our lives for the future that only He can see.\u201d\u00a0 This is the advantage of being older.\u00a0 You have the opportunity to look back and see people that we\u2019ve met that look like they were a part of normal life, but they were divinely placed there.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to wait on Him to let the timing all work out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is women to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to FamilyLife Today.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 Do you ever find it\u2019s difficult to know in a given circumstance?\u00a0 Do you step out in faith?\u00a0 Do you wait on the Lord?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Those are both Biblical admonitions, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So what are you supposed to do here?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are a lot of folks that subscribe to hammock theology.\u00a0 You know what a hammock is?\u00a0 You know what you do in a hammock?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do!\u00a0 I like doing it too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You just nap.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I like that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You don\u2019t take responsibility for anything.\u00a0 You just go to sleep.\u00a0 And that theology is \u201clet go and let God.\u2019\u00a0 It\u2019s kind of like \u201cI don\u2019t have any responsibility.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And that\u2019s not true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But at the same time there are a lot of folks who charge on ahead, like \u201cI\u2019m in control.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got this.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s the other one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2026and they\u2019re not waiting on the Lord.\u00a0 They\u2019re just kind of just moving forward.\u00a0 So how do you know which is right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You listen.\u00a0 You listen to the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 A lot of people really don\u2019t understand that God in the person of Jesus Christ came to the planet, He finished His life\u2019s work here, went to the cross, died, then was buried, then was resurrected, and forty days later ascended into heaven.\u00a0 But as He left He sent the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 He sent the Holy Spirit to guide us into truth, to teach us, to comfort us, and in situations like this, Bob, I know this sounds a bit mysterious, and it is, but He relates to us as a person guiding us, when to step out and when to wait, when to just pause.\u00a0 Not necessarily run ahead of God but wait for Him to act.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not an equation.\u00a0 This life is not a two plus two equals four.\u00a0 It\u2019s about us as His creatures and his Creation, relating to Him, get to know His heart, get to know His Word.\u00a0 His will is always revealed in Scripture. To put all of that in balance and live that out in a dynamic relationship with God, where we\u2019re going to fail numerous times, but the promise is He will never leave us nor forsake us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve got some guests who are with us today who are going to help us understand that paradox of stepping out and waiting on the Lord and how to understand when and how and all of that, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We do.\u00a0 A mother\/daughter combo.\u00a0 We get two for the price of one here.\u00a0 Kathie Reimer and Lisa Whittle join us on FamilyLife Today.\u00a0 Kathy, Lisa, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kathie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s great to be here.\u00a0 Yes it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Lisa is an author, speaker, wife, mother of three, and as I mentioned, Kathie\u2019s daughter.\u00a0 Where do you fit in, Lisa?\u00a0 There are two others.\u00a0 Are you the oldest, youngest, or middle?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m the middle but I was the baby for twelve years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So you milked it, in other words.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 I am all confused in the birth order but I actually operate more as a first born.\u00a0 So what in the world?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you have anything to add to that, Kathie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kathie:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I think she\u2019s right!\u00a0 Well, and she was the only girl. I feel like all our children are only children.\u00a0 And I think that\u2019s the way God looks at us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How about that!\u00a0 Well, Kathie is an author and educator.\u00a0 Together they\u2019ve written a book called <em>The Seven Hardest Things God Asks a Woman to Do<\/em>.\u00a0 Lisa, there\u2019s a story you tell in the book that\u2019s a great illustration of one of these hard things that God calls a women to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s this \u201cdo I wait on the Lord or do I step out in faith\u201d issue that we\u2019re talking about, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 I loved the way that Dennis said that and set me up perfectly for this chapter four.\u00a0 It really is this dependency on the Holy Spirit. Sometimes we don\u2019t like to hear that because we are better at proceeding, I think, than waiting.\u00a0 But both of them are difficult sometimes.\u00a0 To step out and do things when we\u2019re timid particularly when life doesn\u2019t work out the way we want it to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Which is where you found yourself in, what was it, 1993?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s exactly where I found myself.\u00a0 I was a college student.\u00a0 I had been engaged.