we are glad to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen<\/strong>:\u00a0 Good morning!\u00a0 (Applause)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> And I am just curious\u2014I know a lot of our staff is Sherwood fans, Sherwood Pictures fans.\u00a0 How many of you have seen the first movie, <em>Flywheel<\/em>?\u00a0 Clap your hands<strong>.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(Applause)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, wow!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s great.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>How many of you saw the second movie, <em>Facing the Giants<\/em>?\u00a0 (Applause)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>How many of you saw <em>Fireproof<\/em>?\u00a0 (Applause and whistles)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was watching because you get fired if you didn\u2019t see <em>Fireproof.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That was a required meeting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 That was, yes.\u00a0 Give us one-sentence, kind of a tweet, about what each of those movies was about.\u00a0 Can you do that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Well, in short, <em>Fly Wheel<\/em> is about Lordship:\u00a0 Jay Austin, the car dealer, that turns his life over to the Lord and does things God\u2019s way.\u00a0 At first, things get worse\u2014kind of a \u201cdetox\u201d\u2014and then the Lord rebuilds his life, his family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Facing the Giants,<\/em> obviously, is about faith and how we face whatever giant is a part of our lives:\u00a0 fear, failure, some addiction\u2014and how Grant Taylor, as a coach, a failing coach, turns his whole philosophy over to the Lord as he coaches these boys.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then <em>Fireproof<\/em>, obviously, is focused on marriage.\u00a0 \u201cHow can a man love his wife like Christ loved the Church?\u201d\u2014which is no easy task\u2014but with the Lord\u2019s help, he can love her the way he is supposed to.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, of course, <em>Courageous<\/em>, by its very name, \u201cHow can we walk in courageous faith and do what God calls us to do?\u201d\u2014specifically as fathers and men\u2014but of course, it is an attribute for women as well.\u00a0 So, we are excited about the theme of all of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, you guys co-wrote and co-produced all these movies and there was a little piece in your bio that said as you grew up as boys, you both were actors and you were producing all these movies.\u00a0 Can you let us in on the greatest one you produced for your family that is not ready for primetime?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen<\/strong>:\u00a0 When Alex was in high school, instead of doing a health paper, he shot \u201cThe Better Take a Shower Body Odor Hour.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 That\u2019s true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hold that.\u00a0 Say that again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen<\/strong>:\u00a0 \u201cThe Better Take a Shower Body Odor Hour.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 That was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 That exists somewhere, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That exists.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Sadly.\u00a0 I got an \u201cA\u201d on it, though.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 You guys, I think are tapping into something that God is up to in our country.\u00a0 It seems like all of a sudden, in the last few months, there have been a number of books, videos, and now this movie coming up calling men to be courageous.\u00a0 You guys really believe that this is the battleground for the soul of our nation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen<\/strong>:\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 When God calls Joshua to leadership, he hears seven times, actually Moses said it a few times before he died, then Joshua hears it over and over again\u2014the same phrase, \u201cBe strong and courageous.\u201d\u00a0 We see right now\u2014there is a huge vacuum of leadership in our homes.\u00a0 The men are not leading; their wives are not leading their kids.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we prayed through, \u201cHow can we call men out?\u201d\u00a0 There is something inside of us as men that longs to be strong and courageous.\u00a0 If you look at all the epic movies, the <em>Brave Hearts<\/em> and the <em>Gladiators, <\/em>there is always this speech of a man standing up in front of other men; and he is calling them to courage.\u00a0 We wanted to do that\u2014like Joshua experienced.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Take us into the process because I know when you were done with <em>Fireproof<\/em>, then the next question was, \u201cOkay, what\u2019s next?\u201d\u00a0 How do you determine, \u201cWhat\u2019s next?\u201d after a successful movie?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy the way, <em>Fireproof<\/em> was the highest-grossing independent film in the year it came out.\u00a0 I mean, all of the independent films from <em>Sun Dance<\/em> and every place else came out.\u00a0 <em>Fireproof<\/em> beat them all at the Box Office.\u00a0 You come off of a success like that\u2014\u00a0 (Applause)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You come off of a success like that\u2014How do you decide what\u2019s next?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Great question.\u00a0 For us, we have learned the difference between a good idea and a \u201cGod idea.\u201d\u00a0 We feel like we got great ideas all the time; but what we do is:\u00a0 We go through what we call a \u201cseason of prayer.\u201d\u00a0 We will pray on a continual basis, \u201cGod, what do You want us to do?\u00a0 We ask You to open the doors You want us to walk through, You would shut the doors you don\u2019t want us to walk through.\u00a0 Give us the counsel; direct our hearts.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUsually, at the end of that season, which sometimes is a year-long between films, God makes it very clear.\u00a0 It is almost like He douses us with the theme, the plot, the ideas, the creativity, and the humor.