thanks for joining us on the Wednesday edition.\u00a0 We\u2019re hearing a story this week that reminds us that there are often twists and turns in the road of life that leads you onto a bumpy path.\u00a0 As I was thinking about that, Dennis, I was thinking, honestly, over the last couple of years for us as a ministry the path has been a little bumpier than we had experienced in the thirty-five years that you\u2019ve been a part of FamilyLife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 In fact, I was thinking the same thing as you were talking about the bumpy path.\u00a0 I was going, \u201cSeems like some of these bumps have been a little deeper than others.\u201d\u00a0 Financially, it has been a real challenge in the last couple of years, but the ministry continues to be extremely strong.\u00a0 In fact, we\u2019ve got plans for the 2011that I\u2019m really excited about\u2014in fact, more excited perhaps than ever before in our ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve had some good news in recent days as well.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had some friends in the ministry who have stepped forward.\u00a0 They have put together a matching gift challenge, and the fund is up to a little more than two million dollars at this point.\u00a0 So, the way that this works that every time we receive a donation in December, they will match the donation we receive with a donation out of the fund.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou send a donation of $50 or call 1-800-FL-Today and make a $100 donation; it is a tough life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe guest that I wanted to introduce today has seen the best and the toughest of life.\u00a0 This is a beautiful woman actually.\u00a0 Billy Graham when I first got a ministry said, \u201cNever travel alone with a beautiful woman.\u201d\u00a0 Well, I\u2019ve come to Little Rock travelling alone with a beautiful woman.\u00a0 A woman\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who is by the way beaming right now as you say this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who is my daughter.\u00a0 She is more beautiful on the inside than she is on the outside.\u00a0 This woman has proven herself with a toughness inside that is really proven her metal and character.\u00a0 She has faced adversity.\u00a0 As I told her once, \u201cIt isn\u2019t the adversity that will define you; it is the way in which you react to it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe has suffered adversity and developed her character in the process.\u00a0 God has used that adversity for great blessings.\u00a0 She\u2019s one of the handful of people who has most inspired me in my life.\u00a0 So, I am thrilled to be able to introduce my daughter, Emily Colson.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Thank you, Dad.\u00a0 It is such a pleasure to be here; and I love you too, Dad.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cOne of the handful of people who has most inspired me in my life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That is true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is quite an honor.\u00a0 My dad has been a tremendous role model and inspiration in my life in those tough years of wondering how God could possibly do anything good with my life.\u00a0 We were at such a pit.\u00a0 I would think about my dad and what God has done in his life when he was in a pit and how God has used that time in my dad\u2019s life, his lowest times of Watergate to reach so many people and inspire them.\u00a0 That has been a tremendous motivator for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Emily, we have talked a little bit earlier this week about your relationship with your dad.\u00a0 I\u2019m just curious: what is the biggest difference between the pre-Watergate Dad who you grew up with and the post-prison Dad who you have a relationship with now?\u00a0 What stands out\u2014I\u2019m wondering if it is his language or if\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure if I could give you one defining thing.\u00a0 I think it goes into all aspects of my dad\u2019s life into our relationship together.\u00a0 There is a softness, a gentleness that didn\u2019t exist there before between us.\u00a0 There is an availability.\u00a0 There is this easy presence in being with my dad.\u00a0 I love to be with my dad.\u00a0 It is the nicest place I could possibly be wherever we are together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We are glad you came here.\u00a0 I know part of why Chuck so admires her.\u00a0 He has read Emily\u2019s book <em>Dancing with Max<\/em> twenty times.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He had a little bit to do with writing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A part of this himself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He did.\u00a0 Emily, this story is about your life as a single parent with Max, a young man who has autism and the struggles and the loneliness and the challenges of going through that with him by yourself.\u00a0 There was a moment when you actually ended up giving up.