And the reality is, we designed this resource for our kids, for our grandkids, but also for our listeners, and for their kids, and their grandkids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think even those of our listeners\u2014and some of them have already got the <em>What God Wants for Christmas<\/em> Nativity scene\u2014but they don\u2019t have the book that goes with it.\u00a0 Actually, we have redesigned the Nativity scene; You have probably already spent a little bit of time thinking about this Christmas season and about how you want to keep Christ at the center of the season in your family.\u00a0 That\u2019s easier said than done; right?\u00a0 Here\u2019s Barbara Rainey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Moms are busy, and I know moms are busy because I remember how crazy it was for me at Christmas to try to pull off anything that was meaningful.\u00a0 I had a zillion things going on all the time; and as much as I wanted to do things that were meaningful, it was always a challenge to get it into the schedule, to get everybody together, and to plow through and do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, November 28<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife\u00ae, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Barbara Rainey joins us today with some strategies for how to make this a truly Christ-centered Christmas.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us on the Monday edition.\u00a0 Thanksgiving officially in the books\u2014your wife\u2019s favorite holiday is done for the year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\u00a0 I want to ask you.\u00a0 What did you do this past weekend after you celebrated turkey day?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the holiday weekend\u2014you know\u2014what people do.\u00a0 Maybe a little shopping, a little football, kind of kick back, relax, take it easy.\u00a0 What did you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me tell you the ritual at our house.\u00a0 We kind of close the door on Thanksgiving; and on Sunday afternoon, I get this look from Barbara that I immediately\u2014now, because we\u2019ve been married for almost four decades\u2014you kind of get it by this point; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know it\u2019s coming.\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, you do.\u00a0 And\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And by the way, we should acknowledge that the woman who gave you the look is in the studio with us here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I\u2019m giving another one because I\u2019m not sure where you\u2019re going.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes you do.\u00a0 She kind of points to a little cottage that\u2014well, first of all, we don\u2019t have a garage; alright?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The garage got taken over when we raised six kids to have a playroom with a ping pong table\u2014that all got enclosed.\u00a0 We had to put our junk somewhere, you know.\u00a0 So there\u2019s a little cottage out there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A little cottage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s really a storage facility.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is a storage unit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 But I refuse to call it a storage unit because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s a storage unit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want it to be cute, so we call it \u201cthe cottage\u201d.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 When Christmas is upon us, she points to the storage unit; and I begin a trek that had to be very similar to the children of Israel in the wilderness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What? The wise men experience?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Going back and forth, back and forth, back and forth; and I carry boxes in\u2014<em>boxes<\/em>, because Barbara does love Thanksgiving.\u00a0 That\u2019s her favorite, but Christmas wins for the most number of boxes.\u00a0 She\u2019s got figurines, ornaments.\u00a0 I mean, we\u2019ve got ornaments, Bob.\u00a0 I\u2019m convinced we could decorate the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Center.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, now, now, now, now, now.\u00a0 You are <em>stretching<\/em> the truth, significantly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But it really is a favorite holiday of hers because it does represent our Savior\u2019s birth.\u00a0 She loves the traditions that surround Christmas because we\u2019ve made so many in our four decades together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The house does get a little bit of a makeover right before the holiday; doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 It does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And has it continued to get a makeover even though the kids are out of the nest?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes it does, but things have changed a bit as to what I do and what I don\u2019t do.\u00a0 We are not currently doing a full-sized Christmas tree.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Changed a bit?\u00a0 I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay. So?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s the reality.\u00a0 We no longer have a giant tree; alright?\u00a0 Which usually\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She called it a full-sized tree.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Full-sized tree, which caused great\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Our ceilings are only eight feet tall.\u00a0 We could never have a giant tree.