Luther and Rebecca Elliss are the parents of 11 children.\u00a0 That\u2019s right\u201411 kids: some by birth, some by adoption.\u00a0 Recently, they got a call asking them if they would pray about another adoption opportunity.\u00a0 So, Luther said, \u201cThey\u2019re praying.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m also going, \u201cLord, what about somebody else?\u00a0 I know a lot of guys in the NFL would consider this.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if all the dads out there feel the same way\u2014like we fight it; we resist; but then we know this is what God is calling us to do, and it\u2019s amazing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnce you go through the process and once you bring those children into your home, you love them just the same.\u00a0 Each child brings something different, special to the home that I would never, ever be without.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is that we put together when you weren\u2019t around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I wound up doing an interview with a friend of ours, Brian Goins, about a new book that he\u2019d written called <em>Playing Hurt<\/em>.\u00a0 Actually, what we\u2019re going to hear today is a program that we recorded when I wasn\u2019t around.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I returned the favor.\u00a0 You had to leave\u2014the Orphans Summit in Louisville, Kentucky, last May.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We both had been there together and recorded a program.\u00a0 I had to go to a <em>Weekend to Remember\u00ae<\/em> in Houston; but you stayed around, and you got a chance to talk to a guy who played in the NFL, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 Luther Elliss and his wife Rebecca have quite a story about their love and care for orphans.\u00a0 There is a surprise near the end of this interview that our listening audience will want to make sure that they stay tuned for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This edition of <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> was actually part of the main program.\u00a0 It was recorded on the platform as a part of the events of the summit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There were 1,500 people in the audience.\u00a0 It really was kind of fun because a lot of radio listeners there that were attending the Orphan Care Summit.\u00a0 It\u2019s really a great \u201cwatering hole\u201d for people who care about orphans, foster care, adoption\u2014to be able to come together and share their common passion for how to go about helping this humanitarian crisis of gargantuan proportions.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne hundred forty million orphans around the world in need of the church of Jesus Christ reaching out to them.\u00a0 That\u2019s why really the Orphan Summit was created over seven years ago right here in FamilyLife\u2019s headquarters in Little Rock, Arkansas.\u00a0 It has now grown way beyond what we could house here.\u00a0 As a mentioned, there were a ton of folks in Louisville listening to me as I got a chance to interview the Ellisses.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They got to hear some great stories like this one with Luther and Rebecca Elliss.\u00a0 Here with a special live edition of <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> is Dennis Rainey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Recorded message):\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> before a live, studio audience.\u00a0 (Applause)\u00a0 A little larger than our normal studio audience because we\u2019re at the Summit, which is hosted by Christian Alliance for Orphans\u00ae.; more than 1,500 folks have gathered here from almost all 50 states, a number of countries from all over Europe, all over Asia, Africa, Latin America, South America, all talking about the needs of orphans.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to tell you a story that happened to me yesterday here at the Summit.\u00a0 An attorney came up to me from Seattle, Washington.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI have a vision to rally the churches of the state of Washington,\u201d which by the way, is the least populated in terms of churches of any state in the Union.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re going to call the church together.\u00a0 We already have cooperation from DHS and the state of Washington to begin to address the needs of foster care children.\u201d\u00a0 (Applause)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s just one story of hundreds of stories that are taking place.\u00a0 There are many more that came up to me and shared stories that are just as exciting.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, we have a guest with us, a pair of guests with us, that have got their own story of how they have addressed the needs of orphans and gone close to the needs of orphans.\u00a0 Luther and Rebecca Elliss join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Rebecca, Luther, welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Luther played professional football for ten years in the NFL: nine with the Detroit Lions, one with the Denver Broncos.\u00a0 He was picked twice to play in the Pro Bowl which means he was one mean defensive tackle.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if mean; but yes, I enjoyed the game.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you what, if I was a quarterback, I would not want to see you coming after me, brother.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRebecca was in college at the same time and competed on the University of Utah swim team, is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Where suddenly Luther became deeply interested in swimming.