Fly!\u00a0 If you fall down, suck it up and get back up.\u201d\u00a0 And kids need both.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLifeToday<\/em> for Thursday, March 3<sup>rd<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 Today Shaunti Feldhahn joins us to talk about the priority of marriage and parenting in an already overcrowded woman\u2019s life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 You know, as we\u2019ve been spending time this week unpacking what God\u2019s design for womanhood is, because of the video series that Shaunti Feldhahn and Robert Lewis worked on called <em>LifeReady Woman.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and Shaunti joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>Shaunti, welcome back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve just been interested as I\u2019ve been listening to this; I wondered if we made it kind of feel like there\u2019s a recipe for fulfillment in the heart of a woman.\u00a0 If you\u2019ll just do all the things you\u2019re supposed to do \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 A plus B plus C \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and life will work out perfectly if I just do my part.\u00a0 I think we can have this formula mentality, not just about this but about raising kids or about \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or about life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, if I just make the right choices life will work out the way I want it to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I look back on my life and both Barbara and I have been talking recently about this \u2013 how we started out in our 20s, 30s, maybe even 40s with really a very idealistic view of life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMan, we\u2019ve been through some tough stuff.\u00a0 She\u2019s nearly died on three or four different occasions.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had struggles with a child or two over our years of parenting.\u00a0 I mean, it was not smooth sailing.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s one of the reasons why the Bible paints people the way it does; it paints them warts and all.\u00a0 I mean, you see their lies, their deceit.\u00a0 Judas, for instance, who was right next to Christ, denied him for thirty pieces of silver.\u00a0 I mean, life doesn\u2019t necessarily work out the way we imagined.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And Shaunti, one of the things that you\u2019re trying to say to women as you take them through the <em>LifeReady Woman<\/em> material, the video series, is there\u2019s a way you are meant to live, but that doesn\u2019t mean that the road you\u2019re going to be on is going to be a smooth road.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, you used the illustration earlier about your van and how you took it through a flood and it wasn\u2019t made to do that, and you killed the van.\u00a0 Well it may be that you\u2019re going to wind up on a rough road and there are a lot of bumps along the road, but you still have to be true to what you were made to do.\u00a0 Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s basically a matter of looking at our design and our callings and seeing, okay, you know what, if I work in the way that I\u2019m meant to, this is the best possible way for me to live life.\u00a0 But that doesn\u2019t mean that life doesn\u2019t come at you and impact you.\u00a0 And it doesn\u2019t mean that suddenly \u2013 like you said, it\u2019s not a formula.\u00a0 It\u2019s not like a cake mix; you know you put so many pieces of flour and this much sugar and you bake a cake and it all turns out perfectly, because there is stuff that gets in the way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe deal with this a lot in the study, actually, and we talk about basically God\u2019s ideal versus my real.\u00a0 One of my closest friends\u2014I know she\u2019s made mistakes, but she\u2019s really done it as right as I could ever say a woman could do it.\u00a0 She\u2019s been a great wife.\u00a0 She\u2019s been a great mom, homeschooling five kids, adopted two of the kids out of foster care.\u00a0 She\u2019s done so much of it right, and she\u2019s beautiful.\u00a0 She takes care of herself and she\u2019s respectful to her husband.\u00a0 She does all the stuff, but you know what?\u00a0 Last year her husband abandoned her, and walked out on her to go live with another woman.\u00a0 For him, he just completely collapsed, and it became a trust issue for her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLife has handed me this; what do I do?\u00a0 It may be, like the single woman who says \u2013 you know, we had a woman in our <em>LifeReady<\/em> group, because I was trying to get every conceivable demographic, and one of them was a woman who is almost forty, she\u2019s single, she would love to be married.\u00a0 I know her well enough to know she\u2019s made incredibly wise choices, and it\u2019s not because somehow she\u2019s done something wrong, or whatever.\u00a0 No, this is just what\u2019s happened in her life because of various circumstances, and she would love to be married but she\u2019s not.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo it\u2019s like, okay, here we are, here\u2019s the situation, but you know what?\u00a0 I am designed this way.\u00a0 I am called this way.\u00a0 With what life has handed me I can still choose to live in obedience.\u00a0 And it may not look like I really wanted it to look, but it\u2019s still going to end up being God can make this the best that it is for me right now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you know what, the other thing for all of us as women to talk about, and we deal with this a lot in the study as well, is to realize we have so much of an earthly perspective.\u00a0 We have so much of a perspective like this world is sort of the end point.\u00a0 Finally we die, we go to heaven and that\u2019s sort of the end point, and it\u2019s not it at all.\u00a0 And that in fact, really it\u2019s just talking about that\u2019s just the beginning and how we live in obedience in this life \u2013 it\u2019s going to determine so much of what it looks like for us in heaven.