generation.\u00a0 I think that our generation \u2013 it\u2019s kind of I guess the last job that God\u2019s given us to do, and so we have to do it second?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What are you writing down there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just a second.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you keep working on that.\u00a0 I\u2019m online here enrolling for Granny Camp.\u00a0 When I heard about the menu I said, down?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m just holding up a little sign that says, \u201cI love all parents.\u201d\u00a0 Because we kind of are running a poll to see what parents think of grandparents breaking a few of the family rules \u2013 you know, not all.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is it okay . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re not talking about an insurrection, but we are talking about maybe candy \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is all about sugar.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about sugar.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It really is sugar.\u00a0 It really is all about sugar, whether the parents think that\u2019s right.\u00a0 We\u2019re also running the same poll with grandparents.\u00a0 If you are grandparents, there\u2019s a poll for you to go to.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said earlier Bob that I was going to go this coming weekend to one of our children\u2019s houses and babysit the kids, and I was going to honor their rule of no sugar.\u00a0 To that, Ann Dierks, the author of <em>Granny Camp<\/em> and Camp Director of Granny Camp said, \u201cNo way, Jose.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cAbsolutely . . .\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And she planted a seed of rebellion in your heart at that moment didn\u2019t she?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve got a little bit of a drive yet before I arrive at our grandchildren\u2019s house, and I\u2019m going to have to sort through my conscience, Ann.\u00a0 Ann, welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 Thank you for having me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m really glad you\u2019ve written this book <em>Granny Camp<\/em>, because it\u2019s not all insurrection and rebellion.\u00a0 It\u2019s how to bond with your grandchildren.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s all about right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re coming up on your golden anniversary.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you developed this because your grandchildren ages 8 to18 came to Granny Camp for a number of years until they were about, what, 12,13, something like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, then their interests changed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve put together not all the lessons \u2013 but a whole lot of lessons and instruction about this.\u00a0 I have to ask you as we get started:\u00a0 As you look at all the experiences and memories you\u2019ve made as a grandparent, what\u2019s one of your favorite?\u00a0 Because you\u2019ve been doing this how long?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 About 13 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 13 years.\u00a0 So you\u2019ve had a lot of days.\u00a0 You started out doing this for two weeks.\u00a0 You cut it back to ten days, and then you cut it back to two-and-a-half hours.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo, it\u2019s actually \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 A week.\u00a0 It\u2019s a week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You cut it back to a week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s a week.\u00a0 We have done just a day when we couldn\u2019t do anything else, but generally it\u2019s a week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of my most memorable moments was like we said earlier; we had nine granddaughters born in five years.\u00a0 When I started having the first of those nine little girls, seven of them came.\u00a0 They were ages seven to four-and-a-half.\u00a0 None of them had ever been to Granny Camp, had no idea what Granny Camp was.\u00a0 They just knew they were going to Grandmother\u2019s and Granddad\u2019s house.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo my daughter, who has twin daughters, turned to one of her twins and said, \u201cWhat do you want to do at Granny Camp?\u201d\u00a0 Well, they had no idea.\u00a0 I mean, it just wasn\u2019t in their memory bank to know what it was all about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 She looked at her mother and she said, \u201cI want to make someone that\u2019s sad, happy.\u201d\u00a0 When she called and told me this I wiped the tears from my eyes, I put the phone down and I called \u2013 we live in a retirement community where they have a nursing home unit, and it has assisted living, nursing home, Alzheimer\u2019s unit, all of the above \u2013 and I called them and I said, \u201cI have these seven little girls who are all extroverts like their grandmother, and I\u2019m sure they would love to come and do a show at your nursing home.\u00a0 Would you like that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 A show.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 A show.\u00a0 So \u2013 they didn\u2019t know they were going to do a show.\u00a0 I just decided they were going to do a show.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You didn\u2019t even have a show at that point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter) \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 We didn\u2019t have a show, but I said, \u201cCan we come?\u201d and they said, \u201cYes, we\u2019d love it.\u201d\u00a0 So every year with the very first \u2013 after we go over the rules \u2013 they sit down after they\u2019ve been there about an hour, we go over the rules so we all know where we\u2019re coming from.