Day edition here in the United States.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love Thanksgiving!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I think anybody who has listened to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> knows you love it; Barbara loves it.\u00a0 This is your favorite holiday; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it really is.\u00a0 She is the one who taught me to love it.\u00a0 It really is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because of the food; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I like the food.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I really do; but it is the least complicated, less stressful holiday for families of any in the year.\u00a0 It\u2019s just the expectations are\u2014there\u2019s no gifts; you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s because you don\u2019t cook the turkey.\u00a0 That\u2019s why it\u2019s not so stressful.\u00a0 You don\u2019t\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a cheap shot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014have to do the mashed potatoes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a cheap shot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You don\u2019t do any of it.\u00a0 You just sit back and wait for the football games to come on.\u00a0 We know what is going on here.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 No, it\u2019s a great day.\u00a0 We love Thanksgiving.\u00a0 We love it in part because of the focus.\u00a0 This is a holiday that began with a spiritual focus, not because it recounts a story from the Scriptures, but it recounts a story from our history, where people stopped and acknowledged the blessings we enjoy in life that come as a result of God\u2019s grace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 For those of us who live in America, this is the day we declare, \u201cThanksgiving.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We decided, Bob, we would feature a friend of FamilyLife who really unpacks a great passage of Scripture, just around God, being grateful, and looking at life through His eyes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPastor Bobby Scott is going to be our guest preacher today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I got a note from Bobby Scott a while back.\u00a0 He said, \u201cDid you hear about what happened to our family?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 Back in the spring, their house burned down.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t aware of that.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI had an opportunity to talk about that in a sermon I did when I was filling in at a church in Chicago.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI got a lot of positive response from that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got a copy of the sermon, and I listened to it.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cYou know, it would be good for us to remember on Thanksgiving Day\u2014a day that is set aside for thanksgiving\u2014that God calls us to give thanks in all things.\u00a0 He calls us to give thanks, not <em>for<\/em> all things, but <em>in <\/em>all things.\u201d\u00a0 So, even in adversity, like Bobby and his family went through, you learn how to give thanks and see God in the midst of that.\u00a0 In times of blessing and prosperity, we give God thanks in those times, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bobby Scott is the pastor of Los Angeles Community Bible Church since 1994.\u00a0 He and his wife Naomi have six children.\u00a0 He\u2019s just a good guy.\u00a0 He\u2019s just a really good guy who believes in the Scriptures.\u00a0 I think you\u2019re going to be encouraged here on Thanksgiving Day with this message from Psalm 63.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby:<\/strong>\u00a0 [recorded message] We had a tragedy in our family about a month or so ago, on May 28th.\u00a0 It happened about 12 o\u2019clock, midnight.\u00a0 My family was asleep.\u00a0 I was about to go to bed.\u00a0 Then, the last minute I went to look over my sermon one more time (it was a Saturday night).\u00a0 I\u2019m sitting there in our den, and I heard noises.\u00a0 I thought the dog had gotten into the house.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I got up.\u00a0 I looked through our kitchen, our utility room; and our dryer was on fire.\u00a0 I grabbed a bucket of water and threw it on the dryer.\u00a0 It just laughed at my bucket of water.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 So, I\u2019m like, \u201cThis is not going to work.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to have to get out of here.\u201d\u00a0 I ran and woke up my wife.\u00a0 We ran through the house, and we\u2014I think we\u2019re all out, but my wife said that my eight-year-old son had gotten back in bed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I run back into the house.\u00a0 The smoke was horrific at this point.\u00a0 I\u2019m on my hands and knees, patting around trying to feel for him.\u00a0 I found him, picked him up.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t sure I could get out of the house because the smoke was so bad.\u00a0 So, I just ran through\u2014slipper falling off.\u00a0 We\u2019re standing in the driveway, and I\u2019m wet, one slipper, thinking the fire department was going to get there any minute; but they were on another call, just nine blocks north of my house.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy the time they got there, the fire is popping through the roof.\u00a0 We had the horrible experience of watching our house burn; but through it all, God has been so gracious, and faithful, and amazing.\u00a0 Because of that experience, I just have it on my heart to kind of share something from Psalm 63 with you today.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to read out of my <em>New American Standard<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA Psalm of David when he was in the wilderness of Judah: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Oh God, You are my God.