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just don\u2019t talk about that as Christians.\u00a0 Jesus talks about that very clearly.\u00a0 Like in the parable of the talents, we think it\u2019s saying if you live well, then more will be given to you here on earth.\u00a0 But in the context, it\u2019s all about the end times and it\u2019s all about when you get to heaven and the master has come back to you and said, \u201cWell done, good and faithful servant.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to give you more,\u201d and that more is in heaven.\u00a0 So we have this earthly perspective and it\u2019s so easy to do, but it\u2019s so critical for us to start to get an eternal perspective instead.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we\u2019re trying to switch people\u2019s mindsets to saying, \u201cHow can I live here in obedience according to how I\u2019m designed?\u201d\u00a0 In most cases it is going to lead to a better life here on earth, and certainly will lead to that good and faithful servant in heaven.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Shaunti, I agree, and one of the things I really like about this new eight-session video series for women called <em>LifeReady Woman<\/em> is that you\u2019ve really mapped out how both men and women are called to leave and cleave; in other words, establish the marriage relationship, but how also we are to be fruitful and multiply.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve broken that down; talking about what a woman\u2019s assignment is there, what her unique, feminine calling is there.\u00a0 Explain that to our listeners.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, there really is a unique way that women are designed to nurture life that is different from the way that men are designed to nurture life.\u00a0 And this is something I fought against for years, because we as women -- we don\u2019t have any more special thing than men do, and why do they keep putting us as women into that bucket?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes you do.\u00a0 Any man who has ever stayed at home with the kids for a weekend knows that you\u2019re more gifted in this area.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But you know what \u2013 there are women listening who are saying \u201cI go crazy staying home with the kids for a weekend, too, so I don\u2019t feel like I\u2019ve got any of that nurturing thing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes. I would be one of them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, honestly, for example \u2013 and this is just to put it in a framework, is that my husband is actually much more naturally, to me, he looks much more naturally gifted and comfortable at hanging out with the kids and playing games.\u00a0 He\u2019s a big kid.\u00a0 I\u2019m like, well if we can put them in the car and go do something \u2013 I\u2019m good at that.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t feel that natural, sort of maternal giftedness that some women do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was always this very confusing thing of why is it that we\u2019re supposed to be nurturers, right?\u00a0 Well, I look at the biology of my brain as a woman; I\u2019m actually wired in some ways to do nurturing differently than my husband.\u00a0 Yes, he may have a personality that\u2019s more big kid, but you know what?\u00a0 I as a woman am designed to hear things that my husband doesn\u2019t notice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s no doubt about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m designed to be able to sense things and have this sort of empathy.\u00a0 As a woman, I see body language at a much earlier level than a man does.\u00a0 And I\u2019m making generalizations, but generally this is how the female brain is designed.\u00a0 Obviously, biologically we\u2019re designed to nurture life while we have children in our bodies as well.\u00a0 It\u2019s a bigger picture framework for us to realize it is part of our design as being fruitful and multiply that we will do it differently.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you think some women shy away from a responsibility to engage as a nurturer because they just sense that \u201cI\u2019m not like that woman over there \u2013\u201c\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 -- who just seems to be a natural with her kids, and they\u2019re hugging her, and she\u2019s cutting out paper dolls, and you go \u201cI am not that woman.\u201d<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, believe me, you\u2019re talking to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And so she says, \u201cIf I\u2019m not that woman, then I\u2019m not designed to be a nurturer.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, and see this is the reason why it was so critical to do the Bible study and to create this Bible study for all sorts of different kinds of women, and to be able to talk to every individual woman who has a different personality, different temperament as we were talking about earlier, different life circumstances that have come at her \u2013 and she\u2019s working all of those together, but it is because there is a way that God has specifically designed her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s an example for a woman as a female who does it differently than as a male would, anthropologists have found that in all cultures, all around the world, that on average a father of a toddler child will let that child get three times further away from him than the mom will.\u00a0 We as moms, we\u2019re designed to be more of that kind of following them around, and \u201cOh, I don\u2019t want Johnny to fall and hurt himself,\u201d and you know the dad is letting them get further away.\u00a0 \u201cGo! Fly!\u00a0 If you fall and hurt yourself, suck it up and get back up and do it over again.\u201d\u00a0 And kids need both.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the way God designed us, and to the degree that you can, and it\u2019s sometimes hard, to realize that this is something to embrace.