but you want to do it, stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I am ready for what we are going to talk about today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 You are?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 I have come with as many objections as I can think of from parents about, \u201cWhy trying to do family devotions in our family just isn't going to work.\u201d\u00a0 And I am going to throw every one of them I have got\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Our program is only 24 minutes and 55 seconds, Bob.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 You think the list could go a little longer than that; huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 I think it could; but let\u2019s ask our guest, Marty Machowski, if he thinks that list is going to be long or short.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty<\/strong>:\u00a0 No, it\u2019s going to be a <em>long<\/em> list.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s what I was thinking.\u00a0 Marty has written a devotional\u2014there are ten-minute devotions to draw your family to God\u2014it is called Long Story Short.\u00a0 Marty is uniquely gifted to do this because he has forced his kids to do this with him and to pilot\u2014well, he actually wrote it, and tested it, and then took them back through it\u2014and I am sure those kids are having withdrawal at this point from his own devotional.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut he is a family pastor at Covenant Fellowship Church in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania.\u00a0 He and his wife Lois have six children, three of whom have graduated, moved on, and are at college.\u00a0 So you have taken your children through a lot of devotions over the years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 And you have also, in your role as a pastor, as you have advocated this with parents and gone up and said, \u201cSo how are things going with family devotions in your house?\u201d and you have seen the dads kind of go, \u201cWell.\u201d\u00a0 So are you ready for my objections?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 I am going to do my best because I probably had most of them myself, in my house.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 The first one that comes is, \u201cYou know, we have tried it for about a week; and we were just getting nowhere.\u00a0 The kids were fussy.\u00a0 They weren\u2019t paying any attention; and it was just\u2014it was so futile that I said, \u2018We will just wait another year until they are a little older, and then we will try again.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 I had that exact same experience myself.\u00a0 The problem that I found was\u2014I didn\u2019t know what to do.\u00a0 Much of the material that I was trying to use with my children was for adults.\u00a0 That\u2019s what\u2019s written out there\u2014vast majority of it is material for adults.\u00a0 Long Story Short came out of my odyssey of trying to figure out what I could use.\u00a0 So I would recommend that they give it a try and go another round.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 And the kids may squirm; and you still just keep going, even if they squirm?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Now there are some training opportunities where you want to correct your children, but you can\u2019t be correcting your children day in and day out for them just being kids.\u00a0 You have to recognize that that\u2019s going to happen.\u00a0 If you set yourself up before you go into devotions with a little pep talk, \u201cOkay, now, when I sit down, that\u2019s when all the commotion is going to start.\u00a0 When I open my mouth and start to talk, that\u2019s when everybody is going to look away; and they are going to pretend like they are not paying attention, even if they are.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you give yourself that pep talk when you go into devotions, and some of those things happen, you are going to be ready for it.\u00a0 Keep on speaking the transforming words that are found in the Bible to your kids, and it is going to have an effect.\u00a0 God\u2019s Word will not return void over time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 Well, we should probably keep in mind, too, that there is an opposing force who would like nothing better than this not to happen at your house.\u00a0 And so the Enemy is going to be throwing all kinds of things at you, like this one\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 No, no, I get the next one!\u00a0 This is not just you to present all the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 You have your list of objections?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 I have got some of them, too.\u00a0 Here\u2019s one that I think the Enemy tries to convince a parent, a father, a mother\u2014that, \u201cThey can\u2019t do it.\u00a0 They are not trained,\u201d and that, \u201cYou know what? It\u2019s the Sunday school teacher\u2019s responsibility.\u00a0 It\u2019s the youth pastor who should teach my kids about God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Well, the youth pastor, the Sunday school teacher, is going to teach them about God; but the amount of time they are going to be spending with your kids is just what\u2014an hour a week, at most?\u2014but you have them the other six days of the week, and the world is speaking into their lives all week long.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou really are qualified.\u00a0 You are not qualified because you have had some special theological training.\u00a0 You are qualified because God says you are qualified.\u00a0 God gives the responsibility to parents to train their children up in the way of the Lord.\u00a0 Now, if God said that, and He gave you the most powerful tool in the world, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, you don\u2019t need anything more.\u00a0 What we need to remember is that tool will transform the lives of our kids\u2014we can go another round.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou talked about the Enemy.\u00a0 There is one inside of us\u2014our own sinful flesh that wants to defeat us\u2014that\u2019s the one that really got me.\u00a0 The Bible says, \u201cThe spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.\u201d\u00a0 That is really true about family devotions and your motivation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0When I would go sit down to do family devotions\u2014in my mind\u2014I could come up with 100 reasons why this was not a good time for family devotions.