just got mangled and she\u2019d have to get stitches, and rehab and everything, and she\u2019d be alright.\u00a0 So I drove to the hospital and then Hulk calls me (Alana\u2019s father who was out there) and he said, \u201cAre you on your way to the hospital?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cYes.\u00a0 I\u2019ll see you there.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI go, \u201cWell, how is she?\u201d\u00a0 And he said, \u201cYou don\u2019t know?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI go, \u201cNo, how is she?\u201d And he said, \u201cShe lost her arm.\u201d\u00a0 Then I just I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Bethany Hamilton and her mom join us today.\u00a0 Bethany\u2019s story is told in a major motion picture that is being released this coming weekend.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bob, have I ever told you the only time I nearly drowned was on a surfboard in Southern California?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I haven\u2019t heard about that.\u00a0 What inspired you to go surfing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, first of all, I was spending the summer in Southern California at Campus Crusade\u2019s headquarters, Arrowhead Springs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, you were how old at this time?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 About twenty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 OK.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 About twenty.\u00a0 Good physical condition; never really played a sport that I couldn\u2019t conquer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, you\u2019d played baseball and basketball. . . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I hadn\u2019t played golf yet \u2013 that conquered me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut I went down to somewhere north of San Diego.\u00a0 A friend lived on the beach, and I stayed with him and heard the ocean all night.\u00a0 We got up the next morning and he said, \u201cWould you like to go surfing?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cHey!\u00a0 You know. . . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Come on!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was back to the \u201cBeach Boys\u201d and all that stuff.\u00a0 I had visions of grandeur.\u00a0 They gave me a board.\u00a0 The surf board was about forty feet long.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m kidding; it really wasn\u2019t.\u00a0 It was just a long, heavy surfboard and I could not get beyond the breakers.\u00a0 The waves would crash over me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to paddle out to do this, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to paddle out . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you couldn\u2019t get past the waves?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t get past the waves to get out there. . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You sissy!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I wonder if our guest would call me a Aloha!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 From Hawaii!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What do you think?\u00a0 Is he a sissy for not being able to get past the breakers?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, surfing\u2019s a really hard sport.\u00a0 It just really depends on the variables.\u00a0 There are so many different variables going on in the ocean, and sometimes it can be really hard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 You probably could have done it if you had been given the right conditions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well in case you didn\u2019t recognize Bethany\u2019s name, she is the past winner of the NSSA National Championships for Explore Women in 2005.\u00a0 That\u2019s for ladies under the age of 18.\u00a0 That would be like a national championship, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 In surfing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s like the biggest contest for junior competitors in America.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and you did it with a bit of a physical challenge?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How did you do it that was unlike any person who had ever been before you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I had lost my arm when I was 13.\u00a0 I started continuing surfing about three weeks later.\u00a0 I was determined, you know?\u00a0 I just love surfing and it\u2019s what I\u2019ve grown up with.\u00a0 It\u2019s just my way of life.\u00a0 So I started competing again shortly after, and it started going good.\u00a0 I ended up competing in the next Nationals that there was, and made the finals, and the next year I placed really well, too.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s pretty exciting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bethany, your arms are a part of what give you balance when you\u2019re surfing, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I think it\u2019s a combination of your whole body.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were used to surfing and to having both arms available to help you however you needed help and then, following the shark attack that took your arm, three weeks later you were back in the water training again?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just imagining that first day back in the water; this is three weeks after the attack.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what I was thinking. . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, she\u2019s thirteen years old\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was thinking about the question you (Dennis) like to ask people at dinner, \u201cWhat\u2019s the most courageous thing you\u2019ve ever done?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, getting back in the water.\u00a0 Were you at all scared to get back in?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I guess for me it was more that I was fearful I might not be able to surf.