rather we\u2019re living like the conquered\u2014either conquered by our circumstances, conquered by our pain, conquered by our worries or our anxieties instead of \u201cmore than a conqueror\u201d and this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Tuesday, March 15th.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Kay Arthur joins us today to help us understand how we can walk faithfully with Christ, even when the path He has put us on is a painful one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I am under divine assignment here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I have been given my marching orders.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Directly from . . .?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 My daughter.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 OK, alright.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 My daughter Ashley is in the audience.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We have a studio audience joining us for <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Ladies, welcome.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Applause)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Nice to have you all here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Barbara\u2019s here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are a few gentlemen here, too.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I should say, \u201cGentlemen, welcome.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Ashley\u2019s husband Michael is here.\u00a0 Glad to have him.\u00a0 But Kay Arthur is our guest today.\u00a0 So, Kay, this is your fan club, at least for today.\u00a0 Welcome back to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know what?\u00a0 It\u2019s a fan club only because these people have discovered truth for themselves and they have learned that they can study the Bible on their own and get what any theologian would get if they will spend enough time in the Word, comparing Scripture with Scripture, because the Bible has <em>all<\/em> the answers.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, they have the real disease and I know who infected them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 The Holy Spirit.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and He used you to sneeze on them, I think!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKay Arthur is the President \u2013 actually, the Co-President \u2013 of Precepts Ministry, along with her husband Jack.\u00a0 She has written over a hundred books and Bible studies for adults and children.\u00a0 Your ministry spans the globe. And here\u2019s the question Kay, out of all the verses in the Bible, what is your \u201clife verse\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t have a life verse.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You do have a particular fondness for that section of Scripture from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 20. . . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, OK.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That passage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You like that one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right, right, I do.\u00a0 And you know, just from \u201cIn the beginning, God created\u201d and to \u201cHe is coming and His reward is with Him\u201d . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And in between when He created and when He\u2019s coming back, though, there\u2019s something that occurs and that you write about in your latest book <em>When the Hurt Runs Deep<\/em>, and it\u2019s subtitled <em>Healing and Hope for Life\u2019s Desperate Moments<\/em>.\u00a0 There was a story you told in here that, frankly, ticked me off.\u00a0 I got angry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was your response, too .\u00a0 . . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 . . . .as this young lady came to seek your counsel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPaint the picture of how she came up to talk with you; because you didn\u2019t even know this young lady.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 She came to our women\u2019s conference, and after I finished teaching, I think it was on forgiveness.\u00a0 After I finished teaching on forgiveness, she came barreling down the aisle.\u00a0 She\u2019s in a sweatshirt, she\u2019s very overweight.\u00a0 She\u2019s got a big roll around her waist.\u00a0 Her hair is greasy; no make-up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe\u2019s coming barreling down the aisle at me, and her words were, \u201cHow can I forgive my father?!\u201d\u00a0 And I said, \u201cOh, honey, come here and sit down and talk to me.\u201d\u00a0 It was a break, and I turned her back toward the others and just said, \u201cTell me what happened.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo make a long story short, her father had raped her and was sexually abusing her.\u00a0 She had two, no three, children by her father.\u00a0 The first one, they had an abortion.\u00a0 The second one lived, and then died.\u00a0 And then the third one, she moved out of the house with this one, and then she tried to commit suicide.\u00a0 They went for group counseling, and the father said, \u201cYou\u2019re a liar.\u00a0 You\u2019re a little slut.\u00a0 That\u2019s all you are.\u201d\u00a0 You know, he wouldn\u2019t own up to what he had done.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, she tells me all of this, and I looked at her and I said, \u201cThat makes me so angry!\u201d\u00a0 All of the sudden, she was looking at me full in the face and she said, \u201cWhat did you say?\u201d\u00a0 I said (again), \u201cThat makes me <em>so <\/em>angry.