\u00a0 You came to the end of yourself.\u00a0 Max was about nine years of age.\u00a0 You know the story I\u2019m talking about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I sure do.\u00a0 I sure do.\u00a0 Max was nine, and we were at that point essentially hostages of autism.\u00a0 We could barely get out of the house without tantrums; so, it was easier just to stay home and stop trying.\u00a0 It was a really difficult time.\u00a0 I was at that point a single mother and had gone through this painful divorce.\u00a0 I was battling the school systems trying to get help for Max and not sleeping at all.\u00a0 It was so tough.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt got to the point that one night in the middle of the night I went in and decided I would just clean and that would make me feel better.\u00a0 It would relax me.\u00a0 I opened up a closet door; the shelf broke, and all the bottles spilled out onto the floor.\u00a0 That just finished me.\u00a0 I took that door, and I swung it so hard that I ended up putting a hole right through the wall.\u00a0 That was a little bit of a wakeup call for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI realized that I had to do something different.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know how we were going to keep going, but I knew I wasn\u2019t going to quit.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t imagine that there was any possible way I could do this for the rest of my life.\u00a0 I could even do it for another week.\u00a0 I thought maybe what I can do is one more day.\u00a0 If I can do one day, I\u2019m going to live that day big and brave and bold.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor some of us, living brave is not swimming with sharks and sky diving.\u00a0 For some of us, it is just getting up in the morning and living in the way you hope that you might be able to live.\u00a0 So, I woke up the next morning; and I said, \u201cThis is my last day alive.\u00a0 What am I going to do with it?\u201d\u00a0 It changed everything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, \u201cAm I going to care if people stare at us when Max has a tantrum?\u00a0 Am I going to care if the day doesn\u2019t go well?\u00a0 Or am I going to find the joy because it is one day?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019ve been living that way for just about ten years now, and it has been life changing.\u00a0 Truthfully, I take Max places.\u00a0 We do things.\u00a0 We do not let our circumstances define our lives.\u00a0 It is a constant battle to do this.\u00a0\u00a0 It is not an easy thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you read in the book, the various adventures she\u2019s started out on with Max.\u00a0 Some of them turned into these hysterically funny situations.\u00a0 Some of them went very sour.\u00a0 Some of them became great triumphs where Max was the bridge builder that Emily said he would be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was a story you told about going into a mini mart with Max and his fascination with refrigerators.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is such a great story!\u00a0 Max loves appliances.\u00a0 He loves refrigerators and vacuums.\u00a0 I think mechanical things are just more predictable than people; so Max loves those things.\u00a0 When he goes into a mini mart, he gets so excited.\u00a0 He jumps up and down.\u00a0 He is truly the joy boy, but not everybody appreciates that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was a clerk in this particular store that was being unkind to Max, really did not want him there.\u00a0 There was a customer up at the counter watching the whole thing about to buy a candy bar.\u00a0 Finally, we looked at Max and said, \u201cI think it is time to find another store.\u201d\u00a0 Well, the customer that was up at that counter was watching the whole episode with Max and watching the way that the clerk was behaving.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPushed the candy bar back, put her money back in her pocket, and said, \u201cI think I will find another store too.\u201d\u00a0 Walked over beside my son.\u00a0 As they are walking out\u2014Max loves to repeat lines.\u00a0 I don\u2019t\u2019 think he always knows what they mean; but as they are going through the door, he poked his head back in the store.\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou could learn from me.\u201d\u00a0 The customer said, \u201cYou\u2019re right. We can learn from you.\u201d\u00a0 It was just beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are also those tender moments, too, not just the funny ones or the dramatically difficult ones.\u00a0 There are also the tender moments.\u00a0 Remember the story you tell of Max and the little girls?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I sure do.\u00a0 When Max was two, he didn\u2019t have any language at all.\u00a0 You would not have thought that he was even understanding language.\u00a0 He was like a human super ball, just bouncing around all the time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were in Florida.