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s true.\u00a0 That\u2019s true, but it always felt \u201cgiant\u201d to me.\u00a0 Instead of hauling in 150 boxes, we only have to haul in 50 now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, my gosh; I can\u2019t believe the numbers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was not a room in our house that didn\u2019t have something that called to mind the reason for the season.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, does this go all the way back to the first Christmas you were married?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Have you always been kind of a \u201clet\u2019s decorate, let\u2019s get the house ready for Christmas\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cNo,\u201d to the first question.\u00a0 It hasn\u2019t gone all the way back.\u00a0 Yes, I have always been a \u201clet\u2019s decorate the house and get ready for Christmas.\u201d\u00a0 It grew with the children, though, because when the kids were around they\u2014kids just soak it in to putting stuff up for Christmas.\u00a0 They talk about it constantly; they can\u2019t wait for it to arrive.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember one year, I think we put up three trees.\u00a0 We only had the one that we bought for the living room; but the kids went out in the woods and cut down a couple of cedar trees.\u00a0 They had one upstairs, and they had one in the playroom.\u00a0 They made their own stuff.\u00a0 It kind of changed shape throughout the years, depending on how many were at home and what their\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The shape got bigger, and bigger, and bigger.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 But now it\u2019s contracting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is contracting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 There you go.\u00a0 Thank you very much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s fascinating.\u00a0 It really is fascinating.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Over time, Barbara, you would hear other moms talk about things they were doing with their kids, and you really had an agenda for what is about a four-week period most years, between the end of Thanksgiving and Christmas.\u00a0 That agenda was to capture the kids\u2019 imagination and point them in a spiritual direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 I did not want Christmas in our house to be all about four weeks of, \u201cWhat I\u2019m going to get,\u201d and, \u201cWhat I get to open,\u201d and, \u201cWhat\u2019s in it for me?\u201d-kind of mentality.\u00a0 We worked really hard to focus on the real reason for Christmas and to talk about that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI also focused really hard, Dennis and I both did with our kids, on helping them think about what they could give, and what they could do for others, and make what they might be getting secondary or even less, if I could possibly do it.\u00a0 We focused\u2014we just really worked hard to keep the focus on the right emphasis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What Barbara\u2019s talking about\u2014being focused on what you\u2019re giving another person\u2014was even implemented on Christmas morning when we exchanged presents.\u00a0 Instead of going and picking the present that\u2019s addressed to you, instead you\u2019d go pick a present that you\u2019ve given\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes\u2014that you\u2019d gotten for somebody else.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and hand-deliver it; and then that person opened that present, and they went to\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then it was their turn to go <em>give<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 And so it was focused on<em> not<\/em> \u201cWhat am I receiving?\u201d but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWhat am I giving?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWhat am I giving?\u201d\u00a0 Again, it\u2019s back to the spiritual significance that Christ came and dwelt among us\u2014and that really is God\u2019s greatest gift to us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, but you\u2019re competing with a culture that is screaming at you and at your children that, \u201cIt\u2019s all about gifts and get\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it\u2019s all about fun and there\u2019s not a lot about Jesus.\u00a0 So what were some of the things that you did to try to tune down the noise of the culture and turn up the spiritual emphasis of the holiday?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, two other things, in addition to the whole gift-giving thing where we\u2019d tried to train our kids to think about what they were giving instead of what they were getting, and those two things were \u2013one is, I really worked at playing hymns about Christmas, songs that talk about Christ and talk about Him coming to earth.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t play very many <em>Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer<\/em>, <em>Frosty the Snowman<\/em> secular kinds of songs around the Christmas holiday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then the other thing we did is we tried to make a really big deal of putting up the Nativity scene every year.\u00a0 The Nativity scene that we used for many, many years is one that Dennis brought home from Israel.\u00a0 He went to Israel when he was\u2014what?\u2014 21, something like that.\u00a0 We weren\u2019t married.\u00a0 He brought home for himself a souvenir which was an olive-wood Nativity scene.\u00a0 That was the one we used for probably the first 20 years of our marriage with our kids.