and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We are going to talk today to a medical doctor\u2014a mom who has walked a very difficult path\u2014raising a son who is severely autistic.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 If there are special-needs situations in any family, there are challenges that go along with that.\u00a0 We are going to focus on this week on a particular special-needs situation that a lot of families are finding themselves dealing with.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You are exactly right, Bob.\u00a0 To deal with this special subject, we have Dr. Laura\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHendrickson!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>There you go!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Dr. Laura Hendrickson joining us on <em>\u2026<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The other Dr. Laura, who listens often...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yeah.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Is going, \u201cWait!\u00a0 I don\u2019t remember being on their program.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yeah.\u00a0 There you go!\u00a0 I just want to make sure our listeners were listening today.\u00a0 That is really good.\u00a0 Laura, welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Thank you\u2014Dennis.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Laura is a trained psychiatrist.\u00a0 She is a speaker at women\u2019s retreats and events around the country, and an author of a number of books, and the mother of an adult son.\u00a0 She has written a book called <em>Finding Your Child\u2019s Way on the Autism Spectrum<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLaura, you speak of autism having a spectrum.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That is right.\u00a0 There are three basic problems that are present in all children who have the autism spectrum diagnosis, in varying degrees.\u00a0 They may have difficulty with communication that may go all the way from not speaking at all\u2014which was the way my son began his life\u2014to not very noticeable at all.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey are going to have difficulties with cognition\u2014that is, understanding the world around them.\u00a0 That can vary from severe, again, to very mild; but there is always some of that present.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen there are difficulties understanding people in particular.\u00a0 That is what many people think of when they think of autism.\u00a0 On the autism spectrum, even those who are very mildly affected will typically have some difficulty understanding people.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Laura, I don\u2019t want to get too heavy right off the start, but you are a trained physician\u2014psychiatrist.\u00a0 I want you to pull back from that as a mom and as a student of the Bible.\u00a0 What do you think God is up to when we have children who struggle with autism?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have struggled with this for more than two decades with your son and seen great victories.\u00a0 You are going to hear a great story here that this young man Eric\u2014I mean right now, it is really cool.\u00a0 He is on his way back from China, having been there for how long?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Six weeks.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Six weeks...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Independently, right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>All by himself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It really is a great story.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t happen in all cases, as you have just said.\u00a0 In the more extreme cases, that is not going to happen at all; but what do you think God is up to when He allows a child to be born to a couple who struggles with this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Actually, before Eric was conceived,I had difficulty conceiving because I was an older mother.\u00a0 I prayed, \u201cGive me a son, Lord; and all the days of his life, he will serve you,\u201d\u2014Hannah\u2019s prayer.\u00a0 I immediately became pregnant and carried that pregnancy.\u00a0 I had had several miscarriages.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNaturally, I thought my son was going to be some sort of great man\u2014some sort of missionary or pastor who would glorify God in the usual ways that we think of when we think of God glorifying Himself; but you know, the Bible tells us that God has created all of us\u2014those with special needs and those without them to glorify Him.\u00a0 People with difficulties glorify Him in ways that may be difficult for us to understand, but we have to believe that that is so.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMany times we are taught that autism happens as a kind of developmental accident as though God didn\u2019t have anything to do with that.\u00a0 Scripture doesn\u2019t allow us to believe that, does it?\u00a0 Psalm 139 tells us that God knit us together in our mother\u2019s womb.\u00a0 It also says that He planned out all of our days, right from the beginning.