Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Kevin Cross joins us today to tell a real-life story of the danger of ill-gotten gains and the power of redemption.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I was thinking back to the series that you recorded several weeks ago on leaving a legacy, and I remember you talking about how the legacy we leave is really shaped by the little, sometimes seemingly inconsequential choices we make that can turn out to be huge in our lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s not to say that if we make bad choices those can\u2019t be turned around and redeemed, but a choice you make today can really leave a scar or a mark or a blemish on the legacy of your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right, Bob.\u00a0 There are consequences to our choices as you\u2019re going to hear from our guest on today\u2019s broadcast.\u00a0 Kevin Cross joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\u00a0 Kevin, welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s great to be here.\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kevin is a businessman, and was for almost 20 years.\u00a0 He works alongside a good friend of ours, Crawford Loritts, who is a pastor at Fellowship Bible Church in Atlanta, Georgia.\u00a0 He\u2019s been married since 1993, has two children, and has written a book that I am not going to tell you the name of the book, because it gives away the story.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut what I am going to ask you, Kevin, is one night the police raided a bar where you and a buddy had been fellowshipping, I guess, that evening, right?\u00a0 And afterwards you walked across the street and started fantasizing about a scheme that you had.\u00a0 What was the scheme?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 We were hatching a plan.\u00a0 You see, I really, truly was this hedonist, you know, seeking pleasure as a way of life, and now I\u2019ve discovered that seeking God\u2019s pleasure as a way of life, a Christian hedonist, is so much richer.\u00a0 But at the time I was so self-deceived.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA friend and I walked across the parking lot and we thought, \u201cYou know, our lives are a mess.\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019re kind of almost 20 years old\u00a0 \u2013 19 at the time \u2013 the world was in front of us, and we were stalled.\u00a0 We were stuck in this young adulthood.\u00a0 What could we do to make our mark on this world?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo this guy and I sat there, and I was working for a very powerful man at the time.\u00a0 I was just getting finished my fourth year of undergrad in accounting, because I knew the language of business is accounting and I had a scholarship to law school following that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 So you\u2019re 20 years old, wrapping up an accounting degree, working for a powerful man, and thinking, \u201cGee, I want to leave my mark.\u201d\u00a0 I mean it sounds like you\u2019re doing pretty well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Talk about this deception.\u00a0 If it\u2019s not a legacy of faith in God, it\u2019s a legacy that\u2019s really \u2013 it\u2019s one more, one more.\u00a0 You keep moving that yardstick and I still wasn\u2019t there, wasn\u2019t satisfied.\u00a0 You\u2019re right.\u00a0 If I had just looked at it and said, \u201cLook. In the world\u2019s eyes this is pretty successful.\u201d\u00a0 But I wasn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were living in Broward County, Florida.\u00a0 Everybody knows that county.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Home of the hanging chads, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 South Florida.\u00a0 Fort Lauderdale, going to the Wayne Huizenga School of Business.\u00a0 So, you\u2019re in a good school and you\u2019re on the right track to be able to do something significant, but . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were impatient.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was absolutely impatient.\u00a0 I wanted it now.\u00a0 And this is what I wanted:\u00a0 I had grown up in a Christian household, too.\u00a0 I had my ticket to Heaven, however it didn\u2019t really make much of a difference here on this planet, and I needed something more than just, well, eternal life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was deceived by the self-love.\u00a0 And so as I\u2019m working for the most powerful man, Nick Navarro, this sheriff, famous as Wyatt Earp \u2013 this guy taught Al Pacino how to act like a gangster in the movie <em>Scarface,<\/em> the 1980 horror action flick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The guy you worked with?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is the guy I worked for, Nick Navarro.\u00a0 Powerful man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was he a gangster?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well he was a gun-slinging sheriff and he would do drug-busts, gun in hand, lead the pack.\u00a0 He was the Clint Eastwood of the real-time sheriffs, and I thought, \u201cWow, I hit the big league.\u00a0 I\u2019m working for him and I\u2019m his youngest accountant.\u201d\u00a0 And here I am, working for him.\u00a0 I\u2019m in charge of this huge account.\u00a0 This same guy Chuck Norris calls \u201cUncle.\u201d\u00a0 This man is still a Who\u2019s Who, and I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWow, maybe he\u2019ll notice me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, I had this deception of my soul.\u00a0 I had a hunger.\u00a0 I had a longing in my soul that was a poverty, but it could only be filled with God\u2019s touch.\u00a0 It couldn\u2019t be filled with money.\u00a0 And that\u2019s exactly what happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019re hatching a scheme, working for the Sheriff of Broward County, Florida.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 In the parking lot.\u00a0 Midnight.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And what\u2019s your scheme?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019re saying, \u201cHey, look.\u00a0 What can we do?\u00a0 Talk about a legacy.\u00a0 We wanted a legacy of fame and fortune and what this world had to offer.\u00a0 That\u2019s the legacy we wanted to acquire.\u00a0 We required it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe thought, \u201cWell, I\u2019m in charge of this huge account of stale money.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s almost an oxymoron, stale money, right?\u00a0 And so here I\u2019m in charge of this account.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well now, wait.\u00a0 What\u2019s stale money?