always tell when I just need to get up, leave, get out of here.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No longer, Bob.\u00a0 No longer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What do you mean, \u201cno longer?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you\u2019re a grandparent now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m a grandparent but I\u2019ve got you and a feisty granny in the studio\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 With fourteen of them\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I\u2019m just saying, \u201cI\u2019m done, it\u2019s all yours!\u00a0 See you later!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This broadcast is for grandparents, obviously, but it\u2019s also for all the parents who are listening who have moms and dads, their moms and dads, who maybe just don\u2019t know how to engage the grandchildren.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So what you\u2019re saying is you can inspire your mom and dad to get on board with this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know, quite honestly, if you think about the concept of becoming a grandparent, when your children have their children, there are no instruction manuals that are passed out to grandparents when that happens.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So I\u2019m just recommending that now, in birthing rooms all around the nation, this book, called <u>Granny Camp,<\/u> be passed out so that the parents can pass it on to the grandmothers and grandfathers of their grandchildren.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You want to explain Granny Camp for our listeners?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do and I\u2019m going to introduce the camp director of Granny Camp who also wrote the book by the same title.\u00a0 She is the proud grandmother of fourteen and she\u2019s been married to her husband for almost fifty years.\u00a0 They have four children, all of whom are married.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnn Dierks joins us on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Ann, welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you for having me.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to be fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is kind of fun and you don\u2019t know this.\u00a0 But I\u2019m about to get in a car in a couple of hours and I\u2019m heading out to go have some time with my grandchildren.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I approve!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just a few of the sixteen grandchildren.\u00a0 Only three.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Only three?\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t make any difference how many.\u00a0 As long as you\u2019re with them and you give them all that love.\u00a0 That\u2019s what\u2019s special.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell us where you got the idea for Granny Camp.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 My grandchildren all lived in different places.\u00a0 They live in four different states.\u00a0 I wanted them to know me, to know my husband, for us to know them, and for them to know their cousins.\u00a0 It was a way to do it.\u00a0 Bring them together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo parents!\u00a0 Parents are not allowed at Granny Camp!\u00a0 So we get that special one on one time with them to pass on our family traditions, the things that we want them to know about us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now when you first started this, how many grandchildren did you have and what ages where they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 We had three grandchildren. T hey were a year apart and they were five, four, and three years old.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So basically you were saying \u201cbring the kids, we\u2019ll watch them for a while.\u201d\u00a0 Or did you have this outlined?\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re going to do this on this day and this on this day?\u201d\u00a0 Did you have it all planned out or was it just kind of made up as you went along.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I had it sort of planned out.\u00a0 I just had a piece of paper in my kitchen and I wrote down what we might have for lunch and breakfast and let\u2019s go to the pool today and let\u2019s do that kind of thing.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t quite as organized as it has gotten to be.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I invited the beginning of the nine girls and there were seven of them and they were aged seven to four and a half, that was 2003, I thought \u201cYou know, I really need to get organized!\u201d\u00a0 You can\u2019t have seven little children standing by your side saying \u201cWhat are we having for lunch?\u201d and you saying \u201clet\u2019s see.\u00a0 I\u2019ll look in my refrigerator and see what we might have.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo, you need to know that today we\u2019re having peanut butter and jelly and tomorrow we\u2019re having grilled cheese.\u00a0 And at ten o\u2019clock we\u2019re going to the beach and at nine o\u2019clock we\u2019re doing crafts and at three o\u2019clock we\u2019re going to do Christian videos.\u00a0 So I had a schedule.\u00a0 I abide by it to this day.\u00a0 I fill it out before they get there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow you have to be flexible!\u00a0 The days you\u2019re going to the beach or the swimming pool it rains so you\u2019ve got to figure out something else to do.\u00a0 But pretty much you follow that so that you don\u2019t\u2019 have to stand there and wait.\u00a0 And they don\u2019t have to wait. They don\u2019t want to wait!\u00a0 \u201cWhat are we doing next, Grandmother?\u201d\u00a0 You just need to know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now I want you to know, Ann, listening to your schedule, Barbara and I understand that!\u00a0 We have a cousins\u2019 camp.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t nearly as ambitious as you had.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was just a day, wasn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was a day.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sissy!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughing)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s okay, you can do that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can you believe\u2026 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughing)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just calling it like I see it.\u00a0 You\u2019re a sissy!\u00a0 You can only take a day!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 No he\u2019s not.\u00a0 At least he did it.\u00a0 Some grandparents don\u2019t do it at all!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you, Ann.\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 A little respect there from the guest!\u00a0 But not from the co-host!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughing)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOh, what a guy!