to have your story made into a major Hollywood motion picture and how you deal with the fame that comes with that. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWelcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>; thanks for joining us.\u00a0 So, I just want to know, did you choke up at the end when you were watching the movie?\u00a0 Did you get a little\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did.\u00a0 In fact, Barbara and I were watching the movie, <em>Soul Surfer<\/em>.\u00a0 Truth be known, for probably both of us (but more for Barbara), it had been one of those terrible, horrible, no good, very bad days.\u00a0 I want to move to Australia type of days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know where it was just a tough day, and Barbara was a bit discouraged.\u00a0 Honestly\u2014 and by the way, we\u2019re in the studio here with Bethany Hamilton and her mom, Cheri.\u00a0 Cheri, Bethany welcome to the broadcast.\u00a0 I want you to know as Barbara didn\u2019t want to watch the movie, okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is Bethany\u2019s story told in a new feature film that is coming out in theaters this week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 I don\u2019t mean to insult you with that.\u00a0 That was just the state of where she was at the end of the day; but she started watching the movie, and I think that the movie really ministered to her and put her day and kind of what had happened to her that day (because there had been some things happen that day to her)\u2014you\u2019re movie kind of put life in context.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBethany, you\u2019re a surfer.\u00a0 You lost an arm as a thirteen year old to a shark, a fourteen and a half foot tiger shark.\u00a0 The story is the story of your life: not only how you grew up in competition really in a surfing family, as Cheri, as you, shared earlier, but also how you went on to compete after you lost your arm.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the movie, Jeremiah 29:11 is quoted near the beginning of the movie.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is Carrie Underwood playing your youth leader\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u201c<\/strong>Or Mars.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Youth leader:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Uh-uh.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u201c<\/strong>Blob in a lava lamp.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Youth leader:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Very creative, but no.\u00a0 It is a fly\u2019s eye.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u201c<\/strong>Weird.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Youth leader:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>How about this one?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u201c<\/strong>A brain.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u201c<\/strong>Aren\u2019t brains supposed to be pink.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u201c<\/strong>A dead rotting brain.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Youth leader:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Gross, and that is a walnut.\u00a0 So, you see how hard it can be to make sense of things when you\u2019re looking at them really close.\u00a0 The same thing is true in life.\u00a0 So, if you guys are dealing with anything that is just too hard to handle or it doesn\u2019t seem to make much sense, get a new perspective.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to share with you guys something that has really made an impact in my life.\u00a0 It is Jeremiah 29:11.\u00a0 \u201c\u2018For I know that plans I have for you\u2019, says the Lord, \u2018plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Carrie Underwood seems like a pretty cool youth leader.\u00a0 I hope that your youth leader is as cool as she played her as being in the film.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 My youth leader\/best friend is Sarah Hill.\u00a0 We\u2019re still really good friends to this day.\u00a0 She was one of the first people I saw after the shark attack in the hospital.\u00a0 She shared with me that verse, and it\u2019s kind of just been a verse that I can always refer back to.\u00a0 Just be reminded that God has a plan and a future for me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe is in control, and He wants to just guide me through every step of the way.\u00a0 So, just when I do decide to trust in Him, He always just guides me in ways that I couldn\u2019t even imagined.\u00a0 It\u2019s just been so exciting.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is one thing I love about the movie is that it shares our struggles my family and I go through, whether it be just dealing with the whole shark attack thing, losing one arm, learning how to surf again.\u00a0 I think it is something that everyone can relate to in one way or another.\u00a0 Whatever struggles they are going through in their life, they can kind of take it into their own perspective and take it into their life and just try to, hopefully, get hope and just know that God has a plan for them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Earlier Bob kind of hinted at asking you a question that I like to ask people.\u00a0 I am just curious what would you say is the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done in your life, Bethany?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Go on radio.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Go on the radio with Dennis and Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to know is he tougher than Oprah?\u00a0 Because you\u2019ve been\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re both great.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re a diplomat is what you are.\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen you in action.\u00a0 So, what\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t stage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany: <\/strong>\u00a0Yes, for sure.\u00a0 It is pretty amazing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I appreciated the way you answered that question because it\u2019s interesting, a big wave, that might become one of the most courageous things I\u2019d ever done.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was thinking about it because in the film there\u2019s some scenes where there\u2019s some big waves.\u00a0 They show surfers underwater, and I think get to the top.\u00a0 I\u2019m starting to gasp for air even as I\u2019m watching it.