In addition to having regular family times where you read the Bible together or where you discuss spiritual issues, Deuteronomy 6 tells us that we are to be engaging with our children around God\u2019s Word as they lie down, as they rise up, and as we walk along the way.\u00a0 Here\u2019s Seeds Family Worship\u2019s Jason Houser with one way that that might work.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are times that you can redeem.\u00a0 Like I drive my kids to school two or three days a week, and my son has an iPod, I have an iPhone, we have the Bible on them, so we\u2019re reading through the book of Proverbs.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt just sparks great conversations.\u00a0 It\u2019s time we would have been doing it anyway.\u00a0 We would have just listened to the radio.\u00a0 I want to read through the book of Proverbs with my kids before they\u2019re grown, it\u2019s a goal, so we\u2019re blasting around God\u2019s Word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 Back when your kids were young and you would try to round them up for a family night, some time when you were going to do something in the Word, was singing a part of that at your house?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, we tried that, and as you know, Bob, our family is musically challenged.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven with CDs it\u2019s still musically challenged.\u00a0 When we listened to most of the music for kids that was made back then, you know <em>Bullfrogs and Butterflies<\/em> and all the music that was designed for them, we would do it as we traveled across the country on vacation.\u00a0 It was a great time for kids to learn some valuable spiritual lessons, and we would all be humming some of those songs for a long, long time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was an old <em>Hide \u2018em In Your Heart<\/em> song that Steve Green did that our kids learned.\u00a0 It took the verse \u201cKeep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking guile:\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Music:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Keep much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks.\u00a0 It\u2019s good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I\u2019m glad you guys have got real talent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Otherwise the show would be in real trouble.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, Tom, first of all, you\u2019re from the Minneapolis\/St. Paul area, you go to Bethlehem Baptist, which is Dr. John Piper\u2019s church where he teaches.\u00a0 You\u2019re an IT guy during the day, and in the evenings you\u2019re leading a volunteer team of more than fifty people that are cranking out family worship songs for what age group children?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 Our target market is for families with school-age children, that\u2019s the center of the bull\u2019s eye, and then out from there it\u2019s everybody else.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re talking elementary age?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 Elementary, junior high \u2013 type age children.\u00a0 That\u2019s our focus, but there are songs in the mix, since we release about thirty some songs every year, there are songs in there \u2013 we\u2019ve got jazz to blues to pop and rock.\u00a0 There are lots of different styles to appeal to people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jason, you\u2019re a singer\/songwriter and have your own company that has written a bunch of great songs for secular singers . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right, right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But you got a vision for a project that you call Seeds Family Worship, and you\u2019re designing music for families as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What age group?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the core of what we do is elementary age, but it reaches into teenagers and really young \u2013 they\u2019ll see two- or three-year-olds at our concerts, really singing the words.\u00a0 Before they can read, they can actually be grasping some of these Scriptures.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the core is we want to set a biblical world view, use these songs to help the elementary age really start to grasp the Bible, and the music prompts them to ask questions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you led worship in a chapel service here at FamilyLife, we invited families to bring their kids in, and I remember looking at this sweet five-year-old girl, just singing along, knowing every word of every song you were doing, and then I looked up and her mom was singing just as loud and just as passionately.\u00a0 In fact, I looked at all of the moms in the audience and I thought, \u201cThese moms like these songs as much as the kids do, I think.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it\u2019s been amazing for us, because when we started our ministry it was really for kids, but we actually renamed it Seeds <em>Family<\/em> Worship because so many moms and dads were coming saying, \u201cThis music has blessed us so much.\u201d\u00a0 What we try to do musically is capture the Scripture, you know, kind of put the emotion behind, and we try to make it fun.\u00a0 It\u2019s young and energetic, but we try to capture the text.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that\u2019s one of the things both of you are doing.\u00a0 You\u2019re putting Scripture to music, not just writing worship songs, but putting actual word-for-word verses.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What version of the Bible do you guys use at Bethlehem?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re using right now in <em>The Fighter Verses<\/em> it\u2019s the ESV Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 English Standard.