I think we may have found the subject.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If I was taking a final in your class, what would one of the questions be, for example?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, I might have an incline plane and a block on it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014with a rope holding it up\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and a pulley and another block.\u00a0 Then, the one block is heavier than the other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, it\u2019s kind of falling.\u00a0 The block that\u2019s heavier is falling\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Falling.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 The other one is going up the incline plane.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m getting this.\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Find the acceleration of the system.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The acceleration of this system.\u00a0 Well, it depends on the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The answer is?\u00a0 The only term that Bob knows is fulcrum.\u00a0 Fulcrum.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Fulcrum.\u00a0 There is a fulcrum at play, isn\u2019t there?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is that the answer to the question?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not really.\u00a0 No.\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 That might get you half a point, though.\u00a0 I\u2019d give you something.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ll leave that subject.\u00a0 Alex is an author, a speaker.\u00a0 He and his wife Marni have three children.\u00a0 They live in Riverside, California.\u00a0 He is a professor at California Baptist University.\u00a0 Let\u2019s talk about spiritual life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the things you write about in your book is that 24percent of all professors on the college campus profess to be\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Secular university campus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Profess to be atheists.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or agnostics.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The national average on this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 About four percent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, a higher than average percentage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Six times greater.\u00a0 It actually gets even higher if you go to the more elite schools, like Berkley, Stanford, Yale, or MIT.\u00a0 The more elite the university, in terms of its reputation, the higher the percentage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is that the idea that the smarter you get, the more atheistic or agnostic\u2014I mean it\u2019s kind of an interesting\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 The more foolish you get, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Pretty interesting correlation there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it probably also says something about discrimination and kind of a one- track mind in higher education.\u00a0 In secular higher education, there is pressure to believe that there is no such thing as absolute truth or that any kind of religious framework that would tell you how to live or tell someone else how to live is faulty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Part of having a liberal education is the idea that you\u2019re open to all kinds of different ideas that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 You would think.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014you haven\u2019t locked in on anything dogmatically except maybe in the sciences and in mathematics, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the things I talk about is one of the things we hear as Christians in our culture is that we\u2019re supposed to be tolerant.\u00a0 What tolerant supposedly means, according to our world, is that, \u201cWhat\u2019s true for you, is true for you and what\u2019s true for me, is true for me,\u201d (even though they are totally contradictory).\u00a0 There is no such thing as absolute truth or objective truth that would somehow have bearing on your life and mine.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou think about what the word, \u201ctolerance,\u201d has historically meant.\u00a0 What it has meant is being tolerant, gracious, or accepting of somebody who is different than you.\u00a0 Let\u2019s suppose I have a friend who is a Muslim.\u00a0 Being tolerant would be saying, \u201cOkay, I think your faith is incorrect.\u00a0 I think Jesus Christ is the way to God, but I\u2019m still going to love you, respect you, be kind towards you, be able to work on my math homework with you; but I still think you\u2019re wrong, and you, of course, think that I\u2019m wrong.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is true tolerance.\u00a0 It\u2019s holding a belief, yet, not killing other people over it.\u00a0 What our world says is tolerant is, \u201cNo, you\u2019re not even allowed to think I\u2019m wrong.\u00a0 You think I\u2019m wrong; that\u2019s just true for you.\u00a0 What\u2019s true for me is true for me.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s not tolerance at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You went to the University of California at Berkley.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s not exactly known as\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Go Bears!\u00a0 (laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 We\u2019ll allow for that advertisement.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ll allow for that advertisement.\u00a0 We lose in football to the South all the time.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know why.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is a reason.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is there?\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 None of them take physics.\u00a0 (laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 In the South, that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You went to the University, though, in Berkley.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were a Christian.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How did you survive that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think it\u2019s just about going there and having the standpoint of, \u201cI am here to grow in my profession, but also to grow in my faith.