and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We can rebel against God-ordained gender differences; or we can call them, \u201cGood.\u201d\u00a0 We will talk about that today.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 I just keep coming back to the Troggs because we have been talking this week about...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I knew you would get back to the music thing of the 60\u2019s.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019m thinking\u2014we have been talking about girls gone wise.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cI wonder if we could re-cut it:\u00a0 Wiiise thing\u2014[Dennis joins in] you make my heart sing.\u201d\u00a0 I am just wondering if there is a market for that.\u00a0 Do you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Not for you and me singing it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tlaughter]\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe you, but not for both of us!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMary Kassian joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em>Mary, welcome back.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Thanks.\u00a0 It is good to be with you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She has written a book called <em>Girls Gone Wise<\/em> <em>in a World Gone Wild<\/em>.\u00a0 I want to ask you this question, and I have a disclaimer as I ask this question because I think men get the blame for almost everything that goes wrong.\u00a0 Let\u2019s face it\u2014we are responsible for a lot of it.\u00a0 Okay, I own that.\u00a0 But here is the question I want to ask you because you talk about, as Bob said, \u201cGirls gone wild.\u201d\u00a0 How much of that is to blame on men who have gone mild?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think the two go hand in hand.\u00a0 \u201cWhen men go mild, girls go wild; and when girls go wild, men go mild.\u201d\u00a0 It is a two-sided thing.\u00a0 One contributes to the other.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you have men who are not living in a godly fashion\u2014they are not being men of the Word, and not loving in the way they ought to love, and not living in the way they ought to live, then women tend to say, \u201cYou know what, I am going to take things into my own hands.\u00a0 I am going to try and control him and make things go the way that I want them to go.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYoung girls nowadays see nothing wrong\u2014they have been taught that there is nothing wrong in the girl asking the guys out for dates, and the girls initiating the relationship, and the girls taking the lead in the relationship.\u00a0 You see this happening in relationships.\u00a0 I see this tendency in the young girls nowadays.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe trouble is\u2014I also see them five, ten years down the road when they are sitting there crying because they have gotten married to these guys and, \u201cOh, my husband is passive.\u00a0 He won\u2019t take any leadership.\u00a0 He just sits on the couch.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t take initiative in our family and in our home.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI look at them and, \u201cWhat did you expect?\u00a0 You are the one who pursued him.\u00a0 You are the one who set the rules for the relationship.\u00a0 You are the one who initiated, pursued, and pursued.\u00a0 You really made him into what you wanted him to be.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, yes, guys going mild contributes to girls going wild; and girls going wild also in a very large way, I think, contributes to guys going mild, especially in this culture because we are told, \u201cIt is appropriate for women to be in control because guys have been in control for so long.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>\u201c<\/strong>So women need to take a hold of the reigns.\u00a0 It is appropriate for women to be the initiators in male-female relationships and for women to just get out there and grab hold of power and go get want they want.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I want to ask those women how that is working for them because if they take over and they dominate a man, and a man doesn\u2019t lead, and a man doesn\u2019t protect, and a man doesn\u2019t do the noble things that a man is, I believe, given responsibility by God to do\u2014whether in a marriage or outside of a marriage.\u00a0 I mean as men, we are really the protectors of the culture.\u00a0 We are given responsibility to do that.\u00a0 When we don\u2019t step up and do that, women have to step up on their own; or they think, at least, that they have to step up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I want to test my thesis on you because I was interested to hear your answer to Dennis\u2019 question.\u00a0 Here is my thesis:\u00a0 Men, post-war in the United States at least, come home from World War II.\u00a0 They have done the noble thing.\u00a0 They have been the protectors.\u00a0 They are back in the culture.\u00a0 They are given a lot of grace because they have come home as heroes.\u00a0 Right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn that, in the 50\u2019s and 60\u2019s, men got a lot of latitude for selfishness; and they expressed their selfishness and they built the world around them.\u00a0 The culture kind of allowed that to happen because, after all, \u201cThese men went off to war and we should give them some space.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And there weren\u2019t that many of them. The ones that came back\u2014we lost a lot of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That is right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So the ones that came back are really going to be treated well and with kid-gloves.