<\/strong>Before God can begin to work in a marriage He often will begin by working in our hearts.\u00a0 That was the case a few years ago when God began to work in the marriage of Michael and Heidi O\u2019Brien.\u00a0 Michael was the lead singer of the group Newsong and both he and Heidi knew something needed to change.\u00a0 That\u2019s when God went to work.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 As I look back at what was going on in Michael\u2019s life there was a just wave of repentance that hit him about five or six years ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>(song) I keep seeing your face when I close my eyes<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 He just began to change.\u00a0 That\u2019s the only way I can describe it.\u00a0 He just became proactive in the relationship and, oh my goodness, the healing!\u00a0\u00a0 Because I was being loved.\u00a0 I was being cherished for welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 You have had a couple of times in leading a ministry over the last three decades where you\u2019ve had to kind of call a time out in terms of the demands on you in order to recalibrate some things at home, haven\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve actually cancelled a speaking engagement or two just because I couldn\u2019t go do it.\u00a0 I needed to trim the sails and head home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you called a moratorium on some extended periods of speaking engagements so that you could make sure things at home were what they needed to be, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just celebrating a year of not taking any outside speaking engagement so that Barbara and I could move into this next season we\u2019re in with a clear head and a clear heart and have a sense of mission and purpose about our lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 At times that felt like a costly choice to make, didn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, yes.\u00a0 But most good things in life cost you something.\u00a0 The things that are free are usually worth what you paid for them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughing)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know we\u2019ve been talking this week with a couple who have made some costly choices of their own.\u00a0 Bob, you\u2019re a music fan.\u00a0 Introduce our guests to our audience today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ll do it the way that you used to do it in the arenas, right?\u00a0 <em>Ladies and <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>gentlemen!<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>Let\u2019s welcome Michael O\u2019Brien!<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is that the way they did it?\u00a0 You\u2019ve had it done that way, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, actually I have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They do that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh yeah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019ve done that before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They whip up the crowd and get then all\u2026\u00a0 <em>Are you guys excited?<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>Are you excited?<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>Let me hear you!<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>Are you excited?<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>It\u2019s that kind of thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve actually played to one person, on the front row!\u00a0 And that\u2019s no lie.\u00a0 And then the guy running the sound.\u00a0 There are two people in the audience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 The girl started clapping for me and my song.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Seriously?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was the girl your wife?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, actually just a good fan.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Paid to be there, huh?\u00a0 Well, first of all, Heidi, Michael, welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I need to do that for Heidi too.\u00a0 <em>Welcome, Heidi O\u2019Brien!<\/em>\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry; I was just doing it for your husband!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want you to know.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had a lot of guests on the broadcast over the past fifteen years.\u00a0 This is a first.\u00a0 Bob had never done that!\u00a0 I\u2019m kind of going, \u201cwell, there\u2019s another one for the record book.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve been sharing your story, though, of your marriage that started, what year?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 1989.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 l989.\u00a0 And how\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In a divorce court before the justice of the peace, right?\u00a0 And if you missed that story, you need to listen to it on our website at FamilyLife.com.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 The first six or seven years were rocky, tough.\u00a0 Finally you hit a wall and the wall didn\u2019t result with you tearing it down instantly.\u00a0 But you began a five year process of addressing that wall.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there a low point where you\u2019d have to say the ultimate wakeup call, where you felt like this was the bottom of the barrel and after that moment you began the process of climbing out?\u00a0 Heidi?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I would have to say even though it wasn\u2019t a quick climb out, when I was checked into Vanderbilt Psychiatric Ward.