Rainey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are many times in our lives when we get asked questions around what Christ said\u2014when we just need to let it stand\u2014what He said as the truth.\u00a0 We need to embrace it, not back down from it\u2014and like Martin Luther, \u201cHere I stand.\u00a0 I can do no other.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and train our kids to do the same.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Wednesday, October 26th.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife\u00ae, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We\u2019ll talk today about what we can do as parents to help our children stand strong when the winds of culture are pressing against them.\u00a0 Stay tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWelcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 Do you think that the reason that people tend to shy away from standing firm in the truth is because it won\u2019t be a popular stand to take?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I think it involves being rejected by people, maybe <em>hated<\/em> by people, or worse.\u00a0 So, I think the easiest thing to do is to conform\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014is just to blend in with the masses and be a chameleon.\u00a0 We have far too many families today, unfortunately, that look a whole lot like their non-Christian counterpart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, certainly, as young people are going through adolescence, they are wrestling with their own sense of, \u201cWho am I?\u00a0 What\u2019s\u2014\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201c\u2014life all about?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In the midst of that, there are plenty of voices suggesting to you that this is where life is found or this is what truth is.\u00a0 You can see where a young person can get tossed to and fro.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think the junior high years, somewhere around grade seven, eight, even the ninth grade, can ultimately be the real testing of a young person\u2019s life.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think a lot of young people do real well with it.\u00a0 I think a lot of them cave in to the peer pressure.\u00a0 We have a friend who really saw her life transformed during that same age range.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason I know this story is because Crawford and Karen Loritts are very good friends of ours.\u00a0 Also, I know more of the story now because Barbara spent some time not long ago with Karen Loritts, on the phone, wanting to hear the whole story\u2014the rest of the story\u2014of how she ultimately turned to the truth as a young person.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about a new resource that Barbara has created for families to teach the truth of Scripture to children today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You included Karen Loritts\u2019 story, Barbara, in a new devotional book that you\u2019ve put together called <em>Growing Together in Truth<\/em>.\u00a0 First of all, welcome back to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is the first time that I can remember that you\u2019ve included a story in one of your devotionals\u2014this is the third of these devotionals that you\u2019ve put together now\u2014but included a story of someone you know\u2014someone who is a contemporary of yours\u2014 who is alive.\u00a0 You really brought us a very fresh example of what truth looks like in someone\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I\u2019m trying to include at least one person in each of these\u2014someone who has lived it out and is <em>still<\/em> living\u2014that we can look to.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just all about people who have lived in the past\u2014so, therefore, all of this truth and all of these principles died with them\u2014but it\u2019s still relevant today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted to tell Karen\u2019s story because Karen grew up in an incredibly difficult situation as a child\u2014that she survived; that she thrived; that she, today, has a healthy marriage; that she is a godly woman; and that she has great kids and grandkids\u2014is a testimony to the power of the truth, the power of Scripture in a person\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, we had dinner with Crawford and Karen one time (this was years ago).\u00a0 We were good friends, but I had never really heard Karen\u2019s story of where she\u2019d come from.\u00a0 She\u2019d grown up in the, really, the <em>hood <\/em>in Philadelphia.\u00a0 My admiration for her as a human being just went through the ceiling because she overcame <em>enormous<\/em> adversity in what she faced day in and day out.\u00a0 I just thought, \u201cWhat an <em>incredible<\/em> story of redemption!\u201d\u00a0 God did redeem\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014Karen\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, Karen, as a little girl, was lost.\u00a0 That\u2019s where I start her story, talking about how\u2014here\u2019s a little girl at seven years old who is lost.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that she didn\u2019t know where she lived.\u00a0 She knew how to get to her apartment, but she was lost in this sea of craziness.\u00a0 She lived in a concrete, public housing project area of Philadelphia.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHer mother wasn\u2019t married.\u00a0 Her mother worked odd hours, and Karen was in charge of her little brother.\u00a0 She and her little brother would come home from school.\u00a0 They would climb the stairs to that apartment.\u00a0 They would step over broken bottles.\u00a0 They would step over drunks in the hall.\u00a0 They would smell the smell of urine as they went up the stairs to their apartment.\u00a0 They would go into the apartment and close the door.\u00a0 There would be no one to welcome them because her mother was working.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, here\u2019s this little girl, who at seven years old, is as lost as she can be.