I don\u2019t want him to miss a word of it,\u201d I\u2019ll tear it out and\u00a0 say, \u201cHere, you\u2019ve got to read this.\u201d\u00a0 But if it\u2019s just the gist of the story that\u2019s really great, sometimes I\u2019ll just say, \u201dHere\u2019s what it\u2019s about,\u201d and I\u2019ll just tell him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I more often than not will say to MaryAnn, \u201cCome here.\u00a0 Let me read this to you.\u201d\u00a0 Now I could just as easily hand it to her, but there\u2019s something about <em>me<\/em> saying it to her that it\u2019s like\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You just like hearing yourself read!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Maybe that\u2019s what it is!\u00a0 I\u2019ve been doing radio for so long that just the sound of my voice\u2014\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s comforting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s sad.\u00a0 Alright, so we begin with that confession here at the beginning of today\u2019s program.\u00a0 I was thinking about that because you\u2019ve been working on a project\u2014a series, over the last couple of years\u2014a series of devotionals for families to use.\u00a0 The idea is that a mom or a dad would read these to the kids; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We want to talk about the latest of those.\u00a0 But before we do that, many of our listeners may have been alerted to the fact that you\u2019ve had some recent health challenges.\u00a0 We ought to get an update on how you\u2019re doing.\u00a0 First of all, do you want to tell us about your diagnosis several months ago?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I just went in for a routine mammogram; and it was discovered that I had a small calcification, which I have since learned can sometimes indicate cancer cells.\u00a0 So we went through the biopsy, and then we did the lumpectomy.\u00a0 There were cancer cells there; but, gratefully for us, it was not invasive.\u00a0 It was contained and did not spread.\u00a0 It\u2019s all good news.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we went through that process and then for extra insurance did a six-week course of radiation just to make sure that there wasn\u2019t a stray cell floating around somewhere.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And everything came through okay on that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, it did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And both Barbara and I are aware of both friends and many of our listeners who have received\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Much worse\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, in terms of news about breast cancer.\u00a0 It you\u2019re going to have breast cancer, the kind Barbara had was the very best to get.\u00a0 It was non-invasive.\u00a0 It was a zero on a four-point scale.\u00a0 Honestly, with the radiation, her prognosis is very, very good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Even with that, though, to receive the diagnosis\u2014to have the doctor say, \u201cWell, we did find...\u201d\u00a0 I mean, as soon as you hear that, was it hard emotionally to process the news?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, initially, it was just such a surprise.\u00a0 We don\u2019t have a history, or I don\u2019t have a history of cancer on my side of the family at all.\u00a0 So I really have sort of felt like that wasn\u2019t going to be my issue.\u00a0 There might be other issues, but I just figured that wasn\u2019t going to be one of them.\u00a0 So I was really unprepared, not that anybody ever is prepared; but it was quite a surprise to get that information.\u00a0 Even though they said, \u201cIt\u2019s small, and it\u2019s contained, and it\u2019s noninvasive,\u201d it\u2019s just hard to hear the word, \u201ccancer.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Uh-huh.\u00a0 Was it hard for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, initially, it was difficult to watch Barbara get sidelined emotionally and then have to weigh all that from a physical standpoint.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there fear?\u00a0 Because I know you\u2019ve been through some health issues with Barbara before and wondered what the future held for that.\u00a0 Was there any fear for you with this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was.\u00a0 When we got the news we were in southern California, visiting with some friends.\u00a0 We just kind of swallowed hard and kind of faced the future together.\u00a0 Barbara\u2019s faced other health issues in our 39 years of marriage together\u2014a heart problem, where her heart would race to over 300 beats a minute\u2014one time for over eight hours.\u00a0 We got that fixed, and now we\u2019ve moved on to a new challenge.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what made this kind of extra difficult to process was that within ten minutes of arriving home from meeting with the surgeon, our home was hit by a tornado.\u00a0 It was kind of symbolic in a way.\u00a0 I mean, 27 trees uprooted, snapped in half.\u00a0 A tornado passed right over our house and went on to become an F-4 tornado and nearly destroying a small town in Arkansas.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we really felt like her life\u2014our lives\u2014were <em>spared <\/em>that week.\u00a0 Part of the process, Bob, was realizing our mortality but, at the same time, the sovereign care of God to take some people while He leaves others.