\u00a0 I might not be able to do it, you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, that was more of a concern to me than sharks or other things.\u00a0 But I got up my first time surfing, and right at that moment I knew that I would be surfing for a long time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t know where surfing would take me, or what life would be like.\u00a0 I was just happy to be in the water and to be back to doing what I love to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Cheri, as I watched the movie that is about your daughter\u2019s life, <em>Soul Surfer, <\/em>\u00a0I was sitting there and, you don\u2019t know this, but we have a son who at the age of thirteen was stricken with a rare neurological disorder that took away his ability to run.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And, so, I was looking at this movie about Bethany and I was living on parallel tracks as I was watching that scene of her in the movie going back out surfing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat were you feeling as you watched her pick up a board and begin to paddle out into the ocean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was really excited for her because I had that same passion.\u00a0 I learned to surf when I was thirteen, and I surfed until I had three kids and then it got to be too much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I knew that passion in her heart and I was so excited for her when she was able to get back up and get out there and do it again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you scared when she said, \u201cI want to go back\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I was into supporting her in whatever she wanted to do.\u00a0 It\u2019s a really safe spot where she went back out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me ask you to take us back \u2013 you said you had a passion for surfing.\u00a0 You grew up in San Diego and wound up in Hawaii because you loved to surf.\u00a0 That\u2019s where you met your husband, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And in the movie, <em>Soul Surfer,<\/em> which is just about to come out in theaters, you kind of watch the family and it looks like you get up every day and maybe do fifteen minutes of school and then you head out to the beach and everybody surfs together.\u00a0 I mean, that\u2019s kind of the picture you get.\u00a0 You\u2019re a surfing family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know.\u00a0 I love that family!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey\u2019re amazing!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You wish you could be that family?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTell me about growing up with surfing being a part of your life as a family, and then tell me about the faith journey that your family\u2019s been on as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, my husband and I got married and then within six months we became Christians through some other friends, surfer friends that had gotten saved.\u00a0 So, we were really on fire for the Lord.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOur friends had come over as missionaries from Santa Cruz to Kauai the very day that my husband and I got married.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been very tight friends ever since then.\u00a0 The wife, Barbara, actually helped teach my kids as they were growing up with Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, religious education.\u00a0 She was their main teacher, and she was such a gifted teacher.\u00a0 Her husband was a pastor for awhile.\u00a0 We just had so much fun growing up in the Lord with them!\u00a0 We are friends to this day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You homeschooled the kids?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Partially.\u00a0 Once Bethany got older, it was too much of a bus ride into town to go to the school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s a scene in the movie where Helen Hunt, who plays you, says:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Audio Clip from the <\/strong><strong><em>Soul Surfer <\/em><\/strong><strong>movie<\/strong><em>:<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cSo as soon as you girls get black from the water, I\u2019ve got an English assignment all ready for you.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBut it\u2019s a holiday.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIt\u2019s Halloween.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cWe were thinking that we could have a couple extra hours on the waves today?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBecause you didn\u2019t get enough last night?\u00a0 Just say the word and we can enroll you girls in Kapaau where you can ride the bus for 45 minutes each way and do eight hours of straight work during prime surf hours, because I\u2019m alright with that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cActually, I love homeschool.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cMe, too, adore \u2013 totally!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Stay home, do a little bit of work, and then we can hit the waves together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, as you were raising your family, you were pretty solid in Christ and in the Bible.\u00a0 Was there ever a moment after the attack when you questioned God?\u00a0 When you felt like your faith was tested?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason I ask this is because as we watched our son, Samuel, lose the ability to run (he was a very gifted athlete), the disease took away something that allowed him to compete.\u00a0 I almost wondered if, at points, it was harder on Barbara than it was on him at the time.\u00a0 Did you experience any of that as a mother as you had your ambitions and your dreams for your daughter, and your desire to see her excel?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 I wanted to get into some kind of Christian ministry, and every time I would go through a door it would close on me, you know?\u00a0 So, I just kept praying, \u201cLord, your will be done.