\u00a0 That was literally frightening.\u00a0 There were people there who had things around their necks because they tried to slit their throats.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was afraid.\u00a0 I was afraid at nighttime, in a room.\u00a0 I had a woman beside me who was scaring me and saying certain things.\u00a0 I was heavily medicated at that time.\u00a0 I\u2019d been on different medications for some of these things that I had been struggling with.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut one thing that is just seared in my memory is when I had to sit before a panel.\u00a0 The head man and different people that had interviewed me during that time.\u00a0 The main man just looked at me and he said, \u201cMrs. O\u2019Brien, it\u2019s easier to be mentally ill than to be angry at your husband.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s when it hit me that I had just major, major anger issues that I had stuffed for a long, long time that I needed to deal with.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I\u2019ve always said when it comes to mental illness there is the spiritual and emotional.\u00a0 There\u2019s the physical element, that there is actually stuff going on with your body.\u00a0 And there is the environmental.\u00a0 I had a lot of things in my environment, a lot of stressors, things there were triggering.\u00a0 So it\u2019s a full circle thing.\u00a0 And you have to deal with it all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Heidi, did you come to a point where it was a real crossroads, where you had to make a choice to forgive Michael?\u00a0 Where you released all the punishment you were taking out on him and you gave up the right of punishing him and you gave it to Christ and you forgave him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 There were several events.\u00a0 But my pastor says this so beautifully.\u00a0 Forgiveness is a choice but it\u2019s a force.\u00a0 You make the decision to forgive because Christ forgave you.\u00a0 Your emotions don\u2019t necessarily immediately follow that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you continue to make the choice to do that and you give it to the Lord and you say, \u201cLord, you\u2019re going to have to heal my heart.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to have to change my heart.\u201d\u00a0 And He does.\u00a0 He\u2019s faithful!\u00a0 It\u2019s a process.\u00a0 Getting into that pit was a process and getting out is a process.\u00a0 It\u2019s slow, at least for us, it was slow.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut He is faithful.\u00a0 If you will not grow weary in doing well you will reap a harvest.\u00a0 I would have to say, very shortly after, once again, that hospital stay, I really knew this dream that I\u2019ve carried forever, it\u2019s killing me.\u00a0 It\u2019s killing my marriage.\u00a0 It\u2019s just not good.\u00a0 So I let it die.\u00a0 I let it go and chose to forgive and continually had to choose to forgive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Michael, I want to ask you about sitting on the bus between the show in Green Bay and the show in Madison or the show in Fargo and the show in wherever.\u00a0 You\u2019re travelling around from city to city.\u00a0 I guess you\u2019re calling back home to say how are things, right?\u00a0 But you wife\u2019s in the hospital or she\u2019s now out of the hospital.\u00a0 You had to feel like \u201cam I in the right place?\u201d\u00a0 Didn\u2019t you stop and think, \u201cI ought to be home?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, there were many times I thought I needed to be home.\u00a0 I felt crippled because I didn\u2019t know how to be home and provide for the family.\u00a0 It was an eye-opening thing because as I would lead and share my testimony every night I just became more and more empty.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wasn\u2019t having fun anymore.\u00a0 It became a job.\u00a0 It became a paycheck.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t fulfilled.\u00a0 Even though I relied on <em>Newsong<\/em> at that time to pay the bills, I just knew God had a better way for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re on the road hundreds of nights a year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Literally, because we would do a 120 shows a year, plus I\u2019d travel back and forth to Atlanta.\u00a0 I\u2019d commute.\u00a0 Then you\u2019ve got to think about making records.\u00a0 I did all the song writing with Eddie.\u00a0 I\u2019d be at home but I wasn\u2019t at home.\u00a0 I had to take off and go here and there.\u00a0 I\u2019d go in the studio.\u00a0 You spend thirty or forty days in the studio.\u00a0 If you add it up, it\u2019s just, it\u2019s a sad story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you look back on that and think about how connected you weren\u2019t to your wife and your kids, does that make sense to you now?\u00a0 At the time, you had to go, \u201cThis is what people in my line of work do.\u00a0 They\u2019re just disconnected and they come home from time to time and spend a little time with the family.\u00a0 But, really, the job\u2019s the thing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah.\u00a0 When we say miracle, God began to do a miracle in our relationship to the point where\u2026\u00a0 You know, I think we looked in the dictionary recently about what the word, what\u2019s the word, hon?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWoo.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 To woo, to woo.\u00a0 God was wooing her to me, and wooing me to her and there was this thing that was happening, the purity and all that was just so amazing to me.\u00a0 We were coming up against a lot of darkness, a lot.\u00a0 We were seeing the victories.