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to identify myself with God\u2019s people.\u201d\u00a0 I think finding a good church, identifying yourself as a Christian from day one.\u00a0 Say, \u201cI\u2019m here.\u00a0 I\u2019m a Christian.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to find a church to plug into.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to find other Christians on campus that I can connect with, commiserate with, go through life together with, and just share our common experience with.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Would you say your spiritual foundation was really solid and locked in before you got to Berkley? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I think it was.\u00a0 I was a graduate student, as well.\u00a0 So, I was a little bit older.\u00a0 It\u2019s not exactly a one-for- one correspondence.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to an undergraduate school, also a secular school, called Alfred University.\u00a0 There, I was\u2014it was a non-Christian school.\u00a0 I was less grounded in my faith at that time.\u00a0 I was grounded enough to know, \u201cYou know what, I better find a church pretty quickly; and I better find other Christians on campus pretty quickly.\u201d\u00a0 If you don\u2019t do those two things within the first couple of months, the data is not very promising.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I have to tell you when I\u2019ve been on college visits with my sons and my daughters over the years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014we walk through the dorms.\u00a0 One of the things I\u2019m looking for on the dorm bulletin boards as we get the tour of the dorms are the posters about Bible study going on here\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014or about campus ministry meeting here or what\u2019s going on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If I don\u2019t see that stuff\u2014and I remember being at one very prestigious university and walking through the dorms and seeing nothing that indicated anything spiritual.\u00a0 I asked our tour guide.\u00a0 I said, \u201cAre there any campus ministries on this campus?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She said, \u201cI think there\u2019s one InterVarsity something.\u201d\u00a0 So, I checked online.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I called the head of InterVarsity.\u00a0 I said, \u201cTell me about what\u2019s going on.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWell, there are four of us who meet right now.\u00a0 We\u2019re trying to figure out how to get it bigger.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that doesn\u2019t sound promising.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I thought\u2014I\u2019m thinking, \u201cThis is a great college.\u00a0 This would be a great place to get a degree from, but I don\u2019t know how my son or daughter would survive spiritually in that kind of environment.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want to send your son or daughter off to a place where they\u2019re going to lose their faith--\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014while they gain professional excellence.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a niece who is going to Texas A&amp;M.\u00a0 I went to her graduation and had a chance to kind of put my arm around her at one point.\u00a0 I said, \u201cNow, when you get there as a freshman in a few months, I want you to look up this group called Breakaway.\u00a0 Breakaway meets at your basketball arena.\u00a0 It\u2019s a Bible study.\u00a0 It\u2019s a pretty good sized little Bible study.\u00a0 It has five, six, seven, ten thousand kids going to it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a lot of people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Her eyes got really big.\u00a0 Another young man who was there said, \u201cWhat did you call that?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI\u2019d like to know about that.\u201d\u00a0 I just want to underscore what you said here, Alex.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think one of the things that saved me as a young person going to a larger university after I had been to a junior college was when I arrived on campus (This was back in the days when 8,000 to 10,00 students was a big\u2014that was a big college campus back then).\u00a0 I arrived and immediately found a church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I also got involved in Campus Crusade for Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Those two in tandem\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 There you go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014were a great combo in terms of finding people to identify with\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and to be able to withstand some of the attacks on my faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely right.\u00a0 I think even before you choose a college, having a game plan and saying, \u201cI\u2019m going to go to this school.\u00a0 When I get there, I\u2019m going to consider these churches and these Christian organizations.\u201d\u00a0 Now, with the internet, there is no reason why that can\u2019t be done in advance.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome of what Bob was talking about when you\u2019re looking at a college, you can even know then.\u00a0 \u201cHey, this school has these opportunities to grow in my faith.\u201d\u00a0 If the school has nothing, then, you are right.\u00a0 Why get a world-class education and let your spiritual life shrivel up over four years?\u00a0 That\u2019s not worth it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, if you\u2019re a freshman and you haven\u2019t really had a chance to meet a whole lot of people\u2014because in classes you\u2019re not going to meet friends\u2014you\u2019re not going to build relationships typically because it is more of a lecture style.\u00a0 Somebody comes to you and says, \u201cHey, there\u2019s a big group of us going over to 15<sup>th<\/sup> Street\u2014\u201d\u00a0 Where I went to college, the place was called the Taproom. \u201c\u2014a big group of us going over to the Taproom tonight\u2014\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is that tap dancing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, it was not tap dancing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Something on the tap.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Something else on tap over there.