\u00a0 My dad and Patty were delivering Angel Tree gifts to a family nearby.\u00a0 We went along; and I thought, \u201cIf we need to, we\u2019ll just wait outside.\u201d\u00a0 Usually it didn\u2019t work well if Max went into a new environment.\u00a0 The whole way there Max is sucking on his fingers and looking out the window.\u00a0 As I now know, memorizing every street sign.\u00a0 He would later recite to me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were telling him that this is a family that needs love.\u00a0 They have a parent that is in prison.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to show them love.\u00a0 We got there, and I am holding Max as we walked into this little house.\u00a0 He\u2019s wiggling suddenly in my arms trying to get down.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe ran over to this little girl who is sitting in an overstuffed chair and leaned into her.\u00a0 Then, he tottled over to another little girl who was sitting on the floor and put his face right up against hers until the two of them melted into one.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked at my dad.\u00a0 He looked at me.\u00a0 We were so stunned.\u00a0 Max never left my side.\u00a0 He was glued to my hip constantly, and he showed that family love in a greater way than we ever could have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 The amazing thing was as we drove out in my car.\u00a0 We were talking about how these kids need to be loved.\u00a0 Their parent is in prison.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t think Max was taking any of this in because I looked back in the back seat.\u00a0 He is looking out the window.\u00a0 The first thing he did was go over and show love to those kids.\u00a0 You could see how the kids responded.\u00a0 All of us stood in the room, it was startling.\u00a0 Then, he came right over and sat next to Emily and sat there for the rest of the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How does church work for you?\u00a0 How do you make that happen?\u00a0 And how has Max done there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve had our challenges with church.\u00a0 We really have a victorious story; but when Max was young, it worked.\u00a0 We could go to church.\u00a0 I would stay with him in the little classrooms.\u00a0 He would bounce on my knee to the music.\u00a0 He loved to go.\u00a0 He\u2019d run around at the coffee hour.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnce he hit that eight year old, nine year old stage, church became like everything else in our lives.\u00a0 We just couldn\u2019t do it.\u00a0 He was too loud.\u00a0 There wasn\u2019t a classroom that really worked for him.\u00a0 He certainly couldn\u2019t sit through the service with me.\u00a0 So, we stayed home.\u00a0 We were home from church for about five years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think people don\u2019t realize how many families are missing from church because we can\u2019t get across the threshold to show that we even have needs and that we\u2019d like to be there.\u00a0 We are just invisible.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when we made this decision, I made this decision that we would live each day big and bold.\u00a0 One of those decisions is that we had to go back to church.\u00a0 So, when Max was about thirteen years old, we did something very brave.\u00a0 We are going to take Max to the one thing he always loved about church.\u00a0 He loved it to be over.\u00a0 We are going when church is over.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe showed up at the coffee hour.\u00a0 Immediately someone said to Max, \u201cCould you help stack up these chairs?\u201d\u00a0 All it took was that one man stepping forward and including Max, and he started stacking chairs.\u00a0 By the end of that time, by the end of that first day, that man invited Max to be part of what they call \u201cThe Grunt Crew.\u201d\u00a0 That is the cleanup crew at our church.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can\u2019t tell you how proud Max was to be personally invited to be included.\u00a0 It really wasn\u2019t that extraordinary for someone to do.\u00a0 All it takes is for one person to step forward and say, \u201cWe need you\u201d to really change a child\u2019s life.\u00a0 So, for six years, we have gone to the grunt crew.\u00a0 We go after church.\u00a0 We go after the service.\u00a0 There is no one in that church that serves with more joy than Max.\u00a0 He may not be in the service, but he is serving with tremendous joy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe stands in the middle of the church when the men are stacking up all the chairs.\u00a0 He throws his fist up in the air, and he will yell, \u201cNow that is team work!\u201d\u00a0 His joy just spreads around.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is so great.\u00a0 Then\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He got a promotion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 He got a promotion.