\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, Shaunti Feldhahn knows how you feel.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t matter if you are a young woman right out of college trying to figure out what to do with your life, or if you\u2019re the single mom, or you\u2019re the career executive, or you\u2019re the empty-nester, or whatever.\u00a0 We as women are balancing and juggling so much and it\u2019s like, \u201cHow do I balance my life?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, you know what?\u00a0 God has given us this prescription, the Bible.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how you do it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, March 4th.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to talk today about women, about lives, about balance \u2013 with our guest Shaunti Feldhahn.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAre you feeling more in touch with your feminine side as a result of all this conversation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are you talking about being in touch with Barbara?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I guess that is your feminine side, isn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that is my feminine side!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd the answer is, \u201cYes.\u201d\u00a0 I am feeling much more equipped to encourage her in life.\u00a0 I\u2019ve got an assignment there, you know?\u00a0 I\u2019m to be a good steward of my wife\u2019s life.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t mean that I own her.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that she\u2019s my possession.\u00a0 But as her husband, God\u2019s given me the responsibility to make sure she is not wasted.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what nurture and cherish is supposed to look like, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is, and we\u2019ve been helped all this week by a wise woman.\u00a0 Shaunti Feldhahn joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Shaunti, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Good to be with you, as always.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Shaunti is the featured speaker on a brand new 8-session video series called \u201cLifeReady Woman.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s also the name of a book, <em>LifeReady Woman<\/em>, as well, and you\u2019re all about equipping women in small group Bible studies with this video series around their major calling in life.\u00a0 The major assignments God has for her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s basically a biblical prescription for life balance, and a big part of that is how are you, personally, as a woman, designed?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And part of that design is that a woman step out in faith and make sure she is using her gifts and abilities wisely.\u00a0 Interestingly, you\u2019ve created this Bible study for women to be led by women.\u00a0 You\u2019re talking about tapping into some women who have the ability to organize and form small groups and use this video and host it in their church or their community.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 There\u2019s basically a grid that we\u2019ve been talking about all week, of sort of, \u201cWhat is the biblical design and calling that we can live our life by, and make these choices as we\u2019re juggling all these things in life?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, one of them we talked about was being designed to leave and cleave, and be fruitful and multiply \u2013 the job description that God gave Adam and Eve.\u00a0 But the third one is this idea of subdue and rule.\u00a0 Subdue the earth and rule over it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt basically means:\u00a0 Advance God\u2019s Kingdom.\u00a0 Do it in ways that are specific to your gifting.\u00a0 And do it beyond the home.\u00a0 This is not <em>in <\/em>the home. It is beyond the home, and into the world.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor some women, it may mean that one of the things that is their gifting is they love organizing.\u00a0 These are the women who end up facilitating the Bible studies in the churches when they do this stuff, because that\u2019s an example of what lights them up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the kind of stuff that makes them go, \u201cOh, wow.\u00a0 I never thought of that.\u201d\u00a0 But that is a \u201csubdue and rule\u201d calling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Does a woman subdue and rule differently than a man does?\u00a0 Or is this one of those areas where it\u2019s just basically, \u201cWhat\u2019s your gift?,\u201d and you do it according to your gifting?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, gosh, I think probably both.\u00a0 I think that we in the Christian community sometimes don\u2019t really encourage women to use their gifts in this way.\u00a0 We kind of, as women (and I don\u2019t think people necessarily say it overtly), think, \u201cWait a minute.\u00a0 Aren\u2019t I supposed to, while my kids are small, just be a stay-at-home mom and not do any of this other stuff?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reality is that God has told us that these are the three things we are designed for.\u00a0 If we <em>don\u2019t <\/em>do them, life won\u2019t work.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As you\u2019ve been talking, I\u2019ve been smiling because I couldn\u2019t help but think about, over the past 34 years, how many of our Weekend to Remember\u00ae marriage getaways have been hosted by couples who brought our conference to their community.\u00a0 I say \u201ccouples,\u201d but actually if you looked at who really does the work. . . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me take a guess!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it\u2019s the women who have gotten the brochures to the bookstores and to the churches.\u00a0 They\u2019ve made the phone calls and networked with other people.\u00a0 There are some real heroes across the country:\u00a0 couples who cared about the marriages and families in their community.\u00a0 But the real driving force \u2013 I mean the one who carried the mail, literally - was the woman, who was making those calls and really putting in hundreds, or maybe even thousands, of hours on behalf of marriages and families.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that is such a great example, Dennis, because I can guarantee you that a lot of those women would call themselves \u201cstay-at-home moms.\u201d\u00a0 The reality is that for any woman, regardless of whether they work or don\u2019t work, God has given you some individual skills, individual abilities, for a purpose.