\u00a0 I had a long relationship with someone that I loved and cared deeply for.\u00a0 As many relationships do, it didn\u2019t work out.\u00a0 We broke up.\u00a0 I was at a point in my life where I went home to be with my parents and to kind of recover, to just be alone and spend time with God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was at a point where I felt that God was drawing me to then proceed and to do something else.\u00a0 I was afraid.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know anyone in this particular place I was going.\u00a0 I was going to go to graduate school.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have a lot of information and that\u2019s one of the things that\u2019s hard for us.\u00a0 When we don\u2019t have the information in front of us and yet we feel drawn by the Holy Spirit to do something that we know is something that He wants us to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to graduate school about two months after the breakup and had no idea what was in store for me.\u00a0 But that is the place where I met my very best girlfriend who is really more like a sister to me to this day.\u00a0 We\u2019ve journeyed through many difficult things together and it is where I met my future husband.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I know I was prompted to God to make that choice and to step out and do that.\u00a0 I was afraid but I knew that was something He wanted me to do.\u00a0 And that\u2019s an example of proceeding without all the information. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were at a hard spot because I don\u2019t know how long, in college, you had been pointed in one direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When did you get engaged?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 I got engaged in the middle of my college experience and I had been engaged for about a year when we broke up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019d been dating for three years, you\u2019d been engaged for a year, you\u2019re aiming right at \u201cI know where the future is and I\u2019m going there.\u201d\u00a0 And then all of a sudden it blows up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You pull back and go, \u201cNow what?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 I think a lot of us find ourselves in those positions where we map out the way that we think life is going to go.\u00a0 Or even life is kind of leading us in a certain direction so we go with it.\u00a0 I think when those moments happen where life is altered in some way, maybe by a choice we make, maybe by a choice we didn\u2019t have a voice in at all, we find ourselves in this place where we really do have to make decisions based on the prompting of the Holy Spirit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kathie, do you remember the phone call you got from your daughter from college?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kathie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do, like yesterday.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I do remember.\u00a0 I remember the hurt and the difficulty in waiting and taking a step based on the best knowledge she had at the time, trusting in God, that He was going to lead her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you remember how you counseled her when she says, \u201cMom, I\u2019ve been planning on this and now we\u2019re not going in that direction.\u00a0 It\u2019s not going to happen.\u201d\u00a0 Do you remember what you said to her?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kathie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I said, \u201cCome home!\u00a0 Come home and we\u2019ll take care of you.\u201d\u00a0 And she came home and for several days she just recovered.\u00a0 She slept. She didn\u2019t have to present herself to anybody but her family.\u00a0 I believe that the Lord allowed us to be a family to her and help her in the initial healing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I suspect we\u2019re talking to two groups of people. Generally, whether male or female, they fall into a category of rushing ahead, taking action, let\u2019s fix it, let\u2019s address the problem, let\u2019s move.\u00a0 That\u2019s me.\u00a0 I\u2019m guilty of that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWaiting is much more difficult for me.\u00a0 I\u2019m learning to wait and the problem with waiting is ambiguity.\u00a0 It\u2019s just not clear and so you\u2019re sitting there, waiting.\u00a0 As you said, Lisa, you don\u2019t have all the facts.\u00a0 You don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen.\u00a0 So you\u2019re faced with another situation like you were a few months later when you were thinking the young man that you had now met, that filled up the gaps in your heart and you\u2019re now freshly in love with, was going to ask you to marry him.\u00a0 You went over to his apartment and you know what you did.\u00a0 You did some snooping!\u00a0 Because it was back to the same issue, right Lisa?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, I love that you brought up this story.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes, I did.\u00a0 Guilty, definitely.\u00a0 I was anticipating becoming engaged.\u00a0 This was some time later, after the incident we just talked about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Different guy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 Different guy.\u00a0 I was totally in love with this guy and a lot of time had passed there.\u00a0 We felt like this was what we were supposed to do.\u00a0 So we had talked about getting married.\u00a0 I knew it was coming eventually but I am impatient.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted to find my engagement ring.\u00a0 I knew it was somewhere in his apartment but I had not yet seen it.\u00a0 He had picked it out himself.\u00a0 He bought it himself. That was a tough one for me as it was because, as a woman, we want to be able to control things like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But you especially.