Jason Houser remembers coming to the point in his marriage where, as a couple, they were in real trouble.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, coming from a divorced home, I knew at the time, \u201cLord I can\u2019t do this on my own, but I know I need to stay, and I promised my wife, and I promised I would be there for my kids.\u201d\u00a0 But we were both crying and I just left.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI may not come home tonight.\u00a0 I just need freedom and I just need to be alone.\u201d\u00a0 That was definitely that moment, when I left the house and was driving away, and I cried out to the Lord and said, \u201cLord, you\u2019ve got to bring me through this.\u201d\u00a0 I really cried out to the Lord, and he heard my cry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLifeToday<\/em> for Wednesday, May 11<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We\u2019ll talk to Jason Houser today about the spiritual realignment that took place in his life that made a big difference in his marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us on the Wednesday edition.\u00a0 One of the things we\u2019ve learned in years of ministering to marriages and to families is that things can look a lot different from the curb than they wind up looking in the kitchen.\u00a0 You know what I mean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re talking about reality.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m talking about the folks you\u2019re going to church with, maybe even you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There you go, who would never guess what\u2019s taking place in private.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It looks all polished and clean, but the reality is there\u2019s some drama going on behind the scenes.\u00a0 And oftentimes nobody knows about the drama until it\u2019s too late.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason I bring that us is because we\u2019ve been talking this week with the pioneer who came up with the Seeds Family Worship project, and put Scripture to music and families all around the country are using this as a part of their family devotions or as they drive around in the car, kids listening to this.\u00a0 You could get the idea, \u201cMan, that must just be the perfect family to live in.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean he sings, he writes songs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughing)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He and his wife, Heidi, have three children.\u00a0 They live in Idaho Falls, Idaho.\u00a0 Everything was perfect, right, Jason?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just saying, it\u2019s a picture-perfect situation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But I happen to know there was a time in your marriage when the picture was not as perfect as it is today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s a lot better today than it was, what was it, eleven years ago?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 It was about ten years ago.\u00a0 We were high school sweethearts, so we go way back.\u00a0 We dated in high school.\u00a0 It\u2019s one of those situations, when I first met her \u2013 she\u2019s a beautiful girl, we were at a party and I saw her, and I was like, \u201cWe need to go,\u201d\u00a0 and as clich\u00e9 as it sounds, you guys, our first date was the Twin Falls County Fair.\u00a0 (laughs)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, right.\u00a0 Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were trying to impress her, weren\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know, only the best, honey.\u00a0 She got a good idea of what she had to look forward to for the rest of her life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut anyway, that was our first date.\u00a0 We were just kids, and we dated through high school.\u00a0 But then I had the big dream of music and moved to Nashville.\u00a0 We tried to stay together for a season, but it just fell apart over time.\u00a0 So then, over the college years she went to the University of Idaho, but we\u2019d see each other, and we still had these feelings for each other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen there was a season when she was finishing school that she thought about coming to Nashville, and we were starting to get back together.\u00a0 I was afraid to get married at that season, so I thought, \u201cWell, moving to Nashville means I\u2019ve got to get married.\u201d\u00a0 That was my immaturity.\u00a0 So I blinked, unfortunately, and I said, \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure about that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo as a result, she was thinking about signing up for the Peace Corps, and so she signed up for the Peace Corps and she went across the world to the Fiji Islands.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was Nashville or the Peace Corps.\u00a0 You blinked and she went to Fiji.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Poor decision on my part.\u00a0 But I grew up a lot after I graduated from college and I was ready to get married before she left.\u00a0 She was like, \u201cYou know, I\u2019ve committed to do this.\u201d\u00a0 So, long story short, she served in the Peace Corps for a season, I flew over there and begged her to come home and marry me after a year, and she did, and we got married shortly thereafter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut part of what happened is in the season of dating and breaking up and getting back together, we had hurt each other in different ways.\u00a0 We were so happy to be back together, we just got married and we didn\u2019t deal with the things that we should have talked about.