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>I shall seek You earnestly; my soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>Thus I\u2019ve seen You in the sanctuary, to see your power and Your glory.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Because Your loving-kindness is better than life, my lips will praise You.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>So I will bless You as long as I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>My soul is satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth offers praises with joyful lips.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>When I remember You on my bed, I mediate on You in the night watches, for You have been my help, and in the shadow of Your wings I sing for joy.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>But those who seek my life, to destroy it, will go into the depths of the earth.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>They will be delivered over to the power of the sword; they will be a prey for foxes.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>But the king will rejoice in God; everyone who swears by Him will glory, for the mouths of those who speak lies will be stopped.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI love being a pastor.\u00a0 I get a chance to do this, to come and to meet brothers and sisters that I have that I don\u2019t know yet.\u00a0 We are brothers and sisters; we just look a little different.\u00a0 I\u2019m a little shorter that\u2019s why.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I just love the family of God\u2014I love Christians.\u00a0 I love the opportunities that I get to do weddings\u2014just stand there and watch people look all googly-eyed at each other.\u00a0 It\u2019s just so cool.\u00a0 I just love that I\u2014baby dedications.\u00a0 It\u2019s just wonderful being a pastor.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s another side of being a pastor that\u2019s very hard.\u00a0 That\u2014there are times when my phone will ring; and I will be at places and times when, \u201cIt\u2019s difficult,\u201d isn\u2019t the word.\u00a0 I had to minister to a family because the son was wrapped up in duct tape, and there was a bullet hole through his head.\u00a0 What do you say?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is a time when, as a pastor, you get a call from a family that their son is very ill, and they just need help.\u00a0 You go there.\u00a0 He has cancer or brain tumor, and it\u2019s protruding out of his head\u2014you can see it.\u00a0 He is about to die.\u00a0 To say, \u201cIt\u2019s hard,\u201d you just have to come up with another category of words to describe what we experience, living in a fallen world.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s nothing new under the sun.\u00a0 We\u2019re sent into the world\u2014with it are broad, <em>disastrous<\/em> consequences.\u00a0 In Genesis, Chapter 4, right after the Fall, there wasn\u2019t innocence; there was just a murder.\u00a0 Listen, a brother killed his very own brother.\u00a0 Can you imagine being the mother, the father, having to bury your son murdered by the hands of your other son?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn Genesis, Chapter 6, the world was so corrupt that God destroyed it with a flood.\u00a0 Because the world was so immoral in Genesis, Chapters 18 and 19, God destroys a city because of their gross immorality, trying to rape an angel.\u00a0 We live in a world that is very broken.\u00a0 We live in a world that is filled with sin, and none of us are spared from it.\u00a0 All of us will go through trials and difficulties that will go beyond our imaginations.\u00a0 Things you pray would never happen will happen.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the psalm we just read, scholars differ over the historical context; but David is fleeing for his life\u2014it\u2019s pretty clear.\u00a0 He\u2019s either running from Saul for his life, or perhaps, he\u2019s running from his very own son, Absalom.\u00a0 It tells us in verse 11 that the king will rejoice.\u00a0 I believe David, here, is speaking of himself in third-person.\u00a0 Here David is running for his life, from his very own son.\u00a0 Can you imagine that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour son has usurped your position and isn\u2019t satisfied with that but wants to kill you.\u00a0 That\u2019s the context of the psalm that we find.\u00a0 That\u2019s the world that we live in.\u00a0 Things like that happen.\u00a0 They happen to even the righteous.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs David goes through this psalm, I\u2019m going to summarize for us just some confessions that we can affirm that can help us when we go through our dark trials.\u00a0 When the sun doesn\u2019t shine, the rain pours in buckets, and it just won\u2019t stop, what do we do?\u00a0 How do we respond?\u00a0 This psalm gives us, I believe, just help; and David\u2019s confessions, that I want to summarize for you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first one I want to give you is found in these first four verses.\u00a0 The point I think the psalmist is making here, as he is going through this trial, is this\u2014that God is better than everything that you will lose.\u00a0 In Psalm 63, David says in verse three, \u201cYour loving-kindness is better than life.\u201d\u00a0 This is a strange psalm, in the sense where David is going through his neediest hour, but he makes no petitions.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s not asking for his throne back.\u00a0 He\u2019s not asking that God would just deliver him from this painful situation.\u00a0 Instead, what he does is he begins to affirm certain things.\u00a0 What he begins to affirm is that, \u201cGod, You are better than everything I will ever lose.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s housed here in verse one where David says, \u201cOh God, You are my God, I shall seek You earnestly.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen he is at his lowest point, where David is looking for\u2014what he is earnestly looking for is <em>God<\/em>.