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRight as soon as Eric was diagnosed, I had a terrible theological problem:\u00a0 \u201cWhat, indeed, is God up to?\u201d\u00a0 That has been the journey that the Lord has had me on for\u2014now, nearly 22 years, wondering, \u201cHow is God going to glorify Himself out of this circumstance?\u201d\u00a0 As a result, my whole definition of what God\u2019s glory is and how He is glorified really underwent a tremendous change.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Help me understand how autism is seen in the medical community.\u00a0 It is not a disease.\u00a0 Is it a disorder?\u00a0 Is it brain-related?\u00a0 What do we know about it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The medical community sees it as a disorder of brain development.\u00a0 In other words, something went wrong in development.\u00a0 I think that probably some people have autism genes.\u00a0 My older brother, in retrospect\u2014he is no longer with us.\u00a0 He passed away some years ago; but I believe he had Asperger\u2019s syndrome.\u00a0 The genes were present.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDoctors tend to view autism as something wrong with the brain.\u00a0 On one level, that is true.\u00a0 The autism-spectrum brain does not operate as efficiently as other people\u2019s brains.\u00a0 That is what causes a lot of the trouble.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn another level, is it really true that there is something wrong with the brain of an autism-spectrum person that needs to be fixed?\u00a0 Very often, the way doctors talk\u2014 make it sound as though that is exactly what it is\u2014that the child has deficits.\u00a0 Those deficits need to be, what they call, remediated so that the child can have a life just like everybody else\u2019s.\u00a0 I bought into that, too, when Eric was young; but as I have gotten older and older and met more and more people on the autism spectrum, I have become more and more convinced\u2014particularly understanding God\u2019s sovereignty\u2014that God intended this.\u00a0 God caused my child to be born with a different brain.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI am not going to say, \u201cabnormal\u201d because what is \u201cnormal\u201d?\u00a0 God has created a full spectrum of all kinds of individual behaviors.\u00a0 God created my son different.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t mean I sit back and say, \u201cOh, well, he is different; and he can\u2019t help it.\u201d\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I believe that God put things into his life for a purpose.\u00a0 My job as a parent is to try and draw those things out of him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I say, \u201cThis is not acceptable, and this needs to be fixed.\u201d\u00a0 What am I saying about God\u2019s work?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And what are you saying about the person who is born with the disorder in their brain?\u00a0 You are saying what the Scripture teach us\u2014is that person\u2014your son Eric\u2014from the very beginning\u2014was created in the image of God, had value, worth, dignity, and that, \u201cYes, he could be used by God for a plan that God has for his life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to go back all the way to the beginning to a song that you used to sing to Eric.\u00a0 It was\u2014I am not remembering this song.\u00a0 You don\u2019t know this...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I know the one you are talking about...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know what, I was about to get there, Bob!\u00a0 I was going to tell Laura, \u201cShe doesn\u2019t know this about you, but Bob could probably sing this song right now.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You can fly; you can fly!\u00a0 You can fly\u2014right?\u00a0 Is that the one?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s not it?\u00a0 Oh, no!\u00a0 I thought I had it!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>This is a great moment.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That is Peter Pan.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, it is Peter Pan!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That is Peter Pan, but the song we have in mind is when Dumbo\u2019s mother cradled him and someone sang in the background, \u201cBaby Mine.\u201d\u00a0 The baby was being made fun of because he was different.\u00a0 Dumbo was born with those great big enormous ears.\u00a0 People made fun of him.\u00a0 She sang, \u201cDon\u2019t you cry.\u00a0 You are beautiful.\u00a0 You are precious just the way you are.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You used to sing that to your son, not knowing that some day he would have his own limitation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Dumbo experience.\u00a0 It is a long story how Eric got interested in Dumbo.\u00a0 Then I became interested in Dumbo.\u00a0 Suffice it to say, that I began to see Dumbo as a kind of metaphor for Eric\u2019s life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDumbo was born with those great big ears.\u00a0 As a result of having those great big ears, he tripped all the time; and people laughed at him.