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we were going up through the competition arena, I would see these children win and they would have a huge stage, a huge platform, to go receive their trophy.\u00a0 There was a significant amount of them \u2013 more than I would have thought \u2013 that gave God the glory and thanked God up on the stage for their win.\u00a0 Then other ones wouldn\u2019t.\u00a0 It was always the Christians who had the better speech; who had more thankfulness and everything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, \u201cWow!\u00a0 That\u2019s it.\u00a0 That\u2019s our venue.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to win; we\u2019ve got to get up there and give God the glory.\u00a0 That was our goal.\u00a0 After that, I would focus more.\u00a0 We would pray a lot for competitions and before heats, and I kind of ran out of words.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t think of what to pray because I\u2019m not really good at talking or anything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo then I said, \u201cOK, let\u2019s just pray for God\u2019s will to be done.\u00a0 Let\u2019s pray for God to bring you into the center of His will.\u201d\u00a0 So we did that for about two weeks and then the shark attack happened.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI believed it was an answer to prayer.\u00a0 She was alive; she was safe.\u00a0\u00a0 It was a miracle she was alive.\u00a0 She shouldn\u2019t have made it.\u00a0 If you saw the board with the bite out of it and everything \u2013 it went all the way. . . It would have ripped out her heart, you know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI felt a peace that we were in God\u2019s hands, and that He was taking care of us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you remember getting the phone call that the attack had happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh yeah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What\u2019s your recollection of that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I got several phone calls.\u00a0 The first one was from Jeff Wallba, who was a friend I hadn\u2019t seen in ten years who had surfed with Tom and I.\u00a0 We bumped into him at the beach when I dropped Bethany off with the Blanchards to go out that morning.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe called me, and I was running out the door.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t going to answer it, and then I thought, \u201cI haven\u2019t seen him in ten years.\u00a0 Why would he call me?\u00a0 Maybe Bethany came in and she wants a ride home \u2013 I\u2019m going to have to go pick her up.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I answered it, and he said, \u201cYour daughter\u2019s been bitten by a shark.\u00a0 You need to go to the hospital.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought he was joking; I didn\u2019t believe him.\u00a0 I said, \u201cYeah, Jeff, right.\u00a0 Come on, what do you want?\u201d\u00a0 But he said, \u201cNo, you need to go to the hospital.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I hung up the phone and I woke up Noah, who was sleeping, and we packed up real fast.\u00a0 The police called and asked, \u201cAre you going to the hospital?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cYes, I\u2019m going.\u00a0 How is she?\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cOh, I can\u2019t tell you.\u00a0 You\u2019ll have to talk to the doctor.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought she just got mangled and she\u2019d have to get stitches, and rehab and everything, and she\u2019d be alright.\u00a0 And so, then, I drove to the hospital and then Hulk calls me (Alana\u2019s father who was out there) and he said, \u201cAre you on your way to the hospital?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cYes. I\u2019ll see you there.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI go, \u201cWell, how is she?\u201d\u00a0 And he said, \u201cYou don\u2019t know?\u201d\u00a0 I go, \u201cNo, how is she?\u201d And he said, \u201cShe lost her arm.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I just fell apart.\u00a0 I had to pull off the road because I was crying.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t get my act together, and then the ambulance went by and I knew she was in there.\u00a0 I got my act together and got back on the road and followed the ambulance to the hospital.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amazing.\u00a0 You had no idea at that point that she was fighting for her life.\u00a0 She had lost so much blood. . . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well I figured she was, so I just followed the ambulance and prayed.\u00a0 The ambulance driver actually was a guy from our church.\u00a0 We knew he was a Christian, but I didn\u2019t know he was in there at that time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When did you know she was out of danger?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 When I saw her; when I went in there \u2013 they let me in within an hour and I was able to see her once I reached the hospital.\u00a0 I saw her and she smiled.\u00a0 I just knew then that she would be alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The way this is portrayed in the film, Bethany appears to have sort of a supernatural calm about her in the midst of all of this; fading in and out of consciousness a little bit, but just at peace almost through the whole thing.\u00a0 Is that how it was?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I would say so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I think that\u2019s one thing that God just instilled in me:\u00a0 to be calm and at peace.\u00a0 I think that when you\u2019re really freaking out, your blood is flowing more, so I might have lost more blood or something like that.\u00a0 I was pretty conscious throughout the whole experience and it\u2019s just really a miracle that I\u2019m alive.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s pretty crazy what I went through, but I\u2019m here today.\u00a0 I\u2019m still surfing.\u00a0 I\u2019m a pro surfer to this day, and now this movie is coming out.\u00a0 It\u2019s been such a crazy chain of events through all of this happening.