\u00a0 But anyway, Barbara and I laid out the schedule.\u00a0 And I\u2019m going to tell you something.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t know where you\u2019re going, all the children will take you there!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right!\u00a0 It could be what you call chaos.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is chaos, even with a schedule, okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But it was a lot of fun.\u00a0 We had, what do you call it?\u00a0 Tempura paint.\u00a0 We had a concrete floor in a garage and tables all set up with each child having their own big piece of paper.\u00a0 They could just glum their hands into that thing.\u00a0 And you know what?\u00a0 Their parents weren\u2019t anywhere around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, you don\u2019t want the parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It didn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 It was the coolest thing.\u00a0 It was always what I wanted to do with my kids but because they were mine, we could never let them do that, you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 We do finger painting only we paint each other when it\u2019s all over and then we hose each other off!\u00a0 We do it in our bathing suits!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m adding that to our repertoire\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Whooo!\u00a0 It\u2019s fun!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2026 next time we do it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want to know.\u00a0 What is the difference between Granny Camp and just going and spending a couple of weeks at granny\u2019s house?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, it\u2019s not the same.\u00a0 Granny Camp is an organized time that you are focused on just your grandchildren.\u00a0 No parents are involved and you do some special things.\u00a0 Now my Granny Camp is basically things that we do that are free.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s time to be together.\u00a0 That\u2019s the whole point of it.\u00a0 It\u2019s family.\u00a0 It\u2019s grandparents.\u00a0 It\u2019s cousins.\u00a0 You don\u2019t have to take them to Six Flags and you don\u2019t have to take them to all the fancy places and spend a lot for money on them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You told me that you did this once. You did take the kids to the amusement park and it was an okay day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh yes, they had a grand time but I spent a lot of money and that\u2019s not what Granny Camp\u2019s about.\u00a0 It\u2019s not about spending money on your grandchildren.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now I want to say a word about that.\u00a0 When we did our cousins camp we had the coloring books, we had the books that we were reading, we had balloons, we had the finger paints\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that costs money.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It does so you have to make a little investment.\u00a0 But compared to Disneyworld or Sea World or the big amusement parks we\u2019re just talking about a small amount of money by comparison.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 We catch bugs.\u00a0 We play games and we watch videos sometimes when it\u2019s hot.\u00a0 In the middle of the afternoons is the only time I let them turn on the television.\u00a0 That\u2019s not what it\u2019s about either.\u00a0 But it does cost.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe do a lot of crafts.\u00a0 You mentioned your garage.\u00a0 I set up a huge table in the garage with glitter and paint and glue and beads.\u00a0 You name it.\u00a0 Paint brushes and all that stuff.\u00a0 And they love to create.\u00a0 And so you buy kits of things that they can do, birdhouses and frames and bracelets they can make.\u00a0 So you do have some expense.\u00a0 But it\u2019s not like going to preplanned places and spending a lot of money.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s spending time with each other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you have to be ready for the mess they that will create.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t a problem for us.\u00a0 We just sold the house after cousins\u2019 camp.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What\u2019s the most you\u2019ve had a Granny Camp at any one time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Eleven, for a week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And where did the eleven\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hold it.\u00a0 How many employees do you have?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Only Granddad!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughing)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd for the first ten years I did Granny Camp.\u00a0 Granddad was working and he wasn\u2019t there.\u00a0 It was just Grandmother.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was going to ask you, because I hadn\u2019t heard a word about Granddad in this deal!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, now Granddad is an integral part of camp because he does Granddad\u2019s G\u2019s.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I can\u2019t believe that he didn\u2019t\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wait.\u00a0 Granddad\u2019s G\u2019s?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well Granddad is a geologist by degree and he\u2019s a genealogist by choice.\u00a0 And so we started with the geology because we live out in the woods and he went out\u2026. It\u2019s not rocks, they\u2019re minerals, you know, they really are minerals.\u00a0 So he went out and explained those things to them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHis family was in the lumber business for many years and so he goes into the woods and he explains about trees.\u00a0 He has little trees and bigger trees and then he cuts a slice of a huge tree and he shows them the rings and all about that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo Granddad\u2019s G\u2019s was teaching about geology and genealogy and then it grew into God and gospel and government and good virtues.\u00a0 And it\u2019s all the g\u2019s.\u00a0 And he gathers them around at his feet and he gets out his white board if he has to draw a picture and he gets out his globe with the genealogy.\u00a0 And he says \u201cwell, our ancestors came from Germany. Where is Germany?\u00a0 Someone show me Germany on the map.\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s the teaching tool.\u00a0 So Granddad is very much a part of camp.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You get a little break these days that you didn\u2019t have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 He does that while I\u2019m fixing dinner or getting ready for a picnic or doing something.\u00a0 I say \u201cGo do a \u201cg\u201d\u201d and so he just picks a \u201cg\u201d and does it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And for your Granny Camp you\u2019ve undoubtedly kind of perfected.