and say, \u2018Look at my nice seashells,\u2019\u201d ? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe makes the point pretty compellingly that our lives ought to be about something more than that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think so.\u00a0 When Jesus passed off of the planet, He gave those who professed to follow Christ what\u2019s called the Great Commission.\u00a0 He commissioned us with a task.\u00a0 He said, \u201cGo, therefore, and make disciples of all nations.\u201d\u00a0 The Great Commission is not optional.\u00a0 Every listener who\u2019s listening to our voices right now needs to be evaluating his or her life on what part of the Great Commission you\u2019re involved in.\u00a0 Every one of us has got an assignment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEphesians, Chapter 2, verse 10, makes it very clear, \u201cWe are His workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, which He prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.\u201d\u00a0 He has got an assignment for you.\u00a0 The question is, \u201cWhat is your assignment?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe believe here at FamilyLife that we have a gargantuan need here in our country of marriages and families being overtaken by evil, and we think the only way we are going to be able to address this problem is by unleashing the army\u2014turning you loose, as a listener, to make an impact in your neighborhood, your church, your community, your business, your city, and your state.\u00a0 We believe the hope of the home is found in the Gospel, put in the hands of people like you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you are saying if folks aren\u2019t sure what their assignment ought to be, you have a suggestion for them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have more than a suggestion.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I have an invitation, and I have a challenge.\u00a0 What we\u2019re going to hear on today\u2019s broadcast is a message that I gave to a group of folks who were 50 to 75.\u00a0 It is called SageWorks, and our church asked me to come in and speak.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is Part Two of a two-part message that I gave to them, challenging them to think through, \u201cWhat\u2019s my assignment?\u00a0 What am I doing?\u00a0 Why am I here?\u00a0 What\u2019s my purpose?\u00a0 If God is at work, where is that; and how can I join Him in that?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the points that you made in that message is that we should not give our lives to lesser things\u2014to seashell collections as what fills our days.\u00a0 Here is Part Two of that message from Dennis Rainey, calling men and women to become HomeBuilders.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> [recorded message] This generational responsibility is spoken of in Psalm 78, where it says, \u201cHe established a testimony in Jacob and appointed law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers to teach their children, that the next generation might know, even the children yet unborn and arise to tell them to their children; so that, they would place their hope in God.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy assignment is not just me.\u00a0 My assignment is to my children, to my children\u2019s children, and to instruct them to teach their children\u2014four generations.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDietrich Bonhoeffer has written, \u201cIt is the righteous man who lives for the next generation.\u201d\u00a0 That used to be my favorite quote by Dietrich Bonhoeffer.\u00a0 The one that has replaced it is a chilling quote, \u201cThe greatest gift one generation gives another is a moral society.\u201d\u00a0 When I read that quote, I immediately went to my typewriter and sent all of my adult children an e-mail, apologizing to them that we, in our generation, and their mother and I, have failed to give them a more moral society than the one we were given.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cThe greatest gift one generation gives another is a moral society.\u201d\u00a0 Well, what are we to do about all this?\u00a0 Well, I\u2019ve got three very simple points.\u00a0 Number one, I believe it begins as you and I surrender our lives to Jesus Christ afresh.\u00a0 Romans 12:1 and 2, \u201cDo not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.\u201d\u00a0 He says, \u201cI urge you, therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God to present your bodies a living a sacrifice.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s how we avoid being conformed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think there is a fresh need to talk about our surrender to Jesus Christ.\u00a0 I can tell you personally that after 43 years of attempting to walk with Christ, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t get any easier to surrender to Christ.\u201d\u00a0 Someone has said, \u201cThe doors of opportunity swing on the little hinges of obedience.\u201d\u00a0 Are you surrendered?\u00a0 Are you <em>all in<\/em>?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA second thing you need to do, after you\u2019ve settled the issue of surrender, is to determine your cause\u2014determine your cause.\u00a0 Now, there are all kinds of causes today, but I just want to break it out into two kinds of causes.\u00a0 There are little causes, and there are big causes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLittle causes may be like this one.\u00a0 This past Christmas, I told you that Barbara and I went to New York City for Christmas.\u00a0 We went to Broadway.\u00a0 We had some meetings up there, and we had a couple of hours to burn before we had to catch our flight.\u00a0 So, we went into Grand Central Station.\u00a0 We walked into this cute, French shop that was filled with all kinds of gadgets\u2014high color, vibrant, fun store.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, Barbara and I went in there; and she found a couple of bibs for the twins and had brought them over there.