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 But me especially\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s one of the hardest things God has ever asked you to.\u00a0 You like to control things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m admitting it, full disclosure, absolutely.\u00a0 So it was tough.\u00a0 I wanted to find this ring and I was on my way to work.\u00a0 I worked as a make-up artist at the time.\u00a0 I had on this uniform that was kind of like a dress. I had on high heels but I wanted to find this ring.\u00a0 There was a box that really intriguing to me, on top of a shelf, over the washer and dryer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You thought you\u2019d found the ring!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 I thought I\u2019d found it.\u00a0 So I kind of hoisted myself up there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wait!\u00a0 Is this breaking and entering?\u00a0 Did you break into his apartment?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was away.\u00a0 He was in class!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was.\u00a0 He was taking a class at the time and I was at his apartment.\u00a0 He knew I was there.\u00a0 That was okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can you believe she did this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m not believing this!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, think about this.\u00a0 The guy saved his hard-earned cash to surprise her\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you think you\u2019ve found it up above the dryer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think I\u2019ve found it.\u00a0 So I went to reach for the box that I was sure it was in and there was a large, like an oversized, cup that I remembered at the moment my to-be fianc\u00e9, told me that there were\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or hope to be fianc\u00e9!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 My hope to be.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \u2026That there was a cupful of his saved pennies in there.\u00a0 So I reach for the box and when I did my hand caught that cup and knocked those pennies over and they went spilling out absolutely everywhere.\u00a0 So of course then I\u2019m scrambling, trying to pick up the pennies and there were so many, it was impossible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Remove the evidence, really.\u00a0 That\u2019s what you were trying to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 And the way he discovered I had done this was he found a cluster of pennies behind one of those machines or beside one of those machines when he was doing some housecleaning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you didn\u2019t go and confess.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 I didn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it wasn\u2019t the ring up on top.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 And the ring was not there.\u00a0 But I reminded me, when I was writing the book, it made me think about how often we try to \u201cfacilitate\u201d things in our life that we are impatient to wait for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Facilitate!\u00a0 That\u2019s a nice word.\u00a0 How we try to facilitate!\u00a0 How we try to control is what you\u2019re saying!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to go to the moment when he confronted you with the pennies.\u00a0 What did he say to you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, that was funny.\u00a0 He discovered the pennies and he knew that the way they had come to be in that place would have had to be because I had tried to find the ring.\u00a0 He knew I was snooping!\u00a0 This was not any surprise to him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He knew what he was getting when he married you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 He did.\u00a0 He will laugh when he hears this because I\u2019m very much the same now.\u00a0 It reminded me of how much we do scramble to try to facilitate, hurrying up God with the things in our life.\u00a0 So when we do that we tend to make a mess many times.\u00a0 That\u2019s where the story is really applicable because of that thing we try to do to hurry up God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me go back to this principle we\u2019re talking about, when to step out in faith versus when to wait on the Lord, and knowing the difference.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKathie, Lisa and Dennis both talked about the ministry of the Holy Spirit and how we rely on the Holy Spirit\u2019s leadership and guidance in that situation.\u00a0 But I think a lot of our listeners would go, \u201cBut I\u2019m still not sure.\u00a0 I mean, I pray and I ask the Lord to direct my steps and I\u2019m still don\u2019t know whether I\u2019m being timid or whether I\u2019m being too aggressive.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIs there a way you\u2019ve learned over a lifetime to, I hate to put it this way, but to know when to hold \u2018em and know when to fold \u2018em.?\u00a0 Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kathie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m still learning for sure.\u00a0 I do feel, what has already been said, that God\u2019s timing is a key in His will.\u00a0 That\u2019s one thing I have learned over the years.\u00a0 His timing is a really big factor.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that we need to hold on to verses and there are so many verses like this.\u00a0 But the verse that He will guide us, He will guide us with His eye.\u00a0 He will guide us.\u00a0 So we need to believe first that He\u2019s going to guide us.\u00a0 That He may give us broad parameters to make the choice, or they may be more narrow but He will guide so.