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, you finally married after a quick courtship and started having children, Rebecca.\u00a0 After you had three children, something very fascinating happened around the issue of the orphan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 We had been married a little over three or four years.\u00a0 We had three biological children.\u00a0 We were in Salt Lake City visiting family.\u00a0 I went and worked out with a friend.\u00a0 She had told\u2014the night before had seen a little boy, bi-racial little boy.\u00a0 He was in transitional care with a private adoption agency.\u00a0 The agency didn\u2019t have a family for him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe just shared that she felt like God showed her this child to share\u2014just find him a home.\u00a0 On the way home from the gym, I called Luther.\u00a0 He was like, \u201cOkay, let\u2019s find out what we need to do.\u201d\u00a0 We knew\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hold it!\u00a0 Hold it!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s not quite how it went.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 That\u2019s not quite how it went.\u00a0 It\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Somehow we knew that wasn\u2019t quite how it went.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, we talked about adoption.\u00a0 I thought it was down the road\u2014we would adopt.\u00a0 She goes, \u201cHey, I was just working out this morning.\u00a0 I was told about this little bi-racial, baby boy.\u00a0 What do you think about adopting?\u201d\u00a0 I was like, \u201cOh, yes.\u00a0 Let\u2019s pray about it, and let\u2019s see what the Lord\u2014\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWell, you pray, and I\u2019ll start doing the paperwork.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s how it went.\u00a0 So, yes.\u00a0\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the rest of the story is\u2026.\u00a0 How much did you know about adoption? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 We knew nothing about adoption\u2014absolutely nothing.\u00a0 I really thought I could just call, and we could go get him.\u00a0 I knew nothing.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 We were very naive in the adoption process, but I met with the agency.\u00a0 I called them.\u00a0 I told them we were interested in this little boy.\u00a0 I went down and picked up paperwork.\u00a0 I spent three days and nights\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 She didn\u2019t sleep.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014compiling all of our information and everything we needed.\u00a0 A week later we brought home Isaiah.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat Thanksgiving, Luther always played\u2014Luther always played on Thanksgiving.\u00a0 His mom came to the game, and she brought her niece and her little boy with them.\u00a0 Her little boy was almost two years old.\u00a0 They were from Samoa.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey spent five days with us; and she left her little boy with us, who was about 20 months old.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t want to take him back to Samoa.\u00a0 She knew that she needed to find a better home for him than what she was able to give him.\u00a0 She asked us if we would take him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This was totally unexpected?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Totally unexpected.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want to pause for a moment.\u00a0 As we talk about the orphan, going near the orphan, and beginning to address the needs of orphans by either foster care or adoption, one of the things that has to be in place (and I want you to speak to this just for a moment) is your relationship with Jesus Christ and also your marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf it isn\u2019t in place, some of this baggage that comes in can begin to tear away at the union that is meant to be the life-giving union to these young people that we\u2019re calling our own and inviting into our family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s one thing that\u2019s carried us through all of our marriage so far is that we believe in what God has shared about marriage and just about becoming one and moving forward as one.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t always like that.\u00a0 Especially with the family\u2014expanding the family, and that arena of adoption\u2014it takes a special commitment that you both have to be together on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rebecca, have there been challenges?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, there have.\u00a0 Basically, we weren\u2019t prepared to adopt.\u00a0 We just thought if we love him enough; then, it will be great.\u00a0 We\u2019ll just love him like the other kids.\u00a0 That\u2019s not what he needed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe had never slept in a crib.\u00a0 He had always slept with his birth mom.\u00a0 He was still nursing.\u00a0 I knew nothing about adopting an older child.\u00a0 I stuck him in a crib and thought he should go to sleep.\u00a0 I mean, I knew nothing.\u00a0 I was very, very na\u00efve\u2014attaching and bonding to him and having him bond to me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, I feel like 11 years later we\u2019re back tracking a bit and learning a lot\u2014trying to fix what we really didn\u2019t know at the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was another interesting set of circumstances that occurred around a little baby being born that resulted in yet another adoption.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 So, that July\u2014so, July of 2001\u2014we got a call from the agency.