\u00a0 And you\u2019ve used NIV through most of the projects that you\u2019ve done, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 We\u2019ve used NIV through the last five projects.\u00a0 The new project is actually ESV, because the new church where I am serving \u2013 ironically enough, I am the pastor of Family Life as of a month ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Congratulations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 So, God has a good sense of humor in that, but we use the ESV at the church and there\u2019s also a school, so we\u2019ve moved over to ESV because it will just help serve our church body the best.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now both of you are young fathers.\u00a0 Tom, how many kids do you have?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 Four.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And ages?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 Seven, five, three and ten months.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, my goodness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s in it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And Jason, you\u2019ve got a few less, but . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we have three kids.\u00a0 My wife is Heidi, and Benjamin is our oldest.\u00a0 He\u2019s 12.\u00a0 Brandon\u2019s our middle man; he\u2019s nine.\u00a0 Abigail is our little girl, and she is six.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So when you sit down with them, do you try to something most days, every day, once a week?\u00a0 How do you do it at your house?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 The way that we do it \u2013 structure for us, you know \u2013 we kind of have a crazy life with me traveling and different things.\u00a0 I encourage families, don\u2019t get caught up in trying to put too much structure, like to be religious in the wrong way about things.\u00a0 What we try to do is the time right before bed is a devotion time for us, but if we do one to two times a week and our kids are involved in Bible study that they go to at their kids\u2019 club and then we have church on Sunday \u2013 we try to have four spiritual imprints on their life a week, but some of them we try to do with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo at night we\u2019ll sit down.\u00a0 We\u2019re reading through the book of John now.\u00a0 We\u2019re not using a devotional.\u00a0 We open up the Book, you know.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how long that\u2019s going to take us, not as long as it maybe will take John Piper to get through a book, you know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we\u2019ll read a section of Scripture and we\u2019ll just talk about it.\u00a0 I have a study Bible and if we need to dig in, and if they ask questions that we don\u2019t know, too, I\u2019ve had to go to our Pastor even at times and say, \u201cHey, my son\u2019s asking this question.\u201d\u00a0 So we do that.\u00a0 And the other thing, just an idea for families out there, is on the way to school, there\u2019s times that you can redeem.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(all during our worship time we don\u2019t at home.\u00a0 Our church is so musical and we do a lot of praise and worship through our church, and they go to a Christian school.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut actually my kids are starting to play instruments, so we\u2019re going to try to have a family worship time where we all are playing.\u00a0 That\u2019s my next thing, to where we can sit down and go, \u201cOkay . . . \u201c\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a set of drums, and then one son\u2019s playing the guitar and I can play piano and we can do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I know you write and you actually lead a team of folks who do a lot of songwriting.\u00a0 Do you have a favorite, because I\u2019d like to hear one from your album \u2013 one of your songs?\u00a0 What\u2019s your favorite?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Whew. Boy, that\u2019s a tough question.\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 You know the song that\u2019s coming into my mind right now when you asked that is from <em>The Seeds of Courage<\/em> CD.\u00a0 It\u2019s <em>Young<\/em>, and it\u2019s 1 Timothy 4:12 \u2013 \u201cDon\u2019t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and deeper level than if you just learn it as a spoken word, don\u2019t you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, there\u2019s something about the melody that brings the recall of the lyric back, and so it\u2019s like \u2013 it\u2019s just some heavier glue that you\u2019ve used to hide that in your heart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTom, I want to ask you as you\u2019re involved with the <em>Fighter Verse <\/em>song project at Bethlehem Baptist, you said you\u2019re a parent of a seven, five, three and ten-month, is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 To try to do some kind of family worship or family night with kids that age, that\u2019s a tough chore, because your two-year-old and your seven-year-old are miles apart in terms of cognitive ability, in terms of level of engagement, and some families sit down and try to do this and about three minutes later they say, \u201cWell that\u2019s the last family night we\u2019re ever going to have at our house.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How do you do it, and what do you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love what Jason said about structure versus non-structure.\u00a0 We have rhythms and movements in families that, throughout our days that we go through, not everybody eats every meal together anymore, but I\u2019ve made it a priority in my home to eat dinner together, and so we sit around the table and I\u2019m able to do a devotion at that time while the kids are eating.