\u00a0 They said, \u201cDo you want to come along?\u201d\u00a0 You think, \u201cWell, I would like to get to meet some people.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019d like to get to know some guys.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 You need to have an option.\u00a0 You need to have another option.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is one of those areas where some kids are just waiting for the chance to.\u00a0 \u201cDo they card you over there?\u00a0 No, they don\u2019t card you over there.\u00a0 Well, let\u2019s go.\u201d\u00a0 You know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How do you prepare a son or a daughter for what they\u2019re going to experience in terms of pressure to drink when they get to college?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just honestly talking about it.\u00a0 I mean, one of the things I think teens hunger for from their parents is honest dialogue about the faith\u2014to have their parents share with them, \u201cLook these are the struggles of young adult life,\u201d and to be very real and frank with them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA lot of teens, I find, are more eager to talk to those kinds of things: sexuality, alcohol, drugs.\u00a0 They\u2019re more eager to talk to Mom and Dad than sometimes the mom and dad are.\u00a0 They are more hungry for their parents\u2019 involvement in those areas of their life than sometimes the parents are uncomfortable or feeling bashful about bringing up sensitive topics.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I think just honest dialogue about, \u201cHey, these are the things that happen at college.\u201d\u00a0 Perhaps, if a parent struggled in that area and they sinned in those ways in college, just be honest.\u00a0 Say, \u201cI blew it in this way and this way in college.\u00a0 This is how God led me out of that.\u00a0 This is what I paid for that.\u00a0 These are the consequences that I reaped.\u00a0 This will not go well for you if you go that way.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor me, one of the things that I did that I thought was really helpful when I went to Alfred was I had some Christian friends that I already knew were there.\u00a0 It was a small school, only about 2,500, so the number of Christians wasn\u2019t going to be in the thousands, like what you were talking about, Dennis, earlier.\u00a0 It was 40 or 50.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I knew five or ten of them before I went.\u00a0 At least, I had, \u201cOkay, these are people I can kind of get together with, hang out with, develop friendships through them and not feel like I have to be a part of the party scene.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what you\u2019re talking about earlier, Bob, is sometimes a freshman feels, \u201cHey, if I\u2019m ever going to get to know anybody, I better go to the pub.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s the only place that\u2019s going\u2014that\u2019s the only social outlet I possibly have.\u201d\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s not the only opportunity.\u00a0 You just have to become aware of what the other outlets are.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think we got to be careful as we talk to our students that we don\u2019t simply say, \u201cLook, here\u2019s what can happen if you do go out drinking.\u00a0 Here are some consequences you can experience.\u201d\u00a0 I think we have to point them back to their relationship with Christ\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014presuming they have one\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and talk about living a life that honors Christ so that their motivation is not purely to avoid consequences\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014but their motivation really is to live in a way that\u2019s Christ-honoring.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 One of the things I talk about in <em>Thriving at College<\/em> quite a bit is that everything that we do in college should be the fruit of our walk with Christ.\u00a0 Our academics shouldn\u2019t be, \u201cHey, I want to get straight A\u2019s so that I get $100,000 when I get out of here.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s not a Christian motivation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA Christian motivation is, \u201cI want to honor God with my brain.\u00a0 I want to develop the intellectual gifts He\u2019s given me so that I can be prepared to serve Him in whatever profession He calls me,\u201d\u2014so, a godly motivation in the classroom, a godly motivation for finding friends, a godly motivation for using recreation times\u2014that would be an example.\u00a0 There is, \u201cHow does getting drunk on a Friday night help me grow in my walk with the Lord?\u201d\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t.\u00a0 That\u2019s the reason.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the things Barbara and I wrote about in our book, <em>Parenting Today\u2019s Adolescent<\/em>, was the principle of Daniel\u2014how he made up his mind in advance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Not to defile.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that he was going\u2014he knew what his convictions were before he faced the issue.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think there\u2019s the issue of drinking.\u00a0 There\u2019s also the issue of sex.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We all know what\u2019s taking place on the college campus today.\u00a0 There are no hours.\u00a0 Guys and gals can hang out in one another\u2019s rooms\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sometimes, they have the same bathrooms at some secular universities.\u00a0 They have a co-ed bathroom system sometimes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 So, you have to prepare your sons and daughters to know how to move from the controlled environment of home where there are expectations and standards to, \u201cAnything goes.\u201d\u00a0 In fact, most things are promoted at the college campus.\u00a0 What\u2019s the best advice a parent can give their child concerning these matters?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Four key principles, I think.\u00a0 Number One: \u201cOur God-given desire for intimacy, for physical and emotional intimacy\u2014it\u2019s God-given.\u201d\u00a0 In other words, a 17-year-old young man shouldn\u2019t be ashamed of his sex drive.