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I say, \u201cOkay, what new songs, what new poems, and what new dance have you learned this year at school that you\u2019d like to include in the show?\u201d\u00a0 So we create our show within a matter of hours after they get there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOkay, we\u2019ll begin with singing <em>God Bless America<\/em> and we\u2019ll sing from <em>Sound of Music \u201cDoe a Deer,\u201d <\/em>you know, whatever.\u00a0 We have about ten things that we decide to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, when we come home from the swimming pool one day we practice.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then we practice one evening, and we have what we call \u201cRed, White and Blue Day\u201d and their mother and daddy send them a red, white and blue outfit.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t have to be fancy \u2013 just a red ribbon in their hair and blue pants, or a white shirt, or whatever.\u00a0 So we dress in our red, white and blue and we go to the nursing home and we do a show in all these places.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe night before they make cookies for the residents.\u00a0 We get to do that for the assisted living people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Great idea.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is absolutely wonderful.\u00a0 The patients love these children.\u00a0 One lady that couldn\u2019t come out of her room to come into the general area \u2013 the children went into her room and sang to her.\u00a0 They have pets at the nursing home that just come up and land at the children\u2019s feet and just are part of the show.\u00a0 It is just a wonderful thing that we do every year.\u00a0 So it came out of one little four-and-a-half year old, because she wanted to make somebody happy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amazing.\u00a0 You know, I could see Bob, because Bob is very musically talented \u2013 I could see Grandpa Bob\u2019s \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 And see, it doesn\u2019t have to be fancy.\u00a0 I mean, they sang <em>Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star<\/em> the first time \u2013 you know, all the little songs that kids sing.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t have to be wonderful.\u00a0 And they got their feet crossed and they\u2019re doing \u2013 you know, they stand in a line and do whatever.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I have to ask you a technical question at this point, because you mentioned earlier your grandchildren are in four states.\u00a0 So are ours.\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 That is always a huge logistical challenge, because none of them live here where we live, and so getting them \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 -- to Granny\u2019s Camp or Mimi and Papa\u2019s Cousin Day or whatever it is \u2013 Bob\u2019s Musical Talent \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Emporium.\u00a0 Emporium.\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How do you get them here?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, there\u2019s a chapter in my book about how to begin, and that is one of the big things that we talk about.\u00a0 You need to get your children started talking about it in about January \u2013 to say what their schedules are, if they know their summer schedule, when all families have a week when they\u2019re available, and then they start talking about how they\u2019re going to get them there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just made plane reservations for the Tampa group night before last, and they\u2019re going to fly in, and another son in Dallas is going to pick one part of them up on one day, and my daughter\u2019s driving in from Colorado, I mean, it\u2019s a lot of doing \u2013 and another one\u2019s flying in from Kansas City, and we\u2019re going to pick them up, and then \u2013 I let the children work it out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you help with the tickets?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I do sometimes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 And if a child isn\u2019t able to come for who knows what reason, as a grandparent you don\u2019t take it personally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, no.\u00a0 But I\u2019ve never had one not come.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There you go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Their parents want them to come, and they want to come, so we don\u2019t have a problem not getting them there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me ask you about that.\u00a0 What are mom and dad doing while the kids are at Grandparents Camp?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t ask. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey have a honeymoon week and they love it, so I don\u2019t ask what they do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You just take over the childcare and let mom and dad do whatever . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 They just do whatever they want to do.\u00a0 They just can\u2019t come to camp.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want them.\u00a0 It\u2019s too many bosses.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And again, what is the earliest they can come?\u00a0 What age?\u00a0 Three?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had them at three.\u00a0 My book says they have to be potty trained, and they definitely need to do that.\u00a0\u00a0 So it\u2019s an incentive for the parents to get their children potty trained, so they can come to Granny Camp.\u00a0 It\u2019s incentive for the parents, but really four-and-a-half to five is really the ideal age to start having them come for a week.