\u00a0 What is the length of time that you should host Granny Camp.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that is?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It can be a day.\u00a0 It can be two days.\u00a0 You can have a day of Granny Camp and do character day.\u00a0 If you have all boys do Batman and Robin.\u00a0 Or if you have all girls do Cinderella Day.\u00a0 Or you can do one day.\u00a0 I had had major surgery and couldn\u2019t do Granny Camp. We went to Florida, rented a condo, and I said \u201ccan I have your children for a day?\u201d\u00a0 I said \u201cwe\u2019re going to have mini Granny Camp.\u201d\u00a0 They came to my condo. They all loved purple.\u00a0 I\u2019m not a purple fan but they love purple. So we had \u201cPurple Day.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, what is Purple Day?\u00a0 Like I say, I wish I\u2019d been a kindergarten teacher.\u00a0 But we colored with purple crayons, we played with purple play dough, we had purple grapes and purple jelly on our peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.\u00a0 We sang \u201cOne Eyed, One- Horned Flying Purple People Eater\u201d and we just did purple things all day long!\u00a0 So it was Purple Day.\u00a0 It\u2019s doesn\u2019t have to be fancy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So it can be a day but how long can it go before you say alright, this has got to stop.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 A day!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, you\u2019ve gone two weeks with Granny Camp? Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, it\u2019s only a week now. In the beginning, when the first three came, I did it for two weeks and then the next year I did it ten days and then I thought a week is enough.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what I was looking for!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 The more you have.\u00a0 They can only stand each other for so long.\u00a0 And they\u2019re nice for about a week to each other.\u00a0 They really all get along.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They really are nice for a week, though?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, let me tell you\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is that a guarantee?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because Grandmother has rules and the rules are in the book, the <u>Granny Camp<\/u> book.\u00a0 I have the rules.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let\u2019s talk about those because I was not prepared for the new role I would have with my grandchildren and one of the areas is around rules.\u00a0 Talk to me about rules for a moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well there are some wonderful rules, some very specific rules.\u00a0 I mean, there\u2019s general rules like we don\u2019t run in the house and we don\u2019t jump on the beds and we don\u2019t jump on each other.\u00a0 We don\u2019t wear high heels--we do a lot of dress up for the little girls--we don\u2019t wear high heels on the stairs.\u00a0 You know, things like that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Golden Rule is the main rule that we abide by at camp.\u00a0 So I lay out all those.\u00a0 We have the toilet paper rule.\u00a0 Can I talk about that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 We had to take, the first year that we had the seven little girls, the second day that we were there, we had to take the whole toilet off of its base, off of the floor, because it got stopped up with toilet paper.\u00a0 I mean it\u2019s little girls.\u00a0 What do you do?\u00a0 So we instigated the four square rule.\u00a0 It\u2019s just four squares.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So\u2026rationing!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rationing, yes!\u00a0 Grandmother does rationing.\u00a0 And then there\u2019s telephone rule.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Parents can\u2019t call their grandchildren at Granny Camp especially when they are little.\u00a0 We had an incident that first year with a five year old.\u00a0 Her mother called about two nights before camp was over and said \u201cI\u2019ve just got to talk with her\u201d and I said \u201cwell, alright, I don\u2019t want you to, but alright.\u201d\u00a0 So I let her talk to her daughter.\u00a0 I put all seven in the shower and I let them scrub each other\u2019s backs.\u00a0 They\u2019re seven to four years old and they all get in this big glass shower and they scrub the walls\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I get the picture!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I got one out and I said \u201ccome here, come here.\u201d\u00a0 So I told her who it was and go off and talk to her.\u00a0 She talked to her mother and I said \u201cnow don\u2019t tell any of the other children that you\u2019ve talked to your mother.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alright.\u00a0 So we got ready for bed, we said our prayers, and about thirty minutes later, here she comes.\u00a0 Sobbing.\u00a0 I said \u201cwhat is the matter?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI want to go home and see my mother.\u201d\u00a0 Well, in about ten more minutes all seven of them were crying and all of them were ready to go home.\u00a0 I said, \u201cSee, that\u2019s why we don\u2019t talk to parents.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnce they talk to their parents they want to go home.\u00a0 Prior to that, they hadn\u2019t even thought of their parents.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t an issue.\u00a0 So no telephone calls.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now you said \u201ctucked into bed.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No wait.\u00a0 Before you move off of rules, I want to talk about the rules for one more second.\u00a0 We\u2019re about to go and babysit some of our grandchildren.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to keep the number anonymous so the FBI can\u2019t figure out who it is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But fewer than ten, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Fewer than ten.\u00a0 One of the rules we had foisted upon us was no sugar.\u00a0 No sugar.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh dear.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And he said \u201cPoppa\u2014that\u2019s my name\u2014Poppa, you cannot bring sugar as treats for the kids.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of them had a bunch of cavities, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, they said that they\u2019d been to the dentist and it was really, really bad news and that I couldn\u2019t have my gummy bear invasion.\u00a0 There\u2019s always a gummy bear invasion with any of my grandkids, anytime.\u00a0 It\u2019s just astounding how it happens.\u00a0 I don\u2019t understand it really.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know.\u00a0 I understand.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2026But they\u2019re all over the yard.\u00a0 Kids go pick them up and they get sick on them for days.\u00a0 It\u2019s fun!