You\u2019ve heard the phrase \u201chelicopter parents.\u201d\u00a0 Those are the moms and dads who seem to hover around their child at all times\u2014making sure that <em>nothing<\/em> goes wrong, that the child is <em>always <\/em>doing what he or she ought to be doing.\u00a0 John Fuller can relate to that a little bit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think, as a new dad, I wanted it all to be right.\u00a0 So, when my three-year-old had to be reminded for the fourth time that he shouldn\u2019t do something, I jumped on him.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s a very common thing for a new dad.\u00a0 That\u2019s not appropriate.\u00a0 One of the things that I have learned is to look more at the character because these little things, the externals, they\u2019ll come and go; but I want to see heart here.\u00a0 I want to see a character that reflects Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, November 4th.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife\u00ae, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 John Fuller joins us today with some wise counsel for dads who are becoming dads for the first time.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I\u2019m just curious if you were sitting down with a young man, and he said, \u201cDennis, I just learned my wife\u2019s expecting\u2014going to be a dad for the first time.\u201d\u00a0 You were to say to him, \u201cWell, listen, I just have one piece of advice for you as you get ready to be a dad for the first time.\u201d\u00a0 Do you know how you would complete that sentence?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know what my first response would be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019d say, \u201cFind a man who is a lap or two ahead of you in the race of life and develop a relationship with him.\u00a0 Say, \u2018You know, as I start this thing out for the next three or four years\u2014and we can make it a one-year renewable term, if you want to do that; so it\u2019s not permanent\u2014would you mind mentoring me on what it means to be a father, to be the husband of your wife who\u2019s now a mother, and how you begin to shape this thing called fatherhood?\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re not going to get the right messages from the culture.\u00a0 You need somebody who has been there and someone who is anchored in the Scriptures to do that.\u00a0 We have a gentleman who is with us today, a friend, John Fuller, co-host of <em>Focus on the Family<\/em>.\u00a0 We\u2019re just thrilled to have you on the broadcast, John.\u00a0 It is good to have you on our home turf here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is <em>fun<\/em> to be here with you guys.\u00a0 I wish we had a couple of days to sit off mike and chat because I love and appreciate you both.\u00a0 You both have spoken into my life over the years in some pretty significant ways\u2014real honor to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 John has just finished a book called <em>First Time Dad<\/em>.\u00a0 He is the father to six.\u00a0 I just have to ask you, John, because I really wanted to know more about this relationship as I was reading your book, \u201cWhat do you remember most about your dad?\u00a0 What do you appreciate most about him?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have a good dad.\u00a0 Growing up, he worked hard, usually, six days a week (although that sixth day was often a half day).\u00a0 He pulled me into his work world.\u00a0 I have memories of going\u2014he was a manager at a paper mill.\u00a0 So, I\u2019d go with him and sit at his desk, kind of look around, see him interacting with people.\u00a0 He was dedicated to us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs a young kid, I think eight years old, I tried out for little league.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have the tools to make it.\u00a0 My dad noticed that there were other dads hurting for their kids, who didn\u2019t make little league.\u00a0 So, he and another guy started something called the Independent League in our little community for guys who weren\u2019t good enough for little league but wanted to play.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, they set up this league where\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love it! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014every kid was guaranteed\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014three innings of play.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s great.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 It turned out\u2014I think it is still going today.\u00a0 He was devoted to helping me in some areas where I needed to grow.\u00a0 So, a good dad, fun.\u00a0 We had a lot of laughs\u2014great sense of humor.\u00a0 I picked up on that.\u00a0 To this day, some of the richest times in my own family, are those moments where we\u2019re all together at the table laughing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m sure, when you became a first-time dad, instinctively you drew on some of what he had modeled for you.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking about my own experience of becoming a first-time dad and thinking\u2014I came in (we talked about this already this week)\u2014I came in pretty confidently thinking, \u201cYes.\u00a0 I can handle this.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got this down.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you pretty cocky?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I was not was all that purposeful or intentional.\u00a0 If I were sitting down with a guy who had just come to me and said, \u201cI\u2019m about to be a first-time dad, what one piece of advice would you give me?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m curious how you would answer that question, too; but I\u2019d say to the guy, \u201cThink about what you\u2019d like your new son or daughter to be like at age 18 or 20.