\u00a0 He wants help, and he turns not to his army, not to his mighty men.\u00a0 He turns here, not to his wise counselors, but he turns to his God.\u00a0 The God in\u2014who he knows loves him.\u00a0 Here David cries out, \u201cLord, I\u2019m seeking You.\u00a0 I\u2019m seeking You earnestly.\u201d\u00a0 The idea of seeking God earnestly\u2014it comes from a root noun that is like the dawn of the morning.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, some translations say, \u201cFrom early in the morning hours, I will seek You.\u201d\u00a0 The latter part of the psalm talks about a night watch, as though from his first waking moment until he\u2019s lying on his bed at night, David is crying out to God.\u00a0 He\u2019s searching out for God.\u00a0 He\u2019s seeking for God, and God to be his hope.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, he says, \u201cMy soul thirsts for You; my flesh yearns for You.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cMy soul and my flesh\u201d just talks about everything that David is\u2014like, \u201cFrom my head to my toe, I\u2019m earnestly aching for You, God.\u201d\u00a0 He is seeking for God in a dry and weary land, where there is no water.\u00a0 Have you been in a spiritual state like that?\u00a0 It\u2019s like you\u2019re in a desert, and nothing can quench your thirst.\u00a0 Everything that you expected to happen doesn\u2019t happen.\u00a0 You\u2019re losing everything.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou walked down the aisle, you made a promise, you made a vow; but your marriage is falling apart.\u00a0 He says, \u201cHe\u2019s gone.\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019ve gone to the hospital; you\u2019ve prayed.\u00a0 Your mother is dying.\u00a0 The doctor says, \u201cThere is nothing I can do.\u201d\u00a0 In this life, you will lose everything you love\u2014everything.\u00a0 Our spouses will one day die.\u00a0 Our children will die.\u00a0 Our best friends will die.\u00a0 We will lose everything\u2014everything in this broken, fallen world.\u00a0 The question is, \u201cHow do we respond?\u201d and God will be there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDavid says in verse two, \u201cThus I\u2019ve seen You in the sanctuary to see Your power and Your glory.\u201d\u00a0 What David knows is\u2014what we all know that\u2014what we need in our weakest moment is God.\u00a0 David, here, he is reflecting on experiencing God in this sanctuary and God\u2019s holy place, where God promised to meet Israel.\u00a0 He told them to make a tabernacle.\u00a0 He would meet them there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDavid is reflecting upon his experiences of experiencing God and His power, and His might, and His glory.\u00a0 He knows that is what he needs right now.\u00a0 Sometimes, God will allow us to go through trials just to remind us of that\u2014to stop leaning on crutches, to stop leaning on limbs that are broken and that are weak, but to turn to Him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDavid, here, is just thinking about the God that he experiences, the God that he knows, the God that he remembers, the God that satisfies his soul, even in his hardest moments.\u00a0 He cries out to God, knowing that God is better than life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe knows that He needs God; and this is why\u2014verse 3\u2014because God, \u201cYour loving-kindness is better than (You fill in the blank).\u00a0 It is better than life.\u00a0 It is better than everything that he was losing.\u00a0 Experiencing your loving-kindness is better than that.\u00a0 Your faithful, covenant-keeping, loyal, promise-keeping love is better than everything else that I\u2019m losing right now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when we\u2019re going through a hard trial\u2014and we will.\u00a0 We will lose things that we cherish in this world.\u00a0 In this life, you will.\u00a0 You may have the unfortunate experience of standing and watching your house burn to the ground.\u00a0 You may be in a hospital, holding your mother\u2019s hand while she breathes her last breath.\u00a0 You will lose all sorts of things in this life, but one thing we cannot lose as Christians\u2014we cannot lose God because He loves us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s promised to love us.\u00a0 He says, \u201cNothing can separate us from the love of Christ.\u201d\u00a0 He will always be there, and David, in the midst of his greatest trial\u2014he has nothing, he\u2019s running for his life, he knows he has all that he needs\u2014that God really is enough.\u00a0 He says that God is better than life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, he says, \u201cMy lips will praise you.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s just a spontaneous response that we have to things that we enjoy\u2014that we praise them.\u00a0 Bet you can think of things that you really, really like\u2014you get a new car, you get a promotion, you get an \u201cA\u201d, you get married, you get a child\u2014whatever it is we really, really delight in\u2014what pleases us, we will praise it.\u00a0 It just comes out of our mouth.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere, David is saying, \u201cIt is You, God.\u00a0 It is You.\u00a0 It\u2019s Your loving-kindness that is my treasure.\u201d\u00a0 He praises God.\u00a0 It just starts coming out of his mouth.\u00a0 In the midst of his dark hole, his trial when the buckets are pouring on him, his mouth is saying things because God is there.\u00a0 He is experiencing God\u2019s loving-kindness.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s says, \u201cMy lips will praise You.\u00a0 So, I will bless You as long as I live.\u00a0 I will lift up my hands in Your name.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m not going to be an undercover, secret Christian; I\u2019m going to demonstratively, openly praise You and worship You because You are better than everything that I could possibly lose.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can say that as Christians; but before the storm comes, you got to put the sand bags in first if you want your house not to get flooded.