\u00a0 If He leaves you as clearly as He has\u2014both in Barbara\u2019s case with breast cancer, and in our case with a tornado\u2014it is clear He\u2019s got a job for us to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s <em>still <\/em>work that\u2019s assigned to us and our lives are meant to be lived circumspectly and obediently before God to fulfill the mission that He has for us both as a woman, wife, mother and grandmother and as a man, husband, father, and a grandfather.\u00a0 We\u2019re just acutely aware of that these days.\u00a0 We want to continue to profess Christ and fulfill our mission here as long as God gives us the privilege.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it was in the middle of that diagnosis and the radiation treatment you were receiving that you were working on what is now the third in a series of devotional books that you\u2019ve written for parents to share with their children.\u00a0 Each of these devotional books is built around a particular character theme; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara<\/strong>:\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 One of the things that motivated me to do these books for families is my own experience.\u00a0 When we were raising our kids, we had a ten-year age span between the youngest and the oldest.\u00a0 When the youngest was five, the oldest was 15.\u00a0 Finding some material that we could use with a five-year-old that also worked with a 15-year-old was impossible.\u00a0 There just wasn\u2019t anything on the market.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember the few things that I did find when the youngest was a little bit past five\u2014the one thing that seemed to connect with my kids the best were stories.\u00a0 The stories that I found that I could read to my kids that gave them inspiration, that provided role models for them, that helped them think differently about life; and it wasn\u2019t just coming from Mom and Dad.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I\u2019m really enjoying writing these because the stories that I\u2019m finding are\u2014they\u2019re inspirational to me, they\u2019re challenging, they\u2019re hopeful, and they all focus on Christ.\u00a0 I think that they will be very helpful to families as they try to inspire their kids to live for the Kingdom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, it\u2019s been fun to watch Barbara work on these books because she\u2019ll say, \u201cCome in here!\u201d\u00a0 And speaking of whether she reads something to me or hands something to me to read, she\u2019ll say, \u201cLet me tell you about this story.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe thing that\u2019s really fun in seeing her light up about this, is that it\u2019s not just the story of heroism; but it\u2019s the story and the human life she\u2019s reading about illustrates great principles of faith and of character that she wants to pass on to the next generation, and not merely our children and grandchildren, but she wants to see\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara\u2019s really got a heart that parents are equipped to be able to tell these stories, and then talk about faith in just a normal way with their children, and interact around it, and call parents to be instructing their children, \u201cHow to live the Christian life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We did an interview years ago with a college professor and author who\u2019d written a book called <em>Why Johnny Can\u2019t Tell Right from Wrong<\/em>.\u00a0 I\u2019ve never forgotten.\u00a0 He said one of the ways that you transmit morality to the next generation is through story and history.\u00a0 Kids <em>learn<\/em> how they ought to act by hearing great stories.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and learning it from history, form historical examples.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 I think\u2014and all of us are that way.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think it\u2019s just children.\u00a0 I think adults are too.\u00a0 We think, \u201cOh, I remember hearing about this person; and if they can remain strong in the mist of what they faced, I can, too, because my situation is not as hard.\u201d\u00a0 There\u2019s something about having those role models, even if they\u2019re not people that we know personally, even if it\u2019s someone who lived 100 years ago or 500 years ago.\u00a0 It really gives us courage to keep going in the present tense by knowing the story of their life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And by targeting a particular character quality, like you started off dealing with gratitude, you gave parents a tool there that they could either use seasonally around Thanksgiving or they could use it at any point in the life of a family when that issue emerges.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(Laughter)\u00a0 Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You think there\u2019s a need for that in families?\u00a0 There was in ours!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that book\u2019s probably been used multiple occasions with a lot of children.\u00a0 And then after, you followed up the gratitude book with one on courage.\u00a0 I was real encouraged when I saw that <em>World<\/em> magazine had highlighted that book.\u00a0 They gave it a very favorable review and seemed to catch the idea of what you were talking about for how these books could be used with families.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was really encouraged by that, too.\u00a0 Because, as you said, the idea is that these would be stories that could be read over and over.\u00a0 So if you\u2019re going through a season in your family\u2019s life, where your children are particularly gripey, you pull that book off the shelf and, \u201cLet\u2019s read about Corrie ten Boom again and how they gave thanks in every situation, including a flea-ridden barracks.