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So after a season of men kind of indulging in their selfishness, I think, in the late 60\u2019s, I think a lot of women said, \u201cNow wait a sec.\u00a0 If guys can be selfish....\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 I think the feminist movement was, \u201cWe want the right to be as selfish as men have been allowed to be.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really do think the rise of feminism was not about, \u201cWe want,\u201d\u2014at some level\u2014\u201cWe want power, we want this, and we want that,\u201d but at some levels, \u201cI want the right to indulge selfishly the same way that men have been allowed to indulge selfishly in the culture.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was like, \u201cWhat about me?\u00a0 What about me?\u00a0 It is my turn.\u00a0 I want to do it now.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If you have women who are saying, \u201cWe need the right to be just as selfish.\u201d\u00a0 Here are the men who have gone wild in terms of indulging their own passions.\u00a0 Now women say, \u201cWe are going to go wild and indulge our own passions.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen they step in and say, \u201cWe want some of the power you have had, and we will be our own providers, and we will be this.\u201d\u00a0 That is the point, I think, when the men go, \u201cOkay.\u00a0 Alright.\u00a0 We will kick back.\u201d\u00a0 I think the going mild comes when women step in and say, \u201cWe are going to take responsibility for some of this.\u201d\u00a0 The guys go, \u201cFine.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 The easiest thing for a man to do is nothing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And let her do it almost like his mom did when he was a boy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Just hand me the video game controller and Cheetos, and have at it, Sweetheart!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is a safe way because he doesn\u2019t have to risk failing.\u00a0 It is all on her.\u00a0 Barbara and I were talking about this the other day.\u00a0 We were talking about what should a woman who is strong think about her husband who may not be strong like her in the same areas?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI told her, \u201cYou know, Sweetheart, I think God made us different.\u00a0 You are going to have strengths that I don\u2019t have.\u00a0 Your strengths shouldn\u2019t be a threat to me.\u00a0 They should be something that I try to find a way to help you exploit and use your strengths to the best of your ability for God\u2019s purposes on the planet.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is what I am responsible for as her husband\u2014to make sure that she ends up utilizing her life, and her gifts, and all that God has wrapped up in her.\u00a0 A lot of men don\u2019t do that.\u00a0 So the wife is left wondering, \u201cDo I need to do that for myself?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 \u201cAnd do I need to take control, and do I need to self-direct, and do I need to do all the things that my husband isn\u2019t doing?\u201d\u00a0 I think you bring up a good point.\u00a0 If the women are going, \u201cYes.\u00a0 You know, he is not stepping up.\u201d\u00a0 They are just right in there real quick, \u201cI\u2019m going to do it.\u00a0 I am going to provide all this direction.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is no vacuum.\u00a0 There is no perceived need on his part to do anything.\u00a0 I think that women who decide to just throw themselves in there, \u201cWell, I am not happy with the way he is doing it and the way in which he is doing it,\u201d and, \u201cHe is not doing what I think he ought to be doing so I am just going to take control here.\u201d\u00a0 I think that you do yourself a disservice by doing that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou do much better to pause and intercede with him\u2014take your marriage issue or the way that it is working out in your marriage\u2014take it to the Lord and start praying to Him about it.\u00a0 Really, just leave a little bit of a vacuum there.\u00a0 So that, \u201cNobody is filling the vacuum there quite yet,\u201d and asking the Lord to convict him about being a man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think there are two areas where that issue becomes very real for women in a marriage today.\u00a0 One is around raising the kids, and the other is around money.\u00a0 The vacuum that you are talking about\u2014here are the kids, and they are acting up.\u00a0 The wife says, \u201cSomebody has got to step in and tell these kids what to do.\u00a0 He\u2019s not doing it; I must.\u201d\u00a0 You are saying, \u201cBack off a little bit and let the tension grow, and see if he won\u2019t engage with it at some point.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think you need to make him aware of the situation, and then wait for his answer.\u00a0 Wait for him to come up with some sort of, \u201cHow do we deal with this?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Or invite him in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Invite him in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That is what I think\u2014some men don\u2019t feel the permission because perhaps the wife has already taken over.\u00a0 It is the wise woman who finds a way to invite her husband into the problem.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And you don\u2019t do that by saying, \u201cAre you going to do something about these kids?!\u201d\u00a0 That is not how you invite him in.<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You don\u2019t condemn him for his past passivity or his failure in the past.\u00a0 He may not know what to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He may feel completely inadequate; so when you say, \u201cWhat should we do?\u201d and he says, \u201cI don\u2019t know what we should do.\u201d\u00a0 Then the wife says, \u201cI know what we should do.