no, no, we don\u2019t win the battle.\u00a0 Rather, when we build this beautiful vision, beginning at the age of three, four, five years old, of one day there\u2019s going to be one guy that captures your heart and he\u2019s worth waiting for, that\u2019s a positive message.\u00a0 And positive parenting messages are far more potent than negative ones.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is FamilyLife today for Wednesday, April 6<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDannah Gresh joins us today to help us think strategically and wisely about planting those positive messages in the hearts of our children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Isn\u2019t it too bad that kids grow up?\u00a0 I mean, sometimes don\u2019t you just look and go. \u201cI just..\u00a0 If we could just press the button and keep you this age.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve got pictures in my office at home.\u00a0 I pause and stop there and it\u2019s little chubby cheeks.\u00a0 They\u2019re huddling up with daddy and, I mean, they\u2019ve got me absolutely wrapped around their little finger and they know it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The truth is they do grow up and it\u2019s good that they grow up and it\u2019s right that they grow up.\u00a0 We don\u2019t want to keep them from growing up.\u00a0 But there\u2019s something about the innocence of childhood.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, Jesus talked about having the faith of a child and I think he was pointing to some of that trusting innocence that, as parents, we ought to preserve for as long as we can in our children\u2019s hearts.\u00a0 But it\u2019s sad in this culture.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to fight that fight because the culture\u2019s trying to grow them up too quick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, to that very point, Bob.\u00a0 First of all, let me introduce our guest.\u00a0 She\u2019s no stranger to our listening audience.\u00a0 In fact, we were talking about it.\u00a0 She may be, other than Barbara, the most frequent guest, frequent female guest, on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She would be in the top five list.\u00a0 In fact, we\u2019ve been thinking about just changing the name of the program to FamilyLife Today with Dennis Rainey and Dannah Gresh!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually, Dannah asked to be put on the payroll, she\u2019s been on the broadcast so many times.\u00a0 Dannah, welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, you got turned around and got stung too, didn\u2019t you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you, I think!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Dannah is a contributor to that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou also are the author of a number of books.\u00a0 You have three children and this latest book you\u2019ve written, called <em>Six Ways to Keep the \u201cLittle\u201d in Your Girl<\/em>, is talking about what Bob mentioned here.\u00a0 You don\u2019t know this, but when Barbara and I were raising our kids, there was this book she used to read aloud to me.\u00a0 It was called <em>The Hurried Child<\/em>.\u00a0 It was all about how, back then, when we were raising our six, how everything was just being pressurized against children and parents to grow up faster and to get it done quicker and all this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got to thinking, in our culture, the hurried child, that\u2019s still an issue.\u00a0 But it\u2019s now the assaulted child.\u00a0 Because this is a culture that is really coming after our children with all kinds of agendas, some of them being evil.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 If I could encapsulate my concern... Twelve years ago when I started my ministry to teen girls with a focus on helping them live lives of purity and modesty, I would say twelve, thirteen year old girls were kind of the front line of our battle zone.\u00a0 If we started to talk to them at those ages, we were hitting them when they were first being marketed to for products that were going to take them off that wagon of purity and modesty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the front line is probably an eight or nine year old girl.\u00a0 That\u2019s heartbreaking.\u00a0 Consider some of the things that are happening.\u00a0 Last year and the year before, the top television program watched by eight to twelve year old girls\u2026\u00a0 One of them, American\u2019s Next Top Models, waif-thin models in catfights, wearing hardly any clothes, wearing way too much makeup.\u00a0 And <em>Desperate Housewives<\/em>\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Come on\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, they watch it with their moms.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What\u2019s going on with parents?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019re watching Desperate Housewives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 With them?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 With them.\u00a0 Now, I think a good juxtaposition would be that in l980 the top television program in that same demographic was <em>Care Bears<\/em>.\u00a0 That kind of sums up where we\u2019re at with girls today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow what\u2019s the outcome of all the makeup, all the clothing that makes them look like seventeen olds not wearing much, the music?\u00a0 \u201cDon\u2019t you wish your girlfriend was hot like me?\u201d is on their lips.\u00a0 The American Psychological Association has really traced the footprints.\u00a0 Those little girls, who in the ages of eight to twelve will get exposed to those things, are most at risk in their teen years of depression, eating disorders, and an early sexual debut.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is what really breaks my heart because I love the covenant of marriage.