\u00a0 His mother was heartbroken and angry at the people who were cruel to him.\u00a0 That is another whole story because I have been there, too.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUltimately, Dumbo discovered that he was able to fly\u2014that those ears that got in his way when he was trying to walk because he tripped on them actually made perfect wings.\u00a0 He was born to fly.\u00a0 Eric was still very young when I began to think of Eric in the same way and began asking the Lord to show me how things that looked like unmitigated disasters in Eric\u2019s life could somehow turn out to be the seeds for some kind of flying of its own.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn other words, if we believe that God created Eric the way He did with intention and purpose, then we also have to believe that there is a purpose for even the things that maybe we don\u2019t understand right now.\u00a0 Nobody understood why Dumbo had to trip over those ears, but it was perfectly obvious in retrospect.\u00a0 Similarly, I believe that even in our very challenged children, there is the seed of something that is going to be a gift that God can use.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>How old was Eric when you first started to wonder, \u201cIs there something that is not right here?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Is that even the right way to ask that question because you already said, \u201cHe is different than what we would consider to be \u2018normal.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When I said, \u201cnot right,\u201d I mean is....\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That is exactly what I thought!\u00a0 I looked at him, and I said, \u201cThat baby is not right!\u201d\u00a0 They put him in my arms for the first time.\u00a0 There was something that was not like other brand-new newborn babies.\u00a0 Remember, I am a doctor; I know what newborn babies look like.\u00a0 My first thought was that he had autism.\u00a0 Of course, I spent the next two years trying to talk myself out of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Until you went to the beach one day.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 The Beach\u2014Dog Beach.\u00a0 When Eric was still very small, my husband and I thought it would be lovely for Eric to have a dog because we live two blocks away from a particular part of the beach in the San Diego area called Dog Beach where dogs were allowed off the leash.\u00a0 They could swim in the water.\u00a0 We visualized Eric playing in the surf with his very own puppy\u2014isn\u2019t that lovely and special?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, it didn\u2019t work out quite like that.\u00a0 Eric in his first\u2014almost two years of life\u2014tolerated being brought down to the water.\u00a0 Once he was old enough to begin expressing displeasure about being there, he wasn\u2019t happy to be there anymore.\u00a0\u00a0 On the other hand, the dog, Coco, absolutely had to swim every day.\u00a0 Life was just not worth living.\u00a0 She nagged; she hassled; she whined.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we went down to the beach to swim.\u00a0 Eric\u2014that one day\u2014started struggling and fighting to get out of my arms.\u00a0 I was carrying him because of the deep sand.\u00a0 It is a very wide beach\u2014it is hard to get down.\u00a0 He fought his way out of my arms.\u00a0 I put him down on the sand.\u00a0 I did what moms always do.\u00a0 I said, \u201cOkay, you stay there if you want to.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to the water.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUsually, you get about ten feet away from a two-year-old; and he is going to run back to his mother.\u00a0 Eric didn\u2019t.\u00a0 Ten feet\u201420 feet\u201430 feet\u2014He is still sitting on the sand, and he is as happy as a clam.\u00a0 Meanwhile, the dog is whining because she is afraid to go into the water if she can\u2019t see me.\u00a0 I am standing there thinking, \u201cThis is nuts.\u00a0 I have a dog that can\u2019t bear to go into the water if she can\u2019t see me and a child who is fine with me being a vast distance away from me.\u00a0 Something is wrong.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So the next day you found yourself in a doctor\u2019s office.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 I was prepared to hear language disorder\u2014that is another kind of diagnosis for kids who have not acquired language.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When the doctor says, \u201cWe think Eric is autistic...\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\u00a0 He said, \u201cHe has autism.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 Then he took out the DSM\u2014at the time it was III\u2014DSM III\u2014the psychiatric bible\u2014and showed me all the criteria and explained to me how Eric met each one.\u00a0 It was so obvious as he showed it to me.\u00a0 There was no question about whether he had made a mistake or whether he was right.\u00a0 I knew he was right.\u00a0 How could I have not known? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Your shoulders are slumping right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That occurred over 20 years ago.