\u00a0 We should do this and this and this.\u201d\u00a0 She is just taking over rather than saying, \u201cLet\u2019s talk together.\u00a0 Let\u2019s try to figure...\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u201cWhat are some of our options?\u00a0 Let\u2019s talk this over, and let\u2019s come up with a plan.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What we are talking about here is\u2014in marriage\u2014what is commonly called an egalitarian marriage where you have two heads\u2014you have two people who are in charge.\u00a0 There is no ultimate authority other than Jesus Christ.\u00a0 It is two people who are thought to be equal in all ways, including in authority, as compared to what is called a complementarian marriage which we believe is what the Bible teaches in terms of the husband being the sacrificial servant-leader and the one who is ultimately responsible for loving, and for caring, and leading his wife and his family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The one who bears the weight.\u00a0 That is the expression that I like to use because it is not so much about who is in charge.\u00a0 It is more about who bears the weight of what happens here.\u00a0 A man\u2019s shoulders were made to bear that weight.\u00a0 I am not sure a woman\u2019s shoulders were made for that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 I want to ask you this question, \u201cAs we see the church today, which way are women falling out on this issue of egalitarian marriage or complementarian marriage?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is interesting because I believe the default setting has changed.\u00a0 I believe that 20, 30 years ago you just had a basic understanding\u2014Christians as a whole had a basic understanding that the husband is the head of the home and the weight of the responsibility for what happens in his household rests on his shoulders.\u00a0 That was the basic understanding.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is his responsibility to make sure that the family is cared for, provided for, protected, that everything that goes on in these walls is as it ought to be.\u00a0 Ultimately, he is going to be held to account for that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt has shifted.\u00a0 Culture has caused that to shift.\u00a0 I believe that in the last five, ten years that you have seen a dramatic shift just in the default setting.\u00a0 It used to be that people were complementarian by default.\u00a0 They understood that there were role differences and that there were differences between men and women in the functioning of the home.\u00a0 That has shifted now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCulture has caused a shift so that even Christians believe, \u201cYou know what, it really doesn\u2019t matter who does what.\u00a0 As long as it is taken care of it doesn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 Men and women can function in the same way in the home.\u00a0 A guy can stay home and look after the kids as well as a woman can.\u00a0 If she has the capacity to earn a bigger income, then it doesn\u2019t matter if he stays home and stays with the kids and she goes out.\u00a0 Their roles are interchangeable.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe default setting has changed.\u00a0 Biblical womanhood and manhood must now be taught.\u00a0 It will not be caught.\u00a0 It has to be intentionally taught to the next generation because their default setting is one that role differences don\u2019t matter.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You mentioned before we came into the studio that a lot of leaders in the Christian community are not teaching what the Scripture says.\u00a0 They are avoiding passages of Scripture like this passage in my Bible here.\u00a0 It is like we rip it out of the Bible and ignore that the husband is to love his wife as Christ loved the church.\u00a0 When we get to the passage where he is the head of his wife\u2014he is the authority\u2014he is responsible\u2014he bears the weight, like Bob was talking about earlier\u2014we don\u2019t want to teach that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the process, how is that working for people who have these egalitarian marriages?\u00a0 What are you observing happening within the Christian community?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Within the Christian community, I take a look at these egalitarian marriages.\u00a0 A lot of them are struggling.\u00a0 They really are struggling.\u00a0 This give and take\u201450-50\u2014\u201cI\u2019ll do my part; you do your part,\u201d\u2014\u201cI will only give in response to what you give.\u00a0 It seems to work for a little while; but then when the pressures of life come and life goes on, it just doesn\u2019t end up working.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me tell you this, for a woman, eventually that weight becomes tiresome.\u00a0 She can bear some of that weight; but as you go along in your life, I think what you said, Bob, is just so perceptive\u2014that a man\u2019s shoulders were built by God to bear that weight.\u00a0 He rises to the occasion to provide that for his family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhereas a woman\u2014that weight wears on her.\u00a0 As years go by and she is carrying that weight, it becomes heavier and heavier and she gets tired.\u00a0 She realizes that that is not working so well.\u00a0 It is not very fulfilling.\u00a0 To have to work at changing the way the relationship works, and then desiring to see her husband change, and then to take her hands off that control\u2014that is a very difficult path to walk.\u00a0 I believe that is what happens over time if you are not honoring God\u2019s way of doing things in your marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There are some couples who would hear us talking about this and they say, \u201cWell look, we have worked it out for us.