\u00a0 I really thought, \u201cMax is ready for something new.\u201d\u00a0 About a month ago, we didn\u2019t show up on time for church because that is really not our style.\u00a0 We showed up early for church.\u00a0 Max started a new job as a greeter.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to tell you if there is anybody in a church that knows how precious the privilege of being in a church, it is Max.\u00a0 He has fought so long and so hard to be there.\u00a0 You want to be greeted by Max because you don\u2019t just get a hand shake.\u00a0 He jumps up and down.\u00a0 He is so excited that you are there.\u00a0 That is the way we all should come into church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love the pictures that Emily sent me.\u00a0 He is wearing a blazer which he bought at some second hand store for five dollars.\u00a0 He really looks pretty good in it.\u00a0 He is standing there with his hand out.\u00a0 He\u2019s just helping people into the church with this big smile on his face.\u00a0 Now, we\u2019ve gone from being frightened of the church to being part of the church.\u00a0 It is just wonderful to see that happen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Emily, he came to you and initiated the idea that he wanted to be baptized, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was so great because we were at my dad\u2019s church in Florida.\u00a0 There is a big lobby, and we were sitting outside in that lobby watching the service on television.\u00a0 Max saw a woman being baptized.\u00a0 He got very curious asking me, \u201cWhat is that?\u00a0 What does that mean?\u201d\u00a0 Then, he said, \u201cI want to be baptized in grandpa\u2019s pool.\u201d\u00a0 Of course, I\u2019m looking at him thinking, \u201cWhat?\u00a0 Oh my goodness!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust then my dad walked out to check on us.\u00a0 I told him, and we\u2019re both so excited.\u00a0 Then, we got a little bit nervous.\u00a0 We started asking him questions.\u00a0 For about three days the interrogation went on.\u00a0 Max knew every answer to everything we ever asked him.\u00a0 Now nobody did that to me; nobody interrogated me like that.\u00a0 We wanted to make sure that Max understood what it actually was.\u00a0 We finally realized that we\u2019re making this too hard.\u00a0 Max wants to be baptized.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, my dad and maybe he\u2019ll tell you was ordained for a day and baptized Max in the pool.\u00a0 It would have been too difficult for him to go into the church to be baptized.\u00a0 That was one of the most beautiful moments.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t about any report that stamped him insufficient what anyone\u2019s judgment on him was.\u00a0 It was about what he can do.\u00a0 He can give his life to Christ, and he did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m a Southern Baptist in which denomination we believe that lay people can baptize.\u00a0 I don\u2019t like that.\u00a0 I like the clergy to do it because I like it to be representation of the church that that person is coming into.\u00a0 So, I called my pastor, and I said, \u201cIf you came over, he would kind of freak out if you got in the pool with him.\u00a0 How about ordaining me for a day?\u00a0 My conscious will be clear.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve never heard of an ordination for a day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf anyone qualifies, Chuck Colson does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck: <\/strong>\u00a0Ordained for a day.\u00a0 I took Max into the pool.\u00a0 As I recited the baptismal confession, I looked into his face.\u00a0 There was such joy and understanding.\u00a0 Into the water and coming up, this radiant look on his face.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEmily got a picture of that day and also drew a diagram\u2014remember she talked to her earlier about picture talks, the way that she is able to explain things to Max.\u00a0 She took him through the pictures.\u00a0 Max loves Jesus.\u00a0 Max wants to show his love for Jesus.\u00a0 She walks right through like a cartoon strip what a baptism meant.\u00a0 Then, she said, \u201cMax is baptized.\u00a0 He is coming up out of the water.\u00a0 Max loves Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 It is just wonderful.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is hanging\u2014I have an eagle wall at home.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry to confess it with presidents and kings and all kinds of famous people that I\u2019ve know in my life.\u00a0 In the center of that eagle wall is that drawing of Max\u2019s baptism and the picture of my putting his head down into the water.\u00a0 It is one of the most precious things of my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just appreciate you Emily in letting us peer into what I would call the Holy of Holies.\u00a0 Your dad described you earlier as a hero.\u00a0 Even though, you don\u2019t describe yourself like that.\u00a0 You are just doing your duty, but that is what heroes do.