\u00a0 You are re-living that moment.\u00a0 What was it like as a mom to hear that word? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was like death!\u00a0 This was 20 years ago.\u00a0 It was before anyone I knew had heard anything about treatment.\u00a0 I had seen one child with autism in my medical training, but that was it!\u00a0 It was still believed to be a very rare disorder, and it was viewed to be completely hopeless.\u00a0 If Eric had a language disorder, he would probably speak one day; but if he had autism, he would probably never speak.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn talking with the doctor, that was just what he told me.\u00a0 He said, \u201cYes.\u00a0 He is almost three.\u00a0 He does not have language yet.\u00a0 He probably won\u2019t speak.\u00a0 I can see that he is functioning in the retarded level.\u00a0 That probably won\u2019t change either.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I went home and cried out before the Lord, \u201cWhy?!\u00a0 He was going to glorify You.\u201d\u00a0 Of course, here is this inadequate understanding of what is required by God\u2019s glory.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cHow can it be that God answered my prayer?\u00a0 Two weeks after I prayed that prayer, I was pregnant with Eric.\u00a0 I miscarried before.\u00a0 I miscarried after.\u00a0 Eric was the child of promise.\u201d\u00a0 I felt like Abraham when God told him to sacrifice Isaac.\u00a0 \u201cHow can this be?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, I didn\u2019t stay there long because we are people of faith.\u00a0 We want to trust God.\u00a0 So I started right in on myself instead.\u00a0 \u201cI am bad.\u00a0 I did it to him.\u201d\u00a0 I was in a car accident when I was eight weeks\u2019 pregnant.\u00a0 I went without pain medicine for a week before I finally agreed to take something that the doctor said wouldn\u2019t hurt the baby; but, \u201cWas he wrong?\u00a0 If so, it was my fault and I did it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought about all the parenting choices that I made.\u00a0 We will sometimes do that because taking the blame for it ourselves feels safer than grappling with God\u2014where God\u2019s Word says He is good and that all He does is good.\u00a0 He brings good things out of it; and yet, this doesn\u2019t look good.\u00a0 So, someone must be bad here.\u00a0 It must be me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was going to ask you, \u201cAt what point did you question whether it was God who perhaps was bad?\u00a0 Did you ever get angry with Him and question what He was up to?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t.\u00a0 I think the way I figured it out was to get mad at myself\u2014blame myself\u2014and try not to think too hard about God.\u00a0 Initially, it was, \u201cGod, why?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t really want an answer to that because my understanding of God at that time wasn\u2019t big enough to see Him as someone who could\u2014yes, God causes all things to work together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose\u2014but not something this bad.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t imagine how God would bring glory out of that.\u00a0 I just didn\u2019t think about it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What you are modeling for us here is really a process of how a human being absorbs bad news or that which we would perceive as negative news.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was terrible news!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is the death of hope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>A young lady who miscarried a number of times\u2014now is finally a mother\u2014and now you are hearing the words, \u201cAutistic.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He was my only child, too, because I wasn\u2019t able to conceive again.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I know the rest of the story because I have been in your book; but I think the challenge for anyone who has received news they weren\u2019t expecting to hear is, \u201cWhat are you going to believe about God?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is interesting you pretty much believed the right thing about God.\u00a0 You turned on yourself at that moment.\u00a0 The real challenge is, I think, to go to the Scriptures and to not just rehearse or recite Romans 8:28...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That didn\u2019t work.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>\u201c<\/strong>That all things work together for good to those who love God and to those who are called according to His purpose,\u201d but to believe the truth about who God is and to say, \u201cOkay, God.\u00a0 I may not like this journey.\u00a0 In fact, I don\u2019t like this journey that I am embarking on; but let\u2019s go.\u00a0 Let\u2019s begin a journey of faith together.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know\u2014because we spent a little time before we came in here; and, Bob, you were part of the discussion before we came into the studio.