\u00a0 You know, they don\u2019t want to stay away from home when they are really little, not more than a couple of days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Some of the older kids have wound up becoming counselors at Granny Camp?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and it\u2019s wonderful training, and I think probably they could get credit in their school for community service or whatever they call it, to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, I thought you were going to say \u201cminimum wage.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, they certainly get minimum wage.\u00a0 It is zero.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is good training that they get.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What do you have the counselors do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, they help with everything that grandmother needs done.\u00a0 When I had the three it was okay, but when I invited these seven little girls, I had a boss from where I work who had a fourteen-year-old daughter.\u00a0 I said, \u201cDo you think your daughter would like to come and be a counselor and bring a good friend?\u201d so they had each other.\u00a0 And so they did and it was wonderful.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey watch the children while you\u2019re getting ready for a picnic, or they watch the children while you\u2019re getting ready for dinner, or you know, you need them to help brush their hair in the morning, or help roll up the bedrolls and straighten up the room so you can use the room to dance in, or whatever you have to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou just call them when you need them, and then they get to be campers, too.\u00a0 They have fun.\u00a0 They get to go swimming, they get to go to the beach, they get to do crafts.\u00a0 They do all those things, but boy, when you need them you call them and they come.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then as those nine little girls grew up, then the two older ones for the last two or maybe three years have been my counselors.\u00a0 They are campers, but when dinner\u2019s coming, \u201cMeredith, Michelle, come here.\u00a0 You need to help me put dinner on.\u201d\u00a0 And they\u2019re just right there to help.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You mentioned bedrolls and I was wondering, because at one point you had eleven cousins all . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, all at once.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 . . . at the same house.\u00a0 Was this just sleeping bags all over the place?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s always been just bedrolls.\u00a0 We don\u2019t make beds.\u00a0 We make that really simple \u2013 that morning process.\u00a0\u00a0 When they get up they roll up their bedroll, they put their pajamas in their pillow, and we stack them all in one place out of the way so they\u2019re out of the way for the day, and then we just roll them out at night and put them out.\u00a0 I have a couch that makes into a bed, and I have a trundle bed, or we have blow-up mattresses, and we just line the room . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did Grandpa ever check into a hotel during Granny Camp?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, he really hasn\u2019t.\u00a0 He\u2019s very patient.\u00a0 He\u2019s a quiet, gentle man, and he\u2019s very patient with all of this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He paid for his own flight. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe paid for his own flight.\u00a0 You know, we\u2019ve been talking a lot here about being a grandmother and a grandfather, and I like what you have here.\u00a0 You have a chapter on \u201cWhat is a Granny?\u201d\u00a0 What is a grandmother?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust comment on that, because I think we all assume in this culture that everybody understands, but I think because of the disintegration of the family across the country I think there are a lot of families that don\u2019t experience grannies or grandpas much anymore.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think our main job is to pass on love from us to the children.\u00a0 I mean, that\u2019s the main thing Granny Camp is about \u2013 it\u2019s about love.\u00a0 But it\u2019s also to pass on your traditions that you\u2019ve grown up with that are special to you: your faith, your love of family, your dedication to work, your work ethic, the things that are important to you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is a way to do it, especially when you live thousands of miles away from each other.\u00a0 But it\u2019s a time \u2013 and you know it\u2019s kind of I guess the last job that God has given us to do, and so we have to do it well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBeing a part of grandchildren\u2019s lives is another dimension that I didn\u2019t have, and my husband didn\u2019t have, and we just felt that it was so important that our grandchildren knew that older generation.\u00a0 I think that our generation has values that are no longer around today.\u00a0 They are in some places, but they are not as prevalent as they were when we grew up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen some of those bumper stickers on-- maybe it\u2019s RVs or trailers-- that say, \u201cI\u2019m spending my children\u2019s inheritance.\u201d\u00a0 On one hand, it\u2019s cute, and on another hand it\u2019s like, \u201cI just wonder if the lives of those people that put a bumper sticker that kind of declares that to the world \u2013 if they really are attempting to build into the lives of their grandchildren.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really like where you went, where you started: love.