\u00a0 So what happened was, we brought those things into our marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOver time, we just put those things in the closet, but then we realized in a season we were growing apart, and we signed up for a marriage class in our church.\u00a0 We started going through this, but some of these things started coming up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLong story short, the Lord dealt with a lot of these things and the hurts from the past.\u00a0 It was heartbreaking for both of us to go through that, but God redeemed the situation and brought our marriage through that and did amazing things.\u00a0 After we recommitted to the Lord and really surrendered our marriage to the Lord, the next summer was when the beginning of the Seeds Family Worship Ministry was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now you had become a Christian when you were 14 years old.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And did you stay firm and faithful in your walk with the Lord?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 I didn\u2019t.\u00a0 When I went away to college, when I moved to Nashville \u2013 and I encourage parents and kids \u2013 when you go away to college, get connected with a church.\u00a0 Because I tried; I went to some churches and I didn\u2019t get connected, and then I just started hanging out with some of the wrong friends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou think you\u2019re going to leave the path a little ways, and you go a lot further.\u00a0 How sin deceives you.\u00a0 So it took a long time for me to get back on the path.\u00a0 Really, when we got to this marriage crisis situation that is when I really surrendered my life and my music and every bit of my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cLord, my great plan that I had, it didn\u2019t turn out so hot.\u00a0 Now I\u2019ve got two kids that are dependent on me and I\u2019ve got a wife, and I want to make this work but I can\u2019t do it without you.\u201d\u00a0 And that was the amazing turnaround.\u00a0 God was so faithful in what he did in us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the blessings that we have now \u2013 because I also just had fear about having another child, and I decided \u201cYes, let\u2019s have another child.\u201d\u00a0 Now we have our little girl, Abigail, and she\u2019s such a joy in my life.\u00a0 I see her just as a picture of God\u2019s grace because we trusted the Lord through that difficult time that he\u2019s blessed us with our family and our relationship.\u00a0 Our relationship is better than it\u2019s ever been.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What year did the crisis occur?\u00a0 In what year of marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was probably about year six or seven, because we got married in \u201995, and that was 2001.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019d been married a while when you went through your crisis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you remember a moment that was the darkest, filled with the most despair, and you thought, \u201cMaybe this thing is over.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Dennis, there was one day.\u00a0 After we had really unpacked everything and said, \u201cWe don\u2019t want to have any secrets from each other anymore,\u201d so we shared everything.\u00a0 At that time we were both crying and I just left.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI may not come home tonight.\u00a0 I just need freedom; I just need to be alone.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was definitely that moment, when I left the house and was driving away.\u00a0 Coming from a divorced home I was like, \u201cLord, I can\u2019t do this on my own.\u00a0 But I know I need to stay, and I promised my wife and I promised I\u2019d be there for my kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really cried out to the Lord, and he heard my cry, and he answered that prayer.\u00a0 I did come home that night.\u00a0 I came home and just said, \u201cLord, you\u2019ve got to bring me through this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was your point of anguish around your own failure as a husband and as a man in Heidi\u2019s life?\u00a0 Or was it the mess you were in at that moment, and you\u2019d just been reduced where you just had no other place to look but cry out to him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I think it\u2019s those things like I joke about, but you have this way you think your life is going to turn out.\u00a0 And marriage is the great sanctifier.\u00a0 You go into marriage, I think, thinking \u201cWhat am I going to get out of this?\u00a0 Here\u2019s a beautiful woman, she loves me, we\u2019re going to have a family, this is going to be awesome for me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughs)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou don\u2019t think that outright, but in your heart you\u2019re not thinking about what you\u2019re going to give; you\u2019re thinking about what you\u2019re going to get.\u00a0 God uses that to draw us closer to Christ.\u00a0 So this was the humbling time, and it was one of those times I grew up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was the point.\u00a0 It\u2019s not about you, and it\u2019s not about your plan and maybe your dream; God has a plan for you, and there are people that depend on you.\u00a0 Some people say musicians are immature.\u00a0 I guess, 31, it\u2019s about time, dude, for me to get on track, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, but what had to happen in that moment as you were leaving, or after you came back, somewhere in there, forgiveness had to be asked for \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 -- and forgiveness had to be expressed.