\u00a0 This is something for us to say, \u201cOkay.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to look for these opportunities.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to see how God has designed me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are other things that I talk about in the study, you know, that we don\u2019t have time to get into here, but God, for example, has also given us as women a real specific kind of wisdom.\u00a0 The word is <em>sophron<\/em> in the Bible; this specific kind of female wisdom that God says we need to bring into the hearts of our children and that we need to bring into the hearts of our family in the world, too.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you see, for example, the Proverbs 31 woman that talks about the specific kind of wisdom and teaching that she has.\u00a0 And you know what?\u00a0 If we don\u2019t bring that to our kids, they\u2019ll be missing something.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo it\u2019s all part of looking and being purposeful.\u00a0 How are we designed?\u00a0 How are we called?\u00a0 How can I bring that to bear?\u00a0 And that is what is going to make life seem to fit.\u00a0 Although, as we talked about earlier, there are going to be cases where it doesn\u2019t look exactly like we want it to, but at least we\u2019ll be doing our part to the degree that we can.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you leaned away from nurturing early on, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, very much so.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even know if I wanted to have kids, frankly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So now that you have kids and you\u2019ve looked at what the Scriptures say and you\u2019ve seen this is an assignment for women, how is life different than it was?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you start to see \u2013To me, what I always rebelled against and, hate to say it \u2013 it was rebellion \u2013 I always rebelled against words like <em>assignment.<\/em>\u00a0 What do you mean, it\u2019s an assignment?\u00a0 What do you mean, I have a role?\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to have a role.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to be put into a box.\u00a0 You know, we as women, we don\u2019t want to be put into a box.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd instead, you start to see it once you walk in this, the way that you\u2019re called.\u00a0 It starts feeling so right, that it starts feeling like, \u201cWait a minute.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t a box.\u00a0 This is a gift.\u00a0 This is an opportunity.\u00a0 This is \u2013 suddenly I feel like it just works.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that\u2019s really why the <em>LifeReady Woman<\/em> \u2013 that\u2019s the title.\u00a0 It\u2019s about being ready for life and it\u2019s about feeling ready and clear in your direction and focused, rather than feeling that life is just happening to you and coming at you and you\u2019ve got all this stuff to juggle and you don\u2019t know how to do it all and you\u2019re tired and yada, yada, yada, ya.\u00a0 Instead you feel like you understand where you\u2019re going and what your purpose is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I heard you say a bit earlier is that the Scripture really kind of edited some of the things that you really enjoy doing.\u00a0 Like you\u2019d like to be out there and maybe not being the nurturing mother that God did design you to be.\u00a0 Help me if I\u2019m wrong here, but it would be really easy for your husband to be the stay-at-home dad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It would be very easy for us to have completely switched things around and for me to say, \u201cWell it doesn\u2019t come naturally so I\u2019m just not going to do it.\u00a0 And you know what, honey?\u00a0 It comes naturally for you so you go and do,\u201d as opposed to realizing, \u201cWait a minute!\u00a0 Both of us have responsibility here.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is what we talk about in the <em>LifeReady Woman<\/em>, is that God turned to both Adam and Eve and said, for example, \u201cBe fruitful and multiply.\u201d\u00a0 I am designed for that, and if I don\u2019t do it, I\u2019m going to end up like so many other women who have focused on my career \u2013 and men, for that matter \u2013 who have focused on my career and have focused on all this great stuff I\u2019m doing out there \u2013 and I get a few years down the road and my kids are grown and they\u2019re in college, and they go, I missed it.\u00a0 I missed all of those opportunities because I was so focused on going and doing out there, and that subdue and rule \u2013 you know that\u2019s another one of the core callings \u2013 but it does not stop the fact that I\u2019m also called to be fruitful and multiply.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to conform myself to that scriptural model to do those three things -- leave and cleave, be fruitful and multiply, and to subdue and rule \u2013 that God tells Adam and Eve.\u00a0 I have to conform myself to that rather than letting the world or my own desires conform me to the way that I would otherwise go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So give me a concrete example of how you would lean into nurturing at home when you might not have done it this way in the past.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, here\u2019s something that actually happened for me.\u00a0 I was so focused on the stuff I was doing in my ministry and the books that I was writing and the fun I was having being out and talking to women\u2019s groups.\u00a0 And I hate to say it \u2013 this is really hard to talk about, but I was perfectly content with leaving my very small children in daycare all day.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had just had my second child and I felt in my spirit there was something wrong with me when I really didn\u2019t mind leaving my infant son in childcare until 6:30 in the evening, and got irritated to have to pick him up.