\u00a0 He does it in a very brief window at the end of the season of prayer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we have learned is, \u201cGod loves to be sought.\u201d\u00a0 He loves it when we chase after him.\u00a0 We say, \u201cWe want your ideas God.\u201d\u00a0 When you do that and you are diligent with that, He is pleased and He will reward you with that direction at the very end.\u00a0 So far, when we followed his direction, it's worked.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The sub-title of the movie is \u201cHonor Begins at Home.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love that; and instead of going directly to talk about the movie, I thought about you guys and I thought about the shooting, the intensity, all that\u2019s wrapped up in that.\u00a0 Was there a time, Alex, in the midst of you starring in this movie\u2014trying to remember all your lines, the heat, everything going on\u2014when you went home to your six children and you said, \u201cIt's time to be a courageous at home,\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex<\/strong>:\u00a0 Constantly through the shoot.\u00a0 Stephen and I joke about the fact that working on this movie and the book, <em>Resolution for Men<\/em>, was like self-surgery.\u00a0 In many ways, we feel under-qualified because, like most men, we want to do what God calls us to do, and when we are not seeking Him or we are not obedient to Him, we usually don\u2019t do all that He has called us to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaking this movie, I remember being out\u2014there is a scene at the end of the movie\u2014it is a climactic scene where this is a shootout.\u00a0 When we were shooting that scene\u2014it took us a week to shoot that scene, it was between 110 and 114 degrees\u2014and when we are out there, there was no shade where we were shooting.\u00a0 I remember being totally exhausted and going home and feeling like all I had was leftovers for my family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, most men operate that way.\u00a0 They give their best to their job and to their friendships or their hobbies.\u00a0 They give their families the leftovers.\u00a0 We cannot exist that way.\u00a0 Now, when we are shooting a movie, that\u2019s only a brief season of shooting a move; but I was reminded, \u201cLord, I have to have Your energy, Your strength and Your wisdom to know how to do what You have called me to do and still give my family my best and my children my best because whatever I am giving them, they will emulate that as they get older.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>As you zeroed in on the theme for this movie\u2014and I remember hearing you guys had come back from a time of prayer with the pastoral staff at Sherwood Church\u2014and the only news we were getting was that the movie wouldn\u2019t start with an \u201cF\u201d this time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><em>Fly Wheel, Facing the Giants, Fireproof<\/em>\u2014this one was going to start with a new letter.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Breaking new territory!\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 As you zeroed in and said, \u201cWe really believe God is calling us to speak to men and to call men to being men,\u201d\u2014once you had that big concept, what were the sub-points that you zeroed in on and you said, \u201cThese are the things we want to be the takeaways from this movie.\u00a0 Here is what we think God wants to say to the men of America,\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen<\/strong>:\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 One of the concepts that kind of was birthed out of that was this idea for a resolution.\u00a0 At the end of the book of Joshua, Joshua stands up in front of the nation of Israel and he says, \u201cYou can choose who you are going to serve; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 He threw down the gauntlet and said, \u201cThis is where I am standing.\u201d\u00a0 He was resolved in his spiritual leadership.\u00a0 We wanted that to happen; so we knew there was going to be some kind of resolve, a resolution moment, somewhere in the middle of the movie.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe other thing is, Alex and I are so indebted to our father because he was a chain-breaker in our family.\u00a0 His father and grandfather were wild\u2014alcoholism, immorality\u2014those things were in their past.\u00a0 Our dad surrendered his life to Christ; and he said, \u201cThe buck stops here.\u201d He was the one who said, \u201cAs for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe wanted that to happen in men\u2019s lives.\u00a0 We wanted them to experience what we have\u2014this next generation of children.\u00a0 We wanted men to say, \u201cAs for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cHow do we bring them to that place?\u201d was part of that journey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex<\/strong>:\u00a0 Can I add to that?\u00a0 You see in the movie this scene where these men are taking this resolution.\u00a0 We desire, and pray, and hope that that idea, at a grassroots level attached to nothing else, catches on with all of the churches because\u2014if you think about it\u2014when you and I stood before our family and friends to get married, we made a vow in God\u2019s sight and then our family and friends\u2019 sight.\u00a0 But when a man becomes a dad, what do we do as a culture?\u00a0 We don\u2019t do anything.\u00a0 We throw a shower for the mom and the baby.\u00a0 We don\u2019t do anything for the dad; but that is a milestone in his life, and it\u2019s unbelievably a point of accountability in his life.\u00a0 We said, \u201cWhen a father becomes a dad, we need to do something in our culture that illustrates to him the importance of this role that he has.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe did this resolution, and it's done with respect.\u00a0 You know, they dress up just as if they were dressing up to go to a wedding; and he says this resolution.\u00a0 At the end of the day, we are hoping that men form accountability groups and that they take that role seriously across our nation\u2014again, attached to nothing\u2014no other product or anything.\u00a0 We have resources for them, but it's not attached to any of that.\u00a0 We want them to do that on their own.\u00a0 It would be phenomenal to see that kind of movement across our culture where men begin to step up and do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I think it\u2019s going to happen.