\u00a0 One day at a time they do their duty.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have a great gift in writing.\u00a0 I predict this book is going to minister to a lot of people.\u00a0 I think be used this Christmas to remind people of the importance of the Maxes of this world and how they really do need to dance with them and enjoy life together.\u00a0 Thanks for being on the broadcast.\u00a0 autistic son, there came a point where Emily Colson dropped out of church.\u00a0 It just didn\u2019t work for Max and her to attend.\u00a0 He was too disruptive.\u00a0 Emily says her situation is not that we had to go back to church.\u00a0 The wonderful thing is what I\u2019ve seen in our church, and I\u2019ve seen it over and over are churches need Maxes.\u00a0 He brings out love and compassion We\u2019re hearing a story this week that reminds us that there are often twists and turns in the road of life that leads you onto a bumpy path.\u00a0 As I was thinking about that, Dennis, I was thinking, honestly, over the last couple of years for us as a ministry the path has been a little bumpier than we had experienced in the thirty-five years that you\u2019ve been a part of FamilyLife.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 In fact, I was thinking the same thing as you were talking about the bumpy path.\u00a0 I was going, \u201cSeems like some of these bumps have been a little deeper than others.\u201d\u00a0 Financially, it has been a real challenge in the last couple of years, but the ministry continues to be extremely strong.\u00a0 In fact, we\u2019ve got plans for the 2011that I\u2019m really excited about\u2014in fact, more excited perhaps than ever before in our ministry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve had some good news in recent days as well.\u00a0 We\u2019ve had some friends in the ministry who have stepped forward.\u00a0 They have put together a matching gift challenge, and the fund is up to a little more than two million dollars at this point.\u00a0 So, the way that this works that every time we who love Him and are called according to His purposes for the good of all those people.\u201d\u00a0 We never read 8:29.\u00a0 8:29, \u201cBecause we are predestined in the beginning to be conformed to the likeness of His son.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHow will you conform to the likeness of one who has suffered on the cross?\u00a0 You will suffer.\u00a0 You will suffer as a Christian.\u00a0 Don\u2019t get a rosy idea about Christianity being an easy life; it is a tough life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe guest that I wanted to introduce today has seen the best and the toughest of life.\u00a0 This is a beautiful woman actually.\u00a0 Billy Graham when I first got a ministry said, \u201cNever travel alone with a beautiful woman.\u201d\u00a0 Well, I\u2019ve come to Little Rock travelling alone with a beautiful woman.\u00a0 A woman\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who is by the way beaming right now as you say this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who is my daughter.\u00a0 She is more beautiful on the inside than she is on the outside.\u00a0 This woman has proven herself with a toughness inside that is really proven her metal and character.\u00a0 She has faced adversity.\u00a0 As I told her once, \u201cIt isn\u2019t the adversity that will define you; it is the way in which you react to it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe has suffered adversity and developed her character in the process.\u00a0 God has used that adversity for great blessings.\u00a0 here; and I love you too, Dad.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u201cOne of the handful of people who has most inspired me in my life.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That is true.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is quite an honor.\u00a0 My dad has been a tremendous role model and inspiration in my life in those tough years of wondering how God could possibly do anything good with my life.\u00a0 We were at such a pit.\u00a0 I would think about my dad and what God has done in his life when he was in a pit and how God has used that time in my dad\u2019s life, his lowest times of Watergate to reach so many people and inspire them.\u00a0 That has been a tremendous motivator for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Emily, we have talked a little bit earlier this week about your relationship with your dad.\u00a0 I\u2019m just curious: what is the biggest difference between the pre-Watergate Dad who you grew up with and the post-prison Dad who you have a relationship with now?\u00a0 What stands out\u2014I\u2019m wondering if it is his language or if\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure if I could give you one defining thing.\u00a0 I think it goes into all aspects of my dad\u2019s life into our relationship together.\u00a0 There is a softness, a gentleness that didn\u2019t exist there before between us.\u00a0 There is an availability.\u00a0 There is this easy presence in being with my dad.\u00a0 I love to be with my dad.