\u00a0 They had a bi-racial, little baby girl that they didn\u2019t have a family for; and we took her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, this infant also\u2014was this the one who you struck up a relationship up with the birth mother?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 We actually don\u2019t have a relationship with the birth mother, but she has now been pregnant two more times.\u00a0 So, Isabelle was born in 2001, Sophia was born in 2003, and Mia was born in 2006.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Those are also\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019re also Ellisses.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Little Ellisses.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re now up to five biological children and five adopted children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, because when Dana was pregnant\u2014so when the birth mom\u2014when Isabelle\u2019s mother was pregnant\u2014these last two times, I was also pregnant.\u00a0 They\u2019re each six weeks apart.\u00a0 So, I have two eight year olds and two five year olds.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 Busy.\u00a0 That\u2019s why I am gray.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m kind of picturing your house in about five years, when you have two 13- year-olds\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That will be interesting.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 That will be interesting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, there is one more story, is there not?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is one more story.\u00a0 Right in between our eight-year-old and five-year- old (we lived in Denver at the time), once again, we got a phone call from the agency.\u00a0 There was an African American little baby boy.\u00a0 He was three weeks old in transitional care.\u00a0 They\u2019d had him since he was born and had been trying to find a family for him and didn\u2019t have a family for him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe started the process once again.\u00a0 That was probably our most difficult\u2014it was the most difficult adoption as far as time-wise and just prayerfully, just really seeking God on, \u201cIs this the right thing for our family?\u201d and it was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, you have 11children, ages 5 to 15.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Luther, you just said you\u2019re praying about another situation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 We\u2019re just open to if God would have us to step forward again to adopt again.\u00a0 I think part of that is also being here during this Summit and feeling God\u2019s pulling and tugging.\u00a0 I\u2019m also going, \u201cLord, what about somebody else?\u00a0 I know a lot of guys in the NFL who would consider this and maybe it\u2019s that step.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRebecca has felt it for awhile.\u00a0 Again, I\u2019ve been fighting it.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know why I fight it.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if all the dads feel the same way.\u00a0 We fight it, we resist; but, then, we know this is what God is calling us to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is amazing once you go through the process and once you bring those children into your home.\u00a0 There\u2019s no difference.\u00a0 You love them just the same.\u00a0 Each child brings something different, special to the home that I would never, ever be without.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have two other expressions that are I think are really cool about the Elliss family.\u00a0 One is that you really honor Jesus Christ with your earnings in the NFL by funding a number of adoptions anonymously\u2014so many\u2014that you don\u2019t even know the number of adoptions that you helped with.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just thought, \u201cWe watch him play football on Sunday.\u00a0 We see those numbers and the zeros stack up.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a couple who put their money where their heart is and their treasure in the same place.\u201d\u00a0 (Applause)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s good stuff.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think once you have this passion, you can\u2019t help but share it.\u00a0 When the other guys see what\u2019s happening in your family and that it\u2019s okay, that these children aren\u2019t terrors.\u00a0 They might give you a little headache here and there; but overall, they\u2019re just like any other child.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGuys within the NFL feel like, \u201cHey, why don\u2019t we do it?\u00a0 Why don\u2019t we step up and do that?\u201d\u00a0 Being able to help those guys go through the process has been a blessing for our family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is one other way that you have expressed your heart for the orphan.\u00a0 I think this is really an important point to make to our listening audience today.\u00a0 You\u2019ve cared for people that\u2014and young children, young adults\u2014who you didn\u2019t necessarily officially adopt; but you provided a family and a home for those who, perhaps, were homeless, or perhaps had been abandoned by their fathers or mothers, or didn\u2019t have a family to really raise them.\u00a0 You\u2019ve done this in a number of young peoples\u2019 lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne young lady you impacted\u2014I want you to just tell us about her because I heard that you impacted a young lady whose name is Esther.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, Esther is a blessing to our family.\u00a0 We met Esther at our church, Kensington Community Church, back in Michigan.\u00a0 She was 12, maybe.