\u00a0 At my 36<sup>th<\/sup> birthday dinner with some girlfriends I broke down in tears.\u00a0 \u201cThis can\u2019t be right.\u201d\u00a0 I asked my friends to pray for me.\u00a0 I cried out to God, \u201cLord, is this wrong?\u00a0 If so, change my desires.\u201d\u00a0 And here\u2019s what I felt that I heard as an answer from God:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPick them up at three.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cNo, Lord, I mean make me want to be the mom you want me to be.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPick them up at three.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBut how will I get all my work done?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPick them up at three.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFinally I obeyed, and I picked them up at three o\u2019clock, which meant I was spending at least three hours more a day with my children.\u00a0 God changed my desires.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had always bought into the notion that some women are just not naturally maternal.\u00a0 And okay, maybe I wasn\u2019t maternal in the same way as a woman who had always wanted to be a stay-at-home mom, but part of the reason my feelings were off-base is that I was living from the outside in, and I was letting my skills and interests dictate how I was spending all my time.\u00a0 When I changed how I spent my time, my feelings and my interest followed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis principle is so well summed up by one moment in the movie <em>Fireproof<\/em>.\u00a0 One of the main characters looks at his friend, a man who is contemplating divorce because he doesn\u2019t \u2018feel the love\u2019 anymore, and he says, \u201cYou can\u2019t follow your heart, because your heart can be deceived.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to lead your heart.\u201d\u00a0 Leading your heart is essentially what inside-out living is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I kept waiting in the midst of that story, Shaunti, for you to say, \u201cAnd then Jeff said to me,\u201d or \u201cJeff confronted me,\u201d or \u201cJeff appealed to me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, oh yes.\u00a0 That happened multiple times, actually.\u00a0 There were several times when Jeff basically said, \u201cThe way you\u2019re spending your time, you\u2019re not with your kids when you\u2019re with your kids.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere were a few times in that process where I\u2019d pick them up at three and I\u2019d be on the telephone doing conference calls.\u00a0 He finally got in my face and said, \u201cYou\u2019re still not with them.\u00a0 You\u2019re still not really investing into them.\u201d\u00a0 So that was all part of my \u201cOkay, I have to do this.\u00a0 I have to function the way that I\u2019m designed.\u00a0 I have to not follow my feelings.\u00a0 I have to lead my feelings.\u201d\u00a0 And that\u2019s really when my feelings changed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I appreciate you sharing that story, because there are a lot of men listening right now who may need to say something \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 -- to their wives.\u00a0 What they need to hear is the hope that can come by a man being strong enough to keep stepping in, not nagging \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 -- not being critical, but appealing to embrace God\u2019s design of being a woman, a wife, and a mom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think also there are some men who probably need the encouragement to say, \u201cYou know what?\u201d to them as a dad, \u201cIt\u2019s okay that you feel that nurturing thing, too, and that you want to go play with your kids.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t make you somehow less of a man.\u00a0 That\u2019s the way you\u2019re designed, too.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s just that sometimes, unfortunately, the roles, the situations, can get so flipped because it\u2019s more natural for one of the other, and both people have that responsibility.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then think that it\u2019s okay that the guy\u2019s doing the women\u2019s part so therefore she doesn\u2019t have to.\u00a0 A guy shouldn\u2019t necessarily come to that conclusion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 The thing that\u2019s interesting is there are going to be households where the two of them together come to a conclusion that,\u00a0 you know what, right now she\u2019s making more money than I am, so he\u2019ll have the part-time job for a little while, and she\u2019s going to do this big deadline, this big thing that happens.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJeff and I do that; there are times when I\u2019m on the road because I have some opportunities that he wants me to do, and he\u2019ll say, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 It\u2019s okay.\u00a0 I\u2019ll get the kids for a couple days while you\u2019re doing some of these things off here,\u201d but we\u2019ve prayed about that, together.\u00a0 I know now that I\u2019m not operating out of rebellion, and I\u2019m not operating out of avoidance, and instead we are unified, and Jeff is taking the lead in saying \u201cI think that this is the right package for us as a family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you think your kids know that there\u2019s a difference in Mom?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, absolutely.\u00a0 Without a question.\u00a0 When I\u2019m gone they\u2019re all excited that they get Camp Dad, because he lets them stay up later than I would and all that other kind of stuff.\u00a0 But now, when I\u2019m home, we are so much tighter, and they come running to me and we have the best time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd my daughter \u2013 I got the best confirmation \u2013 I\u2019m going to cry here \u2013 but my daughter showed me a school project that she did yesterday, and it\u2019s a big poster that talks about her family.