\u00a0 It is the nicest place I could possibly be wherever we are together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 We are glad you came here.\u00a0 I know part of why Chuck so admires her.\u00a0 He has read Emily\u2019s book <em>Dancing with Max<\/em> twenty times.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He had a little bit to do with writing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A part of this himself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He did.\u00a0 Emily, this story is about your life as a single parent with Max, a young man who has autism and the struggles and the loneliness and the challenges of going through that with him by yourself.\u00a0 There was a moment when you actually ended up giving up.\u00a0 You came to the end of yourself.\u00a0 Max was about nine years of age.\u00a0 You know the story I\u2019m talking about?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I sure do.\u00a0 I sure do.\u00a0 Max was nine, and we were at that point essentially hostages of autism.\u00a0 We could barely get out of the house without tantrums; so, it was easier just to stay home and stop trying.\u00a0 It was a really difficult time.\u00a0 I was at that point a single mother and had gone through this painful divorce.\u00a0 I was battling the school systems trying to get help for Max and not sleeping at all.\u00a0 It was so tough.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt got to the point that one night in the middle of the night I went in and decided I would just clean and that would make me feel better.\u00a0 It would relax me.\u00a0 I opened up a closet door; the shelf broke, and all the bottles spilled out onto the floor.\u00a0 That just finished me.\u00a0 I took that door, and I swung it so hard that I ended up putting a hole right through the wall.\u00a0 That was a little bit of a wakeup call for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI realized that I had to do something different.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t know how we were going to keep going, but I knew I wasn\u2019t going to quit.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t imagine that there was any possible way I could do this for the rest of my life.\u00a0 I could even do it for another week.\u00a0 I thought maybe what I can do is one more day.\u00a0 If I can do one day, I\u2019m going to live that day big and brave and bold.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor some of us, living brave is not swimming with sharks and sky diving.\u00a0 For some of us, it is just getting up in the morning and living in the way you hope that you might be able to live.\u00a0 So, I woke up the next morning; and I said, \u201cThis is my last day alive.\u00a0 What am I going to do with it?\u201d\u00a0 It changed everything.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI thought, \u201cAm I going to care if people stare at us when Max has a tantrum?\u00a0 Am I going to care if the day doesn\u2019t go well?\u00a0 Or am I going to find the joy because it is one day?\u201d\u00a0 We\u2019ve been living that way for just about ten years now, and it has been life changing.\u00a0 Truthfully, I take Max places.\u00a0 We do things.\u00a0 We do not let our circumstances define our lives.\u00a0 It is a constant battle to do this.\u00a0\u00a0 It is not an easy thing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you read in the book, the various adventures she\u2019s started out on with Max.\u00a0 Some of them turned into these hysterically funny situations.\u00a0 Some of them went very sour.\u00a0 Some of them became great triumphs where Max was the bridge builder that Emily said he would be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was a story you told about going into a mini mart with Max and his fascination with refrigerators.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is such a great story!\u00a0 Max loves appliances.\u00a0 He loves refrigerators and vacuums.\u00a0 I think mechanical things are just more predictable than people; so Max loves those things.\u00a0 When he goes into a mini mart, he gets so excited.\u00a0 He jumps up and down.\u00a0 He is truly the joy boy, but not everybody appreciates that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere was a clerk in this particular store that was being unkind to Max, really did not want him there.\u00a0 There was a customer up at the counter watching the whole thing about to buy a candy bar.\u00a0 Finally, we looked at Max and said, \u201cI think it is time to find another store.\u201d\u00a0 Well, the customer that was up at that counter was watching the whole episode with Max and watching the way that the clerk was behaving.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPushed the candy bar back, put her money back in her pocket, and said, \u201cI think I will find another store too.\u201d\u00a0 Walked over beside my son.\u00a0 As they are walking out\u2014Max loves to repeat lines.\u00a0 I don\u2019t\u2019 think he always knows what they mean; but as they are going through the door, he poked his head back in the store.\u00a0 He said, \u201cYou could learn from me.