\u00a0 I mean, this is just who we are.\u00a0 He does this, and I do that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are not talking about who oversees the checkbook, or who takes care of the cars, or who cuts the grass.\u00a0 All of that stuff is up for grabs.\u00a0 That is not what the Bible is talking about when it talks about headship or when it talks about respect or submission.\u00a0 It is the couple who says, \u201cI\u2019ll bear the weight here, and you\u2019ll bear the weight here.\u00a0 We\u2019ll just figure that out on our own.\u201d\u00a0 You may say, \u201cPragmatically, that works for us.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we would say back to you is, \u201cNo. 1:\u00a0 We don\u2019t think that will work for you long-term.\u00a0 We think that long-term that weight is ultimately going to be oppressive and crushing.\u00a0 Secondly, even if it works for you, there is a bigger issue at stake here.\u00a0 That is the picture your egalitarian relationship is painting of the relationship between Christ and the church.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That is true, Bob.\u00a0 There is a much bigger picture here.\u00a0 There is something much bigger at risk.\u00a0 We are taught in Scripture that we are created male and female for a very specific purpose\u2014to bring glory to God and to bear witness.\u00a0 It is like we are this storybook to display who God is and to display the relationship of Jesus Christ to His church.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we do marriage right, we put God on display.\u00a0 We put the gospel on display.\u00a0 It is bigger than us.\u00a0 It is bigger than me and my husband and figuring out who does what and who wears the pants.\u00a0 It is not about us.\u00a0 It is about God, and it is about displaying truths about His character and the nature of the relationship between Christ and the church.\u00a0 So there is a lot at risk.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes, maybe you can make it work; but in making it work, and in just deciding for yourself, you are not bringing honor to God and glory to God in the way He would have you in your marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think about our discussions this week and all that we have talked about\u2014Girls Gone Wild\u2014and why there is this giant identity crisis among females.\u00a0 As I have mentioned, I have just finished a book for men, where I think there is an identity crisis with men.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou don\u2019t homogenize the sexes without bearing the consequences of erasing the distinctives that God put within them.\u00a0 There is a reason why a man is different than a woman.\u00a0 They are not two interchangeable units.\u00a0 We are made in the image of God to complement God in marriage\u2014a male and female together.\u00a0 As single people, a single person in the church is meant to reflect God\u2019s glory as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we erase those distinctives, that becomes extremely dangerous, not only for the individuals, but importantly for the next generation.\u00a0 Where are the boys and girls going to get the picture of what a real man is, and what a real man does, and what is the responsibility of a man?\u00a0 What is the responsibility and what does a godly woman look like?\u00a0 Who is she, and how does she relate to her man?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And if lose that picture, we lose ourselves.\u00a0 We lose who God made us to be.\u00a0 We don\u2019t bear witness to it.\u00a0 We don\u2019t display the beauty of that.\u00a0 We also really lose ourselves.\u00a0 We lose who God created us to be in our relationships, and we fail to pass the baton to the next generation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou are right.\u00a0 How are they going to know?\u00a0 If there is no difference between men and women, then it doesn\u2019t matter if a man is with a man, or a woman is with a woman, and gender doesn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 If it doesn\u2019t matter who we are as male and female, then what is marriage?\u00a0 Marriage is just a deal between two individuals\u2014whoever wants to get together can get together.\u00a0 It is not about us.\u00a0 It is not about humans.\u00a0 It is ultimately about living according to God\u2019s design and bringing Him glory.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think of all the institutions today that are poisoning the next generation.\u00a0 It is the educational institutions of North America.\u00a0 You are from Canada; we are from the U.S.\u00a0 America\u2019s universities have been teaching to this drumbeat of feminist ideology for now the better part of three decades.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the only two institutions that can withstand the onslaught are the combination of the church and the family.\u00a0 The church courageously teaching what the Bible teaches, and secondly, families\u2014even in their imperfect state\u2014living it out\u2014hammering out life\u2014when they fail, confessing their sins to one another and training their sons and daughters in what it looks like.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, I think what we need to encourage parents to do here is\u2014a lot of them have sons and daughters who are in college today.\u00a0 This book right here would be a great gift for the next birthday for your daughter, who is either going to college or in college today, or perhaps, a single woman who is not married.\u00a0 This would really be a great book to help, perhaps, stem some of the current that the culture is throwing at us and bring some biblical teaching to bear against it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I have actually wondered about giving the book to my sons.\u00a0 Have your boys read this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>My boys have read it.