On the day Kevin Cross was taken into custody and put in jail, he was not the only person to be locked in a jail cell that day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was a man that day, on February 10, 1988, who was just sentenced to a triple death sentence.\u00a0 They laughed and chuckled and said, \u201cKevin, you\u2019re going to go in and be his roommate.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I thought, \u201cWhoa!\u00a0 Whoa!\u00a0 Whoa!\u00a0 I\u2019m 120 pounds soaking wet.\u00a0 You can\u2019t do this!\u00a0 I\u2019m white collar, I\u2019m the boy wonder, I\u2019m the . . .\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re going in there with him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo here I am in this cell, and here\u2019s this kid who is this young man who has nothing to live for.\u00a0 I just went in there thinking, \u201cOh my goodness.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt that point, I did the jailhouse prayer.\u00a0 The jailhouse prayer goes like this, \u201cGod?\u00a0 Get me out of here!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, April 22<sup>nd<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We will hear today how God answered Kevin Cross\u2019s jailhouse prayer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe story we\u2019re hearing this week sounds like something out of a TV episode or a movie or something, doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, our guest even said it was like a Grisham novel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kevin Cross joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>Kevin, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kevin is a former businessman.\u00a0 I say that because he worked in an accounting firm for over 17 years.\u00a0 He now works for a friend of ours, Crawford Lorritts, at Fellowship Bible Church in Roswell, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta.\u00a0 He\u2019s been married since 1993 and has two children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe has written a book called <em>Embezzlement:<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>A True Crime Story.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>You know, Kevin, you were nineteen years old working for the Broward County Sheriff\u2019s office.\u00a0 This was the guy who trained Al Pacino in how to be a gangster because he\u2019d already been around so many of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou as a nineteen and twenty year old ripped off the Broward County Sheriff\u2019s Department of $300,000, embezzling it, trading it, making money, and then living the high life.\u00a0 You got the mob involved to where your life was threatened.\u00a0 Your buddy\u2019s sister\u2019s life was in danger.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever said this to anyone on the broadcast, but I think you can handle it and I think you\u2019ll agree with it \u2013 to have gone to work for the Broward County Sheriff\u2019s Department and to have embezzled 300 grand, you were an <em>idiot<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, like I said, if you\u2019re going to be dumb, you had better be brave.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, seriously, Kevin, not that embezzlement ever makes sense, but the sheriff\u2019s department!?\u00a0 When the FBI came to your door, knocked on it, and read you rights, did all of that come crashing in at that point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 It did, it did.\u00a0 But, you know, I was still self-deceived, because here I am at the sheriff\u2019s office and they\u2019re ready to book me, and I\u2019m thinking, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I\u2019ll get my law school buddies to get me out of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your law school buddies!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 My law school buddies.\u00a0 I\u2019m still living a delusional life that I am still the center of.\u00a0 I am still my god.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was ready to crash and burn, because as they walked me into this pod \u2013 if you can imagine it, the sheriff had just constructed this multi-million dollar crime complex on the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve ever seen it, it\u2019s a beautiful, decadent area.\u00a0 From the outside, the building looks beautiful.\u00a0 From the inside, it\u2019s very different.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo they walk you into this pod over-populated, with several hundred people in this pod, and there were several little rooms in the pod that were for solitary confinement.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So this was jail?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 This was jail.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey booked me with a million dollar bond.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t know how much I had stolen, so they\u2019d made the bond really high.\u00a0 They thought, \u201cWe don\u2019t want the guy to go to Brazil or to Mexico or to wherever he could flee to, so we\u2019re going to throw him in here and we\u2019re going to set the bond at a million dollars.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to ask you this question:\u00a0 Had you seen the sheriff yet, at this point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I had no plans to.\u00a0 I was scared silly.\u00a0 I was cocky, but still had the reality that if he saw me, that would be the last encounter.\u00a0 I betrayed him!\u00a0 I completely betrayed a man who hired me to be entrusted with something very precious \u2013 his accounts.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You pulled this off for a year and a half.\u00a0 Now you had been out of the county for a year and you\u2019d been in law school.\u00a0 How\u2019d you get found out? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, because I told the mob my scheme and I gave them the money, I guess I\u2019m thinking they ran out of that $50,000 plus a few extra thousand, they were probably thinking, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 <em>CrimeStoppers<\/em>.\u00a0 We could pick up a quick five grand.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, an anonymous tip turned me in.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know who did it, but I am so grateful that God used them to turn me in.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the time though, I can tell you, I wasn\u2019t thinking that way.\u00a0 I was thinking, \u201cI\u2019ll beat this!\u00a0 I\u2019ll beat this!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo they threw me in this jail cell in solitary confinement and I was thinking, \u201cYeah, that\u2019s good, put me in solitary confinement because I don\u2019t want to be with the rest of these criminals, these bad people.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said, \u201cOh, don\u2019t worry!\u00a0 We\u2019re going to put you some place in solitary confinement.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was a man that day, on February 10, 1988, who was just sentenced to a triple death sentence.\u00a0 This man had gone into a Wendy\u2019s restaurant and massacred his co-workers, and that very day he had been sentenced to death.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey had him sentenced to solitary confinement because he had nothing to live for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey laughed and chuckled and said, \u201cKevin, you\u2019re going to go in and be his roommate.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I thought, \u201cWhoa!