of kids aged 12 to 15 years old.\u00a0 Fifty-three percent of the boys said that they\u2019re using graphic pornography.\u00a0 Twenty-eight percent of the girls in that age range were doing the same.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have to understand, you know, that what pornography teaches is the counterfeit of healthy sexuality the way God designed it.\u00a0 So maybe your daughter isn\u2019t using it, but what about the boy she might be dating?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday, August and the internet, and our kids.\u00a0 You used to stand over your kids and watch them as they chatted online with\u2014I don\u2019t even know if kids chat as much as they used to ten years ago?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, it\u2019s texting now.\u00a0 They barely use email anymore; but they have all these acronyms that they use to say, you know, \u201cParent over my shoulder,\u201d or something.\u00a0 (laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s some letter that spells that out?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 In fact, I want our guest on today\u2019s broadcast, Donna Rice Hughes, to just share a few of the most popular acronyms.\u00a0 Donna is the President and Chairman of Enough Is Enough,\u201d which is an internationally-known internet safety organization, training parents, government agencies, and children all to avoid the dangers of the internet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn your training guide that I looked over, you had a whole list of these little acronyms used\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are you talking about like \u201clol\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, \u201claugh out loud.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Everybody knows \u201clol\u201d right?\u00a0 But do you know what \u201crofl\u201d is?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201crofl\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201crofl\u201d\u2014You don\u2019t know that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201crofl\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 That\u2019s, \u201cRolling on the floor laughing.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s when something\u2019s really funny.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, okay.\u00a0 I thought it was something about listening to <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How about \u201cbrb\u201d?\u00a0 Do you know \u201cbrb\u201d?\u00a0 That\u2019s, \u201cBe right back.\u201d\u00a0 Oh, you\u2019ve got to get with this stuff! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cbtw\u201d \u201cBy the way.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you\u2019re not the expert.\u00a0 She\u2019s the expert.\u00a0 Go ahead, Donna.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, there are a lot of them.\u00a0 There is a whole new language that kids are using.\u00a0 One of the reasons is the texting because you\u2019re limited to a certain number of letters, and words, and sentences in a text, and even less on Twitter.\u00a0 So you have to be able to say it quickly and everything else.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome of the ones that are common are \u201casl\u201d \u2013\u201cAge, sex, and location.\u201d\u00a0 Some of the ones that, for instance, a predator might use would be \u201cgnoc\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cgnoc\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or even teenagers talking to each other.\u00a0 \u201cgnoc\u201d \u2013 \u201cGet naked on camera.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 There are lots of these that we have in our book because there are hundreds and hundreds of just normal ones, but we put some of the trickier ones that we want parents to know.\u00a0 If they see some of these things that look really benign, then they need to go, \u201cOh, my goodness!\u201d\u00a0 Some of them I can\u2019t even really say.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are you saying that an average teenager would know what most of these are?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s one that is \u201clmirl\u201d \u2013 \u201cLet\u2019s meet in real life\u201d; \u201cnifoc\u201d \u2013 \u201cNude in front of camera\u201d; \u201cp911\u201d \u2013 \u201cParent alert\u201d; \u201cpal\u201d \u2013 \u201cParents are listening\u201d; \u201cpaw\u201d \u2013 \u201cParents are watching\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, \u201cpron\u201d is \u201cporn\u201d because some of the filters will catch \u201cporn\u201d but not \u201cp-r-o-n.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKids are good.\u00a0 You know, we go back to that perfect storm.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got very savvy kids.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got savvy predators.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got savvy pornographers, and unsavvy parents!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo what we\u2019re trying to do in our program is get that good parent to become a good cyber-savvy parent who is on top of their game\u2014they know what their kids are doing and they understand the dangers.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to be able to parent these kids online during these tough years\u2014junior high and high school.\u00a0 You know, the kids are just really sitting ducks for some big problems with the misuse of technology.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think the average parent realizes there\u2019s a danger; but as Bob mentioned earlier, I do think there\u2019s a tendency to go to sleep at the stick and just kind of get lulled into a sense of, \u201cYou know what, we\u2019ve got it covered.\u00a0 We\u2019re protected.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou tell a story about a mother who had a little boy; I mean, only 11 years of age.\u00a0 Is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 --who started finding porn sites; and in a matter of days was exposed to unimaginable images?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 The DVD teaching series\u2014we divided into four parts.\u00a0 The first is called \u201cPornography 101.\u201d\u00a0 At the end of each segment, we have someone come up on stage with me and we do Q&amp;A with the audience.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRene is a friend of mine, and she is a law professor.