\u00a0 The movie is titled <em>Courageous.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>What is courage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 I believe courage is doing what is right when your feelings and your circumstances are contrary to it.\u00a0 Everything about you is saying, \u201cDon\u2019t move forward,\u201d and you chose to do what pleases the Lord and to do what you know to be right.\u00a0 Sometimes our feelings are so overwhelming\u2014fear can grip us and cripple us.\u00a0 I think the Lord calls us to still move forward in the face of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 All this week, we are going to be chatting with you guys about the movie; and again, it\u2019s starting this Friday night, September 30th.\u00a0 I am going to give you a shot on this question later on, Alex; but I want to come back to you because last night we had dinner together, and when I asked you this question, you were ready for me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn all of your life, Stephen, what is the most courageous thing you have ever done as a man?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen<\/strong>:\u00a0 I went through a season in my life of depression, where I was battling with the Lord.\u00a0 I was so overwhelmed that I felt like the God I was serving had abandoned me.\u00a0 In the midst of that, I came to the place where I chose to the cling to the Lord when I felt like He was my enemy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was very difficult during that time, but my dad sent me something; and he said, \u201cThe greatest test of faith is when you feel like God has abandoned you.\u00a0 Will you cling to Him then?\u201d\u00a0 Job did that.\u00a0 He said, \u201cThough God slay me, yet will I trust in Him.\u201d\u00a0 When you feel like God is against you and He is turning on you\u2014you know, we look in Scripture and He has promised us He will never leave us nor forsake us, but He will allow seasons of our lives when He is silent or He backs away.\u00a0 That is our test of faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s easy to have faith in the Lord when He is showing up, and He is providing, and He is involved in your life; but when you feel like He is a million miles away and He doesn\u2019t care about you, you have to cling to Him then.\u00a0 Jesus was so loyal to the Father, you know, at the point of going to the cross.\u00a0 He said, \u201cNevertheless not my will, but Yours be done,\u201d and, \u201cMy God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?\u201d We hear\u2014we know He said that on the cross; but a few moments later, \u201cInto Thy hands I commit My Spirit,\u201d to the same One that He felt like was forsaking Him.\u00a0 I just tell people, when I look back, I don\u2019t know anything that was more difficult than that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you believe that the man God uses is first broken?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen<\/strong>:\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Before he ends up becoming a vessel that is fit to be used, whether in his home, at church, in the community.\u00a0 It\u2019s that relationship with God and his commitment to Jesus Christ that makes a man a real man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 I was reading this past week in Luke 22, where Jesus tells Peter, \u201cSatan has demanded you\u2014to sift you like wheat.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 And then Peter says, \u201cWell, I will never let you down;\u201d and Jesus says, \u201cIn the next few hours, you are going to let Me down.\u201d\u00a0 And Peter blows it; he fails.\u00a0 Yet, Jesus said, \u201cbut I will be praying for you.\u201d\u00a0 Peter fails, but he is restored by the Lord.\u00a0 Then you look at how God used Peter throughout that.\u00a0 It is not that we do it perfectly, but that God restores us and in that time of sifting, God does a work in on our own hearts that prepares us for the next season.\u00a0 Doesn\u2019t He?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 When He breaks us, He leaks out that pride.\u00a0 We all have it bottled up in us.\u00a0 He wants us to come to a place where we realize we are nothing and He is everything, but He has to crush us first to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 It was not a fore-drawn conclusion as you guys zeroed in on this theme that you would be the lead in this film, right.\u00a0 So how did you come to that conclusion as you were writing the film?\u00a0 Did you start to go, \u201cThat\u2019s me.\u00a0 I need to do this;\u201d or how did you determine?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen<\/strong>:\u00a0 Let me answer that question.\u00a0 With all the movies, we write the script and then we cast and we say, \u201cLord, we need You to send the people that will be the right fit for each one of these roles.\u201d\u00a0 We have learned that the blessing of the Lord is our greatest asset.\u00a0 If God takes His hand of blessing off of us, we might as well call the movie Ichabod, and go home, and quit making movies.\u00a0 We have talked about keeping God happy as a high priority.\u00a0 So when people come and they audition, we say, \u201cIs there anything in your life that would cause God to take His hand of blessing off this movie if we put you in it?\u201d\u00a0 There are people that have backed out because the fear of the Lord sets down on them when we ask that question; but after we cast, if we don\u2019t find what we are looking for, then we go to Alex and we say, \u201cYou have to fill this role.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Do you want to give your answer to that question?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex<\/strong>:\u00a0 Well, I think wisely\u2014you know, Stephen and I do write.\u00a0 I direct; Stephen produces each film, but I cannot cast myself.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of our rules.\u00a0 No one that is from Sherwood\u2014that is in the movie\u2014can cast themselves, even though we have a team of people that watches the auditions.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStephen is correct.\u00a0 When you ask that question, \u201cIs there anything in your life that would prevent God from blessing your work on this movie?\u201d, that\u2019s a very sobering question.