\u00a0 That should not be a shameful thing.\u00a0 It is God-given in order to drive him ultimately to a lifelong partner in marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, \u201cWe get into trouble when we seek the benefits of marriage, sexual intercourse, apart from the associated costs of permanent commitment.\u201d\u00a0 God intended them to go together.\u00a0 So, in a marriage, that\u2019s the only place God made us to be intimate.\u00a0 That\u2019s where we\u2019re going to be able to safely enjoy it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThird thing is, \u201cThe purpose of one-on-one dating, of getting to know a great guy or great gal, is to see if the two should eventually marry.\u201d\u00a0 Take away that overarching long-term goal and purpose from the relationship\u2014basically, you run into problems because in some way one of them is using the other or you\u2019re basically mutually using one another\u2014looking for companionship, apart from any purpose to it.\u00a0 The purpose is preparing for marriage and seeing whether the two should marry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe fourth principle is, \u201cThe best way to really prepare for that relationship with a godly guy or girl is to become a very godly man or woman yourself.\u201d\u00a0 That way, you can best be able to attract somebody who has your same values.\u00a0 The main thing we\u2019re seeing, I think, is the problem on university campuses is this idea that we can separate emotionally intimacy from physical intimacy from commitment.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 All three.\u00a0 On the one hand, you see the hook-up scene and the dangers of the hook-up scene, which is really an idea that, \u201cI can have a physical relationship with somebody for whom I have no emotional connection so there\u2019s no emotional heartbreak.\u00a0 All it is\u2014is a physical act.\u00a0 I\u2019m like a dog going in and coming out, and that\u2019s it.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s all false sex is, is like two dogs.\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s not how God made us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe way that God made us to be physical, emotional, spiritual beings all together, which is why the hook-up scene is filled with heartache, heartbreak, misunderstanding, confusion, depression, anxiety.\u00a0 So, that doesn\u2019t work.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn a marriage, you see a husband and a wife enjoying both physical and emotional intimacy.\u00a0 One promotes the other.\u00a0 The relationship gets better and better sexually and emotionally as they know each other more, have more shared experiences.\u00a0 Their hearts are bound together in the commitment of marriage and over the time of the marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I think young people have to have a high view of marriage, first of all.\u00a0 God has ordained marriage to satisfy my longing for that level of intimacy.\u00a0 Then, to associate the dating activity with that as the purpose to find out whether this would be, \u201cGod would have us marry.\u00a0 I want to become the kind of person that\u2019s going to be a godly husband or a godly wife.\u00a0 I want to meet somebody who is high quality, and I want to move toward that relationship in a way that honors God by recognizing that God made the physical and emotional intimacy goes together.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As parents, we have the assignment of preparing our sons and daughters to make these choices in advance of facing the issue, whether its sex outside of marriage, drinking, their own Christian faith and how they\u2019re going to feed their faith long-haul.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlex, I really appreciate the work you\u2019ve done on your book, <em>Thriving at College.<\/em>\u00a0 It really is a great companion to a new resource we\u2019ve created here at FamilyLife called<em> College Ready\u00ae<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s a DVD series to prepare graduating high school seniors or incoming college freshmen to go to college on purpose and have a game plan in advance so that the next four or five years are not just lived out without intentionality; but they\u2019re purposeful about friendships, about dating, about their own Christian growth.\u00a0 That\u2019s what you\u2019re encouraging parents to do in this book, <em>Thriving at College<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just appreciate you and your heart for students.\u00a0 done.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now is the time.\u00a0 Now, your son or daughter is thinking, \u201cThis is happening.\u201d\u00a0 I remember at my own high school.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t think college was happening until the week before.\u00a0 That\u2019s when you start packing up the car.\u00a0 All of a sudden, now, \u201cIt\u2019s real.\u201d\u00a0 Now, they\u2019re more teachable than they ever were.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s happening.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here is the thing\u2014I would rather a son or daughter go through this material prior to facing the issue rather than playing defense\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in another six weeks, eight weeks, three months.\u00a0 I\u2019m telling you, they can move from an offensive position to defensive very quickly at college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, if you go online at \u201cHey, I want to get straight A\u2019s so I can get $100,000 when I get out of here.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s not a Christian motivation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA Christian motivation is, \u201cI want to honor God with my brain,\u201d\u2014so, a godly motivation in the classroom, a godly motivation for finding friends, a godly motivation for using recreation times.\u00a0 \u201cI want to develop the gifts He\u2019s giving me so that I can be prepared to serve Him in whatever profession He calls me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 tuned.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWelcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 When you and Barbara, a number of years ago, wrote a book for parents of teenagers, one of the key themes you addressed with those parents was the idea that your sons and daughters are walking through a mine field as they go through the teen years.