\u00a0 We pick people when we tell these stories that we believe parents can relate to.\u00a0 We want to put a face on the problem and for parents to be able to say, \u201cWow!\u00a0 I can relate to that mom,\u201d \u201cI can relate to that family,\u201d or \u201cThat little girl looks just like my child.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo Rene\u2019s husband found all this pornography and first came to her and said, \u201cRene, is there something you want to tell me?\u201d\u00a0 (thinking it was Rene)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey found out it was their 11-year-old son, who had stumbled into pornography and had become very highly addicted almost immediately.\u00a0 They found hundreds of pictures.\u00a0 He is still struggling today.\u00a0 He\u2019s a young man, but he\u2019s doing a lot better.\u00a0 Thank goodness he was in a Christian home, and they\u2019ve done everything that they can.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe point is that this material is toxic.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have one young man that I interviewed.\u00a0 He said, \u201cEven if you\u2019re not looking for it, it will find you.\u201d\u00a0 Another young girl, Courtney, talks about how these young women, especially who get into this material, start wanting to act and behave like the girls in pornography.\u00a0 When they\u2019re in sexual relationships, the guys expect them to perform this way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne young man also shared how he got so hooked on it that it wasn\u2019t about sex anymore.\u00a0 It was about just having sex with as many girls as he could.\u00a0 It was just meaningless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason that we share these stories is that we want people to realize this material is harmful.\u00a0 You know, you can never erase it from your mind.\u00a0 It\u2019s so easily assessable by these kids, and younger and younger kids are getting exposed all the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, of course, with all the new technologies, whether it\u2019s a Smartphone\u00ae or anything else, the pornographers are right on top of that.\u00a0 The thing that parents need to realize is that their children can get tripped up into this, not looking for it; and then it\u2019s very hard to get out.\u00a0 Our whole theme is prevention.\u00a0 An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou need to get on top of the game and really start talking to them about how to use the technology safely, about what some of the pitfalls are (of course, use age-appropriate language and that sort of thing).\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes, Rene tells a powerful story at the end.\u00a0 She\u2019s quite convincing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I started listening to the amount of money\u2014you mentioned earlier $13 billion industry.\u00a0 Where do they sell their smut?\u00a0 They\u2019re not selling to kids, are they?\u00a0 I mean, you\u2019re not talking about being able to have commerce with children under the age of 16?\u00a0 They don\u2019t have a credit card.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s important to recognize that all of the commercial pornographers who have websites\u2014and there\u2019s also a whole growing trend with amateur pornography, by the way\u2014they put free pictures and free videos on their home pages.\u00a0 We call them free- teaser images.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe whole design is to trap you into this material.\u00a0 Then, if you try to get out of it, you can just see the spiritual warfare here\u2014you hit the back button and what happens is you get looped into another image of a different variety.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTheir whole marketing tactic is to keep you there until you\u2019re defenses go down, down, down.\u00a0 All of a sudden, they have lured you in.\u00a0 It\u2019s not until you\u2019re well deep enough into the site that you actually have to give a credit card; but with all of the hundreds of thousands of porn sites, kids can get a lot of material without ever having to pay for any of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, sometimes they will.\u00a0 I have some kids on our DVD teaching series who talk about how they did steal credit cards to buy it because they wanted to see more than what was offered on the porn sites.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And the reason the pornographers are trying to lure kids in is they hook them at an early age?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 They hook them at an early age.\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So by the time they\u2019re 18, 19, or 20 and they do have a credit card\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019ve got them hooked.\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Donna, there are some of our listeners who are driving along, listening right now; and a mom is thinking to herself, \u201cBoy, I am glad I have girls because if I had boys, I would really have to worry about this; but with daughters, it\u2019s not an issue.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it is an issue.\u00a0 There was a study just in 2009 of kids aged 12 to 15 years old.\u00a0 Fifty-three percent of the boys said that they\u2019re using graphic pornography, depicting genital contact.\u00a0 Twenty-eight percent of the girls in that age range were doing the same.\u00a0 These kids were surveyed from 14 public schools in the Southeast United States of America.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So one in four girls and one in two boys\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 --ages 12 to 15\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 --ages 12 to graphic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And what I would want to underline there is, \u201cYour son or your daughter may not be the \u2018one,\u2019 but they may be friends with the \u2018one.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And so here we go with peer pressure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is how pornography spreads.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you have to understand that what pornography teaches is the counterfeit of healthy sexuality the way God designed it.\u00a0 Maybe your daughter isn\u2019t using it, but what about the boy she might be dating?