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Stale money is money that has been put up as deposits for evictions and for little things that the city or the county does on behalf of its people.\u00a0 So you give $100 to the Sheriff and they do their thing and you have $13, $5 left.\u00a0 Well, you\u2019re thinking, \u201cWell, it cost $100, but there\u2019s a little bit left over.\u201d\u00a0 And so there were hundreds, even thousands of these accounts with this small amount of money in it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How much total?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, there was probably $1 million in there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh my goodness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 And back in the 80s that\u2019s a lot of money.\u00a0 Even today!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Even today.\u00a0 Yeah!\u00a0 C\u2019mon.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWell let me do the right thing.\u201d\u00a0 And you know, it\u2019s amazing how you plant the seeds of deception.\u00a0 You plant these bad seeds; they start to sprout.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cI\u2019ll just take the money and I\u2019ll give it to the people who are the rightful owners.\u201d\u00a0 And that wasn\u2019t satisfying.\u00a0 I got kind of reprimanded.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s not what we do, because after ten years it goes to the Sheriff\u2019s office and they get to buy airplanes and stuff.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, so you were going back and trying to find the folks who were owed this money.\u00a0 They\u2019d paid too much; you\u2019re going to give it back to them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I\u2019m a boy scout.\u00a0 But I only did that \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Robin Hood.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It began with this innocent thing \u2013 \u201cHey, I want to give the money back so I can be known.\u00a0 I can be the center of attention.\u201d\u00a0 And you see, it wasn\u2019t happening fast enough.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was the god of my life, and I needed to be worshipped, and if I wasn\u2019t, then I took the next step and the next step was, \u201cWell the Sheriff doesn\u2019t deserve to get this money back.\u00a0 I\u2019ll invest it.\u00a0 I\u2019ll show him.\u00a0 I\u2019ll show him.\u201d\u00a0 I made $50,000 in one night.\u00a0 And now let me caveat this story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.\u00a0 You made 50 grand in one night, investing the money?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Investing the money.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How\u2019d you get it out of there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I made checks out through a series of salami slicing.\u00a0 It\u2019s an intricate embezzlement scheme that takes small bits of information, almost like rounding off the pennies on a check, and the half-cents, rolling them all into one.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo that little formula I used to get money out of the Sheriff\u2019s bank account \u2013 and now it sounds like I\u2019m just glamorizing this deceptiveness.\u00a0 Well let me tell you, my story is not just a true crime story; it is a redemption story.\u00a0 So no matter what glamour I show, what God did with my life that was completely broken is amazing, and that\u2019s the story he has for you today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you stole several thousand dollars the first time.\u00a0 How much exactly?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Probably $10,000.\u00a0 Or $8,000.\u00a0 And then $15,000.\u00a0 And then, when I invested in this stock and it made $50,000 in one night, it was like it fed this ego, and I almost thought, \u201cI am the boy wonder.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So what did you do with the gain?\u00a0 I mean, did you put it back in the Sheriff\u2019s fund so he could buy a nicer plane?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, here was my scheme.\u00a0 I decided, \u201cHey, I\u2019ll just take the return on investment.\u00a0 I\u2019ll give him back the principal.\u201d\u00a0 Well those seeds started to sprout and I thought, \u201cWell, he doesn\u2019t deserve it.\u00a0 I deserve it.\u00a0 I won it.\u00a0 I am the center of my existence.\u201d\u00a0 And so I decided, \u201cI\u2019m not going to give it back.\u201d\u00a0 I gave back some and I took back some.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI kept going, and here\u2019s the thing with ill-gotten gains.\u00a0 They don\u2019t profit.\u00a0 I would spend it.\u00a0 I kept spending it.\u00a0 I had an insatiable appetite to use these ill-gotten gains to bring pleasure to myself, to see if it was truly satisfying.\u00a0 And what I found out was this:\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t satisfy long term.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now you\u2019re 20, 21 years old at this point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m 19, and throughout the scheme I was 20, almost 21.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you got tens of thousands of dollars rolling your way?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And what are you spending it on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was spending it on fast times.\u00a0 We were going out to eat.\u00a0 I spent $1,000 at one night at a restaurant, and it was satisfying for a few hours, but that next day, I tell you, the heartache was so bitter, and I had to keep going back to the source, just like sin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking of Ecclesiastes chapter 2 where Solomon had all of this money and he\u2019s out trying to fill the hole in his own heart by, \u201cI\u2019ll buy some more vineyards and I\u2019ll buy some this and I\u2019ll buy some that.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s really where you were, trying to fill the hole in your heart by thinking stuff is going to satisfy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 There are so many people today, too, and maybe they\u2019ll never steal money, but with this whole real estate debacle that we saw in the last several years, where \u201cIf I can just acquire a little bit more and flip them, and then get more,\u201c\u00a0 and then all of a sudden caught up in that frenzy because they know their heart desires something more.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI desired more than God, and the craziness of that thought is, God is the only one that can truly satisfy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you ever thinking, \u201cThere will come a point where I\u2019m going to shut this thing down and go back to normal.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Every time was my last time.