\u00a0 God is angry.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it hit her for the first time that there was a judgment, that there was a sentence upon this man because he had done wrong.\u00a0 So, she said, \u201cNo one has ever said that to me.\u201d\u00a0 I explained, and I showed her.\u00a0 And in this book, <em>When the Hurt Runs Deep, <\/em>we look at the places where God says that He is angry, and we find out that God gets angry <em>more<\/em> than any other person in the Bible because He\u2019s righteous and because He\u2019s holy, and because He hates sin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s going to deal with sin.\u00a0 In 2 Thessalonians, it talks about His coming.\u00a0 He is \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tcoming with flaming fire.\u00a0 He is coming to deal with His enemies.\u00a0 He is going to rule with a rod of iron.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How do we deal, though, with the idea that He is sovereign?\u00a0 That He ordains whatsoever comes to pass?\u00a0 It\u2019s like He ordains it, and then gets angry at it when it happens?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that He\u2019s the author of sin, but He lets men act in their sin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 He could restrain them, because He has.\u00a0 He could restrain them.\u00a0 But, because He is God, He\u2019s a redeemer.\u00a0 We have to remember that from the very beginning of the Bible, it\u2019s redemption.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about redemption.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about the Redeemer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, in His sovereignty, He has allowed man to have a kingdom.\u00a0 But He is going to squelch every other kingdom except His, and He is going to rule with a rod of iron.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So He is angry with this father who perpetrated this horrid sin on his daughter?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 And He will judge him, and if that man does not repent, he will spend eternity in the lake of fire where \u201cthe worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched.\u201d\u00a0 And they are an eternal abhorrence to all mankind.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think we can wrap our minds around the fact that each one of us is eternal.\u00a0 Every human being, once they\u2019re born, is eternal.\u00a0 It\u2019s either eternal life or eternal death.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, see, part of this comes \u2013 and, I believe, the reason people aren\u2019t being healed more, and wholly, and fully, and able to move forward \u2013 is because they don\u2019t know God.\u00a0 Jesus said, and He was quoting Deuteronomy 8:3, \u201cMan does not live by bread alone, but by <em>every<\/em> word that comes out of the mouth of God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis book is the words of God!\u00a0 What am I doing?\u00a0 I would say that if you would study the Bible you wouldn\u2019t need <em>When the Hurt Runs Deep, <\/em>you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut if you read <em>When the Hurt Runs Deep, <\/em>the greater portion of this book is Scripture.\u00a0 Why should I give them just clever stories?\u00a0 So much of Christianity today in the United States of America is therapeutic rather than redemptive.\u00a0 I mean, I can give you all these clever things, but it\u2019s not going to heal you.\u00a0 He sent His Word and healed them!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This book is really a reflection, in many regards, of your life and of what you\u2019ve been through \u2013 the valleys you\u2019ve slogged your way through over your lifetime.\u00a0 You make a statement in Chapter 8 that says, \u201cLife changes.\u00a0 God does not.\u201d\u00a0 You go on to ask the question:\u00a0 \u201cHave you ever experienced a hurt so devastating, so demeaning, so confusing, unbearable, and inexplicable that you wish you\u2019d never been born?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, Kay, you\u2019ve experienced some pretty tough things in your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Have you ever experienced something that devastating?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, in the chapter on suicide in this book, I tell about three times that suicide came to my mind.\u00a0 Once before I was saved because of my miserable marriage and my shattered dreams and then twice, after I was saved.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne was because I had been hurt so badly \u2013 so badly \u2013 that I just wanted to get even with that person.\u00a0 The third time was when (this sounds so funny) I was overwhelmed.\u00a0 I was with my mother, taking care of her, and I had to go home.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know that the women\u2019s conference was that weekend.\u00a0 I thought it was later.\u00a0 I was worn out with ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI will tell you, I know my God.\u00a0 I know my God.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know Him to the degree I want to know Him, but I know a lot about Him.\u00a0 I\u2019m accountable for that.\u00a0 I stand in awe.\u00a0 In the morning when I get up and I make my bed and I make my coffee, I sit there.\u00a0 When I sit down in the chair or in my bedroom (it depends on what season of the year it is as to what room I\u2019m in), I just sit there and I think, \u201cYou\u2019re God.\u00a0 And that\u2019s all that matters.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I read my Bible \u2013 and I was reading the other day in Isaiah 40, which is the prophecy about John the Baptist, but then it goes into God, saying \u201cWho measured the sand?,\u201d and \u201cWho did this?