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRight now we just worked through Genesis.\u00a0 There\u2019s a great little book that we use called <em>Long Stories Short<\/em>, and it helps walk through that with some questions and makes it explainable for the kids and reminds parents about how to teach their children, and engages the children.\u00a0 So I can ask my three-year-old, Eleana, \u201cWhat was it that God put in the sky to remind us of his covenant with us that he would no longer destroy the earth again?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So here it is, you\u2019re very talented musically.\u00a0 Do you do a lot of singing in your family time together?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, in our family time together we do a lot of music in our family, and we love it, but that doesn\u2019t mean that people can\u2019t pick that up.\u00a0 For us, it\u2019s about redeeming the time, as Jason said.\u00a0 We have times together, but often it\u2019s just, okay, people are together in the living room, Dad picks up the guitar, and I\u2019ll start playing, and my kids dance and we\u2019ll sing along and rejoice in that together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSometimes it\u2019s in the middle of the night.\u00a0 My daughters will wake up and they\u2019ll be afraid.\u00a0 Just a couple of weeks ago with Psalm 56, verses 3 and 4 -- \u201cWhen I am afraid, I put my trust in you, in God whose word I praise, in God I trust.\u00a0 I shall not be afraid; what can flesh do to me?\u201d -- in the middle of the night, comes home to my children\u2019s hearts.\u00a0 Not only can I say that verse to them and they might know it, but their heart sings.\u00a0 We say, \u201cShall we sing that together?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cYes, let\u2019s sing that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you guys have written a Fighter Verse song for that verse, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we have.\u00a0 My good friend, Phil Carlson, wrote that, and it\u2019s a beautiful song that has in the spirit of the song to help calm the hearts.\u00a0 I\u2019ve used it many times with my children; they absolutely love it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re going to play it and let unknown, whatever it is.\u00a0 Just for the kids to know \u2013 \u201cWhen I am afraid, I will trust in you,\u201d right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you, any time we ever tried to do a family devotional, whether it involved memorizing Scripture or attempting to have a family night, there were discouraging things that would happen.\u00a0 I mean, it was like it was a collusion of the children trying to figure out, \u201cHow can we undermine this by doing some of the silliest, crazy things that your parents could never imagine?\u201d\u00a0 Does that ever happen at your house, Jason?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, man.\u00a0 Boy, that just strikes a chord with me, because when we started \u2013 I made the commitment and families do that, and maybe some families that are listening to this will say, \u201cYou know, we\u2019re going to really try to do that in our home.\u201d\u00a0 For a dad to sit down and lead his family when he hasn\u2019t done that before, and you sit down, and this is what was in my heart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I sat down with the kids on the floor of my boys\u2019 bedroom.\u00a0 They\u2019ve got bunk beds and we\u2019re sitting on the carpet, and start doing this devotion time.\u00a0 It was so stressful, they were so out of control, they were so wound up that night \u2013 I just thought, \u201cMan, this was a complete failure\u201d at the end, and then I just leave totally stressed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then so we tried that over the next couple of weeks.\u00a0 It was just really hard.\u00a0 I believe, and I want to encourage families, those are real spiritual battles that are going on at that time.\u00a0 I was really discouraged about that, but I pressed on, and by the grace of God, just to go, \u201cWe\u2019re going to do this.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then Brandon, my middle man, who is a lot like his dad, a lot of energy and it\u2019s got to be channeled in the right direction; you know what I\u2019m saying?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We get the picture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah!\u00a0 And so he, after I had shared a devotion time and I wish I could remember exactly what it was, but it was a gospel truth that for his age \u2013 I believe he was about maybe five years old at the time \u2013 he really grasped what I\u2019d been teaching for the past two weeks.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m like, \u201cYou got that?\u00a0 You got that!\u201d\u00a0 It was amazing, so I want to encourage families to press through those challenges because there will be spiritual battles.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have to make it fun.\u00a0 All the research that I\u2019ve done, I\u2019ve heard people say that with the age of the child, and of course you\u2019re dealing with different ages like what you have, Tom.\u00a0 Obviously, you\u2019re going to have different ages that you\u2019re dealing with \u2013 like maybe five minutes.\u00a0 Start with five to ten minutes, but the age of the oldest child, let that be your maximum time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you know what I mean?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s good.\u00a0 That\u2019s good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or maybe it\u2019s the youngest child, but really to start with five or ten minutes.\u00a0 If you can do less time more consistently, I think you\u2019re going to see greater fruit from that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just encourage parents; don\u2019t beat you up when it doesn\u2019t go great.