\u00a0 And then that\u2019s kind of the heartache or the mantra of the embezzler.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, it\u2019s an addiction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were addicted to the roller coaster of not getting caught, the adrenaline and the rush of the game, and then you got to spend it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah.\u00a0 And the thing is, you can\u2019t talk about it much.\u00a0 So that\u2019s hard for me.\u00a0 I have a big mouth.\u00a0 So I was going to Christian school \u2013 here\u2019s a kid in Christian school who had been raised in a Christian family, and I still didn\u2019t know Jesus Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere I\u2019m trying to kind of live this lie, and I\u2019m taking my friends out to night clubs and they\u2019re going, \u201cWait a second, Kev.\u00a0 We know you.\u00a0 You\u2019re a starving student.\u00a0 There\u2019s no way you can afford to buy us drinks and buy a round of drinks for the bar.\u00a0 What are you doing?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I finally one night, in a drunken stupor, I told \u2013 I spilled my guts, so to speak, to my friends.\u00a0 And I joke with -- My friends from Christian school were from the Mob.\u00a0 See, the Mob\u2019s kids all go to Christian schools \u2013 that\u2019s my theory \u2013 because they want to keep them out of trouble.\u00a0 So they send them to Christian schools so they won\u2019t turn out like them.\u00a0 Well, it just so happened that a couple of my friends were Mob kids, and these were the guys who had the fast cars and they had the girls.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Serious Mob kids, gangsters.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, gangsters.\u00a0 And of course we joked about it, because we\u2019re high school kids.\u00a0 We\u2019re going, \u201cYeah, sure,\u201d but they had the Porsches and the Mercedes and the Corvettes, and we were enamored by these guys, because they had what we thought was really true pleasure of this world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So did your parents have any sense that you were ripping off the Sheriff\u2019s Department?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 None whatsoever.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did they know you were spending cash -- $1000 dinners, etc.?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Had no idea.\u00a0 And here\u2019s what we do when we\u2019re sinning:\u00a0 we ostracize.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to go home, so I spent many nights off, out of my parent\u2019s household.\u00a0 They\u2019re wondering about me and I\u2019m this prodigal son, and they\u2019re praying for me.\u00a0 The further I\u2019m getting into this debacle, the further I\u2019m drawing myself away from them.\u00a0 Talk about the ripple effect; you talked about legacy.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 My father got me the job.\u00a0 He introduced me to the Sheriff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, while we\u2019re sinning, we don\u2019t realize that the ripple effect is going to hurt other people, and it\u2019s so much of a ripple effect.\u00a0 There are people listening right now, and they\u2019re ready to compromise.\u00a0 I get calls and emails daily of folks who have compromised, whether it\u2019s filling out a bogus loan application or whether they\u2019re going to go cheat on their taxes or what have you, and they don\u2019t realize the ripple effect, how it\u2019s going to hurt their family.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just going to affect them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So give us an idea of how many months this lasted and how much money you embezzled.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I worked for the Sheriff for about a year-and-a-half.\u00a0 I moved into action, and I started when I was 19, so I left there about a year-and-a-half later, right before law school, because I got the job my last year of undergrad so that I would have some money so I could go to law school.\u00a0 But what I tasted on that last year of undergrad was this money that tasted so good, and I knew if I got more and more of it I would finally be satisfied.\u00a0 So it took me about a year-and-a-half to have the entire plan hatched and moving forward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And how much money over that year-and-a-half did you either siphon out or invest?\u00a0 How much money are we talking about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 $300,000 I stole from the Sheriff of Broward Country.\u00a0 And here\u2019s the thing:\u00a0 If you\u2019re going to be dumb you better be brave, because I was stealing from the wrong guy.\u00a0 Not only \u2013 and that\u2019s from a non-Christian standpoint.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you never got caught while you were working there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Never got caught.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you ever come close to getting caught?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, when I told my friends in the Mob what I was doing, they said, \u201cOK, look, are you going to cut us in?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhat do you mean, cut you in?\u201d\u00a0 They said, \u201cYeah, cut us in.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, I\u2019ll buy you a meal or some more drinks.\u201d\u00a0 And they said, \u201cWhat?\u00a0 No. No.\u201d\u00a0 So a couple few days later, I got a knock at the door from some guys with thick Italian accents from New York, and I thought \u201cWhat\u2019s goin\u2019 on?\u201d\u00a0 They said, \u201cKevin Cross?\u201d and I was so full of myself I said, \u201cYes, here I am.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said, \u201cGet in your car.\u201d My object of success was this Saab, was this brand-new sparkling Saab.\u00a0 And they said, \u201cGet in your car,\u201d and they drove, and they desecrated this god of mine.\u00a0 And they were driving and bumping into stuff and slapping me around, and they said, \u201cYou don\u2019t do work on our turf unless you tell us.\u201d\u00a0 I go, \u201cWhat do you mean, work on your turf?\u00a0 I\u2019m just . . .\u201d They said, \u201cWe know what you\u2019re doing.\u00a0 You\u2019re stealing money.\u00a0 Now we want $5,000 a month and $50,000 tonight.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t do it, your friend who is helping you do this in the bank, his little sister is being watched right now, and we\u2019re going to kill her.\u201d\u00a0 At that point I knew I was in over my head.