\u00a0 I, for one, think the Christian community really ought to be pretty skilled in both asking for forgiveness and granting forgiveness, because of what we\u2019ve been forgiven for by God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But I\u2019m afraid we don\u2019t know how to do this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Mm hmm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What were the lessons you learned about forgiveness, both asking for it and granting it, with Heidi?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Well, the biggest lesson, Dennis, is Jesus is the Redeemer.\u00a0 He redeems these situations, so when you ask forgiveness and when you humble yourself \u2013 and we both did that for each other.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was exactly like you\u2019re saying.\u00a0 You have to say the words, \u201cWill you please forgive me for the ways that I\u2019ve hurt you?\u201d\u00a0 And then you need to hear, \u201cYes, I forgive you.\u201d As you guys know, they\u2019re both equally important.\u00a0 You have to be forgiven, and you do that in the marriage relationship, and then you repent to the Lord.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI encourage people, when you\u2019re struggling don\u2019t hide, because people can come help you.\u00a0 Your church can come alongside you, you can get counseling.\u00a0 It is worth it.\u00a0 You\u2019re saying, \u201cIs it worth going through this?\u201d\u00a0 Yes, it\u2019s worth it.\u00a0 God will bless that decision.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jason, I want to take you back to \u2013 you said at 14 you came to faith; during college you kind of faded spiritually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you got married, if I had stepped into your home and kind of taken your spiritual temperature, what would you have been on the hot\/cold scale?\u00a0 Where would you have been?\u00a0 Where would Heidi have been?\u00a0 Did you start your marriage saying \u201cThe Lord\u2019s going to be at the center of our life and our marriage and we\u2019re going to do this for him?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 We were Christians, and we went to church.\u00a0 We definitely were.\u00a0 I look back now, and I think we were believers, no question about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So then the question is, there was a metamorphosis that happened at some point that took you from what I hear you describing as somewhat shallow water into the deep end spiritually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Describe the difference in what your marriage and family is like today, versus what it was like when you were Christians and going to church, but it was still kind of a shallow experience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think it\u2019s so easy, because I\u2019m a dreamer, I\u2019m a visionary.\u00a0 Like I say, I had my plan for life.\u00a0 You\u2019re in your 20s, you\u2019re starting your family, you\u2019re pursuing your dreams, so you\u2019re moving in that direction.\u00a0 And the Lord is part of your life, but he\u2019s on the side, you know.\u00a0 Or maybe like in the meal of life, he\u2019s a side dish or a dessert.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s no question in his Word, he demands to be the center of our lives.\u00a0 \u201cTo love the Lord our God with heart, soul, mind and strength,\u201d that\u2019s the only place for the Lord.\u00a0 So I think it was a convenient place for us, and we loved the Lord, but I think it was just the commitment level, of what does that really mean?\u00a0 And so I\u2019m so thankful for the crisis time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Uh huh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because I think the great thing is, you go through those challenging times but you see God work, like God moved.\u00a0 And then as God moved in us in that season, Heidi\u2019s sister came and lived with us.\u00a0 She was going through a difficult time, and she came to know the Lord.\u00a0 We were a small part of that happening.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see how God is working.\u00a0 God is drawing you this whole time, and of course, he loves us so much that his patience, his mercy, his grace.\u00a0 Just like we love our children, it\u2019s like \u201cOh, here they\u2019ve fallen down again.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 But he doesn\u2019t sit there and go, \u201cLook, you\u2019ve fallen down again.\u201d\u00a0 He always, he wants what\u2019s best for you.\u00a0 But at the same time there are consequences for our sin that we have to deal with, and the forgiveness that we talked about, Dennis.\u00a0 You have to go through that process.\u00a0 There\u2019s no easy way through that process, but it\u2019s worth it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jason, we started FamilyLife in 1976, and honestly, I had no idea when we started it that we were going to intersect people\u2019s lives at two of the most defining moments of all of human existence.\u00a0 One is getting married . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 . . . and the other is having children.\u00a0 Both of those can be spiritual wake-up calls.\u00a0 What you said \u2013 you kind of said it under your breath as you scooted past it \u2013 as you told your story, you said you grew up at 31 years of age, and decided to step up and be a man at that point, and assumed the responsibility that comes with taking Heidi as your wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think sometimes people look at their marriage being off in the ditch like Bob\u2019s talking about, and you take a look at it and you go, \u201cThis is so terrible.\u201d\u00a0 Well, maybe it isn\u2019t.