\u00a0 Just get back up, pray that the Lord will give you the strength just to keep going.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And if you\u2019re having work.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are times that you can redeem.\u00a0 Like I drive my kids to school two or three days a week, and my son has an iPod, I have an iPhone, we have the Bible on them, so we\u2019re reading through the book of Proverbs.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt just sparks great conversations.\u00a0 It\u2019s time we would have been doing it anyway.\u00a0 We would have just listened to the radio.\u00a0 I want to read through the book of Proverbs with my kids before they\u2019re grown, it\u2019s a goal, so we\u2019re blasting around God\u2019s Word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 Back when your kids were young and you would try to round them up for a family night, some time when you were going to do something in the Word, was singing a part of that at your house?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, we tried that, and as you know, Bob, our family is musically challenged.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEven with CDs it\u2019s still musically challenged.\u00a0 When we listened to most of the music for kids that was made back then, you know <em>Bullfrogs and Butterflies<\/em> and all the music that was designed for them, we would do it as we traveled across the country on vacation.\u00a0 It was a great time for kids to learn some valuable spiritual lessons, and we would all be humming some of those songs for a long, long time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was an old <em>Hide \u2018em In Your Heart<\/em> song that Steve Green did that our kids learned.\u00a0 It took the verse \u201cKeep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking guile:\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Music:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Keep much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks.\u00a0 It\u2019s good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I\u2019m glad you guys have got real talent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Otherwise the show would be in real trouble.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, Tom, first of all, you\u2019re from the Minneapolis\/St. Paul area, you go to Bethlehem Baptist, which is Dr. John Piper\u2019s church where he teaches.\u00a0 You\u2019re an IT guy during the day, and in the evenings you\u2019re leading a volunteer team of more than fifty people that are cranking out family worship songs for what age group children?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 Our target market is for families with school-age children, that\u2019s the center of the bull\u2019s eye, and then out from there it\u2019s everybody else.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re talking elementary age?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 Elementary, junior high \u2013 type age children.\u00a0 That\u2019s our focus, but there are songs in the mix, since we release about thirty some songs every year, there are songs in there \u2013 we\u2019ve got jazz to blues to pop and rock.\u00a0 There are lots of different styles to appeal to people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jason, you\u2019re a singer\/songwriter and have your own company that has written a bunch of great songs for secular singers . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right, right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But you got a vision for a project that you call Seeds Family Worship, and you\u2019re designing music for families as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What age group?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the core of what we do is elementary age, but it reaches into teenagers and really young \u2013 they\u2019ll see two- or three-year-olds at our concerts, really singing the words.\u00a0 Before they can read, they can actually be grasping some of these Scriptures.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the core is we want to set a biblical world view, use these songs to help the elementary age really start to grasp the Bible, and the music prompts them to ask questions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you led worship in a chapel service here at FamilyLife, we invited families to bring their kids in, and I remember looking at this sweet five-year-old girl, just singing along, knowing every word of every song you were doing, and then I looked up and her mom was singing just as loud and just as passionately.\u00a0 In fact, I looked at all of the moms in the audience and I thought, \u201cThese moms like these songs as much as the kids do, I think.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it\u2019s been amazing for us, because when we started our ministry it was really for kids, but we actually renamed it Seeds <em>Family<\/em> Worship because so many moms and dads were coming saying, \u201cThis music has blessed us so much.\u201d\u00a0 What we try to do musically is capture the Scripture, you know, kind of put the emotion behind, and we try to make it fun.\u00a0 It\u2019s young and energetic, but we try to capture the text.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that\u2019s one of the things both of you are doing.\u00a0 You\u2019re putting Scripture to music, not just writing worship songs, but putting actual word-for-word verses.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What version of the Bible do you guys use at Bethlehem?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re using right now in <em>The Fighter Verses<\/em> it\u2019s the ESV Bible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 English Standard.\u00a0 And you\u2019ve used NIV through most of the projects that you\u2019ve done, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 We\u2019ve used NIV through the last five projects.