\u00a0 Whoa!\u00a0 Whoa!\u00a0 I\u2019m 120 pounds soaking wet.\u00a0 You can\u2019t do this!\u00a0 I\u2019m white collar, I\u2019m the boy wonder, I\u2019m the . . .\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said, \u201cYou\u2019re going in there with him.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Seriously?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Seriously.\u00a0 They chuckled and laughed and I thought, \u201cIsn\u2019t that just jailhouse justice?\u201d\u00a0 I can imagine that maybe word got through and the sheriff said, \u201cLook, don\u2019t treat him with any more respect than anyone else.\u00a0 Matter of fact, this is probably the best place for him.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo here I am in this cell, about six foot by six foot.\u00a0 You can imagine this in your mind\u2019s eye, can\u2019t you?\u00a0 And here\u2019s this kid who is this young man who has nothing to live for.\u00a0 I just went in there thinking, \u201cOh my goodness.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt that point, I did the jailhouse prayer.\u00a0 The jailhouse prayer goes like this, \u201cGod?\u00a0 Get me out of here!\u00a0 Get me out of this jam!\u00a0 I\u2019ll do whatever it takes.\u00a0 I\u2019m not like the rest of these people.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry I got caught.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I was quiet for the first time.\u00a0 I heard everybody else praying the same prayer:\u00a0 \u201cLord, get us out of here.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been framed.\u00a0 We won\u2019t do this again.\u201d\u00a0 I thought, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I am no different from the rest of these folks.\u00a0 I need to come clean.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if you can imagine this little jail cell, unlike jails like in China where you\u2019d have little pieces Scripture and you\u2019d be hiding those in your hand, there were torn Bibles all over the place, thrown.\u00a0 You can imagine that an angry inmate had just thrown a Bible and ripped it.\u00a0 So I looked around the jail cell for little pieces of God\u2019s Word because I was hungry, very hungry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhere I had landed was the lowest any human being could land in America, I guess.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What did the murderer say to you when you came in?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not a word.\u00a0 Not a word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI liken it to Daniel being in the lion\u2019s den and I\u2019m sure those lions were just ready to pounce.\u00a0 That\u2019s the way I felt and I thought, \u201cOh man.\u201d\u00a0 In the corner of my eye I\u2019m trying to keep an eye on Him and out of the other corner of my eye look for a place I could be as far away from Him as possible.\u00a0 All the while, I\u2019m having this arm wrestling with God.\u00a0 I knew He was drawing me to Himself and He wanted me to come clean.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI picked up a piece of Scripture from the corner of the cell.\u00a0 It was Psalm 51.\u00a0 It was when David had just killed a man because he wanted his wife.\u00a0 David came clean with the Lord and he talks about his bones just aching and wasting away.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWow!\u00a0 I\u2019m having the same symptoms.\u00a0 Lord, I need to come clean.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s amazing.\u00a0 There are people listening right now who haven\u2019t done the awful crime that I have done, but they have felt their bones just aching away.\u00a0 I think of a woman who just recently confessed to me that she ran up $40,000 in credit card debt, and she didn\u2019t tell her husband.\u00a0 She said, \u201cI haven\u2019t even been able to come to church.\u00a0 I\u2019m stuck.\u00a0 I\u2019m in a difficult situation.\u00a0 I feel so much better confessing it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I said, \u201cGod, I\u2019m sorry.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was amazing; for the first time in my life I had felt a peace and a freedom.\u00a0 Now, the ironic thing was I had never been in more trouble.\u00a0 I had never been in a place where my life was threatened more than it was right then.\u00a0 But I had a freedom, and I had a peace.\u00a0 I had hope after that prayer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How long were you in jail?\u00a0 When did you finally see one of your law school buddies or a lawyer or whoever came to see you?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that first day I thought, \u201cI\u2019m in here forever.\u201d\u00a0 I mean, a million dollar bond?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWho knows, maybe I\u2019m going to die between now and then.\u00a0 Amazingly, like in Daniel\u2019s case, God closed the mouths of the lions, and that man didn\u2019t touch me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Take us to that moment when the person most important to you walked through the jailhouse door \u2013 your dad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know, my dad had gotten me the position with the sheriff because he worked there.\u00a0 A few days later after the headline news and the newspapers came out with my mug shot, calling me this kid who betrayed the sheriff; this boy wonder and now look at him.\u00a0 Well, the doors opened \u2013 they were Serpico style doors \u2013 and the sheriff\u2019s office just went to a hush as they saw my dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe brought with him a handful of newspapers from several different locales.\u00a0 He plopped them on a large desk and said, \u201cThis is all I know about what my son did.\u201d\u00a0 You could hear a pin drop.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe turned around and walked out.\u00a0 He dressed up that day just like it was his last day of work because he knew he was going to have an appointment with the sheriff, and the sheriff would wag his finger at him and say, \u201cYou\u2019re going to lose your job!\u201d\u00a0 He knew that was going to happen.\u00a0 That, again, is that ripple effect.\u00a0 If my words have any weight today, I want to say this whole American dream thing \u2013 I was pursuing it and I didn\u2019t care who I hurt.\u00a0 I had no idea, though, that it was going to have such a ripple effect.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo it God\u2019s way.\u00a0 When we do money God\u2019s way, there\u2019s a peace and a pleasure and a hope, but when we do it the world\u2019s way, there is certain heartache.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So when your dad came into your cell, and saw you for the first time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 He saw me.\u00a0 He cried.\u00a0 I cried.\u00a0 Like a great dad, not only did he forgive me, but he blamed himself.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that just the way we are?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, \u201cNo, no, no, Dad.\u00a0 I pursued the way of the world, and this is exactly where God wants me.\u201d\u00a0 I had a peace in a jail cell.\u00a0 I was there for eight days until they lowered my bail to something we could muster up.\u00a0 Finally, on the eighth day, they came in and said, \u201cCross?\u00a0 Raymond K.?\u00a0 You\u2019ve been released.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI took an hour and went cell to cell, telling the inmates, telling these people in this pod number whatever that I had freedom.