\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s the wakeup call, spiritually speaking, for you to finally get with it instead of playing church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And as you said, and rightly so, treating Jesus Christ like a side dish rather than the feast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and the treasure that he is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And to do marriage right, you have to make him the main thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you\u2019re not aware of this, but Jason shared with us earlier as the team was together that he has just recently put music to the Shema from Deuteronomy 6, which describes what you just said about your marriage \u2013 that Jesus ministering to marriages and to families is that things can look a lot different from the curb than they wind up looking in the kitchen.\u00a0 You know what I mean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re talking about reality.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m talking about the folks you\u2019re going to church with, maybe even you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There you go, who would never guess what\u2019s taking place in private.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It looks all polished and clean, but the reality is there\u2019s some drama going on behind the scenes.\u00a0 And oftentimes nobody knows about the drama until it\u2019s too late.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason I bring that us is because we\u2019ve been talking this week with the pioneer who came up with the Seeds Family Worship project, and put Scripture to music and families all around the country are using this as a part of their family devotions or as they drive around in the car, kids listening to this.\u00a0 You could get the idea, \u201cMan, that must just be the perfect family to live in.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean he sings, he writes songs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughing)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He and his wife, Heidi, have three children.\u00a0 They live in Idaho Falls, Idaho.\u00a0 Everything was perfect, right, Jason?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just saying, it\u2019s a picture-perfect situation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But I happen to know there was a time in your marriage when the picture was not as perfect as it is today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s a lot better today than it was, what was it, eleven years ago?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 It was about ten years ago.\u00a0 We were high school sweethearts, so we go way back.\u00a0 We dated in high school.\u00a0 It\u2019s one of those situations, when I first met her \u2013 she\u2019s a beautiful girl, we were at a party and I saw her, and I was like, \u201cWe need to go,\u201d\u00a0 and as clich\u00e9 as it sounds, you guys, our first date was the Twin Falls County Fair.\u00a0 (laughs)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, right.\u00a0 Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were trying to impress her, weren\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know, only the best, honey.\u00a0 She got a good idea of what she had to look forward to for the rest of her life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut anyway, that was our first date.\u00a0 We were just kids, and we dated through high school.\u00a0 But then I had the big dream of music and moved to Nashville.\u00a0 We tried to stay together for a season, but it just fell apart over time.\u00a0 So then, over the college years she went to the University of Idaho, but we\u2019d see each other, and we still had these feelings for each other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen there was a season when she was finishing school that she thought about coming to Nashville, and we were starting to get back together.\u00a0 I was afraid to get married at that season, so I thought, \u201cWell, moving to Nashville means I\u2019ve got to get married.\u201d\u00a0 That was my immaturity.\u00a0 So I blinked, unfortunately, and I said, \u201cI don\u2019t know.\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure about that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo as a result, she was thinking about signing up for the Peace Corps, and so she signed up for the Peace Corps and she went across the world to the Fiji Islands.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was Nashville or the Peace Corps.\u00a0 You blinked and she went to Fiji.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Poor decision on my part.\u00a0 But I grew up a lot after I graduated from college and I was ready to get married before she left.\u00a0 She was like, \u201cYou know, I\u2019ve committed to do this.\u201d\u00a0 So, long story short, she served in the Peace Corps for a season, I flew over there and begged her to come home and marry me after a year, and she did, and we got married shortly thereafter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut part of what happened is in the season of dating and breaking up and getting back together, we had hurt each other in different ways.\u00a0 We were so happy to be back together, we just got married and we didn\u2019t deal with the things that we should have talked about.\u00a0 So what happened was, we brought those things into our marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOver time, we just put those things in the closet, but then we realized in a season we were growing apart, and we signed up for a marriage class in our church.\u00a0 We started going through this, but some of these things started coming up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLong story short, the Lord dealt with a lot of these things and the hurts from the past.