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughing)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s wonderful!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It really is a blast.\u00a0 So I wrote my son back.\u00a0 Uh oh.\u00a0 I\u2019ve let out that amount of information.\u00a0 I wrote my son back and I said \u201cOh, this is totally unfair.\u00a0 I cannot believe you\u2019re asking me to come over there for this three day babysitting adventure, which is now going to be turned into a mini non-sissy cousins\u2019 camp.\u00a0 I am going to host this baby, alright?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Anyway, so he says \u201cno sugar.\u201d\u00a0 So I say, \u201cSon.\u00a0 This is all about tradition.\u00a0 What am I going to do?\u00a0 Have them run out in the yard and look for broccoli and brussel sprouts?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 And be excited about it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Asparagus?\u00a0 I mean, sure, the kids are really going to get into that.\u00a0 So we\u2019re in a little bit of arm wrestling.\u00a0 But seriously\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So are you going to take sugar?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 No, I\u2019m going to honor the request.\u00a0 Isn\u2019t that the right thing to do?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I really have to question that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughing)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re really throwing gasoline on a fire, right here.\u00a0 You just had a punch of parents roll their eyes and say, \u201dThis is the kind of grandmother\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 But that\u2019s what it is.\u00a0 It\u2019s a grandmother and grandmother gets to do whatever grandmother wants to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re just pouring gasoline on a fire.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to get phone calls, not only from my children, but from listeners all over the country saying \u201cCan you believe Ann Dierk\u2019s Granny Camp? \u201c\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you know what I did on top of that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m afraid to ask.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, after this little story, I\u2019ll tell you what I did about two years ago.\u00a0 I gave them their dinner.\u00a0 Usually I serve up their plates.\u00a0 We have children\u2019s food.\u00a0 I send them a list before they come to camp.\u00a0 Tell me what you like for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, things that your mother won\u2019t let you have but your grandmother will let you have.\u00a0 I get a list\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You actually bait them!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I get all that back so that I have a list of all those things.\u00a0 So we eat children food.\u00a0 We eat macaroni and cheese and, you know, all those things that children like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Nutritious.\u00a0 Very nutritious.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I told them it\u2019s not nutrition camp.\u00a0 Don\u2019t\u2019 plan on it.\u00a0 It\u2019s not.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Major food groups.\u00a0 Chocolates.\u00a0 Ice Cream.\u00a0 Cotton candy\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wait a minute.\u00a0 Now let me finish my story.\u00a0 So then I usually serve up their plates.\u00a0 This night I didn\u2019t.\u00a0 I just gave them a bowl of fruit and put them out on the deck and said \u201cEat your fruit and dinner\u2019s coming.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 On the deck.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we have a deck on the back of our house.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\u00a0 You can hose it down.\u00a0 I understand.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, it\u2019s wonderful.\u00a0 Absolutely!\u00a0 I eat out there as often as we can.\u00a0 So I give them their fruit, they eat all their fruit and they\u2019re sitting there, just waiting.\u00a0 I said \u201cOkay kids, we\u2019re having dessert for dinner!\u201d\u00a0 And all we had was ice cream and cake and sprinkles and things to put on the ice cream and that\u2019s all we had for dinner.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Shhhhh\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s to pass them on to his kids when he dies, or MaryAnn who wanted to buy the expensive fifty-pack of straws for a dollar.\u00a0 Fifty straws for a dollar!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Two cents apiece!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 For a dollar!\u00a0 I got five thousand straws for ten bucks!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I forget.\u00a0 How did the poll come out?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I forget.\u00a0 It was like fifty\/fifty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, so here is going to be the poll.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to give people a highly sophisticated poll.\u00a0 If you\u2019re a parent, you check one box and that takes you to a poll that has yes or no, Granny or Grandpa can set their own rules and can even break a few rules\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you want parents to vote whether grandparents should have that freedom\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2026and we want grandparents to vote we\u2019ve laughed and had a good time today. Being a grandparent is really an assignment from God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is a privilege.\u00a0 It is really a high and holy privilege and the question is, as a grandparent, what are you doing to impact your legacy?\u00a0 How are you going to shape\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ttheir conscience, their souls, their personalities, their ability to relate to people, their breadth of knowledge?\u00a0 What do you have that you would like to pass on?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe it\u2019s about trees and rocks, like Ann\u2019s husband is doing.\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s a Bible verse.\u00a0 But the point is, begin to connect relationally with your grandchildren and tread carefully on these rules that Ann told you to break!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughing)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause I\u2019m not sure the parents are going to appreciate her stance on this topic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you may think \u201cI\u2019m just not wired the way Ann is wired.\u00a0 I\u2019m not a kindergarten teacher wanna-be.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what the book is for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you know, quite honestly, if you think about the concept of becoming a grandparent, when your children have their children, there are no instruction manuals that are passed out to grandparents when that happens.