\u201d and \u201cWho did that?\u201d\u00a0 Then I thought, \u201cGod, why am I concerned about a single,<em> single thing<\/em>?\u00a0 Why am I concerned about that?\u00a0 Because You\u2019re God!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf I can remember that He is God, that He sits above the circle of the earth!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDo you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been declared to you from the beginning [from Genesis 1:1]?\u00a0 Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?\u00a0 It is He Who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent . . . It is He Who reduces rulers to nothing.\u201d\u00a0 (Isaiah 40:21-22)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t have to sweat the politics of today.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have to think that this ruler or this ruler or this president is going to do it.\u00a0 All I have to do, and I am impassioned about it, is to wake people up and say, \u201cIt is time do what Jesus Christ said:\u00a0 \u201cDeny yourself, take up your cross.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is our hour to live or to die for Jesus Christ and to stand for truth no matter what.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you\u2019ve got to know it, and you\u2019ve got to be righteous, and you\u2019ve got to let go of the things of this earth.\u00a0 We\u2019re just a mess in America.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tExcuse me.\u00a0 How did I get to that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s a fundamental issue that you\u2019re talking about here.\u00a0 I think when we talk about suffering and we talk about hurt, we have to pull back and ask ourselves the question, \u201cDo we believe that God is good and that all His ways are good?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And if we do, that reframes everything, doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 It does.\u00a0 And do I believe that He is so omnipotent and omniscient and sovereign that He is able to take every situation in my life, in your life, in our lives, and cause them \u2013 they\u2019re not good; some of them are hell, horrible, and horrific \u2013 but is He able to take them and cause them to work together for my good, so that I will be like Christ?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the end of Romans 9 \u2013 we stop at Romans 8:28, and we don\u2019t go to 8:29: \u201cwhom He foreknew, He predestined, marked out before hand, to become conformed to the image of His Son.\u00a0 He\u2019s making me like Jesus!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd at the bottom, \u201cWhat can separate me from the love of God?\u201d\u00a0 Then He says, \u201cThere is nothing!\u201d\u00a0 So through Him we overwhelmingly conquer.\u00a0 The problem is we\u2019re not living like conquerors, rather we\u2019re living like the conquered\u2014either conquered by our circumstances, conquered by our pain, conquered by our worries or our anxieties -\u00a0 Instead of \u201cmore than a conqueror\u201d and \u201cthis is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow do we overcome?\u00a0 By our faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But the person who says, \u201cThe pain is so severe; I just can\u2019t believe a good God would let this level of severe pain come my way.\u00a0 How can I really believe God is good with the pain I\u2019m experiencing?\u201d . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 First of all, God says He doesn\u2019t give us anything we cannot bear.\u00a0 So what I have to say is that pain is not more than you can bear, or God wouldn\u2019t let you have it.\u00a0 So what do you know that you need to live by?\u00a0 What is God trying to teach you to let go of, so that you\u2019re studying your Bible and discovering truth for yourself?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, I believe with all my being that God brought you to the Kingdom and FamilyLife to the Kingdom, but also Precept to the Kingdom.\u00a0 There\u2019s no other ministry as I know that is singly focused on teaching children, teens, and adults to study God\u2019s Word for themselves so that they know the whole counsel of God.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been in the Old Testament for years now.\u00a0 It has transformed us, because that is where <em>you meet God<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo when this trial comes, number one, He will not give you anything \u2013 for \u201cthere is no temptation, trial, or testing 1 Corinthians 10:13, and that word is \u201cpeirasmos\u201d which means temptation, trial, or testing] taken you but such as is common to man.\u00a0 You are not unique.\u00a0 God is faithful.\u00a0 He will not permit us to be tested or tried or tempted above what we\u2019re able to bear, but He will make a way of escape.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo you can know that if that trial comes, you can handle it.\u00a0 But see, we want to handle it our way.\u00a0 God\u2019s way is that He sends His Word and heals them.\u00a0 I\u2019m not saying that you don\u2019t take time to get healed.\u00a0 I\u2019m not saying you don\u2019t cry.\u00a0 But I\u2019m saying you dry your tears, and you get up, and you move forward in faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou bring every thought \u2013 I mean, there\u2019s so much in here.\u00a0 That\u2019s why when the hurt runs deepwe run practically through it.\u00a0 But there\u2019s so much that God\u2019s given us to take us through a trial.