\u00a0 That\u2019s a real experience for surfers, isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 When there are times where you go, \u201cAm I going to make it to the top and breathe again?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It can be very scary at times, but it is the place I\u2019ve grown up.\u00a0 I\u2019ve grown up just getting pounded in white wash.\u00a0 There\u2019s some beaches you can go to and that\u2019s what you just go and do for fun.\u00a0 You go and get pounded by waves and hit the sand and look for shells\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And hopefully not the reef.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I actually do have reef scars all over my body because usually the better waves are where the reef is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What is\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 But it is kind of worth it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re five feet eleven, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 so, I was pretty grateful that it went smoothly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s some great surfing shots in the film.\u00a0 I mean anybody who likes surfing could go just to watch the surfing footage\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Even if you don\u2019t like surfing, it is so cool to just go see these girls ripping and good, beautiful waves.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Ripping, is that where you turn back up into the wave?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Ripping is like performing really well and doing good surfing, you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just want to get the lingo down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Ripping.\u00a0 You know as I watched the movie and I was looking forward to asking you this question.\u00a0 I think I know the answer.\u00a0 I was watching the girl who played you, and she was doing almost like a 360 on these little short boards, could you really do that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, actually, I did most of the stunts ripping for the one armed scenes; so, all the one arm footage of Bethany surfing in the movie is me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, Anna Sophia, can she surf at all?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Anna Sophia has definitely taken a liking to surfing.\u00a0 I taught her to surf prior to the movie.\u00a0 It\u2019s such a fun sport.\u00a0 It is hard not to like. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She any good?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 She is athletic.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She any good?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, she is doing really good.\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Would you say when we see her on the screen, it is a lot like you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would definitely say.\u00a0 I did so many double takes on that movie.\u00a0 I go, \u201cWhoa!\u00a0 She looks like Bethany.\u201d\u00a0 You know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bethany, if you had to wrap up all that\u2019s happened to you in your now twenty years of life and you kind of gave an essence paragraph of what God\u2019s done in your life, how would you describe it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 I would say that God just started me off strong with just like good group of friends that really encouraged me.\u00a0 Of course, my parents just grounded me in this faith that had to become my own and not just theirs to push upon me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is something that I\u2019ve taken up, and it\u2019s a personal relationship with Him.\u00a0 It\u2019s between me and Him, not between my mom and dad and then through Him.\u00a0 You know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA lot of kids will just do stuff because of their parents.\u00a0 It\u2019s something that\u2019s become more personal for me.\u00a0 I can talk to God whenever I want, like wherever I want, with whoever I am.\u00a0 I can just do it right here in my head, and it\u2019s really exciting to know that God is here for me every step of the way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt has been a surprising journey but powerful, exciting, fun, and way better than I could have envisioned or planned.\u00a0 So, I\u2019m just grateful and thankful for all that God has done and the way that He has strengthened me through every step of the way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know as I listened you talk about that; I think, Cheri, of you and your husband and the job you did as parents to ground your daughter and your sons in their faith; so that, they\u2019d be able to live life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou had no idea what kind of life was going to happen to them and what kind of issue they\u2019d face, but you were faithful in doing that.\u00a0 You\u2019re role as parents was powerfully used by God in your kids\u2019 lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It has to be satisfying to hear her reflect and say, \u201cMy faith is not my parents\u2019 faith.\u00a0 It is now my faith.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen that in her since she was young.\u00a0 I mean, she accepted the Lord, when you were what?\u00a0 Five years old?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You don\u2019t realize it; but you are giving a lot of parents, right now, tremendous hope because they\u2019re in the thick of raising kids and they\u2019re watching their kids struggle.\u00a0 I mean, you were thirteen.\u00a0 For goodness sakes you had to have an attitude at points toward your parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She snuck out and went surfing at night when she wasn\u2019t supposed to.\u00a0 Shame on you.\u00a0 What kind of role model are you, huh?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was really fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You kind of in the movie you weren\u2019t too tough on her either, Cheri.\u00a0 I kind of expected you to get a little tougher on her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 To ground her after that sneaking out scene.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, no.\u00a0 I would try to get my kids to ditch school and go surfing when it was really good, but they wouldn\u2019t.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 She would.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Noah, he would never do that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I wanted to ask you this, Bethany: can you even imagine or fathom what it would be like at thirteen to have what happened to you and not have a personal faith?