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 As I look back on what was going on in Michael\u2019s life is there was just a wave of repentance that hit him about five, six years ago.\u00a0 He just began to change.\u00a0 That\u2019s the only way I can describe it.\u00a0 He just became proactive in the relationship.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod was just changing him.\u00a0 Man does not change the heart.\u00a0 His heart was changing towards the heart of God and he began to start serving me and loving me the way Christ loved the church.\u00a0 His focus started getting off of him and, not just onto me, but onto the children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe came home not saying, \u201cOkay, serve me,\u201d but \u201chow can I serve?\u201d\u00a0 He began, once again, what is it that my wife finds attractive?\u00a0 What does she find attractive?\u00a0 And so he\u2019s out reading these books because he knows I kind of like literature and history and intellectual things.\u00a0 So he\u2019s out trying to get stuff in his head so we can have conversation \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There you go!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh yeah.\u00a0 Chick flicks!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have truly stepped up!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is a healthy balance between that and war movies and things like that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What was it like for you to have your husband changing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 At first, I didn\u2019t exactly know what to do with it.\u00a0 I was just like, \u201cIs this real?\u00a0 What are you doing?\u00a0 This feels really weird.\u00a0 I\u2019m not used to this?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, when I knew it just wasn\u2019t a phase, that it wasn\u2019t going away, that it was safe, that I could let it in, oh my goodness!\u00a0 The healing!\u00a0 I was being loved.\u00a0 I was being cherished for the first time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that\u2019s where I started writing these nostalgic songs, because she loved that kind of music.\u00a0 I\u2019d tried the other songs, the \u201chey, I\u2019ll stick with you no matter how tough it gets\u201d kind of songs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hard driving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it did not connect on any level.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 But these songs\u2026\u00a0 I went home.\u00a0 It was Mother\u2019s Day, 2004, and I remember I had my guitar.\u00a0 I\u2019m not a guitar player but I wrote this song on the guitar in the back of the bus, came home, played this song for her.\u00a0 I knew she was going to like it.\u00a0 She just fell in love with it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I just started writing more.\u00a0 I started writing more.\u00a0 And really, this record, this <em>Something About Us<\/em> record, is really the blessing of us staying together.\u00a0 The very first song I played for her is called \u201cOne and Only\u201d and that\u2019s truly what she is to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can you play that song that you wrote on the back of the bus on the guitar?\u00a0 We don\u2019t\u2019 have a guitar but maybe play it on the keyboard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>I\u2019ve been dreaming about your face.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Getting lost and obsessed in your embrace.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Just one more kiss for me would be a tragedy if you stopped winking at her.\u00a0 I want you to repeat that last line for me, if you would.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> Are you going to try this out on Barbara tonight?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I am.\u00a0 I really like that.\u00a0 How did that last line lot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s singing about you, isn\u2019t he?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know!\u00a0 And sometimes, really when I enjoy it the most is when I\u2019m completely by myself and I turn it on and it\u2019s kind of \u201coh, wow, that\u2019s about me!\u00a0 That\u2019s really amazing!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Does that make you feel loved?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yeah!\u00a0 Absolutely. But this is the important thing.\u00a0 The reason it means so much to me is because before he ever wrote this song, I felt it.\u00a0 I knew I was loved.\u00a0 I was living it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was living those songs with him in our married life for a season of time and so I think I probably would have rolled my eyes at one point in our marriage, like \u201cyeah, right,\u201d you know?\u00a0 But it was real.\u00a0 I was at a place where I could just receive it and I just sort of bathed in it.\u00a0 It\u2019s just so wonderful.\u00a0 It\u2019s just so delightful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Michael, you\u2019re a long ways from the dark ages.\u00a0 You were just crying.\u00a0 Why did you cry when she said that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just\u2026\u00a0 Just the blessing of the Lord, just to have somebody like her.\u00a0 She\u2019s been good for me.\u00a0 God has really been merciful and I\u2019m just so thankful for her.\u00a0 It\u2019s a gift.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, she is God\u2019s gift to you.\u00a0 I just want to applaud both of you for not quitting.\u00a0 You\u2019ve faced some pretty tough issues in your marriage and not just for a sprint, but for a pretty long season.