\u00a0 It was heartbreaking for both of us to go through that, but God redeemed the situation and brought our marriage through that and did amazing things.\u00a0 After we recommitted to the Lord and really surrendered our marriage to the Lord, the next summer was when the beginning of the Seeds Family Worship Ministry was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now you had become a Christian when you were 14 years old.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And did you stay firm and faithful in your walk with the Lord?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 I didn\u2019t.\u00a0 When I went away to college, when I moved to Nashville \u2013 and I encourage parents and kids \u2013 when you go away to college, get connected with a church.\u00a0 Because I tried; I went to some churches and I didn\u2019t get connected, and then I just started hanging out with some of the wrong friends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou think you\u2019re going to leave the path a little ways, and you go a lot further.\u00a0 How sin deceives you.\u00a0 So it took a long time for me to get back on the path.\u00a0 Really, when we got to this marriage crisis situation that is when I really surrendered my life and my music and every bit of my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cLord, my great plan that I had, it didn\u2019t turn out so hot.\u00a0 Now I\u2019ve got two kids that are dependent on me and I\u2019ve got a wife, and I want to make this work but I can\u2019t do it without you.\u201d\u00a0 And that was the amazing turnaround.\u00a0 God was so faithful in what he did in us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of the blessings that we have now \u2013 because I also just had fear about having another child, and I decided \u201cYes, let\u2019s have another child.\u201d\u00a0 Now we have our little girl, Abigail, and she\u2019s such a joy in my life.\u00a0 I see her just as a picture of God\u2019s grace because we trusted the Lord through that difficult time that he\u2019s blessed us with our family and our relationship.\u00a0 Our relationship is better than it\u2019s ever been.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What year did the crisis occur?\u00a0 In what year of marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was probably about year six or seven, because we got married in \u201995, and that was 2001.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019d been married a while when you went through your crisis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you remember a moment that was the darkest, filled with the most despair, and you thought, \u201cMaybe this thing is over.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Dennis, there was one day.\u00a0 After we had really unpacked everything and said, \u201cWe don\u2019t want to have any secrets from each other anymore,\u201d so we shared everything.\u00a0 At that time we were both crying and I just left.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI may not come home tonight.\u00a0 I just need freedom; I just need to be alone.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was definitely that moment, when I left the house and was driving away.\u00a0 Coming from a divorced home I was like, \u201cLord, I can\u2019t do this on my own.\u00a0 But I know I need to stay, and I promised my wife and I promised I\u2019d be there for my kids. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really cried out to the Lord, and he heard my cry, and he answered that prayer.\u00a0 I did come home that night.\u00a0 I came home and just said, \u201cLord, you\u2019ve got to bring me through this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was your point of anguish around your own failure as a husband and as a man in Heidi\u2019s life?\u00a0 Or was it the mess you were in at that moment, and you\u2019d just been reduced where you just had no other place to look but cry out to him?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I think it\u2019s those things like I joke about, but you have this way you think your life is going to turn out.\u00a0 And marriage is the great sanctifier.\u00a0 You go into marriage, I think, thinking \u201cWhat am I going to get out of this?\u00a0 Here\u2019s a beautiful woman, she loves me, we\u2019re going to have a family, this is going to be awesome for me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughs)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou don\u2019t think that outright, but in your heart you\u2019re not thinking about what you\u2019re going to give; you\u2019re thinking about what you\u2019re going to get.\u00a0 God uses that to draw us closer to Christ.\u00a0 So this was the humbling time, and it was one of those times I grew up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was the point.\u00a0 It\u2019s not about you, and it\u2019s not about your plan and maybe your dream; God has a plan for you, and there are people that depend on you.\u00a0 Some people say musicians are immature.\u00a0 I guess, 31, it\u2019s about time, dude, for me to get on track, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, but what had to happen in that moment as you were leaving, or after you came back, somewhere in there, forgiveness had to be asked for \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 -- and forgiveness had to be expressed.\u00a0 I, for one, think the Christian community really ought to be pretty skilled in both asking for forgiveness and granting forgiveness, because of what we\u2019ve been forgiven for by God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But I\u2019m afraid we don\u2019t know how to do this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Mm hmm.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What were the lessons you learned about forgiveness, both asking for it and granting it, with Heidi?