\u00a0 Most people that we asked that to, especially those that were not from Sherwood, they kind of get this \u201cdeer in the headlights look;\u201d and they say, \u201cI have never been asked that before.\u201d\u00a0 Then they start thinking; and some people that are honest say, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, we are not looking for perfect people.\u00a0 There are no perfect people, but we are looking for people who realize the platform that they are being offered\u2014that in a sense, they become an ambassador by default.\u00a0 They are an ambassador for the message of this movie.\u00a0 So we don\u2019t want people who are only treating this as a gig or only treating this as, \u201cHey I just want to be in a movie.\u201d\u00a0 No!\u00a0 That\u2019s not what this is.\u00a0 You are responsible for the influence that you are given, and I am responsible for the influence and the platform that the Lord trusts me with.\u00a0 I take that very seriously.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we do these movies, I recognize that spiritual warfare goes along with that.\u00a0 Satan hates what we are doing:\u00a0 for marriage and the love there and <em>Fireproof <\/em>and calling dads to step up in leadership.\u00a0 He hates it.\u00a0 So we know there is going to be spiritual warfare.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not with joy that I embrace these things and say, \u201cHey, this is going to be a blast!\u201d\u00a0 I know that there are going to be things that are hurdles and speed bumps that go along with this; but, again, it\u2019s a very sobering but fulfilling thing if you chase God and do what He has called you to do and then watch what He does that blows you away.\u00a0 There is nothing more fulfilling for me than watch God do something phenomenal with these movies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 I think I know the answer to this question, but I\u2019ve seen a lot of sibling rivalry in my days, having raised six children; and I know how the Bible begins.\u00a0 There is a little sibling rivalry at the beginning.\u00a0 How do you two guys work together in writing a movie?\u00a0 I mean, \u201cHow do you keep egos in check?\u201d\u00a0 Has there ever been a breaking point?\u00a0 Who is the guy who calls the final shot if there is a disagreement, other than God, obviously?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we had a breakthrough in our teens when we were at a party.\u00a0 I was embarrassing Alex in front of his friends by talking about what he did at home in front of the mirror, flexing or something like that.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 He pulled me off to the side after that and he said, \u201cStephen, we have to be a team.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cWe have to make the decision that we are going to work together as a team.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI know the same things about you, too; but I don\u2019t share them.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI am trying to be a team player and make you look good in front of other people.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou need to do the same thing for me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe made the decision that we were going to start working together.\u00a0 God has planted us together consistently in ministry.\u00a0 Alex is my best male friend in the world.\u00a0 We love one another, but the Lord has bonded our hearts together.\u00a0 We serve one another.\u00a0 We hold each other accountable.\u00a0 We pray for one another.\u00a0 We laugh and cry together.\u00a0 God has done something unique there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex<\/strong>:\u00a0 I want to add to this, too. Stephen and I learned a valuable lesson from some other dear friends who are brothers in North Carolina.\u00a0 What we learned\u2014Stephen has some God-given strengths that I do not have and vice versa.\u00a0 So we work off a point-man mentality.\u00a0 I am more of a storyteller and Stephen is an exhorter.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we do the books\u2014<em>The Love Dare<\/em>, <em>The Resolution for Men\u2014<\/em>were primarily written by Stephen, even though we are both putting hours and hours into it.\u00a0 Stephen has a strength there.\u00a0 Therefore, he is the point-man when we are writing the books.\u00a0 And the movie\u2014I am a little bit more visual and it\u2019s no problem for me to come up with the angles and things like that.\u00a0 So I am the point-man as the director for the movie.\u00a0 Stephen supports me making the movies; I support him when both of us are writing the books.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Earlier, you quoted the last verse of the Old Testament\u2014Malachi Chapter 4, verse 6.\u00a0 It says, \u201cHe will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with the decree of utter destruction.\u201d\u00a0 One translation reads, \u201ca curse.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex<\/strong>:\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 As I said, in your movie, I wept because I say for\u2014not the first time, there have been some other great movies made that have done this\u2014but you guys have tapped into what I believe is the curse on America\u2014the lack of male leaders submitting to Jesus Christ and to push back against evil in their own lives, in their marriages, in their families, in their communities.\u00a0\u00a0 I sat there crying because I said, \u201cFinally, somebody is using the medium for a message, a message for the soul that doesn\u2019t destroy boys and girls, and children, marriages, and families; but someone is using the medium for the glory of God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen<\/strong>:\u00a0 Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I want to encourage our listeners not merely to go to the movie, not merely to take people to the movie, not merely to take your sons and your daughters and go experience the movie and to weep your way through it with us, but I want to encourage them to pray.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Pray that God\u2014His favor might fall upon men to start becoming the men that they know they need to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Well, this kind of goes without saying, but we ought to let folks know, \u201cIf you can go this weekend, this is the weekend to go.