\u00a0 Before the trials come, you\u2019ve got to put certain anchors in place.\u00a0 This is an anchor.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to reflect, and remember, and affirm that God\u2019s loving-kindness is better than everything else that we will lose in life\u2014that God is just better.\u00a0 He is better than everything.\u00a0 That\u2019s a hard lesson to learn\u2014but God, He loves us so much\u2014He wants to teach it to us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe doesn\u2019t want us to be\u2014just to cling to anything else.\u00a0 He just wants us to cling to Him.\u00a0 He is a jealous God.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t want you to cling to your spouse more than Him.\u00a0 He wants you to love Him more than you love your spouse.\u00a0 He wants you to love Him more than you love your children, your career, your job\u2014everything you\u2019ve worked so hard\u2014and God wants to teach you that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe taught me and my wife that lesson about eight years ago\u2014nine years ago.\u00a0 My oldest daughter experienced a bout of cancer, and she had a really rare form that most kids don\u2019t get.\u00a0 Most kids don\u2019t survive.\u00a0 We were afraid we were going to lose her.\u00a0 So, we were praying for God to save our daughter; but we went through this with five other families.\u00a0 We watched all of them lose their daughters.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can\u2019t forget little Kelsey.\u00a0 Her birthday was around the time of Hurricane Katrina.\u00a0 When she watched\u2014she was dying at this point\u2014when she saw all the kids in the Super Dome, she told her mom\u2014she said she wanted to send them something.\u00a0 So, she packed up all of her favorite stuffed animals, and her favorite bears, and toys and had her mom sent her presents to those kids who had just lost everything in Hurricane Katrina.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, it was her birthday; and because she was sick, she got all these extra presents, and money, and stuff like that.\u00a0 So, she wanted to go out shopping.\u00a0 She went out with all this money, and she bought her mom some expensive jewelry.\u00a0 Then, a week after that, curled up in her bed with her mom and dad; she died.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, what do we tell families like that?\u00a0 What do we tell someone who is losing what they cherish so much?\u00a0 Can we tell them this that, \u201cGod will help you,\u201d that, \u201cGod loves you still,\u201d that, \u201cWe can\u2019t measure God\u2019s love for us by our circumstances, living in a fallen world\u201d?\u00a0 We measure God\u2019s love for us by a hill called Calvary, by a cross where Jesus said, \u201cI love you so much.\u201d\u00a0 He stretched out his arms, and He died.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat God loves us even in the broken, fallen world.\u00a0 We will lose everything\u2014His loving-kindness is better than everything in life.\u00a0 We just have to affirm that.\u00a0 When we can affirm that and know that God is our joy, we will be able to praise Him and delight because He is\u2014He is better than everything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 [end of recorded message]\u00a0 Well, we have been listening today to the first part of a message from Pastor Bobby Scott, a message on Psalm 63.\u00a0 There is more to this message that we\u2019re going to hear as we continue this week, but, Dennis, we\u2019ve all been in those kinds of valleys and had to find God there.\u00a0 In fact, I remember when your wife Barbara was with us one time and we were talking about the loss that you experienced, as a family, when your granddaughter, Molly, died after seven days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara said, \u201cThe time she spent with God in that valley was some of the sweetest time in her walk with Him in life.\u201d\u00a0 It was paradoxical because here she was in pain; and yet, God met her there in a deep and profound way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, it\u2019s interesting, Bob.\u00a0 We think the Christian life is primarily about happiness, and about fulfillment, and pleasant things; but I\u2019ve kind switched.\u00a0 I think God is a giver of all kinds of good gifts, and all kinds of great things.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to hear more about that as Bobby Scott finishes this sermon.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve determined that life is about going through those valleys and experiencing God\u2014but there is something about the valley that is both confining and revealing because life is reduced to the basics.\u00a0 On the mountaintop, you can see a lot of things; in the valley, it\u2019s just about what\u2019s in your immediate vicinity.\u00a0 You\u2019re fixed and transfixed there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s in those moments when we experience God.\u00a0 We do, as Bobby said, we find out that He is better than everything we could ever lose in the midst of suffering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Many of our listeners who have, over the last nine months, attended one of our <em>Art of Marriage<\/em>\u00ae video events that have been hosted in cities all around the country\u2014in fact, there have been hundreds of these events hosted.\u00a0 You\u2019ve had the chance to see Bobby Scott.\u00a0 He was one of the people who was featured in the <em>Art of Marriage<\/em> video event and was a great contributor to that event.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI so much appreciate, Dennis, his heart of compassion and comfort.\u00a0 It occurs to me that there are probably folks listening to us today who may be alone, who on this holiday are having a hard day; and I hope Bobby\u2019s message was one of comfort and encouragement for you.\u00a0 I was also thinking there may be folks who are listening and you don\u2019t have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.