Dennis Rainey says a lot of guys today are confused about just what it means to <em>be<\/em> a man.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>They\u2019re looking for someone to talk to; they\u2019re looking for some guidance in sorting out all the confusing messages that are coming their way.\u00a0 They want to know what it means to be a man.\u00a0 \u201cWhat does a man do?\u00a0 How does he think?\u00a0 How does he act?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey want to know the essence of what manhood is all about, and they want to know it from an authoritative source.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday, June 9th.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to look today to an authoritative source \u2013 we\u2019re going to look at what the Scriptures have to say about what it means to be a man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us on the Thursday edition.\u00a0 You know, I think if you look at enough advertising in magazines or on television, you really get the sense that advertisers are recognizing that guys, there\u2019s something in us that wants to be what men are supposed to be.\u00a0 And what they\u2019re trying to say in the advertising is, \u201cIf you buy this product, you\u2019ll be that guy.\u00a0 Buy this shaving cream, or this after-shave lotion, or this deodorant, and you\u2019ll <em>be<\/em> the kind of man you really want to be.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think guys watch those kinds of commercials and think, \u201cI\u2019m going to go buy that razor, because then I\u2019m going to be a <em>real man<\/em>!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, think about what they\u2019re appealing to.\u00a0 There is something within the chest of a man that longs to be a courageous, aspiring, noble warrior.\u00a0 And you don\u2019t have to enlist in the army to be one of those men, because there is a spiritual battle taking place today around every life listening to this broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s probably not a person listening, Bob, who doesn\u2019t need some kind of man around their life right now to help them handle the spiritual battle that\u2019s taking place in their life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we are in an army of sorts, aren\u2019t we \u2013 we\u2019re in a spiritual army, a spiritual battle.\u00a0 We do need other men to urge us on, and this week we\u2019re talking about what we can do as men to move up, to step up, to the next place God has for us in our journey toward manhood.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\u00a0 I\u2019ve just finished a book called <em>Stepping Up.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>In it, I talk about how stepping up is not just reserved for Michael Jordan at a sporting event.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I used to watch Michael Jordan play basketball, and I have to say I really do miss him, because when he got that \u201ceye of the tiger\u201d in his eye and he started looking at the basket and at the goal there wasn\u2019t anybody on the earth that could stop him.\u00a0 Well, you know what the announcer would say?\u00a0 He would say, \u201cHe stepped up his game.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the same is true for men today.\u00a0 Men need to \u201cstep up\u201d to manhood and in the process become all that God intends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I\u2019ve outlined are five simple, yet profound steps that I think men can take to help them become the man God created them to be.\u00a0 There\u2019s the step of boyhood:\u00a0 a boy was intended to step up and transition through adolescence (that\u2019s the second step).\u00a0 The third step is manhood: and a man isn\u2019t to straddle the manhood step and have one foot on it and one foot in adolescence.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Which is where a lot of guys are today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m telling you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are two last steps, though, that I think add great direction and vision to a man\u2019s life.\u00a0 That\u2019s the step of moving up from manhood to mentor, and then finally from being a mentor to a patriarch.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think one of the things that you\u2019ve given us in this new book is a vision beyond manhood.\u00a0 Frankly, most of us have thought that if you get to manhood, you\u2019ve arrived.\u00a0 You\u2019ve said, \u201cNo, that\u2019s not the stopping point.\u00a0 There\u2019s still vision for your life even once you\u2019re firmly established as a man.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, there\u2019s a poem that I ran across, Bob, that speaks of an established man like you\u2019re talking about there.\u00a0 It was written by Josiah Gilbert Holland, and I have no idea when he lived or how he lived, but his poem called something out in me as I read it.\u00a0 I just want to share it with our listeners.\u00a0 It\u2019s entitled \u201cGive Us Men.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGive us Men!