\u00a0 Those little girls grow up to be married young women who are sexually repressed because they have so many broken pieces in their hearts from sexual experiences and so many body issue images from comparing themselves to an unattainable standard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell our listeners about the conversation you had late night, at Denny\u2019s with your daughter and some of her friends, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I start the book <em>Six Ways to Keep the \u201cLittle\u201d in Your Girl<\/em> with one of the most shocking conversations I overheard with my daughter.\u00a0 She had just finished a play and they had an after party at midnight at a restaurant.\u00a0 Of course, I tagged along.\u00a0 I\u2019m always the tag along mom.\u00a0 I listened as this fifteen year old girl talked to my, then, fourteen year old daughter.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were talking about girl stuff, periods, cramps.\u00a0 That led to a conversation about the pill.\u00a0 This girl was just so delighted that her best friend was on the pill because now she could have sex with her boyfriend without any worries.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, I piped up and said, \u201cHow is that girl going to be protected from sexually transmitted diseases?\u201d\u00a0 My daughter just kind of cringes and jumps under the table almost and says, \u201cYou don\u2019t understand.\u00a0 My mom will talk about anything.\u201d\u00a0 And I will!\u00a0 I just jumped into the conversation.\u00a0 And in the course of the conversation she kept texting her boyfriend, using profanity the whole time in front of me.\u00a0 At one point I said, \u201cWho are you texting?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cMy boyfriend.\u201d\u00a0 Well, of course, what am I going to ask?\u00a0 What do you think I\u2019m going to ask?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWhat are you saying?\u00a0 What\u2019s your text say?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly!\u00a0 I say, \u201cHey, are you having sex with your boyfriend?\u201d\u00a0 And this fifteen year old explains that the mom and dad of the boy don\u2019t want them to have sex but her dad doesn\u2019t seem to say much at all about it.\u00a0 And yet, when she stays overnight at her mom\u2019s house, and her boyfriend comes to spend the night, they blow up the queen size inflatable bed and they\u2019re allowed to sleep together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The boyfriend comes to spend the night?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 The boyfriend comes to spend the night!\u00a0 And this girl\u2019s having this conversation in front of my precious purity-ring-bearing, fourteen year old daughter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It ain\u2019t <em>Care Bears<\/em> anymore.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s not <em>Care Bears<\/em> anymore.\u00a0 You know, moms.\u00a0 I have sheltered my kids in an appropriate ways.\u00a0 Yet this conversation happens.\u00a0 I was so proud to watch that night as Lexi Gresh mentioned her purity ring and said, \u201cI\u2019m so proud.\u00a0 I\u2019ve made a decision to wait.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, she didn\u2019t have it on that night because she was in costume for the play.\u00a0 The girl made a comment of\u00a0 \u201cLexi, you\u2019re not wearing it tonight.\u00a0 Does that mean you\u2019re allowed to do it tonight?\u201d\u00a0 And Lexi just looked at her and said, \u201cIt\u2019s a commitment that I\u2019m keeping for every night, my whole life, until my wedding night.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was so proud of her.\u00a0 I felt like Lexi and I won a battle that night.\u00a0\u00a0 Felt sad for that other mother and daughter because they lost something.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m trying to imagine a mother of a fourteen year old going, \u201cHey, here\u2019s a good idea.\u00a0 Have your boyfriend spend the night and we\u2019ll blow up the queen size mattress and you guys can stay.\u201d\u00a0 What mom\u2026?\u00a0 What is a mom thinking when she thinks that would be a good thing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 She\u2019s not thinking through all the risks because even if she\u2019s a left leaning thinking women, she\u2019s not thinking about the sexually transmitted diseases.\u00a0 She\u2019s not thinking about the fact that the suicide rate among sexually active teenagers is six to twelve times higher than their virgin peers.\u00a0 She\u2019s not looking at the whole picture at all.\u00a0 She\u2019s not being a smart mom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the thing that Barbara and I did that still, Dannah, turned out to be\u2026\u00a0 And we weren\u2019t smart.\u00a0 We just stumbled on to some things.\u00a0 I\u2019m convinced God allowed us to do this to keep us\u2026.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 Don\u2019t\u2019 tell me you weren\u2019t smart because I was reading your stuff and doing what you said.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They were smart after they made the mistakes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, that\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 But seriously.\u00a0 We started teaching a sixth grade Sunday school class of eleven and twelve year olds, okay?\u00a0 I mistakenly thought I was there just to teach them.\u00a0 When in reality, over the next eleven years I went to school on those kids.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYet what I\u2019m hearing today is these decisions that were being pushed down to eleven and twelve are now being pushed earlier and earlier to these young ladies and these men\u2019s lives.\u00a0 Most parents, most of us, are still back in the <em>Care Bears<\/em> era, and we\u2019re not considering all the crush and, as I mentioned earlier, the assault of the culture.\u00a0 So our kids are being abused in this evil age.