\u00a0 \u201cWell, the kids were up too late last night.\u201d \u201cI was up too late last night,\u201d or, \u201cWe got to get through dinner quick if you are doing it around dinner time.\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019ll just give yourself a thousand excuses.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou need to remember those excuses aren\u2019t coming from the Spirit of God.\u00a0 They are coming from your flesh; and you need to keep in step with the Spirit who is saying, \u201cShare these most amazing truths with your children, and I will make sure that the Word of God you shared doesn\u2019t return void.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis: What I hear you saying is, \u201cParents are charged with this responsibility, and they need to press into it\u2014regardless\u2014they just need to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 But here was our situation.\u00a0 You know, we got the book; and we did it for a couple of weeks; and then, we went on vacation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 Is this another excuse?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 This is another excuse.\u00a0 \u201cWe went on vacation.\u00a0 We were gone for a week\u2014two weeks on vacation\u2014we got back and school started, and you know how it is when school started.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 Out of your routine.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 So we wound up going three weeks.\u00a0 We just got out of the habit, and it kind of died away.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Praise God for the three weeks!\u00a0 Give it another three.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be distracted simply because you went on vacation.\u00a0 Put the book somewhere where you are going to see it\u2014with your Bible\u2014so that every time at dinner, for instance, it\u2019s sitting right next to where you are sitting\u2014right next to your plate.\u00a0 It stares you in the face.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you just get five or six days under your belt, your kids are going to remind you.\u00a0 They will say, \u201cHey, Dad, what about family devotions?\u201d\u00a0 And you are thinking, \u201cWell, let\u2019s get dessert done; and let\u2019s get off because we got a thousand things to do.\u201d\u00a0 What\u2019s ten minutes more of time in your day?\u00a0 Nothing, really.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 But didn\u2019t you have teenagers through the years, who were\u2014when you would get out the book and go, \u201cIt\u2019s time for family devotions,\u201d they would go, \u201cI got a test tomorrow,\u201d or, \u201cI got this,\u201d or where they would start rolling their eyes, or going, \u201cDad, do we have to do this again?\u00a0 Can we do\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 That was my next one, Bob.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 \u201cThe kids aren't interested.\u201d\u00a0 You are getting pushed back.\u00a0 They are giving you the excuses, and they are playing the card, like you said, about homework.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 They are not saying, (Excitedly)\u201cDad, aren't we going to do family devotions?\u201d\u00a0 They are going, (Bemoaning) \u201cOh Dad, come on!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 (Exaggerated voice)\u00a0 They are saying, \u201cWhy do we have to do family devotions again?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 There you go.\u00a0 You have heard that.\u00a0 Your kids said that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Quote, unquote.\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Of course they are going to say that.\u00a0 You shouldn't be surprised that they are going to say that.\u00a0 As they go through their journey in life, they are caught up with the same worldly things that we are caught up with.\u00a0 They want to go to the next thing.\u00a0 They don\u2019t\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow many times do we miss our own personal devotions?\u00a0 Think about it.\u00a0 They are no different than us.\u00a0 They have got the same sinful motivations that we do.\u00a0 What we want to do, as parents, is to help them understand the importance.\u00a0 \u201cWell, kids, I know that you have got a lot going on in your day.\u00a0 I am just going to ask you for ten more minutes.\u00a0 I promise, ten more minutes.\u00a0 We are going to read a passage from God\u2019s Word, share a few thoughts.\u00a0 We are going to pray, and then we are going to let you go.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you just help them to understand, \u201cIt's only ten minutes,\u201d that\u2019s really reasonable.\u00a0 I have found that even teens, when you present them with, \u201cI am only going to keep you for ten minutes.\u00a0 We are going to get through quickly.\u201d\u00a0 They have got ten minutes they can give you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 Alright, what about the parent who says, \u201cI grew up in a non-Christian home.\u00a0 Religion wasn\u2019t anything that we were taught growing up, not even any kind of reading of the Bible.\u00a0 I have never seen it done.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what it looks like. I don\u2019t know how to do it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Well, I was a pastor; and I was saying some of the same things.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I mean, really, \u201cHow do you do family devotions?\u00a0 What comes first?\u00a0 What comes next?\u201d\u00a0 In Long Story Short, I wanted to take all the complications out for that person.\u00a0 I want the parent to know that, \u201cIf they just read through the Bible, then read through the devotion, they are going to be giving a great spiritual meal to their kids.\u201d\u00a0 I even give them questions to ask and follow up with the words to a prayer that they can pray.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 I got one.\u00a0 I want to hear how you deal with this one.\u00a0 \u201cIf I ask those questions, my kids are going to start asking me questions like my son said to me one time, \u2018So God loves everyone, right?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cRight.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cDoes He love Satan?