\u00a0 That\u2019s not going to happen just by accident, just naturally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIf you\u2019re not purposeful and intentional\u2014if you don\u2019t have some strategies in place as a dad to figure out how we get from here to there\u2014how we make sure that the child at 18 is thinking and feeling these ways\u2014then it probably won\u2019t happen.\u00a0 You need to have some intentionality and some strategy.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat, I don\u2019t think I had.\u00a0 I just thought, \u201cAs long as I\u2019m around, I\u2019m fun, and we have a good relationship\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And we have a Christian home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s going to be\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019ll all turn out okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014like osmosis.\u00a0 They are going to absorb it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If I were going back and starting again, I\u2019d have a little more of a business plan in mind for how the child is going to get from here to there.\u00a0 You know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How would you answer the question, John?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 You kind of stole my answer there, Bob.\u00a0 I would have something similar to that.\u00a0 I think I\u2019d capture it with the word perspective.\u00a0 As\u2014particularly, in this season of life\u2014we have three teenage girls.\u00a0 They give me a hard time because I often follow that little statement up with a, \u201cPray for me,\u201d because I have three teenage girls.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI need a man cave or something; but I often tell them, \u201cNo, no.\u00a0 I talk good about you.\u201d\u00a0 I really <em>do<\/em> love having those girls.\u00a0 They are <em>wonderful<\/em>, but if you don\u2019t have perspective and that new child\u2014when that two-year-old looks at you and says, \u201cNo\u201d\u2014if you don\u2019t have a perspective that, \u201cOh, this is going to be a long haul now,\u201d that first \u201cNo,\u201d is going to go on for 12, 15 years, or longer.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t have that perspective, it\u2019s going to be a really difficult slog.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI like what you said there about intentionality because we do need to have some strategies.\u00a0 I think a lot of guys just show up and think, \u201cThat\u2019s it.\u00a0 I just have to be there, occasionally.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think perspective, at least right now, is helping me particularly with the teen years because if you get lost on those little things and you\u2019re not looking down the road to the day, \u201cNow, they are leaving soon,\u201d you might make some mistakes.\u00a0 So, perspective; I like intentionality.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis, I think you captured the heart of what I wanted with this book, which was some friendly mentoring through a book that says, \u201cHere is how you navigate some of these years.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how you get ready for some of what\u2019s coming up.\u00a0 Here are some of the joys and challenges of being a dad.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you\u2019re done, John, when you\u2019re all the way at the end of being done as a parent, how do you want your kids to describe your intentionality that we\u2019re talking about here?\u00a0 You are a man of perspective.\u00a0 You\u2019re a student of the Bible.\u00a0 You interview\u2014help interview people, experts, on a daily radio program\u2014so, you\u2019re being mentored by\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 All the time it seems.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 All the time.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s like I\u2019d go home from work some days, and I can\u2019t believe that I get paid for this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob and I have just been <em>two hours<\/em> with someone who was teaching <em>me<\/em> how to teach the Christian life to people.\u00a0 Of course, we get to pass it on to our listeners.\u00a0 If you could fast forward all the way to the end, how do you want your children to have remembered you as a father?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think it would be one of my kids\u2014they\u2019ve already given the handle that I like.\u00a0 It\u2019s one of my three teenage daughters.\u00a0 We were\u2014I cannot remember the circumstances\u2014but she looked at me and said, \u201cOh, you\u2019re the \u2018Grace Guy.\u2019\u00a0 You\u2019re the \u2018Grace Guy.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just thought\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 The daughter saying this is a rather performance-oriented, rules-oriented kind of kid.\u00a0 For her to say that to me\u2014just was powerful.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cOh, I want to be the \u2018Grace Guy.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 I want to be the guy that represents God\u2019s grace to my kids.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to be the guy that spent all of my time forming the rules and making sure they adhered to every little one.\u00a0 I want to get past that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to look at the heart and to realize that, while you want adherence\u2014eventually, you\u2019ve got to loosen up.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to throw the kid the opportunity to make some choices, to make some mistakes.