\u00a0 She has no one giving her direction; but God, in His great mercy, introduced Karen to some people who <em>did know<\/em> Him.\u00a0 When she was a few years older, she met this couple who belonged to a church down the road.\u00a0 Her mom actually encouraged her to go.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, she grabbed her little brother by the hand, and they\u2019d walk down the street to this church.\u00a0 They\u2019d go to Sunday school.\u00a0 Sometimes, they\u2019d get something to eat, which was really appealing to them as kids.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, a few years later, she, her mom, and her little brother moved to another place; and she started attending another church.\u00a0 As Karen tells it, she says, \u201cI started going to the <em>white<\/em> church,\u201d because Karen is African-American.\u00a0 The pastor of the white church was actually from Russia.\u00a0 He was Ukrainian.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, Karen grew up in those years, those middle-elementary years, going to this little white church in the suburbs.\u00a0 There she heard about Jesus.\u00a0 She heard that Jesus loved her.\u00a0 She heard that Jesus had a plan for her life.\u00a0 She kept hearing it over, and over, and over.\u00a0 The contrast between this Ukrainian man and his wife\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014pastoring this little white church in the suburbs of Philadelphia and the things that they were teaching her out of the Bible about Jesus and that Jesus had a plan for her life\u2014and what she saw at home with her mom and her extended family, who\u2014they never got along, and they were always changing where they lived.\u00a0 There was so much instability in her home life; but in that church, she felt secure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe found a sense of stability.\u00a0 It drew her, and it kept drawing her until she was in her junior high years, as you mentioned a minute ago.\u00a0 She decided that this was what she wanted.\u00a0 This life that she was learning about in this church was what she wanted.\u00a0 She gave her life to Christ.\u00a0 She said, \u201cI want to do life God\u2019s way, not the way I was raised.\u00a0 I want stability, not instability.\u00a0 I want peace, not constant disruption.\u201d\u00a0 So, she chose to give her life to Christ when she was in junior high.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was a turning point, and you make the connection in Karen\u2019s story with another story of the exploration of Antarctica.\u00a0 Karen really stepped from darkness into light in that moment, and you look back to those Antarctic explorers who were trapped in darkness years ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 They were lost in utter darkness, too, as Karen was; only, Karen\u2019s was a spiritual darkness, and theirs was a physical darkness.\u00a0 In both stories, in Karen\u2019s life and in Ernest Shackleton\u2019s voyage to the South Pole, both of them found their way out of darkness by following the truth.\u00a0 Karen, by following the truth of Scripture; and Shackleton, by following the truth of the sextant, which was the instrument they used to calculate their distance and the direction they needed to take.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was because they believed the truth of that instrument\u2014that the instrument wasn\u2019t lying to them\u2014even though it didn\u2019t feel like they were going in the right direction.\u00a0 The instrument took them to safety.\u00a0 They were rescued, and they lived.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKaren found the same thing to be true because she banked on the Word of God.\u00a0 She said, \u201cThis is the truth.\u00a0 This is right, and I\u2019m going to give my life to it.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to follow what it says.\u201d\u00a0 Because she gave her life to Christ and because she followed the truth of Scripture, God took her out of that unstable life of darkness that she was born into and redeemed her and gave her a life of light and hope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This chapter in the book is subtitled \u201cTruth Shows the Path<em>.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 That\u2019s what you\u2019re talking about here\u2014that the truth leads the way.\u00a0 It guides the way.\u00a0 It is like a flashlight for our paths.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what Scripture is.\u00a0 If you think about today, we may not be growing up in a ghetto in Philly, but we\u2019ve all got enough cultural darkness around us today clouding our direction\u2014how we\u2019re living and the choices we\u2019re making.\u00a0 There is pornography.\u00a0 There are choices on the internet.\u00a0 There is adultery.\u00a0 There is the rejection of the absolute standards of Scripture.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you are trying to do in this devotional book for families is give parents a tool to tell stories\u2014to be able to drive truth into the hearts of young people so that, as they encounter darkness <em>around<\/em> their lives, they\u2019re going to know their way.\u00a0 They\u2019re not going to be lost like Karen was, but they\u2019re going to know the direction to go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 The key is\u2014is once you know the truth\u2014is that you believe it even when it is dark, even when it\u2019s confusing, or even when everybody else around you is saying, \u201cGo this way.\u201d\u00a0 If the truth is your guide and you\u2019ve banked your life on it, you will go with what the truth says, even if it doesn\u2019t feel right, because we know that God\u2019s Word never changes\u2014that He will <em>not <\/em>lead us astray; and we can count on the truth of His Word, no matter what.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you tell the story in your book, in your devotional, <em>Growing Together in Truth, <\/em>about a somewhat famous, historical figure who was pursuing truth by trying to find it in religion and, ultimately, found it in the Scriptures.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis was interesting.