\u201d\u00a0 It will take your kids\u2019 focus on what\u2019s so terrible about <em>my<\/em> situation and remind them, \u201cOh, it\u2019s not that bad.\u00a0 I need to give thanks.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I\u2019ve seen, Bob, is as Barbara\u2019s emphasized this, I\u2019ve become aware of how all of us have stories where God has worked in our lives and we\u2019ve done things that were courageous or we\u2019ve demonstrated an attitude of gratitude in the midst of tough circumstances.\u00a0 We have stories that we can pass on to our children and our grandchildren.\u00a0 But we\u2019ve become such a fast-paced culture\u2014just moving from one thing to the next and everything in front of a screen\u2014to stop, and ponder, and say, \u201cWhat stories do I have of God working in my life that I can transmit, share, and tell about what God did for me, and for Barbara and I together as a couple, and for our family?\u00a0 What can we pass on to our kids?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI honestly believe the internet is stealing away from us some of these moments of being able to just sit by the fire and tell a good story; and tell a story of your own humanity, and your own failure, and how God redeemed the situation in spite of you.\u00a0 It\u2019s all a part of, I think, of how we pass on our faith to our children and our grandchildren.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have seen the list of character qualities that you\u2019d love to address in this ongoing series of books, and it\u2019s a long list.\u00a0 When you got done with gratitude and with courage and you looked at that list, what bubbled to the top and why?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 The one that bubbled to the top next for me was to collect a bunch of stories that talk about truth.\u00a0 For several reasons I felt like truth was an important one for me to write about and for families to read about.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think truth is being challenged in our culture probably as never before.\u00a0 Relativism is the mode of the day.\u00a0 \u201cBelieve whatever you want to believe, and it doesn\u2019t really matter.\u00a0 If that\u2019s what you believe that\u2019s good for you.\u201d\u00a0 I think that parents don\u2019t really know how to combat that with their children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I wanted to find some stories that talked about the importance of knowing the truth and the importance of acting on the truth because I think our kids are going to need to face those issues.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know what\u2019s around the corner.\u00a0\u00a0 We don\u2019t know what life will be like in 10 or 15 years.\u00a0 Our kids may need to literally stand on the truth for their very lives.\u00a0 If we, as parents, aren\u2019t imparting the value of knowing the truth\u2014absolute truth to our children\u2014they may not be able to stand strong when the situation calls for it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re talking about something that goes beyond just teaching your kids not to tell lies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re talking about your children understanding that there are certain things that are immutable, that are not determined by cultural tides, but are true from the beginning to the end, whether we embrace those as true or not; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 I think that understanding that there is a bedrock of truth to the universe that God put in place, and that\u2019s found in His Word, and how we teach that to our kids is really, really important.\u00a0 So, when you read stories of people whose lives were changed by the truth or who acted on the truth and God intervened in remarkable ways, it gives credence to knowing it and you go, \u201cOh.\u00a0 There really is value in knowing the truth.\u201d\u00a0 It can change lives.\u00a0 It can change the course of a person\u2019s life forever.\u00a0 I think that will help parents have those conversations with their kids as they\u2019re growing up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, one of the things that has been fascinating as I\u2019ve watched Barbara grapple over which one of these to write on next\u2014she really does have a long list.\u00a0 I think potentially there could be one for every week of the year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, wow!\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have a lot of faith in you, Honey!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, more than I have in myself!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But she laid aside some of the gritty issues that a family faces\u2014like writing about forgiveness, or generosity, or love, and she chose truth.\u00a0 I just want our audience to pause for a moment and think about how important this is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen God <em>formed<\/em> a nation, what did He start with?\u00a0 The Ten Commandments.\u00a0 He started with absolute true commandments from God to man.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because forming a nation of imperfect people, you needed a standard.\u00a0 You need something to call them to.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to tell you.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s no different today in building a family.\u00a0 You think about what families need today.\u00a0 They\u2019re getting all kinds of false messages, <em>lies <\/em>coming from TV, from the internet, from music, from peers.\u00a0 If there\u2019s ever been a time when families needed to return to the truth, it\u2019s today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m thinking of John, Chapter 1, which is speaking of Jesus.