\u00a0 My son was handing it out to a bunch of his hockey-player friends.\u00a0 They all wanted to read it because they wanted to know what to look for to find a girl who has gone wise.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I am kind of picturing a hockey player \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>With a lipstick \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019m thinking\u2014we have been talking about girls gone wise.\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking, \u201cI wonder if we could back.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Thanks.\u00a0 It is good to be with you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>She has written a book called <em>Girls Gone Wise<\/em> <em>in a World Gone Wild<\/em>.\u00a0 I want to ask you this question, and I have a disclaimer as I ask this question because I think men get the blame for almost everything that goes wrong.\u00a0 Let\u2019s face it\u2014we are responsible for a lot of it.\u00a0 Okay, I own that.\u00a0 But here is the question I want to ask you because you talk about, as Bob said, \u201cGirls gone wild.\u201d\u00a0 How much of that is to blame on men who have gone mild?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think the two go hand in hand.\u00a0 \u201cWhen men go mild, girls go wild; and when girls go wild, men go mild.\u201d\u00a0 It is a two-sided thing.\u00a0 One contributes to the other.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen you have men who are not living in a godly fashion\u2014they are not being men of the Word, and not loving in the way they ought to love, and not living in the way they ought to live, then women tend to say, \u201cYou know what, I am going to take things into my own hands.\u00a0 I am going to try and control him and make things go the way that I want them to go.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYoung girls nowadays see nothing wrong\u2014they have been taught that there is nothing wrong in the girl asking the guys out for dates, and the girls initiating the relationship, and the girls taking the lead in the relationship.\u00a0 You see this happening in relationships.\u00a0 I see this tendency in the young girls nowadays.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe trouble is\u2014I also see them five, ten years down the road when they are sitting there crying because they have gotten married to these guys and, \u201cOh, my husband is passive.\u00a0 He won\u2019t take any leadership.\u00a0 He just sits on the couch.\u00a0 He doesn\u2019t take initiative in our family and in our home.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI look at them and, \u201cWhat did you expect?\u00a0 You are the one who pursued him.\u00a0 You are the one who set the rules for the relationship.\u00a0 You are the one who initiated, pursued, and pursued.\u00a0 You really made him into what you wanted him to be.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, yes, guys going mild contributes to girls going wild; and girls going wild also in a very large way, I think, contributes to guys going mild, especially in this culture because we are told, \u201cIt is appropriate for women to be in control because guys have been in control for so long.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>\u201c<\/strong>So women need to take a hold of the reigns.\u00a0 It is appropriate for women to be the initiators in male-female relationships and for women to just get out there and grab hold of power and go get want they want.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I want to ask those women how that is working for them because if they take over and they dominate a man, and a man doesn\u2019t lead, and a man doesn\u2019t protect, and a man doesn\u2019t do the noble things that a man is, I believe, given responsibility by God to do\u2014whether in a marriage or outside of a marriage.\u00a0 I mean as men, we are really the protectors of the culture.\u00a0 We are given responsibility to do that.\u00a0 When we don\u2019t step up and do that, women have to step up on their own; or they think, at least, that they have to step up. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I want to test my thesis on you because I was interested to hear your answer to Dennis\u2019 question.\u00a0 Here is my thesis:\u00a0 Men, post-war in the United States at least, come home from World War II.\u00a0 They have done the noble thing.\u00a0 They have been the protectors.\u00a0 They are back in the culture.\u00a0 They are given a lot of grace because they have come home as heroes.\u00a0 Right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn that, in the 50\u2019s and 60\u2019s, men got a lot of latitude for selfishness; and they expressed their selfishness and they built the world around them.\u00a0 The culture kind of allowed that to happen because, after all, \u201cThese men went off to war and we should give them some space.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And there weren\u2019t that many of them. The ones that came back\u2014we lost a lot of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That is right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So the ones that came back are really going to be treated well and with kid-gloves.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So after a season of men kind of indulging in their selfishness, I think, in the late 60\u2019s, I think a lot of women said, \u201cNow wait a sec.\u00a0 If guys can be selfish....\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 I think the feminist movement was, \u201cWe want the right to be as selfish as men have been allowed to be.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really do think the rise of feminism was not about, \u201cWe want,\u201d\u2014at some level\u2014\u201cWe want power, we want this, and we want that,\u201d but at some levels, \u201cI want the right to indulge selfishly the same way that men have been allowed to indulge selfishly in the culture.