\u00a0 Twenty years later, the understanding of who God is and what God is up to\u2014it\u2019s like you had just a little snapshot of who God was back then, but now there is a Technicolor story in your heart and mind that reminds us of the truth of who God is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But you start on that path years ago; Similarly, I believe that even in our very challenged children, there is the seed of something that is going to be a gift that God can use.\u00a0 psychiatrist.\u00a0 She is a speaker at women\u2019s retreats and events around the country, and an author of a number of books, and the mother of an adult son.\u00a0 She has written a book called <em>Finding Your Child\u2019s Way on the Autism Spectrum<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tLaura, you speak of autism having a spectrum.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That is right.\u00a0 There are three basic problems that are present in all children who have the autism spectrum diagnosis, in varying degrees.\u00a0 They may have difficulty with communication that may go all the way from not speaking at all\u2014which was the way my son began his life\u2014to not very noticeable at all.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey are going to have difficulties with cognition\u2014that is, understanding the world around them.\u00a0 That can vary from severe, again, to very mild; but there is always some of that present.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen there are difficulties understanding people in particular.\u00a0 That is what many people think of when they think of autism.\u00a0 On the autism spectrum, even those who are very mildly affected will typically have some difficulty understanding people.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Laura, I don\u2019t want to get too heavy right off the start, but you are a trained physician\u2014psychiatrist.\u00a0 I want you to pull back from that as a mom and as a student of the Bible.\u00a0 What do you think God is up to when we have children who struggle with autism?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have struggled with this for more than two decades with your son and seen great victories.\u00a0 You are going to hear a great story here that this young man Eric\u2014I mean right now, it is really cool.\u00a0 He is on his way back from China, having been there for how long?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Six weeks.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Six weeks...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Independently, right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>All by himself. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It really is a great story.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t happen in all cases, as you have just said.\u00a0 In the more extreme cases, that is not going to happen at all; but what do you think God is up to when He allows a child to be born to a couple who struggles with this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Actually, before Eric was conceived,I had difficulty conceiving because I was an older mother.\u00a0 I prayed, \u201cGive me a son, Lord; and all the days of his life, he will serve you,\u201d\u2014Hannah\u2019s prayer.\u00a0 I immediately became pregnant and carried that pregnancy.\u00a0 I had had several miscarriages.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNaturally, I thought my son was going to be some sort of great man\u2014some sort of missionary or pastor who would glorify God in the usual ways that we think of when we think of God glorifying Himself; but you know, the Bible tells us that God has created all of us\u2014those with special needs and those without them to glorify Him.\u00a0 People with difficulties glorify Him in ways that may be difficult for us to understand, but we have to believe that that is so.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMany times we are taught that autism happens as a kind of developmental accident as though God didn\u2019t have anything to do with that.\u00a0 Scripture doesn\u2019t allow us to believe that, does it?\u00a0 Psalm 139 tells us that God knit us together in our mother\u2019s womb.\u00a0 It also says that He planned out all of our days, right from the beginning.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRight as soon as Eric was diagnosed, I had a terrible theological problem:\u00a0 \u201cWhat, indeed, is God up to?\u201d\u00a0 That has been the journey that the Lord has had me on for\u2014now, nearly 22 years, wondering, \u201cHow is God going to glorify Himself out of this circumstance?\u201d\u00a0 As a result, my whole definition of what God\u2019s glory is and how He is glorified really underwent a tremendous change.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Help me understand how autism is seen in the medical community.\u00a0 It is not a disease.\u00a0 Is it a disorder?\u00a0 Is it brain-related?\u00a0 What do we know about it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The medical community sees it as a disorder of brain development.\u00a0 In other words, something went wrong in development.\u00a0 I think that probably some people have autism genes.\u00a0 My older brother, in retrospect\u2014he is no longer with us.\u00a0 He passed away some years ago; but I believe he had Asperger\u2019s syndrome.