\u00a0 There are traps set for them all the way through their adolescent years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen a student goes off to college, there are some big bear traps that are laid on the college campus for that student that can be life determinative for that young man or that young woman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 Their spiritual life is in play.\u00a0 Their moral life is in play.\u00a0 Some of the habits developed in college, like alcohol, can set a course for their lives.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk about all three of those issues with the author of <em>Thriving at College<\/em>, Alex Chediak.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you, sir.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Welcome to the broadcast, Alex.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks for having me, Dennis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alex is an Associate Professor of Engineering and Physics.\u00a0 Alex, why don\u2019t you just give, Bob, a sample question around physics?\u00a0 We\u2019ve really tried to stump Bob. I think we may have found the subject.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If I was taking a final in your class, what would one of the questions be, for example?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, I might have an incline plane and a block on it\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014with a rope holding it up\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and a pulley and another block.\u00a0 Then, the one block is heavier than the other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, it\u2019s kind of falling.\u00a0 The block that\u2019s heavier is falling\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Falling.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 The other one is going up the incline plane.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m getting this.\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Find the acceleration of the system.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The acceleration of this system.\u00a0 Well, it depends on the\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The answer is?\u00a0 The only term that Bob knows is fulcrum.\u00a0 Fulcrum.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Fulcrum.\u00a0 There is a fulcrum at play, isn\u2019t there?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is that the answer to the question?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not really.\u00a0 No.\u00a0 (laughter)\u00a0 That might get you half a point, though.\u00a0 I\u2019d give you something.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019ll leave that subject.\u00a0 Alex is an author, a speaker.\u00a0 He and his wife Marni have three children.\u00a0 They live in Riverside, California.\u00a0 He is a professor at California Baptist University.\u00a0 Let\u2019s talk about spiritual life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the things you write about in your book is that 24percent of all professors on the college campus profess to be\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Secular university campus.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Profess to be atheists.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or agnostics.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The national average on this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 About four percent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, a higher than average percentage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Six times greater.\u00a0 It actually gets even higher if you go to the more elite schools, like Berkley, Stanford, Yale, or MIT.\u00a0 The more elite the university, in terms of its reputation, the higher the percentage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is that the idea that the smarter you get, the more atheistic or agnostic\u2014I mean it\u2019s kind of an interesting\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 The more foolish you get, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Pretty interesting correlation there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it probably also says something about discrimination and kind of a one- track mind in higher education.\u00a0 In secular higher education, there is pressure to believe that there is no such thing as absolute truth or that any kind of religious framework that would tell you how to live or tell someone else how to live is faulty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Part of having a liberal education is the idea that you\u2019re open to all kinds of different ideas that\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 You would think.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014you haven\u2019t locked in on anything dogmatically except maybe in the sciences and in mathematics, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the things I talk about is one of the things we hear as Christians in our culture is that we\u2019re supposed to be tolerant.\u00a0 What tolerant supposedly means, according to our world, is that, \u201cWhat\u2019s true for you, is true for you and what\u2019s true for me, is true for me,\u201d (even though they are totally contradictory).\u00a0 There is no such thing as absolute truth or objective truth that would somehow have bearing on your life and mine.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou think about what the word, \u201ctolerance,\u201d has historically meant.\u00a0 What it has meant is being tolerant, gracious, or accepting of somebody who is different than you.\u00a0 Let\u2019s suppose I have a friend who is a Muslim.\u00a0 Being tolerant would be saying, \u201cOkay, I think your faith is incorrect.\u00a0 I think Jesus Christ is the way to God, but I\u2019m still going to love you, respect you, be kind towards you, be able to work on my math homework with you; but I still think you\u2019re wrong, and you, of course, think that I\u2019m wrong.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is true tolerance.\u00a0 It\u2019s holding a belief, yet, not killing other people over it.\u00a0 What our world says is tolerant is, \u201cNo, you\u2019re not even allowed to think I\u2019m wrong.\u00a0 You think I\u2019m wrong; that\u2019s just true for you.\u00a0 What\u2019s true for me is true for me.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s not tolerance at all.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You went to the University of California at Berkley.