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 They naively fall into things.\u00a0 For example, last year about twenty-five percent of kids under the age of twelve encountered porn on the internet, not really looking for it.\u00a0 Now some of them were, because porn was the forth word searched on the internet for kids twelve and under last year.\u00a0 So it is a different day and age.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What were the other three words?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 But that\u2019s enough to scare me, just the one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m guessing Justin and Beiber were two of them.\u00a0 That\u2019s just a guess!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But the point is children today, more than ever, need moms and dads who are clued in about what\u2019s taking place in the culture and they\u2019re connected heart to heart with their children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve been talking for about ten minutes and I can imagine the moms and dads listening, going \u201cOkay, that\u2019s it.\u00a0 We\u2019re selling the house.\u00a0 We\u2019re moving out to a ranch in the country.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to put up a high wall all around everything.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to get rid of the television.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to isolate.\u00a0 And that\u2019s the way we protect our child.\u201d\u00a0 Is that what you recommend?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 No. In fact, if I were to encapsulate my recommendation into one quick sentence, it would be to understand and engage in the power of parent-child connectedness.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tParent-child connectedness was a term that I came to understand when I was first researching how to raise sexually pure kids about twelve years ago.\u00a0 It simply is being with them, \u201cbe with\u201d time, constant \u201cbe with\u201d time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s having planned out and executed traditions.\u00a0 It\u2019s having dinner three to five times a week with the TV turned off and engaging in conversation.\u00a0 Or cutting down a Christmas tree at Christmas.\u00a0 Or having an egg hunt during the resurrection season.\u00a0 It\u2019s those repeated traditions as well as just those daily things that you do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s being available when your kid shows up from fifth grade with a recipe for some slime that they learned about in science class that bounces off the walls if you make it.\u00a0 You go to Wal-Mart.\u00a0 You buy the ingredients.\u00a0 You make it.\u00a0 You connect.\u00a0 Those things build the opportunity as teenagers for you to speak into your kids\u2019 lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We keep using the word \u201cbridge.\u201d\u00a0 I like that visual because a bridge really is designed for the traffic to go both directions.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just only to get to know your child and what your little girl likes and what they\u2019re going through in life.\u00a0 It\u2019s also a bridge to occasionally drive across and take truth to them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe great commandment found in Deuteronomy, chapter six\u2026\u00a0\u00a0 Interestingly, you always think of the great commandment being in the New Testament.\u00a0 The great commandment really was given right after the law was given.\u00a0 What God commanded here, He said, \u201cThese words shall be on your hearts and you shall talk of them with your children when you walk by the way, when you lie down, when you rise up.\u00a0 They shall be like doorposts over your house.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEverywhere you look you\u2019re going to be passing on truth and the knowledge of who God is so that your kids, as they encounter evil, as they encounter things that they\u2019re not ready for, they\u2019ll know how to make the judgment.\u00a0 That\u2019s what you\u2019re talking about here in building a relationship.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just so that a mom and a daughter or a father and son can have a hug.\u00a0 It\u2019s really for the purpose of ultimately passing on the truth of God and the truth about God to your children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly!\u00a0 And that\u2019s one of the key verses in the book, along with Proverbs.\u00a0 In the twenty-second chapter it says \u201cTrain up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy world was changed as I was parenting and I found out that the word \u201cway\u201d in that verse, \u201cTrain up a child in the <em>way<\/em> he should go,\u201d was the word \u201cderrick,\u201d which is a word that means my way or my unique bent.\u00a0 It was an archer\u2019s term and it was meant to talk about them preparing to win in battle with that bow and arrow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, back then they didn\u2019t have a bow and arrow with gadgets and buttons that you could turn so that even I could hit the broad side of a barn.\u00a0 They had, you know, wood bows that, depending on the tension of the wood, the strength of the wood, the moisture in the wood, you had to learn the strength of that bow.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo what God is saying to us as parents in this verse, not only that there is His way, but that you must understand the unique bent and strengths and bets of each individual child.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s something that only quality time can afford you to know.\u00a0 That this child is an introvert.\u00a0 That this child is an extrovert.\u00a0 That this child\u2019s going to say things without thinking.\u00a0 That this child is going to need to be drawn out to say what they think and what they feel.