\u00a0 The genes were present.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDoctors tend to view autism as something wrong with the brain.\u00a0 On one level, that is true.\u00a0 The autism-spectrum brain does not operate as efficiently as other people\u2019s brains.\u00a0 That is what causes a lot of the trouble.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOn another level, is it really true that there is something wrong with the brain of an autism-spectrum person that needs to be fixed?\u00a0 Very often, the way doctors talk\u2014 make it sound as though that is exactly what it is\u2014that the child has deficits.\u00a0 Those deficits need to be, what they call, remediated so that the child can have a life just like everybody else\u2019s.\u00a0 I bought into that, too, when Eric was young; but as I have gotten older and older and met more and more people on the autism spectrum, I have become more and more convinced\u2014particularly understanding God\u2019s sovereignty\u2014that God intended this.\u00a0 God caused my child to be born with a different brain.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI am not going to say, \u201cabnormal\u201d because what is \u201cnormal\u201d?\u00a0 God has created a full spectrum of all kinds of individual behaviors.\u00a0 God created my son different.\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t mean I sit back and say, \u201cOh, well, he is different; and he can\u2019t help it.\u201d\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I believe that God put things into his life for a purpose.\u00a0 My job as a parent is to try and draw those things out of him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I say, \u201cThis is not acceptable, and this needs to be fixed.\u201d\u00a0 What am I saying about God\u2019s work?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And what are you saying about the person who is born with the disorder in their brain?\u00a0 You are saying what the Scripture teach us\u2014is that person\u2014your son Eric\u2014from the very beginning\u2014was created in the image of God, had value, worth, dignity, and that, \u201cYes, he could be used by God for a plan that God has for his life.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to go back all the way to the beginning to a song that you used to sing to Eric.\u00a0 It was\u2014I am not remembering this song.\u00a0 You don\u2019t know this...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I know the one you are talking about...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know what, I was about to get there, Bob!\u00a0 I was going to tell Laura, \u201cShe doesn\u2019t know this about you, but Bob could probably sing this song right now.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You can fly; you can fly!\u00a0 You can fly\u2014right?\u00a0 Is that the one?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That\u2019s not it?\u00a0 Oh, no!\u00a0 I thought I had it!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>This is a great moment.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That is Peter Pan.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, it is Peter Pan!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That is Peter Pan, but the song we have in mind is when Dumbo\u2019s mother cradled him and someone sang in the background, \u201cBaby Mine.\u201d\u00a0 The baby was being made fun of because he was different.\u00a0 Dumbo was born with those great big enormous ears.\u00a0 People made fun of him.\u00a0 She sang, \u201cDon\u2019t you cry.\u00a0 You are beautiful.\u00a0 You are precious just the way you are.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You used to sing that to your son, not knowing that some day he would have his own limitation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Dumbo experience.\u00a0 It is a long story how Eric got interested in Dumbo.\u00a0 Then I became interested in Dumbo.\u00a0 Suffice it to say, that I began to see Dumbo as a kind of metaphor for Eric\u2019s life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDumbo was born with those great big ears.\u00a0 As a result of having those great big ears, he tripped all the time; and people laughed at him.\u00a0 His mother was heartbroken and angry at the people who were cruel to him.\u00a0 That is another whole story because I have been there, too.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUltimately, Dumbo discovered that he was able to fly\u2014that those ears that got in his way when he was trying to walk because he tripped on them actually made perfect wings.\u00a0 He was born to fly.\u00a0 Eric was still very young when I began to think of Eric in the same way and began asking the Lord to show me how things that looked like unmitigated disasters in Eric\u2019s life could somehow turn out to be the seeds for some kind of flying of its own.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn other words, if we believe that God created Eric the way He did with intention and purpose, then we also have to believe that there is a purpose for even the things that maybe we don\u2019t understand right now.\u00a0 Nobody understood why Dumbo had to trip over those ears, but it was perfectly obvious in retrospect.