\u00a0 The whole concept of a relationship \u2013 it\u2019s the great commandment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Love God and love others as you love yourself.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019d add a couple more to your list, which I thought was excellent.\u00a0 I\u2019d say one thing grandparents ought to be doing is passing on the truth from the Bible that is most meaningful to them . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 . . . and just finding creative ways to pass that truth on.\u00a0 Then a second thing I\u2019d say grandparents ought to be involved in \u2013 and I\u2019m trying to do this on an increasing basis \u2013 and that is, tell the story of what God has done in us, through us, for us.\u00a0 How he\u2019s just blessed us to live in America and have a family like this, and for us to have the freedom that we enjoy \u2013 but also his work in us in some of the tough areas of life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe get real and a little honest with grandchildren as they get a little older, sharing about some of the tough times that Granny and Grandpa have been through, and pass on not just the truth about God, but your experience <em>of<\/em> God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, absolutely.\u00a0 It\u2019s in here \u2013 pass on your spiritual values, pray with them, be a good communicator and listen to what they have to say, because these children are in a world of technology.\u00a0 In fact, one of my rules is you don\u2019t bring your DS and you don\u2019t bring your Nintendos and you don\u2019t bring any of those things to Granny Camp. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, no cell phones by grandkids at Granny\u2019s Camp.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 No. No.\u00a0 They did, about two years ago, and they weren\u2019t communicating with each other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No texting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 No texting.\u00a0 I said, \u201cPut that little machine, whatever it\u2019s called, over there on the table.\u00a0 You can see it, I\u2019m not stealing it.\u00a0 I\u2019m not taking it away.\u00a0 It\u2019s visible, but you are not to touch it.\u00a0 You just leave it there for this week, and we\u2019re going to talk to each other, and we\u2019re going to interact with each other and not with this computer or whatever . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can they check their Facebook before bed or something?\u00a0 I mean . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019re cut off from the world?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 But I do say in here that we as grandparents need to understand that technology so that we can talk their language.\u00a0 We need to know what a . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 . . . DS is and a MS3 \u2013 all those that I don\u2019t have any idea what they are, but we need to at least know and act like we know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was going to ask you what all those things are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 I just hear them talk about it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking that the relative value of giving up your connection to the outside world in exchange for ice cream for dinner.\u00a0 I\u2019m going \u201cThat might be worth it.\u00a0 I might go for that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think that we need to talk to them.\u00a0 I think that we not only need to be good listeners, but we need to talk to them about some of the trends that are out there today, the good ones and the bad ones.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 You get a chance really to put your fingerprints . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 . . . on the hearts of your grandchildren, don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Because we are the ones \u2013 we have the time.\u00a0 Grandparents have more time than their parents do.\u00a0 I look at my children and how pressured they are with all the things of daily living and getting their children here and there and you know, getting food on the table.\u00a0 We were there.\u00a0 We remember.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t have the time to sit and listen and talk and do, which is terrible, but we didn\u2019t.\u00a0 Life was moving.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut life moves even faster today for our children, so we as grandparents have the time to take and talk to our children, to listen to what their needs are. The choices that they are getting ready to make in their life are so important \u2013 who their friends are, where they go, what books they read, what they do \u2013 all those things.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe need to let them know that they have to be careful in all those choices.\u00a0 God gave us the right to choose, but we have to choose what\u2019s good and what is right.\u00a0 This is something that grandparents can spend time talking about, whereas parents just have to keep on keeping on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 You know, I\u2019ve been thinking about how many years you\u2019ve been after this, and I thought about what it takes, Bob, to get a Ph.D.\u00a0 You have to write a thesis when you get a Ph.D. and that\u2019s what you\u2019ve done here.\u00a0 Thirteen years worth of research . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s Camp Director?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me ask you a couple of questions while you\u2019re thinking about that.\u00a0 First of all, have you ever done this in a time that was not summer?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, because they have to be out of school.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s really better. . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve never done spring break or Christmas break?