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s a lot of pressure now on young girls when they start dating, especially with the guys, to act out.\u00a0 The guys now\u2014many of them become very entrenched in this, you know.\u00a0 So there\u2019s a lot of acting out that goes on as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How do you see all of this impacting these young people as they start dating and then later on get married?\u00a0 How is that impacting their marriage relationship?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, one of the things that we do know about pornography and its harms is that it really impedes intimacy, whether it\u2019s adults who are dealing with this or young people as they\u2019re becoming adults.\u00a0 You know, it can really defile the marriage bed in a lot of ways.\u00a0 This is where accountability is so important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, you know, that real healing can occur.\u00a0 We explore in our program the brain studies that have been done that actually show the brain not on pornography and the brain on pornography.\u00a0 I talk to one of the top experts in the country.\u00a0 You\u2019re actually rewiring the brain and the brain chemistry with continued use of this material.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think if I was a parent right now\u2014and I\u2019m thinking of my adult children:\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a son who\u2019s got four daughters and a daughter who\u2019s got five sons.\u00a0 I just think of them growing up in this age.\u00a0 More than likely \u2013more than likely\u2014at some point, as my children raise their children, they\u2019re going to find out that their children have found pornography.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s a parent to do if they find out that their child has stumbled onto a site or has visited a site repeatedly?\u00a0 How should they handle that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, there are a lot of warning signs.\u00a0 One is that the computer can just go blank.\u00a0 You may find an unusual curiosity about sex at an inappropriate age and that kind of thing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the very first thing, and this would be for finding out your kid has stumbled into pornography or is actually using pornography\u2014and the same thing with interacting with a predator or anything else\u2014you have to remember not to overreact because what you want to be is a trusted place where that child can come and not feel shame.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome of the kids we interviewed said, \u201cYou know, I could talk to my parents about my drug use, or my alcohol use, or even if I was having sex or something like that;\u201d but when it comes to pornography, there\u2019s a lot of shame around that because it is often done in secret.\u00a0 It\u2019s very difficult for these kids to talk to their parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it is really, really important that the parents understand first of all, that there is a strong likelihood the kid came across it accidentally; but even if they didn\u2019t, they need to be a safe place and be able to, then, provide counseling.\u00a0 If that child is really hooked, there are good counselors who know how to work with them, to love them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got the kids at the end of the \u201cPornography 101\u201d segment saying, \u201cDon\u2019t shame them.\u00a0 Don\u2019t make them feel bad.\u00a0 We already feel dirty enough.\u201d\u00a0 This is what the enemy does, doesn\u2019t he?\u00a0 When he pulls us into temptation and we get into areas of sin, then he just puts that guilt\u2014and guilt, and wants us to keep it a secret, and keep it in darkness.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat the parent can be is a place for it to come into the light\u2014where there\u2019s not that judgment; there\u2019s that unconditional love of Jesus\u2014you know\u2014and recognizing that there is hope.\u00a0 The kids can come out of it.\u00a0 In some cases, it may require a lot of counseling for a long time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just curious how your materials are designed to be used.\u00a0 Explain what you\u2019ve created and what\u2019s a best-case scenario, either for parents doing this with their kids or for small group use.\u00a0 How do you see this material being used most effectively?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we created this to be what we call a \u201cplug and play program.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s a multi-media program.\u00a0 It\u2019s a four-part DVD series.\u00a0 I do most of the teaching on stage.\u00a0 It\u2019s very research-based and that kind of thing in front of a live audience.\u00a0 Then, we punctuate what we\u2019re teaching with documentary-style video vignettes throughout each of the three segments.\u00a0 Then, we have Q&amp;A at the end.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it can be used by individuals; it can be used by small groups or large groups.\u00a0 There\u2019s a workbook that goes along with it.\u00a0 If you\u2019re doing it in a small or large group, that\u2019s a great way to use this program.\u00a0 I kind of modeled it after the Kay Arthur\/Beth Moore model.\u00a0 Sometimes it\u2019s easier for parents to kind of go through something like this together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou don\u2019t need a facilitator or a trained expert because all of the experts are in the can.\u00a0 We interviewed clinicians, doctors, law enforcement\u2014went undercover with law enforcement, specifically on online gaming sites and that kind thing.\u00a0 We talked to teenagers and to parents.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we\u2019re trying to do is make this compelling.\u00a0 The stories are memorable.\u00a0 You might forget the facts; you might forget the statistics.\u00a0 That\u2019s okay.\u00a0 What you need to remember is that your child is not immune.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t take proactive measures, they\u2019re going to come across pornography.\u00a0 They could get hooked on it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe predators are going to have easy access to them, whether it\u2019s through instant messaging or a social networking site.