\u00a0 They said, \u201cYeah.\u00a0 You\u2019re walking out right now.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I said, \u201cNo, no, no, I got freedom eight days ago by giving my heart to the Lord, and you can have that freedom also.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey came back and said, \u201cCross, are you ready to go, or do you want to stay?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cJust give me a little bit more time.\u201d\u00a0 I went cell to cell, room to room, telling these folks about my newfound freedom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was an amazing thing because God had shown me that His way is so much sweeter.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, this is all with torn-up Scriptures that you found in the cell, but you had been raised in a home where you\u2019d heard the Word of God, you\u2019d gone to Christian schools, so you were really reaching back into the reservoir of what had been poured into your life as you cried out to the Lord.\u00a0 You had some foundation that you could reach back to, didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 All of those Scriptures made sense.\u00a0 All those Scriptures came back, and I thought, \u201cWow!\u00a0 Here\u2019s the realness, the relevancy and the truth of God\u2019s Word.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I saw even more, as I was reading Proverbs; I was seeing my life in that <em>foolish<\/em> son.\u00a0 I was thinking, \u201cWow, I read that years ago and couldn\u2019t identify.\u00a0 Now I\u2019m reading it and I see the truth.\u00a0 I see the truth.\u00a0 And I also see the truth in forgiveness.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 But you\u2019re right, I drew a great deal upon that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So eight days after you were locked up, you made bail, but you still had a mountain to climb.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I returned as much as I could.\u00a0 I sold all the assets, but I still owed $100,000 to the sheriff . . . and my credit card.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019re working out restitution, trying to have them drop the charges if you pay it back, or what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 They said, \u201cLook, if you pay it back, we\u2019ll give you fifteen years\u2019 probation.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, \u201cWow!\u00a0 Probation?\u00a0 I love that!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said, \u201cWell you\u2019re going to have to leave law school.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI don\u2019t care.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to go to jail!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cAre you sure?\u00a0 You\u2019ll be a felon.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI don\u2019t care!\u00a0 I\u2019ll take it.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to go back.\u201d\u00a0 You see, I was fearful.\u00a0 But God used that plea bargain; because, you see, if I paid back the money within five years, they would let me off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You started paying back, but you were a hundred thousand short?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 A hundred thousand short, and with credit cards, too.\u00a0 And here\u2019s the thing with ill-gotten gain.\u00a0 I ran up my credit cards during this time.\u00a0 Can you imagine?\u00a0 I not only was stealing money from the sheriff, I was actually stealing money from my creditors!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was running up my credit cards without <em>any way<\/em> of paying it back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTalk about \u201cdumb.\u201d\u00a0 I got a whole big education.\u00a0 As a matter of fact, when I was doing this, I bought a house with negative amortization.\u00a0 I got a mortgage where I would owe more every month than I did when I first financed the house.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou might say, \u201cHow do you do that?\u201d\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s called creative financing.\u00a0 I decided to do that because I wanted a low payment.\u00a0 I violated every one of God\u2019s principles about finance.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I realized \u2013 there was so much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI realized, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I\u2019m going to pay back this money.\u201d\u00a0 So I got a job by day, making minimum payments on this $100,000.\u00a0 Now, at night, I needed a job making some grocery money and gas money.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, they let you out of jail to get a job to be able to make restitution.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 They gave me a ninety day sentence and they said, \u201cLook, we\u2019ll let you out, but you\u2019re on probation.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to keep your nose clean; you\u2019ve got to pay the money back.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But, ninety days?\u00a0 One hundred grand?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How are you going to do that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I had five years to pay it back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 But it would be up to fifteen years, but I thought, \u201cThat\u2019s fifteen years.\u00a0 I\u2019m only twenty years old, twenty one.\u00a0 Fifteen years is like a lifetime.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to do everything I possibly can to pay this back sooner.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, at night, I needed to get a job.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t get a job delivering pizzas because I didn\u2019t have adequate insurance on my car.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a kid who was in law school; most likely to succeed, and I can\u2019t get a job delivering pizzas.\u00a0 Talk about a reality check.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut there was one job that I could get:\u00a0 valet parking.\u00a0 Valet parking, where there was a permanent \u201cHelp Wanted\u201d sign at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Miami.\u00a0 The problem is, if you ever see a sign that permanently says \u201cHelp Wanted,\u201d there\u2019s a problem with that.\u00a0 It means somebody quits every night.\u00a0 And I know why.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs the crow flies, you had to run a mile from the ramp to the parking lot.\u00a0 Well, if you do a few miles like that, it\u2019s a great workout, but you don\u2019t want to go back and do it again tomorrow; especially for a dollar per car.\u00a0 But I didn\u2019t care.\u00a0 I was hungry, hungry for food even!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I was living in my car underneath this overpass in downtown Miami \u2013 talk about a kid who had fallen so hard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your parents didn\u2019t take you back in?\u00a0 Didn\u2019t give you a place to stay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, here\u2019s the thing.\u00a0 I was ashamed.\u00a0 I was like the prodigal.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t going back until God moved in my heart to do just that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs the prodigal, I wasn\u2019t going back yet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Had your dad lost his job?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, he didn\u2019t.