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is this <em>great <\/em>passage that applies to men and women.\u00a0 It\u2019s in Ephesians -\u00a0 Ephesians 2:10 (and I love this comment).\u00a0 He says, \u201cWe are God\u2019s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which He prepared in advance for us to do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have this picture of a Creator sitting down and sort of piecing you together <em>just<\/em> perfectly, because He had in mind all this stuff He wants you to do with this specific set of giftings.\u00a0 If you, as a woman, don\u2019t do those things, then you\u2019re going to feel incomplete.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to feel like you\u2019re not functioning in the way you were designed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo don\u2019t <em>ever <\/em>let anybody tell you \u201cYou\u2019re not allowed to do that stuff.\u201d\u00a0 Because that\u2019s what God has gifted you for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If a wife says to you, \u201cYou know, in this season of life where I\u2019ve got young kids and I\u2019m a mom, I am perfectly contented to make those two priorities my sole responsibilities.\u00a0 I\u2019ll save that engagement outside for a later season, but right now I\u2019m happy to just focus on these two areas\u201d. . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Like husband and kids?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Do you say, \u201cOK, that\u2019s fine\u201d?\u00a0 Or do you say, \u201cNo, you need to have something going on out in the kingdom\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, here\u2019s the way that it looks like God has designed us (from the Scriptures).\u00a0 First of all, there are seasons of life, OK?\u00a0 You are going to fulfill what we call the three \u201ccore callings\u201d:\u00a0 the \u201cleave and cleave,\u201d \u201cbe fruitful and multiply,\u201d and \u201csubdue and rule.\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019re going to fulfill them differently depending on your season of life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have two small children.\u00a0 There are just things that I can\u2019t do.\u00a0 But, you know what?\u00a0 The thing for us as women to realize is that it\u2019s all about this biblical prescription.\u00a0 What will make us thrive?\u00a0 What will give us peace?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what?\u00a0 Sometimes, there are things that God has called us to do that would light us up and that would actually, if we did them to advance the Kingdom, make us more relaxed rather than more stressed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes, if something\u2019s going to make you more stressed, there\u2019s a problem.\u00a0 Don\u2019t do that.\u00a0 But there are some things that you may be <em>doing <\/em>more in some ways, but it doesn\u2019t <em>feel<\/em> like it, because it\u2019s how you\u2019re designed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me give you an example.\u00a0 When we were doing the test Bible study for the <em>LifeReady Woman<\/em> group, it was at a church in suburban Atlanta and we did the, you know, evening version of the study.\u00a0 There was a woman who came in each time \u2013 and we didn\u2019t ask her to do this \u2013 but she just showed up each time to supplement the coffee that the church provided.\u00a0 She kept showing up with a pan of shortbread, or brownies one day, and cookies the next time.\u00a0 Nobody asked her.\u00a0 She just did it!\u00a0 She loved it, and she got all these great comments.\u00a0 She just smiled.\u00a0 It kind of lit her up!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe was this very, very busy stay-at-home mom.\u00a0 She had all these kids.\u00a0 But this was something that relaxed her.\u00a0 It was something that she loved to do.\u00a0 We realized that it was an example of a gift of hospitality that God has given her.\u00a0 There are some people who would say, \u201cOhhh, it\u2019s my night for the brownies.\u201d\u00a0 And that\u2019s an example of something that is <em>not<\/em> your gift.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 But she was functioning <em>in<\/em> her gift.\u00a0 It naturally came out of her.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t feel like a burden.\u00a0 It was a way for her to bless all of these other women in this group.\u00a0 To her, it seemed so little, and she was shocked when she realized, \u201cOh my gosh, that\u2019s an example of a gifting I can use.\u00a0 Not just to bring brownies to a Bible study group, but to invite somebody over after church on Sunday when they\u2019re new.\u00a0 I could have a little newcomers\u2019 thing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, some people would say, \u201cOh, that sounds awful,\u201d because it\u2019s not their gift.\u00a0 But for her, it lit her up.\u00a0 It was something that felt like she was flowing in that.\u00a0 That\u2019s an example of what I\u2019m talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As I\u2019m listening to you, I\u2019m thinking it\u2019s not only a matter of gifts.\u00a0 That\u2019s certainly an important part of it, but it\u2019s also a matter of the hard-wired passion that God has put in the heart of a woman.\u00a0 For instance, Barbara, since we became empty-nesters a few years ago, has dusted off her art easel and has begun painting again.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tInitially, it started with watercolors and now she\u2019s off into oils.\u00a0 A couple of weeks ago, I gave her the gift of getting away with a famous artist for five days along with a group of other people.\u00a0 They all painted landscapes, they painted a church house, they painted a stream.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to tell you that when she came back, she was energized.\u00a0 She was refreshed.\u00a0 She had gone off and done something that, (A) she was gifted to do but also (B) something she was passionate about.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara is passionate about beauty.\u00a0 In fact, I\u2019ve made the statement about her, \u201cWherever she goes, she makes things beautiful.\u201d\u00a0 She not only has personal beauty, but she\u2019s constantly bringing order - which means I can\u2019t leave the shoes in the living room. . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sorry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 . . . after I\u2019ve read the paper.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the point is that, as a woman, I think it\u2019s important to take a step back and do an inventory of what your gifts are; but also take a step back and ask, \u201cWhat are you really passionate about?