\u00a0 So when we have nailed that down I think then, under the leadership of the Holy Spirit, we need to watch for indicators because they will be there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re hitting on a key point here.\u00a0 Let\u2019s just say for the sake of an illustration, that a women came to me, not my wife, but a women came to me for advice about what to do in a relational situation that really needed to be fixed.\u00a0 I knew something that she didn\u2019t know about the other person.\u00a0 She\u2019s wanting to press the issue.\u00a0 She\u2019s wanting to get it fixed now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYet I know what\u2019s going on in the other woman\u2019s life.\u00a0 It would simply not be the right time in any regard to have a confrontation or a meeting or a discussion or putting things on top of the table.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod does know and that\u2019s why, for that person who wants to rush ahead, they have to seek the heart and mind of God.\u00a0 I know, because both Bob and I have confessed.\u00a0 I guess we\u2019re all admitting that we\u2019re run ahead type of people her.\u00a0 That type of personality really needs to step back, double pray, take a few moments to seek God\u2019s mind, and wait.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you tend to be a \u201cwaiter,\u201d one who just waits and waits and never takes action, what would you say to that person?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s the person that need to proceed sometimes in the things that life brings to them.\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\u00a0 Those people need to step out in faith a little more often.\u00a0 It does depend on personality a lot.\u00a0 So that\u2019s why those two things within this chapter really go together because we all have to proceed sometimes.\u00a0 We all have to wait sometimes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut for the person who it\u2019s a little bit easier for them to wait, proceeding is a hard one for them.\u00a0 So they need to know that there are times they\u2019ve got to step forward, step out, press on, proceed on.\u00a0 That\u2019s very, very important because you can spend your whole life waiting out of fear and that\u2019s not the kind of waiting that God requires of us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kathie, so often when somebody is waiting, fear is what\u2019s at the core of that, isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kathie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh yes, absolutely.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a good feeling, especially for a woman. We like security.\u00a0 To not have obvious security that we can touch and know about and know where the money\u2019s coming from and all those particulars in a practical sense is frightening. especially if somebody has some baggage from their past where they\u2019re more insecure because their needs were not met.\u00a0 Then that\u2019s a special need that they have.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I feel like God customizes His will for us.\u00a0 And so, as a result, Corrie ten Boom has a quote that goes this way that God places people in our lives for the future that He can only see.\u00a0 This is the advantage of being older.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWith longevity you have the opportunity to look back and see people we\u2019ve met, that looked like they were just a part of normal life, but they were divinely paced there.\u00a0 Later on, they resurface or we meet somebody.\u00a0 It all weaves together and that\u2019s because He customizes His plan for our lives.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to wait on Him to let the timing all work out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know this.\u00a0 Whether you struggle with waiting or you struggle with moving ahead too quickly, I think it\u2019s going to always involve two or three things.\u00a0 Let me just share these quickly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber one, I think it\u2019s always going to involve faith.\u00a0 Whether you are a person who struggles with waiting, it involves faith to know when to step out.\u00a0 Or whether you\u2019re\u2019 somebody who rushes ahead, it\u2019s faith to be able to wait.\u00a0 Without faith it is impossible to please God, Hebrews chapter 11.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Secondly, it will demand courage.\u00a0 It takes courage to wait sometimes and it takes courage for someone who likes to wait or finds comfort in the waiting, to be able to step out.\u00a0 Courage means, as we\u2019ve talked about here, facing your fear and stepping out and perhaps confronting a situation or taking that step of faith that really flies in the face of your circumstances.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen third, it will never be contrary to scripture.\u00a0 God calls us to obey the Bible and He always calls us to live our lives in concert with the written Word of God that guides us and directs us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know a lot of people who are in marriage relationships who find a lot of discomfort that things aren\u2019t going the way they want it to go.\u00a0 So they can rationalize that God wants me to be happy.\u00a0 God wants me out of this relationship.\u00a0 He wants me out of this unhappiness.\u00a0 I want out and I\u2019m tired of waiting.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been waiting for years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYet the Scripture really calls us, I believe, back to our covenant, back to what we promised God.\u00a0 In many of those situations I think people rush too quickly for a solution that is not a solution at all.\u00a0 It is an exchange of problems.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhether you tend to be one who waits too long or rushes ahead too fast, maybe it\u2019s time to take a deep breath and just cry out to God.\u00a0 Say, \u201cGod would you by your Holy Spirit, lead me, direct me, and show me the way I should go and when I should go.