\u00a0 To demonstrate grace means we\u2019re going to overlook the offense, and we\u2019re going to just lavish love on you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, that doesn\u2019t mean there are no consequences; but I think for that child who said, \u201cYou\u2019re the \u2018Grace Guy,\u2019\u201d it is because I time and again would come to a point and say, \u201cYou know what you did was wrong, and there is a consequence; but you\u2019re totally forgiven.\u00a0 I love you.\u00a0 I always will.\u00a0 Now, let\u2019s forget it and move on.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat might be better described as mercy by some, but for this child who always wanted to hit the rules\u2014for the rest of the kids, too, I think they\u2019ve seen that there\u2019s a little more openness and a lot less concern on all the little rules.\u00a0 Those are important, but we\u2019re less concerned with that and much more concerned with, \u201cWho are <em>you<\/em>?\u00a0 Who are you <em>inside<\/em>?\u00a0 What\u2019s your walk with God <em>really<\/em> like?\u201d\u00a0 These little things, the externals, they\u2019ll come and go; but I want to see heart here.\u00a0 I want to see a character that reflects Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf I communicate that in a gracious way, I guess that would be how they\u2019ve caught that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think of First Corinthians 13, how you just described that kind of love that is written about by the Apostle Paul\u2014love that is long-suffering, that believes the best, hopes the best, endures all things.\u00a0 That is <em>so tough<\/em> in the heat of the moment.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou described me as a younger father when I was very rules-oriented and really caught up in wanting the children to fulfill the letter of the law.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re a Christian home; you\u2019ve got to behave a certain way.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Sometimes parents can wrap their own ego around it and go, \u201cOur kids are a reflection of us.\u00a0 Good grief!\u00a0 What are people going to think about us?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you\u2019re on a national radio program talking about focusing on the family.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I mean, that just adds another layer to it here; doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 I joke with friends that I have a ministry to help them feel better about their families when my kids do certain things.\u00a0 It\u2019s kind of like, \u201cYour kid isn\u2019t as bad as my kids.\u00a0 So, feel good about that; would you?\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 In a mentoring situation, what you\u2019re talking about here is so important\u2014is to take some of the conscientiousness and\u2014it\u2019s interesting.\u00a0 It\u2019s a delicate balance here.\u00a0 You <em>don\u2019t<\/em> want the dad to become so free, so without boundaries, that he says, \u201cThat\u2019s alright.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWhatever.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cAnything goes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are families where that happens.\u00a0 The mom is the one who is trying to tow the line with the rules.\u00a0 Of course, there is great tension in that family, in that marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 In your relationship with Dena, who is the rule maker?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 It depends.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 It depends on the age of the child and what the situation is.\u00a0 Dena\u2014if Dena were here, she would say, \u201cJohn is better with the teenagers.\u00a0 He\u2019s better when the kids are older.\u201d\u00a0 I think her sweet spot has been <em>training<\/em> those kids when they are younger.\u00a0 There is a natural problem that occurs when kids hit their teens, though, and that is mom\u2019s want to continue \u201cmommy-ing\u201d often.\u00a0 Dad is getting ready to say, \u201cYes.\u00a0 You are on your own, baby.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to be moving out here soon.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think I\u2019ve been able to demonstrate to the kids what grace is and help them in that age range a little bit better than I did when I was younger.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me pick up on something you said because I felt it, too.\u00a0 When the kids were younger, it often felt like that was Mary Ann\u2019s turf.\u00a0 She was more naturally inclined in that area.\u00a0 Still, as a dad, I recognized that I needed to press into that area and not just abandon and say, \u201cI\u2019ll wait to their teens, and then I\u2019ll engage.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it was the things like reading to them at night, at bedtime.\u00a0 It was the opportunities that I took to enter into their world, even though I didn\u2019t necessarily feel all that well-equipped.\u00a0 It felt a little awkward to me, and it felt like it was more Mary Ann\u2019s sweet spot.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA first-time dad can\u2019t just tune out for the first ten years of a child\u2019s life and then think, \u201cOkay, now I\u2019ll get involved;\u201d right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is <em>so well<\/em> said, Bob.\u00a0 I remember a co-worker who was (to use Dennis\u2019 words) a couple of laps in the race ahead of me.\u00a0 He looked at me one time and he said, \u201cYou know, kids are really just\u2014they\u2019re no good until you can talk to them at about nine or ten.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 This is a Christian dad with four kids.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m happy to say I disregarded that advice and found ways to get on the floor, roll around, and wrestle with my kids when they were younger\u2014to have fun at their level.