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s a great way of putting it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then to ask the question, once I know gifts and passions, \u201cHow can I use those to advance the Kingdom?\u201d\u00a0 Because ultimately, that\u2019s where you\u2019re trying to point women \u2013 to Kingdom activity and to Kingdom involvement, not just, \u201cGee, I like this, so I\u2019ll do it.\u201d But, \u201cI want to put this to work so that I\u2019m investing in what God\u2019s called me to.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and right there is why we created this study.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t just an academic exercise.\u00a0 It was because we as women are balancing and juggling <em>so much<\/em>.\u00a0 It\u2019s like, \u201cHow do I balance my life?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, you know what?\u00a0 God has given us this prescription, the Bible.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how you do it!\u00a0 It\u2019s going to look different for every woman.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to look different at different seasons of life.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to just look different.\u00a0 But it\u2019s going to apply to everybody.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019re a young woman right out of college trying to figure out what to do with your life, or if you\u2019re the single mom or you\u2019re the career executive, or you\u2019re the empty-nester, or whatever.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to look different.\u00a0 The reality is that every woman is juggling, and this gives them a way to juggle.\u00a0 A way to make the choices that just fit with your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alright, speak to Bob.\u00a0 Mary Ann\u2019s about to become an empty-nester.\u00a0 And he\u2019s about to realize that he\u2019s really going to have to re-steward Mary Ann in some fresh ways.\u00a0 Now I know you\u2019re not an expert in it. . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She\u2019s talking to women!\u00a0 Will you leave me out of this one?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are men who listen every day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are a lot of men who are listening.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTalk to a man about how he can better help his wife and be that steward, Shaunti.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know, one of the things that\u2019s really, really important is that every woman feels in a way, no matter how liberated and strong she is, like she needs her husband\u2019s permission and blessing to do the stuff that she really wants to do and feels called to do.\u00a0 It\u2019s one of the reasons why, in the study, we focus a lot on the idea of melding with your husband and leaving and cleaving and what that looks like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause if a woman isn\u2019t supported in that way, nothing else is going to work.\u00a0 I will tell you, as a woman, when you\u2019re at odds with your husband over something, it\u2019s like nothing is right with the world until that is resolved.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you may not realize it, but you guys have an immense amount of power to really encourage and make your women feel like they can fly, or make them feel like, \u201cIs this OK?\u201d.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLike I said, it may not seem like the liberated modern thing, but it\u2019s in the heart of every woman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just wondering.\u00a0 It appears obvious that writing and speaking would be right in the center of your passion\/gift mix, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, you could probably say that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what energizes you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s what energizes me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s the stewarding of your gifts.\u00a0 Did you recognize that from the start?\u00a0 When you graduated from Harvard, did you say, \u201cI know exactly where I\u2019m supposed to be deploying my giftedness?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know it\u2019s so funny.\u00a0 I was an analyst on Wall Street.\u00a0 And where it started was nurturing this gifting of analysis <em>first<\/em>.\u00a0 And then God gave me the opportunity to step out into writing.\u00a0 Suddenly, it was that, \u201cOh, wow\u201d feeling.\u00a0 I was now analyzing relationships and people.\u00a0 It was a new \u201cAha!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat process led me into this space that I feel like I\u2019m built for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 About ten years ago, God gave me this miraculous entr\u00e9e into the publishing world.\u00a0 I really felt like I had a gift for writing and speaking.\u00a0 It was a field I could work around my children and still bring in income to pay off student loans, which was really necessary.\u00a0 After \u201c9-11,\u201d Jeff\u2019s company had gone out of business owing us ten months of salary.\u00a0 We were going through a terrible time financially.\u00a0 I felt so strongly that God was asking me to write a particular novel, on a particular subject.\u00a0 I was convinced that God would make this novel a best-seller, and \u2018Ta-da!\u00a0 We\u2019d be saved!\u2019\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI poured myself into this novel for a year and it hit the shelves and sold very few copies.\u00a0 After a year of work, it actually <em>lost <\/em>us money.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t understand it.\u00a0 Jeff and I were hitting the pavement looking for work.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t know how we were going to pay our mortgage.\u00a0 We had two toddlers, and I was so upset.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2018God, why did you have me spend that whole year writing that novel?\u00a0 I did so much research and no one will ever see it.\u00a0 It did no good!\u2019\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA few months later, I was at the Christian book convention in Orlando, paying my own way to get there, still trying to convince someone - anyone - to do a radio interview or a mention in the newspaper.\u00a0 Anything to promote the book!\u00a0 And there was no interest.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt looked like all that work, all that research, all that use of my gifts that I thought God had told me to do, was wasted.\u00a0 But I was looking at it as if today\u2019s circumstances are all that matters.