\u00a0 I was reading something the other day that was talking about the fact that the word religion, if you take it apart, the word\u2014the \u201cligion\u201d side of that\u2014the \u201cligion\u201d is the same word that we use for ligaments, those connective tissues that hold things together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Interesting.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Religion is an attempt on our part to reconnect with God\u2014re-connecting.\u00a0 Of course, Christianity is not our attempt to connect with God, but it\u2019s God connecting with us through Christ.\u00a0 It\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the other way around.\u00a0 Here was a young monk pursuing God, trying to connect with Him by obedience\u2014who, ultimately, found truth.\u00a0 God connected with him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, this is a story of a young man who had a very dramatic occurrence early in his life.\u00a0 He was caught in a thunderstorm with a friend.\u00a0 They were both riding back to the university on horse.\u00a0 His friend was struck by lightning and was killed.\u00a0 It left this other young man badly shaken (as happens to all of us) if we\u2019re in a car wreck and someone else in the car is very seriously injured, and we aren\u2019t.\u00a0 It rattles our faith because we say, \u201cWhy him and not me?\u201d\u00a0 I mean, we hear those stories all the time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, this young man was saying the same thing, \u201cWhy him and not me?\u00a0 Why was I left, and he was taken?\u201d\u00a0 He began to try to find the answers in religion.\u00a0 He was studying religion; and he thought, \u201cThis is the answer.\u00a0 This is how I find out what God means, and what God wants from me,\u201d and all that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the process of studying his religion, he was reading the Bible.\u00a0 He came across the verse in Romans that says, \u201cThe just shall live by faith.\u201d\u00a0 When he read that, it was as if a light bulb went on in a dark room.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe hear that phrase a lot, but it\u2019s <em>really <\/em>true.\u00a0 It was very true for him because he thought he had to earn his way to God.\u00a0 So many of us think that; we feel that way.\u00a0 We think, \u201cIf I just do enough right, God will be pleased with me, and He will accept me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat this young man discovered in that verse is that it had absolutely <em>nothing <\/em>to do with his performance\u2014absolutely <em>nothing<\/em> to do with how good he was, or how smart he was, or how <em>anything<\/em> he was.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or how religious.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or how religious, exactly.\u00a0 It was by faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In fact, his <em>pursuit<\/em> of trying to live right\u2014he had just realized every day how far short he fell.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was casting him further and further into despair.\u00a0 I imagine some of our listeners by this point know who it is we\u2019ve been talking about.\u00a0 This is the account of Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in the 1500\u2019s, who, ultimately, faced a showdown later in life where the issue of truth was paramount.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was in the church at the time that he made this discovery.\u00a0 He began to teach others what he had discovered in the Bible; but there was a practice in the church that was common in those days, where people were paying money to the priest\u2014to the church\u2014for their forgiveness of their sins.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMartin Luther is looking at this going, \u201cWait a minute!\u00a0 The Bible doesn\u2019t teach that.\u00a0 There\u2019s <em>nothing<\/em> in the Bible about paying money to have your sins forgiven.\u00a0 What\u2019s with this?\u201d\u00a0 As he watched that, the conviction in his heart grew.\u00a0 He finally thought, \u201cI\u2019ve got to say something about the truth.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, famously, Martin Luther wrote up everything that he believed about this practice and what he believed about being saved by faith alone\u2014he nailed it to the door of the church in Wittenberg on October 31, 1517.\u00a0 It caused such a stir that, not long after that, he was asked to renounce what he believed\u2014what he had written\u2014what he stood for.\u00a0 He very famously said before that body of church leaders, \u201cHere I stand.\u00a0 I can do no other.\u00a0 I will not recant.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe truth that he discovered in the Scripture changed his life.\u00a0 So, therefore, he was teaching others the truth that had changed his life, but it cost him.\u00a0 He had to stand up and defend that before those who didn\u2019t believe it.\u00a0 Often that happens when we believe the truth.\u00a0 We are going to have to stand up and defend it at some point with those who don\u2019t believe it.\u00a0 It makes them feel very uncomfortable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 His life was on the line.\u00a0 This was not simply a case of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014\u201cWell, I\u2019m leaving the church.\u201d\u00a0 This was a case of, \u201cWould he be charged with heresy, and would he be put to death\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, would he be killed?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014as a result of espousing what others thought was heresy?\u201d\u00a0 That moment you describe\u2014where he says, \u201cHere I stand.\u00a0 I can do nothing else.\u00a0 God, help me,\u201d is a powerful moment in all of history.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It really is.\u00a0 For some reason (I\u2019m not sure why), I\u2019m just having a flashback of a number of TV programs with evangelists who are on a talk show, and you\u2019re sitting there waiting for the question to be asked by the secular interviewer, \u201cDo you <em>really<\/em> believe Jesus Christ is <em>the<\/em> way, <em>the <\/em>truth, and the life?