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t come naturally.\u00a0 I get tired of playing Lego\u2019s\u00ae for two hours\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014when the little boy doesn\u2019t.\u00a0 I <em>really<\/em> don\u2019t like, Bob, sitting down having <em>tea parties <\/em>with my little girls at the little thing with the dolls or the animals.\u00a0 I mean, that\u2019s insufferable at times; but you\u2019re point is so well-made.\u00a0 We have to do that as guys, particularly, when they are younger.\u00a0 That is such a crucial time for us, as dads, to plug-in.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, yes, you\u2019re going to be feeling awkward a lot; but it is <em>absolutely<\/em> worth it.\u00a0 Eventually, you\u2019re going to like some of that.\u00a0 I mean, I miss the tea party days, okay?\u00a0 My girls don\u2019t invite me to do that anymore.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe touched on that last time\u2014the season is very short.\u00a0 So, when you have an opportunity\u2014and I had to do this, by the way, writing this book\u2014I had to say, \u201cThe book will wait.\u00a0 My kids want time with me.\u201d\u00a0 So, make the choice to be there for them and to do something with them from day one.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI used to rock Dakota to bed every night to sleep.\u00a0 I\u2019d sing <em>Amazing Grace<\/em> and some other songs.\u00a0 I <em>loved<\/em> those days.\u00a0 It was\u2014that was not intuitive for me, but I came to <em>love<\/em> those days.\u00a0 Well, he\u2019s 23 years old and doesn\u2019t call me and ask me to sing him to sleep anymore at night.\u00a0 Those are rich moments.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, as dads, we have to recognize that we have great power in those younger years, in particular.\u00a0 We have to show up and do fathering well.\u00a0 We have to do so because we\u2019re called to and because in a short time, those moments are gone.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just a little glimmer of hope for you here.\u00a0 The other night I got to rock and sing to my grandson.\u00a0 So, those\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s coming.\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014days are ahead.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s rich time; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, there is a reason why Dakota doesn\u2019t ask you to rock him.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t he the one who is 6\u20198\u201d?\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, picture <em>that<\/em> in a rocking chair!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 It just wouldn\u2019t work.\u00a0 It would be very difficult.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just for a moment, I want you to tell us how you would apply\u2014you\u2019re \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMr. Grace, alright\u2014you\u2019re\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 By the way, that\u2019s just God\u2019s work in my life; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I understand; I understand.\u00a0 I just want to hear\u2014I want to hear how it occurred practically in the area of teenage girls and modest dress.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, it would <em>never<\/em> happen in your household; but if one of your daughters came down ready for church, or came down ready for school, wearing something that she\u2019d worn her mother out at the mall about that\u2014she\u2019d been able to purchase and it wasn\u2019t the right thing\u2014it was immodest.\u00a0 How would Mr. Grace handle that moment?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 You mean, how have I handled that moment?\u00a0 It hasn\u2019t been church, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was giving you an out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 No, no, you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was giving you an out there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a softball, Dennis, because we have been there.\u00a0 Despite my girls growing up in a Christian home, knowing about modesty\u2014we\u2019ve chosen to be rather direct with them.\u00a0 So, I might look and say, \u201cYou know, Sweetheart, if I\u2019m in Sunday school class with you, I just want to tell you where my eyes are going to be during that time; okay?\u00a0 You\u2019re not trying to draw attention to your body that way, but I\u2019m just telling you that teenage guys are looking at you; and they\u2019re paying attention.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, just a few weeks ago, my daughter was out.\u00a0 We were together.\u00a0 We got home and I said, \u201cI don\u2019t think you should wear those shorts anymore.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cOh, I didn\u2019t think about it, Dad, but you are right.\u00a0 I was <em>aware <\/em>of myself as we started that hike\u2014that outdoor hike.\u00a0 I knew I probably should have worn something a little more modest.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we\u2019ve just chosen to be very upfront with them about how guys are wired and to assume they\u2019re not trying to be enticing; they are just following the pressures of the world and the dictates of the culture that says, \u201cMore skin is better.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t say, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to change.\u00a0 You can\u2019t go out looking that way.\u00a0 You look like some\u2014\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t say that.\u00a0 I try to reason with them and help them understand <em>why<\/em> they need to reconsider what they\u2019re doing there.\u00a0 Modesty is a tough one.\u00a0 I think every parent has to struggle with that at some point in time or another.