\u00a0 What I didn\u2019t know was that God was going to use that in a powerful way to shake my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So what happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that night I said, well, we\u2019ve got this elaborate scheme to tell these guys, \u201cLook, the IRS has our money; we can\u2019t give it to you.\u201d\u00a0 And of course they picked us up in this limo, this stretch limo, and I didn\u2019t recognize any of the guys \u2013 there was another guy . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So it truly was something out of the gangster movie, then.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, it was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Stretch limo, Italian accent, threatening lives, cash on the barrelhead now.\u00a0 I mean, this could be a movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, this reads like a Grisham.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 A Clancy.\u00a0 And here I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWow, I\u2019m way in over my head.\u00a0 I thought I was just stealing a little bit of money and going to get away with it.\u201d\u00a0 But now I thought, \u201cOkay, stop it. Stop it.\u00a0 Got to get out of this mess, and the mess is, these guys want something.\u00a0 We\u2019ll pacify them and then we\u2019ll move on.\u00a0 I\u2019ve learned my lesson.\u00a0 I\u2019ve learned my lesson to not steal on the wrong turf.\u201d\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t the lesson that I was actually sinning against God.\u00a0 But that comes later in the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so here I am.\u00a0 They picked us up.\u00a0 I showed them that our money had been seized by the IRS, and I developed this scheme \u2013 had a letter made, and they ripped up the letter in front of us.\u00a0 They said, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 Not only do we want all the money in your pockets right now, but now we want an extra $50,000 and $5,000 a month, or we\u2019re not only going to kill your friend\u2019s little sister, we\u2019re going to kill you guys.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo my little scheme couldn\u2019t even get by the Mob.\u00a0 So we went back and we actually stole more money, because here\u2019s the thing:\u00a0 I spent all the money that I had stolen up to that point.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even have $50,000 to give to these guys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had stolen $300,000 and you didn\u2019t have $50,000.\u00a0 Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Squandered it.\u00a0 Squandered it.\u00a0 And most people think, \u201cIf I\u2019d just won the lottery I\u2019d have money.\u00a0 I\u2019d give to a great ministry, I\u2019d give to this.\u201d\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 The deception is this:\u00a0 When you\u2019re not doing things God\u2019s way, you\u2019re not going to do it God\u2019s way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo here I am, I\u2019m in this limo, I said, \u201cOkay, we\u2019ll give them the money.\u201d\u00a0 So the next day I went to the bank and took money out.\u00a0 I met him in a hotel on a 12<sup>th<\/sup> floor someplace, and I had to bring the money and put it in a <em>Wall Street Journal.<\/em>\u00a0 It reads right out of a spy novel.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI brought it up there.\u00a0 I\u2019m scared for my life.\u00a0 I gave them the money and they said, \u201cDon\u2019t move or we\u2019ll kill you,\u201d and I thought, \u201cOh, great.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to kill me anyway.\u201d\u00a0 And so, to make a long story even longer, I finally, I got out of there and I thought, \u201cOkay, I\u2019m going to leave this job and I\u2019m going to go to law school and I\u2019ll leave it all behind me, because I know I have a new horizon.\u00a0 Okay, this is a bad chapter in my life, but I\u2019m going to go forward.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo here I am in law school and I\u2019m thinking things are going well, and see, these seeds that I had sown before law school \u2013 I met some unsavory fellows in law school, and I ended up doing homework for them, which is called moral turpitude.\u00a0 You\u2019re not allowed to do that, even in law school.\u00a0 People might laugh.\u00a0 So I was making $200 a week cash, and I\u2019m thinking,\u201dOkay, God, this is great.\u00a0 I\u2019m making $200.\u00a0 I am the boy wonder once again.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAbout a year into law school I got a knock at the door.\u00a0 It was the FBI and the Sheriff\u2019s deputies, and they said, \u201cYou have a right to remain silent.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWait a second, I\u2019m in law school now.\u00a0 I\u2019m protected.\u00a0 I have my brethren.\u00a0 They\u2019ll get me out of this.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo they put me in the squad car, took me to the jail, and they said, \u201cWe want you to tell your whole story.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cNo, with all due respect,\u201d you know, I\u2019m still cocky, \u201cI need to talk to a lawyer.\u201d\u00a0 I saw too many crime movies, crime shows, alright?\u00a0 And so here I am, ready to be booked, and the next time that I would be just faced with this situation where God would get my attention.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I\u2019m not sure what there is to say at the end of that, but I am thinking about a passage in Galatians 6.\u00a0 It reminds us, \u201cDo not be deceived.\u00a0 God is not mocked, for whatever one sows that will he also reap.\u00a0 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption.\u00a0 But the one who sows to the Spirit will reap from the Spirit eternal life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it goes on to talk about not growing weary in doing good, and I think, frankly, that\u2019s where most of our listeners are right now, is in need of being reminded, don\u2019t be weary about doing good, for in due time you will reap the result of you sowing what is good.\u00a0 The real lesson however today is, if you\u2019re sowing seeds to the flesh, even in secret, God will not be mocked.\u00a0 There may be a knock at the door.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, and obviously the story is not over.\u00a0 In fact, Kevin, you talk in the book about how God did a dramatic turnaround in But it might, for a season.","meta_box":{"show_notes":"","transcript_url":"https:\/\/transcript.familylifetoday.com\/fl2011-04-21.pdf","transcript_content":"<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 While they were both still young men, Kevin Cross and a friend found themselves in a place where they could make some easy money, and they were hooked.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s the thing with ill-gotten gains.\u00a0 They don\u2019t profit.\u00a0 I would spend it.