\u00a0 Verse 14 says, \u201cAnd the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only son from the Father\u2026\u201d (Now listen to this\u2014full of two things):\u00a0 \u201cFull of grace and truth.\u201d\u00a0 Really<em>, truth<\/em> makes <em>grace<\/em> necessary because there\u2019s a standard.\u00a0 We are going to fail\u2014so, we need grace.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut before you can talk about receiving grace and forgiveness, you first of all have to understand the truth of Scripture, the truth of God\u2019s standards, the truth about God.\u00a0 To the average parent who is listening right now, this is a <em>life and death<\/em> issue for your family\u2014to teach them and train them in truth, and to tell them <em>great<\/em> stories\u2014<em>great<\/em> stories of people who embraced the truth, and it cost them.\u00a0 It cost them their lives.\u00a0 It may have cost them their families; but they still stood strong on behalf of the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 And many of them were set free because they banked their lives on the truth.\u00a0 So it not only cost them, but it set them free.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s the great hope of these stories.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We live in a culture today that does value grace.\u00a0 You\u2019re rewarded if you\u2019re full of grace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No doubt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But if you\u2019re full of truth\u2014if you say, you know, \u201cThis is\u2014I believe this is true, absolutely,\u201d you will be punished for that.\u00a0 We have to address that with children and say, \u201cYou can expect persecution, tribulation, for embracing the truth.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was thinking about a couple of quotes.\u00a0 One was from\u2014I think it was A. W. Tozer who said, \u201cWe need in our day today,\u201d what he called, \u201ca gentle dogmatism.\u201d\u00a0 It is that grace and truth.\u00a0 It\u2019s that standing firm, but with a winsomeness and a smile that\u2019s not harsh, that\u2019s not angry, but that says, \u201cI can\u2019t compromise.\u00a0 Here I stand.\u00a0 I can do no other.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s why stories are so beneficial because it allows us to tell the story and to relate it from another person\u2019s life.\u00a0 It\u2019s not Mom and Dad with their finger pointed in the kid\u2019s face.\u00a0 Not that we don\u2019t have to do that from time to time; but the stories allow us to talk about truth, and it\u2019s very graceful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The other quote I was thinking of came from C.S. Lewis, who, on July 19, 1940, was listening to the radio with a friend of his\u2014and they were listening together to Hitler give a speech.\u00a0 Lewis later reflected in a letter to his brother.\u00a0 He said, \u201cListening to him, I was reminded that you can become persuaded that things you know are lies...you can become persuaded that they are true if somebody just says it with enough force.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe went on to write the book, <em>The Screwtape Letters,<\/em> based on having heard Hitler and starting to feel like, \u201cMaybe, that\u2019s right.\u201d\u00a0 He knew it wasn\u2019t, but just hearing him say it\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, we live in a culture today where we\u2019re hearing stuff said over and over again with force and passion; and people are just going, \u201cWell, maybe, that\u2019s true.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, what you just said is <em>so important<\/em> today as moms and dads are raising children.\u00a0 How are they going to be able to spot a lie?\u00a0 If they don\u2019t know the Bible and don\u2019t know the truth about God and the truth of Scripture, then they can be <em>seduced<\/em>.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 <em>We<\/em> can be seduced!\u00a0 C. S. Lewis was feeling the <em>tug<\/em> of a lie.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo really what Barbara\u2019s put together here is just another tool that FamilyLife wants to produce to put in the \u201ctoolbox\u201d of a parent, that they can pull out and they can say, \u201cYou know, I want to shape my son\u2019s and my daughter\u2019s convictions.\u00a0 I want to help them not only know what\u2019s right and wrong but have the <em>courage<\/em> to choose what\u2019s right in the face of a lie and in the face of what\u2019s wrong,\u201d\u2014and, then, to cheer your children on.\u00a0 Boy, there\u2019s no better way to do that than to read a great story about someone who was 11or 12 years of age and who made an unimaginable heroic stand on truth.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the stories that Barbara tells in this book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s been interesting, too, because this is the third book in your <em>Growing Together<\/em> series.\u00a0 People who have gotten the other books have, I know, come back to you and said, \u201cWe really appreciated the book on gratitude or the book on courage that you wrote.\u00a0 We read the stories to our children; and they really resonated with those stories, and remembered them, and brought them up months later.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt in the newspaper that you want to share with your spouse, do you say, \u201cListen to this,\u201d and then read it to your spouse?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Occasionally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or do yousay, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to read this,\u201d and hand it to them.\u00a0 Which do you do most often?