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve tried, but we can\u2019t get all families that have the same spring break.\u00a0 I mean, if schools \u2013 even in the same town they weren\u2019t at the same time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So if somebody is listening and thinking \u201cI think we ought to try doing this,\u201d\u00a0 how much lead time . . .\u00a0 It would not be too out of the question to start thinking even a year in advance, would it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, no.\u00a0 But we do start in about January, and we\u2019ve set the date.\u00a0 Our Granny Camp will be the 20<sup>th<\/sup> of July this year.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to do the 13-year-olds, four of them, by themselves, and then we\u2019re going to do the rest of them, so . . .\u00a0 But the parents have to get to talking together among themselves and pick a time, and I just stay out of that.\u00a0 I just stay out of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m looking at the poll to see what parents think of grandparents breaking a few of the family rules \u2013 you know, not all.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is it okay . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re not talking about an insurrection, but we are talking about maybe candy \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is all about sugar.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about sugar.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It really is sugar.\u00a0 It really is all about sugar, whether the parents think that\u2019s right.\u00a0 We\u2019re also running the same poll with grandparents.\u00a0 If you are grandparents, there\u2019s a to honor their rule of no sugar.\u00a0 To that, Ann Dierks, the author of <em>Granny Camp<\/em> and Camp Director of Granny Camp said, \u201cNo way, Jose.\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cAbsolutely . . .\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And she planted a seed of rebellion in your heart at that moment didn\u2019t rebellion.\u00a0 It\u2019s how to bond with your grandchildren.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s all about right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re coming up on your golden anniversary.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you developed this because your grandchildren ages 8 to18 came to Granny Camp for a number of years until they were about, what, 12,13, something like that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, then their interests changed.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve put together not all the lessons \u2013 but a whole lot of lessons and instruction about this.\u00a0 I have to ask you as we get started:\u00a0 As you look at all the experiences and memories you\u2019ve made as a grandparent, what\u2019s one of your favorite?\u00a0 Because you\u2019ve been doing this how long?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 About 13 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 13 years.\u00a0 So you\u2019ve had a lot of days.\u00a0 You started out doing this for two weeks.\u00a0 You cut it back to ten days, and then you cut it back to two-and-a-half hours.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo, it\u2019s actually \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 A week.\u00a0 It\u2019s a week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You cut it back to a week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s a week.\u00a0 We have done just a day when we couldn\u2019t do anything else, but generally it\u2019s a week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of my most memorable moments was like we said earlier; we had nine granddaughters born in five years.\u00a0 When I started having the first of those nine little girls, seven of them came.\u00a0 They were ages seven to four-and-a-half.\u00a0 None of them had ever been to Granny Camp, had no idea what Granny Camp was.\u00a0 They just knew they were going to Grandmother\u2019s and Granddad\u2019s house.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo my daughter, who has twin daughters, turned to one of her twins and said, \u201cWhat do you want to do at Granny Camp?\u201d\u00a0 Well, they had no idea.\u00a0 I mean, it just wasn\u2019t in their memory bank to know what it was all about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 She looked at her mother and she said, \u201cI want to make someone that\u2019s sad, happy.\u201d\u00a0 When she called and told me this I wiped the tears from my eyes, I put the phone down and I called \u2013 we live in a retirement community where they have a nursing home unit, and it has assisted living, nursing home, Alzheimer\u2019s unit, all of the above \u2013 and I called them and I said, \u201cI have these seven little girls who are all extroverts like their grandmother, and I\u2019m sure they would love to come and do a show at your nursing home.\u00a0 Would you like that?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 A show.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 A show.\u00a0 So \u2013 they didn\u2019t know they were going to do a show.\u00a0 I just decided they were going to do a show.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You didn\u2019t even have a show at that point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter) \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 We didn\u2019t have a show, but I said, \u201cCan we come?\u201d and they said, \u201cYes, we\u2019d love it.\u201d\u00a0 So every year with the very first \u2013 after we go over the rules \u2013 they sit down after they\u2019ve been there about an hour, we go over the rules so we all know where we\u2019re coming from.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen I say, \u201cOkay, what new songs, what new poems, and what new dance have you learned this year at school that you\u2019d like to include in the show?