\u00a0 We just knew her through ministry there.\u00a0 Then, she started babysitting for us when she was 16.\u00a0 She had just had a rough family life.\u00a0 She definitely became part of our family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 Esther is, I think, she is more of a blessing to us than we probably are to her.\u00a0 The way she loves our children is second to none.\u00a0 She is an amazing young woman who has such a heart for the Lord.\u00a0 She\u2019s helped mentor me, to be quite honest, with her faith, the way she walks, and the way she trusts God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe\u2019s someone that is so special to our family and to our children.\u00a0 Anytime when they hear Esther\u2019s name or anything, they light up.\u00a0\u00a0 If it\u2019s a phone call from Esther, they are racing to the phone.\u00a0 Who gets to talk to her first?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s something that we\u2019ve felt that not only is adoption extremely important; but helping out the youth within our community\u2014mentoring them, be an example for them, inviting them into your home.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t mean you have to bring them all the way into your home or adoption because sometimes that\u2019s not what they are asking for.\u00a0 Again, it\u2019s like\u2014I feel like a lot of the speakers have shared this week is that it is a relationship.\u00a0 They are looking for somebody to just look them in the eye and say, \u201cI love you for who you are, and I am willing to walk with you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think you had quite an impact on her because she flew here to tell us the rest of the story.\u00a0 Esther, would you come out?\u00a0 (Applause)\u00a0 Esther, they took you in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Esther:<\/strong>\u00a0 They did.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I had nothing to offer.\u00a0 I was this teenager, always sensitive to the Lord, knew the Lord, but didn\u2019t understand what people would say, \u201cthe Lord\u2019s a father; the Lord\u2019s nurturing like a mother.\u201d\u00a0 They took me in, and I know that, that\u2019s truth now because of the way they loved me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve got literally tens of millions of children who are fatherless.\u00a0 There\u2019s a lot of Esthers out there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Esther:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re getting emotional because it\u2019s a key time in a young person\u2019s life, isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Esther:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 The Lord changed my career path.\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m trying to teach and train this next generation on why marriage and family matter.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what I would be doing if they didn\u2019t step in.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know where my walk with the Lord would be if they didn\u2019t step in.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 A lot of young people who become homeless at that point live on the streets.\u00a0 They become permanently homeless.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Esther:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, I had lost my biological dad at the age of nine.\u00a0 Then, I had a stepfather in the picture for a couple of years.\u00a0 Then, he had an affair with my biological mom and left.\u00a0 So, my trust in men\u2014I didn\u2019t.\u00a0 You know, I\u2019m still paying for counseling, let\u2019s be honest.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s all right; let\u2019s keep those guys away for a little while longer.\u00a0 I\u2019m okay with that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Esther:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I have a big dad.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just make sure he interviews the guys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Esther:<\/strong>\u00a0 They know that; that\u2019s why I don\u2019t date a lot.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Luther coming in just, I mean, the way he loves is how I picture God.\u00a0 I mean, Luther was he cared about me in a safe way, protected me, and then, the way that he loves Rebecca.\u00a0 I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Esther:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014I would just look at them, the way that they look at each other.\u00a0 Do you remember me always saying, \u201cLike, do you see how he looks at you?\u00a0 Do you even see that?\u201d\u00a0 There was such safety.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were such a team that it was never\u2014I have a lot of pastors that ask me, \u201cEsther, there is a young woman in our church like you, but we don\u2019t know how to mentor her.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know how to bless her.\u201d\u00a0 This together, the oneness, in the marriage, you take in the kids together.\u00a0 You\u2019re a unit.\u00a0 They are still to this day one of the strongest units I know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You hadn\u2019t seen that before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Esther:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, no, no, no, no.\u00a0 I mean, this generation, I think, is so lost.\u00a0 It is redefining marriage and family because they don\u2019t know what it looks like.\u00a0 In fact, I don\u2019t think they are being intentionally malicious to disobey God.\u00a0 I think they just don\u2019t know what it looks like.\u00a0 That\u2019s where the church has such an opportunity to show them why God cares about family, why God cares about marriage.