<br>Strong and stalwart ones;<br>Men whom highest hope inspires,<br>Men whom purest honor fires,<br>Men who trample self beneath them,<br>Men who make their country wreath them<br>As her noble sons,<br>Worthy of their sires;<br>Men who never shame their mothers,<br>Men who never fail their brothers,<br>True, however false are others:<br>Give us Men - I say again,<br>Give us Men!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGive us Men!<br>Men who, when tempest gathers,<br>Grasp the standard of their fathers<br>In the thickest fight;<br>Men who strike for home and altar,<br>Let the coward cringe and falter,<br>God defend the right!<br>True as truth the lorn and lonely,<br>Tender, as the brave are only,<br>Men who tread where saints have trod,<br>Men for Country, Home, and God:<br>Give us Men! I say again\u00a0 -<br>Give us Men!\u2019\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t-Josiah Gilbert Holland \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ll tell you, there\u2019s never been a time in our nation\u2019s history, I don\u2019t think, as there is today when we\u2019ve needed men to be that kind of man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you read that poem, I was thinking back to the men who were onboard the <em>Titanic<\/em> the night it sank \u2013 the men who sent women and children first.\u00a0 Of course, there were a few men who tried to disguise themselves and then hide out in the lifeboats so that they could be preserved.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember watching the old movie, <em>A Night to Remember, <\/em>that tells the story of the <em>Titanic<\/em>, and there\u2019s this great scene where they uncover a stowaway, a man, there among the women and children, trying to save his life.\u00a0 And you look at it and say, \u201cThat\u2019s not what a man does.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t climb in the lifeboat and try to preserve himself.\u00a0 He gives up his life for others.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, you\u2019re going to see a little bit later on how you\u2019re really hitting at the core of what is a real man.\u00a0 I\u2019ll give you a hint:\u00a0 it is <em>all about <\/em>courage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Why is it, you think, today, that we have a manhood deficit?\u00a0 Why is it that men haven\u2019t stepped up to manhood?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, Bob, I\u2019ve interacted literally with thousands of men at Promise Keepers events, at other events I\u2019ve spoken at, and here at FamilyLife you and I have interviewed authorities on this subject. . . I really see men looking for three things today.\u00a0 I think they are desperate to find them!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst of all, they want to know what it means to be a man.\u00a0 What it\u2019s all about.\u00a0 And they want to know it from an authoritative source.\u00a0 They\u2019re looking for some guidance in sorting out all the confusing messages that are coming their way about the definition of manhood.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if you think about it, where are we getting those illustrations?\u00a0 Those examples of what a real man is, and what a real man does?\u00a0 Well, the most prominent, I think, is media:\u00a0 movies, television, and the internet.\u00a0 We have all kinds of images being portrayed night after night on TV, and it\u2019s usually adultery, drinking, or some kind of addiction of some kind that they\u2019re associated with.\u00a0 It is not men who are noble, men who are protecting their community, their families, and their nation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we have an image coming at us that says being a man is all about meeting my own needs.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about me.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about self.\u00a0 The intellectual elite is another source of messages that are coming at us in the culture and what\u2019s happening at our universities today is that we\u2019re training young men and young women with definitions of what it means to be a man by professors whose worldview ignores God, the Scriptures, or that God designed them male and female in the first place.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo what we have coming out of the university is that there are five sexes \u2013 not two, but five \u2013 or another message they promote is that there is a unisex.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, just one sex.\u00a0 We\u2019re all really the same other than a few biological quirks.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, and so here you have these messages \u2013 not coming from all universities, or all professors, certainly, but enough to brainwash a generation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I was getting my haircut over the weekend. You talk about brainwashing a generation \u2013 I was sitting in the barber shop waiting for them to call out my name, and I picked up a men\u2019s magazine.\u00a0 I think this one was <em>Men\u2019s Health.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>If I was trying to get a definition for what a man is today from <em>Men\u2019s Health<\/em> magazine, here\u2019s the definition I\u2019d get:\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s all about how your body looks.