\u00a0 Online gaming is a <em>huge <\/em>issue, where predators and pornographers are actually working through those online gaming areas.\u00a0 Cyber-bullying is another area that we deal with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt can be used in one full sitting.\u00a0 It\u2019s a little over two hours for all four segments; or you can break it up and have an \u201cInternet Safety\u201d course\u2014do three nights over the course of a month.\u00a0 It can be used in Sunday Schools, at PTAs.\u00a0 We\u2019re partnering with PTAs across the country, for instance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is this something that you would have parents and children watch together or just moms and dads?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 This was designed for parents, for educators, for grandparents, and even for law enforcement.\u00a0 So it\u2019s really designed for adults, but we have so many parents telling us that they\u2019ll show some parts of this to their kids because the little video vignettes that we use are very powerful.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got a lot of kids, ages 8 to 16 or 17, talking about these tough subjects.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me ask you about cyber-bullying because I\u2019ve heard that phrase.\u00a0 Honestly, I mean, it just sounds like, \u201cOkay, so somebody comes online and says mean things about you.\u201d\u00a0 I go, \u201cOkay.\u00a0 Get over it.\u201d\u00a0 Is there more to cyber-bullying than just people saying mean things about you on the internet?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, there\u2019s a lot to cyber-bullying.\u00a0 I would say that it\u2019s epidemic.\u00a0 Well, the latest statistic is that it\u2019s about 43 percent of young people who say that they\u2019ve been cyber-bullied.\u00a0 I think that it\u2019s really growing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe problem with cyber-bullying, as opposed to just bullying on the playground as we used to know it, is that it\u2019s 24\/7 because the kids\u2019 cyber lives and physical lives have really merged.\u00a0 They\u2019re really one.\u00a0 They often can\u2019t really separate the cyber world from the physical world.\u00a0 So now, if you have a bullying situation, it\u2019s following that child 24\/7; and it can be relentless.\u00a0 The other thing is that it can go viral very, very fast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, it used to be that somebody wrote something bad about somebody on the bathroom wall.\u00a0 You can go clean it off, scrub it off; but if you have a gossip situation, that can go viral across a whole school, a whole county, a whole state, just in a matter of an hour!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can you give an example of a cyber-bullying scenario that has been something that\u2019s been harmful for a teenager or not?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, one of the stories that we tell in our program:\u00a0 A mother tells of her boy and another boy\u2014who was more the instigator\u2014actually stood up on a toilet in the stalls of the bathroom at school.\u00a0 He took pictures of another little boy going to the bathroom in the other stall.\u00a0 Then they spread that all across their school.\u00a0 It was just devastating, of course, to the little boy whose privacy had been invaded.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s just one simple case.\u00a0 We\u2019ve seen so many instances of suicides because these kids feel hopeless.\u00a0 They don\u2019t necessarily think that they can ever get beyond this and that their lives have been destroyed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnything that you can think of creatively as a way that you could abuse the technology and hurt somebody, kids are thinking of these things; and they\u2019re doing it to each other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are a lot of signs to be aware of.\u00a0 One of them is if your kid loves the technology and then starts avoiding the technology.\u00a0 That\u2019s a really <em>big<\/em> red flag that there could be some cyber-bullying going on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Donna, if you were instructing a group of parents, what\u2019s the ideal age for them to go through this material, maybe with a group of other parents?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You mean, \u201cWhen their kids are what age, should they go through it?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that they should go through it as soon as possible\u2014at least by the time that the kids are four or five years old.\u00a0 It\u2019s important because kids are going to be introduced to this technology in kindergarten and first grade.\u00a0 Alright?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo that\u2019s a good time to start having technology safety talks because if you\u2019re growing your children up in the area where they\u2019re understanding that Mom and Dad love them and care, and that they want them to use this technology and use it safely, then by the time they get to be a pre-teen and they\u2019re pushing the envelope or a teenager and saying, \u201cWell what about my privacy?,\u201d and that kind of thing, you\u2019ve already parented them to understand that you are the parent and you love and care about them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey can use the technology, but there are some bad things out there.\u00a0 As parents, it\u2019s the parents\u2019 job to make sure their kids are safe.\u00a0 The earlier you start; the better.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I\u2019m hearing you say is that parents need to have a proactive game plan\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 They do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As their kids move into first grade and beyond.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If they don\u2019t, the world <em>does<\/em> have a game plan for your son and your daughter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would encourage parents, who are really looking, maybe, to get together with a handful of other parents whose children are the same age as yours.\u00a0 It could be that the relationships you forge in that small group, going through Donna\u2019s material here called <em>Internet Safety 101, <\/em>will really help guide all of those children all of the way through the adolescent years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I really appreciate the fact that you\u2019ve made this DVD series very and the internet, and our kids.