\u00a0 It is God\u2019s purpose, in redeeming us, to draw us back into the relationship He designed us for in the first place.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBefore our rebellion against God, God walked with Adam in the Garden, in the cool of the day.\u00a0 They enjoyed great fellowship together.\u00a0 That fellowship was broken when Adam rebelled, and that\u2019s been our experience throughout our lives.\u00a0 Until we are reconciled to God through the work that Christ did on the cross, we continue to have a broken Barbara loves it.\u00a0 This is your favorite holiday; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it really is.\u00a0 She is the one who taught me to love it.\u00a0 It really is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because of the food; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I like the food.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I really do; but it is the least complicated, less stressful holiday for families of any in the year.\u00a0 It\u2019s just the expectations are\u2014there\u2019s no gifts; you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s because you don\u2019t cook the turkey.\u00a0 That\u2019s why it\u2019s not so stressful.\u00a0 You don\u2019t\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a cheap shot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014have to do the mashed potatoes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a cheap shot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You don\u2019t do any of it.\u00a0 You just sit back and wait for the football games to come on.\u00a0 We know what is going on here.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 No, it\u2019s a great day.\u00a0 We love Thanksgiving.\u00a0 We love it in part because of the focus.\u00a0 This is a holiday that began with a spiritual focus, not because it recounts a story from the Scriptures, but it recounts a story from our history, where people stopped and acknowledged the blessings we enjoy in life that come as a result of God\u2019s grace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 For those of us who live in America, this is the day we declare, \u201cThanksgiving.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We decided, Bob, we would feature a friend of FamilyLife who really unpacks a great passage of Scripture, just around God, being grateful, and looking at life through His eyes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPastor Bobby Scott is going to be our guest preacher today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I got a note from Bobby Scott a while back.\u00a0 He said, \u201cDid you hear about what happened to our family?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 Back in the spring, their house burned down.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t aware of that.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI had an opportunity to talk about that in a sermon I did when I was filling in at a church in Chicago.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI got a lot of positive response from that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got a copy of the sermon, and I listened to it.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cYou know, it would be good for us to remember on Thanksgiving Day\u2014a day that is set aside for thanksgiving\u2014that God calls us to give thanks in all things.\u00a0 He calls us to give thanks, not <em>for<\/em> all things, but <em>in <\/em>all things.\u201d\u00a0 So, even in adversity, like Bobby and his family went through, you learn how to give thanks and see God in the midst of that.\u00a0 In times of blessing and prosperity, we give God thanks in those times, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bobby Scott is the pastor of Los Angeles Community Bible Church since 1994.\u00a0 He and his wife Naomi have six children.\u00a0 He\u2019s just a good guy.\u00a0 He\u2019s just a really good guy who believes in the Scriptures.\u00a0 I think you\u2019re going to be encouraged here on Thanksgiving Day with this message from Psalm 63.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bobby:<\/strong>\u00a0 [recorded message] We had a tragedy in our family about a month or so ago, on May 28th.\u00a0 It happened about 12 o\u2019clock, midnight.\u00a0 My family was asleep.\u00a0 I was about to go to bed.\u00a0 Then, the last minute I went to look over my sermon one more time (it was a Saturday night).\u00a0 I\u2019m sitting there in our den, and I heard noises.\u00a0 I thought the dog had gotten into the house.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I got up.\u00a0 I looked through our kitchen, our utility room; and our dryer was on fire.\u00a0 I grabbed a bucket of water and threw it on the dryer.\u00a0 It just laughed at my bucket of water.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 So, I\u2019m like, \u201cThis is not going to work.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to have to get out of here.\u201d\u00a0 I ran and woke up my wife.\u00a0 We ran through the house, and we\u2014I think we\u2019re all out, but my wife said that my eight-year-old son had gotten back in bed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I run back into the house.\u00a0 The smoke was horrific at this point.\u00a0 I\u2019m on my hands and knees, patting around trying to feel for him.\u00a0 I found him, picked him up.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t sure I could get out of the house because the smoke was so bad.\u00a0 So, I just ran through\u2014slipper falling off.\u00a0 We\u2019re standing in the driveway, and I\u2019m wet, one slipper, thinking the fire department was going to get there any minute; but they were on another call, just nine blocks north of my house.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy the time they got there, the fire is popping through the roof.\u00a0 We had the horrible experience of watching our house burn; but through it all, God has been so gracious, and faithful, and amazing.\u00a0 Because of that experience, I just have it on my heart to kind of share something from Psalm 63 with you today.