but over time, it wears the rough spots smooth.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I think God\u2019s Word does; and then the Holy Spirit\u2019s power\u2014quickening that Word to their hearts at some point in time\u2014there\u2019s that transformation of bringing the dead to life and watching our children become Christians\u2014and knowing that it didn\u2019t have anything to do with us, but with the powerful message that we presented to them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday, October 27<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife\u00ae, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk today about a great new way that you can impress the truth of God\u2019s Word on the hearts of your children.\u00a0 Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 Well, this came about\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014maybe 30 years too late.\u00a0 You know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was thinking that same thing, Bob.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I was thinking, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have <em>anything<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 I think this book that our guest on today\u2019s broadcast has written\u2014this may win the poundage award.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is 400 pages long, and I could have used this.\u00a0 Where were you?\u00a0 Where were you back when I had my kids, huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, let me introduce him.\u00a0 Marty Machowski joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\u00a0 Marty, welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you, Dennis.\u00a0 It\u2019s wonderful to be here today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Marty is a pastor at Covenant Fellowship Church in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania.\u00a0 What part of the state is that in?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just outside of Philadelphia, a western suburb.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019re passing out good tips on where to get a Philly cheesesteak if any of our listeners\u2014do you want to tell them where to go?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would go to Geno\u2019s.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob goes there, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I go to Geno\u2019s and Pat\u2019s\u2014usually in the same trip, okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a good trip.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is a good trip.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Get one; go across the street and get another.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Marty likes those Philly cheesesteaks.\u00a0 He also likes children.\u00a0 He and his wife Lois have six of them, and he has written a\u2014I don\u2019t want to call this a book.\u00a0 It\u2019s a devotional for families\u2014ten-minute devotionals for families called <em>Long Story Short<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want you to tell us\u2014do you remember your <em>first<\/em> effort, Marty, at a devotional with your family because Bob and I have painful memories of us trying to lead our families in these things.\u00a0 We had so much idealism of what it was going to look like.\u00a0 Do you remember how you first tried it?\u00a0 What happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I do; and it was a really sorry thing.\u00a0 I thought that a devotion had to be magnificent\u2014it had to declare some fantastic biblical truth.\u00a0 I remember sitting down with my children\u2014I think that the oldest twins, Emma and Nathan, were probably about five when I thought, \u201cYou know, they\u2019re about ready for devotions.\u00a0 Martha is three, and we can do this.\u201d\u00a0 I prepared an outline.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You didn\u2019t get out your Grudem\u2019s <em>Systematic Theology<\/em> and start to work on that, did you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 I didn\u2019t; but as a pastor, you have to have an outline.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That was your <em>first <\/em>mistake, having an outline.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was terrible.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t even get their attention.\u00a0 \u201cKids, it\u2019s time for devotions,\u201d and they\u2019re off in\u2014I ended up getting angry; and I thought, \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s supposed to <em>end <\/em>this way.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So the devotional was, \u201cDon\u2019t let the sun go down on your anger.\u201d\u00a0 Was that the devotional for the day?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was the practical application the Holy Spirit gave me.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I don\u2019t remember what the devotion was; but I remember thinking, \u201cI don\u2019t know what to do.\u201d\u00a0 As a pastor, I thought, \u201cI know the Bible, but I don\u2019t know how to do this with my family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And there are <em>millions<\/em> of dads listening saying, \u201cI don\u2019t know what to do either; and not only do I not know what to do, but the things I\u2019ve tried\u2014I do know what <em>not<\/em> to do because the things I have tried have not worked.\u00a0 So I\u2019ve given up and figured, \u2018I just hope it works out.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re coming along saying, \u201cDon\u2019t give up.\u00a0 There\u2019s a way to make this work.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 It is <em>not <\/em>complicated.\u00a0 That\u2019s the first problem.\u00a0 You think that this has to be <em>profound\u2014<\/em>it has to be <em>amazing<\/em>.\u00a0 What I realized is, \u201cNo, it\u2019s actually better to just be consistent.\u201d\u00a0 The simple truth of the Gospel, spoken to your children day by day, in short ten-minute segments, will transform their lives, not because you\u2019re amazing but because the message and the God behind it is amazing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want you to take us into your devotional, <em>Long Story Short,<\/em> and explain how you put this together because you didn\u2019t just design it for a day.\u00a0 You actually designed it for parents to unpack over a period of a week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\u00a0 I figured there are seven days in a week.