\u00a0 This couple still lives that way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, Luther, Rebecca, wow!\u00a0 The great story of Jesus Christ and of Easter is that He defeated death, and He came to redeem us from ourselves and our sins, and to put a message in our hearts that we live out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know you guys are imperfect sinners just like the rest of us; but in the midst of all that, in the midst of financial challenges, in the midst of challenges with 11 kids and taking in a young lady here that we see has become a woman and now being a guardian of the guy of who wants to marry her some day.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are a lot of orphans in the world in a lot of different walks of life, some overseas, some right next door.\u00a0 We just need to be faithful to do what God has called us to do.\u00a0 He can use imperfect people to accomplish His purposes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThank you for sharing your to make sure that they stay tuned for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This edition of <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> was actually part of the main program.\u00a0 It was recorded on the platform as a part of the events of the summit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There were 1,500 people in the audience.\u00a0 It really was kind of fun because a lot of radio listeners there that were attending the Orphan Care Summit.\u00a0 It\u2019s really a great \u201cwatering hole\u201d for people who care about orphans, foster care, adoption\u2014to be able to come together and share their common passion for how to go about helping this humanitarian crisis of gargantuan proportions.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne hundred forty million orphans around the world in need of the church of Jesus Christ reaching out to them.\u00a0 That\u2019s why really the Orphan Summit was created over seven years ago right here in FamilyLife\u2019s headquarters in Little Rock, Arkansas.\u00a0 It has now grown way beyond what we could house here.\u00a0 As a mentioned, there were a ton of folks in Louisville listening to me as I got a chance to interview the Ellisses.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They got to hear some great stories like this one with Luther and Rebecca Elliss.\u00a0 Here with a special live edition of <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> is Dennis Rainey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Recorded message):\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> before a live, studio audience.\u00a0 (Applause)\u00a0 A little larger than our normal studio audience because we\u2019re at the Summit, which is hosted by Christian Alliance for Orphans\u00ae.; more than 1,500 folks have gathered here from almost all 50 states, a number of countries from all over Europe, all over Asia, Africa, Latin America, South America, all talking about the needs of orphans.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to tell you a story that happened to me yesterday here at the Summit.\u00a0 An attorney came up to me from Seattle, Washington.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI have a vision to rally the churches of the state of Washington,\u201d which by the way, is the least populated in terms of churches of any state in the Union.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re going to call the church together.\u00a0 We already have cooperation from DHS and the state of Washington to begin to address the needs of foster care children.\u201d\u00a0 (Applause)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s just one story of hundreds of stories that are taking place.\u00a0 There are many more that came up to me and shared stories that are just as exciting.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, we have a guest with us, a pair of guests with us, that have got their own story of how they have addressed the needs of orphans and gone close to the needs of orphans.\u00a0 Luther and Rebecca Elliss join us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Rebecca, Luther, welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Luther played professional football for ten years in the NFL: nine with the Detroit Lions, one with the Denver Broncos.\u00a0 He was picked twice to play in the Pro Bowl which means he was one mean defensive tackle.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if mean; but yes, I enjoyed the game.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you what, if I was a quarterback, I would not want to see you coming after me, brother.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRebecca was in college at the same time and competed on the University of Utah swim team, is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Where suddenly Luther became deeply interested in swimming.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, you finally married after a quick courtship and started having children, Rebecca.\u00a0 After you had three children, something very fascinating happened around the issue of the orphan. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 We had been married a little over three or four years.\u00a0 We had three biological children.\u00a0 We were in Salt Lake City visiting family.\u00a0 I went and worked out with a friend.\u00a0 She had told\u2014the night before had seen a little boy, bi-racial little boy.\u00a0 He was in transitional care with a private adoption agency.\u00a0 The agency didn\u2019t have a family for him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe just shared that she felt like God showed her this child to share\u2014just find him a home.\u00a0 On the way home from the gym, I called Luther.\u00a0 He was like, \u201cOkay, let\u2019s find out what we need to do.\u201d\u00a0 We knew\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hold it!