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I hear you saying, Kay, is what God calls us to is to believe the truth of His Word and the promises He\u2019s laid out there and not live by feelings.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The temptation when we go through difficult times is to implode around how we feel.\u00a0 At points, I feel like it\u2019s a battle between how to think and believe versus being overwhelmed and swamped by my feelings that lead me to unbelief.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, one of the things you did in your book that I\u2019m going to ask you do.\u00a0 I\u2019m looking at the clock.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got two minutes to do this, Kay, so this is going to be a real tough assignment.\u00a0 You give readers some handrails, or hand-holds, of faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I want you to do is just go through these in staccato-like fashion and just encourage that person who is facing a difficult circumstance and just needs to be reminded of these.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Of these seven hand-holds of faith that you get hold of.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 For reasons we may not understand, Number One:\u00a0 God allowed it.\u00a0 God allowed it.\u00a0 I may not understand it.\u00a0 So what am I to do in this situation?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, our tendency is to run toward the arm of flesh.\u00a0 Jeremiah says it will not hold.\u00a0 You are to seek the companionship of the Lord.\u00a0 There is no Comforter in all the world.\u00a0 It\u2019s His Name!\u00a0 In Isaiah, He is Wonderful Counselor, He is Mighty God.\u00a0 He is there to counsel us.\u00a0 Face the facts.\u00a0 Don\u2019t deny what happened.\u00a0 Face it, actually face-to-face.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got God at your side, so you can deal with it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen go ahead and grieve.\u00a0 Weep and wail.\u00a0 Express your frustration, your anger, your disappointment.\u00a0 I don\u2019t hide anything from God, because He knows it anyway.\u00a0 So just tell Him.\u00a0 Lay it all out there.\u00a0 But then, He\u2019s at your side, so what does He say about it?\u00a0 Then don\u2019t continually revisit the details.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was told by my mother when my dad died unexpectedly.\u00a0 He wished he could have talked to you (Dennis).\u00a0 He was an Episcopal priest, and once I became a Christian, we didn\u2019t have what we had before.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI started to remember it and then I thought, \u201cI\u2019m not going to think about that.\u00a0 I can\u2019t change it.\u00a0 I can\u2019t alter it.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to make me miserable.\u201d\u00a0 Paul said, \u201cForgetting those things that are behind.\u201d\u00a0 So don\u2019t revisit the details.\u00a0 There\u2019s a whole chapter on pulling the plug on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me just interrupt you there because I really like that point.\u00a0 Another way of saying the same thing would be, \u201cDon\u2019t rehearse the hurt.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right!\u00a0 That\u2019s right because what you think on . . . Now with all the research on the brain, we know there are <em>chemicals<\/em>.\u00a0 God knew the brain before man ever discovered it and the hormones.\u00a0 That\u2019s why He tells us:\u00a0 \u201cCount it all joy\u201d and \u201cIn everything give thanks.\u201d\u00a0 He gives us these promises of what we are to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTime and practicing His truth <em>will bring healing.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>It <em>will bring healing<\/em> if you practice the truth.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to <em>live<\/em> by every word!\u00a0 And then, finally, when I see that there\u2019s a redemption, like my immoral background \u2013 I got mad at God one day on the mission field and I thought, \u201cWhere were You when I was a teenager?\u00a0 Here I\u2019m teaching these teenagers, I\u2019m married twice.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a divorce in my background.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a suicide.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got two boys who don\u2019t have their natural father.\u00a0 This is not what I wanted.\u00a0 This is not what I ordered.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd God just said, \u201cIf you\u2019ll quit moaning and groaning about your past, and you\u2019ll share it, I\u2019ll use it.\u201d\u00a0 Every time somebody comes up to me, male and female, and says, \u201cThank you for being vulnerable.\u00a0 Thank you for sharing.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been there\u201d or,\u00a0 \u201cYour life is like mine\u201d and, \u201cThank you for helping me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what?\u00a0 That\u2019s what it\u2019s all about.\u00a0 That\u2019s what it\u2019s all about!\u00a0 So you comfort others with the comfort that God gave to you.\u00a0 No trial \u2013 don\u2019t waste your sorrows \u2013 no trial is without purpose.\u00a0 No sorrow goes deeper than the love of God and the purpose and calling of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I like that you characterize all seven of these as \u201chand-holds of faith,\u201d because sometimes I think we think of these matters, or don\u2019t think of them, in terms of being faith.