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to read out of my <em>New American Standard<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA Psalm of David when he was in the wilderness of Judah: \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Oh God, You are my God.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>I shall seek You earnestly; my soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>Thus I\u2019ve seen You in the sanctuary, to see your power and Your glory.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Because Your loving-kindness is better than life, my lips will praise You.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>So I will bless You as long as I live; I will lift up my hands in Your name.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>My soul is satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth offers praises with joyful lips.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>When I remember You on my bed, I mediate on You in the night watches, for You have been my help, and in the shadow of Your wings I sing for joy.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>But those who seek my life, to destroy it, will go into the depths of the earth.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>They will be delivered over to the power of the sword; they will be a prey for foxes.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>But the king will rejoice in God; everyone who swears by Him will glory, for the mouths of those who speak lies will be stopped.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI love being a pastor.\u00a0 I get a chance to do this, to come and to meet brothers and sisters that I have that I don\u2019t know yet.\u00a0 We are brothers and sisters; we just look a little different.\u00a0 I\u2019m a little shorter that\u2019s why.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I just love the family of God\u2014I love Christians.\u00a0 I love the opportunities that I get to do weddings\u2014just stand there and watch people look all googly-eyed at each other.\u00a0 It\u2019s just so cool.\u00a0 I just love that I\u2014baby dedications.\u00a0 It\u2019s just wonderful being a pastor.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s another side of being a pastor that\u2019s very hard.\u00a0 That\u2014there are times when my phone will ring; and I will be at places and times when, \u201cIt\u2019s difficult,\u201d isn\u2019t the word.\u00a0 I had to minister to a family because the son was wrapped up in duct tape, and there was a bullet hole through his head.\u00a0 What do you say?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is a time when, as a pastor, you get a call from a family that their son is very ill, and they just need help.\u00a0 You go there.\u00a0 He has cancer or brain tumor, and it\u2019s protruding out of his head\u2014you can see it.\u00a0 He is about to die.\u00a0 To say, \u201cIt\u2019s hard,\u201d you just have to come up with another category of words to describe what we experience, living in a fallen world.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s nothing new under the sun.\u00a0 We\u2019re sent into the world\u2014with it are broad, <em>disastrous<\/em> consequences.\u00a0 In Genesis, Chapter 4, right after the Fall, there wasn\u2019t innocence; there was just a murder.\u00a0 Listen, a brother killed his very own brother.\u00a0 Can you imagine being the mother, the father, having to bury your son murdered by the hands of your other son?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn Genesis, Chapter 6, the world was so corrupt that God destroyed it with a flood.\u00a0 Because the world was so immoral in Genesis, Chapters 18 and 19, God destroys a city because of their gross immorality, trying to rape an angel.\u00a0 We live in a world that is very broken.\u00a0 We live in a world that is filled with sin, and none of us are spared from it.\u00a0 All of us will go through trials and difficulties that will go beyond our imaginations.\u00a0 Things you pray would never happen will happen.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the psalm we just read, scholars differ over the historical context; but David is fleeing for his life\u2014it\u2019s pretty clear.\u00a0 He\u2019s either running from Saul for his life, or perhaps, he\u2019s running from his very own son, Absalom.\u00a0 It tells us in verse 11 that the king will rejoice.\u00a0 I believe David, here, is speaking of himself in third-person.\u00a0 Here David is running for his life, from his very own son.\u00a0 Can you imagine that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour son has usurped your position and isn\u2019t satisfied with that but wants to kill you.\u00a0 That\u2019s the context of the psalm that we find.\u00a0 That\u2019s the world that we live in.\u00a0 Things like that happen.\u00a0 They happen to even the righteous.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs David goes through this psalm, I\u2019m going to summarize for us just some confessions that we can affirm that can help us when we go through our dark trials.\u00a0 When the sun doesn\u2019t shine, the rain pours in buckets, and it just won\u2019t stop, what do we do?\u00a0 How do we respond?\u00a0 This psalm gives us, I believe, just help; and David\u2019s confessions, that I want to summarize for you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first one I want to give you is found in these first four verses.\u00a0 The point I think the psalmist is making here, as he is going through this trial, is this\u2014that God is better than everything that you will lose.\u00a0 In Psalm 63, David says in verse three, \u201cYour loving-kindness is better than life.\u201d\u00a0 This is a strange psalm, in the sense where David is going through his neediest hour, but he makes no petitions.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s not asking for his throne back.\u00a0 He\u2019s not asking that God would just deliver him from this painful situation.\u00a0 Instead, what he does is he begins to affirm certain things.\u00a0 What he begins to affirm is that, \u201cGod, You are better than everything I will ever lose.