\u00a0 Hold it!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s not quite how it went.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 That\u2019s not quite how it went.\u00a0 It\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Somehow we knew that wasn\u2019t quite how it went.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, we talked about adoption.\u00a0 I thought it was down the road\u2014we would adopt.\u00a0 She goes, \u201cHey, I was just working out this morning.\u00a0 I was told about this little bi-racial, baby boy.\u00a0 What do you think about adopting?\u201d\u00a0 I was like, \u201cOh, yes.\u00a0 Let\u2019s pray about it, and let\u2019s see what the Lord\u2014\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWell, you pray, and I\u2019ll start doing the paperwork.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s how it went.\u00a0 So, yes.\u00a0\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, the rest of the story is\u2026.\u00a0 How much did you know about adoption? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 We knew nothing about adoption\u2014absolutely nothing.\u00a0 I really thought I could just call, and we could go get him.\u00a0 I knew nothing.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 We were very naive in the adoption process, but I met with the agency.\u00a0 I called them.\u00a0 I told them we were interested in this little boy.\u00a0 I went down and picked up paperwork.\u00a0 I spent three days and nights\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 She didn\u2019t sleep.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014compiling all of our information and everything we needed.\u00a0 A week later we brought home Isaiah.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat Thanksgiving, Luther always played\u2014Luther always played on Thanksgiving.\u00a0 His mom came to the game, and she brought her niece and her little boy with them.\u00a0 Her little boy was almost two years old.\u00a0 They were from Samoa.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey spent five days with us; and she left her little boy with us, who was about 20 months old.\u00a0 She didn\u2019t want to take him back to Samoa.\u00a0 She knew that she needed to find a better home for him than what she was able to give him.\u00a0 She asked us if we would take him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This was totally unexpected?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Totally unexpected.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want to pause for a moment.\u00a0 As we talk about the orphan, going near the orphan, and beginning to address the needs of orphans by either foster care or adoption, one of the things that has to be in place (and I want you to speak to this just for a moment) is your relationship with Jesus Christ and also your marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf it isn\u2019t in place, some of this baggage that comes in can begin to tear away at the union that is meant to be the life-giving union to these young people that we\u2019re calling our own and inviting into our family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s one thing that\u2019s carried us through all of our marriage so far is that we believe in what God has shared about marriage and just about becoming one and moving forward as one.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t always like that.\u00a0 Especially with the family\u2014expanding the family, and that arena of adoption\u2014it takes a special commitment that you both have to be together on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rebecca, have there been challenges?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, there have.\u00a0 Basically, we weren\u2019t prepared to adopt.\u00a0 We just thought if we love him enough; then, it will be great.\u00a0 We\u2019ll just love him like the other kids.\u00a0 That\u2019s not what he needed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe had never slept in a crib.\u00a0 He had always slept with his birth mom.\u00a0 He was still nursing.\u00a0 I knew nothing about adopting an older child.\u00a0 I stuck him in a crib and thought he should go to sleep.\u00a0 I mean, I knew nothing.\u00a0 I was very, very na\u00efve\u2014attaching and bonding to him and having him bond to me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, I feel like 11 years later we\u2019re back tracking a bit and learning a lot\u2014trying to fix what we really didn\u2019t know at the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was another interesting set of circumstances that occurred around a little baby being born that resulted in yet another adoption.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 So, that July\u2014so, July of 2001\u2014we got a call from the agency.\u00a0 They had a bi-racial, little baby girl that they didn\u2019t have a family for; and we took her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, this infant also\u2014was this the one who you struck up a relationship up with the birth mother?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 We actually don\u2019t have a relationship with the birth mother, but she has now been pregnant two more times.\u00a0 So, Isabelle was born in 2001, Sophia was born in 2003, and Mia was born in 2006.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Those are also\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019re also Ellisses.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Little Ellisses.\u00a0 So, we\u2019re now up to five biological children and five adopted children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, because when Dana was pregnant\u2014so when the birth mom\u2014when Isabelle\u2019s mother was pregnant\u2014these last two times, I was also pregnant.\u00a0 They\u2019re each six weeks apart.