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s not exactly known as\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Go Bears!\u00a0 (laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 We\u2019ll allow for that advertisement.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ll allow for that advertisement.\u00a0 We lose in football to the South all the time.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know why.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There is a reason.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is there?\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 None of them take physics.\u00a0 (laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 In the South, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were a Christian.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How did you survive that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think it\u2019s just about going there and having the standpoint of, \u201cI am here to grow in my profession, but also to grow in my faith.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to identify myself with God\u2019s people.\u201d\u00a0 I think finding a good church, identifying yourself as a Christian from day one.\u00a0 Say, \u201cI\u2019m here.\u00a0 I\u2019m a Christian.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to find a church to plug into.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to find other Christians on campus that I can connect with, commiserate with, go through life together with, and just share our common experience with.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Would you say your spiritual foundation was really solid and locked in before you got to Berkley? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I think it was.\u00a0 I was a graduate student, as well.\u00a0 So, I was a little bit older.\u00a0 It\u2019s not exactly a one-for- one correspondence.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to an undergraduate school, also a secular school, called Alfred University.\u00a0 There, I was\u2014it was a non-Christian school.\u00a0 I was less grounded in my faith at that time.\u00a0 I was grounded enough to know, \u201cYou know what, I better find a church pretty quickly; and I better find other Christians on campus pretty quickly.\u201d\u00a0 If you don\u2019t do those two things within the first couple of months, the data is not very promising.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I have to tell you when I\u2019ve been on college visits with my sons and my daughters over the years\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014we walk through the dorms.\u00a0 One of the things I\u2019m looking for on the dorm bulletin boards as we get the tour of the dorms are the posters about Bible study going on here\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014or about campus ministry meeting here or what\u2019s going on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If I don\u2019t see that stuff\u2014and I remember being at one very prestigious university and walking through the dorms and seeing nothing that indicated anything spiritual.\u00a0 I asked our tour guide.\u00a0 I said, \u201cAre there any campus ministries on this campus?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She said, \u201cI think there\u2019s one InterVarsity something.\u201d\u00a0 So, I checked online.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I called the head of InterVarsity.\u00a0 I said, \u201cTell me about what\u2019s going on.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWell, there are four of us who meet right now.\u00a0 We\u2019re trying to figure out how to get it bigger.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that doesn\u2019t sound promising.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I thought\u2014I\u2019m thinking, \u201cThis is a great college.\u00a0 This would be a great place to get a degree from, but I don\u2019t know how my son or daughter would survive spiritually in that kind of environment.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 You don\u2019t want to send your son or daughter off to a place where they\u2019re going to lose their faith--\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014while they gain professional excellence.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a niece who is going to Texas A&amp;M.\u00a0 I went to her graduation and had a chance to kind of put my arm around her at one point.\u00a0 I said, \u201cNow, when you get there as a freshman in a few months, I want you to look up this group called Breakaway.\u00a0 Breakaway meets at your basketball arena.\u00a0 It\u2019s a Bible study.\u00a0 It\u2019s a pretty good sized little Bible study.\u00a0 It has five, six, seven, ten thousand kids going to it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s a lot of people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Her eyes got really big.\u00a0 Another young man who was there said, \u201cWhat did you call that?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI\u2019d like to know about that.\u201d\u00a0 I just want to underscore what you said here, Alex.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think one of the things that saved me as a young person going to a larger university after I had been to a junior college was when I arrived on campus (This was back in the days when 8,000 to 10,00 students was a big\u2014that was a big college campus back then).\u00a0 I arrived and immediately found a church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I also got involved in Campus Crusade for Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Those two in tandem\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 There you go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014were a great combo in terms of finding people to identify with\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and to be able to withstand some of the attacks on my faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely right.\u00a0 I think even before you choose a college, having a game plan and saying, \u201cI\u2019m going to go to this school.\u00a0 When I get there, I\u2019m going to consider these churches and these Christian organizations.\u201d\u00a0 Now, with the internet, there is no reason why that can\u2019t be done in advance.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSome of what Bob was talking about when you\u2019re looking at a college, you can even know then.\u00a0 \u201cHey, this school has these opportunities to grow in my faith.\u201d\u00a0 If the school has nothing, then, you are right.