\u00a0 Do you think that there is only His way to go to heaven?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is just a moment when everybody eases to the edges of their seats to go, \u201cWhat will this guy say?\u00a0 What will this evangelist do?\u00a0 Will he hunker on up to the counter and say, \u201cYou know Jesus said it, and I believe it?\u201d\u00a0 Will he back away, try to explain away, and try to have a more popular message that says, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 He\u2019s just a \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tway,\u201d or, \u201cYou know, I believe there are a lot of good ways to get there from here\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut Jesus said it, \u201cI am <em>the<\/em> way, <em>the<\/em> truth, <em>the<\/em> life.\u201d\u00a0 The same courage that it took Martin Luther to say, \u201cI\u2019ve got to stand right here on the truth.\u201d\u00a0 I think there are many times in our lives when we get asked questions around what Christ said\u2014when we just need to let it stand\u2014what He said as the truth.\u00a0 We need to embrace it, not back down from it; and like Martin Luther, \u201cHere I stand.\u00a0 I can do no other.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And train our kids to do the same.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, because it is going to be more and more unpopular to take even that stand.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I remember speaking at one of our <em>Weekend to Remember\u00ae <\/em>marriage getaways a number of years ago.\u00a0 I had just presented the claims of Christ in the Gospel, and a woman came up to me afterwards.\u00a0 She said, \u201cYou know, I was listening to you very carefully.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cIt sounded like you were saying that you think that Christianity is the only <em>legitimate<\/em> religion.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cI\u2019m a Jew.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cIs that what you were saying?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, that\u2019s a moment that gets a little uncomfortable because, obviously, here was a woman right in front of me who I didn\u2019t want to offend.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 You are not talking to a TV camera.\u00a0 You are talking to a human being, and this is what she believes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, I don\u2019t think your issue is really with me.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhen it comes right down to it, what you\u2019re going to have to grapple with, is the same thing I had to grapple with, and that is John 14:6\u201d\u2014the verse you just quoted\u2014\u201cwhich is, \u2018I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by Me.\u2019\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cJesus either said it, or He didn\u2019t.\u00a0 If He said it\u2014He either meant it, or He didn\u2019t.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cIf He said it, and He meant it, then, your issue is not with me, it is with Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 Well, she wasn\u2019t exactly sure what to do with that at that point.\u00a0 She said, \u201cI don\u2019t know that I agree with that.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cI understand that you may not agree with it, but you really have to grapple with that issue because I believe He said it; and I believe that it is true.\u00a0 I think everyone of us has to wrestle with that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, that was not a comfortable moment\u2014stuck with me.\u00a0 It is one of those things that you\u2019ll never forget, if you live through it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If it was left up to me, I\u2019d much rather take a popular approach\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014on subjects that\u2019s loved and liked by all, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would have liked to have said to that woman, \u201cYou know, you seem like a nice lady.\u00a0 I\u2019m <em>sure<\/em> God\u2019s going to have grace for you because you just seem pleasant.\u201d\u00a0 I can\u2019t say that!\u00a0 On what authority can I say that, right?\u00a0 None!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Based on how you feel about it?\u00a0 I mean, it\u2019s not a matter of feelings.\u00a0 It is back to Barbara\u2019s illustration of Shackleton going to Antarctica.\u00a0 The sextant was the guide, and you had to believe the readings on that instrument if you were going to make\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 if you wanted to survive.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014if you wanted to get to your destination\u2014not a matter of what feels good, what looks good.\u00a0 It is a matter of what is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 \u2014the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the truth.\u00a0 Now, here\u2019s the thing (moms, dads, grandparents\u2014listen to me):\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThe next generation of young people\u2014right now\u2014are in our homes.\u00a0 We\u2019re raising them.\u00a0 They are going to be sent out to a culture that does not embrace this truth.\u00a0 They are not going to embrace<em> the<\/em> truth.\u00a0 So, you\u2019ve got to prepare them to know how to do battle.\u00a0 You have to prepare them with convictions that can withstand the darkness of the day.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s why Barbara wrote this book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Read<\/em> these stories to your kids and listen to them yourself.\u00a0 Gain courage for your <em>own<\/em> faith in God and your <em>own<\/em> personal walk.\u00a0 We all need it!\u00a0 I mean, Barbara said that the ages for these books she\u2019s written here\u2014these devotionals for families\u2014is ages 5 through 18.\u00a0 Well, you know what?\u00a0 It\u2019s 5 through 95.