\u00a0 You used to stand over your kids and watch them as they chatted online with\u2014I don\u2019t even know if kids chat as much as they used to ten years ago?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, it\u2019s texting now.\u00a0 They barely use email anymore; but they have all these acronyms that they use to say, you know, \u201cParent over my shoulder,\u201d or something.\u00a0 (laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s some letter that spells that out?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 In fact, I want our guest on today\u2019s broadcast, Donna Rice Hughes, to just share a few of the most popular acronyms.\u00a0 Donna is the President and Chairman of Enough Is Enough,\u201d which is an internationally-known internet safety organization, training parents, government agencies, and children all to avoid the dangers of the internet. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn your training guide that I looked over, you had a whole list of these little acronyms used\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are you talking about like \u201clol\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, \u201claugh out loud.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Everybody knows \u201clol\u201d right?\u00a0 But do you know what \u201crofl\u201d is?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201crofl\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201crofl\u201d\u2014You don\u2019t know that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201crofl\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 That\u2019s, \u201cRolling on the floor laughing.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s when something\u2019s really funny.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, okay.\u00a0 I thought it was something about listening to <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How about \u201cbrb\u201d?\u00a0 Do you know \u201cbrb\u201d?\u00a0 That\u2019s, \u201cBe right back.\u201d\u00a0 Oh, you\u2019ve got to get with this stuff! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cbtw\u201d \u201cBy the way.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you\u2019re not the expert.\u00a0 She\u2019s the expert.\u00a0 Go ahead, Donna.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, there are a lot of them.\u00a0 There is a whole new language that kids are using.\u00a0 One of the reasons is the texting because you\u2019re limited to a certain number of letters, and words, and sentences in a text, and even less on Twitter.\u00a0 So you have to be able to say it quickly and everything else.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome of the ones that are common are \u201casl\u201d \u2013\u201cAge, sex, and location.\u201d\u00a0 Some of the ones that, for instance, a predator might use would be \u201cgnoc\u201d\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cgnoc\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or even teenagers talking to each other.\u00a0 \u201cgnoc\u201d \u2013 \u201cGet naked on camera.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\u00a0 There are lots of these that we have in our book because there are hundreds and hundreds of just normal ones, but we put some of the trickier ones that we want parents to know.\u00a0 If they see some of these things that look really benign, then they need to go, \u201cOh, my goodness!\u201d\u00a0 Some of them I can\u2019t even really say.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are you saying that an average teenager would know what most of these are?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s one that is \u201clmirl\u201d \u2013 \u201cLet\u2019s meet in real life\u201d; \u201cnifoc\u201d \u2013 \u201cNude in front of camera\u201d; \u201cp911\u201d \u2013 \u201cParent alert\u201d; \u201cpal\u201d \u2013 \u201cParents are listening\u201d; \u201cpaw\u201d \u2013 \u201cParents are watching\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, \u201cpron\u201d is \u201cporn\u201d because some of the filters will catch \u201cporn\u201d but not \u201cp-r-o-n.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKids are good.\u00a0 You know, we go back to that perfect storm.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got very savvy kids.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got savvy predators.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got savvy pornographers, and unsavvy parents!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo what we\u2019re trying to do in our program is get that good parent to become a good cyber-savvy parent who is on top of their game\u2014they know what their kids are doing and they understand the dangers.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to be able to parent these kids online during these tough years\u2014junior high and high school.\u00a0 You know, the kids are just really sitting ducks for some big problems with the misuse of technology.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think the average parent realizes there\u2019s a danger; but as Bob mentioned earlier, I do think there\u2019s a tendency to go to sleep at the stick and just kind of get lulled into a sense of, \u201cYou know what, we\u2019ve got it covered.\u00a0 We\u2019re protected.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou tell a story about a mother who had a little boy; I mean, only 11 years of age.\u00a0 Is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 --who started finding porn sites; and in a matter of days was exposed to unimaginable images?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 The DVD teaching series\u2014we divided into four parts.\u00a0 The first is called \u201cPornography 101.\u201d\u00a0 At the end of each segment, we have someone come up on stage with me and we do Q&amp;A with the audience.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRene is a friend of mine, and she is a law professor.\u00a0 We pick people when we tell these stories that we believe parents can relate to.\u00a0 We want to put a face on the problem and for parents to be able to say, \u201cWow!\u00a0 I can relate to that mom,\u201d \u201cI can relate to that family,\u201d or \u201cThat little girl looks just like my child.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo Rene\u2019s husband found all this pornography and first came to her and said, \u201cRene, is there something you want to tell me?