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cAhhhh\u201d\u2014\u00a0\u00a0 So what do you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Well, it's okay to tell your kids, \u201cThat\u2019s a great question.\u00a0 I am going to have to find out.\u201d\u00a0 You can go to your pastor; you can go to someone who is more mature than you.\u00a0 You hope that your kids are going to start putting one and one together and start formulating their own questions.\u00a0 You know what that tells you?\u00a0 That tells you they are getting there.\u00a0 So, if your kids are asking you spiritual questions, you are a leg up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 But you are still not sure how to answer them, and then you do have to go and get some help.\u00a0 I mean, you have got to be committed to the fact that the spiritual training of your children is the most important thing you can be doing in their life; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 It's the most important thing, next to your own example.\u00a0 I think that the one thing that my kids benefited from early on is seeing me doing my personal devotions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I am an early riser.\u00a0 I would get up long before they would get up; but I would go to their room, and I would systematically go through my six kids and wake them up.\u00a0 I would say, \u201cCome on.\u00a0 You are going to come join Daddy for prayer.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor about ten minutes or less, maybe five when they were younger, I would just sit down with them; and we would pray.\u00a0 Then, after that short period of time, I would send them off to their beds and they would just go right back to sleep; but what they had learned through those years, even before I started using the devotional that became Long Story Short, was that Daddy prays\u2014and the same for my wife, \u201cMom prays.\u201d\u00a0 So, I agree with you; but your own example is actually a little bit more important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 Well, and in fact, if your own example is not synching up with what they are hearing about the Scriptures, and if they are not seeing you confess and repent as you need to do that, then that hypocrisy could harden their heart; couldn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 Well, it could.\u00a0 I think that kids are drawn to seek hypocrisy just very easily and, yet, we are all hypocrites. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 And I would say I, too\u2014I think there are some parents who may shy away from taking their children to the Scriptures because they know their children are watching them live in some of this hypocrisy, and they may have to deal with some of their stuff.\u00a0 They may\u2014just like you did\u2014you had to confess to your kids, \u201cYou know, I have gone through a season here of anger, and it's not right.\u201d\u00a0 Yet, here is the thing\u2014those lessons of a parent humbling himself or herself on behalf of God\u2014and what God\u2019s doing in his or her life\u2014may be one of the most powerful devotions they could ever share with their children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 In the midst of you going through the Bible with your children, when God begins to touch your heart\u2014convict you of a sin; point something amazing out\u2014don\u2019t be limited to what you are reading in the devotional book.\u00a0 Tell them what you are feeling.\u00a0 Tell them what you are experiencing and your kids will begin to see that God is working in Mom and Dad.\u00a0 That makes God real to them; and there is no greater treasure that you can give them, along with the message, than being effected by that same message yourself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 \u00a0Okay.\u00a0 What about the mom or the dad who would say, \u201cYou know, we don\u2019t have ten minutes together as a family.\u00a0 I have got a teenager who has a part-time job in the evening.\u00a0 I have got other kids who are involved in other stuff.\u00a0 We don\u2019t do breakfast; we don\u2019t do dinner most nights together.\u00a0 We are kind of running here and there, and to get everybody together ten minutes\u2014we just don\u2019t have ten minutes.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 If I came into your house with two quarts of ice cream and whipped cream in bowls, you would have ten minutes.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 You would see how fast all of the important things that the kids are doing, everywhere and anyway\u2014they would all disappear and everybody would be there to have their ice cream.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reality is\u2014we tell ourselves, \u201cWe don\u2019t have time,\u201d but we have all kinds of time.\u00a0 Even in a family\u2014and I have teens\u2014four different teens who are going in different directions for different jobs\u2014there are still times when we are all together.\u00a0 Now, with six kids, I can\u2019t always have six at the table, or six in the morning, to do family devotions; and that\u2019s okay.\u00a0 One has an odd schedule\u2014can\u2019t make it\u2014I don\u2019t have to stop for the rest of the family.\u00a0 I can keep on going; but the reality is, most of the time, at some point in the day, everybody is at home.\u00a0 You just need to take that opportunity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 Here is another parent who goes, \u201cI got them at home, and I got them around the table.\u00a0 I started opening the Bible, I started attempting devos; and man, I am boring them to death. I mean, they are flipping peas into the air, they are kicking each other, sliding down underneath the table.\u00a0 I mean, I am just boring them to death with the Bible.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 \u201cImagine a grizzly bear breaks into your house, rips open your refrigerator and pulls out a bowl of leftover spaghetti, and tracks it all across your house.\u00a0 By the time you get home, the damage is done.\u00a0 There is spaghetti everywhere.\u00a0 In today\u2019s devotion, we are going to learn about how sin ruins our whole life.\u00a0 It's just like that grizzly bear, raiding the refrigerator and getting spaghetti everywhere.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThose are the kinds of stories and little illustrations we have put into Long Story Short that capture the attention of the young people and get them to look straight in your eyes because they want to hear, \u201cWhat\u2019s coming next?