\u00a0 Anybody who has got a heartbeat needs to hear great stories of faith, of courage, of gratitude\u2014people who have embraced the truth, no matter what it costs them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what, Bob?\u00a0 I <em>really<\/em> like the guest we\u2019ve had on the broadcast over the past week.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I saw you making eyes at her during the program.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just sitting back, going, \u201cMan, did I out-marry myself?!\u00a0 I really <em>love<\/em> this woman!\u00a0 Thirty-nine years; this is good stuff!\u00a0 She\u2019s not perfect but close.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Don\u2019t say that.\u00a0 truth is because it won\u2019t be a popular stand to take?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I think it involves being rejected by people, maybe <em>hated<\/em> by people, or worse.\u00a0 So, I think the easiest thing to do is to conform\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> \u2014is just to blend in with the masses and be a chameleon.\u00a0 We have far too many families today, unfortunately, that look a whole lot like their non-Christian counterpart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, certainly, as young people are going through adolescence, they are wrestling with their own sense of, \u201cWho am I?\u00a0 What\u2019s\u2014\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201c\u2014life all about?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In the midst of that, there are plenty of voices suggesting to you that this is where life is found or this is what truth is.\u00a0 You can see where a young person can get tossed to and fro.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think the junior high years, somewhere around grade seven, eight, even the ninth grade, can ultimately be the real testing of a young person\u2019s life.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think a lot of young people do real well with it.\u00a0 I think a lot of them cave in to the peer pressure.\u00a0 We have a friend who really saw her life transformed during that same age range.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason I know this story is because Crawford and Karen Loritts are very good friends of ours.\u00a0 Also, I know more of the story now because Barbara spent some time not long ago with Karen Loritts, on the phone, wanting to hear the whole story\u2014the rest of the story\u2014of how she ultimately turned to the truth as a young person.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about a new resource that Barbara has created for families to teach the truth of Scripture to children today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You included Karen Loritts\u2019 story, Barbara, in a new devotional book that you\u2019ve put together called <em>Growing Together in Truth<\/em>.\u00a0 First of all, welcome back to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is the first time that I can remember that you\u2019ve included a story in one of your devotionals\u2014this is the third of these devotionals that you\u2019ve put together now\u2014but included a story of someone you know\u2014someone who is a contemporary of yours\u2014 who is alive.\u00a0 You really brought us a very fresh example of what truth looks like in someone\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I\u2019m trying to include at least one person in each of these\u2014someone who has lived it out and is <em>still<\/em> living\u2014that we can look to.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just all about people who have lived in the past\u2014so, therefore, all of this truth and all of these principles died with them\u2014but it\u2019s still relevant today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted to tell Karen\u2019s story because Karen grew up in an incredibly difficult situation as a child\u2014that she survived; that she thrived; that she, today, has a healthy marriage; that she is a godly woman; and that she has great kids and grandkids\u2014is a testimony to the power of the truth, the power of Scripture in a person\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, we had dinner with Crawford and Karen one time (this was years ago).\u00a0 We were good friends, but I had never really heard Karen\u2019s story of where she\u2019d come from.\u00a0 She\u2019d grown up in the, really, the <em>hood <\/em>in Philadelphia.\u00a0 My admiration for her as a human being just went through the ceiling because she overcame <em>enormous<\/em> adversity in what she faced day in and day out.\u00a0 I just thought, \u201cWhat an <em>incredible<\/em> story of redemption!\u201d\u00a0 God did redeem\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014Karen\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, Karen, as a little girl, was lost.\u00a0 That\u2019s where I start her story, talking about how\u2014here\u2019s a little girl at seven years old who is lost.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that she didn\u2019t know where she lived.\u00a0 She knew how to get to her apartment, but she was lost in this sea of craziness.\u00a0 She lived in a concrete, public housing project area of Philadelphia.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHer mother wasn\u2019t married.\u00a0 Her mother worked odd hours, and Karen was in charge of her little brother.\u00a0 She and her little brother would come home from school.\u00a0 They would climb the stairs to that apartment.\u00a0 They would step over broken bottles.\u00a0 They would step over drunks in the hall.\u00a0 They would smell the smell of urine as they went up the stairs to their apartment.\u00a0 They would go into the apartment and close the door.\u00a0 There would be no one to welcome them because her mother was working.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, here\u2019s this little girl, who at seven years old, is as lost as she can be.\u00a0 She has no one giving her direction; but God, in His great mercy, introduced Karen to some people who <em>did know<\/em> Him.\u00a0 When she was a few years older, she met this couple who belonged to a church down the road.\u00a0 Her mom actually encouraged her to go.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, she grabbed her little brother by the hand, and they\u2019d walk down the street to this church.