\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019d be in real trouble!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Both of us, both of us would be in trouble.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because I don\u2019t have a six-pack of abs; I\u2019ve got a keg.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s how that works for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou pick up this magazine that says, \u201cThis is what a man is.\u201d\u00a0 And it has no resemblance to any kind of biblical definition for manhood.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> If you think about it, Bob, what\u2019s missing today is that those of us who know the Bible and who can represent it well are not stepping forward with a good, clear definition of manhood to combat the culture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, Paul contrasts your health magazine illustration of what it means to be a man in 1 Corinthians, Chapter 16, verses 13 and 14, with this:\u00a0 He says, \u201cBe on the alert.\u00a0 Stand firm in the faith.\u00a0 Act like men.\u00a0 Be strong.\u00a0 Let all that you do be done in love.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow that\u2019s different.\u00a0 That\u2019s a contrast to what the health magazine would promote.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, in fact, if a guy\u2019s looking for a definition for manhood, 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 is a pretty good definition, isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s not bad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You can commit that one to memory and you\u2019ve got some marching orders.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ll tell you, every man would be wise to be on the alert, to stand firm in the faith, to be acting like a man, and be strong, and letting everything that we do be done in love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There\u2019s a second thing that men are looking for today, and that\u2019s a vision for being a man.\u00a0 I think there is a real loss today, Bob, of a clear, compelling vision for manhood that calls men to nobility, to sacrifice, to death to self, and to love other people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, you go back to Joshua, Chapter 1, and God, through the prophet Joshua, exhorted the men of that day to fear not, but be courageous.\u00a0 Three times.\u00a0 To know their God, not be afraid, and to be courageous.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, \u201chave I not commanded you; be very strong and courageous.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\u00a0 And you can just sense the men bowing up and stepping up as a result of that command.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think all of us wonder, \u201cWhere do we get that kind of courage?\u00a0 Where does it get borne into the heart of a boy?\u00a0 Where does a man in his 20\u2019s who recognizes his own fears go to get that kind of courage?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I believe a boy can have a chest implant.\u00a0 A chest implant from his God, from his mom, from his dad, and from other significant godly men in his life.\u00a0 One of the great needs, Bob, is for those who are raising sons today, whether it\u2019s a two parent family of a mom and a dad together, or a single-parent mom raising a son, is to employ the help of friends.\u00a0 Male friends to intersect with their sons\u2019 lives and to encourage them to have a chest, to be heroic, and to step up when the situation calls for such.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, you were in a meeting with my son Samuel when he was a teenager.\u00a0 I invited you, along with Bill Bright, and Jeff Shulte, and another friend of mine, Merle Engle, to come together for a breakfast to speak some words of truth and encouragement into my son\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd this is what you did right here.\u00a0 You gave him a sense of vision; a compelling vision for going away to college and for stepping up and becoming a man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 As you\u2019ve said, that\u2019s what a man needs.\u00a0 He needs a definition, a vision, and someone to call him to courage.\u00a0 I\u2019ve watched you do this with men, calling them to pray with their wives regularly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Calling men to. . . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> To interview their daugthers\u2019 dates.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what I was thinking of.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThose little acts that demand courage from all of us. .\u00a0 . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But they demand a man who steps up fully on the manhood step and says, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I\u2019m going to be the man.