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 You actually have one of these stories or object lessons at the beginning of each of the 78 weeks.\u00a0 I have got one here that talks about hiding five nickels and a quarter, another one where you have every kid\u2014I thought this was interesting because this could start some fights here.\u00a0 A pile of candy in front of each child, except in front of one\u2014it\u2019s double.\u00a0 That kid\u2019s pile of candy is twice as much as the others.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 He gets a double portion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 And that\u2019s talking about Elijah and Elisha.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Yes, he wanted a double portion of Elijah\u2019s spirit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 Another one\u2014you actually pass out grass\u2014that you are careful in the book to instruct parents to wash carefully so if there is any fertilizer or chemicals on it\u2014I really appreciate you being green here, Marty.\u00a0 That\u2019s very good, but you actually pass out the grass to the kids and let them eat it.\u00a0 That, of course, illustrates\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0\u00a0 Is that King Darius?\u00a0 Is that what that is all\u2014Was it Nebuchadnezzar?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0Dennis:\u00a0 Nebuchadnezzar, that\u2019s right.\u00a0 How Nebuchadnezzar went down and ate the same grass that the cattle were eating.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 Okay, so I can see where you have really made an attempt to make these engaging, and fun, and active; but I am also imagining the parent who is saying, \u201cWe have got four kids at home.\u00a0 They range from two to ten.\u00a0 How do I do family devotions where the ten-year-old is not bored and two-year-old is following along?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 That\u2019s a great question.\u00a0 We had that situation in our house; and what I realized was, \u201cI can't cater my devotions to the two-year-old because I am going to bore everybody else stiff; and at same time, I can't neglect the two-year-old.\u00a0 So what do I do?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI get the older kids involved.\u00a0 I ask them, \u201cLook, when I ask Mary a question, she is not going to know the answer.\u00a0 So here is what I want you to do.\u00a0 You sit down next to Mary, and you whisper the answer in her ear.\u00a0 She is going to be so excited that she knows the answer to the Bible story.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what happens, and the older kids feel like they are a part\u2014they are helping their younger siblings out.\u00a0 The younger siblings get the answers right, and the repetition of rehearsing that right answer is really what\u2019s cemented into their minds.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 Have I missed any of the really big ones that you have gotten over the years\u2014anything you can think of that they have thrown at you\u2014that I haven't touched on here or that Dennis has missed?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 \u201cWhat if a kid just plain refuses to come?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s a good one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 That was the one that happened to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 One of your children said, \u201cI am not doing devotions\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 Now, wait one second.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 You are a pastor, pastor of family life at Covenant Fellowship Church!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 And my kids are saying, \u201cNo, Dad, I am not doing it today.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 How old where they\u2014two, three?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Oh, no.\u00a0 They are in teen years\u2014they are 13, \u201cI have done enough of this.\u00a0 I am done for now.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to do this anymore.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 I am taking a vacation from devos.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Taking vacation from devos.\u00a0 What would you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, it provides an opportunity to not battle in the moment.\u00a0 \u201cAlright, that\u2019s fine.\u00a0 We are going to continue on upstairs without you.\u00a0 Maybe we can talk about, you know, what you are struggling with,\u201d and then going back to that child and talking through and having the opportunity to encourage them with how important spending time in God\u2019s Word is\u2014even doing family devotions\u2014where, in some cases, we might be talking to the younger kids.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cOne day you are going to be a dad.\u00a0 One day you are going to want to be teaching your children.\u00a0 Family devotions is not simply about learning the Bible, but it\u2019s also watching Dad to learn how to teach the Bible\u2014how to do this.\u00a0 I would just encourage you to think that you might be able to pick up a few things so that when you are a dad, you are going to be able to do just what I did, not because it was my devotional, but because we opened the Bible together as a family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 The family was God\u2019s first discipleship unit.\u00a0 He starts the Bible with it\u2014a husband and a wife were meant to multiply a godly legacy.\u00a0 It's our assignment.\u00a0 God gives us children.\u00a0 He blesses us with them.\u00a0 We are not merely to just have children that take up a place on the planet; but we are to, hopefully, imprint them with the truth from God\u2019s Word, introduce them to Jesus Christ, and give them the opportunity to respond to Him.\u00a0 This is one of the greatest privileges parents have, which is to introduce their children to God, and to Jesus Christ, and His saving grace.\u00a0 I just encourage parents, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 Step past all of Bob\u2019s obstacles that he had here\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 Hey, wait!\u00a0 You had a few of them yourself\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 I had a few, but you won.\u00a0 You had more than I did!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut to, \u201cStep past it, face their fears, and just do it!