When their children reach a certain age, Jim and Jerolyn Bogear take their kids on what they refer to as a rite of passage trip.\u00a0 It\u2019s a combination of serious business and some serious fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well don\u2019t we all like to get away?\u00a0 We oftentimes do retreats, and it helps our people think and dream and talk.\u00a0 So I think out of that normal \u201cDad\u2019s going to sit down and talk to me while we\u2019re sitting on the couch\u201d and there\u2019s a hundred other distractions or things going on in life, this is a focused attempt.\u00a0 And like we said, it\u2019s a rite of passage trip.\u00a0 It\u2019s a handing of the baton of these values that we\u2019ve been trying to live out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLifeToday<\/em> for Friday, April 29<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife\u00ae, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We\u2019ll talk today to a mom and dad who have found a creative way to pass on a legacy of faith to their children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I\u2019m kind of wondering if parents are listening to our program today and they\u2019ve got younger kids, should they have the younger kids continue to listen?\u00a0 I\u2019m just afraid the kids are going to go, \u201cHey, I want to go on some nice vacation with Dad here in a couple of years.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, maybe what the parents need to do is send the children off in a corner with a map of the United States, and just let them think about \u201cWhere would you like to go?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah.\u00a0 Just cut off Alaska and Hawaii because they might get big ideas if you leave those on the map.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 No doubt about it.\u00a0 We heard earlier about Jim Bogear\u2019s wonderful adventure to New York City with his daughter, Lauren.\u00a0 He joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> along with his wife, Jerolyn.\u00a0 Welcome back to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jim is a pastor, Jerolyn is a school teacher, and they live in Sacramento, California.\u00a0 They have three children, and they\u2019ve written a book called <em>Faith Legacy.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>We mentioned earlier how you have six values that you guys have hammered out as a couple.\u00a0 Now you said, Jim, these came from a sermon series, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, Jerolyn mentioned that, that we preached on this, but we had already laid the values out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was going to ask if you\u2019d gone to the Vice President here of the Bogear family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What was your part in hammering out these values that he ended up preaching on, but you both ended up passing on to your children?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think in working out exactly how we were going to do that.\u00a0 What were the steps we\u2019d take in getting these values to our children, how do we practically make it a part of our lives?\u00a0 And then also, analyzing how are we modeling these values for our children?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe talk about that a lot in the book.\u00a0 You were talking earlier about a bridge \u2013 that you have a bridge of a relationship to your children.\u00a0 And that is part of the bridge \u2013 that we had already been living out these values for our children, not perfectly, but we\u2019d been trying, and they\u2019d been seeing that.\u00a0 And in doing so, we were asking them, \u201cWe want you to live out these values as well.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now you guys don\u2019t know this, but Barbara and I early in our marriage after we\u2019d had two or three children had a getaway and we just did a little exercise where we attempted to hammer out what were, and what became the core values of our family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to tell you that what you have talked about in this book we have experienced.\u00a0 Now we don\u2019t have the same six that you have, but we hammered out five, and just the fact that Barbara and I agreed upon our five core values in advance \u2013 it settled a lot of issues as we raised our children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You didn\u2019t agree at the beginning of that retreat.\u00a0 You had different values going into the retreat, didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, actually what we did was she wrote a list of her top ten values and ranked them, I wrote a list of my top ten values and I ranked them.\u00a0 And then we got together and argued.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\u00a0 I mean, excuse me, hammered out and prayerfully considered . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Discussed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Discussed, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, there you go.\u00a0 Spiritually considered our values.\u00a0 Now, we did, we talked about them, and there was give and take.\u00a0 There were some on my list that didn\u2019t make the top five and some on hers that didn\u2019t make our top five and we consolidated others.\u00a0 But just the discipline that you had in your family to come up with these six probably settled a lot of arguments between you two as a couple and with your children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you come up with these six by getting away for a weekend and talking about it, do you remember the process by which the six emerged in your thinking?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019re looking at each other like \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have no idea where these six came from \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know where these came from.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do know we didn\u2019t take a weekend away to plan this.\u00a0 We began to talk about them.\u00a0 Because, again, as Jerolyn said, we were trying to live these out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe hadn\u2019t necessarily put names with some of those, because, like one of the values, integrity, we really wanted a person who was a person of integrity to have a good work ethic.\u00a0 Well, that was something that we were raised with, we understood, but we began to put honesty and truth-telling and work ethic, so maybe it\u2019s a blend of some of those that we felt like we gave a name integrity and what that looks like to it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Would you have these conversations around the table after dinner, or going to bed?\u00a0 I\u2019m just wondering where you found the time and how the conversation \u2013 Did you say, \u201cHey, let\u2019s talk about our values again tonight,\u201d or how did you do it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was just living life, you know, what is this that we\u2019re living out for our children?\u00a0 What are we going to call this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 We realized, as I said earlier, we put a name with it, the value that we were trying to instill.\u00a0 So, yes, in general living life and having conversations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then at some point you said, \u201cLet\u2019s drive this home through these legacy trips\u201d that you took your kids on.\u00a0 You took your oldest daughter to New York.\u00a0 When it came time for your second child \u2013 is that a son or a daughter?