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is no doubt about that.\u00a0 When the Apostle Paul greeted many of the churches that he wrote to, he would greet them with two words.\u00a0 Do you remember what they were?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Grace and peace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 Grace and peace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Grace and peace.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been thinking about you being Mr. Grace.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cMan, that\u2019s a <em>great <\/em>way to describe a parent.\u201d\u00a0 Again, if it\u2019s in proper balance with the truth and Christ lives in you\u2014\u201cand we beheld His glory,\u201d\u2014He has truth and grace as a part of who He is\u2014then, we <em>can<\/em> demonstrate that grace to our kids.\u00a0 This culture\u2014they need to know of God\u2019s grace.\u00a0 They need to know about forgiveness because they are not going to do it all 100 percent right.\u00a0 They are going to need to know God\u2019s forgiveness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is one last thing, though, that.\u00a0 We have a gentleman who is with us today, a friend, John Fuller, co-host of <em>Focus on the Family<\/em>.\u00a0 We\u2019re just thrilled to have you on the broadcast, John.\u00a0 It is good to have you on our home turf here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is <em>fun<\/em> to be here with you guys.\u00a0 I wish we had a couple of days to sit off mike and chat because I love and appreciate you both.\u00a0 You both have spoken into my life over the years in some pretty significant ways\u2014real honor to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 John has just finished a book called <em>First Time Dad<\/em>.\u00a0 He is the father to six.\u00a0 I just have to ask you, John, because I really wanted to know more about this relationship as I was reading your book, \u201cWhat do you remember most about your dad?\u00a0 What do you appreciate most about him?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have a good dad.\u00a0 Growing up, he worked hard, usually, six days a week (although that sixth day was often a half day).\u00a0 He pulled me into his work world.\u00a0 I have memories of going\u2014he was a manager at a paper mill.\u00a0 So, I\u2019d go with him and sit at his desk, kind of look around, see him interacting with people.\u00a0 He was dedicated to us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs a young kid, I think eight years old, I tried out for little league.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have the tools to make it.\u00a0 My dad noticed that there were other dads hurting for their kids, who didn\u2019t make little league.\u00a0 So, he and another guy started something called the Independent League in our little community for guys who weren\u2019t good enough for little league but wanted to play.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, they set up this league where\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love it! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014every kid was guaranteed\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014three innings of play.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s great.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 It turned out\u2014I think it is still going today.\u00a0 He was devoted to helping me in some areas where I needed to grow.\u00a0 So, a good dad, fun.\u00a0 We had a lot of laughs\u2014great sense of humor.\u00a0 I picked up on that.\u00a0 To this day, some of the richest times in my own family, are those moments where we\u2019re all together at the table laughing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m sure, when you became a first-time dad, instinctively you drew on some of what he had modeled for you.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking about my own experience of becoming a first-time dad and thinking\u2014I came in (we talked about this already this week)\u2014I came in pretty confidently thinking, \u201cYes.\u00a0 I can handle this.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got this down.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you pretty cocky?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I was not was all that purposeful or intentional.\u00a0 If I were sitting down with a guy who had just come to me and said, \u201cI\u2019m about to be a first-time dad, what one piece of advice would you give me?\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m curious how you would answer that question, too; but I\u2019d say to the guy, \u201cThink about what you\u2019d like your new son or daughter to be like at age 18 or 20.\u00a0 That\u2019s not going to happen just by accident, just naturally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIf you\u2019re not purposeful and intentional\u2014if you don\u2019t have some strategies in place as a dad to figure out how we get from here to there\u2014how we make sure that the child at 18 is thinking and feeling these ways\u2014then it probably won\u2019t happen.\u00a0 You need to have some intentionality and some strategy.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat, I don\u2019t think I had.\u00a0 I just thought, \u201cAs long as I\u2019m around, I\u2019m fun, and we have a good relationship\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And we have a Christian home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s going to be\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019ll all turn out okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014like osmosis.\u00a0 They are going to absorb it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If I were going back and starting again, I\u2019d have a little more of a business plan in mind for how the child is going to get from here to there.