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 Let\u2019s ask her.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a great idea!\u00a0 She is right here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m the one that\u2019s giving you things to read all the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you do that?\u00a0 Do you give him the stuff to read or do you try to read it out loud to him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 It depends.\u00a0 If it\u2019s something that I just think, \u201cIt\u2019s so great; I don\u2019t want him to miss a word of it,\u201d I\u2019ll tear it out and\u00a0 say, \u201cHere, you\u2019ve got to read this.\u201d\u00a0 But if it\u2019s just the gist of the story that\u2019s really great, sometimes I\u2019ll just say, \u201dHere\u2019s what it\u2019s about,\u201d and I\u2019ll just tell him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I more often than not will say to MaryAnn, \u201cCome here.\u00a0 Let me read this to you.\u201d\u00a0 Now I could just as easily hand it to her, but there\u2019s something about <em>me<\/em> saying it to her that it\u2019s like\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You just like hearing yourself read!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Maybe that\u2019s what it is!\u00a0 I\u2019ve been doing radio for so long that just the sound of my voice\u2014\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s comforting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s sad.\u00a0 Alright, so we begin with that confession here at the beginning of today\u2019s program.\u00a0 I was thinking about that because you\u2019ve been working on a project\u2014a series, over the last couple of years\u2014a series of devotionals for families to use.\u00a0 The idea is that a mom or a dad would read these to the kids; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We want to talk about the latest of those.\u00a0 But before we do that, many of our listeners may have been alerted to the fact that you\u2019ve had some recent health challenges.\u00a0 We ought to get an update on how you\u2019re doing.\u00a0 First of all, do you want to tell us about your diagnosis several months ago?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I just went in for a routine mammogram; and it was discovered that I had a small calcification, which I have since learned can sometimes indicate cancer cells.\u00a0 So we went through the biopsy, and then we did the lumpectomy.\u00a0 There were cancer cells there; but, gratefully for us, it was not invasive.\u00a0 It was contained and did not spread.\u00a0 It\u2019s all good news.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we went through that process and then for extra insurance did a six-week course of radiation just to make sure that there wasn\u2019t a stray cell floating around somewhere.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And everything came through okay on that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, it did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And both Barbara and I are aware of both friends and many of our listeners who have received\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Much worse\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, in terms of news about breast cancer.\u00a0 It you\u2019re going to have breast cancer, the kind Barbara had was the very best to get.\u00a0 It was non-invasive.\u00a0 It was a zero on a four-point scale.\u00a0 Honestly, with the radiation, her prognosis is very, very good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Even with that, though, to receive the diagnosis\u2014to have the doctor say, \u201cWell, we did find...\u201d\u00a0 I mean, as soon as you hear that, was it hard emotionally to process the news?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, initially, it was just such a surprise.\u00a0 We don\u2019t have a history, or I don\u2019t have a history of cancer on my side of the family at all.\u00a0 So I really have sort of felt like that wasn\u2019t going to be my issue.\u00a0 There might be other issues, but I just figured that wasn\u2019t going to be one of them.\u00a0 So I was really unprepared, not that anybody ever is prepared; but it was quite a surprise to get that information.\u00a0 Even though they said, \u201cIt\u2019s small, and it\u2019s contained, and it\u2019s noninvasive,\u201d it\u2019s just hard to hear the word, \u201ccancer.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Uh-huh.\u00a0 Was it hard for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, initially, it was difficult to watch Barbara get sidelined emotionally and then have to weigh all that from a physical standpoint.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there fear?\u00a0 Because I know you\u2019ve been through some health issues with Barbara before and wondered what the future held for that.\u00a0 Was there any fear for you with this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was.\u00a0 When we got the news we were in southern California, visiting with some friends.\u00a0 We just kind of swallowed hard and kind of faced the future together.\u00a0 Barbara\u2019s faced other health issues in our 39 years of marriage together\u2014a heart problem, where her heart would race to over 300 beats a minute\u2014one time for over eight hours.\u00a0 We got that fixed, and now we\u2019ve moved on to a new challenge.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what made this kind of extra difficult to process was that within ten minutes of arriving home from meeting with the surgeon, our home was hit by a tornado.\u00a0 It was kind of symbolic in a way.\u00a0 I mean, 27 trees uprooted, snapped in half.\u00a0 A tornado passed right over our house and went on to become an F-4 tornado and nearly destroying a small town in Arkansas.