\u201d\u00a0 Opening weekend is huge in movies being released.\u00a0 Everybody will be looking and saying, \u201cHow did it do this weekend?\u201d and then the determination, \u201cDo we open more screens, more theaters for <em>Courageous<\/em>?\u201d\u00a0 So if there is any way you can go to a matinee on Saturday or after church on Sunday, this is the weekend to go.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou guys, as we said, have put together resources.\u00a0 You wrote a book called <em>The<\/em> <em>Resolution a part of our lives:\u00a0 fear, failure, some addiction\u2014and how Grant Taylor, as a coach, a failing coach, turns his whole philosophy over to the Lord as he coaches these boys.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then <em>Fireproof<\/em>, obviously, is focused on marriage.\u00a0 \u201cHow can a man love his wife like Christ loved the Church?\u201d\u2014which is no easy task\u2014but with the Lord\u2019s help, he can love her the way he is supposed to.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then, of course, <em>Courageous<\/em>, by its very name, \u201cHow can we walk in courageous faith and do what God calls us to do?\u201d\u2014specifically as fathers and men\u2014but of course, it is an attribute for women as well.\u00a0 So, we are excited about the theme of all of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, you guys co-wrote and co-produced all these movies and there was a little piece in your bio that said as you grew up as boys, you both were actors and you were producing all these movies.\u00a0 Can you let us in on the greatest one you produced for your family that is not ready for primetime?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen<\/strong>:\u00a0 When Alex was in high school, instead of doing a health paper, he shot \u201cThe Better Take a Shower Body Odor Hour.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 That\u2019s true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hold that.\u00a0 Say that again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen<\/strong>:\u00a0 \u201cThe Better Take a Shower Body Odor Hour.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 That was\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 That exists somewhere, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That exists.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Sadly.\u00a0 I got an \u201cA\u201d on it, though.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 You guys, I think are tapping into something that God is up to in our country.\u00a0 It seems like all of a sudden, in the last few months, there have been a number of books, videos, and now this movie coming up calling men to be courageous.\u00a0 You guys really believe that this is the battleground for the soul of our nation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen<\/strong>:\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 When God calls Joshua to leadership, he hears seven times, actually Moses said it a few times before he died, then Joshua hears it over and over again\u2014the same phrase, \u201cBe strong and courageous.\u201d\u00a0 We see right now\u2014there is a huge vacuum of leadership in our homes.\u00a0 The men are not leading; their wives are not leading their kids.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs we prayed through, \u201cHow can we call men out?\u201d\u00a0 There is something inside of us as men that longs to be strong and courageous.\u00a0 If you look at all the epic movies, the <em>Brave Hearts<\/em> and the <em>Gladiators, <\/em>there is always this speech of a man standing up in front of other men; and he is calling them to courage.\u00a0 We wanted to do that\u2014like Joshua experienced.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Take us into the process because I know when you were done with <em>Fireproof<\/em>, then the next question was, \u201cOkay, what\u2019s next?\u201d\u00a0 How do you determine, \u201cWhat\u2019s next?\u201d after a successful movie?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBy the way, <em>Fireproof<\/em> was the highest-grossing independent film in the year it came out.\u00a0 I mean, all of the independent films from <em>Sun Dance<\/em> and every place else came out.\u00a0 <em>Fireproof<\/em> beat them all at the Box Office.\u00a0 You come off of a success like that\u2014\u00a0 (Applause)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You come off of a success like that\u2014How do you decide what\u2019s next?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Great question.\u00a0 For us, we have learned the difference between a good idea and a \u201cGod idea.\u201d\u00a0 We feel like we got great ideas all the time; but what we do is:\u00a0 We go through what we call a \u201cseason of prayer.\u201d\u00a0 We will pray on a continual basis, \u201cGod, what do You want us to do?\u00a0 We ask You to open the doors You want us to walk through, You would shut the doors you don\u2019t want us to walk through.\u00a0 Give us the counsel; direct our hearts.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUsually, at the end of that season, which sometimes is a year-long between films, God makes it very clear.\u00a0 It is almost like He douses us with the theme, the plot, the ideas, the creativity, and the humor.\u00a0 He does it in a very brief window at the end of the season of prayer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we have learned is, \u201cGod loves to be sought.\u201d\u00a0 He loves it when we chase after him.\u00a0 We say, \u201cWe want your ideas God.\u201d\u00a0 When you do that and you are diligent with that, He is pleased and He will reward you with that direction at the very end.\u00a0 So far, when we followed his direction, it's worked.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The sub-title of the movie is \u201cHonor Begins at Home.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love that; and instead of going directly to talk about the movie, I thought about you guys and I thought about the shooting, the intensity, all that\u2019s wrapped up in that.\u00a0 Was there a time, Alex, in the midst of you starring in this movie\u2014trying to remember all your lines, the heat, everything going on\u2014when you went home to your six children and you said, \u201cIt's time to be a courageous at home,\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex<\/strong>:\u00a0 Constantly through the shoot.