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSpeaking of being the man, I have a piece that I wrote to my grafted in son, otherwise known as my son-in-law \u2013 but I like to refer to him as my grafted in son, just my son \u2013 but Michael Escue is now a doctor.\u00a0 I was so proud of him, obviously, after he\u2019d married Ashley and they had gone through med school and had a child or two at the time.\u00a0 I wanted to get him something upon graduation from med school that could be more than just a few kind words.\u00a0 So I wrote a piece to him that I want to share a portion of with our listeners.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, I kind of went out of my way to do this, because I went online and found a sword.\u00a0 A bona fide, almost four foot-long sword.\u00a0 I paid a hundred bucks for this sword.\u00a0 It\u2019s the real deal; it\u2019s a King Arthur sword.\u00a0 I had the sword there, and I had this piece that I had written to Michael framed.\u00a0 I read it to him right before I gave him the sword.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was really a fascinating time as he graduated from med school to be able to read this to him, and to exhort him or - as we\u2019ve been talking about - encourage him to be the man.\u00a0 It\u2019s entitled \u201cBe the Man, Michael \u2013 God\u2019s Man.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGod made you to be the man \u2013 His man.\u00a0 Michael, I appreciate you.\u00a0 You are an answer to our prayers for a godly husband for Ashley.\u00a0 Four years ago, you asked me for my princess\u2019s hand in marriage.\u00a0 You know the rest of the story.\u00a0 You got the princess\u2019s hand, and her family, all of her family.\u00a0 A lesser man might have fainted under the load of all those relationships.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou and I have charted some new territory together.\u00a0 I\u2019ve never grafted a new son into our family, but you have made the process painless.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been amazed at your servant spirit and your teachability.\u00a0 You have eagerly helped me install a garbage disposal, and you\u2019ve been a gracious man to listen to me when I called our family to stick together.\u00a0 It takes a man to listen to another man.\u00a0 Be God\u2019s man.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so on this special occasion of your graduation from med school, I want to honor you with a charge and with a blessing.\u00a0 When success comes your way, as it most assuredly will, don\u2019t let its trappings cling to you.\u00a0 I\u2019ll pass along some godly advice that Bill Bright gave me when I was about your age:\u00a0 \u2018Wear the cloak of materialism loosely.\u00a0 There is no amount of money that God won\u2019t give to the man who doesn\u2019t allow any of it to stick to his fingers.\u2019\u00a0 Be a funnel, Michael, not a bucket.\u00a0 If you do, you\u2019ll be the man - God\u2019s man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen your family lets you down and your friends don\u2019t hold you up, resist cynicism.\u00a0 Never forget that cynicism is a subtle form of disbelief.\u00a0 Remember that God is always able.\u00a0 Be the man - God\u2019s man.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen it seems that chaos at home presses in, and that satisfaction and accomplishment at work pull you out, stand firm against the lure of lesser loyalties.\u00a0 Keep on loving Ashley and be a covenant-keeping, family man \u2013 God\u2019s man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen it\u2019s painful to be the man, and you want to pull back, don\u2019t.\u00a0 Don\u2019t play it safe; don\u2019t hide.\u00a0 Instead, step up.\u00a0 Step forward.\u00a0 Step into the pain.\u00a0 If you do, you\u2019ll be the man \u2013 God\u2019s man.\u00a0 When temptations come your way - and they will \u2013 guard your heart with diligence.\u00a0 A man is never more of a man than when his heart is yielded to God and protected by His Word.\u00a0 Be the man \u2013 God\u2019s man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen pride tempts, put self to death.\u00a0 Be the man \u2013 God\u2019s man.\u00a0 When children test your patience, when children test your love, when children test your resolve, pass these tests by being the man \u2013 God\u2019s man.\u00a0 When the Rainey family is late \u2013 again \u2013 be patient with us again.\u00a0 Be the man \u2013 God\u2019s man.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs\u00a0 I close, there are eight things that God requires:\u00a0 to love your God supremely, to guard your heart securely, to serve your fellow man patiently, to speak truth steadfastly, to protect your family securely, to live uprightly and resolutely, to seek His kingdom and His righteousness, and to do battle for your generation\u2019s souls courageously.\u00a0 No, Michael, you won\u2019t ever be my son-in-law.\u00a0 You have become a valued and respected son.\u00a0 And so, as one who has watched you love, lead, and serve my daughter Ashley and your young family over these past four years, I bless you as a man.\u00a0 I bless you as a man who is indeed God\u2019s man.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then I closed with Psalm 112:1-2:\u00a0 \u201cPraise the Lord.