\u00a0 The new project is actually ESV, because the new church where I am serving \u2013 ironically enough, I am the pastor of Family Life as of a month ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Congratulations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 So, God has a good sense of humor in that, but we use the ESV at the church and there\u2019s also a school, so we\u2019ve moved over to ESV because it will just help serve our church body the best.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now both of you are young fathers.\u00a0 Tom, how many kids do you have?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 Four.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And ages?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 Seven, five, three and ten months.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, my goodness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s in it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> And Jason, you\u2019ve got a few less, but . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we have three kids.\u00a0 My wife is Heidi, and Benjamin is our oldest.\u00a0 He\u2019s 12.\u00a0 Brandon\u2019s our middle man; he\u2019s nine.\u00a0 Abigail is our little girl, and she is six.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So when you sit down with them, do you try to something most days, every day, once a week?\u00a0 How do you do it at your house?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 The way that we do it \u2013 structure for us, you know \u2013 we kind of have a crazy life with me traveling and different things.\u00a0 I encourage families, don\u2019t get caught up in trying to put too much structure, like to be religious in the wrong way about things.\u00a0 What we try to do is the time right before bed is a devotion time for us, but if we do one to two times a week and our kids are involved in Bible study that they go to at their kids\u2019 club and then we have church on Sunday \u2013 we try to have four spiritual imprints on their life a week, but some of them we try to do with us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo at night we\u2019ll sit down.\u00a0 We\u2019re reading through the book of John now.\u00a0 We\u2019re not using a devotional.\u00a0 We open up the Book, you know.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how long that\u2019s going to take us, not as long as it maybe will take John Piper to get through a book, you know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we\u2019ll read a section of Scripture and we\u2019ll just talk about it.\u00a0 I have a study Bible and if we need to dig in, and if they ask questions that we don\u2019t know, too, I\u2019ve had to go to our Pastor even at times and say, \u201cHey, my son\u2019s asking this question.\u201d\u00a0 So we do that.\u00a0 And the other thing, just an idea for families out there, is on the way to school, there\u2019s times that you can redeem.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(all \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut actually my kids are starting to play instruments, so we\u2019re going to try to have a family worship time where we all are playing.\u00a0 That\u2019s my next thing, to where we can sit down and go, \u201cOkay . . . \u201c\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a set of drums, and then one son\u2019s playing the guitar and I can play piano and we can do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I know you write and you actually lead a team of folks who do a lot of songwriting.\u00a0 Do you have a favorite, because I\u2019d like to hear one from your album \u2013 one of your songs?\u00a0 What\u2019s your favorite?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Whew. Boy, that\u2019s a tough question.\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 You know the song that\u2019s coming into my mind right now when you asked that is from <em>The Seeds of Courage<\/em> CD.\u00a0 It\u2019s <em>Young<\/em>, and it\u2019s 1 Timothy 4:12 \u2013 \u201cDon\u2019t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and deeper level than if you just learn it as a spoken word, don\u2019t you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, there\u2019s something about the melody that brings the recall of the lyric back, and so it\u2019s like \u2013 it\u2019s just some heavier glue that you\u2019ve used to hide that in your heart.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTom, I want to ask you as you\u2019re involved with the <em>Fighter Verse <\/em>song project at Bethlehem Baptist, you said you\u2019re a parent of a seven, five, three and ten-month, is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 To try to do some kind of family worship or family night with kids that age, that\u2019s a tough chore, because your two-year-old and your seven-year-old are miles apart in terms of cognitive ability, in terms of level of engagement, and some families sit down and try to do this and about three minutes later they say, \u201cWell that\u2019s the last family night we\u2019re ever going to have at our house.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How do you do it, and what do you do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love what Jason said about structure versus non-structure.\u00a0 We have rhythms and movements in families that, throughout our days that we go through, not everybody eats every meal together anymore, but I\u2019ve made it a priority in my home to eat dinner together, and so we sit around the table and I\u2019m able to do a devotion at that time while the kids are eating.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRight now we just worked through Genesis.\u00a0 There\u2019s a great little book that we use called <em>Long Stories Short<\/em>, and it helps walk through that with some questions and makes it explainable for the kids and reminds parents about how to teach their children, and engages the children.