\u00a0 That connecting time allows us to know the unique differences in that child so that we can help them live God\u2019s way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Dannah, one of the things I like about your book was you didn\u2019t\u2019 just talk about this connection in broad terms.\u00a0 You actually help a parent measure the quality of connectedness that they have with their daughter.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have a quiz on page 40 and 41 and, with your permission I\u2019d like to make this available on the <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> website.\u00a0 If you would, would you just go over a few of these.\u00a0 Explain why you have what you have here because, I don\u2019t know, there\u2019s probably a couple of dozen items that you\u2019re measuring.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<br><strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 Maybe we should make Bob take one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re the one that has teenage daughters.\u00a0 Maybe you should take it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 The first one says \u201cI can name my daughter\u2019s three best friends.\u201d\u00a0 Think about that, Mom.\u00a0 Can you do that right now?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is an important one.\u00a0 \u201cI comment on my daughter\u2019s weight.\u201d\u00a0 Further down the test it says \u201cI complain about my own weight in front of my daughter.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMoms, we find that when we\u2019re constantly asking our daughters about their weight and when we\u2019re constantly picking on our own bodies and our own weight, that we increase some of the sensitivities that they have about their own beauty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDo you know the moms of your daughter\u2019s friends?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s such an important thing because you\u2019re sometimes entrusting them to that household, right?\u00a0 What\u2019s going on in that household?\u00a0 Is it a queen size inflatable bed household?\u00a0 Or is it a household that you can trust that your values are going to be enforced.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s one that you have on the list. \u201cShe has a boyfriend.\u201d\u00a0 Oh, some people are going to laugh and say, \u201cOh, come on.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t know that she had a boyfriend?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s not that you don\u2019t know.\u00a0 It\u2019s just the very fact that, as a tween girl, if she has a boyfriend, you\u2019re saying that\u2019s a risk factor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> It\u2019s a risk factor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, there\u2019s that, Bob.\u00a0 But our daughters, may I say it, hid the fact that they were quote, unquote, going out!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They had boyfriends behind your back?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh yeah!\u00a0 Are you kidding me?\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until some of their brothers and sisters ratted on them and kind of outed them that I would find out about these hidden relationships.\u00a0 You may think some of these questions don\u2019t apply to you, but the reality is kids are very good at covering it up, for a while.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your point with this quiz and, as Dennis mentioned, we\u2019ve got it on our website at FamilyLifeToday.com, but your point is this gives you a little diagnostic tool to say how well connected are we rather than just leaving it as an abstraction and going \u201cwell, I think we\u2019re doing okay.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTake the quiz and just say where are the gaps?\u00a0 Where are some missing areas?\u00a0 Or where are some opportunities to connect?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s one that says \u201cWe talk about boys.\u201d\u00a0 Now, Dannah, what do you talk to your daughter Lexi about boys?\u00a0 What do you say to her?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve been talking about boys since she was five and I let her try my wedding dress on.\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you why.\u00a0 Because I have wanted to keep her off the boy crazy train and, ironically, I\u2019ve done that by talking to her about them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t\u2019 think we parent best with negative messages.\u00a0 When we say no boyfriends, no sex, no secular music, no, no, no, no, no, we don\u2019t win the battle.\u00a0 Rather, when we build this beautiful vision beginning at the age of three, four, five years old, of one day there\u2019s going to be one guy that captures your heart and he is going to knock your socks off and he\u2019s worth waiting for, that\u2019s a positive message.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPositive parenting messages are far more potent than negative ones.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I can imagine mom, and probably a few dads listening in, who say, \u201cWell, I need to re-up my game.\u00a0 It\u2019s game time.\u201d\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 You\u2019re right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis culture demands both hands, I hate to use an agricultural term here because none of us do this anymore, both hands on the plow, facing forward.\u00a0 You have to know where you\u2019re going.\u00a0 You have to concentrate and you have to be intentional.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tReally, what you\u2019ve done here, Dannah, in your book, is you\u2019ve really given parents guidance for how to develop that connection and how to meet them in the midst of these years that are full of all kinds of unanswered questions, lot of uncertainties, and lots of mixed messages from the culture and from friends and peers.