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was like, \u201cWhat about me?\u00a0 What about me?\u00a0 It is my turn.\u00a0 I want to do it now.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If you have women who are saying, \u201cWe need the right to be just as selfish.\u201d\u00a0 Here are the men who have gone wild in terms of indulging their own passions.\u00a0 Now women say, \u201cWe are going to go wild and indulge our own passions.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen they step in and say, \u201cWe want some of the power you have had, and we will be our own providers, and we will be this.\u201d\u00a0 That is the point, I think, when the men go, \u201cOkay.\u00a0 Alright.\u00a0 We will kick back.\u201d\u00a0 I think the going mild comes when women step in and say, \u201cWe are going to take responsibility for some of this.\u201d\u00a0 The guys go, \u201cFine.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 The easiest thing for a man to do is nothing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And let her do it almost like his mom did when he was a boy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Just hand me the video game controller and Cheetos, and have at it, Sweetheart!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is a safe way because he doesn\u2019t have to risk failing.\u00a0 It is all on her.\u00a0 Barbara and I were talking about this the other day.\u00a0 We were talking about what should a woman who is strong think about her husband who may not be strong like her in the same areas?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI told her, \u201cYou know, Sweetheart, I think God made us different.\u00a0 You are going to have strengths that I don\u2019t have.\u00a0 Your strengths shouldn\u2019t be a threat to me.\u00a0 They should be something that I try to find a way to help you exploit and use your strengths to the best of your ability for God\u2019s purposes on the planet.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is what I am responsible for as her husband\u2014to make sure that she ends up utilizing her life, and her gifts, and all that God has wrapped up in her.\u00a0 A lot of men don\u2019t do that.\u00a0 So the wife is left wondering, \u201cDo I need to do that for myself?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 \u201cAnd do I need to take control, and do I need to self-direct, and do I need to do all the things that my husband isn\u2019t doing?\u201d\u00a0 I think you bring up a good point.\u00a0 If the women are going, \u201cYes.\u00a0 You know, he is not stepping up.\u201d\u00a0 They are just right in there real quick, \u201cI\u2019m going to do it.\u00a0 I am going to provide all this direction.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere is no vacuum.\u00a0 There is no perceived need on his part to do anything.\u00a0 I think that women who decide to just throw themselves in there, \u201cWell, I am not happy with the way he is doing it and the way in which he is doing it,\u201d and, \u201cHe is not doing what I think he ought to be doing so I am just going to take control here.\u201d\u00a0 I think that you do yourself a disservice by doing that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou do much better to pause and intercede with him\u2014take your marriage issue or the way that it is working out in your marriage\u2014take it to the Lord and start praying to Him about it.\u00a0 Really, just leave a little bit of a vacuum there.\u00a0 So that, \u201cNobody is filling the vacuum there quite yet,\u201d and asking the Lord to convict him about being a man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think there are two areas where that issue becomes very real for women in a marriage today.\u00a0 One is around raising the kids, and the other is around money.\u00a0 The vacuum that you are talking about\u2014here are the kids, and they are acting up.\u00a0 The wife says, \u201cSomebody has got to step in and tell these kids what to do.\u00a0 He\u2019s not doing it; I must.\u201d\u00a0 You are saying, \u201cBack off a little bit and let the tension grow, and see if he won\u2019t engage with it at some point.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think you need to make him aware of the situation, and then wait for his answer.\u00a0 Wait for him to come up with some sort of, \u201cHow do we deal with this?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Or invite him in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Invite him in.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That is what I think\u2014some men don\u2019t feel the permission because perhaps the wife has already taken over.\u00a0 It is the wise woman who finds a way to invite her husband into the problem.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And you don\u2019t do that by saying, \u201cAre you going to do something about these kids?!\u201d\u00a0 That is not how you invite him in.<br>\u00a0\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You don\u2019t condemn him for his past passivity or his failure in the past.\u00a0 He may not know what to do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He may feel completely inadequate; so when you say, \u201cWhat should we do?\u201d and he says, \u201cI don\u2019t know what we should do.\u201d\u00a0 Then the wife says, \u201cI know what we should do.\u00a0 We should do this and this and this.\u201d\u00a0 She is just taking over rather than saying, \u201cLet\u2019s talk together.\u00a0 Let\u2019s try to figure...\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>\u201cWhat are some of our options?\u00a0 Let\u2019s talk this over, and let\u2019s come up with a plan.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What we are talking about here is\u2014in marriage\u2014what is commonly called an egalitarian marriage where you have two heads\u2014you have two people who are in charge.