\u00a0 Similarly, I believe that even in our very challenged children, there is the seed of something that is going to be a gift that God can use.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>How old was Eric when you first started to wonder, \u201cIs there something that is not right here?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Is that even the right way to ask that question because you already said, \u201cHe is different than what we would consider to be \u2018normal.\u2019\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When I said, \u201cnot right,\u201d I mean is....\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That is exactly what I thought!\u00a0 I looked at him, and I said, \u201cThat baby is not right!\u201d\u00a0 They put him in my arms for the first time.\u00a0 There was something that was not like other brand-new newborn babies.\u00a0 Remember, I am a doctor; I know what newborn babies look like.\u00a0 My first thought was that he had autism.\u00a0 Of course, I spent the next two years trying to talk myself out of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Until you went to the beach one day.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 The Beach\u2014Dog Beach.\u00a0 When Eric was still very small, my husband and I thought it would be lovely for Eric to have a dog because we live two blocks away from a particular part of the beach in the San Diego area called Dog Beach where dogs were allowed off the leash.\u00a0 They could swim in the water.\u00a0 We visualized Eric playing in the surf with his very own puppy\u2014isn\u2019t that lovely and special?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, it didn\u2019t work out quite like that.\u00a0 Eric in his first\u2014almost two years of life\u2014tolerated being brought down to the water.\u00a0 Once he was old enough to begin expressing displeasure about being there, he wasn\u2019t happy to be there anymore.\u00a0\u00a0 On the other hand, the dog, Coco, absolutely had to swim every day.\u00a0 Life was just not worth living.\u00a0 She nagged; she hassled; she whined.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo we went down to the beach to swim.\u00a0 Eric\u2014that one day\u2014started struggling and fighting to get out of my arms.\u00a0 I was carrying him because of the deep sand.\u00a0 It is a very wide beach\u2014it is hard to get down.\u00a0 He fought his way out of my arms.\u00a0 I put him down on the sand.\u00a0 I did what moms always do.\u00a0 I said, \u201cOkay, you stay there if you want to.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to the water.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUsually, you get about ten feet away from a two-year-old; and he is going to run back to his mother.\u00a0 Eric didn\u2019t.\u00a0 Ten feet\u201420 feet\u201430 feet\u2014He is still sitting on the sand, and he is as happy as a clam.\u00a0 Meanwhile, the dog is whining because she is afraid to go into the water if she can\u2019t see me.\u00a0 I am standing there thinking, \u201cThis is nuts.\u00a0 I have a dog that can\u2019t bear to go into the water if she can\u2019t see me and a child who is fine with me being a vast distance away from me.\u00a0 Something is wrong.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So the next day you found yourself in a doctor\u2019s office.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 I was prepared to hear language disorder\u2014that is another kind of diagnosis for kids who have not acquired language.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>When the doctor says, \u201cWe think Eric is autistic...\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\u00a0 He said, \u201cHe has autism.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 Then he took out the DSM\u2014at the time it was III\u2014DSM III\u2014the psychiatric bible\u2014and showed me all the criteria and explained to me how Eric met each one.\u00a0 It was so obvious as he showed it to me.\u00a0 There was no question about whether he had made a mistake or whether he was right.\u00a0 I knew he was right.\u00a0 How could I have not known? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Your shoulders are slumping right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That occurred over 20 years ago.\u00a0 You are re-living that moment.\u00a0 What was it like as a mom to hear that word? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was like death!\u00a0 This was 20 years ago.\u00a0 It was before anyone I knew had heard anything about treatment.\u00a0 I had seen one child with autism in my medical training, but that was it!\u00a0 It was still believed to be a very rare disorder, and it was viewed to be completely hopeless.\u00a0 If Eric had a language disorder, he would probably speak one day; but if he had autism, he would probably never speak.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn talking with the doctor, that was just what he told me.\u00a0 He said, \u201cYes.\u00a0 He is almost three.\u00a0 He does not have language yet.\u00a0 He probably won\u2019t speak.\u00a0 I can see that he is functioning in the retarded level.\u00a0 That probably won\u2019t change either.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I went home and cried out before the Lord, \u201cWhy?!\u00a0 He was going to glorify You.