\u00a0 Stephen and I joke about the fact that working on this movie and the book, <em>Resolution for Men<\/em>, was like self-surgery.\u00a0 In many ways, we feel under-qualified because, like most men, we want to do what God calls us to do, and when we are not seeking Him or we are not obedient to Him, we usually don\u2019t do all that He has called us to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaking this movie, I remember being out\u2014there is a scene at the end of the movie\u2014it is a climactic scene where this is a shootout.\u00a0 When we were shooting that scene\u2014it took us a week to shoot that scene, it was between 110 and 114 degrees\u2014and when we are out there, there was no shade where we were shooting.\u00a0 I remember being totally exhausted and going home and feeling like all I had was leftovers for my family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, most men operate that way.\u00a0 They give their best to their job and to their friendships or their hobbies.\u00a0 They give their families the leftovers.\u00a0 We cannot exist that way.\u00a0 Now, when we are shooting a movie, that\u2019s only a brief season of shooting a move; but I was reminded, \u201cLord, I have to have Your energy, Your strength and Your wisdom to know how to do what You have called me to do and still give my family my best and my children my best because whatever I am giving them, they will emulate that as they get older.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>As you zeroed in on the theme for this movie\u2014and I remember hearing you guys had come back from a time of prayer with the pastoral staff at Sherwood Church\u2014and the only news we were getting was that the movie wouldn\u2019t start with an \u201cF\u201d this time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><em>Fly Wheel, Facing the Giants, Fireproof<\/em>\u2014this one was going to start with a new letter.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Breaking new territory!\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 As you zeroed in and said, \u201cWe really believe God is calling us to speak to men and to call men to being men,\u201d\u2014once you had that big concept, what were the sub-points that you zeroed in on and you said, \u201cThese are the things we want to be the takeaways from this movie.\u00a0 Here is what we think God wants to say to the men of America,\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen<\/strong>:\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 One of the concepts that kind of was birthed out of that was this idea for a resolution.\u00a0 At the end of the book of Joshua, Joshua stands up in front of the nation of Israel and he says, \u201cYou can choose who you are going to serve; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 He threw down the gauntlet and said, \u201cThis is where I am standing.\u201d\u00a0 He was resolved in his spiritual leadership.\u00a0 We wanted that to happen; so we knew there was going to be some kind of resolve, a resolution moment, somewhere in the middle of the movie.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe other thing is, Alex and I are so indebted to our father because he was a chain-breaker in our family.\u00a0 His father and grandfather were wild\u2014alcoholism, immorality\u2014those things were in their past.\u00a0 Our dad surrendered his life to Christ; and he said, \u201cThe buck stops here.\u201d He was the one who said, \u201cAs for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe wanted that to happen in men\u2019s lives.\u00a0 We wanted them to experience what we have\u2014this next generation of children.\u00a0 We wanted men to say, \u201cAs for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cHow do we bring them to that place?\u201d was part of that journey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex<\/strong>:\u00a0 Can I add to that?\u00a0 You see in the movie this scene where these men are taking this resolution.\u00a0 We desire, and pray, and hope that that idea, at a grassroots level attached to nothing else, catches on with all of the churches because\u2014if you think about it\u2014when you and I stood before our family and friends to get married, we made a vow in God\u2019s sight and then our family and friends\u2019 sight.\u00a0 But when a man becomes a dad, what do we do as a culture?\u00a0 We don\u2019t do anything.\u00a0 We throw a shower for the mom and the baby.\u00a0 We don\u2019t do anything for the dad; but that is a milestone in his life, and it\u2019s unbelievably a point of accountability in his life.\u00a0 We said, \u201cWhen a father becomes a dad, we need to do something in our culture that illustrates to him the importance of this role that he has.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe did this resolution, and it's done with respect.\u00a0 You know, they dress up just as if they were dressing up to go to a wedding; and he says this resolution.\u00a0 At the end of the day, we are hoping that men form accountability groups and that they take that role seriously across our nation\u2014again, attached to nothing\u2014no other product or anything.\u00a0 We have resources for them, but it's not attached to any of that.\u00a0 We want them to do that on their own.\u00a0 It would be phenomenal to see that kind of movement across our culture where men begin to step up and do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I think it\u2019s going to happen.\u00a0 The movie is titled <em>Courageous.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>What is courage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 I believe courage is doing what is right when your feelings and your circumstances are contrary to it.\u00a0 Everything about you is saying, \u201cDon\u2019t move forward,\u201d and you chose to do what pleases the Lord and to do what you know to be right.\u00a0 Sometimes our feelings are so overwhelming\u2014fear can grip us and cripple us.\u00a0 I think the Lord calls us to still move forward in the face of that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 All this week, we are going to be chatting with you guys about the movie; and again, it\u2019s starting this Friday night, September 30th.\u00a0 I am going to give you a shot on this question later on, Alex; but I want to come back to you because last night we had dinner together, and when I asked you this question, you were ready for me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn all of your life, Stephen, what is the most courageous thing you have ever done as a man?