\u201d\u00a0 (thinking it was Rene)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey found out it was their 11-year-old son, who had stumbled into pornography and had become very highly addicted almost immediately.\u00a0 They found hundreds of pictures.\u00a0 He is still struggling today.\u00a0 He\u2019s a young man, but he\u2019s doing a lot better.\u00a0 Thank goodness he was in a Christian home, and they\u2019ve done everything that they can.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe point is that this material is toxic.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe have one young man that I interviewed.\u00a0 He said, \u201cEven if you\u2019re not looking for it, it will find you.\u201d\u00a0 Another young girl, Courtney, talks about how these young women, especially who get into this material, start wanting to act and behave like the girls in pornography.\u00a0 When they\u2019re in sexual relationships, the guys expect them to perform this way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne young man also shared how he got so hooked on it that it wasn\u2019t about sex anymore.\u00a0 It was about just having sex with as many girls as he could.\u00a0 It was just meaningless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason that we share these stories is that we want people to realize this material is harmful.\u00a0 You know, you can never erase it from your mind.\u00a0 It\u2019s so easily assessable by these kids, and younger and younger kids are getting exposed all the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, of course, with all the new technologies, whether it\u2019s a Smartphone\u00ae or anything else, the pornographers are right on top of that.\u00a0 The thing that parents need to realize is that their children can get tripped up into this, not looking for it; and then it\u2019s very hard to get out.\u00a0 Our whole theme is prevention.\u00a0 An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou need to get on top of the game and really start talking to them about how to use the technology safely, about what some of the pitfalls are (of course, use age-appropriate language and that sort of thing).\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes, Rene tells a powerful story at the end.\u00a0 She\u2019s quite convincing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I started listening to the amount of money\u2014you mentioned earlier $13 billion industry.\u00a0 Where do they sell their smut?\u00a0 They\u2019re not selling to kids, are they?\u00a0 I mean, you\u2019re not talking about being able to have commerce with children under the age of 16?\u00a0 They don\u2019t have a credit card.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it\u2019s important to recognize that all of the commercial pornographers who have websites\u2014and there\u2019s also a whole growing trend with amateur pornography, by the way\u2014they put free pictures and free videos on their home pages.\u00a0 We call them free- teaser images.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe whole design is to trap you into this material.\u00a0 Then, if you try to get out of it, you can just see the spiritual warfare here\u2014you hit the back button and what happens is you get looped into another image of a different variety.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTheir whole marketing tactic is to keep you there until you\u2019re defenses go down, down, down.\u00a0 All of a sudden, they have lured you in.\u00a0 It\u2019s not until you\u2019re well deep enough into the site that you actually have to give a credit card; but with all of the hundreds of thousands of porn sites, kids can get a lot of material without ever having to pay for any of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, sometimes they will.\u00a0 I have some kids on our DVD teaching series who talk about how they did steal credit cards to buy it because they wanted to see more than what was offered on the porn sites.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And the reason the pornographers are trying to lure kids in is they hook them at an early age?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 They hook them at an early age.\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So by the time they\u2019re 18, 19, or 20 and they do have a credit card\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019ve got them hooked.\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Donna, there are some of our listeners who are driving along, listening right now; and a mom is thinking to herself, \u201cBoy, I am glad I have girls because if I had boys, I would really have to worry about this; but with daughters, it\u2019s not an issue.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it is an issue.\u00a0 There was a study just in 2009 of kids aged 12 to 15 years old.\u00a0 Fifty-three percent of the boys said that they\u2019re using graphic pornography, depicting genital contact.\u00a0 Twenty-eight percent of the girls in that age range were doing the same.\u00a0 These kids were surveyed from 14 public schools in the Southeast United States of America.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So one in four girls and one in two boys\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 --ages 12 to 15\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 --ages 12 to 15\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 --looking at\u2014 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 --<em>graphic\u2014<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>--graphic pornography.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Very graphic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And what I would want to underline there is, \u201cYour son or your daughter may not be the \u2018one,\u2019 but they may be friends with the \u2018one.\u2019\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And so here we go with peer pressure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is how pornography spreads.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you have to understand that what pornography teaches is the counterfeit of healthy sexuality the way God designed it.\u00a0 Maybe your daughter isn\u2019t using it, but what about the boy she might be dating?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s a lot of pressure now on young girls when they start dating, especially with the guys, to act out.