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 A son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He didn\u2019t want to go to New York, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Where did he want to go?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 We ended up in Pebble Beach.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And so did Jerolyn get to go with him to Pebble Beach because you got to go to New York City with your daughter?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Great question.\u00a0 A wonderful question.\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And was Jerolyn in agreement with that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Were you in agreement with that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was in agreement.\u00a0 It was the New York City one I wanted to go to more.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was still being a mom at home, I was holding down the fort.\u00a0 But we also \u2013 you know we keep talking about the different trips, and there are so many different ways, and especially in this economy now, you know.\u00a0 \u201cHow can we do this?\u00a0 We can\u2019t afford a trip to New York City,\u201d and probably today we couldn\u2019t afford a trip to New York City either.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you can take day trips, take six Saturdays in a row and spend it with your child, doing something that they enjoy doing, get into their world, and then discuss each of the values.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m convinced right now there are listeners who are going, \u201cOkay, you\u2019ve baited us long enough. What are the six values, and how do you teach them in terms of what is the object lesson you give your children on this legacy trip to drive home the point?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, as Jim said before, the first value is devotion, loving the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.\u00a0 We have Peter as being our biblical example, we have the gift of the key, and we have the question.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe drive it home with the way they\u2019ve been raised, in that we\u2019ve been raising them with biblical values, Christ-like values, that we have been taking them to church, that we have been showing them how to read the Bible and discussing the Bible with them.\u00a0 And then at the end of each chapter we have age-appropriate activities that you can do with your children to drive home the point of each of the values.\u00a0 But devotion is the first one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, for example, what kind of an activity would you do around devotion?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we have it broken down in ages \u2013 between ages six and ten or eleven, you could start teaching them to have TAWG time, time alone with God, where they literally spend some time alone and you set the parameters for what that is:\u00a0 they are in a room alone, they are having prayer time or they can have Christian music playing, or they can be reading a book, or whatever \u2013 as long as they are learning to be alone with themselves, for one, and with the Lord at the same time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Integrity is the second value that we talk about in the book, and the gift that we give is a mirror, and we also talk about \u201cHow is the mirror looking?\u201d as the question.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now do you give an actual mirror?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes we do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How big of a mirror?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 It depends on the size and style.\u00a0 We try to find it appropriate for a girl or a boy.\u00a0 Nothing huge.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Guys never look in mirrors \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So why give a guy a mirror?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A little pocket mirror \u2013 that\u2019s all you need, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because we want them to look and see themselves, identifying their identity in Christ, and we want them to look at that image that they are becoming more and more Christ-like. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who\u2019s your biblical character for integrity?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 David.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well he had some lapses in integrity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely, and we talk about that.\u00a0 Just like we don\u2019t have it perfect as parents, we mess up all the time, David was too, but it was said of him that he was one who was \u201cafter God\u2019s own heart.\u201d\u00a0 We look at his life, and we look at that, the biblical example, and we also admit that David failed.\u00a0 David messed up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As we think about integrity we could think about right and wrong choices, but as I heard you guys discussing it earlier, you mentioned work ethic falls under this topic.\u00a0 That was one of Barbara\u2019s core values, so she would really buy in to your definition of integrity, teaching your children what a full day\u2019s work was and to do things right the first time.\u00a0 She\u2019s big on that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re exactly right, and we really want this good work ethic.\u00a0 We don\u2019t want people to say you\u2019re lazy.\u00a0 What kind of representation is that of Christ and following him as a Christ-follower?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI stopped at one of our son\u2019s place of employment when he was working in high school and I said to the manager that had hired him.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI\u2019ve got a question.\u201d\u00a0 We stepped outside; our son wasn\u2019t there, Shay, and I said, \u201cHow\u2019s he doing, because we have a value of integrity?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe stopped me and said, \u201cSir, we have a value of integrity in this company, and he is doing well.\u00a0 He is working hard; he is going above and beyond.\u201d\u00a0 I thought that was interesting that here it is, somebody noticing that he was working hard and fulfilling that integrity.\u00a0 I thought it was a neat story for us as a parent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It never hurts to inspect what you expect.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, you\u2019ve got devotion, integrity.\u00a0 What\u2019s the third one?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 The third one is purity, and with purity we give them a purity ring.\u00a0 Some can choose some of the rings you find in Christian stores.\u00a0 We let them choose the style they wanted, and they will wear that until they get married, until they replace it with their wedding band.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe biblical character is Joseph for that, because he was the man who ran from temptation, and to show that it can be done, that this is a lifestyle that you can live and your marriage will be stronger for waiting.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo that\u2019s what we do for purity.\u00a0 And the question is, \u201cWhat\u2019s on your hand?\u201d\u00a0 You know, before they go on a date, although we encourage group dating, but when they can start dating, \u201cWhat\u2019s on your hand?\u201d just to remind them of that commitment they\u2019ve made to purity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And do you define purity for them, because in this culture, I mean, peers are defining morality and how far you go, and hooking up . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Uh-huh.\u00a0 Your version of purity may not match my version of purity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes \u2013 and then on the legacy trip, my son and I had some great discussions about that specifically, from man to man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, you had to talk about pornography; you had to talk about all kinds of issues, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Absolutely, and explaining some terms to help make sure he understood what may be said in the locker room.\u00a0 He played some sports, and those kinds of things, just to be very honest and open of what\u2019s in our brain, what\u2019s in our mind, the whole eye-gate and the ear-gate, what we allow to come in, so absolutely.\u00a0 Yes, we tried to define that very clear of purity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, there\u2019s a dad who is listening to you, Jim, and he\u2019s going, \u201cYou\u2019re the pastor, you know how to say these things.\u00a0 You\u2019re polished, you\u2019re a professional.\u201d\u00a0 How do you talk to a 16-year-old boy about pornography?\u00a0 I\u2019ll set him across the table from you; what do you say to your son about pornography and about purity?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 First we talk about the value and the respect of a woman.\u00a0 We begin to talk about what this means.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing.\u00a0 You can be a great communicator, and you two are \u2013 how do you come across that table to your son?\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing the words that don\u2019t come out of your mouth.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGuys, you don\u2019t have to be perfect in this.\u00a0 They may already know more than you think they know, or at least more than you know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your hands are clammy even now, even talking about it, aren\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 So don\u2019t think that just because you\u2019re \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s okay to be scared, isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 It\u2019s just like you said earlier.\u00a0 We\u2019re not perfect.\u00a0 It is nerve-wracking.\u00a0 We\u2019re oftentimes maybe more nervous than the child in this process.\u00a0 Their eyes and ears are open, listening to what you say, so we want to make sure we say it as best we can.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So do you ask him point-blank if he\u2019s looked at any stuff with buddies on the internet or in magazines or in movies?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and we\u2019ve tried to ask about that point-blank, about that direct.\u00a0 They know that we have access to their computer, to their passwords, and we\u2019ve set that up for protection from them so we can look and check that as well.\u00a0 Some people may think it\u2019s an invasion of privacy; we don\u2019t.\u00a0 We think it\u2019s being very good parents, and so we do ask them very directly those kind of questions, and we\u2019ve had some pretty open and honest conversations.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJerolyn does a wonderful job of asking questions, and we\u2019ve had some great dinner conversations or after-dinner conversations.\u00a0 In the busyness of our schedule, somebody will say, \u201cWell, how do you have those?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe make time for those; we do our best to do that, even if we\u2019re grabbing dinner on the fly, on the run, we come home, we still try to find those times to ask those questions and to be open and honest with them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we also are open and honest with ours.\u00a0 They have access; if they want to look at Dad\u2019s laptop, here it is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And if you ask the hard question, I think you have to be ready to deliver a gentle grace and a gentle forgiveness if they fail.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just to let them know that no matter what they share, no matter how shocked you might be, you\u2019re going to love them, you\u2019re going to be there for them, you\u2019re going to keep believing in them, and that you\u2019re a safe person for them to be real with and for them to fail with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 And we\u2019ve had some honest answers in a variety of the values, and we trust that we\u2019ve done a good job of extending grace and love, because we\u2019ve also been there in different areas of struggle.\u00a0 I would say to parents, \u201cDads, you may have to honestly confess some things.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou may have to be willing to share and grow through that and say, \u2018Hey, I haven\u2019t been perfect in this area,\u2019 not just purity, but whatever it may be.\u00a0 Maybe I cut some things off at work, or maybe I didn\u2019t have a good attitude, or maybe my anger really flared up, and I have to ask for forgiveness and I have to be honest and vulnerable about the struggles that I have.\u201d\u00a0 And that\u2019s risky, but it\u2019s really fair and it\u2019s best.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You mentioned a good attitude.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the six, right?\u00a0 Having a good attitude.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, the fourth one is positive attitude.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And Mom put that on the list and said, \u201cYou better talk to them about this while they\u2019re on that trip.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I like that value.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019d better come home with a good attitude.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s going to be in all capital letters at our house, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 We often joke \u2013 even if it kills us, you\u2019re going to have a positive attitude!\u00a0 We joke with our kids because we believe in that so much.\u00a0 A positive attitude \u2013 and the gift we give is an eagle, and we simply ask the question, \u201cHow high will you fly?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve often heard from others, attitude determines your altitude.\u00a0 Where are you going to go in life, and we believe that is so important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 We chose Paul as the biblical representative of that.\u00a0 We said, \u201cWho else can you pick besides Paul?\u201d\u00a0 You know, they flog him, they try to kill him, they put him in prison.\u00a0 He says, \u201cYea, put me in prison.\u00a0 I can tell people here about Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 And then they let him go.\u00a0 \u201cYea, thanks for letting me go.\u201d\u00a0 And then they say, \u201cWell, we\u2019re going to kill you.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cPlease kill me, then I can go and be with the Lord in heaven.\u201d\u00a0 You can\u2019t have a positive attitude better than that, so . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well he said, \u201cI\u2019ve learned the secret of being content in all things.\u00a0 I\u2019ve had plenty and I\u2019ve had want.\u00a0 It\u2019s fine.\u00a0 I\u2019ve learned how to be content; I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.\u201d\u00a0 So that\u2019s a great representation of a good attitude.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now do they put the eagle in their room?