\u00a0 How blessed is the man who fears the Lord; who greatly delights in His commandments.\u00a0 His descendants will be mighty on earth.\u00a0 The generation of the upright will be blessed.\u201d\u00a0 (Then added) \u201cMichael, I love you, and I\u2019m proud to be your dad.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI read Michael that piece, and then placed that sword in his hands.\u00a0 You know it\u2019s really interesting, Bob, although Michael isn\u2019t my flesh and blood son, I had a real sense in which, as a younger man, that moment with him of being charged by me and blessed by me after a significant accomplishment in his life, was a really important moment for him as a man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s a moment that needs to be replicated in the lives of a lot of young men today as we help them grow into all that God created them to be as men.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know that a lot of men have the real understanding of how powerful their words are \u2013 their words to encourage, to exhort, to bless; someone to talk to; they\u2019re looking for some guidance in sorting out all the confusing messages that are coming their way.\u00a0 They want to know what it means to be a man.\u00a0 \u201cWhat does a man do?\u00a0 How does he think?\u00a0 How does he act?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey want to know the essence of what manhood is all about, and they want to know it from an authoritative source.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Thursday, June 9th.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to look today to an authoritative source \u2013 we\u2019re going to look at what the Scriptures have to say about what it means to be a man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us on the Thursday edition.\u00a0 You know, I think if you look at enough advertising in magazines or on television, you really get the sense that advertisers are recognizing that guys, there\u2019s something in us that wants to be what men are supposed to be.\u00a0 And what they\u2019re trying to say in the advertising is, \u201cIf you buy this product, you\u2019ll be that guy.\u00a0 Buy this shaving cream, or this after-shave lotion, or this deodorant, and you\u2019ll <em>be<\/em> the kind of man you really want to be.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think guys watch those kinds of commercials and think, \u201cI\u2019m going to go buy that razor, because then I\u2019m going to be a <em>real man<\/em>!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well, think about what they\u2019re appealing to.\u00a0 There is something within the chest of a man that longs to be a courageous, aspiring, noble warrior.\u00a0 And you don\u2019t have to enlist in the army to be one of those men, because there is a spiritual battle taking place today around every life listening to this broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s probably not a person listening, Bob, who doesn\u2019t need some kind of man around their life right now to help them handle the spiritual battle that\u2019s taking place in their life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we are in an army of sorts, aren\u2019t we \u2013 we\u2019re in a spiritual army, a spiritual battle.\u00a0 We do need other men to urge us on, and this week we\u2019re talking about what we can do as men to move up, to step up, to the next place God has for us in our journey toward manhood.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\u00a0 I\u2019ve just finished a book called <em>Stepping Up.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>In it, I talk about how stepping up is not just reserved for Michael Jordan at a sporting event.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, I used to watch Michael Jordan play basketball, and I have to say I really do miss him, because when he got that \u201ceye of the tiger\u201d in his eye and he started looking at the basket and at the goal there wasn\u2019t anybody on the earth that could stop him.\u00a0 Well, you know what the announcer would say?\u00a0 He would say, \u201cHe stepped up his game.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the same is true for men today.\u00a0 Men need to \u201cstep up\u201d to manhood and in the process become all that God intends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I\u2019ve outlined are five simple, yet profound steps that I think men can take to help them become the man God created them to be.\u00a0 There\u2019s the step of boyhood:\u00a0 a boy was intended to step up and transition through adolescence (that\u2019s the second step).\u00a0 The third step is manhood: and a man isn\u2019t to straddle the manhood step and have one foot on it and one foot in adolescence.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Which is where a lot of guys are today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019m telling you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are two last steps, though, that I think add great direction and vision to a man\u2019s life.\u00a0 That\u2019s the step of moving up from manhood to mentor, and then finally from being a mentor to a patriarch.