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to go to church on Sunday\u2014that leaves six.\u00a0 Right from the start, I thought, \u201cI\u2019m not going to do six devotions per week because, as a dad, I\u2019m going to mess up and miss one.\u201d\u00a0 So I thought, \u201cLet\u2019s do five.\u201d\u00a0 Right from the start, you get a free day.\u00a0 You don\u2019t have to do devotions every day; I give you five for the week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey are only ten minutes long.\u00a0 You read a Scripture.\u00a0 I give you a paragraph that you can share with your family, simply reading what I wrote.\u00a0 Then, I give you discussion questions that you can go back and ask your kids.\u00a0 And in the end, there\u2019s a prayer. I even tell you what to pray.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe amazing thing about this devotion is not what <em>I <\/em>wrote; but I am mining the treasure of God\u2019s Word so that what you\u2019re giving your children is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, even through these Old Testament stories every single week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So a Scripture, a little commentary on it, some questions, and then a prayer; and that\u2019s the ten minutes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s the ten minutes, and every week we give you a bonus activity you can do to draw your children\u2019s interest.\u00a0 For instance, when you\u2019re going to do the week about Noah and the flood, I say, \u201cBring an umbrella and open it up at your devotions,\u201d and watch the kids think you\u2019re crazy as you tell them, \u201cIt\u2019s going to rain.\u201d\u00a0 When you\u2019ve played that out for a little bit, you say, \u201cYou think I\u2019m crazy. What do you think the people in Noah\u2019s day would have thought when he began to build a boat where there was no water\u2014period?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Mm hmm.\u00a0 How did you get from your first attempt that you said was a disaster to the point where you had something that you could replicate day in and day out that was working or connecting with the kids?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 The process that you talk about is the process that generated this book.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t set out to write a book.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t think, \u201cOh, you know what?\u00a0 Dads need a devotional book that will help them teach their kids.\u201d\u00a0 What I thought is, \u201cI need something for <em>my <\/em>family.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were working through a program we had written, a children\u2019s ministry Sunday school program.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWouldn\u2019t it be wonderful to be able to follow up on that program at home?\u201d\u00a0 So I started out by taking some of the lessons we were using on Sunday\u2014it followed through the Bible from Genesis through Revelation.\u00a0 <em>Long Story Short<\/em> is the Old Testament half of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI started saying, \u201cAlright.\u00a0 Let\u2019s try this with my kids.\u00a0 Wow, if I just read a Scripture and I follow along in the Bible chronology, I\u2019ll eventually hit the whole Bible, hitting the major stories.\u201d\u00a0 Then I just started asking them a couple of simple questions, and it didn\u2019t seem profound; but what began to affect them was when I was consistent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere was the amazing thing:\u00a0 After only about five or six times, I got <em>derailed<\/em> and my kids said, \u201cDad, are we going to have family devotions this morning?\u201d\u00a0 I thought, \u201cAfter only about five or six days, they\u2019re reminding <em>me.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what I\u2019ve found as I\u2019ve talked to dads and moms who are using this.\u00a0\u00a0 They say, \u201cSure enough.\u00a0 After about five or six days of using the devotional, if we skip a day, the kids are reminding us.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you are doing it in the morning or <em>were<\/em> doing it in the morning when the kids were little?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m a morning person.\u00a0 There are two different ways to do it.\u00a0 Morning is a great time; but I\u2019ve talked to several people who just are not morning people, who are not getting their whole family up early.\u00a0 For them, I tell them to set the devotional next to where you sit at dinnertime; and when you\u2019re done with dinner, pull out the devotional and read it then.\u00a0 Again, it\u2019s only ten minutes; and you\u2019re gathered for dinner anyway, particularly if you have young children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As you read this, you have to reduce your expectations.\u00a0 Kids are going to get distracted.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to be playing in their food or getting ready for school.\u00a0 There\u2019s going to be some activity taking place, but you\u2019re asking them to listen as you read the Bible aloud to your family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll never forget Barbara reading one of Corrie ten Boom\u2019s stories about the home she grew up in.\u00a0 Of course, she went to a Nazi concentration camp during World War II, and in that concentration camp she was calling to mind the Scriptures that her parents had taught her in their family devotions.\u00a0 She was also calling to mind how she, as a little girl, would just sit and listen to her Father read the Bible, read it out loud.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t nearly as sophisticated as what you\u2019ve got here\u2014what you\u2019ve prepared for parents to be able to lead their children in\u2014but it shows you the power of Scripture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s really the objective of what we\u2019re talking about here\u2014is to get your children into the Bible, and to get the Bible into them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are <em>absolutely<\/em> correct.\u00a0 I don\u2019t really have much to offer.\u00a0 I make plenty of mistakes with my kids.\u00a0 I\u2019m an average dad.\u00a0 I get angry; I get frustrated when they\u2019re fidgeting at the table.