\u00a0 There is no ultimate authority other than Jesus Christ.\u00a0 It is two people who are thought to be equal in all ways, including in authority, as compared to what is called a complementarian marriage which we believe is what the Bible teaches in terms of the husband being the sacrificial servant-leader and the one who is ultimately responsible for loving, and for caring, and leading his wife and his family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The one who bears the weight.\u00a0 That is the expression that I like to use because it is not so much about who is in charge.\u00a0 It is more about who bears the weight of what happens here.\u00a0 A man\u2019s shoulders were made to bear that weight.\u00a0 I am not sure a woman\u2019s shoulders were made for that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 I want to ask you this question, \u201cAs we see the church today, which way are women falling out on this issue of egalitarian marriage or complementarian marriage?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is interesting because I believe the default setting has changed.\u00a0 I believe that 20, 30 years ago you just had a basic understanding\u2014Christians as a whole had a basic understanding that the husband is the head of the home and the weight of the responsibility for what happens in his household rests on his shoulders.\u00a0 That was the basic understanding.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is his responsibility to make sure that the family is cared for, provided for, protected, that everything that goes on in these walls is as it ought to be.\u00a0 Ultimately, he is going to be held to account for that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt has shifted.\u00a0 Culture has caused that to shift.\u00a0 I believe that in the last five, ten years that you have seen a dramatic shift just in the default setting.\u00a0 It used to be that people were complementarian by default.\u00a0 They understood that there were role differences and that there were differences between men and women in the functioning of the home.\u00a0 That has shifted now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tCulture has caused a shift so that even Christians believe, \u201cYou know what, it really doesn\u2019t matter who does what.\u00a0 As long as it is taken care of it doesn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 Men and women can function in the same way in the home.\u00a0 A guy can stay home and look after the kids as well as a woman can.\u00a0 If she has the capacity to earn a bigger income, then it doesn\u2019t matter if he stays home and stays with the kids and she goes out.\u00a0 Their roles are interchangeable.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe default setting has changed.\u00a0 Biblical womanhood and manhood must now be taught.\u00a0 It will not be caught.\u00a0 It has to be intentionally taught to the next generation because their default setting is one that role differences don\u2019t matter.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You mentioned before we came into the studio that a lot of leaders in the Christian community are not teaching what the Scripture says.\u00a0 They are avoiding passages of Scripture like this passage in my Bible here.\u00a0 It is like we rip it out of the Bible and ignore that the husband is to love his wife as Christ loved the church.\u00a0 When we get to the passage where he is the head of his wife\u2014he is the authority\u2014he is responsible\u2014he bears the weight, like Bob was talking about earlier\u2014we don\u2019t want to teach that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn the process, how is that working for people who have these egalitarian marriages?\u00a0 What are you observing happening within the Christian community?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Within the Christian community, I take a look at these egalitarian marriages.\u00a0 A lot of them are struggling.\u00a0 They really are struggling.\u00a0 This give and take\u201450-50\u2014\u201cI\u2019ll do my part; you do your part,\u201d\u2014\u201cI will only give in response to what you give.\u00a0 It seems to work for a little while; but then when the pressures of life come and life goes on, it just doesn\u2019t end up working.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLet me tell you this, for a woman, eventually that weight becomes tiresome.\u00a0 She can bear some of that weight; but as you go along in your life, I think what you said, Bob, is just so perceptive\u2014that a man\u2019s shoulders were built by God to bear that weight.\u00a0 He rises to the occasion to provide that for his family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhereas a woman\u2014that weight wears on her.\u00a0 As years go by and she is carrying that weight, it becomes heavier and heavier and she gets tired.\u00a0 She realizes that that is not working so well.\u00a0 It is not very fulfilling.\u00a0 To have to work at changing the way the relationship works, and then desiring to see her husband change, and then to take her hands off that control\u2014that is a very difficult path to walk.\u00a0 I believe that is what happens over time if you are not honoring God\u2019s way of doing things in your marriage.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There are some couples who would hear us talking about this and they say, \u201cWell look, we have worked it out for us.\u00a0 I mean, this is just who we are.\u00a0 He does this, and I do that.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are not talking about who oversees the checkbook, or who takes care of the cars, or who cuts the grass.\u00a0 All of that stuff is up for grabs.\u00a0 That is not what the Bible is talking about when it talks about headship or when it talks about respect or submission.\u00a0 It is the couple who says, \u201cI\u2019ll bear the weight here, and you\u2019ll bear the weight here.\u00a0 We\u2019ll just figure that out on our own.