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, we really felt like her life\u2014our lives\u2014were <em>spared <\/em>that week.\u00a0 Part of the process, Bob, was realizing our mortality but, at the same time, the sovereign care of God to take some people while He leaves others.\u00a0 If He leaves you as clearly as He has\u2014both in Barbara\u2019s case with breast cancer, and in our case with a tornado\u2014it is clear He\u2019s got a job for us to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s <em>still <\/em>work that\u2019s assigned to us and our lives are meant to be lived circumspectly and obediently before God to fulfill the mission that He has for us both as a woman, wife, mother and grandmother and as a man, husband, father, and a grandfather.\u00a0 We\u2019re just acutely aware of that these days.\u00a0 We want to continue to profess Christ and fulfill our mission here as long as God gives us the privilege.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it was in the middle of that diagnosis and the radiation treatment you were receiving that you were working on what is now the third in a series of devotional books that you\u2019ve written for parents to share with their children.\u00a0 Each of these devotional books is built around a particular character theme; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara<\/strong>:\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 One of the things that motivated me to do these books for families is my own experience.\u00a0 When we were raising our kids, we had a ten-year age span between the youngest and the oldest.\u00a0 When the youngest was five, the oldest was 15.\u00a0 Finding some material that we could use with a five-year-old that also worked with a 15-year-old was impossible.\u00a0 There just wasn\u2019t anything on the market.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember the few things that I did find when the youngest was a little bit past five\u2014the one thing that seemed to connect with my kids the best were stories.\u00a0 The stories that I found that I could read to my kids that gave them inspiration, that provided role models for them, that helped them think differently about life; and it wasn\u2019t just coming from Mom and Dad.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I\u2019m really enjoying writing these because the stories that I\u2019m finding are\u2014they\u2019re inspirational to me, they\u2019re challenging, they\u2019re hopeful, and they all focus on Christ.\u00a0 I think that they will be very helpful to families as they try to inspire their kids to live for the Kingdom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, it\u2019s been fun to watch Barbara work on these books because she\u2019ll say, \u201cCome in here!\u201d\u00a0 And speaking of whether she reads something to me or hands something to me to read, she\u2019ll say, \u201cLet me tell you about this story.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe thing that\u2019s really fun in seeing her light up about this, is that it\u2019s not just the story of heroism; but it\u2019s the story and the human life she\u2019s reading about illustrates great principles of faith and of character that she wants to pass on to the next generation, and not merely our children and grandchildren, but she wants to see\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara\u2019s really got a heart that parents are equipped to be able to tell these stories, and then talk about faith in just a normal way with their children, and interact around it, and call parents to be instructing their children, \u201cHow to live the Christian life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We did an interview years ago with a college professor and author who\u2019d written a book called <em>Why Johnny Can\u2019t Tell Right from Wrong<\/em>.\u00a0 I\u2019ve never forgotten.\u00a0 He said one of the ways that you transmit morality to the next generation is through story and history.\u00a0 Kids <em>learn<\/em> how they ought to act by hearing great stories.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and learning it from history, form historical examples.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 I think\u2014and all of us are that way.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think it\u2019s just children.\u00a0 I think adults are too.\u00a0 We think, \u201cOh, I remember hearing about this person; and if they can remain strong in the mist of what they faced, I can, too, because my situation is not as hard.\u201d\u00a0 There\u2019s something about having those role models, even if they\u2019re not people that we know personally, even if it\u2019s someone who lived 100 years ago or 500 years ago.\u00a0 It really gives us courage to keep going in the present tense by knowing the story of their life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And by targeting a particular character quality, like you started off dealing with gratitude, you gave parents a tool there that they could either use seasonally around Thanksgiving or they could use it at any point in the life of a family when that issue emerges.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(Laughter)\u00a0 Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You think there\u2019s a need for that in families?\u00a0 There was in ours!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that book\u2019s probably been used multiple occasions with a lot of children.\u00a0 And then after, you followed up the gratitude book with one on courage.\u00a0 I was real encouraged when I saw that <em>World<\/em> magazine had highlighted that book.\u00a0 They gave it a very favorable review and seemed to catch the idea of what you were talking about for how these books could be used with families.