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe always made a big deal of putting out the Nativity scene.\u00a0 I wanted that to be the focal point for our kids, more important than decorating the tree, even though that was still a fun part of the season\u2014but focusing on putting that out, talking about who the characters were.\u00a0 We always put it in a prominent place so that it was kind of the center.\u00a0 Even though the tree was larger, the Nativity was in a more important place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you keep Jesus out of the scene until Christmas morning?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sometimes we did that because I thought that was a <em>great<\/em> idea, but we\u2019d forget to put Him in on Christmas morning.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Talk about the ultimate\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 The ultimate insult.\u00a0 Yes, it just didn\u2019t always work because the kids would get up, and they\u2019d be excited about Christmas morning, and we\u2019d forget to go get Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One thing we did do, though, on Christmas Eve\u2014that evening, of course, we\u2019d have the special meal that the girls and I prepared.\u00a0 I mean, we took over the kitchen, shooed Barbara out.\u00a0 It started out to kind of be a one-man show with a little group of toddlers hanging around; but as the girls became young ladies, they really helped with that Christmas Eve dinner.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe turned it into a feast; and at the end of the feast, we\u2019d read about the coming of Christ and His birth in Bethlehem.\u00a0 I always thought that was really important, to open the Bible and begin to read the story about the Savior and who began to seek him out\u2014the wise men, the shepherds\u2014and talk about that as a family.\u00a0 Again, children are young.\u00a0 They have to have symbols to be able to capture this, but I think reading the story is very important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A few years back FamilyLife put together a resource designed for families.\u00a0 You were talking about a Nativity scene.\u00a0 We came up with an interactive Nativity scene for families, with young children in mind.\u00a0 Each of the pieces in the Nativity scene was in an individual box.\u00a0 Box number one had the angel, and box number two had Mary, and then Joseph.\u00a0 The kids would open the boxes and take out the figures and put them in the Nativity scene as Mom or Dad read the Christmas story from a booklet that we\u2019d put together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the last few months, you\u2019ve been involved in a project here, Barbara, to give that resource a little bit of a makeover.\u00a0 What was the objective behind a new version of <em>What God Wants for Christmas\u00ae<\/em>?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, a couple of things.\u00a0 One is that it\u2019s such a great resource because we just had a Nativity scene, and we didn\u2019t really have anything other than opening the Bible and reading Luke 2.\u00a0 What this resource does is\u2014it is designed so that it can be done over seven days, or you could do it all in one day if you wanted to.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut there\u2019s a portion of a poem to read for each character, and it talks about who that character is, what that character\u2019s place was in the grand scheme of things, and it tells the story of the Nativity in a creative way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe other element that\u2019s in the new updated version, that I\u2019m really excited about, is an audio CD that has the poem; and it\u2019s sort of acted out\u2014I guess that would be the best way to say it\u2014with different voices playing the different parts of the characters in the Nativity.\u00a0 So you can do this as a family, but then the kids can listen to the story over and over again on their own.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause moms are busy, and I know moms are busy because I remember how crazy it was for me at Christmas to try to pull off anything that was meaningful.\u00a0 I had a zillion things going on all the time; and as much as I wanted to do things that were meaningful, it was always a challenge to get it into the schedule, to get everybody together, and to plow through and do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I\u2019m excited about the CD because if all else fails and you can\u2019t sit down and read the book, your kids can listen to it.\u00a0 They can hear the story of the Nativity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are seven boxes in the Nativity set, but there are only six figurines.\u00a0 Box number seven is\u2014there\u2019s a little bit of a mystery attached to that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s a little bit of a surprise in the last one.\u00a0 That\u2019s correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And in fact, in box seven, you get a chance to see what God wants for Christmas.\u00a0 The kids really\u2014there\u2019s some anticipation that\u2019s built early on.\u00a0 They get excited.\u00a0 They can\u2019t wait to open box seven and see what\u2019s in there because they know it\u2019s something special.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if we want to give it away\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t think we want to give it away.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t think we want to give away\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014what\u2019s in box number seven.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think they need to find it.\u00a0 You know, one of the things that I like is a page that\u2019s black and white.