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to thank both of your ladies for your work on this book.\u00a0 I think <em>The Seven Hardest Things God Asks a Woman to Do<\/em> is really insightful to really peel away the heart of a woman and to show a women where her struggles can be and, in most cases, are and then to give them godly advice about how to handle it.\u00a0 Thanks for being on the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa and Kathie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I can see this book being used by a lot of ladies in study groups, whether it\u2019s a small group that meets in your home or something you do, maybe a ladies study in the church.\u00a0 I can see this provoking a lot of conversation because I think, like you said Dennis, this taps into where ladies are today.\u00a0 <em>The Seven Hardest Things God Asks a Woman to Do.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>We\u2019ve got copies of the book in our FamilyLife Today Resource Center.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you want to go online at FamilyLifeToday. died, then was buried, then was resurrected, and forty days later ascended into heaven.\u00a0 But as He left He sent the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 He sent the Holy Spirit to guide us into truth, to teach us, to comfort us, and in situations like this, Bob, I know this sounds a bit mysterious, and it is, but He relates to us as a person guiding us, when to step out and when to wait, when to just pause.\u00a0 Not necessarily run ahead of God but wait for Him to act.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s not an equation.\u00a0 This life is not a two plus two equals four.\u00a0 It\u2019s about us as His creatures and his Creation, relating to Him, get to know His heart, get to know His Word.\u00a0 His will is always revealed in Scripture. To put all of that in balance and live that out in a dynamic relationship with God, where we\u2019re going to fail numerous times, but the promise is He will never leave us nor forsake us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve got some guests who are with us today who are going to help us understand that paradox of stepping out and waiting on the Lord and how to understand when and how and all of that, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We do.\u00a0 A mother\/daughter combo.\u00a0 We get two for the price of one here.\u00a0 Kathie Reimer and Lisa Whittle join us on FamilyLife Today.\u00a0 Kathy, Lisa, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kathie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s great to be here.\u00a0 Yes it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Lisa is an author, speaker, wife, mother of three, and as I mentioned, Kathie\u2019s daughter.\u00a0 Where do you fit in, Lisa?\u00a0 There are two others.\u00a0 Are you the oldest, youngest, or middle?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m the middle but I was the baby for twelve years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> So you milked it, in other words.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 I am all confused in the birth order but I actually operate more as a first born.\u00a0 So what in the world?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you have anything to add to that, Kathie?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kathie:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I think she\u2019s right!\u00a0 Well, and she was the only girl. I feel like all our children are only children.\u00a0 And I think that\u2019s the way God looks at us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How about that!\u00a0 Well, Kathie is an author and educator.\u00a0 Together they\u2019ve written a book called <em>The Seven Hardest Things God Asks a Woman to Do<\/em>.\u00a0 Lisa, there\u2019s a story you tell in the book that\u2019s a great illustration of one of these hard things that God calls a women to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s this \u201cdo I wait on the Lord or do I step out in faith\u201d issue that we\u2019re talking about, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 I loved the way that Dennis said that and set me up perfectly for this chapter four.\u00a0 It really is this dependency on the Holy Spirit. Sometimes we don\u2019t like to hear that because we are better at proceeding, I think, than waiting.\u00a0 But both of them are difficult sometimes.\u00a0 To step out and do things when we\u2019re timid particularly when life doesn\u2019t work out the way we want it to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Which is where you found yourself in, what was it, 1993?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s exactly where I found myself.\u00a0 I was a college student.\u00a0 I had been engaged.\u00a0 I had a long relationship with someone that I loved and cared deeply for.\u00a0 As many relationships do, it didn\u2019t work out.\u00a0 We broke up.\u00a0 I was at a point in my life where I went home to be with my parents and to kind of recover, to just be alone and spend time with God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was at a point where I felt that God was drawing me to then proceed and to do something else.\u00a0 I was afraid.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know anyone in this particular place I was going.\u00a0 I was going to go to graduate school.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t have a lot of information and that\u2019s one of the things that\u2019s hard for us.\u00a0 When we don\u2019t have the information in front of us and yet we feel drawn by the Holy Spirit to do something that we know is something that He wants us to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI went to graduate school about two months after the breakup and had no idea what was in store for me.\u00a0 But that is the place where I met my very best girlfriend who is really more like a sister to me to this day.