\u00a0 You know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How would you answer the question, John?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 You kind of stole my answer there, Bob.\u00a0 I would have something similar to that.\u00a0 I think I\u2019d capture it with the word perspective.\u00a0 As\u2014particularly, in this season of life\u2014we have three teenage girls.\u00a0 They give me a hard time because I often follow that little statement up with a, \u201cPray for me,\u201d because I have three teenage girls.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI need a man cave or something; but I often tell them, \u201cNo, no.\u00a0 I talk good about you.\u201d\u00a0 I really <em>do<\/em> love having those girls.\u00a0 They are <em>wonderful<\/em>, but if you don\u2019t have perspective and that new child\u2014when that two-year-old looks at you and says, \u201cNo\u201d\u2014if you don\u2019t have a perspective that, \u201cOh, this is going to be a long haul now,\u201d that first \u201cNo,\u201d is going to go on for 12, 15 years, or longer.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t have that perspective, it\u2019s going to be a really difficult slog.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI like what you said there about intentionality because we do need to have some strategies.\u00a0 I think a lot of guys just show up and think, \u201cThat\u2019s it.\u00a0 I just have to be there, occasionally.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think perspective, at least right now, is helping me particularly with the teen years because if you get lost on those little things and you\u2019re not looking down the road to the day, \u201cNow, they are leaving soon,\u201d you might make some mistakes.\u00a0 So, perspective; I like intentionality.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis, I think you captured the heart of what I wanted with this book, which was some friendly mentoring through a book that says, \u201cHere is how you navigate some of these years.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how you get ready for some of what\u2019s coming up.\u00a0 Here are some of the joys and challenges of being a dad.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you\u2019re done, John, when you\u2019re all the way at the end of being done as a parent, how do you want your kids to describe your intentionality that we\u2019re talking about here?\u00a0 You are a man of perspective.\u00a0 You\u2019re a student of the Bible.\u00a0 You interview\u2014help interview people, experts, on a daily radio program\u2014so, you\u2019re being mentored by\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 All the time it seems.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 All the time.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s like I\u2019d go home from work some days, and I can\u2019t believe that I get paid for this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob and I have just been <em>two hours<\/em> with someone who was teaching <em>me<\/em> how to teach the Christian life to people.\u00a0 Of course, we get to pass it on to our listeners.\u00a0 If you could fast forward all the way to the end, how do you want your children to have remembered you as a father?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think it would be one of my kids\u2014they\u2019ve already given the handle that I like.\u00a0 It\u2019s one of my three teenage daughters.\u00a0 We were\u2014I cannot remember the circumstances\u2014but she looked at me and said, \u201cOh, you\u2019re the \u2018Grace Guy.\u2019\u00a0 You\u2019re the \u2018Grace Guy.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just thought\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 The daughter saying this is a rather performance-oriented, rules-oriented kind of kid.\u00a0 For her to say that to me\u2014just was powerful.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cOh, I want to be the \u2018Grace Guy.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 I want to be the guy that represents God\u2019s grace to my kids.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to be the guy that spent all of my time forming the rules and making sure they adhered to every little one.\u00a0 I want to get past that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to look at the heart and to realize that, while you want adherence\u2014eventually, you\u2019ve got to loosen up.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to throw the kid the opportunity to make some choices, to make some mistakes.\u00a0 To demonstrate grace means we\u2019re going to overlook the offense, and we\u2019re going to just lavish love on you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, that doesn\u2019t mean there are no consequences; but I think for that child who said, \u201cYou\u2019re the \u2018Grace Guy,\u2019\u201d it is because I time and again would come to a point and say, \u201cYou know what you did was wrong, and there is a consequence; but you\u2019re totally forgiven.\u00a0 I love you.\u00a0 I always will.\u00a0 Now, let\u2019s forget it and move on.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat might be better described as mercy by some, but for this child who always wanted to hit the rules\u2014for the rest of the kids, too, I think they\u2019ve seen that there\u2019s a little more openness and a lot less concern on all the little rules.\u00a0 Those are important, but we\u2019re less concerned with that and much more concerned with, \u201cWho are <em>you<\/em>?\u00a0 Who are you <em>inside<\/em>?\u00a0 What\u2019s your walk with God <em>really<\/em> like?\u201d\u00a0 These little things, the externals, they\u2019ll come and go; but I want to see heart here.