\u00a0 The guys now\u2014many of them become very entrenched in this, you know.\u00a0 So there\u2019s a lot of acting out that goes on as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How do you see all of this impacting these young people as they start dating and then later on get married?\u00a0 How is that impacting their marriage relationship?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, one of the things that we do know about pornography and its harms is that it really impedes intimacy, whether it\u2019s adults who are dealing with this or young people as they\u2019re becoming adults.\u00a0 You know, it can really defile the marriage bed in a lot of ways.\u00a0 This is where accountability is so important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think, you know, that real healing can occur.\u00a0 We explore in our program the brain studies that have been done that actually show the brain not on pornography and the brain on pornography.\u00a0 I talk to one of the top experts in the country.\u00a0 You\u2019re actually rewiring the brain and the brain chemistry with continued use of this material.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think if I was a parent right now\u2014and I\u2019m thinking of my adult children:\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a son who\u2019s got four daughters and a daughter who\u2019s got five sons.\u00a0 I just think of them growing up in this age.\u00a0 More than likely \u2013more than likely\u2014at some point, as my children raise their children, they\u2019re going to find out that their children have found pornography.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat\u2019s a parent to do if they find out that their child has stumbled onto a site or has visited a site repeatedly?\u00a0 How should they handle that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, there are a lot of warning signs.\u00a0 One is that the computer can just go blank.\u00a0 You may find an unusual curiosity about sex at an inappropriate age and that kind of thing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the very first thing, and this would be for finding out your kid has stumbled into pornography or is actually using pornography\u2014and the same thing with interacting with a predator or anything else\u2014you have to remember not to overreact because what you want to be is a trusted place where that child can come and not feel shame.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome of the kids we interviewed said, \u201cYou know, I could talk to my parents about my drug use, or my alcohol use, or even if I was having sex or something like that;\u201d but when it comes to pornography, there\u2019s a lot of shame around that because it is often done in secret.\u00a0 It\u2019s very difficult for these kids to talk to their parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it is really, really important that the parents understand first of all, that there is a strong likelihood the kid came across it accidentally; but even if they didn\u2019t, they need to be a safe place and be able to, then, provide counseling.\u00a0 If that child is really hooked, there are good counselors who know how to work with them, to love them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019ve got the kids at the end of the \u201cPornography 101\u201d segment saying, \u201cDon\u2019t shame them.\u00a0 Don\u2019t make them feel bad.\u00a0 We already feel dirty enough.\u201d\u00a0 This is what the enemy does, doesn\u2019t he?\u00a0 When he pulls us into temptation and we get into areas of sin, then he just puts that guilt\u2014and guilt, and wants us to keep it a secret, and keep it in darkness.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat the parent can be is a place for it to come into the light\u2014where there\u2019s not that judgment; there\u2019s that unconditional love of Jesus\u2014you know\u2014and recognizing that there is hope.\u00a0 The kids can come out of it.\u00a0 In some cases, it may require a lot of counseling for a long time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just curious how your materials are designed to be used.\u00a0 Explain what you\u2019ve created and what\u2019s a best-case scenario, either for parents doing this with their kids or for small group use.\u00a0 How do you see this material being used most effectively?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we created this to be what we call a \u201cplug and play program.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s a multi-media program.\u00a0 It\u2019s a four-part DVD series.\u00a0 I do most of the teaching on stage.\u00a0 It\u2019s very research-based and that kind of thing in front of a live audience.\u00a0 Then, we punctuate what we\u2019re teaching with documentary-style video vignettes throughout each of the three segments.\u00a0 Then, we have Q&amp;A at the end.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it can be used by individuals; it can be used by small groups or large groups.\u00a0 There\u2019s a workbook that goes along with it.\u00a0 If you\u2019re doing it in a small or large group, that\u2019s a great way to use this program.\u00a0 I kind of modeled it after the Kay Arthur\/Beth Moore model.\u00a0 Sometimes it\u2019s easier for parents to kind of go through something like this together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou don\u2019t need a facilitator or a trained expert because all of the experts are in the can.\u00a0 We interviewed clinicians, doctors, law enforcement\u2014went undercover with law enforcement, specifically on online gaming sites and that kind thing.\u00a0 We talked to teenagers and to parents.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we\u2019re trying to do is make this compelling.\u00a0 The stories are memorable.\u00a0 You might forget the facts; you might forget the statistics.\u00a0 That\u2019s okay.\u00a0 What you need to remember is that your child is not immune.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t take proactive measures, they\u2019re going to come across pornography.\u00a0 They could get hooked on it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe predators are going to have easy access to them, whether it\u2019s through instant messaging or a social networking site.\u00a0 Online gaming is a <em>huge <\/em>issue, where predators and pornographers are actually working through those online gaming areas.