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve really done a great job in this book of educating parents on how they can best connect with their daughters and help them grow up to become a young lady who doesn\u2019t have to experience evil the way her friends are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think it\u2019s important, too, that we here, Dannah, say that we shouldn\u2019t try to back away from these issues or to hide or to isolate.\u00a0 That\u2019s not a winning strategy.\u00a0 A mom has to engage early and often with her daughter in these areas because they are going to come.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to be ready for them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo get a copy of a book like <em>Six Ways to Keep the Little in Your Girl <\/em>and to have no, no, we don\u2019t win the battle.\u00a0 Rather, when we build this beautiful vision, beginning at the age of three, four, five years old, of one day there\u2019s going to be one guy that captures your heart and he\u2019s worth waiting for, that\u2019s a positive message.\u00a0 And positive parenting messages are far more potent than negative sometimes don\u2019t you just look and go. \u201cI just..\u00a0 If we could just press the button and keep you this age.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve got pictures in my office at home.\u00a0 I pause and stop there and it\u2019s little chubby cheeks.\u00a0 They\u2019re huddling up with daddy and, I mean, they\u2019ve got me absolutely wrapped around their little finger and they know it. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The truth is they do grow up and it\u2019s good that they grow up and it\u2019s right that they grow up.\u00a0 We don\u2019t want to keep them from growing up.\u00a0 But there\u2019s something about the innocence of childhood.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, Jesus talked about having the faith of a child and I think he was pointing to some of that trusting innocence that, as parents, we ought to preserve for as long as we can in our children\u2019s hearts.\u00a0 But it\u2019s sad in this culture.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to fight that fight because the culture\u2019s trying to grow them up too quick.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, to that very point, Bob.\u00a0 First of all, let me introduce our guest.\u00a0 She\u2019s no stranger to our listening audience.\u00a0 In fact, we were talking about it.\u00a0 She may be, other than Barbara, the most frequent guest, frequent female guest, on <em>FamilyLife \u201cLittle\u201d in Your Girl<\/em>, is talking about what Bob mentioned here.\u00a0 You don\u2019t know this, but when Barbara and I were raising our kids, there was this book she used to read aloud to me.\u00a0 It was called <em>The Hurried Child<\/em>.\u00a0 It was all about how, back then, when we were raising our six, how everything was just being pressurized against children and parents to grow up faster and to get it done quicker and all this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI got to thinking, in our culture, the hurried child, that\u2019s still an issue.\u00a0 But it\u2019s now the assaulted child.\u00a0 Because this is a culture that is really coming after our children with all kinds of agendas, some of them being evil.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 If I could encapsulate my concern... Twelve years ago when I started my ministry to teen girls with a focus on helping them live lives of purity and modesty, I would say twelve, thirteen year old girls were kind of the front line of our battle zone.\u00a0 If we started to talk to them at those ages, we were hitting them when they were first being marketed to for products that were going to take them off that wagon of purity and modesty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the front line is probably an eight or nine year old girl.\u00a0 That\u2019s heartbreaking.\u00a0 Consider some of the things that are happening.\u00a0 Last year and the year before, the top television program watched by eight to twelve year old girls\u2026\u00a0 One of them, American\u2019s Next Top Models, waif-thin models in catfights, wearing hardly any clothes, wearing way too much makeup.\u00a0 And <em>Desperate Housewives<\/em>\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Come on\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, they watch it with their moms.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What\u2019s going on with parents?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019re watching Desperate Housewives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 With them?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 With them.\u00a0 Now, I think a good juxtaposition would be that in l980 the top television program in that same demographic was <em>Care Bears<\/em>.\u00a0 That kind of sums up where we\u2019re at with girls today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow what\u2019s the outcome of all the makeup, all the clothing that makes them look like seventeen olds not wearing much, the music?\u00a0 \u201cDon\u2019t you wish your girlfriend was hot like me?\u201d is on their lips.\u00a0 The American Psychological Association has really traced the footprints.\u00a0 Those little girls, who in the ages of eight to twelve will get exposed to those things, are most at risk in their teen years of depression, eating disorders, and an early sexual debut.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is what really breaks my heart because I love the covenant of marriage.\u00a0 Those little girls grow up to be married young women who are sexually repressed because they have so many broken pieces in their hearts from sexual experiences and so many body issue images from comparing themselves to an unattainable standard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell our listeners about the conversation you had late night, at Denny\u2019s with your daughter and some of her friends, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I start the book <em>Six Ways to Keep the \u201cLittle\u201d in Your Girl<\/em> with one of the most shocking conversations I overheard with my daughter.