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So I\u2019m just recommending that now, in birthing rooms all around the nation, this book, called <u>Granny Camp,<\/u> be passed out so that the parents can pass it on to the grandmothers and grandfathers of their grandchildren.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You want to explain Granny Camp for our listeners?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do and I\u2019m going to introduce the camp director of Granny Camp who also wrote the book by the same title.\u00a0 She is the proud grandmother of fourteen and she\u2019s been married to her husband for almost fifty years.\u00a0 They have four children, all of whom are married.\u00a0 having me.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to be fun.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is kind of fun and you don\u2019t know this.\u00a0 But I\u2019m about to get in a car in a couple of hours and I\u2019m heading out to go have some time with my grandchildren.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I approve!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just a few of the sixteen grandchildren.\u00a0 Only three.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Only three?\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t make any difference how many.\u00a0 As long as you\u2019re with them and you give them all that love.\u00a0 That\u2019s what\u2019s special.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Tell us where you got the idea for Granny Camp.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 My grandchildren all lived in different places.\u00a0 They live in four different states.\u00a0 I wanted them to know me, to know my husband, for us to know them, and for them to know their cousins.\u00a0 It was a way to do it.\u00a0 Bring them together.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo parents!\u00a0 Parents are not allowed at Granny Camp!\u00a0 So we get that special one on one time with them to pass on our family traditions, the things that we want them to know about us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now when you first started this, how many grandchildren did you have and what ages where they?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 We had three grandchildren. T hey were a year apart and they were five, four, and three years old.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So basically you were saying \u201cbring the kids, we\u2019ll watch them for a while.\u201d\u00a0 Or did you have this outlined?\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re going to do this on this day and this on this day?\u201d\u00a0 Did you have it all planned out or was it just kind of made up as you went along.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I had it sort of planned out.\u00a0 I just had a piece of paper in my kitchen and I wrote down what we might have for lunch and breakfast and let\u2019s go to the pool today and let\u2019s do that kind of thing.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t quite as organized as it has gotten to be.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I invited the beginning of the nine girls and there were seven of them and they were aged seven to four and a half, that was 2003, I thought \u201cYou know, I really need to get organized!\u201d\u00a0 You can\u2019t have seven little children standing by your side saying \u201cWhat are we having for lunch?\u201d and you saying \u201clet\u2019s see.\u00a0 I\u2019ll look in my refrigerator and see what we might have.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNo, you need to know that today we\u2019re having peanut butter and jelly and tomorrow we\u2019re having grilled cheese.\u00a0 And at ten o\u2019clock we\u2019re going to the beach and at nine o\u2019clock we\u2019re doing crafts and at three o\u2019clock we\u2019re going to do Christian videos.\u00a0 So I had a schedule.\u00a0 I abide by it to this day.\u00a0 I fill it out before they get there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow you have to be flexible!\u00a0 The days you\u2019re going to the beach or the swimming pool it rains so you\u2019ve got to figure out something else to do.\u00a0 But pretty much you follow that so that you don\u2019t\u2019 have to stand there and wait.\u00a0 And they don\u2019t have to wait. They don\u2019t want to wait!\u00a0 \u201cWhat are we doing next, Grandmother?\u201d\u00a0 You just need to know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now I want you to know, Ann, listening to your schedule, Barbara and I understand that!\u00a0 We have a cousins\u2019 camp.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t nearly as ambitious as you had.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was just a day, wasn\u2019t it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was a day.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sissy!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughing)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s okay, you can do that!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can you believe\u2026 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughing)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just calling it like I see it.\u00a0 You\u2019re a sissy!\u00a0 You can only take a day!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 No he\u2019s not.\u00a0 At least he did it.\u00a0 Some grandparents don\u2019t do it at all!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you, Ann.\u00a0 Thank you.\u00a0 A little respect there from the guest!\u00a0 But not from the co-host!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughing)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOh, what a guy!\u00a0 But anyway, Barbara and I laid out the schedule.\u00a0 And I\u2019m going to tell you something.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t know where you\u2019re going, all the children will take you there!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right!\u00a0 It could be what you call chaos.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is chaos, even with a schedule, okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But it was a lot of fun.\u00a0 We had, what do you call it?\u00a0 Tempura paint.\u00a0 We had a concrete floor in a garage and tables all set up with each child having their own big piece of paper.\u00a0 They could just glum their hands into that thing.\u00a0 And you know what?\u00a0 Their parents weren\u2019t anywhere around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, you don\u2019t want the parents.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It didn\u2019t matter.\u00a0 It was the coolest thing.\u00a0 It was always what I wanted to do with my kids but because they were mine, we could never let them do that, you know?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 We do finger painting only we paint each other when it\u2019s all over and then we hose each other off!\u00a0 We do it in our bathing suits!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m adding that to our repertoire\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Whooo!\u00a0 It\u2019s fun!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2026 next time we do it!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want to know.