\u00a0 And you know what?\u00a0 It is better to hit three days out of seven than zero out of seven, week, after week, after week, after\u2014try it\u2014even if you fail and only hit it a couple of times a week.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 That\u2019s better than not doing it at all.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just appreciate your emphasis here, Marty.\u00a0 I appreciate you making it a whole lot easier on us as parents, and I think a lot of families are going to benefit from Long Story Short.\u00a0 And what\u2014you got another one coming?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 We do\u2014Old Story New\u2014and we, also, for toddlers, have but you want to do it, stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I am ready for what we are going to talk about today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 You are?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 I have come with as many objections as I can think of from parents about, \u201cWhy trying to do family devotions in our family just isn't going to work.\u201d\u00a0 And I am going to throw every one of them I have got\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Our program is only 24 minutes and 55 seconds, Bob.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 You think the list could go a little longer than that; huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 I think it could; but let\u2019s ask our guest, Marty Machowski, if he thinks that list is going to be long or short.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty<\/strong>:\u00a0 No, it\u2019s going to be a <em>long<\/em> list.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s what I was thinking.\u00a0 Marty has written a devotional\u2014there are ten-minute devotions to draw your family to God\u2014it is called Long Story Short.\u00a0 Marty is uniquely gifted to do this because he has forced his kids to do this with him and to pilot\u2014well, he actually wrote it, and tested it, and then took them back through it\u2014and I am sure those kids are having withdrawal at this point from his own devotional.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut he is a family pastor at Covenant Fellowship Church in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania.\u00a0 He and his wife Lois have six children, three of whom have graduated, moved on, and are at college.\u00a0 So you have taken your children through a lot of devotions over the years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 And you have also, in your role as a pastor, as you have advocated this with parents and gone up and said, \u201cSo how are things going with family devotions in your house?\u201d and you have seen the dads kind of go, \u201cWell.\u201d\u00a0 So are you ready for my objections?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 I am going to do my best because I probably had most of them myself, in my house.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 The first one that comes is, \u201cYou know, we have tried it for about a week; and we were just getting nowhere.\u00a0 The kids were fussy.\u00a0 They weren\u2019t paying any attention; and it was just\u2014it was so futile that I said, \u2018We will just wait another year until they are a little older, and then we will try again.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 I had that exact same experience myself.\u00a0 The problem that I found was\u2014I didn\u2019t know what to do.\u00a0 Much of the material that I was trying to use with my children was for adults.\u00a0 That\u2019s what\u2019s written out there\u2014vast majority of it is material for adults.\u00a0 Long Story Short came out of my odyssey of trying to figure out what I could use.\u00a0 So I would recommend that they give it a try and go another round.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 And the kids may squirm; and you still just keep going, even if they squirm?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Now there are some training opportunities where you want to correct your children, but you can\u2019t be correcting your children day in and day out for them just being kids.\u00a0 You have to recognize that that\u2019s going to happen.\u00a0 If you set yourself up before you go into devotions with a little pep talk, \u201cOkay, now, when I sit down, that\u2019s when all the commotion is going to start.\u00a0 When I open my mouth and start to talk, that\u2019s when everybody is going to look away; and they are going to pretend like they are not paying attention, even if they are.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you give yourself that pep talk when you go into devotions, and some of those things happen, you are going to be ready for it.\u00a0 Keep on speaking the transforming words that are found in the Bible to your kids, and it is going to have an effect.\u00a0 God\u2019s Word will not return void over time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 Well, we should probably keep in mind, too, that there is an opposing force who would like nothing better than this not to happen at your house.\u00a0 And so the Enemy is going to be throwing all kinds of things at you, like this one\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 No, no, I get the next one!\u00a0 This is not just you to present all the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 You have your list of objections?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 I have got some of them, too.\u00a0 Here\u2019s one that I think the Enemy tries to convince a parent, a father, a mother\u2014that, \u201cThey can\u2019t do it.\u00a0 They are not trained,\u201d and that, \u201cYou know what? It\u2019s the Sunday school teacher\u2019s responsibility.\u00a0 It\u2019s the youth pastor who should teach my kids about God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Well, the youth pastor, the Sunday school teacher, is going to teach them about God; but the amount of time they are going to be spending with your kids is just what\u2014an hour a week, at most?\u2014but you have them the other six days of the week, and the world is speaking into their lives all week long.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou really are qualified.\u00a0 You are not qualified because you have had some special theological training.\u00a0 You are qualified because God says you are qualified.\u00a0 God gives the responsibility to parents to train their children up in the way of the Lord.