\u00a0 Miraculously, he never lost his job.\u00a0 It was on the bubble there, and there were days he went in wondering, \u201cDo I still have a job?\u201d\u00a0 But he never got the pink slip, probably because I decided to say, \u201cHey, I owe.\u00a0 I did it.\u00a0 I\u2019m guilty.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe that diffused the whole anger against my dad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How long before you got the whole thing paid off?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Less than five years.\u00a0 But, here\u2019s the thing.\u00a0 I\u2019m valet parking at night, and I\u2019m still thinking, \u201cWow!\u201d\u00a0 A brand new Jaguar drives up to the ramp, and you know that was my thing.\u00a0 Money was my god.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cI\u2019m the next runner \u2013 the next valet parker.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe man gets out of the car, and he\u2019s a local celebrity, Dwight Lauderdale.\u00a0 He\u2019s the anchorman of Channel 10 News in Miami.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWow!\u00a0 OK, things are starting to change.\u00a0 OK, God.\u201d\u00a0 And I got into his Jaguar, his Jag-u-ar (I didn\u2019t know how to say it back then).\u00a0 I went to turn that little kitty cat on, and it was already on. Have you ever turned on a car that\u2019s on?\u00a0 Oh, it grinds.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt sounded like a dead cat.\u00a0 And when you do it to a Jaguar, it\u2019s really a cat.\u00a0 So, I put it into drive and sped away.\u00a0 I was trying to look cool and then I got in the car.\u00a0 If looks could kill, I wouldn\u2019t be here today, and if he was any faster, he would have pulled me out of the car.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was driving away and thinking, \u201cI\u2019m a loser.\u00a0 I\u2019m a loser.\u00a0 God, I gave my heart to you in a jail cell, and now I can\u2019t even drive a car?\u00a0 There\u2019s no hope, God.\u00a0 I have $100,000 in debt.\u00a0 I\u2019m living in my car underneath an exit ramp in downtown Miami.\u00a0 There can\u2019t be anything any worse than this.\u00a0 Maybe it didn\u2019t take.\u00a0 Maybe it didn\u2019t work.\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s better the other way.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was despairing, and I turned on the radio.\u00a0 Maybe like today, how some people might have stumbled upon this broadcast.\u00a0 I turned on the radio, and I needed to hear the rock (not rock \u2018n\u2019 roll).\u00a0 I kept changing the channel, changing the channel, until I heard this plain vanilla guy.\u00a0 It was Larry Burkett.\u00a0 He was talking about hope when you have no hope.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, \u201cThat\u2019s me.\u201d\u00a0 He talked about how many of us don\u2019t understand that what we\u2019ve been given is a gift to us.\u00a0 We\u2019re just stewards; we\u2019re just managers of His stuff.\u00a0 The earth is the Lord\u2019s and everything in it; the world and all who dwell in it.\u201d Psalm 24\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI never read that.\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 Some have even been taking God\u2019s stuff and embezzling it.\u201d\u00a0 I thought, \u201cThere\u2019s sky cam in the Jaguar.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cOf course,\u201d I thought, \u201che\u2019s an anchorman.\u00a0 I\u2019m being followed.\u201d\u00a0 So I pulled the car over, and he said, \u201cBut you can give your heart to the Lord right now.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI pulled the car over and I wept.\u00a0 I wept.\u00a0 I said, \u201cGod, I can\u2019t do this anymore.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe (Larry Burkett) mentioned Martin Luther.\u00a0 He said, \u201cThere are three conversions, Martin Luther would say:\u00a0 conversion of the heart, conversion of the mind, and conversion of the pocketbook.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, the heart and the mind I gave to the Lord in that jail cell with that Wendy\u2019s murderer.\u00a0\u00a0 But, you know, I\u2019d never given Him this area of my life \u2013 the area of finances.\u00a0 That area I gave to Him in that Jaguar, and I thought, \u201cOh, Lord, it\u2019s Yours.\u00a0 Lord, will You take it now?\u00a0 Will you just repair my life?\u00a0 I want to live for You.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe talked about how there are so many verses in God\u2019s Word that talk about money \u2013 2,350 verses!\u00a0 And He wants us to have peace in it.\u00a0 I became a student of God\u2019s Word when it came to this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know there are people right now who are maybe even pulling over the car and saying, \u201cI need to give my heart to the Lord right now.\u00a0 I\u2019ve never considered this.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been a follower of Christ for 40, 50, 10 years, whatever it is, but I\u2019m having such trouble in the area of finances.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLarry would say this, from Proverbs 10:22:\u00a0 \u201cThe blessing of the Lord brings wealth and He adds no sorrow (no trouble) to it.\u201d\u00a0 We have sorrow.\u00a0 When we have sorrow in this area of finance we\u2019ve got to do it His way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to believe there are those who are listening who do need to respond to the same God who tracked you down \u2013 the hound of heaven.\u00a0 They need to submit, yield, and give their lives to Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy encouragement to them is that regardless of your circumstances, regardless of what you\u2019ve done, it\u2019s not a matter of you cleaning up your act first.\u00a0 It\u2019s a matter of you coming to Christ in all of your disappointments and failures and dirt, and crying out for mercy, saying, \u201cLord Jesus, be merciful to me, a sinner.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo that person, Jesus says, \u201cI have come that you might have life and you might have it abundantly\u201d - that you would live life to the fullest.\u00a0 Christ didn\u2019t come just to get us into heaven, He came to put life in our soul and give us the ability, Kevin, of what happened in your life \u2013 to begin to look at life as multi-dimensional.\u00a0 It is much more than things and stuff and accomplishments.\u00a0 It really is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy encouragement is that if you\u2019ve not made that commitment that Kevin talked about, \u201cDon\u2019t let the sun go down today, or rise up tomorrow morning, before you\u2019ve made that commitment.\u00a0 Yield to Christ and give your life to Him.\u00a0 It will not mean that you sprout wings and become perfect, as Kevin has illustrated.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to have your moments of doubt, but you will become a new creature.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t mean that all of your problems instantly go away.\u00a0 In fact, you might still have to deal with a lot of consequences of decisions you\u2019ve made.\u00a0 But what it means is that you\u2019re not going to have to deal with those on your own.\u00a0 There is someone who will walk that path with you, who understands the suffering that may accompany some of those poor choices.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe would love to send you a book today that explains what it means to have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.