\u00a0 I want to see a character that reflects Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf I communicate that in a gracious way, I guess that would be how they\u2019ve caught that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think of First Corinthians 13, how you just described that kind of love that is written about by the Apostle Paul\u2014love that is long-suffering, that believes the best, hopes the best, endures all things.\u00a0 That is <em>so tough<\/em> in the heat of the moment.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou described me as a younger father when I was very rules-oriented and really caught up in wanting the children to fulfill the letter of the law.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re a Christian home; you\u2019ve got to behave a certain way.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Sometimes parents can wrap their own ego around it and go, \u201cOur kids are a reflection of us.\u00a0 Good grief!\u00a0 What are people going to think about us?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you\u2019re on a national radio program talking about focusing on the family.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I mean, that just adds another layer to it here; doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 I joke with friends that I have a ministry to help them feel better about their families when my kids do certain things.\u00a0 It\u2019s kind of like, \u201cYour kid isn\u2019t as bad as my kids.\u00a0 So, feel good about that; would you?\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 In a mentoring situation, what you\u2019re talking about here is so important\u2014is to take some of the conscientiousness and\u2014it\u2019s interesting.\u00a0 It\u2019s a delicate balance here.\u00a0 You <em>don\u2019t<\/em> want the dad to become so free, so without boundaries, that he says, \u201cThat\u2019s alright.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWhatever.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cAnything goes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are families where that happens.\u00a0 The mom is the one who is trying to tow the line with the rules.\u00a0 Of course, there is great tension in that family, in that marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 In your relationship with Dena, who is the rule maker?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 It depends.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 It depends on the age of the child and what the situation is.\u00a0 Dena\u2014if Dena were here, she would say, \u201cJohn is better with the teenagers.\u00a0 He\u2019s better when the kids are older.\u201d\u00a0 I think her sweet spot has been <em>training<\/em> those kids when they are younger.\u00a0 There is a natural problem that occurs when kids hit their teens, though, and that is mom\u2019s want to continue \u201cmommy-ing\u201d often.\u00a0 Dad is getting ready to say, \u201cYes.\u00a0 You are on your own, baby.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to be moving out here soon.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think I\u2019ve been able to demonstrate to the kids what grace is and help them in that age range a little bit better than I did when I was younger.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me pick up on something you said because I felt it, too.\u00a0 When the kids were younger, it often felt like that was Mary Ann\u2019s turf.\u00a0 She was more naturally inclined in that area.\u00a0 Still, as a dad, I recognized that I needed to press into that area and not just abandon and say, \u201cI\u2019ll wait to their teens, and then I\u2019ll engage.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it was the things like reading to them at night, at bedtime.\u00a0 It was the opportunities that I took to enter into their world, even though I didn\u2019t necessarily feel all that well-equipped.\u00a0 It felt a little awkward to me, and it felt like it was more Mary Ann\u2019s sweet spot.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA first-time dad can\u2019t just tune out for the first ten years of a child\u2019s life and then think, \u201cOkay, now I\u2019ll get involved;\u201d right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is <em>so well<\/em> said, Bob.\u00a0 I remember a co-worker who was (to use Dennis\u2019 words) a couple of laps in the race ahead of me.\u00a0 He looked at me one time and he said, \u201cYou know, kids are really just\u2014they\u2019re no good until you can talk to them at about nine or ten.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 This is a Christian dad with four kids.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m happy to say I disregarded that advice and found ways to get on the floor, roll around, and wrestle with my kids when they were younger\u2014to have fun at their level.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t come naturally.\u00a0 I get tired of playing Lego\u2019s\u00ae for two hours\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014when the little boy doesn\u2019t.\u00a0 I <em>really<\/em> don\u2019t like, Bob, sitting down having <em>tea parties <\/em>with my little girls at the little thing with the dolls or the animals.\u00a0 I mean, that\u2019s insufferable at times; but you\u2019re point is so well-made.\u00a0 We have to do that as guys, particularly, when they are younger.\u00a0 That is such a crucial time for us, as dads, to plug-in.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, yes, you\u2019re going to be feeling awkward a lot; but it is <em>absolutely<\/em> worth it.\u00a0 Eventually, you\u2019re going to like some of that.\u00a0 I mean, I miss the tea party days, okay?\u00a0 My girls don\u2019t invite me to do that anymore.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe touched on that last time\u2014the season is very short.\u00a0 So, when you have an opportunity\u2014and I had to do this, by the way, writing this book\u2014I had to say, \u201cThe book will wait.\u00a0 My kids want time with me.