\u00a0 But as I was reading your book, I thought about the conclusion that Job came to, and it\u2019s really the conclusion of your book over and over and over again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn Job 42, Job basically said this:\u00a0 \u201cAs a result of everything I\u2019ve suffered, everything I\u2019ve felt, everything I\u2019ve seen, all the losses I\u2019ve experienced, he said, \u2018Before I had all of this happen, I knew about You a little bit, God.\u2019\u00a0 But <em>now <\/em>he says, \u2018I see You.\u00a0 I know You.\u00a0 I\u2019ve experienced You.\u00a0 And I\u2019ve found You to be trustworthy.\u2019 \u201c\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s really what you\u2019re pointing the reader to do \u2013 to put your hand in God\u2019s hand and take the book \u2013 not your book, but <em>His <\/em>book, the Bible \u2013 and apply it to your life by faith, and not live by those feelings.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think it does help when we have someone who has been down the path ahead of us; who has walked in the dark valleys, who turns to us and says, \u201cHere\u2019s what I have found is true.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what the Scriptures say.\u201d\u00a0 They point us back in that direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKay, \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKay Arthur is the President \u2013 actually, the Co-President \u2013 of Precepts Ministry, along with her husband Jack.\u00a0 She has written over a hundred books and Bible studies for adults and children.\u00a0 Your ministry spans the globe. And here\u2019s the question Kay, out of all the verses in the Bible, what is your \u201clife verse\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t have a life verse.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You do have a particular fondness for that section of Scripture from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 20. . . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, OK.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That passage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You like that one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right, right, I do.\u00a0 And you know, just from \u201cIn the beginning, God created\u201d and to \u201cHe is coming and His reward is with Him\u201d . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And in between when He created and when He\u2019s coming back, though, there\u2019s something that occurs and that you write about in your latest book <em>When the Hurt Runs Deep<\/em>, and it\u2019s subtitled <em>Healing and Hope for Life\u2019s Desperate Moments<\/em>.\u00a0 There was a story you told in here that, frankly, ticked me off.\u00a0 I got angry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was your response, too .\u00a0 . . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 . . . .as this young lady came to seek your counsel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPaint the picture of how she came up to talk with you; because you didn\u2019t even know this young lady.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 She came to our women\u2019s conference, and after I finished teaching, I think it was on forgiveness.\u00a0 After I finished teaching on forgiveness, she came barreling down the aisle.\u00a0 She\u2019s in a sweatshirt, she\u2019s very overweight.\u00a0 She\u2019s got a big roll around her waist.\u00a0 Her hair is greasy; no make-up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe\u2019s coming barreling down the aisle at me, and her words were, \u201cHow can I forgive my father?!\u201d\u00a0 And I said, \u201cOh, honey, come here and sit down and talk to me.\u201d\u00a0 It was a break, and I turned her back toward the others and just said, \u201cTell me what happened.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTo make a long story short, her father had raped her and was sexually abusing her.\u00a0 She had two, no three, children by her father.\u00a0 The first one, they had an abortion.\u00a0 The second one lived, and then died.\u00a0 And then the third one, she moved out of the house with this one, and then she tried to commit suicide.\u00a0 They went for group counseling, and the father said, \u201cYou\u2019re a liar.\u00a0 You\u2019re a little slut.\u00a0 That\u2019s all you are.\u201d\u00a0 You know, he wouldn\u2019t own up to what he had done.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, she tells me all of this, and I looked at her and I said, \u201cThat makes me so angry!\u201d\u00a0 All of the sudden, she was looking at me full in the face and she said, \u201cWhat did you say?\u201d\u00a0 I said (again), \u201cThat makes me <em>so <\/em>angry.\u00a0 God is angry.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it hit her for the first time that there was a judgment, that there was a sentence upon this man because he had done wrong.\u00a0 So, she said, \u201cNo one has ever said that to me.\u201d\u00a0 I explained, and I showed her.\u00a0 And in this book, <em>When the Hurt Runs Deep, <\/em>we look at the places where God says that He is angry, and we find out that God gets angry <em>more<\/em> than any other person in the Bible because He\u2019s righteous and because He\u2019s holy, and because He hates sin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe\u2019s going to deal with sin.\u00a0 In 2 Thessalonians, it talks about His coming.\u00a0 He is \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tcoming with flaming fire.\u00a0 He is coming to deal with His enemies.\u00a0 He is going to rule with a rod of iron.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How do we deal, though, with the idea that He is sovereign?\u00a0 That He ordains whatsoever comes to pass?\u00a0 It\u2019s like He ordains it, and then gets angry at it when it happens?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that He\u2019s the author of sin, but He lets men act in their sin.