\u00a0 Not know God?\u00a0 Not know Jesus Christ?\u00a0 Not know the Scriptures?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I can\u2019t imagine.\u00a0 I feel like it would be really hard.\u00a0 I see people that look good and look fine on the outside that have gone through really gnarly stuff; but I don\u2019t know how they are really actually doing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that it would have been really hard to do on just my own, in my own strength.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Who knows where I\u2019d be?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnother thing that I often ponder is maybe if this didn\u2019t happen maybe I would have chosen a different path that might not have not have glorifying God.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, I see a lot of my best friends that I was growing up with that didn\u2019t know Jesus.\u00a0 They kind of made some unwise choices, and I\u2019m pretty excited to be able to still have love for Jesus and passion for Him, and still being able to surf.\u00a0 At the same time, I\u2019m keeping my purity and just honoring Him in everything, not just on an interview, you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Good for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bethany, I have to tell you: we\u2019ve been doing <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for more than eighteen years now; you are the first guest to use the word \u201cgnarly\u201d in an interview. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I think there is some kind of reward she should get for using gnarly\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think so.\u00a0 Are you going to ask for an interpretation of gnarly, too?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I know\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We got the one for ripping.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know what gnarly means.\u00a0 I\u2019m a little hipper than that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to ask you about what I think is what I think is one of the most powerful scenes in the movie.\u00a0 It\u2019s while you are in Thailand.\u00a0 You went on a trip with World Vision.\u00a0 This was a year or two after\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2014the shark attack. Is that right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell us about that experience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 In fact, I wanted to ask and add to that: did that processing of seeing that poverty and just\u2014I mean the conditions in the movie looked appalling.\u00a0 Did that help you process your own loss, too?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 In a way, I don\u2019t know if it was to that extent.\u00a0 For me, I mean, I did meet this one girl who lost her mom and sibling.\u00a0 She had lost one of her parents and one of her siblings.\u00a0 Of course, she was super bummed but she was actually doing pretty decent.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that you don\u2019t necessarily need a big, beautiful house and all this stuff to be happy.\u00a0 That is one thing is even though they were struggling and going through hard times, they could still be happy and have strength in Jesus, you know?\u00a0 You don\u2019t have to have all this stuff.\u00a0 It is really hard when you lose a family member, but when you just lose a house or whatever, you can still move on and rebuild and press on with life, you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As Barbara and I were watching <em>Soul Surfer<\/em>, I don\u2019t know why, but I really got choked up in the scene where you were being brought home from the hospital.\u00a0 There were the surf boards on the side of the road that said, \u201cWelcome home, Bethany.\u00a0 We love you\u201d or something like that.\u00a0 Did that really happen?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had so much welcoming home\u2014just everything.\u00a0 First of all, it started off just in my hospital room.\u00a0 It was covered in flowers.\u00a0 You could barely walk in there.\u00a0 It was like a jungle, which I don\u2019t like hospitals; so, that really helped to make it more outsidey.\u00a0 Then, plus all the stuffed animals and just\u2014yes, tons of amazing stuff.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is really cool because people on the North Shore of Kauai are really\u2014it\u2019s a tight community.\u00a0 They will always put signs up for people if they do well in some kind of sporting event or if they\u2019re not doing good and they\u2019re coming home from something.\u00a0 It is really cool living on Kauai.\u00a0 It\u2019s just a nice, small community; and everyone is just pretty loving.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Out of all of that, what was the most powerful, emotional moment for you?\u00a0 Was there a scene in, not necessarily, I\u2019m not talking about one in the movie, but in your life?\u00a0 Was there a moment, perhaps, as you came home to your family or in the midst of leaving that hospital going back where it was just really powerful?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, one scene that I saw that just broke me, you know, like I was holding it all together; and when the family sat down to eat together and they we\u2019re going to pray and Ross didn\u2019t know what to do because\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 The brother.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 They said to hold hands.\u00a0 He goes\u2014reaches to hold her hand, and he can\u2019t.\u00a0 Then, she grabs his wrist and puts it on her shoulder.\u00a0 It just broke me.\u00a0 I fell apart on that scene because that really happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 More than once.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, there are really two things that stand out in the movie.\u00a0 One is what you wanted to happen which was Jesus Christ is alive in your lives; and you wanted God to get the glory.\u00a0 The other thing that is so powerful is that when bad things happen to people and when a family is in place that is intact: a mom and dad who in the midst of life who are committed to each other.\u00a0 A family, even in the midst of their imperfections, are committed to loving each other and pulling for each other.\u00a0 Your family has done that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo me, it is a great reminder really of what Jesus talked about in Matthew 7, where he compared two types of houses.\u00a0 Both endured wind, rain, floods;