\u00a0 If you\u2019re listening and was taken into custody and put in jail, he was not the only person to be locked in a jail cell that day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was a man that day, on February 10, 1988, who was just sentenced to a triple death sentence.\u00a0 They laughed and chuckled and said, \u201cKevin, you\u2019re going to go in and be his roommate.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I thought, \u201cWhoa!\u00a0 Whoa!\u00a0 Whoa!\u00a0 I\u2019m 120 pounds soaking wet.\u00a0 You can\u2019t do this!\u00a0 I\u2019m white collar, I\u2019m the boy wonder, I\u2019m the . . .\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019re going in there with him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo here I am in this cell, and here\u2019s this kid who is this young man who has nothing to live for.\u00a0 I just went in there thinking, \u201cOh my goodness.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt that point, I did the jailhouse prayer.\u00a0 The jailhouse prayer goes like this, \u201cGod?\u00a0 Get me out of here!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, April 22<sup>nd<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We will hear today how God answered Kevin Cross\u2019s jailhouse prayer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe story we\u2019re hearing this week sounds like something out of a TV episode or a movie or something, doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, our guest even said it was like a Grisham novel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kevin Cross joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>Kevin, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s good to be here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kevin is a former businessman.\u00a0 I say that because he worked in an accounting firm for over 17 years.\u00a0 He now works for a friend of ours, Crawford Lorritts, at Fellowship Bible Church in Roswell, Georgia, just outside of Atlanta.\u00a0 He\u2019s been married since 1993 and has two children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe has written a book called <em>Embezzlement:<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>A True Crime Story.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>You know, Kevin, you were nineteen years old working for the Broward County Sheriff\u2019s office.\u00a0 This was the guy who trained Al Pacino in how to be a gangster because he\u2019d already been around so many of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou as a nineteen and twenty year old ripped off the Broward County Sheriff\u2019s Department of $300,000, embezzling it, trading it, making money, and then living the high life.\u00a0 You got the mob involved to where your life was threatened.\u00a0 Your buddy\u2019s sister\u2019s life was in danger.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever said this to anyone on the broadcast, but I think you can handle it and I think you\u2019ll agree with it \u2013 to have gone to work for the Broward County Sheriff\u2019s Department and to have embezzled 300 grand, you were an <em>idiot<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, like I said, if you\u2019re going to be dumb, you had better be brave.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, seriously, Kevin, not that embezzlement ever makes sense, but the sheriff\u2019s department!?\u00a0 When the FBI came to your door, knocked on it, and read you rights, did all of that come crashing in at that point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 It did, it did.\u00a0 But, you know, I was still self-deceived, because here I am at the sheriff\u2019s office and they\u2019re ready to book me, and I\u2019m thinking, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I\u2019ll get my law school buddies to get me out of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your law school buddies!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 My law school buddies.\u00a0 I\u2019m still living a delusional life that I am still the center of.\u00a0 I am still my god.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was ready to crash and burn, because as they walked me into this pod \u2013 if you can imagine it, the sheriff had just constructed this multi-million dollar crime complex on the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale.\u00a0 If you\u2019ve ever seen it, it\u2019s a beautiful, decadent area.\u00a0 From the outside, the building looks beautiful.\u00a0 From the inside, it\u2019s very different.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo they walk you into this pod over-populated, with several hundred people in this pod, and there were several little rooms in the pod that were for solitary confinement.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So this was jail?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 This was jail.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey booked me with a million dollar bond.\u00a0 They didn\u2019t know how much I had stolen, so they\u2019d made the bond really high.\u00a0 They thought, \u201cWe don\u2019t want the guy to go to Brazil or to Mexico or to wherever he could flee to, so we\u2019re going to throw him in here and we\u2019re going to set the bond at a million dollars.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to ask you this question:\u00a0 Had you seen the sheriff yet, at this point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I had no plans to.\u00a0 I was scared silly.\u00a0 I was cocky, but still had the reality that if he saw me, that would be the last encounter.\u00a0 I betrayed him!\u00a0 I completely betrayed a man who hired me to be entrusted with something very precious \u2013 his accounts.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You pulled this off for a year and a half.\u00a0 Now you had been out of the county for a year and you\u2019d been in law school.\u00a0 How\u2019d you get found out? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, because I told the mob my scheme and I gave them the money, I guess I\u2019m thinking they ran out of that $50,000 plus a few extra thousand, they were probably thinking, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 <em>CrimeStoppers<\/em>.\u00a0 We could pick up a quick five grand.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, an anonymous tip turned me in.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know who did it, but I am so grateful that God used them to turn me in.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the time though, I can tell you, I wasn\u2019t thinking that way.\u00a0 I was thinking, \u201cI\u2019ll beat this!\u00a0 I\u2019ll beat this!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo they threw me in this jail cell in solitary confinement and I was thinking, \u201cYeah, that\u2019s good, put me in solitary confinement because I don\u2019t want to be with the rest of these criminals, these bad people.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said, \u201cOh, don\u2019t worry!\u00a0 We\u2019re going to put you some place in solitary confinement.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was a man that day, on February 10, 1988, who was just sentenced to a triple death sentence.\u00a0 This man had gone into a Wendy\u2019s restaurant and massacred his co-workers, and that very day he had been sentenced to death.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey had him sentenced to solitary confinement because he had nothing to live for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey laughed and chuckled and said, \u201cKevin, you\u2019re going to go in and be his roommate.