\u00a0 She had just finished a play and they had an after party at midnight at a restaurant.\u00a0 Of course, I tagged along.\u00a0 I\u2019m always the tag along mom.\u00a0 I listened as this fifteen year old girl talked to my, then, fourteen year old daughter.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were talking about girl stuff, periods, cramps.\u00a0 That led to a conversation about the pill.\u00a0 This girl was just so delighted that her best friend was on the pill because now she could have sex with her boyfriend without any worries.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, I piped up and said, \u201cHow is that girl going to be protected from sexually transmitted diseases?\u201d\u00a0 My daughter just kind of cringes and jumps under the table almost and says, \u201cYou don\u2019t understand.\u00a0 My mom will talk about anything.\u201d\u00a0 And I will!\u00a0 I just jumped into the conversation.\u00a0 And in the course of the conversation she kept texting her boyfriend, using profanity the whole time in front of me.\u00a0 At one point I said, \u201cWho are you texting?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cMy boyfriend.\u201d\u00a0 Well, of course, what am I going to ask?\u00a0 What do you think I\u2019m going to ask?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cWhat are you saying?\u00a0 What\u2019s your text say?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly!\u00a0 I say, \u201cHey, are you having sex with your boyfriend?\u201d\u00a0 And this fifteen year old explains that the mom and dad of the boy don\u2019t want them to have sex but her dad doesn\u2019t seem to say much at all about it.\u00a0 And yet, when she stays overnight at her mom\u2019s house, and her boyfriend comes to spend the night, they blow up the queen size inflatable bed and they\u2019re allowed to sleep together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The boyfriend comes to spend the night?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 The boyfriend comes to spend the night!\u00a0 And this girl\u2019s having this conversation in front of my precious purity-ring-bearing, fourteen year old daughter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It ain\u2019t <em>Care Bears<\/em> anymore.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s not <em>Care Bears<\/em> anymore.\u00a0 You know, moms.\u00a0 I have sheltered my kids in an appropriate ways.\u00a0 Yet this conversation happens.\u00a0 I was so proud to watch that night as Lexi Gresh mentioned her purity ring and said, \u201cI\u2019m so proud.\u00a0 I\u2019ve made a decision to wait.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, she didn\u2019t have it on that night because she was in costume for the play.\u00a0 The girl made a comment of\u00a0 \u201cLexi, you\u2019re not wearing it tonight.\u00a0 Does that mean you\u2019re allowed to do it tonight?\u201d\u00a0 And Lexi just looked at her and said, \u201cIt\u2019s a commitment that I\u2019m keeping for every night, my whole life, until my wedding night.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was so proud of her.\u00a0 I felt like Lexi and I won a battle that night.\u00a0\u00a0 Felt sad for that other mother and daughter because they lost something.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m trying to imagine a mother of a fourteen year old going, \u201cHey, here\u2019s a good idea.\u00a0 Have your boyfriend spend the night and we\u2019ll blow up the queen size mattress and you guys can stay.\u201d\u00a0 What mom\u2026?\u00a0 What is a mom thinking when she thinks that would be a good thing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 She\u2019s not thinking through all the risks because even if she\u2019s a left leaning thinking women, she\u2019s not thinking about the sexually transmitted diseases.\u00a0 She\u2019s not thinking about the fact that the suicide rate among sexually active teenagers is six to twelve times higher than their virgin peers.\u00a0 She\u2019s not looking at the whole picture at all.\u00a0 She\u2019s not being a smart mom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the thing that Barbara and I did that still, Dannah, turned out to be\u2026\u00a0 And we weren\u2019t smart.\u00a0 We just stumbled on to some things.\u00a0 I\u2019m convinced God allowed us to do this to keep us\u2026.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 Don\u2019t\u2019 tell me you weren\u2019t smart because I was reading your stuff and doing what you said.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They were smart after they made the mistakes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, that\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 But seriously.\u00a0 We started teaching a sixth grade Sunday school class of eleven and twelve year olds, okay?\u00a0 I mistakenly thought I was there just to teach them.\u00a0 When in reality, over the next eleven years I went to school on those kids.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYet what I\u2019m hearing today is these decisions that were being pushed down to eleven and twelve are now being pushed earlier and earlier to these young ladies and these men\u2019s lives.\u00a0 Most parents, most of us, are still back in the <em>Care Bears<\/em> era, and we\u2019re not considering all the crush and, as I mentioned earlier, the assault of the culture.\u00a0 So our kids are being abused in this evil age.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 They naively fall into things.\u00a0 For example, last year about twenty-five percent of kids under the age of twelve encountered porn on the internet, not really looking for it.\u00a0 Now some of them were, because porn was the forth word searched on the internet for kids twelve and under last year.\u00a0 So it is a different day and age.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> What were the other three words?