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 He could restrain them, because He has.\u00a0 He could restrain them.\u00a0 But, because He is God, He\u2019s a redeemer.\u00a0 We have to remember that from the very beginning of the Bible, it\u2019s redemption.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about redemption.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about the Redeemer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, in His sovereignty, He has allowed man to have a kingdom.\u00a0 But He is going to squelch every other kingdom except His, and He is going to rule with a rod of iron.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So He is angry with this father who perpetrated this horrid sin on his daughter?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 And He will judge him, and if that man does not repent, he will spend eternity in the lake of fire where \u201cthe worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched.\u201d\u00a0 And they are an eternal abhorrence to all mankind.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think we can wrap our minds around the fact that each one of us is eternal.\u00a0 Every human being, once they\u2019re born, is eternal.\u00a0 It\u2019s either eternal life or eternal death.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, see, part of this comes \u2013 and, I believe, the reason people aren\u2019t being healed more, and wholly, and fully, and able to move forward \u2013 is because they don\u2019t know God.\u00a0 Jesus said, and He was quoting Deuteronomy 8:3, \u201cMan does not live by bread alone, but by <em>every<\/em> word that comes out of the mouth of God.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis book is the words of God!\u00a0 What am I doing?\u00a0 I would say that if you would study the Bible you wouldn\u2019t need <em>When the Hurt Runs Deep, <\/em>you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut if you read <em>When the Hurt Runs Deep, <\/em>the greater portion of this book is Scripture.\u00a0 Why should I give them just clever stories?\u00a0 So much of Christianity today in the United States of America is therapeutic rather than redemptive.\u00a0 I mean, I can give you all these clever things, but it\u2019s not going to heal you.\u00a0 He sent His Word and healed them!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This book is really a reflection, in many regards, of your life and of what you\u2019ve been through \u2013 the valleys you\u2019ve slogged your way through over your lifetime.\u00a0 You make a statement in Chapter 8 that says, \u201cLife changes.\u00a0 God does not.\u201d\u00a0 You go on to ask the question:\u00a0 \u201cHave you ever experienced a hurt so devastating, so demeaning, so confusing, unbearable, and inexplicable that you wish you\u2019d never been born?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, Kay, you\u2019ve experienced some pretty tough things in your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Have you ever experienced something that devastating?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, in the chapter on suicide in this book, I tell about three times that suicide came to my mind.\u00a0 Once before I was saved because of my miserable marriage and my shattered dreams and then twice, after I was saved.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne was because I had been hurt so badly \u2013 so badly \u2013 that I just wanted to get even with that person.\u00a0 The third time was when (this sounds so funny) I was overwhelmed.\u00a0 I was with my mother, taking care of her, and I had to go home.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know that the women\u2019s conference was that weekend.\u00a0 I thought it was later.\u00a0 I was worn out with ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI will tell you, I know my God.\u00a0 I know my God.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know Him to the degree I want to know Him, but I know a lot about Him.\u00a0 I\u2019m accountable for that.\u00a0 I stand in awe.\u00a0 In the morning when I get up and I make my bed and I make my coffee, I sit there.\u00a0 When I sit down in the chair or in my bedroom (it depends on what season of the year it is as to what room I\u2019m in), I just sit there and I think, \u201cYou\u2019re God.\u00a0 And that\u2019s all that matters.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I read my Bible \u2013 and I was reading the other day in Isaiah 40, which is the prophecy about John the Baptist, but then it goes into God, saying \u201cWho measured the sand?,\u201d and \u201cWho did this?\u201d and \u201cWho did that?\u201d\u00a0 Then I thought, \u201cGod, why am I concerned about a single,<em> single thing<\/em>?\u00a0 Why am I concerned about that?\u00a0 Because You\u2019re God!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf I can remember that He is God, that He sits above the circle of the earth!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDo you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been declared to you from the beginning [from Genesis 1:1]?\u00a0 Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?\u00a0 It is He Who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent . . . It is He Who reduces rulers to nothing.\u201d\u00a0 (Isaiah 40:21-22)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI don\u2019t have to sweat the politics of today.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have to think that this ruler or this ruler or this president is going to do it.\u00a0 All I have to do, and I am impassioned about it, is to wake people up and say, \u201cIt is time do what Jesus Christ said:\u00a0 \u201cDeny yourself, take up your cross.