\u00a0 Well, let me just read it for you:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cTwas the week before Christmas, but nobody knew.\u00a0 No stockings, no ornaments, no gifts or good news.\u00a0 All the world had lost hope; all the people felt fear.\u00a0 Now listen, I\u2019ll tell you why Christmas came near.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen Barbara came up with this, it was a pretty profound experience.\u00a0 I felt like I lost my wife to writing this book of poetry about Christmas for the better part of three or four months.\u00a0 But there was a time when this phrase that I just read came to you, and it was really a pretty cool experience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Most of the poem had been written, and I just had words float through my head for weeks on end.\u00a0 But most of it had been finished and one night, or one early morning\u2014I can\u2019t remember now which it was\u2014between either going to sleep or waking up in the morning \u2013it was one of those moments, and those words just popped into my head.\u00a0 I rolled over and grabbed a piece of paper and a pencil and wrote them down because I thought, \u201cThat\u2019s it.\u00a0 That\u2019s the way to get into this.\u00a0 That\u2019s the way to introduce\u2014\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause really and truly, that\u2019s the way it was.\u00a0 The Bible stopped 400 years before Christ was born.\u00a0 There were no more words written, no more words spoken that were recorded in the Scripture for the people, and the people really did feel hopeless.\u00a0 The Romans were ruling in that time and people were afraid.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t know what the future held.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd into that darkness of their lives and into the darkest time in the calendar, God chose to send His Son.\u00a0 It was an exciting moment to get those words because I really believe God gave those words as an introduction to why He sent Jesus to us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Barbara, if you were going to use this resource with your kids today, if your kids were still at home\u2014and for a while, you had kids from the ages of two to 12.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was a ten-year gap, six kids.\u00a0 How would you use it if you had toddlers and teenagers running around the same house together?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would have my older kids read the story.\u00a0 It\u2019s one of the things we\u2019ve done at Thanksgiving.\u00a0 Now that we\u2019ve got grandkids, who are old enough to read, we engage them and allow them to be the ones to read the Thanksgiving story.\u00a0 I would probably have my older kids read the story, and I would probably be refereeing the younger ones as they anxiously wanted to open the boxes.\u00a0 I would have them have to wait until it was the right time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI do think this is a resource that is something that a family with wide age ranges of kids can use because it\u2019s designed for younger kids to understand; but the words and the poem are intriguing enough that teenagers will be fascinated to listen to it because it\u2019s not a little kid\u2019s story.\u00a0 It\u2019s a grown-up story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want to kind of take some of the pressure off of moms and dads or grandparents who may be listening and thinking about implementing this into their Christmas tradition.\u00a0 Reduce your expectations, especially if the children are under the age of five or six.\u00a0 I just remember that some of these traditions that we did were absolute chaos.\u00a0 I mean, it was not this\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was not Norman Rockwell.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 They weren\u2019t all these children sitting with their hands in their laps, smiling wonderfully as you read the story and as you pull the figurines out.\u00a0 I mean, they may be throwing the figurines at each other, or arguing, or fighting over who gets to open the box.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Probably arguing and fighting over whose turn it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 No doubt about it.\u00a0 I would just say, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t have to be perfect.\u00a0 To execute this, you just need to do it.\u00a0 You just need to keep pressing into it; and when there\u2019s spilled hot chocolate, or tea, or whatever you have as you read this, don\u2019t worry about it.\u00a0 Just keep a sense of humor and keep moving.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it\u2019s nice that the figurines aren\u2019t olive wood or porcelain.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me just comment about my olive wood keepsake that I bought in 1971 when I went to Israel.\u00a0 By the time we finished with our kids, the shepherds\u2019 staffs were gone.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Gone.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes; right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Half of them were there in some, and the chains that were wrapped around the camel\u2019s bridle\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Had been snapped off?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, my goodness.\u00a0 Those were olive wood chains.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 And several of the camels only had three legs, instead of four.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But the good thing is, \u201cJesus survived.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He made it through.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We didn\u2019t lose Him in the process.