\u00a0 Why get a world-class education and let your spiritual life shrivel up over four years?\u00a0 That\u2019s not worth it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, if you\u2019re a freshman and you haven\u2019t really had a chance to meet a whole lot of people\u2014because in classes you\u2019re not going to meet friends\u2014you\u2019re not going to build relationships typically because it is more of a lecture style.\u00a0 Somebody comes to you and says, \u201cHey, there\u2019s a big group of us going over to 15<sup>th<\/sup> Street\u2014\u201d\u00a0 Where I went to college, the place was called the Taproom. \u201c\u2014a big group of us going over to the Taproom tonight\u2014\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is that tap dancing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, it was not tap dancing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Something on the tap.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Something else on tap over there.\u00a0 They said, \u201cDo you want to come along?\u201d\u00a0 You think, \u201cWell, I would like to get to meet some people.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019d like to get to know some guys.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 You need to have an option.\u00a0 You need to have another option.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is one of those areas where some kids are just waiting for the chance to.\u00a0 \u201cDo they card you over there?\u00a0 No, they don\u2019t card you over there.\u00a0 Well, let\u2019s go.\u201d\u00a0 You know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How do you prepare a son or a daughter for what they\u2019re going to experience in terms of pressure to drink when they get to college?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just honestly talking about it.\u00a0 I mean, one of the things I think teens hunger for from their parents is honest dialogue about the faith\u2014to have their parents share with them, \u201cLook these are the struggles of young adult life,\u201d and to be very real and frank with them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA lot of teens, I find, are more eager to talk to those kinds of things: sexuality, alcohol, drugs.\u00a0 They\u2019re more eager to talk to Mom and Dad than sometimes the mom and dad are.\u00a0 They are more hungry for their parents\u2019 involvement in those areas of their life than sometimes the parents are uncomfortable or feeling bashful about bringing up sensitive topics.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I think just honest dialogue about, \u201cHey, these are the things that happen at college.\u201d\u00a0 Perhaps, if a parent struggled in that area and they sinned in those ways in college, just be honest.\u00a0 Say, \u201cI blew it in this way and this way in college.\u00a0 This is how God led me out of that.\u00a0 This is what I paid for that.\u00a0 These are the consequences that I reaped.\u00a0 This will not go well for you if you go that way.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor me, one of the things that I did that I thought was really helpful when I went to Alfred was I had some Christian friends that I already knew were there.\u00a0 It was a small school, only about 2,500, so the number of Christians wasn\u2019t going to be in the thousands, like what you were talking about, Dennis, earlier.\u00a0 It was 40 or 50.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I knew five or ten of them before I went.\u00a0 At least, I had, \u201cOkay, these are people I can kind of get together with, hang out with, develop friendships through them and not feel like I have to be a part of the party scene.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think what you\u2019re talking about earlier, Bob, is sometimes a freshman feels, \u201cHey, if I\u2019m ever going to get to know anybody, I better go to the pub.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s the only place that\u2019s going\u2014that\u2019s the only social outlet I possibly have.\u201d\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s not the only opportunity.\u00a0 You just have to become aware of what the other outlets are.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think we got to be careful as we talk to our students that we don\u2019t simply say, \u201cLook, here\u2019s what can happen if you do go out drinking.\u00a0 Here are some consequences you can experience.\u201d\u00a0 I think we have to point them back to their relationship with Christ\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014presuming they have one\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014and talk about living a life that honors Christ so that their motivation is not purely to avoid consequences\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014but their motivation really is to live in a way that\u2019s Christ-honoring.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 One of the things I talk about in <em>Thriving at College<\/em> quite a bit is that everything that we do in college should be the fruit of our walk with Christ.\u00a0 Our academics shouldn\u2019t be, \u201cHey, I want to get straight A\u2019s so that I get $100,000 when I get out of here.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s not a Christian motivation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA Christian motivation is, \u201cI want to honor God with my brain.\u00a0 I want to develop the intellectual gifts He\u2019s given me so that I can be prepared to serve Him in whatever profession He calls me,\u201d\u2014so, a godly motivation in the classroom, a godly motivation for finding friends, a godly motivation for using recreation times\u2014that would be an example.\u00a0 There is, \u201cHow does getting drunk on a Friday night help me grow in my walk with the Lord?\u201d\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t.\u00a0 That\u2019s the reason.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the things Barbara and I wrote about in our book, <em>Parenting Today\u2019s Adolescent<\/em>, was the principle of Daniel\u2014how he made up his mind in advance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Not to defile.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that he was going\u2014he knew what his convictions were before he faced the issue.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think there\u2019s the issue of drinking.\u00a0 There\u2019s also the issue of sex.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We all know what\u2019s taking place on the college campus today.