\u00a0 We\u2019ve journeyed through many difficult things together and it is where I met my future husband.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I know I was prompted to God to make that choice and to step out and do that.\u00a0 I was afraid but I knew that was something He wanted me to do.\u00a0 And that\u2019s an example of proceeding without all the information. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were at a hard spot because I don\u2019t know how long, in college, you had been pointed in one direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When did you get engaged?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 I got engaged in the middle of my college experience and I had been engaged for about a year when we broke up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019d been dating for three years, you\u2019d been engaged for a year, you\u2019re aiming right at \u201cI know where the future is and I\u2019m going there.\u201d\u00a0 And then all of a sudden it blows up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You pull back and go, \u201cNow what?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 I think a lot of us find ourselves in those positions where we map out the way that we think life is going to go.\u00a0 Or even life is kind of leading us in a certain direction so we go with it.\u00a0 I think when those moments happen where life is altered in some way, maybe by a choice we make, maybe by a choice we didn\u2019t have a voice in at all, we find ourselves in this place where we really do have to make decisions based on the prompting of the Holy Spirit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kathie, do you remember the phone call you got from your daughter from college?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kathie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do, like yesterday.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I do remember.\u00a0 I remember the hurt and the difficulty in waiting and taking a step based on the best knowledge she had at the time, trusting in God, that He was going to lead her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you remember how you counseled her when she says, \u201cMom, I\u2019ve been planning on this and now we\u2019re not going in that direction.\u00a0 It\u2019s not going to happen.\u201d\u00a0 Do you remember what you said to her?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kathie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I said, \u201cCome home!\u00a0 Come home and we\u2019ll take care of you.\u201d\u00a0 And she came home and for several days she just recovered.\u00a0 She slept. She didn\u2019t have to present herself to anybody but her family.\u00a0 I believe that the Lord allowed us to be a family to her and help her in the initial healing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I suspect we\u2019re talking to two groups of people. Generally, whether male or female, they fall into a category of rushing ahead, taking action, let\u2019s fix it, let\u2019s address the problem, let\u2019s move.\u00a0 That\u2019s me.\u00a0 I\u2019m guilty of that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWaiting is much more difficult for me.\u00a0 I\u2019m learning to wait and the problem with waiting is ambiguity.\u00a0 It\u2019s just not clear and so you\u2019re sitting there, waiting.\u00a0 As you said, Lisa, you don\u2019t have all the facts.\u00a0 You don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen.\u00a0 So you\u2019re faced with another situation like you were a few months later when you were thinking the young man that you had now met, that filled up the gaps in your heart and you\u2019re now freshly in love with, was going to ask you to marry him.\u00a0 You went over to his apartment and you know what you did.\u00a0 You did some snooping!\u00a0 Because it was back to the same issue, right Lisa?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, I love that you brought up this story.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes, I did.\u00a0 Guilty, definitely.\u00a0 I was anticipating becoming engaged.\u00a0 This was some time later, after the incident we just talked about it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Different guy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 Different guy.\u00a0 I was totally in love with this guy and a lot of time had passed there.\u00a0 We felt like this was what we were supposed to do.\u00a0 So we had talked about getting married.\u00a0 I knew it was coming eventually but I am impatient.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI wanted to find my engagement ring.\u00a0 I knew it was somewhere in his apartment but I had not yet seen it.\u00a0 He had picked it out himself.\u00a0 He bought it himself. That was a tough one for me as it was because, as a woman, we want to be able to control things like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But you especially.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 But me especially\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> It\u2019s one of the hardest things God has ever asked you to.\u00a0 You like to control things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m admitting it, full disclosure, absolutely.\u00a0 So it was tough.\u00a0 I wanted to find this ring and I was on my way to work.\u00a0 I worked as a make-up artist at the time.\u00a0 I had on this uniform that was kind of like a dress. I had on high heels but I wanted to find this ring.\u00a0 There was a box that really intriguing to me, on top of a shelf, over the washer and dryer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You thought you\u2019d found the ring!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 I thought I\u2019d found it.\u00a0 So I kind of hoisted myself up there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wait!\u00a0 Is this breaking and entering?\u00a0 Did you break into his apartment?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was away.\u00a0 He was in class!