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was really encouraged by that, too.\u00a0 Because, as you said, the idea is that these would be stories that could be read over and over.\u00a0 So if you\u2019re going through a season in your family\u2019s life, where your children are particularly gripey, you pull that book off the shelf and, \u201cLet\u2019s read about Corrie ten Boom again and how they gave thanks in every situation, including a flea-ridden barracks.\u201d\u00a0 It will take your kids\u2019 focus on what\u2019s so terrible about <em>my<\/em> situation and remind them, \u201cOh, it\u2019s not that bad.\u00a0 I need to give thanks.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I\u2019ve seen, Bob, is as Barbara\u2019s emphasized this, I\u2019ve become aware of how all of us have stories where God has worked in our lives and we\u2019ve done things that were courageous or we\u2019ve demonstrated an attitude of gratitude in the midst of tough circumstances.\u00a0 We have stories that we can pass on to our children and our grandchildren.\u00a0 But we\u2019ve become such a fast-paced culture\u2014just moving from one thing to the next and everything in front of a screen\u2014to stop, and ponder, and say, \u201cWhat stories do I have of God working in my life that I can transmit, share, and tell about what God did for me, and for Barbara and I together as a couple, and for our family?\u00a0 What can we pass on to our kids?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI honestly believe the internet is stealing away from us some of these moments of being able to just sit by the fire and tell a good story; and tell a story of your own humanity, and your own failure, and how God redeemed the situation in spite of you.\u00a0 It\u2019s all a part of, I think, of how we pass on our faith to our children and our grandchildren.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have seen the list of character qualities that you\u2019d love to address in this ongoing series of books, and it\u2019s a long list.\u00a0 When you got done with gratitude and with courage and you looked at that list, what bubbled to the top and why?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 The one that bubbled to the top next for me was to collect a bunch of stories that talk about truth.\u00a0 For several reasons I felt like truth was an important one for me to write about and for families to read about.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think truth is being challenged in our culture probably as never before.\u00a0 Relativism is the mode of the day.\u00a0 \u201cBelieve whatever you want to believe, and it doesn\u2019t really matter.\u00a0 If that\u2019s what you believe that\u2019s good for you.\u201d\u00a0 I think that parents don\u2019t really know how to combat that with their children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I wanted to find some stories that talked about the importance of knowing the truth and the importance of acting on the truth because I think our kids are going to need to face those issues.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know what\u2019s around the corner.\u00a0\u00a0 We don\u2019t know what life will be like in 10 or 15 years.\u00a0 Our kids may need to literally stand on the truth for their very lives.\u00a0 If we, as parents, aren\u2019t imparting the value of knowing the truth\u2014absolute truth to our children\u2014they may not be able to stand strong when the situation calls for it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re talking about something that goes beyond just teaching your kids not to tell lies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re talking about your children understanding that there are certain things that are immutable, that are not determined by cultural tides, but are true from the beginning to the end, whether we embrace those as true or not; right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 I think that understanding that there is a bedrock of truth to the universe that God put in place, and that\u2019s found in His Word, and how we teach that to our kids is really, really important.\u00a0 So, when you read stories of people whose lives were changed by the truth or who acted on the truth and God intervened in remarkable ways, it gives credence to knowing it and you go, \u201cOh.\u00a0 There really is value in knowing the truth.\u201d\u00a0 It can change lives.\u00a0 It can change the course of a person\u2019s life forever.\u00a0 I think that will help parents have those conversations with their kids as they\u2019re growing up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, one of the things that has been fascinating as I\u2019ve watched Barbara grapple over which one of these to write on next\u2014she really does have a long list.\u00a0 I think potentially there could be one for every week of the year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, wow!\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have a lot of faith in you, Honey!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, more than I have in myself!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But she laid aside some of the gritty issues that a family faces\u2014like writing about forgiveness, or generosity, or love, and she chose truth.\u00a0 I just want our audience to pause for a moment and think about how important this is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen God <em>formed<\/em> a nation, what did He start with?\u00a0 The Ten Commandments.\u00a0 He started with absolute true commandments from God to man.\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because forming a nation of imperfect people, you needed a standard.\u00a0 You need something to call them to.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to tell you.