\u00a0 Cyber-bullying is another area that we deal with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt can be used in one full sitting.\u00a0 It\u2019s a little over two hours for all four segments; or you can break it up and have an \u201cInternet Safety\u201d course\u2014do three nights over the course of a month.\u00a0 It can be used in Sunday Schools, at PTAs.\u00a0 We\u2019re partnering with PTAs across the country, for instance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is this something that you would have parents and children watch together or just moms and dads?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 This was designed for parents, for educators, for grandparents, and even for law enforcement.\u00a0 So it\u2019s really designed for adults, but we have so many parents telling us that they\u2019ll show some parts of this to their kids because the little video vignettes that we use are very powerful.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got a lot of kids, ages 8 to 16 or 17, talking about these tough subjects.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me ask you about cyber-bullying because I\u2019ve heard that phrase.\u00a0 Honestly, I mean, it just sounds like, \u201cOkay, so somebody comes online and says mean things about you.\u201d\u00a0 I go, \u201cOkay.\u00a0 Get over it.\u201d\u00a0 Is there more to cyber-bullying than just people saying mean things about you on the internet?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, there\u2019s a lot to cyber-bullying.\u00a0 I would say that it\u2019s epidemic.\u00a0 Well, the latest statistic is that it\u2019s about 43 percent of young people who say that they\u2019ve been cyber-bullied.\u00a0 I think that it\u2019s really growing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe problem with cyber-bullying, as opposed to just bullying on the playground as we used to know it, is that it\u2019s 24\/7 because the kids\u2019 cyber lives and physical lives have really merged.\u00a0 They\u2019re really one.\u00a0 They often can\u2019t really separate the cyber world from the physical world.\u00a0 So now, if you have a bullying situation, it\u2019s following that child 24\/7; and it can be relentless.\u00a0 The other thing is that it can go viral very, very fast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, it used to be that somebody wrote something bad about somebody on the bathroom wall.\u00a0 You can go clean it off, scrub it off; but if you have a gossip situation, that can go viral across a whole school, a whole county, a whole state, just in a matter of an hour!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can you give an example of a cyber-bullying scenario that has been something that\u2019s been harmful for a teenager or not?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, one of the stories that we tell in our program:\u00a0 A mother tells of her boy and another boy\u2014who was more the instigator\u2014actually stood up on a toilet in the stalls of the bathroom at school.\u00a0 He took pictures of another little boy going to the bathroom in the other stall.\u00a0 Then they spread that all across their school.\u00a0 It was just devastating, of course, to the little boy whose privacy had been invaded.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s just one simple case.\u00a0 We\u2019ve seen so many instances of suicides because these kids feel hopeless.\u00a0 They don\u2019t necessarily think that they can ever get beyond this and that their lives have been destroyed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnything that you can think of creatively as a way that you could abuse the technology and hurt somebody, kids are thinking of these things; and they\u2019re doing it to each other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are a lot of signs to be aware of.\u00a0 One of them is if your kid loves the technology and then starts avoiding the technology.\u00a0 That\u2019s a really <em>big<\/em> red flag that there could be some cyber-bullying going on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Donna, if you were instructing a group of parents, what\u2019s the ideal age for them to go through this material, maybe with a group of other parents?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You mean, \u201cWhen their kids are what age, should they go through it?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that they should go through it as soon as possible\u2014at least by the time that the kids are four or five years old.\u00a0 It\u2019s important because kids are going to be introduced to this technology in kindergarten and first grade.\u00a0 Alright?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo that\u2019s a good time to start having technology safety talks because if you\u2019re growing your children up in the area where they\u2019re understanding that Mom and Dad love them and care, and that they want them to use this technology and use it safely, then by the time they get to be a pre-teen and they\u2019re pushing the envelope or a teenager and saying, \u201cWell what about my privacy?,\u201d and that kind of thing, you\u2019ve already parented them to understand that you are the parent and you love and care about them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey can use the technology, but there are some bad things out there.\u00a0 As parents, it\u2019s the parents\u2019 job to make sure their kids are safe.\u00a0 The earlier you start; the better.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I\u2019m hearing you say is that parents need to have a proactive game plan\u2014\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 They do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As their kids move into first grade and beyond.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Donna:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If they don\u2019t, the world <em>does<\/em> have a game plan for your son and your daughter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would encourage parents, who are really looking, maybe, to get together with a handful of other parents whose children are the same age as yours.\u00a0 It could be that the relationships you forge in that small group, going through Donna\u2019s material here called <em>Internet Safety 101, <\/em>will really help guide all of those children all of the way through the adolescent years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I really appreciate the fact that you\u2019ve made this DVD series very