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I thought, \u201cWhoa!\u00a0 Whoa!\u00a0 Whoa!\u00a0 I\u2019m 120 pounds soaking wet.\u00a0 You can\u2019t do this!\u00a0 I\u2019m white collar, I\u2019m the boy wonder, I\u2019m the . . .\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said, \u201cYou\u2019re going in there with him.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Seriously?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Seriously.\u00a0 They chuckled and laughed and I thought, \u201cIsn\u2019t that just jailhouse justice?\u201d\u00a0 I can imagine that maybe word got through and the sheriff said, \u201cLook, don\u2019t treat him with any more respect than anyone else.\u00a0 Matter of fact, this is probably the best place for him.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo here I am in this cell, about six foot by six foot.\u00a0 You can imagine this in your mind\u2019s eye, can\u2019t you?\u00a0 And here\u2019s this kid who is this young man who has nothing to live for.\u00a0 I just went in there thinking, \u201cOh my goodness.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt that point, I did the jailhouse prayer.\u00a0 The jailhouse prayer goes like this, \u201cGod?\u00a0 Get me out of here!\u00a0 Get me out of this jam!\u00a0 I\u2019ll do whatever it takes.\u00a0 I\u2019m not like the rest of these people.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry I got caught.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I was quiet for the first time.\u00a0 I heard everybody else praying the same prayer:\u00a0 \u201cLord, get us out of here.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been framed.\u00a0 We won\u2019t do this again.\u201d\u00a0 I thought, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I am no different from the rest of these folks.\u00a0 I need to come clean.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if you can imagine this little jail cell, unlike jails like in China where you\u2019d have little pieces Scripture and you\u2019d be hiding those in your hand, there were torn Bibles all over the place, thrown.\u00a0 You can imagine that an angry inmate had just thrown a Bible and ripped it.\u00a0 So I looked around the jail cell for little pieces of God\u2019s Word because I was hungry, very hungry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhere I had landed was the lowest any human being could land in America, I guess.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What did the murderer say to you when you came in?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not a word.\u00a0 Not a word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI liken it to Daniel being in the lion\u2019s den and I\u2019m sure those lions were just ready to pounce.\u00a0 That\u2019s the way I felt and I thought, \u201cOh man.\u201d\u00a0 In the corner of my eye I\u2019m trying to keep an eye on Him and out of the other corner of my eye look for a place I could be as far away from Him as possible.\u00a0 All the while, I\u2019m having this arm wrestling with God.\u00a0 I knew He was drawing me to Himself and He wanted me to come clean.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI picked up a piece of Scripture from the corner of the cell.\u00a0 It was Psalm 51.\u00a0 It was when David had just killed a man because he wanted his wife.\u00a0 David came clean with the Lord and he talks about his bones just aching and wasting away.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWow!\u00a0 I\u2019m having the same symptoms.\u00a0 Lord, I need to come clean.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s amazing.\u00a0 There are people listening right now who haven\u2019t done the awful crime that I have done, but they have felt their bones just aching away.\u00a0 I think of a woman who just recently confessed to me that she ran up $40,000 in credit card debt, and she didn\u2019t tell her husband.\u00a0 She said, \u201cI haven\u2019t even been able to come to church.\u00a0 I\u2019m stuck.\u00a0 I\u2019m in a difficult situation.\u00a0 I feel so much better confessing it.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I said, \u201cGod, I\u2019m sorry.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was amazing; for the first time in my life I had felt a peace and a freedom.\u00a0 Now, the ironic thing was I had never been in more trouble.\u00a0 I had never been in a place where my life was threatened more than it was right then.\u00a0 But I had a freedom, and I had a peace.\u00a0 I had hope after that prayer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How long were you in jail?\u00a0 When did you finally see one of your law school buddies or a lawyer or whoever came to see you?\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that first day I thought, \u201cI\u2019m in here forever.\u201d\u00a0 I mean, a million dollar bond?!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWho knows, maybe I\u2019m going to die between now and then.\u00a0 Amazingly, like in Daniel\u2019s case, God closed the mouths of the lions, and that man didn\u2019t touch me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Take us to that moment when the person most important to you walked through the jailhouse door \u2013 your dad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know, my dad had gotten me the position with the sheriff because he worked there.\u00a0 A few days later after the headline news and the newspapers came out with my mug shot, calling me this kid who betrayed the sheriff; this boy wonder and now look at him.\u00a0 Well, the doors opened \u2013 they were Serpico style doors \u2013 and the sheriff\u2019s office just went to a hush as they saw my dad. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe brought with him a handful of newspapers from several different locales.\u00a0 He plopped them on a large desk and said, \u201cThis is all I know about what my son did.\u201d\u00a0 You could hear a pin drop.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe turned around and walked out.\u00a0 He dressed up that day just like it was his last day of work because he knew he was going to have an appointment with the sheriff, and the sheriff would wag his finger at him and say, \u201cYou\u2019re going to lose your job!\u201d\u00a0 He knew that was going to happen.\u00a0 That, again, is that ripple effect.\u00a0 If my words have any weight today, I want to say this whole American dream thing \u2013 I was pursuing it and I didn\u2019t care who I hurt.\u00a0 I had no idea, though, that it was going to have such a ripple effect.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo it God\u2019s way.\u00a0 When we do money God\u2019s way, there\u2019s a peace and a pleasure and a hope, but when we do it the world\u2019s way, there is certain heartache.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So when your dad came into your cell, and saw you for the first time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 He saw me.\u00a0 He cried.\u00a0 I cried.\u00a0 Like a great dad, not only did he forgive me, but he blamed himself.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that just the way we are?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, \u201cNo, no, no, Dad.\u00a0 I pursued the way of the world, and this is exactly where God wants me.\u201d\u00a0 I had a peace in a jail cell.\u00a0 I was there for eight days until they lowered my bail to something we could muster up.\u00a0 Finally, on the eighth day, they came in and said, \u201cCross?\u00a0 Raymond K.?\u00a0 You\u2019ve been released.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI took an hour and went cell to cell, telling the inmates, telling these people in this pod number whatever that I had freedom.