\u201d\u00a0 You may say, \u201cPragmatically, that works for us.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat we would say back to you is, \u201cNo. 1:\u00a0 We don\u2019t think that will work for you long-term.\u00a0 We think that long-term that weight is ultimately going to be oppressive and crushing.\u00a0 Secondly, even if it works for you, there is a bigger issue at stake here.\u00a0 That is the picture your egalitarian relationship is painting of the relationship between Christ and the church.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That is true, Bob.\u00a0 There is a much bigger picture here.\u00a0 There is something much bigger at risk.\u00a0 We are taught in Scripture that we are created male and female for a very specific purpose\u2014to bring glory to God and to bear witness.\u00a0 It is like we are this storybook to display who God is and to display the relationship of Jesus Christ to His church.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we do marriage right, we put God on display.\u00a0 We put the gospel on display.\u00a0 It is bigger than us.\u00a0 It is bigger than me and my husband and figuring out who does what and who wears the pants.\u00a0 It is not about us.\u00a0 It is about God, and it is about displaying truths about His character and the nature of the relationship between Christ and the church.\u00a0 So there is a lot at risk.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYes, maybe you can make it work; but in making it work, and in just deciding for yourself, you are not bringing honor to God and glory to God in the way He would have you in your marriage.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think about our discussions this week and all that we have talked about\u2014Girls Gone Wild\u2014and why there is this giant identity crisis among females.\u00a0 As I have mentioned, I have just finished a book for men, where I think there is an identity crisis with men.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou don\u2019t homogenize the sexes without bearing the consequences of erasing the distinctives that God put within them.\u00a0 There is a reason why a man is different than a woman.\u00a0 They are not two interchangeable units.\u00a0 We are made in the image of God to complement God in marriage\u2014a male and female together.\u00a0 As single people, a single person in the church is meant to reflect God\u2019s glory as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we erase those distinctives, that becomes extremely dangerous, not only for the individuals, but importantly for the next generation.\u00a0 Where are the boys and girls going to get the picture of what a real man is, and what a real man does, and what is the responsibility of a man?\u00a0 What is the responsibility and what does a godly woman look like?\u00a0 Who is she, and how does she relate to her man?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And if lose that picture, we lose ourselves.\u00a0 We lose who God made us to be.\u00a0 We don\u2019t bear witness to it.\u00a0 We don\u2019t display the beauty of that.\u00a0 We also really lose ourselves.\u00a0 We lose who God created us to be in our relationships, and we fail to pass the baton to the next generation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou are right.\u00a0 How are they going to know?\u00a0 If there is no difference between men and women, then it doesn\u2019t matter if a man is with a man, or a woman is with a woman, and gender doesn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 If it doesn\u2019t matter who we are as male and female, then what is marriage?\u00a0 Marriage is just a deal between two individuals\u2014whoever wants to get together can get together.\u00a0 It is not about us.\u00a0 It is not about humans.\u00a0 It is ultimately about living according to God\u2019s design and bringing Him glory.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think of all the institutions today that are poisoning the next generation.\u00a0 It is the educational institutions of North America.\u00a0 You are from Canada; we are from the U.S.\u00a0 America\u2019s universities have been teaching to this drumbeat of feminist ideology for now the better part of three decades.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the only two institutions that can withstand the onslaught are the combination of the church and the family.\u00a0 The church courageously teaching what the Bible teaches, and secondly, families\u2014even in their imperfect state\u2014living it out\u2014hammering out life\u2014when they fail, confessing their sins to one another and training their sons and daughters in what it looks like.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBob, I think what we need to encourage parents to do here is\u2014a lot of them have sons and daughters who are in college today.\u00a0 This book right here would be a great gift for the next birthday for your daughter, who is either going to college or in college today, or perhaps, a single woman who is not married.\u00a0 This would really be a great book to help, perhaps, stem some of the current that the culture is throwing at us and bring some biblical teaching to bear against it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I have actually wondered about giving the book to my sons.\u00a0 Have your boys read this?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>My boys have read it.\u00a0 My son was handing it out to a bunch of his hockey-player friends.\u00a0 They all wanted to read it because they wanted to know what to look for to find a girl who has gone wise.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I am kind of picturing a hockey player \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t[laughter] \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>With a lipstick book.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>With a lipstick book.\u00a0 I am not sure about that, Mary; but it sure has been fun having you on the