\u00a0 They\u2019d go to Sunday school.\u00a0 Sometimes, they\u2019d get something to eat, which was really appealing to them as kids.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, a few years later, she, her mom, and her little brother moved to another place; and she started attending another church.\u00a0 As Karen tells it, she says, \u201cI started going to the <em>white<\/em> church,\u201d because Karen is African-American.\u00a0 The pastor of the white church was actually from Russia.\u00a0 He was Ukrainian.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, Karen grew up in those years, those middle-elementary years, going to this little white church in the suburbs.\u00a0 There she heard about Jesus.\u00a0 She heard that Jesus loved her.\u00a0 She heard that Jesus had a plan for her life.\u00a0 She kept hearing it over, and over, and over.\u00a0 The contrast between this Ukrainian man and his wife\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014pastoring this little white church in the suburbs of Philadelphia and the things that they were teaching her out of the Bible about Jesus and that Jesus had a plan for her life\u2014and what she saw at home with her mom and her extended family, who\u2014they never got along, and they were always changing where they lived.\u00a0 There was so much instability in her home life; but in that church, she felt secure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe found a sense of stability.\u00a0 It drew her, and it kept drawing her until she was in her junior high years, as you mentioned a minute ago.\u00a0 She decided that this was what she wanted.\u00a0 This life that she was learning about in this church was what she wanted.\u00a0 She gave her life to Christ.\u00a0 She said, \u201cI want to do life God\u2019s way, not the way I was raised.\u00a0 I want stability, not instability.\u00a0 I want peace, not constant disruption.\u201d\u00a0 So, she chose to give her life to Christ when she was in junior high.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was a turning point, and you make the connection in Karen\u2019s story with another story of the exploration of Antarctica.\u00a0 Karen really stepped from darkness into light in that moment, and you look back to those Antarctic explorers who were trapped in darkness years ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 They were lost in utter darkness, too, as Karen was; only, Karen\u2019s was a spiritual darkness, and theirs was a physical darkness.\u00a0 In both stories, in Karen\u2019s life and in Ernest Shackleton\u2019s voyage to the South Pole, both of them found their way out of darkness by following the truth.\u00a0 Karen, by following the truth of Scripture; and Shackleton, by following the truth of the sextant, which was the instrument they used to calculate their distance and the direction they needed to take.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was because they believed the truth of that instrument\u2014that the instrument wasn\u2019t lying to them\u2014even though it didn\u2019t feel like they were going in the right direction.\u00a0 The instrument took them to safety.\u00a0 They were rescued, and they lived.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKaren found the same thing to be true because she banked on the Word of God.\u00a0 She said, \u201cThis is the truth.\u00a0 This is right, and I\u2019m going to give my life to it.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to follow what it says.\u201d\u00a0 Because she gave her life to Christ and because she followed the truth of Scripture, God took her out of that unstable life of darkness that she was born into and redeemed her and gave her a life of light and hope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This chapter in the book is subtitled \u201cTruth Shows the Path<em>.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 That\u2019s what you\u2019re talking about here\u2014that the truth leads the way.\u00a0 It guides the way.\u00a0 It is like a flashlight for our paths.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what Scripture is.\u00a0 If you think about today, we may not be growing up in a ghetto in Philly, but we\u2019ve all got enough cultural darkness around us today clouding our direction\u2014how we\u2019re living and the choices we\u2019re making.\u00a0 There is pornography.\u00a0 There are choices on the internet.\u00a0 There is adultery.\u00a0 There is the rejection of the absolute standards of Scripture.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat you are trying to do in this devotional book for families is give parents a tool to tell stories\u2014to be able to drive truth into the hearts of young people so that, as they encounter darkness <em>around<\/em> their lives, they\u2019re going to know their way.\u00a0 They\u2019re not going to be lost like Karen was, but they\u2019re going to know the direction to go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 The key is\u2014is once you know the truth\u2014is that you believe it even when it is dark, even when it\u2019s confusing, or even when everybody else around you is saying, \u201cGo this way.\u201d\u00a0 If the truth is your guide and you\u2019ve banked your life on it, you will go with what the truth says, even if it doesn\u2019t feel right, because we know that God\u2019s Word never changes\u2014that He will <em>not <\/em>lead us astray; and we can count on the truth of His Word, no matter what.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you tell the story in your book, in your devotional, <em>Growing Together in Truth, <\/em>about a somewhat famous, historical figure who was pursuing truth by trying to find it in religion and, ultimately, found it in the Scriptures.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis was interesting.\u00a0 I was reading something the other day that was talking about the fact that the word religion, if you take it apart, the word\u2014the \u201cligion\u201d side of that\u2014the \u201cligion\u201d is the same word that we use for ligaments, those connective tissues that hold things together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Interesting.