\u00a0 And God has so much of the bigger picture!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, in that novel, one of my main characters was a man.\u00a0 I had spent a year interviewing men to learn what thoughts to put into my character\u2019s head.\u00a0 I was so surprised by what I was learning.\u00a0 As I walked down to the convention center on my last day in Orlando, suddenly, a title came into my head:\u00a0 <em>For Women Only:<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>What You Need to Know about the Inner Lives of Men.<\/em>\u00a0 I literally stopped dead in the middle of the hallway, as into my head sprang this entire idea for how to take what I had learned and do even more research and create a non-fiction book out of it to help women understand men.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, \u2018Wow!\u00a0 Lord, that\u2019s a really good idea!\u2019\u00a0 And that book, <em>For Women Only<\/em>, came out a year later and it exploded.\u00a0 It has sold over one million copies in fifteen different languages.\u00a0 Literally hundreds of thousands of marriages have been improved, healed, or saved because of this new understanding of men.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd none of it ever would have happened if I hadn\u2019t written the novel that lost us money and caused me so much discouragement.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you walk away from that first book saying, \u201cThis is where I belong?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 I kind of did.\u00a0 It felt like it fit suddenly.\u00a0 I felt like this was where I was supposed to use my gifts.\u00a0 And my husband was <em>huge<\/em> in being able to say, \u201cYes!\u00a0 This is the direction you need to go.\u201d\u00a0 For me to sort of feel like I had the permission to really pour into that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Every man knows what that feels like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yeah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He needs his wife\u2019s blessing and permission as he goes to work and goes out to. . . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, to pursue his dreams.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 . . . to slay dragons and to conquer the world.\u00a0 He ought to be able to figure that out and say, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I need to come alongside my wife and begin to help her assess what her gifts and abilities are.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor a mom who\u2019s in the romper room, with a bunch of rug rats running around \u2013 a bunch of kids who are toddlers \u2013 she needs all the help she can get at figuring out what she\u2019s good at.\u00a0 She\u2019s just in \u201csurvival\u201d mode for much of the day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 For <em>much<\/em> of the day!\u00a0 The <em>incredible<\/em> power that a husband has in that situation to release her into the thing that will light her up in these other areas of her life and be that Kingdom purpose beyond the home and into the world.\u00a0 Even, for example, if it\u2019s just saying, \u201cYou know I just really want to do this women\u2019s group.\u00a0 It\u2019s a way I can pour into the lives of these other women.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd she comes back, like coming back from her art sessions, refreshed and energized and ready to take on the world.\u00a0 But if her husband says, \u201cOh, I don\u2019t know,\u201d then she\u2019ll probably in some ways back off from that.\u00a0 That would be a loss, because that\u2019s the way God has designed her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If she doesn\u2019t know what her gifts and passions are, or looks at them and says, \u201cOK, I heard you talking about making brownies, but come on! We\u2019ve got Shaunti Feldhahn writing books and me making brownies.\u00a0 It just doesn\u2019t seem like we\u2019re talking about the same thing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, but it does!\u00a0 I mean, there is a way you can use that.\u00a0 Remember, what we\u2019re talking about is not just the \u201cbaking brownies,\u201d but about how does that speak to something that lights you up, that you would love to do, and that is a Kingdom purpose of that gift.\u00a0 <em>That<\/em> is one of the main things we\u2019re talking about in this book and in this Bible study.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I want to go back to the verse that you quoted earlier.\u00a0 Ephesians 2:10 \u2013 it\u2019s one of my favorite verses in all of the Bible.\u00a0 \u201cFor we are God\u2019s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.\u201d\u00a0 And in my Bible, Shaunti, you can see. . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh my!\u00a0 Lots of underlining.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a line drawn from the word \u201cworkmanship,\u201d and it has underneath it an explanation:\u00a0 \u201cWe are God\u2019s work of art.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA woman is God\u2019s work of art.\u00a0 He has a divine design for her life.\u00a0 Yes, He wants to use her in relationships if she\u2019s a single woman, with those she comes to know and have a friendship with.\u00a0 He wants to use her with her husband if she\u2019s married, and with her children, but He also wants to use her beyond the home to the neighborhood, the community, the world.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTherein lies the challenge:\u00a0 for a woman to begin to figure out, \u201cWhat\u2019s my assignment?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Around what Jesus called the Great Commission \u2013 to go to the world (Matthew 28) and share the gospel and make disciples.\u00a0 Frankly, I think what you\u2019re giving women here in LifeReady Woman is an 8-session video series that\u2019s going to put a tool in the hands of a bunch of women who are God\u2019s workmanship to do just this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey delight in women\u2019s groups; they love to put them together and to host them.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to make it fun, they\u2019re going to make it pretty and exciting and warm and inviting.\u00a0 They may even be able to use this to reach out to people who aren\u2019t in church, who haven\u2019t darkened the door of a church in years, maybe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the process of discovering what it means to be a woman, they may discover that Jesus Christ is their Savior and Lord.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So I think this is an exciting opportunity that we\u2019re giving women today.\u00a0 Shaunti, I just want to thank you for being a woman who is running the race well . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Trying!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> . . . and being a woman who is created in Christ Jesus for good works.\u00a0 I am proud of you and proud of your work here with LifeReady Woman.\u00a0 I pray God\u2019s favor upon it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThanks for joining us!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And there is more information available online at FamilyLifeToday.com about the <em>LifeReady Woman<\/em> video series.\u00a0 You can go to FamilyLifeToday.com and watch a video clip or order the DVDs.\u00a0 Or if it\u2019s easier, call us toll-free at 1-800-FLTODAY.\u00a0 1-800-358-6329. got an assignment there, you know?\u00a0 I\u2019m to be a good steward of my wife\u2019s life.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t mean that I own her.\u00a0 It\u2019s not that she\u2019s my possession.\u00a0 But as her husband, God\u2019s given me the responsibility to make sure she is not wasted.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what nurture and cherish is supposed to look like, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is, and we\u2019ve been helped all this week by a wise woman.\u00a0 Shaunti Feldhahn joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Shaunti, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Good to be with you, as always.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Shaunti is the featured speaker on a brand new 8-session video series called \u201cLifeReady Woman.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s also the name of a book, <em>LifeReady Woman<\/em>, as well, and you\u2019re all about equipping women in small group Bible studies with this video series around their major calling in life.\u00a0 The major assignments God has for her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s basically a biblical prescription for life balance, and a big part of that is how are you, personally, as a woman, designed?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And part of that design is that a woman step out in faith and make sure she is using her gifts and abilities wisely.\u00a0 Interestingly, you\u2019ve created this Bible study for women to be led by women.\u00a0 You\u2019re talking about tapping into some women who have the ability to organize and form small groups and use this video and host it in their church or their community.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 There\u2019s basically a grid that we\u2019ve been talking about all week, of sort of, \u201cWhat is the biblical design and calling that we can live our life by, and make these choices as we\u2019re juggling all these things in life?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, one of them we talked about was being designed to leave and cleave, and be fruitful and multiply \u2013 the job description that God gave Adam and Eve.\u00a0 But the third one is this idea of subdue and rule.\u00a0 Subdue the earth and rule over it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt basically means:\u00a0 Advance God\u2019s Kingdom.\u00a0 Do it in ways that are specific to your gifting.\u00a0 And do it beyond the home.\u00a0 This is not <em>in <\/em>the home. It is beyond the home, and into the world.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor some women, it may mean that one of the things that is their gifting is they love organizing.\u00a0 These are the women who end up facilitating the Bible studies in the churches when they do this stuff, because that\u2019s an example of what lights them up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the kind of stuff that makes them go, \u201cOh, wow.\u00a0 I never thought of that.\u201d\u00a0 But that is a \u201csubdue and rule\u201d calling.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Does a woman subdue and rule differently than a man does?\u00a0 Or is this one of those areas where it\u2019s just basically, \u201cWhat\u2019s your gift?,\u201d and you do it according to your gifting?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, gosh, I think probably both.\u00a0 I think that we in the Christian community sometimes don\u2019t really encourage women to use their gifts in this way.\u00a0 We kind of, as women (and I don\u2019t think people necessarily say it overtly), think, \u201cWait a minute.\u00a0 Aren\u2019t I supposed to, while my kids are small, just be a stay-at-home mom and not do any of this other stuff?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reality is that God has told us that these are the three things we are designed for.\u00a0 If we <em>don\u2019t <\/em>do them, life won\u2019t work.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As you\u2019ve been talking, I\u2019ve been smiling because I couldn\u2019t help but think about, over the past 34 years, how many of our Weekend to Remember\u00ae marriage getaways have been hosted by couples who brought our conference to their community.\u00a0 I say \u201ccouples,\u201d but actually if you looked at who really does the work. . . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me take a guess!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, it\u2019s the women who have gotten the brochures to the bookstores and to the churches.\u00a0 They\u2019ve made the phone calls and networked with other people.\u00a0 There are some real heroes across the country:\u00a0 couples who cared about the marriages and families in their community.\u00a0 But the real driving force \u2013 I mean the one who carried the mail, literally - was the woman, who was making those calls and really putting in hundreds, or maybe even thousands, of hours on behalf of marriages and families.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that is such a great example, Dennis, because I can guarantee you that a lot of those women would call themselves \u201cstay-at-home moms.\u201d\u00a0 The reality is that for any woman, regardless of whether they work or don\u2019t work, God has given you some individual skills, individual abilities, for a purpose.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is this <em>great <\/em>passage that applies to men and women.\u00a0 It\u2019s in Ephesians -\u00a0 Ephesians 2:10 (and I love this comment).\u00a0 He says, \u201cWe are God\u2019s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which He prepared in advance for us to do.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have this picture of a Creator sitting down and sort of piecing you together <em>just<\/em> perfectly, because He had in mind all this stuff He wants you to do with this specific set of giftings.\u00a0 If you, as a woman, don\u2019t do those things, then you\u2019re going to feel incomplete.