\u00a0 Almost every case\u2014with six kids, you\u2019ve got <em>someone<\/em> who\u2019s not paying attention.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No doubt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just had to realize, \u201cNow let me just drive on for the four that are paying attention today.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 It is a different four every day; so you get them all by the end of the month.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m just going to read from God\u2019s Word.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to leave the legacy with my kids that they heard God\u2019s Word in our household.\u00a0 If all I do is that, then I think I\u2019ve had that effect on their lives that they\u2019ll remember that; and one day they\u2019re going to be moms and dads themselves.\u00a0 I want them to carry on that valuable tradition with their kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have kids now who just headed off to college.\u00a0 Were you doing family devotions all the way through their high school years, even when they were going in different directions, and one had a job, and this and that?\u00a0 Were you still trying to make this a daily discipline?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 We still do family devotions today.\u00a0 The <em>Long Story Short<\/em> devotions\u2014they got the draft run, the rewritten run, the first-draft-of-the-book run.\u00a0 So we\u2019re actually currently not using <em>Long Story Short. <\/em>\u00a0We\u2019ve got two 18-year-olds, a 16-year-old, a 14-year-old; but we do devotions every day.\u00a0 I\u2019ve kept up the discipline of simply reading a portion of God\u2019s Word, commenting, simple thoughts:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIsn\u2019t that amazing that after he met Jesus, Zaccheus would give away half of all that he owns?\u00a0 What an amazing thought.\u201d\u00a0 And then I just look for an opportunity to pray.\u00a0 So my son is going on a business trip, \u201cLet\u2019s all pray for Nathan.\u00a0 He\u2019s going on a trip.\u00a0 Let\u2019s make sure that we lift him up during the week; but today, we\u2019re going to go around the room and have everybody pray for Nathan.\u00a0 Why don\u2019t you ask God to bless and keep him safe?\u201d\u00a0 And then around the room we go; and again, ten minutes and we\u2019re off.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI like to think of it like water pouring over granite in a stream.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t seem like much in any given moment; but over time, it wears the rough spots smooth.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I think God\u2019s Word does; and then the Holy Spirit\u2019s power\u2014quickening that Word to their hearts at some point in time\u2014there\u2019s that transformation of bringing the dead to life and watching our children become Christians\u2014and knowing that it didn\u2019t have anything to do with us, but with the powerful message that we presented to them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have 78 weeks in here.\u00a0 You not only give us a bonus day off during the week, but you take us all the way through a year, almost a year-and-a-half.\u00a0 One of the things that you left out that you do in these devotions is you have a little\u2014I don\u2019t know what you want to call it at the beginning.\u00a0 It\u2019s kind of curious or it creates a different slant on what they\u2019re about to learn.\u00a0 What do you call this little section that you read aloud before you actually get into the devotional?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 A little bit of an introduction.\u00a0 For instance, in the Genesis devotion, in the very beginning, I talk about, \u201cImagine that you go to a pet store.\u00a0 You just won a goldfish, and you\u2019re going to create an environment for your goldfish.\u00a0 You could go down the aisle and pick the plants you want, pick out the rocks that you want, and create a world.\u00a0 That\u2019s, in fact, what God did for us\u2014His <em>amazing<\/em> creativity\u2014creating the world around us\u2014the sky, the birds, the animals.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to give a creative introduction as often as I can so that the kids can begin to connect with what <em>can be<\/em> more abstract stories in the Bible.\u00a0 One of the things that we try to do is to connect every Old Testament story to God\u2019s greater plan of redemption\u2014Adam being the first Adam, and Jesus being the second Adam\u2014to obey in a way that Adam could never as he sinned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So rather than just a child hearing about Daniel in the Lion\u2019s Den and going, \u201cThat\u2019s a remarkable story of God\u2019s deliverance and God\u2019s protection for Daniel,\u201d you\u2019re trying to point them to the cross.\u00a0 You\u2019re trying to point them to Jesus\u2014and see that, really, the Old Testament is a book of types\u2014it\u2019s a book of story pictures that are all designed to point us in the direction of Jesus; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 So the whole theme of salvation\u2014the whole theme that Daniel would have been saved\u2014\u201cWhat does that salvation point to?\u00a0 Is God a God who is going to save us when we\u2019re in difficult situations\u2014so that if robbers are coming, we can trust that He\u2019s going to save us?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, God will do that, but that\u2019s not the point of the story. The point of the story is that God is a saving God for Daniel, and He is a saving God for us through Jesus Christ and His sacrifice on the cross.\u00a0 He only has one salvation; Daniel trusted in the plan of God, which ultimately pointed to Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Marty, why the Old Testament?\u00a0 You have, as Dennis said, 70 plus weeks where you\u2019re walking through chronologically from the Garden of Eden to Malachi\u2014you are walking through.\u00a0 Why the OId Testament rather than the New Testament?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, there\u2019s the New Testament half as well; that will be called <em>Old Story New<\/em>, and that will be coming out after this one.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Ah, the sequel is coming; huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 The sequel, absolutely.\u00a0 The Bible <em>continues.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Have your kids all been through that one, too?