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s housed here in verse one where David says, \u201cOh God, You are my God, I shall seek You earnestly.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen he is at his lowest point, where David is looking for\u2014what he is earnestly looking for is <em>God<\/em>.\u00a0 He wants help, and he turns not to his army, not to his mighty men.\u00a0 He turns here, not to his wise counselors, but he turns to his God.\u00a0 The God in\u2014who he knows loves him.\u00a0 Here David cries out, \u201cLord, I\u2019m seeking You.\u00a0 I\u2019m seeking You earnestly.\u201d\u00a0 The idea of seeking God earnestly\u2014it comes from a root noun that is like the dawn of the morning.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, some translations say, \u201cFrom early in the morning hours, I will seek You.\u201d\u00a0 The latter part of the psalm talks about a night watch, as though from his first waking moment until he\u2019s lying on his bed at night, David is crying out to God.\u00a0 He\u2019s searching out for God.\u00a0 He\u2019s seeking for God, and God to be his hope.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, he says, \u201cMy soul thirsts for You; my flesh yearns for You.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cMy soul and my flesh\u201d just talks about everything that David is\u2014like, \u201cFrom my head to my toe, I\u2019m earnestly aching for You, God.\u201d\u00a0 He is seeking for God in a dry and weary land, where there is no water.\u00a0 Have you been in a spiritual state like that?\u00a0 It\u2019s like you\u2019re in a desert, and nothing can quench your thirst.\u00a0 Everything that you expected to happen doesn\u2019t happen.\u00a0 You\u2019re losing everything.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou walked down the aisle, you made a promise, you made a vow; but your marriage is falling apart.\u00a0 He says, \u201cHe\u2019s gone.\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019ve gone to the hospital; you\u2019ve prayed.\u00a0 Your mother is dying.\u00a0 The doctor says, \u201cThere is nothing I can do.\u201d\u00a0 In this life, you will lose everything you love\u2014everything.\u00a0 Our spouses will one day die.\u00a0 Our children will die.\u00a0 Our best friends will die.\u00a0 We will lose everything\u2014everything in this broken, fallen world.\u00a0 The question is, \u201cHow do we respond?\u201d and God will be there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDavid says in verse two, \u201cThus I\u2019ve seen You in the sanctuary to see Your power and Your glory.\u201d\u00a0 What David knows is\u2014what we all know that\u2014what we need in our weakest moment is God.\u00a0 David, here, he is reflecting on experiencing God in this sanctuary and God\u2019s holy place, where God promised to meet Israel.\u00a0 He told them to make a tabernacle.\u00a0 He would meet them there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDavid is reflecting upon his experiences of experiencing God and His power, and His might, and His glory.\u00a0 He knows that is what he needs right now.\u00a0 Sometimes, God will allow us to go through trials just to remind us of that\u2014to stop leaning on crutches, to stop leaning on limbs that are broken and that are weak, but to turn to Him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDavid, here, is just thinking about the God that he experiences, the God that he knows, the God that he remembers, the God that satisfies his soul, even in his hardest moments.\u00a0 He cries out to God, knowing that God is better than life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe knows that He needs God; and this is why\u2014verse 3\u2014because God, \u201cYour loving-kindness is better than (You fill in the blank).\u00a0 It is better than life.\u00a0 It is better than everything that he was losing.\u00a0 Experiencing your loving-kindness is better than that.\u00a0 Your faithful, covenant-keeping, loyal, promise-keeping love is better than everything else that I\u2019m losing right now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when we\u2019re going through a hard trial\u2014and we will.\u00a0 We will lose things that we cherish in this world.\u00a0 In this life, you will.\u00a0 You may have the unfortunate experience of standing and watching your house burn to the ground.\u00a0 You may be in a hospital, holding your mother\u2019s hand while she breathes her last breath.\u00a0 You will lose all sorts of things in this life, but one thing we cannot lose as Christians\u2014we cannot lose God because He loves us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s promised to love us.\u00a0 He says, \u201cNothing can separate us from the love of Christ.\u201d\u00a0 He will always be there, and David, in the midst of his greatest trial\u2014he has nothing, he\u2019s running for his life, he knows he has all that he needs\u2014that God really is enough.\u00a0 He says that God is better than life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, he says, \u201cMy lips will praise you.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s just a spontaneous response that we have to things that we enjoy\u2014that we praise them.\u00a0 Bet you can think of things that you really, really like\u2014you get a new car, you get a promotion, you get an \u201cA\u201d, you get married, you get a child\u2014whatever it is we really, really delight in\u2014what pleases us, we will praise it.\u00a0 It just comes out of our mouth.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere, David is saying, \u201cIt is You, God.\u00a0 It is You.\u00a0 It\u2019s Your loving-kindness that is my treasure.\u201d\u00a0 He praises God.\u00a0 It just starts coming out of his mouth.\u00a0 In the midst of his dark hole, his trial when the buckets are pouring on him, his mouth is saying things because God is there.\u00a0 He is experiencing God\u2019s loving-kindness.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s says, \u201cMy lips will praise You.\u00a0 So, I will bless You as long as I live.\u00a0 I will lift up my hands in Your name.