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think one of the things that you\u2019ve given us in this new book is a vision beyond manhood.\u00a0 Frankly, most of us have thought that if you get to manhood, you\u2019ve arrived.\u00a0 You\u2019ve said, \u201cNo, that\u2019s not the stopping point.\u00a0 There\u2019s still vision for your life even once you\u2019re firmly established as a man.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> You know, there\u2019s a poem that I ran across, Bob, that speaks of an established man like you\u2019re talking about there.\u00a0 It was written by Josiah Gilbert Holland, and I have no idea when he lived or how he lived, but his poem called something out in me as I read it.\u00a0 I just want to share it with our listeners.\u00a0 It\u2019s entitled \u201cGive Us Men.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGive us Men!<br>Strong and stalwart ones;<br>Men whom highest hope inspires,<br>Men whom purest honor fires,<br>Men who trample self beneath them,<br>Men who make their country wreath them<br>As her noble sons,<br>Worthy of their sires;<br>Men who never shame their mothers,<br>Men who never fail their brothers,<br>True, however false are others:<br>Give us Men - I say again,<br>Give us Men!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGive us Men!<br>Men who, when tempest gathers,<br>Grasp the standard of their fathers<br>In the thickest fight;<br>Men who strike for home and altar,<br>Let the coward cringe and falter,<br>God defend the right!<br>True as truth the lorn and lonely,<br>Tender, as the I really see men looking for three things today.\u00a0 I think they are desperate to find them!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFirst of all, they want to know what it means to be a man.\u00a0 What it\u2019s all about.\u00a0 And they want to know it from an authoritative source.\u00a0 They\u2019re looking for some guidance in sorting out all the confusing messages that are coming their way about the definition of manhood.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, if you think about it, where are we getting those illustrations?\u00a0 Those examples of what a real man is, and what a real man does?\u00a0 Well, the most prominent, I think, is media:\u00a0 movies, television, and the internet.\u00a0 We have all kinds of images being portrayed night after night on TV, and it\u2019s usually adultery, drinking, or some kind of addiction of some kind that they\u2019re associated with.\u00a0 It is not men who are noble, men who are protecting their community, their families, and their nation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we have an image coming at us that says being a man is all about meeting my own needs.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about me.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about self.\u00a0 The intellectual elite is another source of messages that are coming at us in the culture and what\u2019s happening at our universities today is that we\u2019re training young men and young women with definitions of what it means to be a man by professors whose worldview ignores God, the Scriptures, or that God designed them male and female in the first place.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo what we have coming out of the university is that there are five sexes \u2013 not two, but five \u2013 or another message they promote is that there is a unisex.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, just one sex.\u00a0 We\u2019re all really the same other than a few biological quirks.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes, and so here you have these messages \u2013 not coming from all universities, or all professors, certainly, but enough to brainwash a generation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I was getting my haircut over the weekend. You talk about brainwashing a generation \u2013 I was sitting in the barber shop waiting for them to call out my name, and I picked up a men\u2019s magazine.\u00a0 I think this one was <em>Men\u2019s Health.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>If I was trying to get a definition for what a man is today from <em>Men\u2019s Health<\/em> magazine, here\u2019s the definition I\u2019d get:\u00a0 \u201cIt\u2019s all about how your body looks.\u201d\u00a0 And I\u2019d be in real trouble!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Both of us, both of us would be in trouble.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because I don\u2019t have a six-pack of abs; I\u2019ve got a keg.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s how that works for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou pick up this magazine that says, \u201cThis is what a man is.\u201d\u00a0 And it has no resemblance to any kind of biblical definition for manhood.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> If you think about it, Bob, what\u2019s missing today is that those of us who know the Bible and who can represent it well are not stepping forward with a good, clear definition of manhood to combat the culture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, Paul contrasts your health magazine illustration of what it means to be a man in 1 Corinthians, Chapter 16, verses 13 and 14, with this:\u00a0 He says, \u201cBe on the alert.