\u00a0 You\u2019re going to feel like you\u2019re not functioning in the way you were designed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo don\u2019t <em>ever <\/em>let anybody tell you \u201cYou\u2019re not allowed to do that stuff.\u201d\u00a0 Because that\u2019s what God has gifted you for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If a wife says to you, \u201cYou know, in this season of life where I\u2019ve got young kids and I\u2019m a mom, I am perfectly contented to make those two priorities my sole responsibilities.\u00a0 I\u2019ll save that engagement outside for a later season, but right now I\u2019m happy to just focus on these two areas\u201d. . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Like husband and kids?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Do you say, \u201cOK, that\u2019s fine\u201d?\u00a0 Or do you say, \u201cNo, you need to have something going on out in the kingdom\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, here\u2019s the way that it looks like God has designed us (from the Scriptures).\u00a0 First of all, there are seasons of life, OK?\u00a0 You are going to fulfill what we call the three \u201ccore callings\u201d:\u00a0 the \u201cleave and cleave,\u201d \u201cbe fruitful and multiply,\u201d and \u201csubdue and rule.\u201d\u00a0 You\u2019re going to fulfill them differently depending on your season of life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have two small children.\u00a0 There are just things that I can\u2019t do.\u00a0 But, you know what?\u00a0 The thing for us as women to realize is that it\u2019s all about this biblical prescription.\u00a0 What will make us thrive?\u00a0 What will give us peace?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know what?\u00a0 Sometimes, there are things that God has called us to do that would light us up and that would actually, if we did them to advance the Kingdom, make us more relaxed rather than more stressed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes, if something\u2019s going to make you more stressed, there\u2019s a problem.\u00a0 Don\u2019t do that.\u00a0 But there are some things that you may be <em>doing <\/em>more in some ways, but it doesn\u2019t <em>feel<\/em> like it, because it\u2019s how you\u2019re designed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me give you an example.\u00a0 When we were doing the test Bible study for the <em>LifeReady Woman<\/em> group, it was at a church in suburban Atlanta and we did the, you know, evening version of the study.\u00a0 There was a woman who came in each time \u2013 and we didn\u2019t ask her to do this \u2013 but she just showed up each time to supplement the coffee that the church provided.\u00a0 She kept showing up with a pan of shortbread, or brownies one day, and cookies the next time.\u00a0 Nobody asked her.\u00a0 She just did it!\u00a0 She loved it, and she got all these great comments.\u00a0 She just smiled.\u00a0 It kind of lit her up!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe was this very, very busy stay-at-home mom.\u00a0 She had all these kids.\u00a0 But this was something that relaxed her.\u00a0 It was something that she loved to do.\u00a0 We realized that it was an example of a gift of hospitality that God has given her.\u00a0 There are some people who would say, \u201cOhhh, it\u2019s my night for the brownies.\u201d\u00a0 And that\u2019s an example of something that is <em>not<\/em> your gift.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 But she was functioning <em>in<\/em> her gift.\u00a0 It naturally came out of her.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t feel like a burden.\u00a0 It was a way for her to bless all of these other women in this group.\u00a0 To her, it seemed so little, and she was shocked when she realized, \u201cOh my gosh, that\u2019s an example of a gifting I can use.\u00a0 Not just to bring brownies to a Bible study group, but to invite somebody over after church on Sunday when they\u2019re new.\u00a0 I could have a little newcomers\u2019 thing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAgain, some people would say, \u201cOh, that sounds awful,\u201d because it\u2019s not their gift.\u00a0 But for her, it lit her up.\u00a0 It was something that felt like she was flowing in that.\u00a0 That\u2019s an example of what I\u2019m talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As I\u2019m listening to you, I\u2019m thinking it\u2019s not only a matter of gifts.\u00a0 That\u2019s certainly an important part of it, but it\u2019s also a matter of the hard-wired passion that God has put in the heart of a woman.\u00a0 For instance, Barbara, since we became empty-nesters a few years ago, has dusted off her art easel and has begun painting again.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tInitially, it started with watercolors and now she\u2019s off into oils.\u00a0 A couple of weeks ago, I gave her the gift of getting away with a famous artist for five days along with a group of other people.\u00a0 They all painted landscapes, they painted a church house, they painted a stream.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to tell you that when she came back, she was energized.\u00a0 She was refreshed.\u00a0 She had gone off and done something that, (A) she was gifted to do but also (B) something she was passionate about.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBarbara is passionate about beauty.\u00a0 In fact, I\u2019ve made the statement about her, \u201cWherever she goes, she makes things beautiful.\u201d\u00a0 She not only has personal beauty, but she\u2019s constantly bringing order - which means I can\u2019t leave the shoes in the living room. . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sorry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 . . . after I\u2019ve read the paper.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the point is that, as a woman, I think it\u2019s important to take a step back and do an inventory of what your gifts are; but also take a step back and ask, \u201cWhat are you really passionate about?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s a great way of putting it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then to ask the question, once I know gifts and passions, \u201cHow can I use those to advance the Kingdom?\u201d\u00a0 Because ultimately, that\u2019s where you\u2019re trying to point women \u2013 to Kingdom activity and to Kingdom involvement, not just, \u201cGee, I like this, so I\u2019ll do it.\u201d But, \u201cI want to put this to work so that I\u2019m investing in what God\u2019s called me to.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and right there is why we created this study.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t just an academic exercise.\u00a0 It was because we as women are balancing and juggling <em>so much<\/em>.