\u201d\u00a0 So we create our show within a matter of hours after they get there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOkay, we\u2019ll begin with singing <em>God Bless America<\/em> and we\u2019ll sing from <em>Sound of Music \u201cDoe a Deer,\u201d <\/em>you know, whatever.\u00a0 We have about ten things that we decide to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, when we come home from the swimming pool one day we practice.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then we practice one evening, and we have what we call \u201cRed, White and Blue Day\u201d and their mother and daddy send them a red, white and blue outfit.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t have to be fancy \u2013 just a red ribbon in their hair and blue pants, or a white shirt, or whatever.\u00a0 So we dress in our red, white and blue and we go to the nursing home and we do a show in all these places.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe night before they make cookies for the residents.\u00a0 We get to do that for the assisted living people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Great idea.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is absolutely wonderful.\u00a0 The patients love these children.\u00a0 One lady that couldn\u2019t come out of her room to come into the general area \u2013 the children went into her room and sang to her.\u00a0 They have pets at the nursing home that just come up and land at the children\u2019s feet and just are part of the show.\u00a0 It is just a wonderful thing that we do every year.\u00a0 So it came out of one little four-and-a-half year old, because she wanted to make somebody happy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Amazing.\u00a0 You know, I could see Bob, because Bob is very musically talented \u2013 I could see Grandpa Bob\u2019s \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 And see, it doesn\u2019t have to be fancy.\u00a0 I mean, they sang <em>Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star<\/em> the first time \u2013 you know, all the little songs that kids sing.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t have to be wonderful.\u00a0 And they got their feet crossed and they\u2019re doing \u2013 you know, they stand in a line and do whatever.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I have to ask you a technical question at this point, because you mentioned earlier your grandchildren are in four states.\u00a0 So are ours.\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 That is always a huge logistical challenge, because none of them live here where we live, and so getting them Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How do you get them here?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, there\u2019s a chapter in my book about how to begin, and that is one of the big things that we talk about.\u00a0 You need to get your children started talking about it in about January \u2013 to say what their schedules are, if they know their summer schedule, when all families have a week when they\u2019re available, and then they start talking about how they\u2019re going to get them there.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just made plane reservations for the Tampa group night before last, and they\u2019re going to fly in, and another son in Dallas is going to pick one part of them up on one day, and my daughter\u2019s driving in from Colorado, I mean, it\u2019s a lot of doing \u2013 and another one\u2019s flying in from Kansas City, and we\u2019re going to pick them up, and then \u2013 I let the children work it out.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you help with the tickets?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I do sometimes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\u00a0 And if a child isn\u2019t able to come for who knows what reason, as a grandparent you don\u2019t take it personally.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, no.\u00a0 But I\u2019ve never had one not come.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There you go.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Their parents want them to come, and they want to come, so we don\u2019t have a problem not getting them there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let me ask you about that.\u00a0 What are mom and dad doing while the kids are at Grandparents Camp?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t ask. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey have a honeymoon week and they love it, so I don\u2019t ask what they do.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You just take over the childcare and let mom and dad do whatever . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 They just do whatever they want to do.\u00a0 They just can\u2019t come to camp.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want them.\u00a0 It\u2019s too many bosses.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And again, what is the earliest they can come?\u00a0 What age?\u00a0 Three?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I had them at three.\u00a0 My book says they have to be potty trained, and they definitely need to do that.\u00a0\u00a0 So it\u2019s an incentive for the parents to get their children potty trained, so they can come to Granny Camp.\u00a0 It\u2019s incentive for the parents, but really four-and-a-half to five is really the ideal age to start having them come for a week.\u00a0 You know, they don\u2019t want to stay away from home when they are really little, not more than a couple of days.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Some of the older kids have wound up becoming counselors at Granny Camp?