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 They have. (Laughter)\u00a0 Now you know why we\u2019re doing something a <em>little bit<\/em> different.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Again, I think of most people\u2014let\u2019s start with the story of Jesus and then we\u2019ll fit things around there.\u00a0 You started in the Garden of Eden.\u00a0 Why did you do that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the story of Jesus <em>begins<\/em> in the Garden of Eden.\u00a0 Most people don\u2019t realize that; but after Adam and Eve sinned, what did God do?\u00a0 He didn\u2019t summarily judge them\u2014bring the whole thing to a close and say, \u201cThat\u2019s it. I\u2019m done with humankind.\u00a0 It\u2019s over; the experiment\u2019s done.\u00a0 You failed.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe killed animals and provided skins to clothe them and gave a tremendous promise to Eve\u2014that her offspring would bring deliverance.\u00a0 Satan would strike against His heel; but, ultimately, Jesus would conquer Satan.\u00a0 So both in the animal sacrifice and in that promise, in the midst of the curse, we see the foreshadowing of Jesus coming, the Savior to come.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Marty, you\u2019ve been through\u2014it\u2019s safe to say, hundreds of these with your kids; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s true, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just in pilot-testing these things, you\u2019ve been through a lot of them.\u00a0 If you could just freeze-frame one of these devotions that you were taking your kids through, do you have any idea which one it would be and why?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 David and Goliath.\u00a0 It\u2019s easy.\u00a0 It is right from the start\u2014it is a familiar story.\u00a0 But as I was taking my kids through the story of David and Goliath, I realized an amazing truth about that story.\u00a0 The charge that Goliath gave the Israelites was, \u201cChoose from among you one man to come and fight me\u2014a representative\u2014and if <em>he<\/em> wins, then all of Israel wins.\u00a0 But if <em>I,<\/em> Goliath, win, then the Philistines win and <em>you<\/em> become our slaves.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI realized in that moment, just as I was talking to my kids\u2014the Holy Spirit just opened that truth up to me\u2014that just as Jesus is our representative head, so was David the representative head.\u00a0 I was able to write that into the material and realize, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 All of these years I\u2019ve been telling my kids, \u2018They want to be like David.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 You know the song, <em>Be like David<\/em>?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I realized, \u201cNo, they\u2019re not <em>David<\/em> in the story.\u00a0 They\u2019re the Israelites standing on the sidelines, not doing what God called them to do\u2014immobilized in fear because of the situation, not doing battle\u2014and they needed a deliverer.\u00a0 They needed someone; so who was going to come?\u00a0 Strong and mighty?\u00a0 Amazing?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Meek and humble shepherd boy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just remember how God touched that devotion in our house, and it wasn\u2019t about the amazing job that I did; but in that moment\u2014and I think this will happen in <em>every <\/em>house\u2014God, if you\u2019re faithful, is going to meet you.\u00a0 It\u2019s those wonderful, sweet days, where the Spirit of God comes; and He brings that truth to your family.\u00a0 That\u2019s the way it happened for us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and that\u2019s what you want.\u00a0 You want your kids to capture the idea of who God is and who they are, and who they are <em>not<\/em>, and how they\u2019re <em>not<\/em> the center of the universe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 They think they are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, of course they do.\u00a0 That\u2019s how we\u2019re born.\u00a0 But I think it is part of why in Psalm 78 there is the charge for us to teach our children, and the next generation, and even the children yet to be born to know the testimonies of God\u2014His work in people\u2019s lives\u2014to know the truth of God\u2019s Word and the truth about God.\u00a0 It says in that passage of Scripture, \u201cSo that they will set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The reason we teach our kids, ultimately, is so they can know God through Jesus Christ; but, then secondly, for the rest of their lifetimes, learn to walk with Him.\u00a0 As they face their own crisis of belief, their own moment where they can cower, as you said, with the Israelites in fear\u2014instead, be called out to say, \u201cNo, God called me to be a man, called me to be a woman of faith, because that\u2019s what Dad taught us.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Asaph in that Psalm rallies the people as he is writing, or perhaps at one point, speaking.\u00a0 \u201cWe will not hide them, the glorious truths of the Lord, from our children; but tell these glorious deeds to the coming generation.\u201d\u00a0 I feel like that\u2019s what dads need.\u00a0 They just need a little bit of encouragement.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you\u2019re like me, and you\u2019re a dad out there, you have tried and you have failed.\u00a0 You have picked up a book, or maybe even picked up your Bible, and you just weren\u2019t consistent, or you did great for a while, and then it dropped off.\u00a0 Let me just pass on the rallying cry:\u00a0 \u201cWe <em>cannot <\/em>hide these things from our children!\u00a0 Pick it up.\u00a0 Pick up that Bible.\u00a0 Do it again.\u00a0 Get a copy of <em>Long Story Short<\/em> and give it another try.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 One of the things that Bob and I delight in here on <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>is finding a great tool like this because we know that, for the most part, moms and dads do want to do this thing; but they just need a tool put in their hands that makes them effective, and keeps the attention of their children, and gives them a <em>chance<\/em> to be successful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m guessing you can get all the way through <em>Long Story Short<\/em> in the 78 weeks that you have in here, and you can start over again because your kids will hear different things the next time they hear it.