\u00a0 She\u2019s in fifth grade.\u00a0 It says, \u201cWho\u2019s my hero?\u201d\u00a0 and it said my name. Underneath that \u2013 it said, \u201cWhy is she your hero?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cBecause she goes and saves marriages and then she comes home and loves us.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, \u201cOh, my gosh.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think that that would have happened three or four years ago,\u201d but doing this <em>LifeReady <\/em>study has forced me to confront my own self and forced me to put myself back into a biblical balance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019d like to encourage a woman who is listening right now who is the leader I wondered if we made it kind of feel like there\u2019s a recipe for fulfillment in the heart of a woman.\u00a0 If you\u2019ll just do all the things you\u2019re supposed to do \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 A plus B plus C \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and life will work out perfectly if I just do my part.\u00a0 I think we can have this formula mentality, not just about this but about raising kids or about \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or about life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah, if I just make the right choices life will work out the way I want it to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I look back on my life and both Barbara and I have been talking recently about this \u2013 how we started out in our 20s, 30s, maybe even 40s with really a very idealistic view of life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMan, we\u2019ve been through some tough stuff.\u00a0 She\u2019s nearly died on three or four different occasions.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had struggles with a child or two over our years of parenting.\u00a0 I mean, it was not smooth sailing.\u00a0 I think it\u2019s one of the reasons why the Bible paints people the way it does; it paints them warts and all.\u00a0 I mean, you see their lies, their deceit.\u00a0 Judas, for instance, who was right next to Christ, denied him for thirty pieces of silver.\u00a0 I mean, life doesn\u2019t necessarily work out the way we imagined.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And Shaunti, one of the things that you\u2019re trying to say to women as you take them through the <em>LifeReady Woman<\/em> material, the video series, is there\u2019s a way you are meant to live, but that doesn\u2019t mean that the road you\u2019re going to be on is going to be a smooth road.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, you used the illustration earlier about your van and how you took it through a flood and it wasn\u2019t made to do that, and you killed the van.\u00a0 Well it may be that you\u2019re going to wind up on a rough road and there are a lot of bumps along the road, but you still have to be true to what you were made to do.\u00a0 Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s basically a matter of looking at our design and our callings and seeing, okay, you know what, if I work in the way that I\u2019m meant to, this is the best possible way for me to live life.\u00a0 But that doesn\u2019t mean that life doesn\u2019t come at you and impact you.\u00a0 And it doesn\u2019t mean that suddenly \u2013 like you said, it\u2019s not a formula.\u00a0 It\u2019s not like a cake mix; you know you put so many pieces of flour and this much sugar and you bake a cake and it all turns out perfectly, because there is stuff that gets in the way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe deal with this a lot in the study, actually, and we talk about basically God\u2019s ideal versus my real.\u00a0 One of my closest friends\u2014I know she\u2019s made mistakes, but she\u2019s really done it as right as I could ever say a woman could do it.\u00a0 She\u2019s been a great wife.\u00a0 She\u2019s been a great mom, homeschooling five kids, adopted two of the kids out of foster care.\u00a0 She\u2019s done so much of it right, and she\u2019s beautiful.\u00a0 She takes care of herself and she\u2019s respectful to her husband.\u00a0 She does all the stuff, but you know what?\u00a0 Last year her husband abandoned her, and walked out on her to go live with another woman.\u00a0 For him, he just completely collapsed, and it became a trust issue for her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLife has handed me this; what do I do?\u00a0 It may be, like the single woman who says \u2013 you know, we had a woman in our <em>LifeReady<\/em> group, because I was trying to get every conceivable demographic, and one of them was a woman who is almost forty, she\u2019s single, she would love to be married.\u00a0 I know her well enough to know she\u2019s made incredibly wise choices, and it\u2019s not because somehow she\u2019s done something wrong, or whatever.\u00a0 No, this is just what\u2019s happened in her life because of various circumstances, and she would love to be married but she\u2019s not.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo it\u2019s like, okay, here we are, here\u2019s the situation, but you know what?\u00a0 I am designed this way.\u00a0 I am called this way.\u00a0 With what life has handed me I can still choose to live in obedience.\u00a0 And it may not look like I really wanted it to look, but it\u2019s still going to end up being God can make this the best that it is for me right now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd you know what, the other thing for all of us as women to talk about, and we deal with this a lot in the study as well, is to realize we have so much of an earthly perspective.\u00a0 We have so much of a perspective like this world is sort of the end point.\u00a0 Finally we die, we go to heaven and that\u2019s sort of the end point, and it\u2019s not it at all.\u00a0 And that in fact, really it\u2019s just talking about that\u2019s just the beginning and how we live in obedience in this life \u2013 it\u2019s going to determine so much of what it looks like for us in heaven.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe just don\u2019t talk about that as Christians.