\u00a0 Is there a cage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not a real eagle.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, sorry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What\u2019s the fifth value?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Generosity, and we actually gave them a silver dollar in the year they were born, and we just ask them, \u201cWhat are you doing with what you hold?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis idea of we really want generous people.\u00a0 We love and serve a God who is so incredibly generous that we want to do that.\u00a0 We actually talk about the biblical character is Barnabas, and really how he was generous in so much of his way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 And the generosity isn\u2019t just with your finances or your belongings, but also with your heart, with your service, with your time.\u00a0 We just happened to use the silver dollar as our gift.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Generosity is often-times equated with money, but we\u2019re talking about generous in your love, in your forgiveness of people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 In grace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that\u2019s where Barnabas, Son of Encouragement, he was the one who came alongside and was generous and supported the Apostle Paul.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, even when others didn\u2019t necessarily believe in him or were scared of Paul, Barnabas came alongside.\u00a0 You\u2019re right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And the last of the six?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 The last is significance, and we use Jesus as our biblical example there.\u00a0 It\u2019s really basically all about relationships.\u00a0 Our gift is framed pictures of family and friends, people who have been significant in your life, and how are you going to be significant in other people\u2019s lives?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If I called one of your kids today and said, \u201cWhat are the six values,\" would they be able to tick them off, do you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think so.\u00a0 I think eventually they would get through all six.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 I hope so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If not, you\u2019d send them to the refrigerator.\u00a0 They could just read them off the list there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or the wall.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do they have all these object lessons of these values still in their rooms today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Our son doesn\u2019t have them at college, but yes, our daughter took them all with her when she moved out of the house, and they\u2019re all in our son\u2019s room waiting for him in college, and our daughter has them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alright, I\u2019m going to ask a question that I know a ton of our listeners are asking right now.\u00a0 I\u2019m looking at the front of your book, and I noticed that your book is copyrighted.\u00a0 Now, there are a lot of listeners listening that are going, \u201cThose six values -- I\u2019d like to steal those six values.\u00a0 Those fit for our family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Integrity.\u00a0 Be honest.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Would you give our listeners, if they really like your six values, or maybe four of the six, would you give them permission to take those values?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 We would love that.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Absolutely, positively.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s why you wrote the book, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s why we wrote the book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 We felt like that.\u00a0 We had somebody read the book before it went to print, and we said, \u201cWell, maybe people have other values.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cOh, no. We think,\u201d and this was somebody who was a grandmother.\u00a0 \u201cWe think these are the six values, these are great, we want our children to instill in their grandchildren.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I\u2019d say to anybody who is listening:\u00a0 As a parent, whether you\u2019re almost done or if you\u2019re just getting started, what Jim and Jerolyn have modeled here is \u2013 if you don\u2019t like their six values, or you like three of them, take with permission their three values that you do like, and figure out two or three more that you as a couple can agree to.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRaise your children intentionally and embed these principles, these values in their souls because you know what?\u00a0 All of us are in the process of passing on out of this life, and we\u2019re passing it on to another generation.\u00a0 That\u2019s the title of your book: <em>Faith Legacy<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just appreciate you guys and appreciate you sharing your story with our listeners.\u00a0 I hope many of our listeners will also leave a legacy of faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Dennis, can I just say on that, I really appreciate that.\u00a0 We\u2019ve seen legacy around this with FamilyLife, and legacy is a big word for us.\u00a0 We can all leave an inheritance of something, when we talk about monetary, but we want to leave and live a life of legacy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just think it\u2019s so important; that word is so valued around our home that it really pictures for us the completion of this book \u2013 of now, handing it to them, and as they\u2019ve gone off to college or whatever we\u2019ve taken them and said, \u201cNow, begin to live and to leave your own legacy.\u00a0 Begin to follow that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut these aren\u2019t new values with us.\u00a0 How could we dare hang on to them?\u00a0 These are values that others have had and we\u2019ve just begun to give words to, so they\u2019re not even stealing.\u00a0 They are using what we\u2019ve taken from others, I\u2019m sure, as we\u2019ve learned around the way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want to find out here \u2013 a little reality check.\u00a0 You said you and Barbara got away for a weekend and came up with five values for your family, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I know this was a long, long time ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you still remember what the five are?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, well in general.\u00a0 They weren\u2019t words exactly like this, but first and foremost was love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, so these guys stole that one from you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They did.\u00a0 I think they got it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 You found us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think secondly is the greatest mission a person can be on in their lives, and that\u2019s the Great Commission, be a part of proclaiming the Gospel.\u00a0 Number three was Barbara\u2019s, the work ethic.\u00a0 Number four was mine, which is relating to people and loving people.\u00a0 And I have fulfilled what you wanted me to do, Bob.\u00a0 I have forgotten what number five is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was stalling.