\u00a0 They won\u2019t remember everything about the story from the first time they heard it, and it but over time, it wears the rough spots smooth.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I think God\u2019s Word does; and then the Holy Spirit\u2019s power\u2014quickening that Word to their hearts at some point in time\u2014there\u2019s that transformation of bringing the dead to life and watching our children become Christians\u2014and knowing that it didn\u2019t have anything to do with us, but with the powerful message that we presented to them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday, October 27<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife\u00ae, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk today about a great new way that you can impress the truth of God\u2019s Word on the hearts of your children.\u00a0 Stay with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 Well, this came about\u2014I don\u2019t know\u2014maybe 30 years too late.\u00a0 You know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was thinking that same thing, Bob.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I was thinking, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have <em>anything<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0 I think this book that our guest on today\u2019s broadcast has written\u2014this may win the poundage award.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is 400 pages long, and I could have used this.\u00a0 Where were you?\u00a0 Where were you back when I had my kids, huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, let me introduce him.\u00a0 Marty Machowski joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\u00a0 Marty, welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you, Dennis.\u00a0 It\u2019s wonderful to be here today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Marty is a pastor at Covenant Fellowship Church in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania.\u00a0 What part of the state is that in?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just outside of Philadelphia, a western suburb.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019re passing out good tips on where to get a Philly cheesesteak if any of our listeners\u2014do you want to tell them where to go?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would go to Geno\u2019s.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob goes there, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I go to Geno\u2019s and Pat\u2019s\u2014usually in the same trip, okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a good trip.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is a good trip.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Get one; go across the street and get another.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Marty likes those Philly cheesesteaks.\u00a0 He also likes children.\u00a0 He and his wife Lois have six of them, and he has written a\u2014I don\u2019t want to call this a book.\u00a0 It\u2019s a devotional for families\u2014ten-minute devotionals for families called <em>Long Story Short<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want you to tell us\u2014do you remember your <em>first<\/em> effort, Marty, at a devotional with your family because Bob and I have painful memories of us trying to lead our families in these things.\u00a0 We had so much idealism of what it was going to look like.\u00a0 Do you remember how you first tried it?\u00a0 What happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I do; and it was a really sorry thing.\u00a0 I thought that a devotion had to be magnificent\u2014it had to declare some fantastic biblical truth.\u00a0 I remember sitting down with my children\u2014I think that the oldest twins, Emma and Nathan, were probably about five when I thought, \u201cYou know, they\u2019re about ready for devotions.\u00a0 Martha is three, and we can do this.\u201d\u00a0 I prepared an outline.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You didn\u2019t get out your Grudem\u2019s <em>Systematic Theology<\/em> and start to work on that, did you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 I didn\u2019t; but as a pastor, you have to have an outline.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That was your <em>first <\/em>mistake, having an outline.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was terrible.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t even get their attention.\u00a0 \u201cKids, it\u2019s time for devotions,\u201d and they\u2019re off in\u2014I ended up getting angry; and I thought, \u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s supposed to <em>end <\/em>this way.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So the devotional was, \u201cDon\u2019t let the sun go down on your anger.\u201d\u00a0 Was that the devotional for the day?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was the practical application the Holy Spirit gave me.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 I don\u2019t remember what the devotion was; but I remember thinking, \u201cI don\u2019t know what to do.\u201d\u00a0 As a pastor, I thought, \u201cI know the Bible, but I don\u2019t know how to do this with my family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And there are <em>millions<\/em> of dads listening saying, \u201cI don\u2019t know what to do either; and not only do I not know what to do, but the things I\u2019ve tried\u2014I do know what <em>not<\/em> to do because the things I have tried have not worked.\u00a0 So I\u2019ve given up and figured, \u2018I just hope it works out.\u2019\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re coming along saying, \u201cDon\u2019t give up.\u00a0 There\u2019s a way to make this work.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 It is <em>not <\/em>complicated.\u00a0 That\u2019s the first problem.\u00a0 You think that this has to be <em>profound\u2014<\/em>it has to be <em>amazing<\/em>.\u00a0 What I realized is, \u201cNo, it\u2019s actually better to just be consistent.\u201d\u00a0 The simple truth of the Gospel, spoken to your children day by day, in short ten-minute segments, will transform their lives, not because you\u2019re amazing but because the message and the God behind it is amazing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want you to take us into your devotional, <em>Long Story Short,<\/em> and explain how you put this together because you didn\u2019t just design it for a day.