\u00a0 It\u2019s like, \u201cHow do I balance my life?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, you know what?\u00a0 God has given us this prescription, the Bible.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how you do it!\u00a0 It\u2019s going to look different for every woman.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to look different at different seasons of life.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to just look different.\u00a0 But it\u2019s going to apply to everybody.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019re a young woman right out of college trying to figure out what to do with your life, or if you\u2019re the single mom or you\u2019re the career executive, or you\u2019re the empty-nester, or whatever.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to look different.\u00a0 The reality is that every woman is juggling, and this gives them a way to juggle.\u00a0 A way to make the choices that just fit with your life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alright, speak to Bob.\u00a0 Mary Ann\u2019s about to become an empty-nester.\u00a0 And he\u2019s about to realize that he\u2019s really going to have to re-steward Mary Ann in some fresh ways.\u00a0 Now I know you\u2019re not an expert in it. . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 She\u2019s talking to women!\u00a0 Will you leave me out of this one?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are men who listen every day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are a lot of men who are listening.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTalk to a man about how he can better help his wife and be that steward, Shaunti.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know, one of the things that\u2019s really, really important is that every woman feels in a way, no matter how liberated and strong she is, like she needs her husband\u2019s permission and blessing to do the stuff that she really wants to do and feels called to do.\u00a0 It\u2019s one of the reasons why, in the study, we focus a lot on the idea of melding with your husband and leaving and cleaving and what that looks like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause if a woman isn\u2019t supported in that way, nothing else is going to work.\u00a0 I will tell you, as a woman, when you\u2019re at odds with your husband over something, it\u2019s like nothing is right with the world until that is resolved.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, you may not realize it, but you guys have an immense amount of power to really encourage and make your women feel like they can fly, or make them feel like, \u201cIs this OK?\u201d.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLike I said, it may not seem like the liberated modern thing, but it\u2019s in the heart of every woman.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just wondering.\u00a0 It appears obvious that writing and speaking would be right in the center of your passion\/gift mix, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, you could probably say that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what energizes you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s what energizes me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s the stewarding of your gifts.\u00a0 Did you recognize that from the start?\u00a0 When you graduated from Harvard, did you say, \u201cI know exactly where I\u2019m supposed to be deploying my giftedness?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know it\u2019s so funny.\u00a0 I was an analyst on Wall Street.\u00a0 And where it started was nurturing this gifting of analysis <em>first<\/em>.\u00a0 And then God gave me the opportunity to step out into writing.\u00a0 Suddenly, it was that, \u201cOh, wow\u201d feeling.\u00a0 I was now analyzing relationships and people.\u00a0 It was a new \u201cAha!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat process led me into this space that I feel like I\u2019m built for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 About ten years ago, God gave me this miraculous entr\u00e9e into the publishing world.\u00a0 I really felt like I had a gift for writing and speaking.\u00a0 It was a field I could work around my children and still bring in income to pay off student loans, which was really necessary.\u00a0 After \u201c9-11,\u201d Jeff\u2019s company had gone out of business owing us ten months of salary.\u00a0 We were going through a terrible time financially.\u00a0 I felt so strongly that God was asking me to write a particular novel, on a particular subject.\u00a0 I was convinced that God would make this novel a best-seller, and \u2018Ta-da!\u00a0 We\u2019d be saved!\u2019\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI poured myself into this novel for a year and it hit the shelves and sold very few copies.\u00a0 After a year of work, it actually <em>lost <\/em>us money.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t understand it.\u00a0 Jeff and I were hitting the pavement looking for work.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t know how we were going to pay our mortgage.\u00a0 We had two toddlers, and I was so upset.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u2018God, why did you have me spend that whole year writing that novel?\u00a0 I did so much research and no one will ever see it.\u00a0 It did no good!\u2019\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA few months later, I was at the Christian book convention in Orlando, paying my own way to get there, still trying to convince someone - anyone - to do a radio interview or a mention in the newspaper.\u00a0 Anything to promote the book!\u00a0 And there was no interest.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt looked like all that work, all that research, all that use of my gifts that I thought God had told me to do, was wasted.\u00a0 But I was looking at it as if today\u2019s circumstances are all that matters.\u00a0 And God has so much of the bigger picture!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou see, in that novel, one of my main characters was a man.\u00a0 I had spent a year interviewing men to learn what thoughts to put into my character\u2019s head.\u00a0 I was so surprised by what I was learning.\u00a0 As I walked down to the convention center on my last day in Orlando, suddenly, a title came into my head:\u00a0 <em>For Women Only:<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>What You Need to Know about the Inner Lives of Men.<\/em>\u00a0 I literally stopped dead in the middle of the hallway, as into my head sprang this entire idea for how to take what I had learned and do even more research and create a non-fiction book out of it to help women understand men.