\u00a0 I was trying to go, \u201cWhere is it? children reach a certain age, Jim and Jerolyn Bogear take their kids on what they refer to as a rite of passage trip.\u00a0 It\u2019s a combination of serious business and some serious fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well don\u2019t we all like to get away?\u00a0 We oftentimes do retreats, and it helps our people think and dream and talk.\u00a0 So I think out of that normal \u201cDad\u2019s going to sit down and talk to me while we\u2019re sitting on the couch\u201d and there\u2019s a hundred other distractions or things going on in life, this is a focused attempt.\u00a0 And like we said, it\u2019s a rite of passage trip.\u00a0 It\u2019s a handing of the baton of these values that we\u2019ve been trying to live out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLifeToday<\/em> for Friday, April 29<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife\u00ae, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We\u2019ll talk today to a mom and dad who have found a creative way to pass on a legacy of faith to their children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I\u2019m kind of wondering if parents are listening to our program today and they\u2019ve got younger kids, should they have the younger kids continue to listen?\u00a0 I\u2019m just afraid the kids are going to go, \u201cHey, I want to go on some nice vacation with Dad here in a couple of years.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, maybe what the parents need to do is send the children off in a corner with a map of the United States, and just let them think about \u201cWhere would you like to go?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah.\u00a0 Just cut off Alaska and Hawaii because they might get big ideas if you leave those on the map.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 No doubt about it.\u00a0 We heard earlier about Jim Bogear\u2019s wonderful adventure to New York City with his daughter, Lauren.\u00a0 He joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> along with his wife, Jerolyn.\u00a0 Welcome back to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jim is a pastor, Jerolyn is a school teacher, and they live in Sacramento, California.\u00a0 They have three children, and they\u2019ve written a book called <em>Faith Legacy.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>We mentioned earlier how you have six values that you guys have hammered out as a couple.\u00a0 Now you said, Jim, these came from a sermon series, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, Jerolyn mentioned that, that we preached on this, but we had already laid the values out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was going to ask if you\u2019d gone to the Vice President here of the Bogear family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What was your part in hammering out these values that he ended up preaching on, but you both ended up passing on to your children?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think in working out exactly how we were going to do that.\u00a0 What were the steps we\u2019d take in getting these values to our children, how do we practically make it a part of our lives?\u00a0 And then also, analyzing how are we modeling these values for our children?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe talk about that a lot in the book.\u00a0 You were talking earlier about a bridge \u2013 that you have a bridge of a relationship to your children.\u00a0 And that is part of the bridge \u2013 that we had already been living out these values for our children, not perfectly, but we\u2019d been trying, and they\u2019d been seeing that.\u00a0 And in doing so, we were asking them, \u201cWe want you to live out these values as well.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now you guys don\u2019t know this, but Barbara and I early in our marriage after we\u2019d had two or three children had a getaway and we just did a little exercise where we attempted to hammer out what were, and what became the core values of our family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to tell you that what you have talked about in this book we have experienced.\u00a0 Now we don\u2019t have the same six that you have, but we hammered out five, and just the fact that Barbara and I agreed upon our five core values in advance \u2013 it settled a lot of issues as we raised our children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You didn\u2019t agree at the beginning of that retreat.\u00a0 You had different values going into the retreat, didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, actually what we did was she wrote a list of her top ten values and ranked them, I wrote a list of my top ten values and I ranked them.\u00a0 And then we got together and argued.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\u00a0 I mean, excuse me, hammered out and prayerfully considered . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Discussed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Discussed, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, there you go.\u00a0 Spiritually considered our values.\u00a0 Now, we did, we talked about them, and there was give and take.\u00a0 There were some on my list that didn\u2019t make the top five and some on hers that didn\u2019t make our top five and we consolidated others.\u00a0 But just the discipline that you had in your family to come up with these six probably settled a lot of arguments between you two as a couple and with your children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you come up with these six by getting away for a weekend and talking about it, do you remember the process by which the six emerged in your thinking?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019re looking at each other like \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have no idea where these six came from \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know where these came from.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do know we didn\u2019t take a weekend away to plan this.\u00a0 We began to talk about them.\u00a0 Because, again, as Jerolyn said, we were trying to live these out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe hadn\u2019t necessarily put names with some of those, because, like one of the values, integrity, we really wanted a person who was a person of integrity to have a good work ethic.\u00a0 Well, that was something that we were raised with, we understood, but we began to put honesty and truth-telling and work ethic, so maybe it\u2019s a blend of some of those that we felt like we gave a name integrity and what that looks like to it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Would you have these conversations around the table after dinner, or going to bed?\u00a0 I\u2019m just wondering where you found the time and how the conversation \u2013 Did you say, \u201cHey, let\u2019s talk about our values again tonight,\u201d or how did you do it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was just living life, you know, what is this that we\u2019re living out for our children?\u00a0 What are we going to call this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 We realized, as I said earlier, we put a name with it, the value that we were trying to instill.\u00a0 So, yes, in general living life and having conversations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then at some point you said, \u201cLet\u2019s drive this home through these legacy trips\u201d that you took your kids on.\u00a0 You took your oldest daughter to New York.\u00a0 When it came time for your second child \u2013 is that a son or a daughter?