\u00a0 Now, if God said that, and He gave you the most powerful tool in the world, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, you don\u2019t need anything more.\u00a0 What we need to remember is that tool will transform the lives of our kids\u2014we can go another round.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou talked about the Enemy.\u00a0 There is one inside of us\u2014our own sinful flesh that wants to defeat us\u2014that\u2019s the one that really got me.\u00a0 The Bible says, \u201cThe spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.\u201d\u00a0 That is really true about family devotions and your motivation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0When I would go sit down to do family devotions\u2014in my mind\u2014I could come up with 100 reasons why this was not a good time for family devotions.\u00a0 \u201cWell, the kids were up too late last night.\u201d \u201cI was up too late last night,\u201d or, \u201cWe got to get through dinner quick if you are doing it around dinner time.\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019ll just give yourself a thousand excuses.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou need to remember those excuses aren\u2019t coming from the Spirit of God.\u00a0 They are coming from your flesh; and you need to keep in step with the Spirit who is saying, \u201cShare these most amazing truths with your children, and I will make sure that the Word of God you shared doesn\u2019t return void.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis: What I hear you saying is, \u201cParents are charged with this responsibility, and they need to press into it\u2014regardless\u2014they just need to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 But here was our situation.\u00a0 You know, we got the book; and we did it for a couple of weeks; and then, we went on vacation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 Is this another excuse?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 This is another excuse.\u00a0 \u201cWe went on vacation.\u00a0 We were gone for a week\u2014two weeks on vacation\u2014we got back and school started, and you know how it is when school started.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 Out of your routine.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 So we wound up going three weeks.\u00a0 We just got out of the habit, and it kind of died away.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Praise God for the three weeks!\u00a0 Give it another three.\u00a0 Don\u2019t be distracted simply because you went on vacation.\u00a0 Put the book somewhere where you are going to see it\u2014with your Bible\u2014so that every time at dinner, for instance, it\u2019s sitting right next to where you are sitting\u2014right next to your plate.\u00a0 It stares you in the face.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you just get five or six days under your belt, your kids are going to remind you.\u00a0 They will say, \u201cHey, Dad, what about family devotions?\u201d\u00a0 And you are thinking, \u201cWell, let\u2019s get dessert done; and let\u2019s get off because we got a thousand things to do.\u201d\u00a0 What\u2019s ten minutes more of time in your day?\u00a0 Nothing, really.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 But didn\u2019t you have teenagers through the years, who were\u2014when you would get out the book and go, \u201cIt\u2019s time for family devotions,\u201d they would go, \u201cI got a test tomorrow,\u201d or, \u201cI got this,\u201d or where they would start rolling their eyes, or going, \u201cDad, do we have to do this again?\u00a0 Can we do\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 That was my next one, Bob.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 \u201cThe kids aren't interested.\u201d\u00a0 You are getting pushed back.\u00a0 They are giving you the excuses, and they are playing the card, like you said, about homework.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 They are not saying, (Excitedly)\u201cDad, aren't we going to do family devotions?\u201d\u00a0 They are going, (Bemoaning) \u201cOh Dad, come on!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 (Exaggerated voice)\u00a0 They are saying, \u201cWhy do we have to do family devotions again?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 There you go.\u00a0 You have heard that.\u00a0 Your kids said that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Quote, unquote.\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Of course they are going to say that.\u00a0 You shouldn't be surprised that they are going to say that.\u00a0 As they go through their journey in life, they are caught up with the same worldly things that we are caught up with.\u00a0 They want to go to the next thing.\u00a0 They don\u2019t\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow many times do we miss our own personal devotions?\u00a0 Think about it.\u00a0 They are no different than us.\u00a0 They have got the same sinful motivations that we do.\u00a0 What we want to do, as parents, is to help them understand the importance.\u00a0 \u201cWell, kids, I know that you have got a lot going on in your day.\u00a0 I am just going to ask you for ten more minutes.\u00a0 I promise, ten more minutes.\u00a0 We are going to read a passage from God\u2019s Word, share a few thoughts.\u00a0 We are going to pray, and then we are going to let you go.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you just help them to understand, \u201cIt's only ten minutes,\u201d that\u2019s really reasonable.\u00a0 I have found that even teens, when you present them with, \u201cI am only going to keep you for ten minutes.\u00a0 We are going to get through quickly.\u201d\u00a0 They have got ten minutes they can give you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 Alright, what about the parent who says, \u201cI grew up in a non-Christian home.\u00a0 Religion wasn\u2019t anything that we were taught growing up, not even any kind of reading of the Bible.\u00a0 I have never seen it done.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what it looks like. I don\u2019t know how to do it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Well, I was a pastor; and I was saying some of the same things.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I mean, really, \u201cHow do you do family devotions?\u00a0 What comes first?\u00a0 What comes next?\u201d\u00a0 In Long Story Short, I wanted to take all the complications out for that person.