\u00a0 What is the difference between Granny Camp and just going and spending a couple of weeks at granny\u2019s house?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, it\u2019s not the same.\u00a0 Granny Camp is an organized time that you are focused on just your grandchildren.\u00a0 No parents are involved and you do some special things.\u00a0 Now my Granny Camp is basically things that we do that are free.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt\u2019s time to be together.\u00a0 That\u2019s the whole point of it.\u00a0 It\u2019s family.\u00a0 It\u2019s grandparents.\u00a0 It\u2019s cousins.\u00a0 You don\u2019t have to take them to Six Flags and you don\u2019t have to take them to all the fancy places and spend a lot for money on them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You told me that you did this once. You did take the kids to the amusement park and it was an okay day.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh yes, they had a grand time but I spent a lot of money and that\u2019s not what Granny Camp\u2019s about.\u00a0 It\u2019s not about spending money on your grandchildren.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now I want to say a word about that.\u00a0 When we did our cousins camp we had the coloring books, we had the books that we were reading, we had balloons, we had the finger paints\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that costs money.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It does so you have to make a little investment.\u00a0 But compared to Disneyworld or Sea World or the big amusement parks we\u2019re just talking about a small amount of money by comparison.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 We catch bugs.\u00a0 We play games and we watch videos sometimes when it\u2019s hot.\u00a0 In the middle of the afternoons is the only time I let them turn on the television.\u00a0 That\u2019s not what it\u2019s about either.\u00a0 But it does cost.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe do a lot of crafts.\u00a0 You mentioned your garage.\u00a0 I set up a huge table in the garage with glitter and paint and glue and beads.\u00a0 You name it.\u00a0 Paint brushes and all that stuff.\u00a0 And they love to create.\u00a0 And so you buy kits of things that they can do, birdhouses and frames and bracelets they can make.\u00a0 So you do have some expense.\u00a0 But it\u2019s not like going to preplanned places and spending a lot of money.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s spending time with each other.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you have to be ready for the mess they that will create.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t a problem for us.\u00a0 We just sold the house after cousins\u2019 camp.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What\u2019s the most you\u2019ve had a Granny Camp at any one time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Eleven, for a week.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And where did the eleven\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hold it.\u00a0 How many employees do you have?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Only Granddad!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughing)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd for the first ten years I did Granny Camp.\u00a0 Granddad was working and he wasn\u2019t there.\u00a0 It was just Grandmother.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was going to ask you, because I hadn\u2019t heard a word about Granddad in this deal!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, now Granddad is an integral part of camp because he does Granddad\u2019s G\u2019s.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I can\u2019t believe that he didn\u2019t\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wait.\u00a0 Granddad\u2019s G\u2019s?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well Granddad is a geologist by degree and he\u2019s a genealogist by choice.\u00a0 And so we started with the geology because we live out in the woods and he went out\u2026. It\u2019s not rocks, they\u2019re minerals, you know, they really are minerals.\u00a0 So he went out and explained those things to them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHis family was in the lumber business for many years and so he goes into the woods and he explains about trees.\u00a0 He has little trees and bigger trees and then he cuts a slice of a huge tree and he shows them the rings and all about that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo Granddad\u2019s G\u2019s was teaching about geology and genealogy and then it grew into God and gospel and government and good virtues.\u00a0 And it\u2019s all the g\u2019s.\u00a0 And he gathers them around at his feet and he gets out his white board if he has to draw a picture and he gets out his globe with the genealogy.\u00a0 And he says \u201cwell, our ancestors came from Germany. Where is Germany?\u00a0 Someone show me Germany on the map.\u201d\u00a0 He\u2019s the teaching tool.\u00a0 So Granddad is very much a part of camp.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You get a little break these days that you didn\u2019t have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 He does that while I\u2019m fixing dinner or getting ready for a picnic or doing something.\u00a0 I say \u201cGo do a \u201cg\u201d\u201d and so he just picks a \u201cg\u201d and does it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And for your Granny Camp you\u2019ve undoubtedly kind of perfected.\u00a0 What is the length of time that you should host Granny Camp.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And that is?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It can be a day.\u00a0 It can be two days.\u00a0 You can have a day of Granny Camp and do character day.\u00a0 If you have all boys do Batman and Robin.\u00a0 Or if you have all girls do Cinderella Day.\u00a0 Or you can do one day.\u00a0 I had had major surgery and couldn\u2019t do Granny Camp. We went to Florida, rented a condo, and I said \u201ccan I have your children for a day?\u201d\u00a0 I said \u201cwe\u2019re going to have mini Granny Camp.\u201d\u00a0 They came to my condo. They all loved purple.\u00a0 I\u2019m not a purple fan but they love purple. So we had \u201cPurple Day.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, what is Purple Day?\u00a0 Like I say, I wish I\u2019d been a kindergarten teacher.\u00a0 But we colored with purple crayons, we played with purple play dough, we had purple grapes and purple jelly on our peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.\u00a0 We sang \u201cOne Eyed, One- Horned Flying Purple People Eater\u201d and we just did purple things all day long!\u00a0 So it was Purple Day.\u00a0 It\u2019s doesn\u2019t have to be fancy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So it can be a day but how long can it go before you say alright, this has got to stop.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 A day!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, you\u2019ve gone two weeks with Granny Camp? Right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, it\u2019s only a week now. In the beginning, when the first three came, I did it for two weeks and then the next year I did it ten days and then I thought a week is enough.