\u00a0 You actually designed it for parents to unpack over a period of a week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\u00a0 I figured there are seven days in a week.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to go to church on Sunday\u2014that leaves six.\u00a0 Right from the start, I thought, \u201cI\u2019m not going to do six devotions per week because, as a dad, I\u2019m going to mess up and miss one.\u201d\u00a0 So I thought, \u201cLet\u2019s do five.\u201d\u00a0 Right from the start, you get a free day.\u00a0 You don\u2019t have to do devotions every day; I give you five for the week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey are only ten minutes long.\u00a0 You read a Scripture.\u00a0 I give you a paragraph that you can share with your family, simply reading what I wrote.\u00a0 Then, I give you discussion questions that you can go back and ask your kids.\u00a0 And in the end, there\u2019s a prayer. I even tell you what to pray.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe amazing thing about this devotion is not what <em>I <\/em>wrote; but I am mining the treasure of God\u2019s Word so that what you\u2019re giving your children is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, even through these Old Testament stories every single week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So a Scripture, a little commentary on it, some questions, and then a prayer; and that\u2019s the ten minutes?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s the ten minutes, and every week we give you a bonus activity you can do to draw your children\u2019s interest.\u00a0 For instance, when you\u2019re going to do the week about Noah and the flood, I say, \u201cBring an umbrella and open it up at your devotions,\u201d and watch the kids think you\u2019re crazy as you tell them, \u201cIt\u2019s going to rain.\u201d\u00a0 When you\u2019ve played that out for a little bit, you say, \u201cYou think I\u2019m crazy. What do you think the people in Noah\u2019s day would have thought when he began to build a boat where there was no water\u2014period?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Mm hmm.\u00a0 How did you get from your first attempt that you said was a disaster to the point where you had something that you could replicate day in and day out that was working or connecting with the kids?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 The process that you talk about is the process that generated this book.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t set out to write a book.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t think, \u201cOh, you know what?\u00a0 Dads need a devotional book that will help them teach their kids.\u201d\u00a0 What I thought is, \u201cI need something for <em>my <\/em>family.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were working through a program we had written, a children\u2019s ministry Sunday school program.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWouldn\u2019t it be wonderful to be able to follow up on that program at home?\u201d\u00a0 So I started out by taking some of the lessons we were using on Sunday\u2014it followed through the Bible from Genesis through Revelation.\u00a0 <em>Long Story Short<\/em> is the Old Testament half of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI started saying, \u201cAlright.\u00a0 Let\u2019s try this with my kids.\u00a0 Wow, if I just read a Scripture and I follow along in the Bible chronology, I\u2019ll eventually hit the whole Bible, hitting the major stories.\u201d\u00a0 Then I just started asking them a couple of simple questions, and it didn\u2019t seem profound; but what began to affect them was when I was consistent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere was the amazing thing:\u00a0 After only about five or six times, I got <em>derailed<\/em> and my kids said, \u201cDad, are we going to have family devotions this morning?\u201d\u00a0 I thought, \u201cAfter only about five or six days, they\u2019re reminding <em>me.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what I\u2019ve found as I\u2019ve talked to dads and moms who are using this.\u00a0\u00a0 They say, \u201cSure enough.\u00a0 After about five or six days of using the devotional, if we skip a day, the kids are reminding us.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you are doing it in the morning or <em>were<\/em> doing it in the morning when the kids were little?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m a morning person.\u00a0 There are two different ways to do it.\u00a0 Morning is a great time; but I\u2019ve talked to several people who just are not morning people, who are not getting their whole family up early.\u00a0 For them, I tell them to set the devotional next to where you sit at dinnertime; and when you\u2019re done with dinner, pull out the devotional and read it then.\u00a0 Again, it\u2019s only ten minutes; and you\u2019re gathered for dinner anyway, particularly if you have young children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As you read this, you have to reduce your expectations.\u00a0 Kids are going to get distracted.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to be playing in their food or getting ready for school.\u00a0 There\u2019s going to be some activity taking place, but you\u2019re asking them to listen as you read the Bible aloud to your family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ll never forget Barbara reading one of Corrie ten Boom\u2019s stories about the home she grew up in.\u00a0 Of course, she went to a Nazi concentration camp during World War II, and in that concentration camp she was calling to mind the Scriptures that her parents had taught her in their family devotions.\u00a0 She was also calling to mind how she, as a little girl, would just sit and listen to her Father read the Bible, read it out loud.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t nearly as sophisticated as what you\u2019ve got here\u2014what you\u2019ve prepared for parents to be able to lead their children in\u2014but it shows you the power of Scripture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s really the objective of what we\u2019re talking about here\u2014is to get your children into the Bible, and to get the Bible into them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are <em>absolutely<\/em> correct.\u00a0 I don\u2019t really have much to offer.