\u00a0 They said, \u201cYeah.\u00a0 You\u2019re walking out right now.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I said, \u201cNo, no, no, I got freedom eight days ago by giving my heart to the Lord, and you can have that freedom also.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey came back and said, \u201cCross, are you ready to go, or do you want to stay?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cJust give me a little bit more time.\u201d\u00a0 I went cell to cell, room to room, telling these folks about my newfound freedom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was an amazing thing because God had shown me that His way is so much sweeter.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, this is all with torn-up Scriptures that you found in the cell, but you had been raised in a home where you\u2019d heard the Word of God, you\u2019d gone to Christian schools, so you were really reaching back into the reservoir of what had been poured into your life as you cried out to the Lord.\u00a0 You had some foundation that you could reach back to, didn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 All of those Scriptures made sense.\u00a0 All those Scriptures came back, and I thought, \u201cWow!\u00a0 Here\u2019s the realness, the relevancy and the truth of God\u2019s Word.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I saw even more, as I was reading Proverbs; I was seeing my life in that <em>foolish<\/em> son.\u00a0 I was thinking, \u201cWow, I read that years ago and couldn\u2019t identify.\u00a0 Now I\u2019m reading it and I see the truth.\u00a0 I see the truth.\u00a0 And I also see the truth in forgiveness.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 But you\u2019re right, I drew a great deal upon that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So eight days after you were locked up, you made bail, but you still had a mountain to climb.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I returned as much as I could.\u00a0 I sold all the assets, but I still owed $100,000 to the sheriff . . . and my credit card.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019re working out restitution, trying to have them drop the charges if you pay it back, or what?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 They said, \u201cLook, if you pay it back, we\u2019ll give you fifteen years\u2019 probation.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, \u201cWow!\u00a0 Probation?\u00a0 I love that!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said, \u201cWell you\u2019re going to have to leave law school.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI don\u2019t care.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to go to jail!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cAre you sure?\u00a0 You\u2019ll be a felon.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI don\u2019t care!\u00a0 I\u2019ll take it.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to go back.\u201d\u00a0 You see, I was fearful.\u00a0 But God used that plea bargain; because, you see, if I paid back the money within five years, they would let me off.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You started paying back, but you were a hundred thousand short?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 A hundred thousand short, and with credit cards, too.\u00a0 And here\u2019s the thing with ill-gotten gain.\u00a0 I ran up my credit cards during this time.\u00a0 Can you imagine?\u00a0 I not only was stealing money from the sheriff, I was actually stealing money from my creditors!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was running up my credit cards without <em>any way<\/em> of paying it back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTalk about \u201cdumb.\u201d\u00a0 I got a whole big education.\u00a0 As a matter of fact, when I was doing this, I bought a house with negative amortization.\u00a0 I got a mortgage where I would owe more every month than I did when I first financed the house.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou might say, \u201cHow do you do that?\u201d\u00a0 Well, that\u2019s called creative financing.\u00a0 I decided to do that because I wanted a low payment.\u00a0 I violated every one of God\u2019s principles about finance.\u00a0 That\u2019s what I realized \u2013 there was so much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI realized, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I\u2019m going to pay back this money.\u201d\u00a0 So I got a job by day, making minimum payments on this $100,000.\u00a0 Now, at night, I needed a job making some grocery money and gas money.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, they let you out of jail to get a job to be able to make restitution.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\u00a0 They gave me a ninety day sentence and they said, \u201cLook, we\u2019ll let you out, but you\u2019re on probation.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to keep your nose clean; you\u2019ve got to pay the money back.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But, ninety days?\u00a0 One hundred grand?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How are you going to do that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I had five years to pay it back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 But it would be up to fifteen years, but I thought, \u201cThat\u2019s fifteen years.\u00a0 I\u2019m only twenty years old, twenty one.\u00a0 Fifteen years is like a lifetime.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to do everything I possibly can to pay this back sooner.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so, at night, I needed to get a job.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t get a job delivering pizzas because I didn\u2019t have adequate insurance on my car.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a kid who was in law school; most likely to succeed, and I can\u2019t get a job delivering pizzas.\u00a0 Talk about a reality check.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut there was one job that I could get:\u00a0 valet parking.\u00a0 Valet parking, where there was a permanent \u201cHelp Wanted\u201d sign at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Miami.\u00a0 The problem is, if you ever see a sign that permanently says \u201cHelp Wanted,\u201d there\u2019s a problem with that.\u00a0 It means somebody quits every night.\u00a0 And I know why.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs the crow flies, you had to run a mile from the ramp to the parking lot.\u00a0 Well, if you do a few miles like that, it\u2019s a great workout, but you don\u2019t want to go back and do it again tomorrow; especially for a dollar per car.\u00a0 But I didn\u2019t care.\u00a0 I was hungry, hungry for food even!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I was living in my car underneath this overpass in downtown Miami \u2013 talk about a kid who had fallen so hard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your parents didn\u2019t take you back in?\u00a0 Didn\u2019t give you a place to stay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, here\u2019s the thing.\u00a0 I was ashamed.\u00a0 I was like the prodigal.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t going back until God moved in my heart to do just that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs the prodigal, I wasn\u2019t going back yet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Had your dad lost his job?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, he didn\u2019t.