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m grateful that you\u2019re modeling for a group of young people who have followed you and I hope will benefit from this recent album, <em>Something About welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 You have had a couple of times in leading a ministry over the last three decades where you\u2019ve had to kind of call a time out in terms of the demands on you in order to recalibrate some things at home, haven\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve actually cancelled a speaking engagement or two just because I couldn\u2019t go do it.\u00a0 I needed to trim the sails and head home.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you called a moratorium on some extended periods of speaking engagements so that you could make sure things at home were what they needed to be, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just celebrating a year of not taking any outside speaking engagement so that Barbara and I could move into this next season we\u2019re in with a clear head and a clear heart and have a sense of mission and purpose about our lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 At times that felt like a costly choice to make, didn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, yes.\u00a0 But most good things in life cost you something.\u00a0 The things that are free are usually worth what you paid for them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughing)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know we\u2019ve been talking this week with a couple who have made some costly choices of their own.\u00a0 Bob, you\u2019re a music fan.\u00a0 Introduce our guests to our audience today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ll do it the way that you used to do it in the arenas, right?\u00a0 <em>Ladies and <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>gentlemen!<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>Let\u2019s welcome Michael O\u2019Brien!<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is that the way they did it?\u00a0 You\u2019ve had it done that way, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, actually I have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They do that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh yeah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019ve done that before.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They whip up the crowd and get then all\u2026\u00a0 <em>Are you guys excited?<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>Are you excited?<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>Let me hear you!<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>Are you excited?<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>It\u2019s that kind of thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve actually played to one person, on the front row!\u00a0 And that\u2019s no lie.\u00a0 And then the guy running the sound.\u00a0 There are two people in the audience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 The girl started clapping for me and my song.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Seriously?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was the girl your wife?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, actually just a good fan.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Paid to be there, huh?\u00a0 Well, first of all, Heidi, Michael, welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I need to do that for Heidi too.\u00a0 <em>Welcome, Heidi O\u2019Brien!<\/em>\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry; I was just doing it for your husband!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want you to know.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had a lot of guests on the broadcast over the past fifteen years.\u00a0 This is a first.\u00a0 Bob had never done that!\u00a0 I\u2019m kind of going, \u201cwell, there\u2019s another one for the record book.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve been sharing your story, though, of your marriage that started, what year?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 1989.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 l989.\u00a0 And how\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In a divorce court before the justice of the peace, right?\u00a0 And if you missed that story, you need to listen to it on our website at FamilyLife.com.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 The first six or seven years were rocky, tough.\u00a0 Finally you hit a wall and the wall didn\u2019t result with you tearing it down instantly.\u00a0 But you began a five year process of addressing that wall.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there a low point where you\u2019d have to say the ultimate wakeup call, where you felt like this was the bottom of the barrel and after that moment you began the process of climbing out?\u00a0 Heidi?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I would have to say even though it wasn\u2019t a quick climb out, when I was checked into Vanderbilt Psychiatric Ward.\u00a0 That was literally frightening.\u00a0 There were people there who had things around their necks because they tried to slit their throats.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was afraid.\u00a0 I was afraid at nighttime, in a room.\u00a0 I had a woman beside me who was scaring me and saying certain things.\u00a0 I was heavily medicated at that time.\u00a0 I\u2019d been on different medications for some of these things that I had been struggling with.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut one thing that is just seared in my memory is when I had to sit before a panel.\u00a0 The head man and different people that had interviewed me during that time.\u00a0 The main man just looked at me and he said, \u201cMrs. O\u2019Brien, it\u2019s easier to be mentally ill than to be angry at your husband.