\u00a0 I want the parent to know that, \u201cIf they just read through the Bible, then read through the devotion, they are going to be giving a great spiritual meal to their kids.\u201d\u00a0 I even give them questions to ask and follow up with the words to a prayer that they can pray.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 I got one.\u00a0 I want to hear how you deal with this one.\u00a0 \u201cIf I ask those questions, my kids are going to start asking me questions like my son said to me one time, \u2018So God loves everyone, right?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cRight.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cDoes He love Satan?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cAhhhh\u201d\u2014\u00a0\u00a0 So what do you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Well, it's okay to tell your kids, \u201cThat\u2019s a great question.\u00a0 I am going to have to find out.\u201d\u00a0 You can go to your pastor; you can go to someone who is more mature than you.\u00a0 You hope that your kids are going to start putting one and one together and start formulating their own questions.\u00a0 You know what that tells you?\u00a0 That tells you they are getting there.\u00a0 So, if your kids are asking you spiritual questions, you are a leg up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 But you are still not sure how to answer them, and then you do have to go and get some help.\u00a0 I mean, you have got to be committed to the fact that the spiritual training of your children is the most important thing you can be doing in their life; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 It's the most important thing, next to your own example.\u00a0 I think that the one thing that my kids benefited from early on is seeing me doing my personal devotions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I am an early riser.\u00a0 I would get up long before they would get up; but I would go to their room, and I would systematically go through my six kids and wake them up.\u00a0 I would say, \u201cCome on.\u00a0 You are going to come join Daddy for prayer.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor about ten minutes or less, maybe five when they were younger, I would just sit down with them; and we would pray.\u00a0 Then, after that short period of time, I would send them off to their beds and they would just go right back to sleep; but what they had learned through those years, even before I started using the devotional that became Long Story Short, was that Daddy prays\u2014and the same for my wife, \u201cMom prays.\u201d\u00a0 So, I agree with you; but your own example is actually a little bit more important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 Well, and in fact, if your own example is not synching up with what they are hearing about the Scriptures, and if they are not seeing you confess and repent as you need to do that, then that hypocrisy could harden their heart; couldn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 Well, it could.\u00a0 I think that kids are drawn to seek hypocrisy just very easily and, yet, we are all hypocrites. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 And I would say I, too\u2014I think there are some parents who may shy away from taking their children to the Scriptures because they know their children are watching them live in some of this hypocrisy, and they may have to deal with some of their stuff.\u00a0 They may\u2014just like you did\u2014you had to confess to your kids, \u201cYou know, I have gone through a season here of anger, and it's not right.\u201d\u00a0 Yet, here is the thing\u2014those lessons of a parent humbling himself or herself on behalf of God\u2014and what God\u2019s doing in his or her life\u2014may be one of the most powerful devotions they could ever share with their children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 In the midst of you going through the Bible with your children, when God begins to touch your heart\u2014convict you of a sin; point something amazing out\u2014don\u2019t be limited to what you are reading in the devotional book.\u00a0 Tell them what you are feeling.\u00a0 Tell them what you are experiencing and your kids will begin to see that God is working in Mom and Dad.\u00a0 That makes God real to them; and there is no greater treasure that you can give them, along with the message, than being effected by that same message yourself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 \u00a0Okay.\u00a0 What about the mom or the dad who would say, \u201cYou know, we don\u2019t have ten minutes together as a family.\u00a0 I have got a teenager who has a part-time job in the evening.\u00a0 I have got other kids who are involved in other stuff.\u00a0 We don\u2019t do breakfast; we don\u2019t do dinner most nights together.\u00a0 We are kind of running here and there, and to get everybody together ten minutes\u2014we just don\u2019t have ten minutes.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 If I came into your house with two quarts of ice cream and whipped cream in bowls, you would have ten minutes.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 You would see how fast all of the important things that the kids are doing, everywhere and anyway\u2014they would all disappear and everybody would be there to have their ice cream.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reality is\u2014we tell ourselves, \u201cWe don\u2019t have time,\u201d but we have all kinds of time.\u00a0 Even in a family\u2014and I have teens\u2014four different teens who are going in different directions for different jobs\u2014there are still times when we are all together.\u00a0 Now, with six kids, I can\u2019t always have six at the table, or six in the morning, to do family devotions; and that\u2019s okay.\u00a0 One has an odd schedule\u2014can\u2019t make it\u2014I don\u2019t have to stop for the rest of the family.\u00a0 I can keep on going; but the reality is, most of the time, at some point in the day, everybody is at home.\u00a0 You just need to take that opportunity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 Here is another parent who goes, \u201cI got them at home, and I got them around the table.\u00a0 I started opening the Bible, I started attempting devos; and man, I am boring them to death. I mean, they are flipping peas into the air, they are kicking each other, sliding down underneath the table.\u00a0 I mean, I am just boring them to death with the Bible.