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 But that\u2019s enough to scare me, just the one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m guessing Justin and Beiber were two of them.\u00a0 That\u2019s just a guess!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But the point is children today, more than ever, need moms and dads who are clued in about what\u2019s taking place in the culture and they\u2019re connected heart to heart with their children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve been talking for about ten minutes and I can imagine the moms and dads listening, going \u201cOkay, that\u2019s it.\u00a0 We\u2019re selling the house.\u00a0 We\u2019re moving out to a ranch in the country.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to put up a high wall all around everything.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to get rid of the television.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to isolate.\u00a0 And that\u2019s the way we protect our child.\u201d\u00a0 Is that what you recommend?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 No. In fact, if I were to encapsulate my recommendation into one quick sentence, it would be to understand and engage in the power of parent-child connectedness.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tParent-child connectedness was a term that I came to understand when I was first researching how to raise sexually pure kids about twelve years ago.\u00a0 It simply is being with them, \u201cbe with\u201d time, constant \u201cbe with\u201d time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s having planned out and executed traditions.\u00a0 It\u2019s having dinner three to five times a week with the TV turned off and engaging in conversation.\u00a0 Or cutting down a Christmas tree at Christmas.\u00a0 Or having an egg hunt during the resurrection season.\u00a0 It\u2019s those repeated traditions as well as just those daily things that you do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s being available when your kid shows up from fifth grade with a recipe for some slime that they learned about in science class that bounces off the walls if you make it.\u00a0 You go to Wal-Mart.\u00a0 You buy the ingredients.\u00a0 You make it.\u00a0 You connect.\u00a0 Those things build the opportunity as teenagers for you to speak into your kids\u2019 lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We keep using the word \u201cbridge.\u201d\u00a0 I like that visual because a bridge really is designed for the traffic to go both directions.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just only to get to know your child and what your little girl likes and what they\u2019re going through in life.\u00a0 It\u2019s also a bridge to occasionally drive across and take truth to them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe great commandment found in Deuteronomy, chapter six\u2026\u00a0\u00a0 Interestingly, you always think of the great commandment being in the New Testament.\u00a0 The great commandment really was given right after the law was given.\u00a0 What God commanded here, He said, \u201cThese words shall be on your hearts and you shall talk of them with your children when you walk by the way, when you lie down, when you rise up.\u00a0 They shall be like doorposts over your house.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEverywhere you look you\u2019re going to be passing on truth and the knowledge of who God is so that your kids, as they encounter evil, as they encounter things that they\u2019re not ready for, they\u2019ll know how to make the judgment.\u00a0 That\u2019s what you\u2019re talking about here in building a relationship.\u00a0 It\u2019s not just so that a mom and a daughter or a father and son can have a hug.\u00a0 It\u2019s really for the purpose of ultimately passing on the truth of God and the truth about God to your children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly!\u00a0 And that\u2019s one of the key verses in the book, along with Proverbs.\u00a0 In the twenty-second chapter it says \u201cTrain up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy world was changed as I was parenting and I found out that the word \u201cway\u201d in that verse, \u201cTrain up a child in the <em>way<\/em> he should go,\u201d was the word \u201cderrick,\u201d which is a word that means my way or my unique bent.\u00a0 It was an archer\u2019s term and it was meant to talk about them preparing to win in battle with that bow and arrow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, back then they didn\u2019t have a bow and arrow with gadgets and buttons that you could turn so that even I could hit the broad side of a barn.\u00a0 They had, you know, wood bows that, depending on the tension of the wood, the strength of the wood, the moisture in the wood, you had to learn the strength of that bow.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo what God is saying to us as parents in this verse, not only that there is His way, but that you must understand the unique bent and strengths and bets of each individual child.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s something that only quality time can afford you to know.\u00a0 That this child is an introvert.\u00a0 That this child is an extrovert.\u00a0 That this child\u2019s going to say things without thinking.\u00a0 That this child is going to need to be drawn out to say what they think and what they feel.\u00a0 That connecting time allows us to know the unique differences in that child so that we can help them live God\u2019s way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Dannah, one of the things I like about your book was you didn\u2019t\u2019 just talk about this connection in broad terms.\u00a0 You actually help a parent measure the quality of connectedness that they have with their daughter.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have a quiz on page 40 and 41 and, with your permission I\u2019d like to make this available on the <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> website.\u00a0 If you would, would you just go over a few of these.