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, and it\u2019s wonderful training, and I think probably they could get credit in their school for community service or whatever they call it, to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, I thought you were going to say \u201cminimum wage.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, they certainly get minimum wage.\u00a0 It is zero.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is good training that they get.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What do you have the counselors do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, they help with everything that grandmother needs done.\u00a0 When I had the three it was okay, but when I invited these seven little girls, I had a boss from where I work who had a fourteen-year-old daughter.\u00a0 I said, \u201cDo you think your daughter would like to come and be a counselor and bring a good friend?\u201d so they had each other.\u00a0 And so they did and it was wonderful.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey watch the children while you\u2019re getting ready for a picnic, or they watch the children while you\u2019re getting ready for dinner, or you know, you need them to help brush their hair in the morning, or help roll up the bedrolls and straighten up the room so you can use the room to dance in, or whatever you have to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou just call them when you need them, and then they get to be campers, too.\u00a0 They have fun.\u00a0 They get to go swimming, they get to go to the beach, they get to do crafts.\u00a0 They do all those things, but boy, when you need them you call them and they come.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 And then as those nine little girls grew up, then the two older ones for the last two or maybe three years have been my counselors.\u00a0 They are campers, but when dinner\u2019s coming, \u201cMeredith, Michelle, come here.\u00a0 You need to help me put dinner on.\u201d\u00a0 And they\u2019re just right there to help.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You mentioned bedrolls and I was wondering, because at one point you had eleven cousins all . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, all at once.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 . . . at the same house.\u00a0 Was this just sleeping bags all over the place?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 It\u2019s always been just bedrolls.\u00a0 We don\u2019t make beds.\u00a0 We make that really simple \u2013 that morning process.\u00a0\u00a0 When they get up they roll up their bedroll, they put their pajamas in their pillow, and we stack them all in one place out of the way so they\u2019re out of the way for the day, and then we just roll them out at night and put them out.\u00a0 I have a couch that makes into a bed, and I have a trundle bed, or we have blow-up mattresses, and we just line the room . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did Grandpa ever check into a hotel during Granny Camp?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, he really hasn\u2019t.\u00a0 He\u2019s very patient.\u00a0 He\u2019s a quiet, gentle man, and he\u2019s very patient with all of this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He paid for his own flight. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe paid for his own flight.\u00a0 You know, we\u2019ve been talking a lot here about being a grandmother and a grandfather, and I like what you have here.\u00a0 You have a chapter on \u201cWhat is a Granny?\u201d\u00a0 What is a grandmother?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust comment on that, because I think we all assume in this culture that everybody understands, but I think because of the disintegration of the family across the country I think there are a lot of families that don\u2019t experience grannies or grandpas much anymore.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think our main job is to pass on love from us to the children.\u00a0 I mean, that\u2019s the main thing Granny Camp is about \u2013 it\u2019s about love.\u00a0 But it\u2019s also to pass on your traditions that you\u2019ve grown up with that are special to you: your faith, your love of family, your dedication to work, your work ethic, the things that are important to you.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis is a way to do it, especially when you live thousands of miles away from each other.\u00a0 But it\u2019s a time \u2013 and you know it\u2019s kind of I guess the last job that God has given us to do, and so we have to do it well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBeing a part of grandchildren\u2019s lives is another dimension that I didn\u2019t have, and my husband didn\u2019t have, and we just felt that it was so important that our grandchildren knew that older generation.\u00a0 I think that our generation has values that are no longer around today.\u00a0 They are in some places, but they are not as prevalent as they were when we grew up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen some of those bumper stickers on-- maybe it\u2019s RVs or trailers-- that say, \u201cI\u2019m spending my children\u2019s inheritance.\u201d\u00a0 On one hand, it\u2019s cute, and on another hand it\u2019s like, \u201cI just wonder if the lives of those people that put a bumper sticker that kind of declares that to the world \u2013 if they really are attempting to build into the lives of their grandchildren.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI really like where you went, where you started: love.\u00a0 The whole concept of a relationship \u2013 it\u2019s the great commandment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Love God and love others as you love yourself.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019d add a couple more to your list, which I thought was excellent.\u00a0 I\u2019d say one thing grandparents ought to be doing is passing on the truth from the Bible that is most meaningful to them . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 . . . and just finding creative ways to pass that truth on.\u00a0 Then a second thing I\u2019d say grandparents ought to be involved in \u2013 and I\u2019m trying to do this on an increasing basis \u2013 and that is, tell the story of what God has done in us, through us, for us.\u00a0 How he\u2019s just blessed us to live in America and have a family like this, and for us to have the freedom that we enjoy \u2013 but also his work in us in some of the tough areas of life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe get real and a little honest with grandchildren as they get a little older, sharing about some of the tough times that Granny and Grandpa have been through, and pass on not just the truth about God, but your experience <em>of<\/em> God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, absolutely.\u00a0 It\u2019s in here \u2013 pass on your spiritual values, pray with them, be a good communicator and listen to what they have to say, because these children are in a world of technology.\u00a0 In fact, one of my rules is you don\u2019t bring your DS and you don\u2019t bring your Nintendos and you don\u2019t bring any of those things to Granny Camp. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, no cell phones by grandkids at Granny\u2019s Camp.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 No. No.\u00a0 They did, about two years ago, and they weren\u2019t communicating with each other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No texting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 No texting.\u00a0 I said, \u201cPut that little machine, whatever it\u2019s called, over there on the table.\u00a0 You can see it, I\u2019m not stealing it.\u00a0 I\u2019m not taking it away.\u00a0 It\u2019s visible, but you are not to touch it.\u00a0 You just leave it there for this week, and we\u2019re going to talk to each other, and we\u2019re going to interact with each other and not with this computer or whatever . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can they check their Facebook before bed or something?\u00a0 I mean . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They\u2019re cut off from the world?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 But I do say in here that we as grandparents need to understand that technology so that we can talk their language.\u00a0 We need to know what a . . DS is and a MS3 \u2013 all those that I don\u2019t have any idea what they are, but we need to at least know and act like we know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was going to ask you what all those things are.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 I just hear them talk about it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking that the relative value of giving up your connection to the outside world in exchange for ice cream for dinner.\u00a0 I\u2019m going \u201cThat might be worth it.\u00a0 I might go for that.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think that we need to talk to them.\u00a0 I think that we not only need to be good listeners, but we need to talk to them about some of the trends that are out there today, the good ones and the bad ones.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 You get a chance really to put your fingerprints . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 . . . on the hearts of your grandchildren, don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\u00a0 Because we are the ones \u2013 we have the time.\u00a0 Grandparents have more time than their parents do.\u00a0 I look at my children and how pressured they are with all the things of daily living and getting their children here and there and you know, getting food on the table.\u00a0 We were there.\u00a0 We remember.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t have the time to sit and listen and talk and do, which is terrible, but we didn\u2019t.\u00a0 Life was moving.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut life moves even faster today for our children, so we as grandparents have the time to take and talk to our children, to listen to what their needs are. The choices that they are getting ready to make in their life are so important \u2013 who their friends are, where they go, what books they read, what they do \u2013 all those things.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe need to let them know that they have to be careful in all those choices.\u00a0 God gave us the right to choose, but we have to choose what\u2019s good and what is right.\u00a0 This is something that grandparents can spend time talking about, whereas parents just have to keep on keeping on.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 You know, I\u2019ve been thinking about how many years you\u2019ve been after this, and I thought about what it takes, Bob, to get a Ph.D.\u00a0 You have to write a thesis when you get a Ph.D. and that\u2019s what you\u2019ve done here.\u00a0 Thirteen years worth of research . . .\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s \u2013 even in the same town they weren\u2019t at the same time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So if somebody is listening and thinking \u201cI think we ought to try doing this,\u201d\u00a0 how much lead time . . .\u00a0 It would not be too out of the question to start thinking even a year in advance, would it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, no.\u00a0 But we do start in about January, and we\u2019ve set the date.\u00a0 Our Granny Camp will be the 20<sup>th<\/sup> of July this year.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to do the 13-year-olds, four of them, by themselves, and then we\u2019re going to do the rest of them, so . . .\u00a0 But the parents have to get to talking together among themselves and pick a time, and I just stay out of that.\u00a0 I just stay out of it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I\u2019m looking at the