\u00a0 Jesus talks about that very clearly.\u00a0 Like in the parable of the talents, we think it\u2019s saying if you live well, then more will be given to you here on earth.\u00a0 But in the context, it\u2019s all about the end times and it\u2019s all about when you get to heaven and the master has come back to you and said, \u201cWell done, good and faithful servant.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to give you more,\u201d and that more is in heaven.\u00a0 So we have this earthly perspective and it\u2019s so easy to do, but it\u2019s so critical for us to start to get an eternal perspective instead.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we\u2019re trying to switch people\u2019s mindsets to saying, \u201cHow can I live here in obedience according to how I\u2019m designed?\u201d\u00a0 In most cases it is going to lead to a better life here on earth, and certainly will lead to that good and faithful servant in heaven.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Shaunti, I agree, and one of the things I really like about this new eight-session video series for women called <em>LifeReady Woman<\/em> is that you\u2019ve really mapped out how both men and women are called to leave and cleave; in other words, establish the marriage relationship, but how also we are to be fruitful and multiply.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou\u2019ve broken that down; talking about what a woman\u2019s assignment is there, what her unique, feminine calling is there.\u00a0 Explain that to our listeners.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, there really is a unique way that women are designed to nurture life that is different from the way that men are designed to nurture life.\u00a0 And this is something I fought against for years, because we as women -- we don\u2019t have any more special thing than men do, and why do they keep putting us as women into that bucket?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes you do.\u00a0 Any man who has ever stayed at home with the kids for a weekend knows that you\u2019re more gifted in this area.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But you know what \u2013 there are women listening who are saying \u201cI go crazy staying home with the kids for a weekend, too, so I don\u2019t feel like I\u2019ve got any of that nurturing thing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes. I would be one of them. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, honestly, for example \u2013 and this is just to put it in a framework, is that my husband is actually much more naturally, to me, he looks much more naturally gifted and comfortable at hanging out with the kids and playing games.\u00a0 He\u2019s a big kid.\u00a0 I\u2019m like, well if we can put them in the car and go do something \u2013 I\u2019m good at that.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t feel that natural, sort of maternal giftedness that some women do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was always this very confusing thing of why is it that we\u2019re supposed to be nurturers, right?\u00a0 Well, I look at the biology of my brain as a woman; I\u2019m actually wired in some ways to do nurturing differently than my husband.\u00a0 Yes, he may have a personality that\u2019s more big kid, but you know what?\u00a0 I as a woman am designed to hear things that my husband doesn\u2019t notice.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There\u2019s no doubt about that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m designed to be able to sense things and have this sort of empathy.\u00a0 As a woman, I see body language at a much earlier level than a man does.\u00a0 And I\u2019m making generalizations, but generally this is how the female brain is designed.\u00a0 Obviously, biologically we\u2019re designed to nurture life while we have children in our bodies as well.\u00a0 It\u2019s a bigger picture framework for us to realize it is part of our design as being fruitful and multiply that we will do it differently.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you think some women shy away from a responsibility to engage as a nurturer because they just sense that \u201cI\u2019m not like that woman over there \u2013\u201c\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 -- who just seems to be a natural with her kids, and they\u2019re hugging her, and she\u2019s cutting out paper dolls, and you go \u201cI am not that woman.\u201d<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, believe me, you\u2019re talking to me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And so she says, \u201cIf I\u2019m not that woman, then I\u2019m not designed to be a nurturer.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, and see this is the reason why it was so critical to do the Bible study and to create this Bible study for all sorts of different kinds of women, and to be able to talk to every individual woman who has a different personality, different temperament as we were talking about earlier, different life circumstances that have come at her \u2013 and she\u2019s working all of those together, but it is because there is a way that God has specifically designed her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere\u2019s an example for a woman as a female who does it differently than as a male would, anthropologists have found that in all cultures, all around the world, that on average a father of a toddler child will let that child get three times further away from him than the mom will.\u00a0 We as moms, we\u2019re designed to be more of that kind of following them around, and \u201cOh, I don\u2019t want Johnny to fall and hurt himself,\u201d and you know the dad is letting them get further away.\u00a0 \u201cGo! Fly!\u00a0 If you fall and hurt yourself, suck it up and get back up and do it over again.\u201d\u00a0 And kids need both.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the way God designed us, and to the degree that you can, and it\u2019s sometimes hard, to realize that this is something to embrace.\u00a0 This is something for us to say, \u201cOkay.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to look for these opportunities.