\u00a0 I kept spending it.\u00a0 I had an insatiable appetite to use these ill-gotten gains to bring pleasure to myself and see if it was truly satisfying.\u00a0 What I found out was this: it doesn\u2019t satisfy long term.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLifeToday<\/em> for Thursday, April 21<sup>st<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Kevin Cross joins us today to tell a real-life story of the danger of ill-gotten gains and the power of redemption.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I was thinking back to the series that you recorded several weeks ago on leaving a legacy, and I remember you talking about how the legacy we leave is really shaped by the little, sometimes seemingly inconsequential choices we make that can turn out to be huge in our lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s not to say that if we make bad choices those can\u2019t be turned around and redeemed, but a choice you make today can really leave a scar or a mark or a blemish on the legacy of your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right, Bob.\u00a0 There are consequences to our choices as you\u2019re going to hear from our guest on today\u2019s broadcast.\u00a0 Kevin Cross joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\u00a0 Kevin, welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s great to be here.\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Kevin is a businessman, and was for almost 20 years.\u00a0 He works alongside a good friend of ours, Crawford Loritts, who is a pastor at Fellowship Bible Church in Atlanta, Georgia.\u00a0 He\u2019s been married since 1993, has two children, and has written a book that I am not going to tell you the name of the book, because it gives away the story.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut what I am going to ask you, Kevin, is one night the police raided a bar where you and a buddy had been fellowshipping, I guess, that evening, right?\u00a0 And afterwards you walked across the street and started fantasizing about a scheme that you had.\u00a0 What was the scheme?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 We were hatching a plan.\u00a0 You see, I really, truly was this hedonist, you know, seeking pleasure as a way of life, and now I\u2019ve discovered that seeking God\u2019s pleasure as a way of life, a Christian hedonist, is so much richer.\u00a0 But at the time I was so self-deceived.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA friend and I walked across the parking lot and we thought, \u201cYou know, our lives are a mess.\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019re kind of almost 20 years old\u00a0 \u2013 19 at the time \u2013 the world was in front of us, and we were stalled.\u00a0 We were stuck in this young adulthood.\u00a0 What could we do to make our mark on this world?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo this guy and I sat there, and I was working for a very powerful man at the time.\u00a0 I was just getting finished my fourth year of undergrad in accounting, because I knew the language of business is accounting and I had a scholarship to law school following that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\u00a0 So you\u2019re 20 years old, wrapping up an accounting degree, working for a powerful man, and thinking, \u201cGee, I want to leave my mark.\u201d\u00a0 I mean it sounds like you\u2019re doing pretty well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Talk about this deception.\u00a0 If it\u2019s not a legacy of faith in God, it\u2019s a legacy that\u2019s really \u2013 it\u2019s one more, one more.\u00a0 You keep moving that yardstick and I still wasn\u2019t there, wasn\u2019t satisfied.\u00a0 You\u2019re right.\u00a0 If I had just looked at it and said, \u201cLook. In the world\u2019s eyes this is pretty successful.\u201d\u00a0 But I wasn\u2019t.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were living in Broward County, Florida.\u00a0 Everybody knows that county.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Home of the hanging chads, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 South Florida.\u00a0 Fort Lauderdale, going to the Wayne Huizenga School of Business.\u00a0 So, you\u2019re in a good school and you\u2019re on the right track to be able to do something significant, but . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were impatient.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was absolutely impatient.\u00a0 I wanted it now.\u00a0 And this is what I wanted:\u00a0 I had grown up in a Christian household, too.\u00a0 I had my ticket to Heaven, however it didn\u2019t really make much of a difference here on this planet, and I needed something more than just, well, eternal life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was deceived by the self-love.\u00a0 And so as I\u2019m working for the most powerful man, Nick Navarro, this sheriff, famous as Wyatt Earp \u2013 this guy taught Al Pacino how to act like a gangster in the movie <em>Scarface,<\/em> the 1980 horror action flick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The guy you worked with?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is the guy I worked for, Nick Navarro.\u00a0 Powerful man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was he a gangster?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well he was a gun-slinging sheriff and he would do drug-busts, gun in hand, lead the pack.\u00a0 He was the Clint Eastwood of the real-time sheriffs, and I thought, \u201cWow, I hit the big league.\u00a0 I\u2019m working for him and I\u2019m his youngest accountant.\u201d\u00a0 And here I am, working for him.\u00a0 I\u2019m in charge of this huge account.\u00a0 This same guy Chuck Norris calls \u201cUncle.\u201d\u00a0 This man is still a Who\u2019s Who, and I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWow, maybe he\u2019ll notice me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, I had this deception of my soul.\u00a0 I had a hunger.\u00a0 I had a longing in my soul that was a poverty, but it could only be filled with God\u2019s touch.\u00a0 It couldn\u2019t be filled with money.\u00a0 And that\u2019s exactly what happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019re hatching a scheme, working for the Sheriff of Broward County, Florida.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 In the parking lot.\u00a0 Midnight.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And what\u2019s your scheme?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, we\u2019re saying, \u201cHey, look.\u00a0 What can we do?\u00a0 Talk about a legacy.\u00a0 We wanted a legacy of fame and fortune and what this world had to offer.\u00a0 That\u2019s the legacy we wanted to acquire.\u00a0 We required it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe thought, \u201cWell, I\u2019m in charge of this huge account of stale money.