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 A son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He didn\u2019t want to go to New York, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, correct.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Where did he want to go?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 We ended up in Pebble Beach.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And so did Jerolyn get to go with him to Pebble Beach because you got to go to New York City with your daughter?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Great question.\u00a0 A wonderful question.\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And was Jerolyn in agreement with that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Were you in agreement with that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was in agreement.\u00a0 It was the New York City one I wanted to go to more.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was still being a mom at home, I was holding down the fort.\u00a0 But we also \u2013 you know we keep talking about the different trips, and there are so many different ways, and especially in this economy now, you know.\u00a0 \u201cHow can we do this?\u00a0 We can\u2019t afford a trip to New York City,\u201d and probably today we couldn\u2019t afford a trip to New York City either.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you can take day trips, take six Saturdays in a row and spend it with your child, doing something that they enjoy doing, get into their world, and then discuss each of the values.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m convinced right now there are listeners who are going, \u201cOkay, you\u2019ve baited us long enough. What are the six values, and how do you teach them in terms of what is the object lesson you give your children on this legacy trip to drive home the point?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, as Jim said before, the first value is devotion, loving the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.\u00a0 We have Peter as being our biblical example, we have the gift of the key, and we have the question.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe drive it home with the way they\u2019ve been raised, in that we\u2019ve been raising them with biblical values, Christ-like values, that we have been taking them to church, that we have been showing them how to read the Bible and discussing the Bible with them.\u00a0 And then at the end of each chapter we have age-appropriate activities that you can do with your children to drive home the point of each of the values.\u00a0 But devotion is the first one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, for example, what kind of an activity would you do around devotion?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we have it broken down in ages \u2013 between ages six and ten or eleven, you could start teaching them to have TAWG time, time alone with God, where they literally spend some time alone and you set the parameters for what that is:\u00a0 they are in a room alone, they are having prayer time or they can have Christian music playing, or they can be reading a book, or whatever \u2013 as long as they are learning to be alone with themselves, for one, and with the Lord at the same time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Integrity is the second value that we talk about in the book, and the gift that we give is a mirror, and we also talk about \u201cHow is the mirror looking?\u201d as the question.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now do you give an actual mirror?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes we do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How big of a mirror?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 It depends on the size and style.\u00a0 We try to find it appropriate for a girl or a boy.\u00a0 Nothing huge.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Guys never look in mirrors \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So why give a guy a mirror?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A little pocket mirror \u2013 that\u2019s all you need, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because we want them to look and see themselves, identifying their identity in Christ, and we want them to look at that image that they are becoming more and more Christ-like. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who\u2019s your biblical character for integrity?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 David.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well he had some lapses in integrity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely, and we talk about that.\u00a0 Just like we don\u2019t have it perfect as parents, we mess up all the time, David was too, but it was said of him that he was one who was \u201cafter God\u2019s own heart.\u201d\u00a0 We look at his life, and we look at that, the biblical example, and we also admit that David failed.\u00a0 David messed up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As we think about integrity we could think about right and wrong choices, but as I heard you guys discussing it earlier, you mentioned work ethic falls under this topic.\u00a0 That was one of Barbara\u2019s core values, so she would really buy in to your definition of integrity, teaching your children what a full day\u2019s work was and to do things right the first time.\u00a0 She\u2019s big on that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re exactly right, and we really want this good work ethic.\u00a0 We don\u2019t want people to say you\u2019re lazy.\u00a0 What kind of representation is that of Christ and following him as a Christ-follower?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI stopped at one of our son\u2019s place of employment when he was working in high school and I said to the manager that had hired him.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI\u2019ve got a question.\u201d\u00a0 We stepped outside; our son wasn\u2019t there, Shay, and I said, \u201cHow\u2019s he doing, because we have a value of integrity?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe stopped me and said, \u201cSir, we have a value of integrity in this company, and he is doing well.\u00a0 He is working hard; he is going above and beyond.\u201d\u00a0 I thought that was interesting that here it is, somebody noticing that he was working hard and fulfilling that integrity.\u00a0 I thought it was a neat story for us as a parent.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It never hurts to inspect what you expect.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, you\u2019ve got devotion, integrity.\u00a0 What\u2019s the third one?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 The third one is purity, and with purity we give them a purity ring.\u00a0 Some can choose some of the rings you find in Christian stores.\u00a0 We let them choose the style they wanted, and they will wear that until they get married, until they replace it with their wedding band.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe biblical character is Joseph for that, because he was the man who ran from temptation, and to show that it can be done, that this is a lifestyle that you can live and your marriage will be stronger for waiting.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo that\u2019s what we do for purity.\u00a0 And the question is, \u201cWhat\u2019s on your hand?\u201d\u00a0 You know, before they go on a date, although we encourage group dating, but when they can start dating, \u201cWhat\u2019s on your hand?\u201d just to remind them of that commitment they\u2019ve made to purity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And do you define purity for them, because in this culture, I mean, peers are defining morality and how far you go, and hooking up . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Uh-huh.\u00a0 Your version of purity may not match my version of purity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes \u2013 and then on the legacy trip, my son and I had some great discussions about that specifically, from man to man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, you had to talk about pornography; you had to talk about all kinds of issues, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Absolutely, and explaining some terms to help make sure he understood what may be said in the locker room.\u00a0 He played some sports, and those kinds of things, just to be very honest and open of what\u2019s in our brain, what\u2019s in our mind, the whole eye-gate and the ear-gate, what we allow to come in, so absolutely.\u00a0 Yes, we tried to define that very clear of purity.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, there\u2019s a dad who is listening to you, Jim, and he\u2019s going, \u201cYou\u2019re the pastor, you know how to say these things.\u00a0 You\u2019re polished, you\u2019re a professional.\u201d\u00a0 How do you talk to a 16-year-old boy about pornography?\u00a0 I\u2019ll set him across the table from you; what do you say to your son about pornography and about purity?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 First we talk about the value and the respect of a woman.\u00a0 We begin to talk about what this means.\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing.\u00a0 You can be a great communicator, and you two are \u2013 how do you come across that table to your son?\u00a0 It\u2019s amazing the words that don\u2019t come out of your mouth.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGuys, you don\u2019t have to be perfect in this.\u00a0 They may already know more than you think they know, or at least more than you know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your hands are clammy even now, even talking about it, aren\u2019t they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 So don\u2019t think that just because you\u2019re \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s okay to be scared, isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 It\u2019s just like you said earlier.\u00a0 We\u2019re not perfect.\u00a0 It is nerve-wracking.\u00a0 We\u2019re oftentimes maybe more nervous than the child in this process.\u00a0 Their eyes and ears are open, listening to what you say, so we want to make sure we say it as best we can.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So do you ask him point-blank if he\u2019s looked at any stuff with buddies on the internet or in magazines or in movies?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and we\u2019ve tried to ask about that point-blank, about that direct.\u00a0 They know that we have access to their computer, to their passwords, and we\u2019ve set that up for protection from them so we can look and check that as well.\u00a0 Some people may think it\u2019s an invasion of privacy; we don\u2019t.\u00a0 We think it\u2019s being very good parents, and so we do ask them very directly those kind of questions, and we\u2019ve had some pretty open and honest conversations.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJerolyn does a wonderful job of asking questions, and we\u2019ve had some great dinner conversations or after-dinner conversations.\u00a0 In the busyness of our schedule, somebody will say, \u201cWell, how do you have those?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe make time for those; we do our best to do that, even if we\u2019re grabbing dinner on the fly, on the run, we come home, we still try to find those times to ask those questions and to be open and honest with them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut we also are open and honest with ours.\u00a0 They have access; if they want to look at Dad\u2019s laptop, here it is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And if you ask the hard question, I think you have to be ready to deliver a gentle grace and a gentle forgiveness if they fail.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just to let them know that no matter what they share, no matter how shocked you might be, you\u2019re going to love them, you\u2019re going to be there for them, you\u2019re going to keep believing in them, and that you\u2019re a safe person for them to be real with and for them to fail with.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 And we\u2019ve had some honest answers in a variety of the values, and we trust that we\u2019ve done a good job of extending grace and love, because we\u2019ve also been there in different areas of struggle.\u00a0 I would say to parents, \u201cDads, you may have to honestly confess some things.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou may have to be willing to share and grow through that and say, \u2018Hey, I haven\u2019t been perfect in this area,\u2019 not just purity, but whatever it may be.\u00a0 Maybe I cut some things off at work, or maybe I didn\u2019t have a good attitude, or maybe my anger really flared up, and I have to ask for forgiveness and I have to be honest and vulnerable about the struggles that I have.\u201d\u00a0 And that\u2019s risky, but it\u2019s really fair and it\u2019s best.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You mentioned a good attitude.\u00a0 That\u2019s one of the six, right?\u00a0 Having a good attitude.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, the fourth one is positive attitude.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And Mom put that on the list and said, \u201cYou better talk to them about this while they\u2019re on that trip.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I like that value.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019d better come home with a good attitude.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s going to be in all capital letters at our house, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 We often joke \u2013 even if it kills us, you\u2019re going to have a positive attitude!\u00a0 We joke with our kids because we believe in that so much.\u00a0 A positive attitude \u2013 and the gift we give is an eagle, and we simply ask the question, \u201cHow high will you fly?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019ve often heard from others, attitude determines your altitude.\u00a0 Where are you going to go in life, and we believe that is so important.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 We chose Paul as the biblical representative of that.\u00a0 We said, \u201cWho else can you pick besides Paul?\u201d\u00a0 You know, they flog him, they try to kill him, they put him in prison.\u00a0 He says, \u201cYea, put me in prison.\u00a0 I can tell people here about Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 And then they let him go.\u00a0 \u201cYea, thanks for letting me go.\u201d\u00a0 And then they say, \u201cWell, we\u2019re going to kill you.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cPlease kill me, then I can go and be with the Lord in heaven.\u201d\u00a0 You can\u2019t have a positive attitude better than that, so . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well he said, \u201cI\u2019ve learned the secret of being content in all things.\u00a0 I\u2019ve had plenty and I\u2019ve had want.\u00a0 It\u2019s fine.\u00a0 I\u2019ve learned how to be content; I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.\u201d\u00a0 So that\u2019s a great representation of a good attitude.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now do they put the eagle in their room?