\u00a0 Stand firm in the faith.\u00a0 Act like men.\u00a0 Be strong.\u00a0 Let all that you do be done in love.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow that\u2019s different.\u00a0 That\u2019s a contrast to what the health magazine would promote.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, in fact, if a guy\u2019s looking for a definition for manhood, 1 Corinthians 16:13-14 is a pretty good definition, isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s not bad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You can commit that one to memory and you\u2019ve got some marching orders.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I\u2019ll tell you, every man would be wise to be on the alert, to stand firm in the faith, to be acting like a man, and be strong, and letting everything that we do be done in love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> There\u2019s a second thing that men are looking for today, and that\u2019s a vision for being a man.\u00a0 I think there is a real loss today, Bob, of a clear, compelling vision for manhood that calls men to nobility, to sacrifice, to death to self, and to love other people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, you go back to Joshua, Chapter 1, and God, through the prophet Joshua, exhorted the men of that day to fear not, but be courageous.\u00a0 Three times.\u00a0 To know their God, not be afraid, and to be courageous.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, \u201chave I not commanded you; be very strong and courageous.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> That\u2019s right.\u00a0 And you can just sense the men bowing up and stepping up as a result of that command.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think all of us wonder, \u201cWhere do we get that kind of courage?\u00a0 Where does it get borne into the heart of a boy?\u00a0 Where does a man in his 20\u2019s who recognizes his own fears go to get that kind of courage?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> I believe a boy can have a chest implant.\u00a0 A chest implant from his God, from his mom, from his dad, and from other significant godly men in his life.\u00a0 One of the great needs, Bob, is for those who are raising sons today, whether it\u2019s a two parent family of a mom and a dad together, or a single-parent mom raising a son, is to employ the help of friends.\u00a0 Male friends to intersect with their sons\u2019 lives and to encourage them to have a chest, to be heroic, and to step up when the situation calls for such.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, you were in a meeting with my son Samuel when he was a teenager.\u00a0 I invited you, along with Bill Bright, and Jeff Shulte, and another friend of mine, Merle Engle, to come together for a breakfast to speak some words of truth and encouragement into my son\u2019s life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd this is what you did right here.\u00a0 You gave him a sense of vision; a compelling vision for going away to college and for stepping up and becoming a man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 As you\u2019ve said, that\u2019s what a man needs.\u00a0 He needs a definition, a vision, and someone to call him to courage.\u00a0 I\u2019ve watched you do this with men, calling them to pray with their wives regularly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Calling men to. . . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> To interview their daugthers\u2019 dates.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what I was thinking of.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThose little acts that demand courage from all of us. .\u00a0 . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> But they demand a man who steps up fully on the manhood step and says, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I\u2019m going to be the man.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSpeaking of being the man, I have a piece that I wrote to my grafted in son, otherwise known as my son-in-law \u2013 but I like to refer to him as my grafted in son, just my son \u2013 but Michael Escue is now a doctor.\u00a0 I was so proud of him, obviously, after he\u2019d married Ashley and they had gone through med school and had a child or two at the time.\u00a0 I wanted to get him something upon graduation from med school that could be more than just a few kind words.\u00a0 So I wrote a piece to him that I want to share a portion of with our listeners.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, I kind of went out of my way to do this, because I went online and found a sword.\u00a0 A bona fide, almost four foot-long sword.\u00a0 I paid a hundred bucks for this sword.\u00a0 It\u2019s the real deal; it\u2019s a King Arthur sword.\u00a0 I had the sword there, and I had this piece that I had written to Michael framed.\u00a0 I read it to him right before I gave him the sword.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was really a fascinating time as he graduated from med school to be able to read this to him, and to exhort him or - as we\u2019ve been talking about - encourage him to be the man.