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s when it hit me that I had just major, major anger issues that I had stuffed for a long, long time that I needed to deal with.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I\u2019ve always said when it comes to mental illness there is the spiritual and emotional.\u00a0 There\u2019s the physical element, that there is actually stuff going on with your body.\u00a0 And there is the environmental.\u00a0 I had a lot of things in my environment, a lot of stressors, things there were triggering.\u00a0 So it\u2019s a full circle thing.\u00a0 And you have to deal with it all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Heidi, did you come to a point where it was a real crossroads, where you had to make a choice to forgive Michael?\u00a0 Where you released all the punishment you were taking out on him and you gave up the right of punishing him and you gave it to Christ and you forgave him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 There were several events.\u00a0 But my pastor says this so beautifully.\u00a0 Forgiveness is a choice but it\u2019s a force.\u00a0 You make the decision to forgive because Christ forgave you.\u00a0 Your emotions don\u2019t necessarily immediately follow that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you continue to make the choice to do that and you give it to the Lord and you say, \u201cLord, you\u2019re going to have to heal my heart.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to have to change my heart.\u201d\u00a0 And He does.\u00a0 He\u2019s faithful!\u00a0 It\u2019s a process.\u00a0 Getting into that pit was a process and getting out is a process.\u00a0 It\u2019s slow, at least for us, it was slow.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut He is faithful.\u00a0 If you will not grow weary in doing well you will reap a harvest.\u00a0 I would have to say, very shortly after, once again, that hospital stay, I really knew this dream that I\u2019ve carried forever, it\u2019s killing me.\u00a0 It\u2019s killing my marriage.\u00a0 It\u2019s just not good.\u00a0 So I let it die.\u00a0 I let it go and chose to forgive and continually had to choose to forgive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Michael, I want to ask you about sitting on the bus between the show in Green Bay and the show in Madison or the show in Fargo and the show in wherever.\u00a0 You\u2019re travelling around from city to city.\u00a0 I guess you\u2019re calling back home to say how are things, right?\u00a0 But you wife\u2019s in the hospital or she\u2019s now out of the hospital.\u00a0 You had to feel like \u201cam I in the right place?\u201d\u00a0 Didn\u2019t you stop and think, \u201cI ought to be home?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, there were many times I thought I needed to be home.\u00a0 I felt crippled because I didn\u2019t know how to be home and provide for the family.\u00a0 It was an eye-opening thing because as I would lead and share my testimony every night I just became more and more empty.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wasn\u2019t having fun anymore.\u00a0 It became a job.\u00a0 It became a paycheck.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t fulfilled.\u00a0 Even though I relied on <em>Newsong<\/em> at that time to pay the bills, I just knew God had a better way for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re on the road hundreds of nights a year.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Literally, because we would do a 120 shows a year, plus I\u2019d travel back and forth to Atlanta.\u00a0 I\u2019d commute.\u00a0 Then you\u2019ve got to think about making records.\u00a0 I did all the song writing with Eddie.\u00a0 I\u2019d be at home but I wasn\u2019t at home.\u00a0 I had to take off and go here and there.\u00a0 I\u2019d go in the studio.\u00a0 You spend thirty or forty days in the studio.\u00a0 If you add it up, it\u2019s just, it\u2019s a sad story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you look back on that and think about how connected you weren\u2019t to your wife and your kids, does that make sense to you now?\u00a0 At the time, you had to go, \u201cThis is what people in my line of work do.\u00a0 They\u2019re just disconnected and they come home from time to time and spend a little time with the family.\u00a0 But, really, the job\u2019s the thing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah.\u00a0 When we say miracle, God began to do a miracle in our relationship to the point where\u2026\u00a0 You know, I think we looked in the dictionary recently about what the word, what\u2019s the word, hon?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWoo.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 To woo, to woo.\u00a0 God was wooing her to me, and wooing me to her and there was this thing that was happening, the purity and all that was just so amazing to me.\u00a0 We were coming up against a lot of darkness, a lot.\u00a0 We were seeing the victories.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 As I look back on what was going on in Michael\u2019s life is there was just a wave of repentance that hit him about five, six years ago.\u00a0 He just began to change.\u00a0 That\u2019s the only way I can describe it.\u00a0 He just became proactive in the relationship.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod was just changing him.\u00a0 Man does not change the heart.\u00a0 His heart was changing towards the heart of God and he began to start serving me and loving me the way Christ loved the church.\u00a0 His focus started getting off of him and, not just onto me, but onto the children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe came home not saying, \u201cOkay, serve me,\u201d but \u201chow can I serve?