\u00a0 Is there a cage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not a real eagle.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, sorry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What\u2019s the fifth value?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Generosity, and we actually gave them a silver dollar in the year they were born, and we just ask them, \u201cWhat are you doing with what you hold?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis idea of we really want generous people.\u00a0 We love and serve a God who is so incredibly generous that we want to do that.\u00a0 We actually talk about the biblical character is Barnabas, and really how he was generous in so much of his way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 And the generosity isn\u2019t just with your finances or your belongings, but also with your heart, with your service, with your time.\u00a0 We just happened to use the silver dollar as our gift.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Generosity is often-times equated with money, but we\u2019re talking about generous in your love, in your forgiveness of people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 In grace.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that\u2019s where Barnabas, Son of Encouragement, he was the one who came alongside and was generous and supported the Apostle Paul.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, even when others didn\u2019t necessarily believe in him or were scared of Paul, Barnabas came alongside.\u00a0 You\u2019re right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And the last of the six?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 The last is significance, and we use Jesus as our biblical example there.\u00a0 It\u2019s really basically all about relationships.\u00a0 Our gift is framed pictures of family and friends, people who have been significant in your life, and how are you going to be significant in other people\u2019s lives?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If I called one of your kids today and said, \u201cWhat are the six values,\" would they be able to tick them off, do you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think so.\u00a0 I think eventually they would get through all six.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 I hope so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If not, you\u2019d send them to the refrigerator.\u00a0 They could just read them off the list there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or the wall.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do they have all these object lessons of these values still in their rooms today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Our son doesn\u2019t have them at college, but yes, our daughter took them all with her when she moved out of the house, and they\u2019re all in our son\u2019s room waiting for him in college, and our daughter has them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alright, I\u2019m going to ask a question that I know a ton of our listeners are asking right now.\u00a0 I\u2019m looking at the front of your book, and I noticed that your book is copyrighted.\u00a0 Now, there are a lot of listeners listening that are going, \u201cThose six values -- I\u2019d like to steal those six values.\u00a0 Those fit for our family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Integrity.\u00a0 Be honest.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Would you give our listeners, if they really like your six values, or maybe four of the six, would you give them permission to take those values?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 We would love that.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Absolutely, positively.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s why you wrote the book, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s why we wrote the book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 We felt like that.\u00a0 We had somebody read the book before it went to print, and we said, \u201cWell, maybe people have other values.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cOh, no. We think,\u201d and this was somebody who was a grandmother.\u00a0 \u201cWe think these are the six values, these are great, we want our children to instill in their grandchildren.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I\u2019d say to anybody who is listening:\u00a0 As a parent, whether you\u2019re almost done or if you\u2019re just getting started, what Jim and Jerolyn have modeled here is \u2013 if you don\u2019t like their six values, or you like three of them, take with permission their three values that you do like, and figure out two or three more that you as a couple can agree to.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRaise your children intentionally and embed these principles, these values in their souls because you know what?\u00a0 All of us are in the process of passing on out of this life, and we\u2019re passing it on to another generation.\u00a0 That\u2019s the title of your book: <em>Faith Legacy<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just appreciate you guys and appreciate you sharing your story with our listeners.\u00a0 I hope many of our listeners will also leave a legacy of faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jim:<\/strong>\u00a0 Dennis, can I just say on that, I really appreciate that.\u00a0 We\u2019ve seen legacy around this with FamilyLife, and legacy is a big word for us.\u00a0 We can all leave an inheritance of something, when we talk about monetary, but we want to leave and live a life of legacy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just think it\u2019s so important; that word is so valued around our home that it really pictures for us the completion of this book \u2013 of now, handing it to them, and as they\u2019ve gone off to college or whatever we\u2019ve taken them and said, \u201cNow, begin to live and to leave your own legacy.\u00a0 Begin to follow that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut these aren\u2019t new values with us.\u00a0 How could we dare hang on to them?\u00a0 These are values that others have had and we\u2019ve just begun to give words to, so they\u2019re not even stealing.\u00a0 They are using what we\u2019ve taken from others, I\u2019m sure, as we\u2019ve learned around the way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want to find out here \u2013 a little reality check.\u00a0 You said you and Barbara got away for a weekend and came up with five values for your family, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I know this was a long, long time ago.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you still remember what the five are?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, well in general.\u00a0 They weren\u2019t words exactly like this, but first and foremost was love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, so these guys stole that one from you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They did.\u00a0 I think they got it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Jerolyn:<\/strong>\u00a0 You found us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think secondly is the greatest mission a person can be on in their lives, and that\u2019s the Great Commission, be a part of proclaiming the Gospel.\u00a0 Number three was Barbara\u2019s, the work ethic.\u00a0 Number four was mine, which is relating to people and loving people.\u00a0 And I have fulfilled what you wanted me to do, Bob.\u00a0 I have forgotten what number five is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was stalling.\u00a0 I was trying to go, \u201cWhere is it?