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Well, the biggest lesson, Dennis, is Jesus is the Redeemer.\u00a0 He redeems these situations, so when you ask forgiveness and when you humble yourself \u2013 and we both did that for each other.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was exactly like you\u2019re saying.\u00a0 You have to say the words, \u201cWill you please forgive me for the ways that I\u2019ve hurt you?\u201d\u00a0 And then you need to hear, \u201cYes, I forgive you.\u201d As you guys know, they\u2019re both equally important.\u00a0 You have to be forgiven, and you do that in the marriage relationship, and then you repent to the Lord.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI encourage people, when you\u2019re struggling don\u2019t hide, because people can come help you.\u00a0 Your church can come alongside you, you can get counseling.\u00a0 It is worth it.\u00a0 You\u2019re saying, \u201cIs it worth going through this?\u201d\u00a0 Yes, it\u2019s worth it.\u00a0 God will bless that decision.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jason, I want to take you back to \u2013 you said at 14 you came to faith; during college you kind of faded spiritually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you got married, if I had stepped into your home and kind of taken your spiritual temperature, what would you have been on the hot\/cold scale?\u00a0 Where would you have been?\u00a0 Where would Heidi have been?\u00a0 Did you start your marriage saying \u201cThe Lord\u2019s going to be at the center of our life and our marriage and we\u2019re going to do this for him?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 We were Christians, and we went to church.\u00a0 We definitely were.\u00a0 I look back now, and I think we were believers, no question about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So then the question is, there was a metamorphosis that happened at some point that took you from what I hear you describing as somewhat shallow water into the deep end spiritually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Describe the difference in what your marriage and family is like today, versus what it was like when you were Christians and going to church, but it was still kind of a shallow experience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think it\u2019s so easy, because I\u2019m a dreamer, I\u2019m a visionary.\u00a0 Like I say, I had my plan for life.\u00a0 You\u2019re in your 20s, you\u2019re starting your family, you\u2019re pursuing your dreams, so you\u2019re moving in that direction.\u00a0 And the Lord is part of your life, but he\u2019s on the side, you know.\u00a0 Or maybe like in the meal of life, he\u2019s a side dish or a dessert.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere\u2019s no question in his Word, he demands to be the center of our lives.\u00a0 \u201cTo love the Lord our God with heart, soul, mind and strength,\u201d that\u2019s the only place for the Lord.\u00a0 So I think it was a convenient place for us, and we loved the Lord, but I think it was just the commitment level, of what does that really mean?\u00a0 And so I\u2019m so thankful for the crisis time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Uh huh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because I think the great thing is, you go through those challenging times but you see God work, like God moved.\u00a0 And then as God moved in us in that season, Heidi\u2019s sister came and lived with us.\u00a0 She was going through a difficult time, and she came to know the Lord.\u00a0 We were a small part of that happening.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see how God is working.\u00a0 God is drawing you this whole time, and of course, he loves us so much that his patience, his mercy, his grace.\u00a0 Just like we love our children, it\u2019s like \u201cOh, here they\u2019ve fallen down again.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 But he doesn\u2019t sit there and go, \u201cLook, you\u2019ve fallen down again.\u201d\u00a0 He always, he wants what\u2019s best for you.\u00a0 But at the same time there are consequences for our sin that we have to deal with, and the forgiveness that we talked about, Dennis.\u00a0 You have to go through that process.\u00a0 There\u2019s no easy way through that process, but it\u2019s worth it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jason, we started FamilyLife in 1976, and honestly, I had no idea when we started it that we were going to intersect people\u2019s lives at two of the most defining moments of all of human existence.\u00a0 One is getting married . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 . . . and the other is having children.\u00a0 Both of those can be spiritual wake-up calls.\u00a0 What you said \u2013 you kind of said it under your breath as you scooted past it \u2013 as you told your story, you said you grew up at 31 years of age, and decided to step up and be a man at that point, and assumed the responsibility that comes with taking Heidi as your wife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think sometimes people look at their marriage being off in the ditch like Bob\u2019s talking about, and you take a look at it and you go, \u201cThis is so terrible.\u201d\u00a0 Well, maybe it isn\u2019t.\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s the wakeup call, spiritually speaking, for you to finally get with it instead of playing church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And as you said, and rightly so, treating Jesus Christ like a side dish rather than the feast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and the treasure that he is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And to do marriage right, you have to make him the main thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you\u2019re not aware of this,