\u00a0 So, I have two eight year olds and two five year olds.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 Busy.\u00a0 That\u2019s why I am gray.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m kind of picturing your house in about five years, when you have two 13- year-olds\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That will be interesting.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 That will be interesting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, there is one more story, is there not?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is one more story.\u00a0 Right in between our eight-year-old and five-year- old (we lived in Denver at the time), once again, we got a phone call from the agency.\u00a0 There was an African American little baby boy.\u00a0 He was three weeks old in transitional care.\u00a0 They\u2019d had him since he was born and had been trying to find a family for him and didn\u2019t have a family for him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe started the process once again.\u00a0 That was probably our most difficult\u2014it was the most difficult adoption as far as time-wise and just prayerfully, just really seeking God on, \u201cIs this the right thing for our family?\u201d and it was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, you have 11children, ages 5 to 15.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Luther, you just said you\u2019re praying about another situation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 We\u2019re just open to if God would have us to step forward again to adopt again.\u00a0 I think part of that is also being here during this Summit and feeling God\u2019s pulling and tugging.\u00a0 I\u2019m also going, \u201cLord, what about somebody else?\u00a0 I know a lot of guys in the NFL who would consider this and maybe it\u2019s that step.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRebecca has felt it for awhile.\u00a0 Again, I\u2019ve been fighting it.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know why I fight it.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if all the dads feel the same way.\u00a0 We fight it, we resist; but, then, we know this is what God is calling us to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is amazing once you go through the process and once you bring those children into your home.\u00a0 There\u2019s no difference.\u00a0 You love them just the same.\u00a0 Each child brings something different, special to the home that I would never, ever be without.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have two other expressions that are I think are really cool about the Elliss family.\u00a0 One is that you really honor Jesus Christ with your earnings in the NFL by funding a number of adoptions anonymously\u2014so many\u2014that you don\u2019t even know the number of adoptions that you helped with.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just thought, \u201cWe watch him play football on Sunday.\u00a0 We see those numbers and the zeros stack up.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a couple who put their money where their heart is and their treasure in the same place.\u201d\u00a0 (Applause)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s good stuff.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think once you have this passion, you can\u2019t help but share it.\u00a0 When the other guys see what\u2019s happening in your family and that it\u2019s okay, that these children aren\u2019t terrors.\u00a0 They might give you a little headache here and there; but overall, they\u2019re just like any other child.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGuys within the NFL feel like, \u201cHey, why don\u2019t we do it?\u00a0 Why don\u2019t we step up and do that?\u201d\u00a0 Being able to help those guys go through the process has been a blessing for our family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is one other way that you have expressed your heart for the orphan.\u00a0 I think this is really an important point to make to our listening audience today.\u00a0 You\u2019ve cared for people that\u2014and young children, young adults\u2014who you didn\u2019t necessarily officially adopt; but you provided a family and a home for those who, perhaps, were homeless, or perhaps had been abandoned by their fathers or mothers, or didn\u2019t have a family to really raise them.\u00a0 You\u2019ve done this in a number of young peoples\u2019 lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne young lady you impacted\u2014I want you to just tell us about her because I heard that you impacted a young lady whose name is Esther.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rebecca:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, Esther is a blessing to our family.\u00a0 We met Esther at our church, Kensington Community Church, back in Michigan.\u00a0 She was 12, maybe.\u00a0 We just knew her through ministry there.\u00a0 Then, she started babysitting for us when she was 16.\u00a0 She had just had a rough family life.\u00a0 She definitely became part of our family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 Esther is, I think, she is more of a blessing to us than we probably are to her.\u00a0 The way she loves our children is second to none.\u00a0 She is an amazing young woman who has such a heart for the Lord.\u00a0 She\u2019s helped mentor me, to be quite honest, with her faith, the way she walks, and the way she trusts God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe\u2019s someone that is so special to our family and to our children.\u00a0 Anytime when they hear Esther\u2019s name or anything, they light up.\u00a0\u00a0 If it\u2019s a phone call from Esther, they are racing to the phone.\u00a0 Who gets to talk to her first?