\u201d\u00a0 So, make the choice to be there for them and to do something with them from day one.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI used to rock Dakota to bed every night to sleep.\u00a0 I\u2019d sing <em>Amazing Grace<\/em> and some other songs.\u00a0 I <em>loved<\/em> those days.\u00a0 It was\u2014that was not intuitive for me, but I came to <em>love<\/em> those days.\u00a0 Well, he\u2019s 23 years old and doesn\u2019t call me and ask me to sing him to sleep anymore at night.\u00a0 Those are rich moments.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, as dads, we have to recognize that we have great power in those younger years, in particular.\u00a0 We have to show up and do fathering well.\u00a0 We have to do so because we\u2019re called to and because in a short time, those moments are gone.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just a little glimmer of hope for you here.\u00a0 The other night I got to rock and sing to my grandson.\u00a0 So, those\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s coming.\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014days are ahead.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s rich time; isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, there is a reason why Dakota doesn\u2019t ask you to rock him.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t he the one who is 6\u20198\u201d?\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, picture <em>that<\/em> in a rocking chair!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 It just wouldn\u2019t work.\u00a0 It would be very difficult.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just for a moment, I want you to tell us how you would apply\u2014you\u2019re \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMr. Grace, alright\u2014you\u2019re\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 By the way, that\u2019s just God\u2019s work in my life; okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I understand; I understand.\u00a0 I just want to hear\u2014I want to hear how it occurred practically in the area of teenage girls and modest dress.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, it would <em>never<\/em> happen in your household; but if one of your daughters came down ready for church, or came down ready for school, wearing something that she\u2019d worn her mother out at the mall about that\u2014she\u2019d been able to purchase and it wasn\u2019t the right thing\u2014it was immodest.\u00a0 How would Mr. Grace handle that moment?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 You mean, how have I handled that moment?\u00a0 It hasn\u2019t been church, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was giving you an out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 No, no, you\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was giving you an out there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a softball, Dennis, because we have been there.\u00a0 Despite my girls growing up in a Christian home, knowing about modesty\u2014we\u2019ve chosen to be rather direct with them.\u00a0 So, I might look and say, \u201cYou know, Sweetheart, if I\u2019m in Sunday school class with you, I just want to tell you where my eyes are going to be during that time; okay?\u00a0 You\u2019re not trying to draw attention to your body that way, but I\u2019m just telling you that teenage guys are looking at you; and they\u2019re paying attention.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, just a few weeks ago, my daughter was out.\u00a0 We were together.\u00a0 We got home and I said, \u201cI don\u2019t think you should wear those shorts anymore.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cOh, I didn\u2019t think about it, Dad, but you are right.\u00a0 I was <em>aware <\/em>of myself as we started that hike\u2014that outdoor hike.\u00a0 I knew I probably should have worn something a little more modest.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we\u2019ve just chosen to be very upfront with them about how guys are wired and to assume they\u2019re not trying to be enticing; they are just following the pressures of the world and the dictates of the culture that says, \u201cMore skin is better.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t say, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to change.\u00a0 You can\u2019t go out looking that way.\u00a0 You look like some\u2014\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t say that.\u00a0 I try to reason with them and help them understand <em>why<\/em> they need to reconsider what they\u2019re doing there.\u00a0 Modesty is a tough one.\u00a0 I think every parent has to struggle with that at some point in time or another.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is no doubt about that.\u00a0 When the Apostle Paul greeted many of the churches that he wrote to, he would greet them with two words.\u00a0 Do you remember what they were?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Grace and peace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John:<\/strong>\u00a0 Grace and peace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Grace and peace.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been thinking about you being Mr. Grace.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cMan, that\u2019s a <em>great <\/em>way to describe a parent.\u201d\u00a0 Again, if it\u2019s in proper balance with the truth and Christ lives in you\u2014\u201cand we beheld His glory,\u201d\u2014He has truth and grace as a part of who He is\u2014then, we <em>can<\/em> demonstrate that grace to our kids.\u00a0 This culture\u2014they need to know of God\u2019s grace.\u00a0 They need to know about forgiveness because they are not going to do it all 100 percent right.\u00a0 They are going to need to know God\u2019s forgiveness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is one last thing, though,