\u201d\u00a0 He began, once again, what is it that my wife finds attractive?\u00a0 What does she find attractive?\u00a0 And so he\u2019s out reading these books because he knows I kind of like literature and history and intellectual things.\u00a0 So he\u2019s out trying to get stuff in his head so we can have conversation together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now wait.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t read Jane Austen, did you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 I watched <em>Sense and Sensibility<\/em> and <em>Emma<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh yeah.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There you go!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh yeah.\u00a0 Chick flicks!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have truly stepped up!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is a healthy balance between that and war movies and things like that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What was it like for you to have your husband changing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 At first, I didn\u2019t exactly know what to do with it.\u00a0 I was just like, \u201cIs this real?\u00a0 What are you doing?\u00a0 This feels really weird.\u00a0 I\u2019m not used to this?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, when I knew it just wasn\u2019t a phase, that it wasn\u2019t going away, that it was safe, that I could let it in, oh my goodness!\u00a0 The healing!\u00a0 I was being loved.\u00a0 I was being cherished for the first time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that\u2019s where I started writing these nostalgic songs, because she loved that kind of music.\u00a0 I\u2019d tried the other songs, the \u201chey, I\u2019ll stick with you no matter how tough it gets\u201d kind of songs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hard driving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it did not connect on any level.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 But these songs\u2026\u00a0 I went home.\u00a0 It was Mother\u2019s Day, 2004, and I remember I had my guitar.\u00a0 I\u2019m not a guitar player but I wrote this song on the guitar in the back of the bus, came home, played this song for her.\u00a0 I knew she was going to like it.\u00a0 She just fell in love with it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I just started writing more.\u00a0 I started writing more.\u00a0 And really, this record, this <em>Something About Us<\/em> record, is really the blessing of us staying together.\u00a0 The very first song I played for her is called \u201cOne and Only\u201d and that\u2019s truly what she is to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can you play that song that you wrote on the back of the bus on the guitar?\u00a0 We don\u2019t\u2019 have a guitar but maybe play it on the keyboard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>I\u2019ve been dreaming about your face.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Getting lost and obsessed in your embrace.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Just one more kiss for me would be a tragedy if you stopped go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve heard that song how many times?\u00a0 You wrote it Mother\u2019s Day of \u201804?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 I made him probably sing it to me that day many, numerous times.\u00a0 So I\u2019ve heard it a lot.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s singing about you, isn\u2019t he?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know!\u00a0 And sometimes, really when I enjoy it the most is when I\u2019m completely by myself and I turn it on and it\u2019s kind of \u201coh, wow, that\u2019s about me!\u00a0 That\u2019s really amazing!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Does that make you feel loved?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Heidi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yeah!\u00a0 Absolutely. But this is the important thing.\u00a0 The reason it means so much to me is because before he ever wrote this song, I felt it.\u00a0 I knew I was loved.\u00a0 I was living it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was living those songs with him in our married life for a season of time and so I think I probably would have rolled my eyes at one point in our marriage, like \u201cyeah, right,\u201d you know?\u00a0 But it was real.\u00a0 I was at a place where I could just receive it and I just sort of bathed in it.\u00a0 It\u2019s just so wonderful.\u00a0 It\u2019s just so delightful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Michael, you\u2019re a long ways from the dark ages.\u00a0 You were just crying.\u00a0 Why did you cry when she said that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Michael:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just\u2026\u00a0 Just the blessing of the Lord, just to have somebody like her.\u00a0 She\u2019s been good for me.\u00a0 God has really been merciful and I\u2019m just so thankful for her.\u00a0 It\u2019s a gift.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, she is God\u2019s gift to you.\u00a0 I just want to applaud both of you for not quitting.\u00a0 You\u2019ve faced some pretty tough issues in your marriage and not just for a sprint, but for a pretty long season.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m grateful that you\u2019re modeling for a group of young people who have followed you and I hope will benefit from this recent album, <em>Something About Us<\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m grateful, Bob, for models of commitment.\u00a0 We need more of that within the Christian community today.\u00a0 Divorce has become the popular option.\u00a0\u00a0 It