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s what I was looking for!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 The more you have.\u00a0 They can only stand each other for so long.\u00a0 And they\u2019re nice for about a week to each other.\u00a0 They really all get along.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They really are nice for a week, though?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, let me tell you\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is that a guarantee?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because Grandmother has rules and the rules are in the book, the <u>Granny Camp<\/u> book.\u00a0 I have the rules.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Let\u2019s talk about those because I was not prepared for the new role I would have with my grandchildren and one of the areas is around rules.\u00a0 Talk to me about rules for a moment.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well there are some wonderful rules, some very specific rules.\u00a0 I mean, there\u2019s general rules like we don\u2019t run in the house and we don\u2019t jump on the beds and we don\u2019t jump on each other.\u00a0 We don\u2019t wear high heels--we do a lot of dress up for the little girls--we don\u2019t wear high heels on the stairs.\u00a0 You know, things like that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe Golden Rule is the main rule that we abide by at camp.\u00a0 So I lay out all those.\u00a0 We have the toilet paper rule.\u00a0 Can I talk about that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 We had to take, the first year that we had the seven little girls, the second day that we were there, we had to take the whole toilet off of its base, off of the floor, because it got stopped up with toilet paper.\u00a0 I mean it\u2019s little girls.\u00a0 What do you do?\u00a0 So we instigated the four square rule.\u00a0 It\u2019s just four squares.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So\u2026rationing!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rationing, yes!\u00a0 Grandmother does rationing.\u00a0 And then there\u2019s telephone rule.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Parents can\u2019t call their grandchildren at Granny Camp especially when they are little.\u00a0 We had an incident that first year with a five year old.\u00a0 Her mother called about two nights before camp was over and said \u201cI\u2019ve just got to talk with her\u201d and I said \u201cwell, alright, I don\u2019t want you to, but alright.\u201d\u00a0 So I let her talk to her daughter.\u00a0 I put all seven in the shower and I let them scrub each other\u2019s backs.\u00a0 They\u2019re seven to four years old and they all get in this big glass shower and they scrub the walls\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I get the picture!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I got one out and I said \u201ccome here, come here.\u201d\u00a0 So I told her who it was and go off and talk to her.\u00a0 She talked to her mother and I said \u201cnow don\u2019t tell any of the other children that you\u2019ve talked to your mother.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alright.\u00a0 So we got ready for bed, we said our prayers, and about thirty minutes later, here she comes.\u00a0 Sobbing.\u00a0 I said \u201cwhat is the matter?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cI want to go home and see my mother.\u201d\u00a0 Well, in about ten more minutes all seven of them were crying and all of them were ready to go home.\u00a0 I said, \u201cSee, that\u2019s why we don\u2019t talk to parents.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnce they talk to their parents they want to go home.\u00a0 Prior to that, they hadn\u2019t even thought of their parents.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t an issue.\u00a0 So no telephone calls.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now you said \u201ctucked into bed.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No wait.\u00a0 Before you move off of rules, I want to talk about the rules for one more second.\u00a0 We\u2019re about to go and babysit some of our grandchildren.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to keep the number anonymous so the FBI can\u2019t figure out who it is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But fewer than ten, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Fewer than ten.\u00a0 One of the rules we had foisted upon us was no sugar.\u00a0 No sugar.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh dear.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And he said \u201cPoppa\u2014that\u2019s my name\u2014Poppa, you cannot bring sugar as treats for the kids.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of them had a bunch of cavities, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, they said that they\u2019d been to the dentist and it was really, really bad news and that I couldn\u2019t have my gummy bear invasion.\u00a0 There\u2019s always a gummy bear invasion with any of my grandkids, anytime.\u00a0 It\u2019s just astounding how it happens.\u00a0 I don\u2019t understand it really.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know.\u00a0 I understand.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2026But they\u2019re all over the yard.\u00a0 Kids go pick them up and they get sick on them for days.\u00a0 It\u2019s fun!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughing)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s wonderful!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It really is a blast.\u00a0 So I wrote my son back.\u00a0 Uh oh.\u00a0 I\u2019ve let out that amount of information.\u00a0 I wrote my son back and I said \u201cOh, this is totally unfair.\u00a0 I cannot believe you\u2019re asking me to come over there for this three day babysitting adventure, which is now going to be turned into a mini non-sissy cousins\u2019 camp.\u00a0 I am going to host this baby, alright?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br>Anyway, so he says \u201cno sugar.\u201d\u00a0 So I say, \u201cSon.\u00a0 This is all about tradition.\u00a0 What am I going to do?\u00a0 Have them run out in the yard and look for broccoli and brussel sprouts?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 And be excited about it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Asparagus?\u00a0 I mean, sure, the kids are really going to get into that.\u00a0 So we\u2019re in a little bit of arm punch of parents roll their eyes and say, \u201dThis is the kind of grandmother\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 But that\u2019s what it is.\u00a0 It\u2019s a grandmother and grandmother gets to do whatever grandmother wants to do.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019re just pouring gasoline on a fire.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to get phone calls, not only from my children, but from listeners all over the country saying \u201cCan you believe Ann Dierk\u2019s Granny Camp? \u201c\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you know what I did on top of that?