\u00a0 So I can ask my three-year-old, Eleana, \u201cWhat was it that God put in the sky to remind us of his covenant with us that he would no longer destroy the earth again?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So here it is, you\u2019re very talented musically.\u00a0 Do you do a lot of singing in your family time together?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, in our family time together we do a lot of music in our family, and we love it, but that doesn\u2019t mean that people can\u2019t pick that up.\u00a0 For us, it\u2019s about redeeming the time, as Jason said.\u00a0 We have times together, but often it\u2019s just, okay, people are together in the living room, Dad picks up the guitar, and I\u2019ll start playing, and my kids dance and we\u2019ll sing along and rejoice in that together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSometimes it\u2019s in the middle of the night.\u00a0 My daughters will wake up and they\u2019ll be afraid.\u00a0 Just a couple of weeks ago with Psalm 56, verses 3 and 4 -- \u201cWhen I am afraid, I put my trust in you, in God whose word I praise, in God I trust.\u00a0 I shall not be afraid; what can flesh do to me?\u201d -- in the middle of the night, comes home to my children\u2019s hearts.\u00a0 Not only can I say that verse to them and they might know it, but their heart sings.\u00a0 We say, \u201cShall we sing that together?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cYes, let\u2019s sing that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you guys have written a Fighter Verse song for that verse, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we have.\u00a0 My good friend, Phil Carlson, wrote that, and it\u2019s a beautiful song that has in the spirit of the song to help calm the hearts.\u00a0 I\u2019ve used it many times with my children; they absolutely love it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re going to play it and let unknown, whatever it is.\u00a0 Just for the kids to know \u2013 \u201cWhen I am afraid, I will trust in you,\u201d right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you, any time we ever tried to do a family devotional, whether it involved memorizing Scripture or attempting to have a family night, there were discouraging things that would happen.\u00a0 I mean, it was like it was a collusion of the children trying to figure out, \u201cHow can we undermine this by doing some of the silliest, crazy things that your parents could never imagine?\u201d\u00a0 Does that ever happen at your house, Jason?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, man.\u00a0 Boy, that just strikes a chord with me, because when we started \u2013 I made the commitment and families do that, and maybe some families that are listening to this will say, \u201cYou know, we\u2019re going to really try to do that in our home.\u201d\u00a0 For a dad to sit down and lead his family when he hasn\u2019t done that before, and you sit down, and this is what was in my heart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I sat down with the kids on the floor of my boys\u2019 bedroom.\u00a0 They\u2019ve got bunk beds and we\u2019re sitting on the carpet, and start doing this devotion time.\u00a0 It was so stressful, they were so out of control, they were so wound up that night \u2013 I just thought, \u201cMan, this was a complete failure\u201d at the end, and then I just leave totally stressed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then so we tried that over the next couple of weeks.\u00a0 It was just really hard.\u00a0 I believe, and I want to encourage families, those are real spiritual battles that are going on at that time.\u00a0 I was really discouraged about that, but I pressed on, and by the grace of God, just to go, \u201cWe\u2019re going to do this.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then Brandon, my middle man, who is a lot like his dad, a lot of energy and it\u2019s got to be channeled in the right direction; you know what I\u2019m saying?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We get the picture.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah!\u00a0 And so he, after I had shared a devotion time and I wish I could remember exactly what it was, but it was a gospel truth that for his age \u2013 I believe he was about maybe five years old at the time \u2013 he really grasped what I\u2019d been teaching for the past two weeks.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m like, \u201cYou got that?\u00a0 You got that!\u201d\u00a0 It was amazing, so I want to encourage families to press through those challenges because there will be spiritual battles.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have to make it fun.\u00a0 All the research that I\u2019ve done, I\u2019ve heard people say that with the age of the child, and of course you\u2019re dealing with different ages like what you have, Tom.\u00a0 Obviously, you\u2019re going to have different ages that you\u2019re dealing with \u2013 like maybe five minutes.\u00a0 Start with five to ten minutes, but the age of the oldest child, let that be your maximum time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you know what I mean?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s good.\u00a0 That\u2019s good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or maybe it\u2019s the youngest child, but really to start with five or ten minutes.\u00a0 If you can do less time more consistently, I think you\u2019re going to see greater fruit from that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Tom:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jason:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just encourage parents; don\u2019t beat you up when it doesn\u2019t go great.\u00a0 Just get back up, pray that the Lord will give you the strength just to keep going.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And if you\u2019re having