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is our hour to live or to die for Jesus Christ and to stand for truth no matter what.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you\u2019ve got to know it, and you\u2019ve got to be righteous, and you\u2019ve got to let go of the things of this earth.\u00a0 We\u2019re just a mess in America.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tExcuse me.\u00a0 How did I get to that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s a fundamental issue that you\u2019re talking about here.\u00a0 I think when we talk about suffering and we talk about hurt, we have to pull back and ask ourselves the question, \u201cDo we believe that God is good and that all His ways are good?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And if we do, that reframes everything, doesn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 It does.\u00a0 And do I believe that He is so omnipotent and omniscient and sovereign that He is able to take every situation in my life, in your life, in our lives, and cause them \u2013 they\u2019re not good; some of them are hell, horrible, and horrific \u2013 but is He able to take them and cause them to work together for my good, so that I will be like Christ?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the end of Romans 9 \u2013 we stop at Romans 8:28, and we don\u2019t go to 8:29: \u201cwhom He foreknew, He predestined, marked out before hand, to become conformed to the image of His Son.\u00a0 He\u2019s making me like Jesus!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd at the bottom, \u201cWhat can separate me from the love of God?\u201d\u00a0 Then He says, \u201cThere is nothing!\u201d\u00a0 So through Him we overwhelmingly conquer.\u00a0 The problem is we\u2019re not living like conquerors, rather we\u2019re living like the conquered\u2014either conquered by our circumstances, conquered by our pain, conquered by our worries or our anxieties -\u00a0 Instead of \u201cmore than a conqueror\u201d and \u201cthis is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow do we overcome?\u00a0 By our faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But the person who says, \u201cThe pain is so severe; I just can\u2019t believe a good God would let this level of severe pain come my way.\u00a0 How can I really believe God is good with the pain I\u2019m experiencing?\u201d . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 First of all, God says He doesn\u2019t give us anything we cannot bear.\u00a0 So what I have to say is that pain is not more than you can bear, or God wouldn\u2019t let you have it.\u00a0 So what do you know that you need to live by?\u00a0 What is God trying to teach you to let go of, so that you\u2019re studying your Bible and discovering truth for yourself?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, I believe with all my being that God brought you to the Kingdom and FamilyLife to the Kingdom, but also Precept to the Kingdom.\u00a0 There\u2019s no other ministry as I know that is singly focused on teaching children, teens, and adults to study God\u2019s Word for themselves so that they know the whole counsel of God.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been in the Old Testament for years now.\u00a0 It has transformed us, because that is where <em>you meet God<\/em>.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo when this trial comes, number one, He will not give you anything \u2013 for \u201cthere is no temptation, trial, or testing 1 Corinthians 10:13, and that word is \u201cpeirasmos\u201d which means temptation, trial, or testing] taken you but such as is common to man.\u00a0 You are not unique.\u00a0 God is faithful.\u00a0 He will not permit us to be tested or tried or tempted above what we\u2019re able to bear, but He will make a way of escape.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo you can know that if that trial comes, you can handle it.\u00a0 But see, we want to handle it our way.\u00a0 God\u2019s way is that He sends His Word and heals them.\u00a0 I\u2019m not saying that you don\u2019t take time to get healed.\u00a0 I\u2019m not saying you don\u2019t cry.\u00a0 But I\u2019m saying you dry your tears, and you get up, and you move forward in faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou bring every thought \u2013 I mean, there\u2019s so much in here.\u00a0 That\u2019s why when the hurt runs deepwe run practically through it.\u00a0 But there\u2019s so much that God\u2019s given us to take us through a trial.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I hear you saying, Kay, is what God calls us to is to believe the truth of His Word and the promises He\u2019s laid out there and not live by feelings.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The temptation when we go through difficult times is to implode around how we feel.\u00a0 At points, I feel like it\u2019s a battle between how to think and believe versus being overwhelmed and swamped by my feelings that lead me to unbelief.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now, one of the things you did in your book that I\u2019m going to ask you do.\u00a0 I\u2019m looking at the clock.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got two minutes to do this, Kay, so this is going to be a real tough assignment.\u00a0 You give readers some handrails, or hand-holds, of faith.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat I want you to do is just go through these in staccato-like fashion and just encourage that person who is facing a difficult circumstance and just needs to be reminded of these.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Of these seven hand-holds of faith that you get hold of.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 For reasons we may not understand, Number One:\u00a0 God allowed it.