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen<\/strong>:\u00a0 I went through a season in my life of depression, where I was battling with the Lord.\u00a0 I was so overwhelmed that I felt like the God I was serving had abandoned me.\u00a0 In the midst of that, I came to the place where I chose to the cling to the Lord when I felt like He was my enemy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was very difficult during that time, but my dad sent me something; and he said, \u201cThe greatest test of faith is when you feel like God has abandoned you.\u00a0 Will you cling to Him then?\u201d\u00a0 Job did that.\u00a0 He said, \u201cThough God slay me, yet will I trust in Him.\u201d\u00a0 When you feel like God is against you and He is turning on you\u2014you know, we look in Scripture and He has promised us He will never leave us nor forsake us, but He will allow seasons of our lives when He is silent or He backs away.\u00a0 That is our test of faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s easy to have faith in the Lord when He is showing up, and He is providing, and He is involved in your life; but when you feel like He is a million miles away and He doesn\u2019t care about you, you have to cling to Him then.\u00a0 Jesus was so loyal to the Father, you know, at the point of going to the cross.\u00a0 He said, \u201cNevertheless not my will, but Yours be done,\u201d and, \u201cMy God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?\u201d We hear\u2014we know He said that on the cross; but a few moments later, \u201cInto Thy hands I commit My Spirit,\u201d to the same One that He felt like was forsaking Him.\u00a0 I just tell people, when I look back, I don\u2019t know anything that was more difficult than that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you believe that the man God uses is first broken?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen<\/strong>:\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Before he ends up becoming a vessel that is fit to be used, whether in his home, at church, in the community.\u00a0 It\u2019s that relationship with God and his commitment to Jesus Christ that makes a man a real man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 I was reading this past week in Luke 22, where Jesus tells Peter, \u201cSatan has demanded you\u2014to sift you like wheat.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 And then Peter says, \u201cWell, I will never let you down;\u201d and Jesus says, \u201cIn the next few hours, you are going to let Me down.\u201d\u00a0 And Peter blows it; he fails.\u00a0 Yet, Jesus said, \u201cbut I will be praying for you.\u201d\u00a0 Peter fails, but he is restored by the Lord.\u00a0 Then you look at how God used Peter throughout that.\u00a0 It is not that we do it perfectly, but that God restores us and in that time of sifting, God does a work in on our own hearts that prepares us for the next season.\u00a0 Doesn\u2019t He?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 When He breaks us, He leaks out that pride.\u00a0 We all have it bottled up in us.\u00a0 He wants us to come to a place where we realize we are nothing and He is everything, but He has to crush us first to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 It was not a fore-drawn conclusion as you guys zeroed in on this theme that you would be the lead in this film, right.\u00a0 So how did you come to that conclusion as you were writing the film?\u00a0 Did you start to go, \u201cThat\u2019s me.\u00a0 I need to do this;\u201d or how did you determine?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen<\/strong>:\u00a0 Let me answer that question.\u00a0 With all the movies, we write the script and then we cast and we say, \u201cLord, we need You to send the people that will be the right fit for each one of these roles.\u201d\u00a0 We have learned that the blessing of the Lord is our greatest asset.\u00a0 If God takes His hand of blessing off of us, we might as well call the movie Ichabod, and go home, and quit making movies.\u00a0 We have talked about keeping God happy as a high priority.\u00a0 So when people come and they audition, we say, \u201cIs there anything in your life that would cause God to take His hand of blessing off this movie if we put you in it?\u201d\u00a0 There are people that have backed out because the fear of the Lord sets down on them when we ask that question; but after we cast, if we don\u2019t find what we are looking for, then we go to Alex and we say, \u201cYou have to fill this role.\u201d\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Do you want to give your answer to that question?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex<\/strong>:\u00a0 Well, I think wisely\u2014you know, Stephen and I do write.\u00a0 I direct; Stephen produces each film, but I cannot cast myself.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of our rules.\u00a0 No one that is from Sherwood\u2014that is in the movie\u2014can cast themselves, even though we have a team of people that watches the auditions.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tStephen is correct.\u00a0 When you ask that question, \u201cIs there anything in your life that would prevent God from blessing your work on this movie?\u201d, that\u2019s a very sobering question.\u00a0 Most people that we asked that to, especially those that were not from Sherwood, they kind of get this \u201cdeer in the headlights look;\u201d and they say, \u201cI have never been asked that before.\u201d\u00a0 Then they start thinking; and some people that are honest say, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, we are not looking for perfect people.\u00a0 There are no perfect people, but we are looking for people who realize the platform that they are being offered\u2014that in a sense, they become an ambassador by default.\u00a0 They are an ambassador for the message of this movie.\u00a0 So we don\u2019t want people who are only treating this as a gig or only treating this as, \u201cHey I just want to be in a movie.\u201d\u00a0 No!\u00a0 That\u2019s not what this is.\u00a0 You are responsible for the influence that you are given, and I am responsible for the influence and the platform that the Lord trusts me with.\u00a0 I take that very seriously.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we do these movies, I recognize that spiritual warfare goes along with that.