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Religion is an attempt on our part to reconnect with God\u2014re-connecting.\u00a0 Of course, Christianity is not our attempt to connect with God, but it\u2019s God connecting with us through Christ.\u00a0 It\u2019s\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the other way around.\u00a0 Here was a young monk pursuing God, trying to connect with Him by obedience\u2014who, ultimately, found truth.\u00a0 God connected with him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, this is a story of a young man who had a very dramatic occurrence early in his life.\u00a0 He was caught in a thunderstorm with a friend.\u00a0 They were both riding back to the university on horse.\u00a0 His friend was struck by lightning and was killed.\u00a0 It left this other young man badly shaken (as happens to all of us) if we\u2019re in a car wreck and someone else in the car is very seriously injured, and we aren\u2019t.\u00a0 It rattles our faith because we say, \u201cWhy him and not me?\u201d\u00a0 I mean, we hear those stories all the time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, this young man was saying the same thing, \u201cWhy him and not me?\u00a0 Why was I left, and he was taken?\u201d\u00a0 He began to try to find the answers in religion.\u00a0 He was studying religion; and he thought, \u201cThis is the answer.\u00a0 This is how I find out what God means, and what God wants from me,\u201d and all that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the process of studying his religion, he was reading the Bible.\u00a0 He came across the verse in Romans that says, \u201cThe just shall live by faith.\u201d\u00a0 When he read that, it was as if a light bulb went on in a dark room.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe hear that phrase a lot, but it\u2019s <em>really <\/em>true.\u00a0 It was very true for him because he thought he had to earn his way to God.\u00a0 So many of us think that; we feel that way.\u00a0 We think, \u201cIf I just do enough right, God will be pleased with me, and He will accept me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat this young man discovered in that verse is that it had absolutely <em>nothing <\/em>to do with his performance\u2014absolutely <em>nothing<\/em> to do with how good he was, or how smart he was, or how <em>anything<\/em> he was.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or how religious.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or how religious, exactly.\u00a0 It was by faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In fact, his <em>pursuit<\/em> of trying to live right\u2014he had just realized every day how far short he fell.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was casting him further and further into despair.\u00a0 I imagine some of our listeners by this point know who it is we\u2019ve been talking about.\u00a0 This is the account of Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in the 1500\u2019s, who, ultimately, faced a showdown later in life where the issue of truth was paramount.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was in the church at the time that he made this discovery.\u00a0 He began to teach others what he had discovered in the Bible; but there was a practice in the church that was common in those days, where people were paying money to the priest\u2014to the church\u2014for their forgiveness of their sins.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMartin Luther is looking at this going, \u201cWait a minute!\u00a0 The Bible doesn\u2019t teach that.\u00a0 There\u2019s <em>nothing<\/em> in the Bible about paying money to have your sins forgiven.\u00a0 What\u2019s with this?\u201d\u00a0 As he watched that, the conviction in his heart grew.\u00a0 He finally thought, \u201cI\u2019ve got to say something about the truth.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, famously, Martin Luther wrote up everything that he believed about this practice and what he believed about being saved by faith alone\u2014he nailed it to the door of the church in Wittenberg on October 31, 1517.\u00a0 It caused such a stir that, not long after that, he was asked to renounce what he believed\u2014what he had written\u2014what he stood for.\u00a0 He very famously said before that body of church leaders, \u201cHere I stand.\u00a0 I can do no other.\u00a0 I will not recant.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe truth that he discovered in the Scripture changed his life.\u00a0 So, therefore, he was teaching others the truth that had changed his life, but it cost him.\u00a0 He had to stand up and defend that before those who didn\u2019t believe it.\u00a0 Often that happens when we believe the truth.\u00a0 We are going to have to stand up and defend it at some point with those who don\u2019t believe it.\u00a0 It makes them feel very uncomfortable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 His life was on the line.\u00a0 This was not simply a case of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014\u201cWell, I\u2019m leaving the church.\u201d\u00a0 This was a case of, \u201cWould he be charged with heresy, and would he be put to death\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, would he be killed?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014as a result of espousing what others thought was heresy?\u201d\u00a0 That moment you describe\u2014where he says, \u201cHere I stand.\u00a0 I can do nothing else.\u00a0 God, help me,\u201d is a powerful moment in all of history.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It really is.\u00a0 For some reason (I\u2019m not sure why), I\u2019m just having a flashback of a number of TV programs with evangelists who are on a talk show, and you\u2019re sitting there waiting for the question to be asked by the secular interviewer, \u201cDo you <em>really<\/em> believe Jesus Christ is <em>the<\/em> way, <em>the <\/em>truth, and the life?\u00a0 Do you think that there is only His way to go to heaven?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is just a moment when everybody eases to the edges of their seats to go, \u201cWhat will this guy say?\u00a0 What will this evangelist do?