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was.\u00a0 He was taking a class at the time and I was at his apartment.\u00a0 He knew I was there.\u00a0 That was okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can you believe she did this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m not believing this!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, think about this.\u00a0 The guy saved his hard-earned cash to surprise her\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you think you\u2019ve found it up above the dryer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think I\u2019ve found it.\u00a0 So I went to reach for the box that I was sure it was in and there was a large, like an oversized, cup that I remembered at the moment my to-be fianc\u00e9, told me that there were\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or hope to be fianc\u00e9!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 My hope to be.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \u2026That there was a cupful of his saved pennies in there.\u00a0 So I reach for the box and when I did my hand caught that cup and knocked those pennies over and they went spilling out absolutely everywhere.\u00a0 So of course then I\u2019m scrambling, trying to pick up the pennies and there were so many, it was impossible.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Remove the evidence, really.\u00a0 That\u2019s what you were trying to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 And the way he discovered I had done this was he found a cluster of pennies behind one of those machines or beside one of those machines when he was doing some housecleaning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you didn\u2019t go and confess.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 I didn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it wasn\u2019t the ring up on top.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 And the ring was not there.\u00a0 But I reminded me, when I was writing the book, it made me think about how often we try to \u201cfacilitate\u201d things in our life that we are impatient to wait for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Facilitate!\u00a0 That\u2019s a nice word.\u00a0 How we try to facilitate!\u00a0 How we try to control is what you\u2019re saying!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to go to the moment when he confronted you with the pennies.\u00a0 What did he say to you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, that was funny.\u00a0 He discovered the pennies and he knew that the way they had come to be in that place would have had to be because I had tried to find the ring.\u00a0 He knew I was snooping!\u00a0 This was not any surprise to him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He knew what he was getting when he married you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 He did.\u00a0 He will laugh when he hears this because I\u2019m very much the same now.\u00a0 It reminded me of how much we do scramble to try to facilitate, hurrying up God with the things in our life.\u00a0 So when we do that we tend to make a mess many times.\u00a0 That\u2019s where the story is really applicable because of that thing we try to do to hurry up God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me go back to this principle we\u2019re talking about, when to step out in faith versus when to wait on the Lord, and knowing the difference.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKathie, Lisa and Dennis both talked about the ministry of the Holy Spirit and how we rely on the Holy Spirit\u2019s leadership and guidance in that situation.\u00a0 But I think a lot of our listeners would go, \u201cBut I\u2019m still not sure.\u00a0 I mean, I pray and I ask the Lord to direct my steps and I\u2019m still don\u2019t know whether I\u2019m being timid or whether I\u2019m being too aggressive.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIs there a way you\u2019ve learned over a lifetime to, I hate to put it this way, but to know when to hold \u2018em and know when to fold \u2018em.?\u00a0 Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kathie:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m still learning for sure.\u00a0 I do feel, what has already been said, that God\u2019s timing is a key in His will.\u00a0 That\u2019s one thing I have learned over the years.\u00a0 His timing is a really big factor.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that we need to hold on to verses and there are so many verses like this.\u00a0 But the verse that He will guide us, He will guide us with His eye.\u00a0 He will guide us.\u00a0 So we need to believe first that He\u2019s going to guide us.\u00a0 That He may give us broad parameters to make the choice, or they may be more narrow but He will guide so.\u00a0 So when we have nailed that down I think then, under the leadership of the Holy Spirit, we need to watch for indicators because they will be there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re hitting on a key point here.\u00a0 Let\u2019s just say for the sake of an illustration, that a women came to me, not my wife, but a women came to me for advice about what to do in a relational situation that really needed to be fixed.\u00a0 I knew something that she didn\u2019t know about the other person.\u00a0 She\u2019s wanting to press the issue.\u00a0 She\u2019s wanting to get it fixed now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYet I know what\u2019s going on in the other woman\u2019s life.\u00a0 It would simply not be the right time in any regard to have a confrontation or a meeting or a discussion or putting things on top of the table.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGod does know and that\u2019s why, for that person who wants to rush ahead, they have to seek the heart and mind of God.\u00a0 I know, because both Bob and I have confessed.\u00a0 I guess we\u2019re all admitting that we\u2019re run ahead type of people her.\u00a0 That type of personality really needs to step back, double pray, take a few moments to seek God\u2019s mind, and wait.