\u00a0 Miraculously, he never lost his job.\u00a0 It was on the bubble there, and there were days he went in wondering, \u201cDo I still have a job?\u201d\u00a0 But he never got the pink slip, probably because I decided to say, \u201cHey, I owe.\u00a0 I did it.\u00a0 I\u2019m guilty.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe that diffused the whole anger against my dad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How long before you got the whole thing paid off?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Less than five years.\u00a0 But, here\u2019s the thing.\u00a0 I\u2019m valet parking at night, and I\u2019m still thinking, \u201cWow!\u201d\u00a0 A brand new Jaguar drives up to the ramp, and you know that was my thing.\u00a0 Money was my god.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cI\u2019m the next runner \u2013 the next valet parker.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe man gets out of the car, and he\u2019s a local celebrity, Dwight Lauderdale.\u00a0 He\u2019s the anchorman of Channel 10 News in Miami.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWow!\u00a0 OK, things are starting to change.\u00a0 OK, God.\u201d\u00a0 And I got into his Jaguar, his Jag-u-ar (I didn\u2019t know how to say it back then).\u00a0 I went to turn that little kitty cat on, and it was already on. Have you ever turned on a car that\u2019s on?\u00a0 Oh, it grinds.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt sounded like a dead cat.\u00a0 And when you do it to a Jaguar, it\u2019s really a cat.\u00a0 So, I put it into drive and sped away.\u00a0 I was trying to look cool and then I got in the car.\u00a0 If looks could kill, I wouldn\u2019t be here today, and if he was any faster, he would have pulled me out of the car.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was driving away and thinking, \u201cI\u2019m a loser.\u00a0 I\u2019m a loser.\u00a0 God, I gave my heart to you in a jail cell, and now I can\u2019t even drive a car?\u00a0 There\u2019s no hope, God.\u00a0 I have $100,000 in debt.\u00a0 I\u2019m living in my car underneath an exit ramp in downtown Miami.\u00a0 There can\u2019t be anything any worse than this.\u00a0 Maybe it didn\u2019t take.\u00a0 Maybe it didn\u2019t work.\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s better the other way.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was despairing, and I turned on the radio.\u00a0 Maybe like today, how some people might have stumbled upon this broadcast.\u00a0 I turned on the radio, and I needed to hear the rock (not rock \u2018n\u2019 roll).\u00a0 I kept changing the channel, changing the channel, until I heard this plain vanilla guy.\u00a0 It was Larry Burkett.\u00a0 He was talking about hope when you have no hope.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, \u201cThat\u2019s me.\u201d\u00a0 He talked about how many of us don\u2019t understand that what we\u2019ve been given is a gift to us.\u00a0 We\u2019re just stewards; we\u2019re just managers of His stuff.\u00a0 The earth is the Lord\u2019s and everything in it; the world and all who dwell in it.\u201d Psalm 24\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI never read that.\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 Some have even been taking God\u2019s stuff and embezzling it.\u201d\u00a0 I thought, \u201cThere\u2019s sky cam in the Jaguar.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cOf course,\u201d I thought, \u201che\u2019s an anchorman.\u00a0 I\u2019m being followed.\u201d\u00a0 So I pulled the car over, and he said, \u201cBut you can give your heart to the Lord right now.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI pulled the car over and I wept.\u00a0 I wept.\u00a0 I said, \u201cGod, I can\u2019t do this anymore.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe (Larry Burkett) mentioned Martin Luther.\u00a0 He said, \u201cThere are three conversions, Martin Luther would say:\u00a0 conversion of the heart, conversion of the mind, and conversion of the pocketbook.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, the heart and the mind I gave to the Lord in that jail cell with that Wendy\u2019s murderer.\u00a0\u00a0 But, you know, I\u2019d never given Him this area of my life \u2013 the area of finances.\u00a0 That area I gave to Him in that Jaguar, and I thought, \u201cOh, Lord, it\u2019s Yours.\u00a0 Lord, will You take it now?\u00a0 Will you just repair my life?\u00a0 I want to live for You.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe talked about how there are so many verses in God\u2019s Word that talk about money \u2013 2,350 verses!\u00a0 And He wants us to have peace in it.\u00a0 I became a student of God\u2019s Word when it came to this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know there are people right now who are maybe even pulling over the car and saying, \u201cI need to give my heart to the Lord right now.\u00a0 I\u2019ve never considered this.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been a follower of Christ for 40, 50, 10 years, whatever it is, but I\u2019m having such trouble in the area of finances.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLarry would say this, from Proverbs 10:22:\u00a0 \u201cThe blessing of the Lord brings wealth and He adds no sorrow (no trouble) to it.\u201d\u00a0 We have sorrow.\u00a0 When we have sorrow in this area of finance we\u2019ve got to do it His way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I have to believe there are those who are listening who do need to respond to the same God who tracked you down \u2013 the hound of heaven.\u00a0 They need to submit, yield, and give their lives to Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy encouragement to them is that regardless of your circumstances, regardless of what you\u2019ve done, it\u2019s not a matter of you cleaning up your act first.\u00a0 It\u2019s a matter of you coming to Christ in all of your disappointments and failures and dirt, and crying out for mercy, saying, \u201cLord Jesus, be merciful to me, a sinner.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo that person, Jesus says, \u201cI have come that you might have life and you might have it abundantly\u201d - that you would live life to the fullest.\u00a0 Christ didn\u2019t come just to get us into heaven, He came to put life in our soul and give us the ability, Kevin, of what happened in your life \u2013 to begin to look at life as multi-dimensional.\u00a0 It is much more than things and stuff and accomplishments.\u00a0 It really is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy encouragement is that if you\u2019ve not made that commitment that Kevin talked about, \u201cDon\u2019t let the sun go down today, or rise up tomorrow morning, before you\u2019ve made that commitment.\u00a0 Yield to Christ and give your life to Him.\u00a0 It will not mean that you sprout wings and become perfect, as Kevin has illustrated.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to have your moments of doubt, but you will become a new creature.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t mean that all of your problems instantly go away.\u00a0 In fact, you might still have to deal with a lot of consequences of decisions you\u2019ve made.\u00a0 But what it means is that you\u2019re not going to have to deal with those on your own.\u00a0 There is someone who will walk that path with you, who understands the suffering that may accompany some of those poor choices.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe would love to send you a book today that explains what it means to have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ.\u00a0 If you\u2019re listening and