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 \u201cImagine a grizzly bear breaks into your house, rips open your refrigerator and pulls out a bowl of leftover spaghetti, and tracks it all across your house.\u00a0 By the time you get home, the damage is done.\u00a0 There is spaghetti everywhere.\u00a0 In today\u2019s devotion, we are going to learn about how sin ruins our whole life.\u00a0 It's just like that grizzly bear, raiding the refrigerator and getting spaghetti everywhere.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThose are the kinds of stories and little illustrations we have put into Long Story Short that capture the attention of the young people and get them to look straight in your eyes because they want to hear, \u201cWhat\u2019s coming next?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 You actually have one of these stories or object lessons at the beginning of each of the 78 weeks.\u00a0 I have got one here that talks about hiding five nickels and a quarter, another one where you have every kid\u2014I thought this was interesting because this could start some fights here.\u00a0 A pile of candy in front of each child, except in front of one\u2014it\u2019s double.\u00a0 That kid\u2019s pile of candy is twice as much as the others.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 He gets a double portion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 And that\u2019s talking about Elijah and Elisha.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Yes, he wanted a double portion of Elijah\u2019s spirit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 Another one\u2014you actually pass out grass\u2014that you are careful in the book to instruct parents to wash carefully so if there is any fertilizer or chemicals on it\u2014I really appreciate you being green here, Marty.\u00a0 That\u2019s very good, but you actually pass out the grass to the kids and let them eat it.\u00a0 That, of course, illustrates\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0\u00a0 Is that King Darius?\u00a0 Is that what that is all\u2014Was it Nebuchadnezzar?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0Dennis:\u00a0 Nebuchadnezzar, that\u2019s right.\u00a0 How Nebuchadnezzar went down and ate the same grass that the cattle were eating.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 Okay, so I can see where you have really made an attempt to make these engaging, and fun, and active; but I am also imagining the parent who is saying, \u201cWe have got four kids at home.\u00a0 They range from two to ten.\u00a0 How do I do family devotions where the ten-year-old is not bored and two-year-old is following along?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 That\u2019s a great question.\u00a0 We had that situation in our house; and what I realized was, \u201cI can't cater my devotions to the two-year-old because I am going to bore everybody else stiff; and at same time, I can't neglect the two-year-old.\u00a0 So what do I do?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI get the older kids involved.\u00a0 I ask them, \u201cLook, when I ask Mary a question, she is not going to know the answer.\u00a0 So here is what I want you to do.\u00a0 You sit down next to Mary, and you whisper the answer in her ear.\u00a0 She is going to be so excited that she knows the answer to the Bible story.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what happens, and the older kids feel like they are a part\u2014they are helping their younger siblings out.\u00a0 The younger siblings get the answers right, and the repetition of rehearsing that right answer is really what\u2019s cemented into their minds.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 Have I missed any of the really big ones that you have gotten over the years\u2014anything you can think of that they have thrown at you\u2014that I haven't touched on here or that Dennis has missed?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 \u201cWhat if a kid just plain refuses to come?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s a good one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 That was the one that happened to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 One of your children said, \u201cI am not doing devotions\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 Now, wait one second.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 You are a pastor, pastor of family life at Covenant Fellowship Church!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 And my kids are saying, \u201cNo, Dad, I am not doing it today.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob:\u00a0 How old where they\u2014two, three?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Oh, no.\u00a0 They are in teen years\u2014they are 13, \u201cI have done enough of this.\u00a0 I am done for now.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to do this anymore.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 I am taking a vacation from devos.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMarty:\u00a0 Taking vacation from devos.\u00a0 What would you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, it provides an opportunity to not battle in the moment.\u00a0 \u201cAlright, that\u2019s fine.\u00a0 We are going to continue on upstairs without you.\u00a0 Maybe we can talk about, you know, what you are struggling with,\u201d and then going back to that child and talking through and having the opportunity to encourage them with how important spending time in God\u2019s Word is\u2014even doing family devotions\u2014where, in some cases, we might be talking to the younger kids.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cOne day you are going to be a dad.\u00a0 One day you are going to want to be teaching your children.\u00a0 Family devotions is not simply about learning the Bible, but it\u2019s also watching Dad to learn how to teach the Bible\u2014how to do this.\u00a0 I would just encourage you to think that you might be able to pick up a few things so that when you are a dad, you are going to be able to do just what I did, not because it was my devotional, but because we opened the Bible together as a family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis:\u00a0 The family was God\u2019s first discipleship unit.\u00a0 He starts the Bible with it\u2014a husband and a wife were meant to multiply a godly legacy.\u00a0 It's our assignment.\u00a0 God gives us children.\u00a0 He blesses us with them.\u00a0 We are not merely to just have children that take up a place on the planet;