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s almost an oxymoron, stale money, right?\u00a0 And so here I\u2019m in charge of this account.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well now, wait.\u00a0 What\u2019s stale money?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Stale money is money that has been put up as deposits for evictions and for little things that the city or the county does on behalf of its people.\u00a0 So you give $100 to the Sheriff and they do their thing and you have $13, $5 left.\u00a0 Well, you\u2019re thinking, \u201cWell, it cost $100, but there\u2019s a little bit left over.\u201d\u00a0 And so there were hundreds, even thousands of these accounts with this small amount of money in it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How much total?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, there was probably $1 million in there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh my goodness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 And back in the 80s that\u2019s a lot of money.\u00a0 Even today!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Even today.\u00a0 Yeah!\u00a0 C\u2019mon.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWell let me do the right thing.\u201d\u00a0 And you know, it\u2019s amazing how you plant the seeds of deception.\u00a0 You plant these bad seeds; they start to sprout.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cI\u2019ll just take the money and I\u2019ll give it to the people who are the rightful owners.\u201d\u00a0 And that wasn\u2019t satisfying.\u00a0 I got kind of reprimanded.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s not what we do, because after ten years it goes to the Sheriff\u2019s office and they get to buy airplanes and stuff.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, so you were going back and trying to find the folks who were owed this money.\u00a0 They\u2019d paid too much; you\u2019re going to give it back to them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I\u2019m a boy scout.\u00a0 But I only did that \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Robin Hood.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It began with this innocent thing \u2013 \u201cHey, I want to give the money back so I can be known.\u00a0 I can be the center of attention.\u201d\u00a0 And you see, it wasn\u2019t happening fast enough.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was the god of my life, and I needed to be worshipped, and if I wasn\u2019t, then I took the next step and the next step was, \u201cWell the Sheriff doesn\u2019t deserve to get this money back.\u00a0 I\u2019ll invest it.\u00a0 I\u2019ll show him.\u00a0 I\u2019ll show him.\u201d\u00a0 I made $50,000 in one night.\u00a0 And now let me caveat this story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.\u00a0 You made 50 grand in one night, investing the money?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Investing the money.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How\u2019d you get it out of there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I made checks out through a series of salami slicing.\u00a0 It\u2019s an intricate embezzlement scheme that takes small bits of information, almost like rounding off the pennies on a check, and the half-cents, rolling them all into one.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo that little formula I used to get money out of the Sheriff\u2019s bank account \u2013 and now it sounds like I\u2019m just glamorizing this deceptiveness.\u00a0 Well let me tell you, my story is not just a true crime story; it is a redemption story.\u00a0 So no matter what glamour I show, what God did with my life that was completely broken is amazing, and that\u2019s the story he has for you today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you stole several thousand dollars the first time.\u00a0 How much exactly?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Probably $10,000.\u00a0 Or $8,000.\u00a0 And then $15,000.\u00a0 And then, when I invested in this stock and it made $50,000 in one night, it was like it fed this ego, and I almost thought, \u201cI am the boy wonder.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So what did you do with the gain?\u00a0 I mean, did you put it back in the Sheriff\u2019s fund so he could buy a nicer plane?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, here was my scheme.\u00a0 I decided, \u201cHey, I\u2019ll just take the return on investment.\u00a0 I\u2019ll give him back the principal.\u201d\u00a0 Well those seeds started to sprout and I thought, \u201cWell, he doesn\u2019t deserve it.\u00a0 I deserve it.\u00a0 I won it.\u00a0 I am the center of my existence.\u201d\u00a0 And so I decided, \u201cI\u2019m not going to give it back.\u201d\u00a0 I gave back some and I took back some.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI kept going, and here\u2019s the thing with ill-gotten gains.\u00a0 They don\u2019t profit.\u00a0 I would spend it.\u00a0 I kept spending it.\u00a0 I had an insatiable appetite to use these ill-gotten gains to bring pleasure to myself, to see if it was truly satisfying.\u00a0 And what I found out was this:\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t satisfy long term.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now you\u2019re 20, 21 years old at this point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m 19, and throughout the scheme I was 20, almost 21.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you got tens of thousands of dollars rolling your way?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And what are you spending it on?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was spending it on fast times.\u00a0 We were going out to eat.\u00a0 I spent $1,000 at one night at a restaurant, and it was satisfying for a few hours, but that next day, I tell you, the heartache was so bitter, and I had to keep going back to the source, just like sin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking of Ecclesiastes chapter 2 where Solomon had all of this money and he\u2019s out trying to fill the hole in his own heart by, \u201cI\u2019ll buy some more vineyards and I\u2019ll buy some this and I\u2019ll buy some that.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s really where you were, trying to fill the hole in your heart by thinking stuff is going to satisfy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 There are so many people today, too, and maybe they\u2019ll never steal money, but with this whole real estate debacle that we saw in the last several years, where \u201cIf I can just acquire a little bit more and flip them, and then get more,\u201c\u00a0 and then all of a sudden caught up in that frenzy because they know their heart desires something more.