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 I thought they did a beautiful job portraying in the movie how it really happened.\u00a0 It\u2019s pretty close. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The shark was how long?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Fourteen and a half feet.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was a great white?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, a tiger shark.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tiger shark.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, and there\u2019s this one scene in the movie (because we actually did <em>catch<\/em> the shark in real life) where they get to show that scene.\u00a0 They have the big shark. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019ve got him hanging up on a hook and they match the board to his mouth, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, which we actually really did.\u00a0 Maybe not exactly like that. . . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So the shark actually took a chunk of the board out?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That really happened.\u00a0 Because it is in the movie like you said, Bob.\u00a0 Your dad compared the mouth of this fourteen and a half foot tiger shark to the bite that was out of the surf board.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 That\u2019s on our book cover; you can see that board with the big bite out of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s one of those unthinkable, unimaginable things.\u00a0 You\u2019ve surfed your whole life.\u00a0 Have you ever seen sharks when you\u2019ve been out surfing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Get near you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 About to the wall.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, five feet or six feet?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But big ones like this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Probably a five-footer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I mean I\u2019ve heard of surfers surfing around them, but fourteen and a half feet. . . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bethany, God does have a plan for your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You see it as the answer to a prayer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right, a venue to glorify God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that\u2019s what the movie is all about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what you hope the movie will do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was outstanding how they did that.\u00a0 One of the themes that happened after the attack when we first went back to church and then we went around the world and did venues like in Germany, Australia\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thailand. . . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thailand, New Jersey.\u00a0\u00a0 We would always look for a church and go to church on Sunday \u2013\u00a0 every time they would always play \u201cBlessed be the name of the Lord; He gives and takes away.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Cheri:<\/strong>\u00a0 And so that song was like a theme song God gave us, and so I thought, \u201cWe\u2019ve got to have it in the movie.\u201d\u00a0 And they did it.\u00a0 Sean McNamara did an incredible job.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and as I was watching the movie, that was one of my questions that I was going to ask of you, Bethany.\u00a0 Was that really a song that was part of your life before the accident, or after?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bethany:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, I had probably heard it before the accident, but we kept being reminded over and over again with that song, just knowing that God\u2019s in control and He gives and takes away.\u00a0 He has definitely given more than He has taken away.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s just been interesting to see how God works, and exciting to be able to share His love with people.\u00a0 Yes, it\u2019s been a really good adventure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bethany, the movie also opened with what I guess is your life verse, Jeremiah 29:11:\u00a0 \u201cFor I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord; plans for wholeness and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo someone who is listening right now to this story:\u00a0 we all need to be reminded that God is in control and He is in charge.\u00a0 He takes even the things that someone would mean for evil, or that could be interpreted as bad or evil, and wants to use them for good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe movie <em>Soul Surfer<\/em> really does give God appropriate credit and honor and glory.\u00a0 I\u2019m just grateful personally for your life.\u00a0 First of all, that you survived.\u00a0 But secondly, as you did survive, you left the glory and the honor in the right place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and I think people have probably seen the news reports now that the story is out about how the filmmakers actually considered blurring out the scene where Dennis Quaid\u2019s reading from the Bible and where it said, \u201cHoly Bible,\u201d they blurred that out.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey decided to put it back in.\u00a0 From the opening moments of this movie, where you\u2019re hearing the worship team sing \u201cBlessed Be Your Name,\u201d to the scene in the hospital where the Scriptures are read, that message comes through loud and clear.\u00a0 I hope people will go out and see the film.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s in theaters, or I should say it\u2019s coming to a theater near you this weekend.\u00a0 I hope, if you get a chance, you\u2019ll take some friends and go and see the movie <em>Soul Surfer<\/em> when it hits theaters.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBethany, you were also involved in a project that we\u2019ve been connected with called \u201cCongratulations