\u201d\u00a0 Of course, here is this inadequate understanding of what is required by God\u2019s glory.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cHow can it be that God answered my prayer?\u00a0 Two weeks after I prayed that prayer, I was pregnant with Eric.\u00a0 I miscarried before.\u00a0 I miscarried after.\u00a0 Eric was the child of promise.\u201d\u00a0 I felt like Abraham when God told him to sacrifice Isaac.\u00a0 \u201cHow can this be?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, I didn\u2019t stay there long because we are people of faith.\u00a0 We want to trust God.\u00a0 So I started right in on myself instead.\u00a0 \u201cI am bad.\u00a0 I did it to him.\u201d\u00a0 I was in a car accident when I was eight weeks\u2019 pregnant.\u00a0 I went without pain medicine for a week before I finally agreed to take something that the doctor said wouldn\u2019t hurt the baby; but, \u201cWas he wrong?\u00a0 If so, it was my fault and I did it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought about all the parenting choices that I made.\u00a0 We will sometimes do that because taking the blame for it ourselves feels safer than grappling with God\u2014where God\u2019s Word says He is good and that all He does is good.\u00a0 He brings good things out of it; and yet, this doesn\u2019t look good.\u00a0 So, someone must be bad here.\u00a0 It must be me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I was going to ask you, \u201cAt what point did you question whether it was God who perhaps was bad?\u00a0 Did you ever get angry with Him and question what He was up to?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>No.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t.\u00a0 I think the way I figured it out was to get mad at myself\u2014blame myself\u2014and try not to think too hard about God.\u00a0 Initially, it was, \u201cGod, why?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t really want an answer to that because my understanding of God at that time wasn\u2019t big enough to see Him as someone who could\u2014yes, God causes all things to work together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose\u2014but not something this bad.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t imagine how God would bring glory out of that.\u00a0 I just didn\u2019t think about it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>What you are modeling for us here is really a process of how a human being absorbs bad news or that which we would perceive as negative news.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It was terrible news!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is the death of hope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>A young lady who miscarried a number of times\u2014now is finally a mother\u2014and now you are hearing the words, \u201cAutistic.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>He was my only child, too, because I wasn\u2019t able to conceive again.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I know the rest of the story because I have been in your book; but I think the challenge for anyone who has received news they weren\u2019t expecting to hear is, \u201cWhat are you going to believe about God?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is interesting you pretty much believed the right thing about God.\u00a0 You turned on yourself at that moment.\u00a0 The real challenge is, I think, to go to the Scriptures and to not just rehearse or recite Romans 8:28...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Laura:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That didn\u2019t work.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>\u201c<\/strong>That all things work together for good to those who love God and to those who are called according to His purpose,\u201d but to believe the truth about who God is and to say, \u201cOkay, God.\u00a0 I may not like this journey.\u00a0 In fact, I don\u2019t like this journey that I am embarking on; but let\u2019s go.\u00a0 Let\u2019s begin a journey of faith together.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI know\u2014because we spent a little time before we came in here; and, Bob, you were part of the discussion before we came into the studio.\u00a0 Twenty years later, the understanding of who God is and what God is up to\u2014it\u2019s like you had just a little snapshot of who God was back then, but now there is a Technicolor story in your heart and mind that reminds us of the truth of who God is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>But you start on that path years ago; and you go, \u201cThis is not the path I would choose.\u00a0 It is not the path I even want to be on.\u201d\u00a0 Yet, in the midst of it, God says, \u201cI am with you.\u00a0 I am going to show you things that you wouldn\u2019t see otherwise.\u201d\u00a0 That doesn\u2019t make it easier necessarily, but it does give you a perspective that others don\u2019t get.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And, Bob, in those moments when we do get news we weren\u2019t expecting, I think it is really important to be with those who have been there ahead of you and have experienced it, and have a perspective, as you say, that they can share.\u00a0 That really is what Laura has done in her book.\u00a0