\u00a0 Satan hates what we are doing:\u00a0 for marriage and the love there and <em>Fireproof <\/em>and calling dads to step up in leadership.\u00a0 He hates it.\u00a0 So we know there is going to be spiritual warfare.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not with joy that I embrace these things and say, \u201cHey, this is going to be a blast!\u201d\u00a0 I know that there are going to be things that are hurdles and speed bumps that go along with this; but, again, it\u2019s a very sobering but fulfilling thing if you chase God and do what He has called you to do and then watch what He does that blows you away.\u00a0 There is nothing more fulfilling for me than watch God do something phenomenal with these movies.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 I think I know the answer to this question, but I\u2019ve seen a lot of sibling rivalry in my days, having raised six children; and I know how the Bible begins.\u00a0 There is a little sibling rivalry at the beginning.\u00a0 How do you two guys work together in writing a movie?\u00a0 I mean, \u201cHow do you keep egos in check?\u201d\u00a0 Has there ever been a breaking point?\u00a0 Who is the guy who calls the final shot if there is a disagreement, other than God, obviously?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we had a breakthrough in our teens when we were at a party.\u00a0 I was embarrassing Alex in front of his friends by talking about what he did at home in front of the mirror, flexing or something like that.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 He pulled me off to the side after that and he said, \u201cStephen, we have to be a team.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cWe have to make the decision that we are going to work together as a team.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI know the same things about you, too; but I don\u2019t share them.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI am trying to be a team player and make you look good in front of other people.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou need to do the same thing for me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe made the decision that we were going to start working together.\u00a0 God has planted us together consistently in ministry.\u00a0 Alex is my best male friend in the world.\u00a0 We love one another, but the Lord has bonded our hearts together.\u00a0 We serve one another.\u00a0 We hold each other accountable.\u00a0 We pray for one another.\u00a0 We laugh and cry together.\u00a0 God has done something unique there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex<\/strong>:\u00a0 I want to add to this, too. Stephen and I learned a valuable lesson from some other dear friends who are brothers in North Carolina.\u00a0 What we learned\u2014Stephen has some God-given strengths that I do not have and vice versa.\u00a0 So we work off a point-man mentality.\u00a0 I am more of a storyteller and Stephen is an exhorter.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we do the books\u2014<em>The Love Dare<\/em>, <em>The Resolution for Men\u2014<\/em>were primarily written by Stephen, even though we are both putting hours and hours into it.\u00a0 Stephen has a strength there.\u00a0 Therefore, he is the point-man when we are writing the books.\u00a0 And the movie\u2014I am a little bit more visual and it\u2019s no problem for me to come up with the angles and things like that.\u00a0 So I am the point-man as the director for the movie.\u00a0 Stephen supports me making the movies; I support him when both of us are writing the books.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Earlier, you quoted the last verse of the Old Testament\u2014Malachi Chapter 4, verse 6.\u00a0 It says, \u201cHe will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with the decree of utter destruction.\u201d\u00a0 One translation reads, \u201ca curse.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex<\/strong>:\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 As I said, in your movie, I wept because I say for\u2014not the first time, there have been some other great movies made that have done this\u2014but you guys have tapped into what I believe is the curse on America\u2014the lack of male leaders submitting to Jesus Christ and to push back against evil in their own lives, in their marriages, in their families, in their communities.\u00a0\u00a0 I sat there crying because I said, \u201cFinally, somebody is using the medium for a message, a message for the soul that doesn\u2019t destroy boys and girls, and children, marriages, and families; but someone is using the medium for the glory of God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Stephen<\/strong>:\u00a0 Amen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I want to encourage our listeners not merely to go to the movie, not merely to take people to the movie, not merely to take your sons and your daughters and go experience the movie and to weep your way through it with us, but I want to encourage them to pray.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Pray that God\u2014His favor might fall upon men to start becoming the men that they know they need to be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Well, this kind of goes without saying, but we ought to let folks know, \u201cIf you can go this weekend, this is the weekend to go.\u201d\u00a0 Opening weekend is huge in movies being released.\u00a0 Everybody will be looking and saying, \u201cHow did it do this weekend?\u201d and then the determination, \u201cDo we open more screens, more theaters for <em>Courageous<\/em>?\u201d\u00a0 So if there is any way you can go to a matinee on Saturday or after church on Sunday, this is the weekend to go.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou guys, as we said, have put together resources.\u00a0 You wrote a book called <em>The<\/em> <em>Resolution for Men.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>You teamed up with Priscilla Shirer to write a book, or actually, she wrote the book, <em>The Resolution for Women<\/em>.\u00a0 The resolution that\u2019s in the movie is also available as a framed piece that folks can bring to their home.\u00a0 We have some of these resources in our <em>FamilyLifeToday<\/em> Resource Center.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou can go online at FamilyLifeToday.com for more information about how to get these resources.\u00a0 It\u2019s FamilyLifeToday.com;