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI desired more than God, and the craziness of that thought is, God is the only one that can truly satisfy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you ever thinking, \u201cThere will come a point where I\u2019m going to shut this thing down and go back to normal.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Every time was my last time.\u00a0 And then that\u2019s kind of the heartache or the mantra of the embezzler.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, it\u2019s an addiction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh it is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were addicted to the roller coaster of not getting caught, the adrenaline and the rush of the game, and then you got to spend it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah.\u00a0 And the thing is, you can\u2019t talk about it much.\u00a0 So that\u2019s hard for me.\u00a0 I have a big mouth.\u00a0 So I was going to Christian school \u2013 here\u2019s a kid in Christian school who had been raised in a Christian family, and I still didn\u2019t know Jesus Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere I\u2019m trying to kind of live this lie, and I\u2019m taking my friends out to night clubs and they\u2019re going, \u201cWait a second, Kev.\u00a0 We know you.\u00a0 You\u2019re a starving student.\u00a0 There\u2019s no way you can afford to buy us drinks and buy a round of drinks for the bar.\u00a0 What are you doing?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd I finally one night, in a drunken stupor, I told \u2013 I spilled my guts, so to speak, to my friends.\u00a0 And I joke with -- My friends from Christian school were from the Mob.\u00a0 See, the Mob\u2019s kids all go to Christian schools \u2013 that\u2019s my theory \u2013 because they want to keep them out of trouble.\u00a0 So they send them to Christian schools so they won\u2019t turn out like them.\u00a0 Well, it just so happened that a couple of my friends were Mob kids, and these were the guys who had the fast cars and they had the girls.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Serious Mob kids, gangsters.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, gangsters.\u00a0 And of course we joked about it, because we\u2019re high school kids.\u00a0 We\u2019re going, \u201cYeah, sure,\u201d but they had the Porsches and the Mercedes and the Corvettes, and we were enamored by these guys, because they had what we thought was really true pleasure of this world.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So did your parents have any sense that you were ripping off the Sheriff\u2019s Department?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 None whatsoever.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did they know you were spending cash -- $1000 dinners, etc.?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Had no idea.\u00a0 And here\u2019s what we do when we\u2019re sinning:\u00a0 we ostracize.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t want to go home, so I spent many nights off, out of my parent\u2019s household.\u00a0 They\u2019re wondering about me and I\u2019m this prodigal son, and they\u2019re praying for me.\u00a0 The further I\u2019m getting into this debacle, the further I\u2019m drawing myself away from them.\u00a0 Talk about the ripple effect; you talked about legacy.\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 My father got me the job.\u00a0 He introduced me to the Sheriff. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, while we\u2019re sinning, we don\u2019t realize that the ripple effect is going to hurt other people, and it\u2019s so much of a ripple effect.\u00a0 There are people listening right now, and they\u2019re ready to compromise.\u00a0 I get calls and emails daily of folks who have compromised, whether it\u2019s filling out a bogus loan application or whether they\u2019re going to go cheat on their taxes or what have you, and they don\u2019t realize the ripple effect, how it\u2019s going to hurt their family.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just going to affect them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So give us an idea of how many months this lasted and how much money you embezzled.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I worked for the Sheriff for about a year-and-a-half.\u00a0 I moved into action, and I started when I was 19, so I left there about a year-and-a-half later, right before law school, because I got the job my last year of undergrad so that I would have some money so I could go to law school.\u00a0 But what I tasted on that last year of undergrad was this money that tasted so good, and I knew if I got more and more of it I would finally be satisfied.\u00a0 So it took me about a year-and-a-half to have the entire plan hatched and moving forward.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And how much money over that year-and-a-half did you either siphon out or invest?\u00a0 How much money are we talking about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 $300,000 I stole from the Sheriff of Broward Country.\u00a0 And here\u2019s the thing:\u00a0 If you\u2019re going to be dumb you better be brave, because I was stealing from the wrong guy.\u00a0 Not only \u2013 and that\u2019s from a non-Christian standpoint.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you never got caught while you were working there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Never got caught.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you ever come close to getting caught?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, when I told my friends in the Mob what I was doing, they said, \u201cOK, look, are you going to cut us in?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhat do you mean, cut you in?\u201d\u00a0 They said, \u201cYeah, cut us in.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cWell, I\u2019ll buy you a meal or some more drinks.\u201d\u00a0 And they said, \u201cWhat?\u00a0 No. No.\u201d\u00a0 So a couple few days later, I got a knock at the door from some guys with thick Italian accents from New York, and I thought \u201cWhat\u2019s goin\u2019 on?\u201d\u00a0 They said, \u201cKevin Cross?\u201d and I was so full of myself I said, \u201cYes, here I am.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey said, \u201cGet in your car.\u201d My object of success was this Saab, was this brand-new sparkling Saab.\u00a0 And they said, \u201cGet in your car,\u201d and they drove, and they desecrated this god of mine.\u00a0 And they were driving and bumping into stuff and slapping me around, and they said, \u201cYou don\u2019t do work on our turf unless you tell us.\u201d\u00a0 I go, \u201cWhat do you mean, work on your turf?\u00a0 I\u2019m just . . .\u201d They said, \u201cWe know what you\u2019re doing.\u00a0 You\u2019re stealing money.\u00a0 Now we want $5,000 a month and $50,000 tonight.