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s something that we\u2019ve felt that not only is adoption extremely important; but helping out the youth within our community\u2014mentoring them, be an example for them, inviting them into your home.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t mean you have to bring them all the way into your home or adoption because sometimes that\u2019s not what they are asking for.\u00a0 Again, it\u2019s like\u2014I feel like a lot of the speakers have shared this week is that it is a relationship.\u00a0 They are looking for somebody to just look them in the eye and say, \u201cI love you for who you are, and I am willing to walk with you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think you had quite an impact on her because she flew here to tell us the rest of the story.\u00a0 Esther, would you come out?\u00a0 (Applause)\u00a0 Esther, they took you in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Esther:<\/strong>\u00a0 They did.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I had nothing to offer.\u00a0 I was this teenager, always sensitive to the Lord, knew the Lord, but didn\u2019t understand what people would say, \u201cthe Lord\u2019s a father; the Lord\u2019s nurturing like a mother.\u201d\u00a0 They took me in, and I know that, that\u2019s truth now because of the way they loved me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve got literally tens of millions of children who are fatherless.\u00a0 There\u2019s a lot of Esthers out there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Esther:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re getting emotional because it\u2019s a key time in a young person\u2019s life, isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Esther:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 The Lord changed my career path.\u00a0 Now, I\u2019m trying to teach and train this next generation on why marriage and family matter.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what I would be doing if they didn\u2019t step in.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know where my walk with the Lord would be if they didn\u2019t step in.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 A lot of young people who become homeless at that point live on the streets.\u00a0 They become permanently homeless.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Esther:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, I had lost my biological dad at the age of nine.\u00a0 Then, I had a stepfather in the picture for a couple of years.\u00a0 Then, he had an affair with my biological mom and left.\u00a0 So, my trust in men\u2014I didn\u2019t.\u00a0 You know, I\u2019m still paying for counseling, let\u2019s be honest.\u00a0 (Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Luther:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s all right; let\u2019s keep those guys away for a little while longer.\u00a0 I\u2019m okay with that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Esther:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I have a big dad.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just make sure he interviews the guys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Esther:<\/strong>\u00a0 They know that; that\u2019s why I don\u2019t date a lot.\u00a0 (Laughter)\u00a0 Luther coming in just, I mean, the way he loves is how I picture God.\u00a0 I mean, Luther was he cared about me in a safe way, protected me, and then, the way that he loves Rebecca.\u00a0 I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Esther:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014I would just look at them, the way that they look at each other.\u00a0 Do you remember me always saying, \u201cLike, do you see how he looks at you?\u00a0 Do you even see that?\u201d\u00a0 There was such safety.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were such a team that it was never\u2014I have a lot of pastors that ask me, \u201cEsther, there is a young woman in our church like you, but we don\u2019t know how to mentor her.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know how to bless her.\u201d\u00a0 This together, the oneness, in the marriage, you take in the kids together.\u00a0 You\u2019re a unit.\u00a0 They are still to this day one of the strongest units I know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You hadn\u2019t seen that before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Esther:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, no, no, no, no.\u00a0 I mean, this generation, I think, is so lost.\u00a0 It is redefining marriage and family because they don\u2019t know what it looks like.\u00a0 In fact, I don\u2019t think they are being intentionally malicious to disobey God.\u00a0 I think they just don\u2019t know what it looks like.\u00a0 That\u2019s where the church has such an opportunity to show them why God cares about family, why God cares about marriage.\u00a0 This couple still lives that way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, Luther, Rebecca, wow!\u00a0 The great story of Jesus Christ and of Easter is that He defeated death, and He came to redeem us from ourselves and our sins, and to put a message in our hearts that we live out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know you guys are imperfect sinners just like the rest of us; but in the midst of all that, in the midst of financial challenges, in the midst of challenges with 11 kids and taking in a young lady here that we see has become a woman and now being a guardian of the guy of who wants to marry her some day.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are a lot of orphans in the world in a lot of different walks of life, some overseas, some right next door.\u00a0 We just need to be faithful to do what God has called us to do.\u00a0 He can use imperfect people to accomplish His purposes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThank you for sharing your