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He really was the center of it all.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 The big, expensive Nativity scenes\u2014that is not what this is all about.\u00a0 It\u2019s about memories; it\u2019s about story-telling; it\u2019s about reliving; it\u2019s about experiencing Christmas.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s great to have a figure that a four-year-old can pick up and you\u2019re not worried about, \u201cIs that going to break?\u00a0 Is it going to drop?\u201d\u00a0 Dennis talked about this moment not being crowded out of Christmas.\u00a0 I want to ask you about the white-bearded man who shows up every year at Christmas.\u00a0 I just\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You just have to get into something controversial.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I just need to alert the parents who are listening.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to have a candid conversation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re talking about Uncle Ralph?\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re going to have candid questions about Santa Claus.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t want your children to hear our candid conversation about Santa Claus, you may want to switch stations or busy them with something else because I\u2019m just going to ask you, \u201cWhere did Santa fit in at your house and were your kids aware of him?\u00a0 What did they believe about him?\u00a0 How did you handle that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 We allowed our kids to believe in Santa Claus, but we didn\u2019t make a big deal out of it.\u00a0 When they figured it out, we went, \u201cYep, you\u2019re right.\u00a0 It\u2019s no big deal.\u201d\u00a0 We did have stockings; and we put stuff in the stockings, too.\u00a0 But it wasn\u2019t a big ritual tradition to read \u201cThe Night Before Christmas\u201d, which is the Santa story.\u00a0 It\u2019s a great poem; it\u2019s a classic poem.\u00a0 I think we had it as a book; and I think our kids knew pieces of it, but that wasn\u2019t the centerpiece of Christmas for us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did they write letters to Santa?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that, \u201cNo, they didn\u2019t write letters to Santa,\u201d because, again, I was emphasizing what they gave to their siblings and friends and not what they were going to get.\u00a0 They never made a list for Santa.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you take them to the mall, and did they get their picture on Santa\u2019s lap?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think we did a couple of times, but we didn\u2019t go to the mall for the purpose of them getting a picture.\u00a0 The picture that I remember, that\u2019s so funny, is when we had four.\u00a0 Rebecca was a baby, and I went to the photo shop to pick up a roll of film because nothing was digital.\u00a0 I walked in, and the photo shop had a Santa.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo my kids said, \u201cOh, can we go see Santa?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cSure.\u00a0 Why not?\u00a0 Go on.\u201d\u00a0 So we went up there, and they all climbed in his lap; and I had my camera, or else they were taking photos.\u00a0 I can\u2019t remember.\u00a0 I put Rebecca up in his lap, and she just howled.\u00a0 She screamed.\u00a0 She was terrified.\u00a0 I have this little Polaroid-sized snapshot of my four kids, and she\u2019s just screaming her lungs out.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut no, we didn\u2019t make special trips to the mall so they could sit in Santa\u2019s lap.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was there, but he wasn\u2019t the center.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I didn\u2019t want to make a big deal of him by trying to <em>totally <\/em>dismiss him because it\u2019s so much a part of the culture, and kids talk about it at school.\u00a0 Sometimes when you over-emphasize it by trying to get rid of it, it almost makes it worse.\u00a0 We just kind of ignored it and minimized it; and yes, it was there.\u00a0 Our kids did write notes for Santa when they left cookies and milk for us to eat, but even that didn\u2019t last for very long.\u00a0 They figured it out pretty quickly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How are your kids handling this with the grandchildren?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what all of them are doing, quite honestly, but I think the older ones\u2014I know the oldest one is pretty much doing what we did\u2014not making a big deal out of it\u2014but they have stockings and the kids get presents on Christmas morning that supposedly just showed up overnight; but they\u2019re not making a big deal out of it, either.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are going to send all of the kids a set of <em>What God Wants for Christmas;<\/em> right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 I sure will.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then you\u2019ll call and say, \u201cHave you used it yet?\u00a0 Have you used it yet?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 I might, but I don\u2019t want to pressure them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And the reality is, we designed this resource for our kids, for our grandkids, but also for our listeners, and for their kids, and their grandkids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think even those of our listeners\u2014and some of them have already got the <em>What God Wants for Christmas<\/em> Nativity scene\u2014but they don\u2019t have the book that goes with it.\u00a0 Actually, we have redesigned the Nativity scene;