\u00a0 Explain why you have what you have here because, I don\u2019t know, there\u2019s probably a couple of dozen items that you\u2019re measuring.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0<br><strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 Maybe we should make Bob take one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re the one that has teenage daughters.\u00a0 Maybe you should take it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 The first one says \u201cI can name my daughter\u2019s three best friends.\u201d\u00a0 Think about that, Mom.\u00a0 Can you do that right now?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is an important one.\u00a0 \u201cI comment on my daughter\u2019s weight.\u201d\u00a0 Further down the test it says \u201cI complain about my own weight in front of my daughter.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMoms, we find that when we\u2019re constantly asking our daughters about their weight and when we\u2019re constantly picking on our own bodies and our own weight, that we increase some of the sensitivities that they have about their own beauty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDo you know the moms of your daughter\u2019s friends?\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s such an important thing because you\u2019re sometimes entrusting them to that household, right?\u00a0 What\u2019s going on in that household?\u00a0 Is it a queen size inflatable bed household?\u00a0 Or is it a household that you can trust that your values are going to be enforced.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s one that you have on the list. \u201cShe has a boyfriend.\u201d\u00a0 Oh, some people are going to laugh and say, \u201cOh, come on.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t know that she had a boyfriend?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s not that you don\u2019t know.\u00a0 It\u2019s just the very fact that, as a tween girl, if she has a boyfriend, you\u2019re saying that\u2019s a risk factor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong> It\u2019s a risk factor.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, there\u2019s that, Bob.\u00a0 But our daughters, may I say it, hid the fact that they were quote, unquote, going out!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They had boyfriends behind your back?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh yeah!\u00a0 Are you kidding me?\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until some of their brothers and sisters ratted on them and kind of outed them that I would find out about these hidden relationships.\u00a0 You may think some of these questions don\u2019t apply to you, but the reality is kids are very good at covering it up, for a while.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Your point with this quiz and, as Dennis mentioned, we\u2019ve got it on our website at FamilyLifeToday.com, but your point is this gives you a little diagnostic tool to say how well connected are we rather than just leaving it as an abstraction and going \u201cwell, I think we\u2019re doing okay.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTake the quiz and just say where are the gaps?\u00a0 Where are some missing areas?\u00a0 Or where are some opportunities to connect?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s one that says \u201cWe talk about boys.\u201d\u00a0 Now, Dannah, what do you talk to your daughter Lexi about boys?\u00a0 What do you say to her?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dannah:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve been talking about boys since she was five and I let her try my wedding dress on.\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you why.\u00a0 Because I have wanted to keep her off the boy crazy train and, ironically, I\u2019ve done that by talking to her about them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t\u2019 think we parent best with negative messages.\u00a0 When we say no boyfriends, no sex, no secular music, no, no, no, no, no, we don\u2019t win the battle.\u00a0 Rather, when we build this beautiful vision beginning at the age of three, four, five years old, of one day there\u2019s going to be one guy that captures your heart and he is going to knock your socks off and he\u2019s worth waiting for, that\u2019s a positive message.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPositive parenting messages are far more potent than negative ones.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I can imagine mom, and probably a few dads listening in, who say, \u201cWell, I need to re-up my game.\u00a0 It\u2019s game time.\u201d\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 You\u2019re right. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis culture demands both hands, I hate to use an agricultural term here because none of us do this anymore, both hands on the plow, facing forward.\u00a0 You have to know where you\u2019re going.\u00a0 You have to concentrate and you have to be intentional.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tReally, what you\u2019ve done here, Dannah, in your book, is you\u2019ve really given parents guidance for how to develop that connection and how to meet them in the midst of these years that are full of all kinds of unanswered questions, lot of uncertainties, and lots of mixed messages from the culture and from friends and peers.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve really done a great job in this book of educating parents on how they can best connect with their daughters and help them grow up to become a young lady who doesn\u2019t have to experience evil the way her friends are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think it\u2019s important, too, that we here, Dannah, say that we shouldn\u2019t try to back away from these issues or to hide or to isolate.\u00a0 That\u2019s not a winning strategy.\u00a0 A mom has to engage early and often with her daughter in these areas because