\u00a0 I walked by this counter, and there on the counter were two books\u2014both, \u201cF- you\u201d.\u00a0 I looked\u2014and it was spelled out\u2014I looked at that; and I went, \u201cYou know, I didn\u2019t ask to see that.\u00a0 I\u2019m just shopping.\u201d\u00a0 So, I said\u2014Barbara came over with the bibs\u2014and she said, \u201cDo you want to buy them?\u201d\u00a0 After we saw these things, I said, \u201cNo, put them back.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I\u2019m leaving; and I\u2019m having this argument with God, \u201cWhat\u2019s it going to matter?\u00a0 Why say anything?\u00a0 Will this guy even listen to me?\u00a0 Is the owner even here?\u201d\u00a0 So, I looked over at the cash register, and I saw a guy who was grey.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cI bet that\u2019s the owner.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m not going to talk to him.\u00a0 So, I walk on out.\u00a0 There was a guy standing at the door.\u00a0 I said, \u201cBy chance, is the owner here?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cYes.\u00a0 That\u2019s the guy at the cash register.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I went, \u201cRats!\u00a0 I\u2019m going to have to go talk to him.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I went back over to the guy, and I introduced myself.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI just wanted you to know I just was about to be a customer.\u00a0 I just have to tell you, you have a great shop.\u201d\u00a0 It was a shop.\u00a0 \u201cWe were enjoying your shop, but I\u2019m really offended by those books that you\u2019ve got down there at eye level where children can take a look at them.\u00a0 I saw one mother who walked by and just shook her head in disgust.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cYour store is above that.\u00a0 You shouldn\u2019t have that kind of stuff in here.\u201d\u00a0 He looked back at me.\u00a0 He said, \u201cWell, I really appreciate you saying something.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been in a debate with my employees about that, and they think I need to have it.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure about it, but I appreciate you saying something.\u201d\u00a0 There are the little causes that you and I walk by all the time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll never forget this statement by Norman Schwarzkopf.\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou send your sons and daughters to go to war, and I\u2019m in charge of them.\u00a0 You do not pay me to walk by little mistakes.\u201d\u00a0 In the military, there is no such thing as a little mistake.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to tell you something, \u201cIn God\u2019s economy, there aren\u2019t any such things as little issues.\u201d\u00a0 We just need to engage them politely, gently, and see how God uses our conversation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is a target-rich environment we\u2019re talking about here, folks.\u00a0 Here is my question for you.\u00a0 Right now, if I told you, \u201cThis room had been surrounded by a militia.\u00a0 You have to go outside and line up against a church wall out there and give your life for something because they are going to shoot you.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can\u2019t say, \u201cJesus,\u201d because we\u2019d all agree we\u2019d give our lives for Him.\u00a0 You can\u2019t say, \u201cYour wife,\u201d and you can\u2019t say, \u201cYour kids,\u201d\u2014what would be the cause outside of your marriage, your family, your immediate faith with Christ\u2014what would be the cause that you would be willing to go outside and die for?\u00a0 \u201cWhat <em>is<\/em> my cause?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis may shock you, but I have actually done more career counseling in leading FamilyLife, as an organization, than I have marriage counseling.\u00a0 I am convinced, after talking with hundreds of men and women, most of us never get around to answering this question.\u00a0 What am I willing to die for?\u00a0 That\u2019s how you determine what you\u2019d be willing to live for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s your assignment.\u00a0 Pray for 30 days.\u00a0 Say, \u201cLord God, Maker of heaven and earth, Who created 40,000 kinds of butterflies.\u00a0 If You have that kind of intricacy to detail, You can help me determine my cause.\u00a0 What is Your cause?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor those of you who are here with your spouse, I think there ought to be a sense in which together, collectively, at this stage of your lives, you pull back as you think about SageWorks; and you look at that and you go, \u201cWhat is our cause as a couple, where we can roll up our sleeves together and get dirt and earth under our fingernails because we\u2019re in spiritual battle?\u201d\u00a0 Thirty days\u2014have you got it?\u00a0 Have you got your cause?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThird, not only do we need to surrender our lives to Christ; secondly, determine our cause; but third, we need to courageously step up and step out in faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m really pleased that a book that I have been working on for 12 years is done.\u00a0 It\u2019s a book to men called <em>Stepping Up<\/em>.\u00a0 In case you are wondering, I don\u2019t take a penny from any of the books.\u00a0 I\u2019ve donated all the royalties to them.\u00a0 It\u2019s not about\u2014if you want to buy them, that\u2019s great\u2014it\u2019s not about feathering my nest.\u00a0 It\u2019s about reaching out to others.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is a quote in here from a Dockers\u00ae jean commercial that I want to read to you because this, to me, hits men right in the chest.\u00a0 It is a call to them to step up and make a difference where they live.\u00a0 Listen carefully.