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m afraid to ask.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, after this little story, I\u2019ll tell you what I did about two years ago.\u00a0 I gave them their dinner.\u00a0 Usually I serve up their plates.\u00a0 We have children\u2019s food.\u00a0 I send them a list before they come to camp.\u00a0 Tell me what you like for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, things that your mother won\u2019t let you have but your grandmother will let you have.\u00a0 I get a list\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You actually bait them!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I get all that back so that I have a list of all those things.\u00a0 So we eat children food.\u00a0 We eat macaroni and cheese and, you know, all those things that children like.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Nutritious.\u00a0 Very nutritious.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I told them it\u2019s not nutrition camp.\u00a0 Don\u2019t\u2019 plan on it.\u00a0 It\u2019s not.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Major food groups.\u00a0 Chocolates.\u00a0 Ice Cream.\u00a0 Cotton candy\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wait a minute.\u00a0 Now let me finish my story.\u00a0 So then I usually serve up their plates.\u00a0 This night I didn\u2019t.\u00a0 I just gave them a bowl of fruit and put them out on the deck and said \u201cEat your fruit and dinner\u2019s coming.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 On the deck.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, we have a deck on the back of our house.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\u00a0 You can hose it down.\u00a0 I understand.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, it\u2019s wonderful.\u00a0 Absolutely!\u00a0 I eat out there as often as we can.\u00a0 So I give them their fruit, they eat all their fruit and they\u2019re sitting there, just waiting.\u00a0 I said \u201cOkay kids, we\u2019re having dessert for dinner!\u201d\u00a0 And all we had was ice cream and cake and sprinkles and things to put on the ice cream and that\u2019s all we had for dinner.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Shhhhh\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s okay!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This broadcast will not be aired before this weekend.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s just what grandmothers and granddads get to do.\u00a0 Special things.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know what we\u2019re going to do .\u00a0 I believe you\u2019ve raised an issue here.\u00a0 What we\u2019re going to do\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve ruined America\u2019s teeth!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re going to have a straw poll.\u00a0 One of our famous Bob straw polls.\u00a0 He bought like how many dozen, gross of straws?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was, I think, a thousand.\u00a0 No, it was five thousand\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And he got them for one-tenth of a cent apiece.\u00a0 It was like\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was five thousand straws\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So we had a straw poll one time to find out how many people agreed with Bob who saved some cash\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Bargain hunter\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And still has them and will and is going to pass them on to his kids when he dies, or MaryAnn who wanted to buy the expensive fifty-pack of straws for a dollar.\u00a0 Fifty straws for a dollar!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Two cents apiece!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 For a dollar!\u00a0 I got five thousand straws for ten bucks!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I forget.\u00a0 How did the poll come out?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I forget.\u00a0 It was like fifty\/fifty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, so here is going to be the poll.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to give people a highly sophisticated poll.\u00a0 If you\u2019re a parent, you check one box and that takes you to a poll that has yes or no, Granny or Grandpa can set their own rules and can even break a few rules\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you want parents to vote whether grandparents should have that freedom\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2026and we want grandparents to vote whether they should have that freedom.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that\u2019s okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, here\u2019s the thing\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think you\u2019ll find out that we win.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughing)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We have the final vote, kids vote too?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, I think we should open it to the children.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 A third category?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Of course.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, if we have the capacity on our website we\u2019ll have a third category for the kids to vote.\u00a0 Should Granny and Gramps be able to\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Set the rules\u2026 I\u2019m ready for ice cream, cake, and cookies so let\u2019s wrap this thing up.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<br><strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here\u2019s really the challenge.\u00a0 You know, we\u2019ve laughed and had a good time today. Being a grandparent is really an assignment from God.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 Absolutely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is a privilege.\u00a0 It is really a high and holy privilege and the question is, as a grandparent, what are you doing to impact your legacy?\u00a0 How are you going to shape\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\ttheir conscience, their souls, their personalities, their ability to relate to people, their breadth of knowledge?\u00a0 What do you have that you would like to pass on?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe it\u2019s about trees and rocks, like Ann\u2019s husband is doing.\u00a0 Maybe it\u2019s a Bible verse.\u00a0 But the point is, begin to connect relationally with your grandchildren and tread carefully on these rules that Ann told you to break!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughing)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBecause I\u2019m not sure the parents are going to appreciate her stance on this topic.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And you may think \u201cI\u2019m just not wired the way Ann is wired.\u00a0 I\u2019m not a kindergarten teacher wanna-be.\u201d\u00a0 That\u2019s what the book is for.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Ann:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0