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s no different today in building a family.\u00a0 You think about what families need today.\u00a0 They\u2019re getting all kinds of false messages, <em>lies <\/em>coming from TV, from the internet, from music, from peers.\u00a0 If there\u2019s ever been a time when families needed to return to the truth, it\u2019s today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m thinking of John, Chapter 1, which is speaking of Jesus.\u00a0 Verse 14 says, \u201cAnd the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only son from the Father\u2026\u201d (Now listen to this\u2014full of two things):\u00a0 \u201cFull of grace and truth.\u201d\u00a0 Really<em>, truth<\/em> makes <em>grace<\/em> necessary because there\u2019s a standard.\u00a0 We are going to fail\u2014so, we need grace.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut before you can talk about receiving grace and forgiveness, you first of all have to understand the truth of Scripture, the truth of God\u2019s standards, the truth about God.\u00a0 To the average parent who is listening right now, this is a <em>life and death<\/em> issue for your family\u2014to teach them and train them in truth, and to tell them <em>great<\/em> stories\u2014<em>great<\/em> stories of people who embraced the truth, and it cost them.\u00a0 It cost them their lives.\u00a0 It may have cost them their families; but they still stood strong on behalf of the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 And many of them were set free because they banked their lives on the truth.\u00a0 So it not only cost them, but it set them free.\u00a0 I think that\u2019s the great hope of these stories.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We live in a culture today that does value grace.\u00a0 You\u2019re rewarded if you\u2019re full of grace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No doubt.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But if you\u2019re full of truth\u2014if you say, you know, \u201cThis is\u2014I believe this is true, absolutely,\u201d you will be punished for that.\u00a0 We have to address that with children and say, \u201cYou can expect persecution, tribulation, for embracing the truth.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was thinking about a couple of quotes.\u00a0 One was from\u2014I think it was A. W. Tozer who said, \u201cWe need in our day today,\u201d what he called, \u201ca gentle dogmatism.\u201d\u00a0 It is that grace and truth.\u00a0 It\u2019s that standing firm, but with a winsomeness and a smile that\u2019s not harsh, that\u2019s not angry, but that says, \u201cI can\u2019t compromise.\u00a0 Here I stand.\u00a0 I can do no other.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Barbara:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s why stories are so beneficial because it allows us to tell the story and to relate it from another person\u2019s life.\u00a0 It\u2019s not Mom and Dad with their finger pointed in the kid\u2019s face.\u00a0 Not that we don\u2019t have to do that from time to time; but the stories allow us to talk about truth, and it\u2019s very graceful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The other quote I was thinking of came from C.S. Lewis, who, on July 19, 1940, was listening to the radio with a friend of his\u2014and they were listening together to Hitler give a speech.\u00a0 Lewis later reflected in a letter to his brother.\u00a0 He said, \u201cListening to him, I was reminded that you can become persuaded that things you know are lies...you can become persuaded that they are true if somebody just says it with enough force.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe went on to write the book, <em>The Screwtape Letters,<\/em> based on having heard Hitler and starting to feel like, \u201cMaybe, that\u2019s right.\u201d\u00a0 He knew it wasn\u2019t, but just hearing him say it\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, we live in a culture today where we\u2019re hearing stuff said over and over again with force and passion; and people are just going, \u201cWell, maybe, that\u2019s true.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, what you just said is <em>so important<\/em> today as moms and dads are raising children.\u00a0 How are they going to be able to spot a lie?\u00a0 If they don\u2019t know the Bible and don\u2019t know the truth about God and the truth of Scripture, then they can be <em>seduced<\/em>.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 <em>We<\/em> can be seduced!\u00a0 C. S. Lewis was feeling the <em>tug<\/em> of a lie.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo really what Barbara\u2019s put together here is just another tool that FamilyLife wants to produce to put in the \u201ctoolbox\u201d of a parent, that they can pull out and they can say, \u201cYou know, I want to shape my son\u2019s and my daughter\u2019s convictions.\u00a0 I want to help them not only know what\u2019s right and wrong but have the <em>courage<\/em> to choose what\u2019s right in the face of a lie and in the face of what\u2019s wrong,\u201d\u2014and, then, to cheer your children on.\u00a0 Boy, there\u2019s no better way to do that than to read a great story about someone who was 11or 12 years of age and who made an unimaginable heroic stand on truth.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the stories that Barbara tells in this book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s been interesting, too, because this is the third book in your <em>Growing Together<\/em> series.\u00a0 People who have gotten the other books have, I know, come back to you and said, \u201cWe really appreciated the book on gratitude or the book on courage that you wrote.\u00a0 We read the stories to our children;