\u00a0 Will he hunker on up to the counter and say, \u201cYou know Jesus said it, and I believe it?\u201d\u00a0 Will he back away, try to explain away, and try to have a more popular message that says, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 He\u2019s just a \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tway,\u201d or, \u201cYou know, I believe there are a lot of good ways to get there from here\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut Jesus said it, \u201cI am <em>the<\/em> way, <em>the<\/em> truth, <em>the<\/em> life.\u201d\u00a0 The same courage that it took Martin Luther to say, \u201cI\u2019ve got to stand right here on the truth.\u201d\u00a0 I think there are many times in our lives when we get asked questions around what Christ said\u2014when we just need to let it stand\u2014what He said as the truth.\u00a0 We need to embrace it, not back down from it; and like Martin Luther, \u201cHere I stand.\u00a0 I can do no other.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And train our kids to do the same.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, because it is going to be more and more unpopular to take even that stand.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I remember speaking at one of our <em>Weekend to Remember\u00ae <\/em>marriage getaways a number of years ago.\u00a0 I had just presented the claims of Christ in the Gospel, and a woman came up to me afterwards.\u00a0 She said, \u201cYou know, I was listening to you very carefully.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cIt sounded like you were saying that you think that Christianity is the only <em>legitimate<\/em> religion.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cI\u2019m a Jew.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cIs that what you were saying?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, that\u2019s a moment that gets a little uncomfortable because, obviously, here was a woman right in front of me who I didn\u2019t want to offend.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 You are not talking to a TV camera.\u00a0 You are talking to a human being, and this is what she believes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, I don\u2019t think your issue is really with me.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhen it comes right down to it, what you\u2019re going to have to grapple with, is the same thing I had to grapple with, and that is John 14:6\u201d\u2014the verse you just quoted\u2014\u201cwhich is, \u2018I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but by Me.\u2019\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cJesus either said it, or He didn\u2019t.\u00a0 If He said it\u2014He either meant it, or He didn\u2019t.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cIf He said it, and He meant it, then, your issue is not with me, it is with Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 Well, she wasn\u2019t exactly sure what to do with that at that point.\u00a0 She said, \u201cI don\u2019t know that I agree with that.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cI understand that you may not agree with it, but you really have to grapple with that issue because I believe He said it; and I believe that it is true.\u00a0 I think everyone of us has to wrestle with that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, that was not a comfortable moment\u2014stuck with me.\u00a0 It is one of those things that you\u2019ll never forget, if you live through it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If it was left up to me, I\u2019d much rather take a popular approach\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014on subjects that\u2019s loved and liked by all, but\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would have liked to have said to that woman, \u201cYou know, you seem like a nice lady.\u00a0 I\u2019m <em>sure<\/em> God\u2019s going to have grace for you because you just seem pleasant.\u201d\u00a0 I can\u2019t say that!\u00a0 On what authority can I say that, right?\u00a0 None!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Based on how you feel about it?\u00a0 I mean, it\u2019s not a matter of feelings.\u00a0 It is back to Barbara\u2019s illustration of Shackleton going to Antarctica.\u00a0 The sextant was the guide, and you had to believe the readings on that instrument if you were going to make\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 if you wanted to survive.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014if you wanted to get to your destination\u2014not a matter of what feels good, what looks good.\u00a0 It is a matter of what is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 \u2014the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the truth.\u00a0 Now, here\u2019s the thing (moms, dads, grandparents\u2014listen to me):\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cThe next generation of young people\u2014right now\u2014are in our homes.\u00a0 We\u2019re raising them.\u00a0 They are going to be sent out to a culture that does not embrace this truth.\u00a0 They are not going to embrace<em> the<\/em> truth.\u00a0 So, you\u2019ve got to prepare them to know how to do battle.\u00a0 You have to prepare them with convictions that can withstand the darkness of the day.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s why Barbara wrote this book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Read<\/em> these stories to your kids and listen to them yourself.\u00a0 Gain courage for your <em>own<\/em> faith in God and your <em>own<\/em> personal walk.\u00a0 We all need it!\u00a0 I mean, Barbara said that the ages for these books she\u2019s written here\u2014these devotionals for families\u2014is ages 5 through 18.\u00a0 Well, you know what?\u00a0 It\u2019s 5 through 95.\u00a0 Anybody who has got a heartbeat needs to hear great stories of faith, of courage, of gratitude\u2014people who have embraced the truth, no matter what it costs them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what, Bob?\u00a0 I <em>really<\/em> like the guest we\u2019ve had on the broadcast over the past week.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I saw you making eyes at her during the