\u00a0 I make plenty of mistakes with my kids.\u00a0 I\u2019m an average dad.\u00a0 I get angry; I get frustrated when they\u2019re fidgeting at the table.\u00a0 Almost every case\u2014with six kids, you\u2019ve got <em>someone<\/em> who\u2019s not paying attention.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No doubt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just had to realize, \u201cNow let me just drive on for the four that are paying attention today.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 It is a different four every day; so you get them all by the end of the month.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m just going to read from God\u2019s Word.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to leave the legacy with my kids that they heard God\u2019s Word in our household.\u00a0 If all I do is that, then I think I\u2019ve had that effect on their lives that they\u2019ll remember that; and one day they\u2019re going to be moms and dads themselves.\u00a0 I want them to carry on that valuable tradition with their kids.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have kids now who just headed off to college.\u00a0 Were you doing family devotions all the way through their high school years, even when they were going in different directions, and one had a job, and this and that?\u00a0 Were you still trying to make this a daily discipline?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 We still do family devotions today.\u00a0 The <em>Long Story Short<\/em> devotions\u2014they got the draft run, the rewritten run, the first-draft-of-the-book run.\u00a0 So we\u2019re actually currently not using <em>Long Story Short. <\/em>\u00a0We\u2019ve got two 18-year-olds, a 16-year-old, a 14-year-old; but we do devotions every day.\u00a0 I\u2019ve kept up the discipline of simply reading a portion of God\u2019s Word, commenting, simple thoughts:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIsn\u2019t that amazing that after he met Jesus, Zaccheus would give away half of all that he owns?\u00a0 What an amazing thought.\u201d\u00a0 And then I just look for an opportunity to pray.\u00a0 So my son is going on a business trip, \u201cLet\u2019s all pray for Nathan.\u00a0 He\u2019s going on a trip.\u00a0 Let\u2019s make sure that we lift him up during the week; but today, we\u2019re going to go around the room and have everybody pray for Nathan.\u00a0 Why don\u2019t you ask God to bless and keep him safe?\u201d\u00a0 And then around the room we go; and again, ten minutes and we\u2019re off.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI like to think of it like water pouring over granite in a stream.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t seem like much in any given moment; but over time, it wears the rough spots smooth.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I think God\u2019s Word does; and then the Holy Spirit\u2019s power\u2014quickening that Word to their hearts at some point in time\u2014there\u2019s that transformation of bringing the dead to life and watching our children become Christians\u2014and knowing that it didn\u2019t have anything to do with us, but with the powerful message that we presented to them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have 78 weeks in here.\u00a0 You not only give us a bonus day off during the week, but you take us all the way through a year, almost a year-and-a-half.\u00a0 One of the things that you left out that you do in these devotions is you have a little\u2014I don\u2019t know what you want to call it at the beginning.\u00a0 It\u2019s kind of curious or it creates a different slant on what they\u2019re about to learn.\u00a0 What do you call this little section that you read aloud before you actually get into the devotional?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 A little bit of an introduction.\u00a0 For instance, in the Genesis devotion, in the very beginning, I talk about, \u201cImagine that you go to a pet store.\u00a0 You just won a goldfish, and you\u2019re going to create an environment for your goldfish.\u00a0 You could go down the aisle and pick the plants you want, pick out the rocks that you want, and create a world.\u00a0 That\u2019s, in fact, what God did for us\u2014His <em>amazing<\/em> creativity\u2014creating the world around us\u2014the sky, the birds, the animals.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to give a creative introduction as often as I can so that the kids can begin to connect with what <em>can be<\/em> more abstract stories in the Bible.\u00a0 One of the things that we try to do is to connect every Old Testament story to God\u2019s greater plan of redemption\u2014Adam being the first Adam, and Jesus being the second Adam\u2014to obey in a way that Adam could never as he sinned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So rather than just a child hearing about Daniel in the Lion\u2019s Den and going, \u201cThat\u2019s a remarkable story of God\u2019s deliverance and God\u2019s protection for Daniel,\u201d you\u2019re trying to point them to the cross.\u00a0 You\u2019re trying to point them to Jesus\u2014and see that, really, the Old Testament is a book of types\u2014it\u2019s a book of story pictures that are all designed to point us in the direction of Jesus; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 So the whole theme of salvation\u2014the whole theme that Daniel would have been saved\u2014\u201cWhat does that salvation point to?\u00a0 Is God a God who is going to save us when we\u2019re in difficult situations\u2014so that if robbers are coming, we can trust that He\u2019s going to save us?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, God will do that, but that\u2019s not the point of the story. The point of the story is that God is a saving God for Daniel, and He is a saving God for us through Jesus Christ and His sacrifice on the cross.\u00a0 He only has one salvation; Daniel trusted in the plan of God, which ultimately pointed to Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Marty, why the Old Testament?\u00a0 You have, as Dennis said, 70 plus weeks where you\u2019re walking through chronologically from the Garden of Eden to Malachi\u2014you are walking through.\u00a0 Why the OId Testament rather than the New Testament?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, there\u2019s the New Testament half as well; that will be called <em>Old Story New<\/em>, and that will be coming out after this one.