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you tend to be a \u201cwaiter,\u201d one who just waits and waits and never takes action, what would you say to that person?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s the person that need to proceed sometimes in the things that life brings to them.\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\u00a0 Those people need to step out in faith a little more often.\u00a0 It does depend on personality a lot.\u00a0 So that\u2019s why those two things within this chapter really go together because we all have to proceed sometimes.\u00a0 We all have to wait sometimes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut for the person who it\u2019s a little bit easier for them to wait, proceeding is a hard one for them.\u00a0 So they need to know that there are times they\u2019ve got to step forward, step out, press on, proceed on.\u00a0 That\u2019s very, very important because you can spend your whole life waiting out of fear and that\u2019s not the kind of waiting that God requires of us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kathie, so often when somebody is waiting, fear is what\u2019s at the core of that, isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kathie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh yes, absolutely.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a good feeling, especially for a woman. We like security.\u00a0 To not have obvious security that we can touch and know about and know where the money\u2019s coming from and all those particulars in a practical sense is frightening. especially if somebody has some baggage from their past where they\u2019re more insecure because their needs were not met.\u00a0 Then that\u2019s a special need that they have.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I feel like God customizes His will for us.\u00a0 And so, as a result, Corrie ten Boom has a quote that goes this way that God places people in our lives for the future that He can only see.\u00a0 This is the advantage of being older.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWith longevity you have the opportunity to look back and see people we\u2019ve met, that looked like they were just a part of normal life, but they were divinely paced there.\u00a0 Later on, they resurface or we meet somebody.\u00a0 It all weaves together and that\u2019s because He customizes His plan for our lives.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to wait on Him to let the timing all work out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know this.\u00a0 Whether you struggle with waiting or you struggle with moving ahead too quickly, I think it\u2019s going to always involve two or three things.\u00a0 Let me just share these quickly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNumber one, I think it\u2019s always going to involve faith.\u00a0 Whether you are a person who struggles with waiting, it involves faith to know when to step out.\u00a0 Or whether you\u2019re\u2019 somebody who rushes ahead, it\u2019s faith to be able to wait.\u00a0 Without faith it is impossible to please God, Hebrews chapter 11.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Secondly, it will demand courage.\u00a0 It takes courage to wait sometimes and it takes courage for someone who likes to wait or finds comfort in the waiting, to be able to step out.\u00a0 Courage means, as we\u2019ve talked about here, facing your fear and stepping out and perhaps confronting a situation or taking that step of faith that really flies in the face of your circumstances.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen third, it will never be contrary to scripture.\u00a0 God calls us to obey the Bible and He always calls us to live our lives in concert with the written Word of God that guides us and directs us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know a lot of people who are in marriage relationships who find a lot of discomfort that things aren\u2019t going the way they want it to go.\u00a0 So they can rationalize that God wants me to be happy.\u00a0 God wants me out of this relationship.\u00a0 He wants me out of this unhappiness.\u00a0 I want out and I\u2019m tired of waiting.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been waiting for years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYet the Scripture really calls us, I believe, back to our covenant, back to what we promised God.\u00a0 In many of those situations I think people rush too quickly for a solution that is not a solution at all.\u00a0 It is an exchange of problems.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhether you tend to be one who waits too long or rushes ahead too fast, maybe it\u2019s time to take a deep breath and just cry out to God.\u00a0 Say, \u201cGod would you by your Holy Spirit, lead me, direct me, and show me the way I should go and when I should go.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to thank both of your ladies for your work on this book.\u00a0 I think <em>The Seven Hardest Things God Asks a Woman to Do<\/em> is really insightful to really peel away the heart of a woman and to show a women where her struggles can be and, in most cases, are and then to give them godly advice about how to handle it.\u00a0 Thanks for being on the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Lisa and Kathie:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I can see this book being used by a lot of ladies in study groups, whether it\u2019s a small group that meets in your home or something you do, maybe a ladies study in the church.\u00a0 I can see this provoking a lot of conversation because I think, like you said Dennis, this taps into where ladies are today.\u00a0 <em>The Seven Hardest Things God Asks a Woman to Do.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>We\u2019ve got copies of the book in our FamilyLife Today Resource Center.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you want to go online at FamilyLifeToday.