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to see how God has designed me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are other things that I talk about in the study, you know, that we don\u2019t have time to get into here, but God, for example, has also given us as women a real specific kind of wisdom.\u00a0 The word is <em>sophron<\/em> in the Bible; this specific kind of female wisdom that God says we need to bring into the hearts of our children and that we need to bring into the hearts of our family in the world, too.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you see, for example, the Proverbs 31 woman that talks about the specific kind of wisdom and teaching that she has.\u00a0 And you know what?\u00a0 If we don\u2019t bring that to our kids, they\u2019ll be missing something.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo it\u2019s all part of looking and being purposeful.\u00a0 How are we designed?\u00a0 How are we called?\u00a0 How can I bring that to bear?\u00a0 And that is what is going to make life seem to fit.\u00a0 Although, as we talked about earlier, there are going to be cases where it doesn\u2019t look exactly like we want it to, but at least we\u2019ll be doing our part to the degree that we can.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you leaned away from nurturing early on, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, very much so.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even know if I wanted to have kids, frankly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So now that you have kids and you\u2019ve looked at what the Scriptures say and you\u2019ve seen this is an assignment for women, how is life different than it was?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you start to see \u2013To me, what I always rebelled against and, hate to say it \u2013 it was rebellion \u2013 I always rebelled against words like <em>assignment.<\/em>\u00a0 What do you mean, it\u2019s an assignment?\u00a0 What do you mean, I have a role?\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to have a role.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to be put into a box.\u00a0 You know, we as women, we don\u2019t want to be put into a box.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd instead, you start to see it once you walk in this, the way that you\u2019re called.\u00a0 It starts feeling so right, that it starts feeling like, \u201cWait a minute.\u00a0 This isn\u2019t a box.\u00a0 This is a gift.\u00a0 This is an opportunity.\u00a0 This is \u2013 suddenly I feel like it just works.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd that\u2019s really why the <em>LifeReady Woman<\/em> \u2013 that\u2019s the title.\u00a0 It\u2019s about being ready for life and it\u2019s about feeling ready and clear in your direction and focused, rather than feeling that life is just happening to you and coming at you and you\u2019ve got all this stuff to juggle and you don\u2019t know how to do it all and you\u2019re tired and yada, yada, yada, ya.\u00a0 Instead you feel like you understand where you\u2019re going and what your purpose is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What I heard you say a bit earlier is that the Scripture really kind of edited some of the things that you really enjoy doing.\u00a0 Like you\u2019d like to be out there and maybe not being the nurturing mother that God did design you to be.\u00a0 Help me if I\u2019m wrong here, but it would be really easy for your husband to be the stay-at-home dad.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It would be very easy for us to have completely switched things around and for me to say, \u201cWell it doesn\u2019t come naturally so I\u2019m just not going to do it.\u00a0 And you know what, honey?\u00a0 It comes naturally for you so you go and do,\u201d as opposed to realizing, \u201cWait a minute!\u00a0 Both of us have responsibility here.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is what we talk about in the <em>LifeReady Woman<\/em>, is that God turned to both Adam and Eve and said, for example, \u201cBe fruitful and multiply.\u201d\u00a0 I am designed for that, and if I don\u2019t do it, I\u2019m going to end up like so many other women who have focused on my career \u2013 and men, for that matter \u2013 who have focused on my career and have focused on all this great stuff I\u2019m doing out there \u2013 and I get a few years down the road and my kids are grown and they\u2019re in college, and they go, I missed it.\u00a0 I missed all of those opportunities because I was so focused on going and doing out there, and that subdue and rule \u2013 you know that\u2019s another one of the core callings \u2013 but it does not stop the fact that I\u2019m also called to be fruitful and multiply.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have to conform myself to that scriptural model to do those three things -- leave and cleave, be fruitful and multiply, and to subdue and rule \u2013 that God tells Adam and Eve.\u00a0 I have to conform myself to that rather than letting the world or my own desires conform me to the way that I would otherwise go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So give me a concrete example of how you would lean into nurturing at home when you might not have done it this way in the past.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, here\u2019s something that actually happened for me.\u00a0 I was so focused on the stuff I was doing in my ministry and the books that I was writing and the fun I was having being out and talking to women\u2019s groups.\u00a0 And I hate to say it \u2013 this is really hard to talk about, but I was perfectly content with leaving my very small children in daycare all day.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had just had my second child and I felt in my spirit there was something wrong with me when I really didn\u2019t mind leaving my infant son in childcare until 6:30 in the evening, and got irritated to have to pick him up.\u00a0 At my 36<sup>th<\/sup> birthday dinner with some girlfriends I broke down in tears.\u00a0 \u201cThis can\u2019t be right.