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Ah, the sequel is coming; huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 The sequel, absolutely.\u00a0 The Bible <em>continues.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Have your kids all been through that one, too?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 They have. (Laughter)\u00a0 Now you know why we\u2019re doing something a <em>little bit<\/em> different.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Again, I think of most people\u2014let\u2019s start with the story of Jesus and then we\u2019ll fit things around there.\u00a0 You started in the Garden of Eden.\u00a0 Why did you do that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the story of Jesus <em>begins<\/em> in the Garden of Eden.\u00a0 Most people don\u2019t realize that; but after Adam and Eve sinned, what did God do?\u00a0 He didn\u2019t summarily judge them\u2014bring the whole thing to a close and say, \u201cThat\u2019s it. I\u2019m done with humankind.\u00a0 It\u2019s over; the experiment\u2019s done.\u00a0 You failed.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe killed animals and provided skins to clothe them and gave a tremendous promise to Eve\u2014that her offspring would bring deliverance.\u00a0 Satan would strike against His heel; but, ultimately, Jesus would conquer Satan.\u00a0 So both in the animal sacrifice and in that promise, in the midst of the curse, we see the foreshadowing of Jesus coming, the Savior to come.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Marty, you\u2019ve been through\u2014it\u2019s safe to say, hundreds of these with your kids; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s true, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just in pilot-testing these things, you\u2019ve been through a lot of them.\u00a0 If you could just freeze-frame one of these devotions that you were taking your kids through, do you have any idea which one it would be and why?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 David and Goliath.\u00a0 It\u2019s easy.\u00a0 It is right from the start\u2014it is a familiar story.\u00a0 But as I was taking my kids through the story of David and Goliath, I realized an amazing truth about that story.\u00a0 The charge that Goliath gave the Israelites was, \u201cChoose from among you one man to come and fight me\u2014a representative\u2014and if <em>he<\/em> wins, then all of Israel wins.\u00a0 But if <em>I,<\/em> Goliath, win, then the Philistines win and <em>you<\/em> become our slaves.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI realized in that moment, just as I was talking to my kids\u2014the Holy Spirit just opened that truth up to me\u2014that just as Jesus is our representative head, so was David the representative head.\u00a0 I was able to write that into the material and realize, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 All of these years I\u2019ve been telling my kids, \u2018They want to be like David.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 You know the song, <em>Be like David<\/em>?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I realized, \u201cNo, they\u2019re not <em>David<\/em> in the story.\u00a0 They\u2019re the Israelites standing on the sidelines, not doing what God called them to do\u2014immobilized in fear because of the situation, not doing battle\u2014and they needed a deliverer.\u00a0 They needed someone; so who was going to come?\u00a0 Strong and mighty?\u00a0 Amazing?\u00a0 No.\u00a0 Meek and humble shepherd boy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just remember how God touched that devotion in our house, and it wasn\u2019t about the amazing job that I did; but in that moment\u2014and I think this will happen in <em>every <\/em>house\u2014God, if you\u2019re faithful, is going to meet you.\u00a0 It\u2019s those wonderful, sweet days, where the Spirit of God comes; and He brings that truth to your family.\u00a0 That\u2019s the way it happened for us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and that\u2019s what you want.\u00a0 You want your kids to capture the idea of who God is and who they are, and who they are <em>not<\/em>, and how they\u2019re <em>not<\/em> the center of the universe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 They think they are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, of course they do.\u00a0 That\u2019s how we\u2019re born.\u00a0 But I think it is part of why in Psalm 78 there is the charge for us to teach our children, and the next generation, and even the children yet to be born to know the testimonies of God\u2014His work in people\u2019s lives\u2014to know the truth of God\u2019s Word and the truth about God.\u00a0 It says in that passage of Scripture, \u201cSo that they will set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep His commandments.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The reason we teach our kids, ultimately, is so they can know God through Jesus Christ; but, then secondly, for the rest of their lifetimes, learn to walk with Him.\u00a0 As they face their own crisis of belief, their own moment where they can cower, as you said, with the Israelites in fear\u2014instead, be called out to say, \u201cNo, God called me to be a man, called me to be a woman of faith, because that\u2019s what Dad taught us.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Marty:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Asaph in that Psalm rallies the people as he is writing, or perhaps at one point, speaking.\u00a0 \u201cWe will not hide them, the glorious truths of the Lord, from our children; but tell these glorious deeds to the coming generation.\u201d\u00a0 I feel like that\u2019s what dads need.\u00a0 They just need a little bit of encouragement.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you\u2019re like me, and you\u2019re a dad out there, you have tried and you have failed.\u00a0 You have picked up a book, or maybe even picked up your Bible, and you just weren\u2019t consistent, or you did great for a while, and then it dropped off.\u00a0 Let me just pass on the rallying cry:\u00a0 \u201cWe <em>cannot <\/em>hide these things from our children!\u00a0 Pick it up.\u00a0 Pick up that Bible.\u00a0 Do it again.\u00a0 Get a copy of <em>Long Story Short<\/em> and give it another try.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 One of the things that Bob and I delight in here on <em>FamilyLife Today <\/em>is finding a great tool like this because we know that, for the most part, moms and dads do want to do this thing;