\u00a0 This is a Dockers jean commercial that ran in magazines:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Once upon a time, men wore the pants and wore them well.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>Women rarely had to open doors, and little, old ladies never had to cross the street alone.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>Men took charge because that\u2019s what they did; but somewhere along the way, the world decided it no longer needed men.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>Disco by disco, latte by foamy, non-fat latte, men were stripped of their khakis and left stranded on the road between boyhood and androgyny.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>But today, there are questions our genderless society has no answers for.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>The world sits idly by as cities crumble, children misbehave, and those little, old ladies remain on one side of the street. For the first time since bad guys, we need heroes.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>We need grown-ups.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>We need men to put down the plastic fork, step away from the salad bar, and untie the world from the tracks of complacency.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>It\u2019s time to get your hands dirty.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>It\u2019s time to answer the call of manhood.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>It\u2019s time to wear the pants.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf Dockers can say that, for goodness sakes, what should we be saying?\u00a0 Calling men to step up, set out, and make a difference.\u00a0 I love what Howard Hendricks says, \u201cThe day your past becomes more exciting than your future is the day you start to die.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ll read it again.\u00a0 \u201cThe day your past becomes more exciting than your future is the day you start to die.\u201d\u00a0 What are you dreaming about for the future?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou say, \u201cWell, Dennis, my goodness!\u00a0 Look at our age.\u201d\u00a0 Well, you know what?\u00a0 There have been some people after 65, 70, and 75, who have gone on to make a huge difference.\u00a0 I could point you to one Miss Kitty Longstreth, who is a <em>model\u2014<\/em>I mean, a <em>gargantuan<\/em> model of how God uses an available soul.\u00a0 <br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you courageously step up and step out in faith, expect hardship.\u00a0 Don\u2019t expect the success you, maybe had, or perhaps, experienced and enjoyed in business; ministry is spiritual warfare.\u00a0 It\u2019s tough.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t always end pretty.\u00a0 I love what Churchill said, \u201cCourage is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.\u201d\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that good?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI close with this story.\u00a0 David Livingstone, who for more than four decades served Jesus Christ on the continent of Africa, introducing Africans of all stripes to Christ, was dying of malaria and dysentery.\u00a0 He was so weakened that he had to be pulled out of bed at his request to get on his knees.\u00a0 He wanted to die praying for Africa on his knees.\u00a0 They came into his room and found him face down in a pillow on his knees, hands stretched out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLivingstone had given them permission to bury his body in Westminster Abbey in London, but he had told them to remove his heart from his body and bury it under a Mvula tree in Africa.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s the question, \u201cWhere do you want your heart buried?--by the TV?\u2014the golf course?\u2014fishing dock?\u201d\u00a0 I just have to tell you that there is nothing wrong with watching TV, nothing wrong with hunting, fishing.\u00a0 I enjoy them all; but the question is, \u201cWhere do you want to bury your heart?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 [end of recorded message]\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ve been listening to Part Two of a message from Dennis Rainey calling men and women to be HomeBuilders and to invest in the right stuff.\u00a0 Some of our listeners, Dennis, are going to be called by God in different directions.\u00a0 Marriage and families are not going to be what they are called to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are a lot of folks who are not even asking the question, \u201cWhere do I want my heart buried?\u201d\u00a0 They need to stop and ask that question.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, here is the question, \u201cWhat are you passionate about?\u201d\u00a0 What if right now we circled your car, or your home, or wherever it is you\u2019re listening to this broadcast\u2014we circled it with a group of terrorists who ask you to come outside and give your life for something.\u00a0 What would you give your life for?\u00a0 What is your cause?\u00a0 What are you passionate about?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, then, you know what?\u00a0 Maybe you need to find some fresh ways to express your passion.\u00a0 For a lot of our listeners, Bob, there are a bunch of them who are already very busy; and they are busy about the right thing.\u00a0 I\u2019m not talking about adding more to peoples\u2019 plates who already have a commission and are already a part of the Great Commission.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to tell you something.\u00a0 Our marriages and families today\u2014they are in trouble.\u00a0 They are in deep trouble.\u00a0 The biggest problem in America today is not an economic problem; it is not a political problem.\u00a0 It is a problem in our homes.\u00a0 If we continue to allow the family to be devoured by evil, our children, our grandchildren, our great grandchildren are going to pay the price.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe may be gone.\u00a0 We may be done with it;