\u00a0 There are no hours.\u00a0 Guys and gals can hang out in one another\u2019s rooms\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sometimes, they have the same bathrooms at some secular universities.\u00a0 They have a co-ed bathroom system sometimes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 So, you have to prepare your sons and daughters to know how to move from the controlled environment of home where there are expectations and standards to, \u201cAnything goes.\u201d\u00a0 In fact, most things are promoted at the college campus.\u00a0 What\u2019s the best advice a parent can give their child concerning these matters?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Four key principles, I think.\u00a0 Number One: \u201cOur God-given desire for intimacy, for physical and emotional intimacy\u2014it\u2019s God-given.\u201d\u00a0 In other words, a 17-year-old young man shouldn\u2019t be ashamed of his sex drive.\u00a0 That should not be a shameful thing.\u00a0 It is God-given in order to drive him ultimately to a lifelong partner in marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, \u201cWe get into trouble when we seek the benefits of marriage, sexual intercourse, apart from the associated costs of permanent commitment.\u201d\u00a0 God intended them to go together.\u00a0 So, in a marriage, that\u2019s the only place God made us to be intimate.\u00a0 That\u2019s where we\u2019re going to be able to safely enjoy it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThird thing is, \u201cThe purpose of one-on-one dating, of getting to know a great guy or great gal, is to see if the two should eventually marry.\u201d\u00a0 Take away that overarching long-term goal and purpose from the relationship\u2014basically, you run into problems because in some way one of them is using the other or you\u2019re basically mutually using one another\u2014looking for companionship, apart from any purpose to it.\u00a0 The purpose is preparing for marriage and seeing whether the two should marry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe fourth principle is, \u201cThe best way to really prepare for that relationship with a godly guy or girl is to become a very godly man or woman yourself.\u201d\u00a0 That way, you can best be able to attract somebody who has your same values.\u00a0 The main thing we\u2019re seeing, I think, is the problem on university campuses is this idea that we can separate emotionally intimacy from physical intimacy from commitment.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 All three.\u00a0 On the one hand, you see the hook-up scene and the dangers of the hook-up scene, which is really an idea that, \u201cI can have a physical relationship with somebody for whom I have no emotional connection so there\u2019s no emotional heartbreak.\u00a0 All it is\u2014is a physical act.\u00a0 I\u2019m like a dog going in and coming out, and that\u2019s it.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s all false sex is, is like two dogs.\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s not how God made us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe way that God made us to be physical, emotional, spiritual beings all together, which is why the hook-up scene is filled with heartache, heartbreak, misunderstanding, confusion, depression, anxiety.\u00a0 So, that doesn\u2019t work.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn a marriage, you see a husband and a wife enjoying both physical and emotional intimacy.\u00a0 One promotes the other.\u00a0 The relationship gets better and better sexually and emotionally as they know each other more, have more shared experiences.\u00a0 Their hearts are bound together in the commitment of marriage and over the time of the marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I think young people have to have a high view of marriage, first of all.\u00a0 God has ordained marriage to satisfy my longing for that level of intimacy.\u00a0 Then, to associate the dating activity with that as the purpose to find out whether this would be, \u201cGod would have us marry.\u00a0 I want to become the kind of person that\u2019s going to be a godly husband or a godly wife.\u00a0 I want to meet somebody who is high quality, and I want to move toward that relationship in a way that honors God by recognizing that God made the physical and emotional intimacy goes together.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As parents, we have the assignment of preparing our sons and daughters to make these choices in advance of facing the issue, whether its sex outside of marriage, drinking, their own Christian faith and how they\u2019re going to feed their faith long-haul.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAlex, I really appreciate the work you\u2019ve done on your book, <em>Thriving at College.<\/em>\u00a0 It really is a great companion to a new resource we\u2019ve created here at FamilyLife called<em> College Ready\u00ae<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s a DVD series to prepare graduating high school seniors or incoming college freshmen to go to college on purpose and have a game plan in advance so that the next four or five years are not just lived out without intentionality; but they\u2019re purposeful about friendships, about dating, about their own Christian growth.\u00a0 That\u2019s what you\u2019re encouraging parents to do in this book, <em>Thriving at College<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just appreciate you and your heart for students.\u00a0 done.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now is the time.\u00a0 Now, your son or daughter is thinking, \u201cThis is happening.\u201d\u00a0 I remember at my own high school.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t think college was happening until the week before.\u00a0 That\u2019s when you start packing up the car.\u00a0 All of a sudden, now, \u201cIt\u2019s real.\u201d\u00a0 Now, they\u2019re more teachable than they ever were.\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s happening.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here is the thing\u2014I would rather a son or daughter go through this material prior to facing the issue rather than playing defense\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Alex:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014in another six weeks, eight weeks, three months.\u00a0 I\u2019m telling you, they can move from an offensive position to defensive very quickly at college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, if you go online at