\u201d\u00a0 I asked my friends to pray for me.\u00a0 I cried out to God, \u201cLord, is this wrong?\u00a0 If so, change my desires.\u201d\u00a0 And here\u2019s what I felt that I heard as an answer from God:\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPick them up at three.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cNo, Lord, I mean make me want to be the mom you want me to be.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPick them up at three.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cBut how will I get all my work done?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cPick them up at three.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFinally I obeyed, and I picked them up at three o\u2019clock, which meant I was spending at least three hours more a day with my children.\u00a0 God changed my desires.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had always bought into the notion that some women are just not naturally maternal.\u00a0 And okay, maybe I wasn\u2019t maternal in the same way as a woman who had always wanted to be a stay-at-home mom, but part of the reason my feelings were off-base is that I was living from the outside in, and I was letting my skills and interests dictate how I was spending all my time.\u00a0 When I changed how I spent my time, my feelings and my interest followed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis principle is so well summed up by one moment in the movie <em>Fireproof<\/em>.\u00a0 One of the main characters looks at his friend, a man who is contemplating divorce because he doesn\u2019t \u2018feel the love\u2019 anymore, and he says, \u201cYou can\u2019t follow your heart, because your heart can be deceived.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got to lead your heart.\u201d\u00a0 Leading your heart is essentially what inside-out living is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I kept waiting in the midst of that story, Shaunti, for you to say, \u201cAnd then Jeff said to me,\u201d or \u201cJeff confronted me,\u201d or \u201cJeff appealed to me.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, oh yes.\u00a0 That happened multiple times, actually.\u00a0 There were several times when Jeff basically said, \u201cThe way you\u2019re spending your time, you\u2019re not with your kids when you\u2019re with your kids.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere were a few times in that process where I\u2019d pick them up at three and I\u2019d be on the telephone doing conference calls.\u00a0 He finally got in my face and said, \u201cYou\u2019re still not with them.\u00a0 You\u2019re still not really investing into them.\u201d\u00a0 So that was all part of my \u201cOkay, I have to do this.\u00a0 I have to function the way that I\u2019m designed.\u00a0 I have to not follow my feelings.\u00a0 I have to lead my feelings.\u201d\u00a0 And that\u2019s really when my feelings changed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I appreciate you sharing that story, because there are a lot of men listening right now who may need to say something \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 -- to their wives.\u00a0 What they need to hear is the hope that can come by a man being strong enough to keep stepping in, not nagging \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 -- not being critical, but appealing to embrace God\u2019s design of being a woman, a wife, and a mom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think also there are some men who probably need the encouragement to say, \u201cYou know what?\u201d to them as a dad, \u201cIt\u2019s okay that you feel that nurturing thing, too, and that you want to go play with your kids.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t make you somehow less of a man.\u00a0 That\u2019s the way you\u2019re designed, too.\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s just that sometimes, unfortunately, the roles, the situations, can get so flipped because it\u2019s more natural for one of the other, and both people have that responsibility.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then think that it\u2019s okay that the guy\u2019s doing the women\u2019s part so therefore she doesn\u2019t have to.\u00a0 A guy shouldn\u2019t necessarily come to that conclusion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 The thing that\u2019s interesting is there are going to be households where the two of them together come to a conclusion that,\u00a0 you know what, right now she\u2019s making more money than I am, so he\u2019ll have the part-time job for a little while, and she\u2019s going to do this big deadline, this big thing that happens.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJeff and I do that; there are times when I\u2019m on the road because I have some opportunities that he wants me to do, and he\u2019ll say, \u201cYou know what?\u00a0 It\u2019s okay.\u00a0 I\u2019ll get the kids for a couple days while you\u2019re doing some of these things off here,\u201d but we\u2019ve prayed about that, together.\u00a0 I know now that I\u2019m not operating out of rebellion, and I\u2019m not operating out of avoidance, and instead we are unified, and Jeff is taking the lead in saying \u201cI think that this is the right package for us as a family.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you think your kids know that there\u2019s a difference in Mom?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Shaunti:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, absolutely.\u00a0 Without a question.\u00a0 When I\u2019m gone they\u2019re all excited that they get Camp Dad, because he lets them stay up later than I would and all that other kind of stuff.\u00a0 But now, when I\u2019m home, we are so much tighter, and they come running to me and we have the best time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd my daughter \u2013 I got the best confirmation \u2013 I\u2019m going to cry here \u2013 but my daughter showed me a school project that she did yesterday, and it\u2019s a big poster that talks about her family.\u00a0 She\u2019s in fifth grade.\u00a0 It says, \u201cWho\u2019s my hero?\u201d\u00a0 and it said my name.