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m not going to be an undercover, secret Christian; I\u2019m going to demonstratively, openly praise You and worship You because You are better than everything that I could possibly lose.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can say that as Christians; but before the storm comes, you got to put the sand bags in first if you want your house not to get flooded.\u00a0 Before the trials come, you\u2019ve got to put certain anchors in place.\u00a0 This is an anchor.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to reflect, and remember, and affirm that God\u2019s loving-kindness is better than everything else that we will lose in life\u2014that God is just better.\u00a0 He is better than everything.\u00a0 That\u2019s a hard lesson to learn\u2014but God, He loves us so much\u2014He wants to teach it to us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe doesn\u2019t want us to be\u2014just to cling to anything else.\u00a0 He just wants us to cling to Him.\u00a0 He is a jealous God.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t want you to cling to your spouse more than Him.\u00a0 He wants you to love Him more than you love your spouse.\u00a0 He wants you to love Him more than you love your children, your career, your job\u2014everything you\u2019ve worked so hard\u2014and God wants to teach you that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe taught me and my wife that lesson about eight years ago\u2014nine years ago.\u00a0 My oldest daughter experienced a bout of cancer, and she had a really rare form that most kids don\u2019t get.\u00a0 Most kids don\u2019t survive.\u00a0 We were afraid we were going to lose her.\u00a0 So, we were praying for God to save our daughter; but we went through this with five other families.\u00a0 We watched all of them lose their daughters.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can\u2019t forget little Kelsey.\u00a0 Her birthday was around the time of Hurricane Katrina.\u00a0 When she watched\u2014she was dying at this point\u2014when she saw all the kids in the Super Dome, she told her mom\u2014she said she wanted to send them something.\u00a0 So, she packed up all of her favorite stuffed animals, and her favorite bears, and toys and had her mom sent her presents to those kids who had just lost everything in Hurricane Katrina.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, it was her birthday; and because she was sick, she got all these extra presents, and money, and stuff like that.\u00a0 So, she wanted to go out shopping.\u00a0 She went out with all this money, and she bought her mom some expensive jewelry.\u00a0 Then, a week after that, curled up in her bed with her mom and dad; she died.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, what do we tell families like that?\u00a0 What do we tell someone who is losing what they cherish so much?\u00a0 Can we tell them this that, \u201cGod will help you,\u201d that, \u201cGod loves you still,\u201d that, \u201cWe can\u2019t measure God\u2019s love for us by our circumstances, living in a fallen world\u201d?\u00a0 We measure God\u2019s love for us by a hill called Calvary, by a cross where Jesus said, \u201cI love you so much.\u201d\u00a0 He stretched out his arms, and He died.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat God loves us even in the broken, fallen world.\u00a0 We will lose everything\u2014His loving-kindness is better than everything in life.\u00a0 We just have to affirm that.\u00a0 When we can affirm that and know that God is our joy, we will be able to praise Him and delight because He is\u2014He is better than everything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 [end of recorded message]\u00a0 Well, we have been listening today to the first part of a message from Pastor Bobby Scott, a message on Psalm 63.\u00a0 There is more to this message that we\u2019re going to hear as we continue this week, but, Dennis, we\u2019ve all been in those kinds of valleys and had to find God there.\u00a0 In fact, I remember when your wife Barbara was with us one time and we were talking about the loss that you experienced, as a family, when your granddaughter, Molly, died after seven days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara said, \u201cThe time she spent with God in that valley was some of the sweetest time in her walk with Him in life.\u201d\u00a0 It was paradoxical because here she was in pain; and yet, God met her there in a deep and profound way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, it\u2019s interesting, Bob.\u00a0 We think the Christian life is primarily about happiness, and about fulfillment, and pleasant things; but I\u2019ve kind switched.\u00a0 I think God is a giver of all kinds of good gifts, and all kinds of great things.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to hear more about that as Bobby Scott finishes this sermon.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve determined that life is about going through those valleys and experiencing God\u2014but there is something about the valley that is both confining and revealing because life is reduced to the basics.\u00a0 On the mountaintop, you can see a lot of things; in the valley, it\u2019s just about what\u2019s in your immediate vicinity.\u00a0 You\u2019re fixed and transfixed there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s in those moments when we experience God.\u00a0 We do, as Bobby said, we find out that He is better than everything we could ever lose in the midst of suffering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Many of our listeners who have, over the last nine months, attended one of our <em>Art of Marriage<\/em>\u00ae video events that have been hosted in cities all around the country\u2014in fact, there have been hundreds of these events hosted.\u00a0 You\u2019ve had the chance to see Bobby Scott.\u00a0 He was one of the people who was featured in the <em>Art of Marriage<\/em> video event and was a great contributor to that event.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI so much appreciate, Dennis, his heart of compassion and comfort.\u00a0 It occurs to me that there are probably folks listening to us today who may be alone, who on this holiday are having a hard day;