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, \u2018Wow!\u00a0 Lord, that\u2019s a really good idea!\u2019\u00a0 And that book, <em>For Women Only<\/em>, came out a year later and it exploded.\u00a0 It has sold over one million copies in fifteen different languages.\u00a0 Literally hundreds of thousands of marriages have been improved, healed, or saved because of this new understanding of men.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd none of it ever would have happened if I hadn\u2019t written the novel that lost us money and caused me so much discouragement.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you walk away from that first book saying, \u201cThis is where I belong?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 I kind of did.\u00a0 It felt like it fit suddenly.\u00a0 I felt like this was where I was supposed to use my gifts.\u00a0 And my husband was <em>huge<\/em> in being able to say, \u201cYes!\u00a0 This is the direction you need to go.\u201d\u00a0 For me to sort of feel like I had the permission to really pour into that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Every man knows what that feels like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yeah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He needs his wife\u2019s blessing and permission as he goes to work and goes out to. . . \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, to pursue his dreams.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 . . . to slay dragons and to conquer the world.\u00a0 He ought to be able to figure that out and say, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 I need to come alongside my wife and begin to help her assess what her gifts and abilities are.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor a mom who\u2019s in the romper room, with a bunch of rug rats running around \u2013 a bunch of kids who are toddlers \u2013 she needs all the help she can get at figuring out what she\u2019s good at.\u00a0 She\u2019s just in \u201csurvival\u201d mode for much of the day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 For <em>much<\/em> of the day!\u00a0 The <em>incredible<\/em> power that a husband has in that situation to release her into the thing that will light her up in these other areas of her life and be that Kingdom purpose beyond the home and into the world.\u00a0 Even, for example, if it\u2019s just saying, \u201cYou know I just really want to do this women\u2019s group.\u00a0 It\u2019s a way I can pour into the lives of these other women.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd she comes back, like coming back from her art sessions, refreshed and energized and ready to take on the world.\u00a0 But if her husband says, \u201cOh, I don\u2019t know,\u201d then she\u2019ll probably in some ways back off from that.\u00a0 That would be a loss, because that\u2019s the way God has designed her.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If she doesn\u2019t know what her gifts and passions are, or looks at them and says, \u201cOK, I heard you talking about making brownies, but come on! We\u2019ve got Shaunti Feldhahn writing books and me making brownies.\u00a0 It just doesn\u2019t seem like we\u2019re talking about the same thing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, but it does!\u00a0 I mean, there is a way you can use that.\u00a0 Remember, what we\u2019re talking about is not just the \u201cbaking brownies,\u201d but about how does that speak to something that lights you up, that you would love to do, and that is a Kingdom purpose of that gift.\u00a0 <em>That<\/em> is one of the main things we\u2019re talking about in this book and in this Bible study.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, I want to go back to the verse that you quoted earlier.\u00a0 Ephesians 2:10 \u2013 it\u2019s one of my favorite verses in all of the Bible.\u00a0 \u201cFor we are God\u2019s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.\u201d\u00a0 And in my Bible, Shaunti, you can see. . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh my!\u00a0 Lots of underlining.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a line drawn from the word \u201cworkmanship,\u201d and it has underneath it an explanation:\u00a0 \u201cWe are God\u2019s work of art.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA woman is God\u2019s work of art.\u00a0 He has a divine design for her life.\u00a0 Yes, He wants to use her in relationships if she\u2019s a single woman, with those she comes to know and have a friendship with.\u00a0 He wants to use her with her husband if she\u2019s married, and with her children, but He also wants to use her beyond the home to the neighborhood, the community, the world.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTherein lies the challenge:\u00a0 for a woman to begin to figure out, \u201cWhat\u2019s my assignment?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Around what Jesus called the Great Commission \u2013 to go to the world (Matthew 28) and share the gospel and make disciples.\u00a0 Frankly, I think what you\u2019re giving women here in LifeReady Woman is an 8-session video series that\u2019s going to put a tool in the hands of a bunch of women who are God\u2019s workmanship to do just this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey delight in women\u2019s groups; they love to put them together and to host them.\u00a0 They\u2019re going to make it fun, they\u2019re going to make it pretty and exciting and warm and inviting.\u00a0 They may even be able to use this to reach out to people who aren\u2019t in church, who haven\u2019t darkened the door of a church in years, maybe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the process of discovering what it means to be a woman, they may discover that Jesus Christ is their Savior and Lord.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So I think this is an exciting opportunity that we\u2019re giving women today.\u00a0 Shaunti, I just want to thank you for being a woman who is running the race well . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Trying!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> . . . and being a woman who is created in Christ Jesus for good works.\u00a0 I am proud of you and proud of your work here with LifeReady Woman.\u00a0 I pray God\u2019s favor upon it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThanks for joining us!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thanks.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And there is more information available online at FamilyLifeToday.com about the <em>LifeReady Woman<\/em> video series.\u00a0 You can go to FamilyLifeToday.com and watch a video clip or order the DVDs.\u00a0 Or if it\u2019s easier, call us toll-free at 1-800-FLTODAY.\u00a0 1-800-358-6329.