\u00a0 God allowed it.\u00a0 I may not understand it.\u00a0 So what am I to do in this situation?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSee, our tendency is to run toward the arm of flesh.\u00a0 Jeremiah says it will not hold.\u00a0 You are to seek the companionship of the Lord.\u00a0 There is no Comforter in all the world.\u00a0 It\u2019s His Name!\u00a0 In Isaiah, He is Wonderful Counselor, He is Mighty God.\u00a0 He is there to counsel us.\u00a0 Face the facts.\u00a0 Don\u2019t deny what happened.\u00a0 Face it, actually face-to-face.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got God at your side, so you can deal with it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen go ahead and grieve.\u00a0 Weep and wail.\u00a0 Express your frustration, your anger, your disappointment.\u00a0 I don\u2019t hide anything from God, because He knows it anyway.\u00a0 So just tell Him.\u00a0 Lay it all out there.\u00a0 But then, He\u2019s at your side, so what does He say about it?\u00a0 Then don\u2019t continually revisit the details.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was told by my mother when my dad died unexpectedly.\u00a0 He wished he could have talked to you (Dennis).\u00a0 He was an Episcopal priest, and once I became a Christian, we didn\u2019t have what we had before.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI started to remember it and then I thought, \u201cI\u2019m not going to think about that.\u00a0 I can\u2019t change it.\u00a0 I can\u2019t alter it.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to make me miserable.\u201d\u00a0 Paul said, \u201cForgetting those things that are behind.\u201d\u00a0 So don\u2019t revisit the details.\u00a0 There\u2019s a whole chapter on pulling the plug on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me just interrupt you there because I really like that point.\u00a0 Another way of saying the same thing would be, \u201cDon\u2019t rehearse the hurt.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right!\u00a0 That\u2019s right because what you think on . . . Now with all the research on the brain, we know there are <em>chemicals<\/em>.\u00a0 God knew the brain before man ever discovered it and the hormones.\u00a0 That\u2019s why He tells us:\u00a0 \u201cCount it all joy\u201d and \u201cIn everything give thanks.\u201d\u00a0 He gives us these promises of what we are to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTime and practicing His truth <em>will bring healing.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>It <em>will bring healing<\/em> if you practice the truth.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to <em>live<\/em> by every word!\u00a0 And then, finally, when I see that there\u2019s a redemption, like my immoral background \u2013 I got mad at God one day on the mission field and I thought, \u201cWhere were You when I was a teenager?\u00a0 Here I\u2019m teaching these teenagers, I\u2019m married twice.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a divorce in my background.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a suicide.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got two boys who don\u2019t have their natural father.\u00a0 This is not what I wanted.\u00a0 This is not what I ordered.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd God just said, \u201cIf you\u2019ll quit moaning and groaning about your past, and you\u2019ll share it, I\u2019ll use it.\u201d\u00a0 Every time somebody comes up to me, male and female, and says, \u201cThank you for being vulnerable.\u00a0 Thank you for sharing.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been there\u201d or,\u00a0 \u201cYour life is like mine\u201d and, \u201cThank you for helping me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what?\u00a0 That\u2019s what it\u2019s all about.\u00a0 That\u2019s what it\u2019s all about!\u00a0 So you comfort others with the comfort that God gave to you.\u00a0 No trial \u2013 don\u2019t waste your sorrows \u2013 no trial is without purpose.\u00a0 No sorrow goes deeper than the love of God and the purpose and calling of God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I like that you characterize all seven of these as \u201chand-holds of faith,\u201d because sometimes I think we think of these matters, or don\u2019t think of them, in terms of being faith.\u00a0 But as I was reading your book, I thought about the conclusion that Job came to, and it\u2019s really the conclusion of your book over and over and over again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn Job 42, Job basically said this:\u00a0 \u201cAs a result of everything I\u2019ve suffered, everything I\u2019ve felt, everything I\u2019ve seen, all the losses I\u2019ve experienced, he said, \u2018Before I had all of this happen, I knew about You a little bit, God.\u2019\u00a0 But <em>now <\/em>he says, \u2018I see You.\u00a0 I know You.\u00a0 I\u2019ve experienced You.\u00a0 And I\u2019ve found You to be trustworthy.\u2019 \u201c\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s really what you\u2019re pointing the reader to do \u2013 to put your hand in God\u2019s hand and take the book \u2013 not your book, but <em>His <\/em>book, the Bible \u2013 and apply it to your life by faith, and not live by those feelings.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kay:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think it does help when we have someone who has been down the path ahead of us; who has walked in the dark valleys, who turns to us and says, \u201cHere\u2019s what I have found is true.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what the Scriptures say.\u201d\u00a0 They point us back in that direction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tKay,