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t do it, your friend who is helping you do this in the bank, his little sister is being watched right now, and we\u2019re going to kill her.\u201d\u00a0 At that point I knew I was in over my head.\u00a0 What I didn\u2019t know was that God was going to use that in a powerful way to shake my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So what happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that night I said, well, we\u2019ve got this elaborate scheme to tell these guys, \u201cLook, the IRS has our money; we can\u2019t give it to you.\u201d\u00a0 And of course they picked us up in this limo, this stretch limo, and I didn\u2019t recognize any of the guys \u2013 there was another guy . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So it truly was something out of the gangster movie, then.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, it was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Stretch limo, Italian accent, threatening lives, cash on the barrelhead now.\u00a0 I mean, this could be a movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, this reads like a Grisham.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 A Clancy.\u00a0 And here I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWow, I\u2019m way in over my head.\u00a0 I thought I was just stealing a little bit of money and going to get away with it.\u201d\u00a0 But now I thought, \u201cOkay, stop it. Stop it.\u00a0 Got to get out of this mess, and the mess is, these guys want something.\u00a0 We\u2019ll pacify them and then we\u2019ll move on.\u00a0 I\u2019ve learned my lesson.\u00a0 I\u2019ve learned my lesson to not steal on the wrong turf.\u201d\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t the lesson that I was actually sinning against God.\u00a0 But that comes later in the story.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd so here I am.\u00a0 They picked us up.\u00a0 I showed them that our money had been seized by the IRS, and I developed this scheme \u2013 had a letter made, and they ripped up the letter in front of us.\u00a0 They said, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 Not only do we want all the money in your pockets right now, but now we want an extra $50,000 and $5,000 a month, or we\u2019re not only going to kill your friend\u2019s little sister, we\u2019re going to kill you guys.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo my little scheme couldn\u2019t even get by the Mob.\u00a0 So we went back and we actually stole more money, because here\u2019s the thing:\u00a0 I spent all the money that I had stolen up to that point.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even have $50,000 to give to these guys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You had stolen $300,000 and you didn\u2019t have $50,000.\u00a0 Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kevin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Squandered it.\u00a0 Squandered it.\u00a0 And most people think, \u201cIf I\u2019d just won the lottery I\u2019d have money.\u00a0 I\u2019d give to a great ministry, I\u2019d give to this.\u201d\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 The deception is this:\u00a0 When you\u2019re not doing things God\u2019s way, you\u2019re not going to do it God\u2019s way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo here I am, I\u2019m in this limo, I said, \u201cOkay, we\u2019ll give them the money.\u201d\u00a0 So the next day I went to the bank and took money out.\u00a0 I met him in a hotel on a 12<sup>th<\/sup> floor someplace, and I had to bring the money and put it in a <em>Wall Street Journal.<\/em>\u00a0 It reads right out of a spy novel.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI brought it up there.\u00a0 I\u2019m scared for my life.\u00a0 I gave them the money and they said, \u201cDon\u2019t move or we\u2019ll kill you,\u201d and I thought, \u201cOh, great.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to kill me anyway.\u201d\u00a0 And so, to make a long story even longer, I finally, I got out of there and I thought, \u201cOkay, I\u2019m going to leave this job and I\u2019m going to go to law school and I\u2019ll leave it all behind me, because I know I have a new horizon.\u00a0 Okay, this is a bad chapter in my life, but I\u2019m going to go forward.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo here I am in law school and I\u2019m thinking things are going well, and see, these seeds that I had sown before law school \u2013 I met some unsavory fellows in law school, and I ended up doing homework for them, which is called moral turpitude.\u00a0 You\u2019re not allowed to do that, even in law school.\u00a0 People might laugh.\u00a0 So I was making $200 a week cash, and I\u2019m thinking,\u201dOkay, God, this is great.\u00a0 I\u2019m making $200.\u00a0 I am the boy wonder once again.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAbout a year into law school I got a knock at the door.\u00a0 It was the FBI and the Sheriff\u2019s deputies, and they said, \u201cYou have a right to remain silent.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cWait a second, I\u2019m in law school now.\u00a0 I\u2019m protected.\u00a0 I have my brethren.\u00a0 They\u2019ll get me out of this.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo they put me in the squad car, took me to the jail, and they said, \u201cWe want you to tell your whole story.\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cNo, with all due respect,\u201d you know, I\u2019m still cocky, \u201cI need to talk to a lawyer.\u201d\u00a0 I saw too many crime movies, crime shows, alright?\u00a0 And so here I am, ready to be booked, and the next time that I would be just faced with this situation where God would get my attention.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I\u2019m not sure what there is to say at the end of that, but I am thinking about a passage in Galatians 6.\u00a0 It reminds us, \u201cDo not be deceived.\u00a0 God is not mocked, for whatever one sows that will he also reap.\u00a0 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption.\u00a0 But the one who sows to the Spirit will reap from the Spirit eternal life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it goes on to talk about not growing weary in doing good, and I think, frankly, that\u2019s where most of our listeners are right now, is in need of being reminded, don\u2019t be weary about doing good, for in due time you will reap the result of you sowing what is good.\u00a0 The real lesson however today is, if you\u2019re sowing seeds to the flesh, even in secret, God will not be mocked.\u00a0 There may be a knock at the door.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, and obviously the story is not over.\u00a0 In fact, Kevin, you talk in the book about how God did a dramatic turnaround in