\u00a0 It\u2019s entitled \u201cBe the Man, Michael \u2013 God\u2019s Man.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cGod made you to be the man \u2013 His man.\u00a0 Michael, I appreciate you.\u00a0 You are an answer to our prayers for a godly husband for Ashley.\u00a0 Four years ago, you asked me for my princess\u2019s hand in marriage.\u00a0 You know the rest of the story.\u00a0 You got the princess\u2019s hand, and her family, all of her family.\u00a0 A lesser man might have fainted under the load of all those relationships.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou and I have charted some new territory together.\u00a0 I\u2019ve never grafted a new son into our family, but you have made the process painless.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been amazed at your servant spirit and your teachability.\u00a0 You have eagerly helped me install a garbage disposal, and you\u2019ve been a gracious man to listen to me when I called our family to stick together.\u00a0 It takes a man to listen to another man.\u00a0 Be God\u2019s man.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so on this special occasion of your graduation from med school, I want to honor you with a charge and with a blessing.\u00a0 When success comes your way, as it most assuredly will, don\u2019t let its trappings cling to you.\u00a0 I\u2019ll pass along some godly advice that Bill Bright gave me when I was about your age:\u00a0 \u2018Wear the cloak of materialism loosely.\u00a0 There is no amount of money that God won\u2019t give to the man who doesn\u2019t allow any of it to stick to his fingers.\u2019\u00a0 Be a funnel, Michael, not a bucket.\u00a0 If you do, you\u2019ll be the man - God\u2019s man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen your family lets you down and your friends don\u2019t hold you up, resist cynicism.\u00a0 Never forget that cynicism is a subtle form of disbelief.\u00a0 Remember that God is always able.\u00a0 Be the man - God\u2019s man.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen it seems that chaos at home presses in, and that satisfaction and accomplishment at work pull you out, stand firm against the lure of lesser loyalties.\u00a0 Keep on loving Ashley and be a covenant-keeping, family man \u2013 God\u2019s man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen it\u2019s painful to be the man, and you want to pull back, don\u2019t.\u00a0 Don\u2019t play it safe; don\u2019t hide.\u00a0 Instead, step up.\u00a0 Step forward.\u00a0 Step into the pain.\u00a0 If you do, you\u2019ll be the man \u2013 God\u2019s man.\u00a0 When temptations come your way - and they will \u2013 guard your heart with diligence.\u00a0 A man is never more of a man than when his heart is yielded to God and protected by His Word.\u00a0 Be the man \u2013 God\u2019s man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen pride tempts, put self to death.\u00a0 Be the man \u2013 God\u2019s man.\u00a0 When children test your patience, when children test your love, when children test your resolve, pass these tests by being the man \u2013 God\u2019s man.\u00a0 When the Rainey family is late \u2013 again \u2013 be patient with us again.\u00a0 Be the man \u2013 God\u2019s man.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs\u00a0 I close, there are eight things that God requires:\u00a0 to love your God supremely, to guard your heart securely, to serve your fellow man patiently, to speak truth steadfastly, to protect your family securely, to live uprightly and resolutely, to seek His kingdom and His righteousness, and to do battle for your generation\u2019s souls courageously.\u00a0 No, Michael, you won\u2019t ever be my son-in-law.\u00a0 You have become a valued and respected son.\u00a0 And so, as one who has watched you love, lead, and serve my daughter Ashley and your young family over these past four years, I bless you as a man.\u00a0 I bless you as a man who is indeed God\u2019s man.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then I closed with Psalm 112:1-2:\u00a0 \u201cPraise the Lord.\u00a0 How blessed is the man who fears the Lord; who greatly delights in His commandments.\u00a0 His descendants will be mighty on earth.\u00a0 The generation of the upright will be blessed.\u201d\u00a0 (Then added) \u201cMichael, I love you, and I\u2019m proud to be your dad.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI read Michael that piece, and then placed that sword in his hands.\u00a0 You know it\u2019s really interesting, Bob, although Michael isn\u2019t my flesh and blood son, I had a real sense in which, as a younger man, that moment with him of being charged by me and blessed by me after a significant accomplishment in his life, was a really important moment for him as a man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think it\u2019s a moment that needs to be replicated in the lives of a lot of young men today as we help them grow into all that God created them to be as men.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know that a lot of men have the real understanding of how powerful their words are \u2013 their words to encourage, to exhort, to bless;