\u201d\u00a0 The customer said, \u201cYou\u2019re right. We can learn from you.\u201d\u00a0 It was just beautiful.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There are also those tender moments, too, not just the funny ones or the dramatically difficult ones.\u00a0 There are also the tender moments.\u00a0 Remember the story you tell of Max and the little girls?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I sure do.\u00a0 When Max was two, he didn\u2019t have any language at all.\u00a0 You would not have thought that he was even understanding language.\u00a0 He was like a human super ball, just bouncing around all the time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were in Florida.\u00a0 My dad and Patty were delivering Angel Tree gifts to a family nearby.\u00a0 We went along; and I thought, \u201cIf we need to, we\u2019ll just wait outside.\u201d\u00a0 Usually it didn\u2019t work well if Max went into a new environment.\u00a0 The whole way there Max is sucking on his fingers and looking out the window.\u00a0 As I now know, memorizing every street sign.\u00a0 He would later recite to me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were telling him that this is a family that needs love.\u00a0 They have a parent that is in prison.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to show them love.\u00a0 We got there, and I am holding Max as we walked into this little house.\u00a0 He\u2019s wiggling suddenly in my arms trying to get down.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe ran over to this little girl who is sitting in an overstuffed chair and leaned into her.\u00a0 Then, he tottled over to another little girl who was sitting on the floor and put his face right up against hers until the two of them melted into one.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI looked at my dad.\u00a0 He looked at me.\u00a0 We were so stunned.\u00a0 Max never left my side.\u00a0 He was glued to my hip constantly, and he showed that family love in a greater way than we ever could have.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 The amazing thing was as we drove out in my car.\u00a0 We were talking about how these kids need to be loved.\u00a0 Their parent is in prison.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t think Max was taking any of this in because I looked back in the back seat.\u00a0 He is looking out the window.\u00a0 The first thing he did was go over and show love to those kids.\u00a0 You could see how the kids responded.\u00a0 All of us stood in the room, it was startling.\u00a0 Then, he came right over and sat next to Emily and sat there for the rest of the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How does church work for you?\u00a0 How do you make that happen?\u00a0 And how has Max done there?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019ve had our challenges with church.\u00a0 We really have a victorious story; but when Max was young, it worked.\u00a0 We could go to church.\u00a0 I would stay with him in the little classrooms.\u00a0 He would bounce on my knee to the music.\u00a0 He loved to go.\u00a0 He\u2019d run around at the coffee hour.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOnce he hit that eight year old, nine year old stage, church became like everything else in our lives.\u00a0 We just couldn\u2019t do it.\u00a0 He was too loud.\u00a0 There wasn\u2019t a classroom that really worked for him.\u00a0 He certainly couldn\u2019t sit through the service with me.\u00a0 So, we stayed home.\u00a0 We were home from church for about five years.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think people don\u2019t realize how many families are missing from church because we can\u2019t get across the threshold to show that we even have needs and that we\u2019d like to be there.\u00a0 We are just invisible.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, when we made this decision, I made this decision that we would live each day big and bold.\u00a0 One of those decisions is that we had to go back to church.\u00a0 So, when Max was about thirteen years old, we did something very brave.\u00a0 We are going to take Max to the one thing he always loved about church.\u00a0 He loved it to be over.\u00a0 We are going when church is over.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe showed up at the coffee hour.\u00a0 Immediately someone said to Max, \u201cCould you help stack up these chairs?\u201d\u00a0 All it took was that one man stepping forward and including Max, and he started stacking chairs.\u00a0 By the end of that time, by the end of that first day, that man invited Max to be part of what they call \u201cThe Grunt Crew.\u201d\u00a0 That is the cleanup crew at our church.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI can\u2019t tell you how proud Max was to be personally invited to be included.\u00a0 It really wasn\u2019t that extraordinary for someone to do.\u00a0 All it takes is for one person to step forward and say, \u201cWe need you\u201d to really change a child\u2019s life.\u00a0 So, for six years, we have gone to the grunt crew.\u00a0 We go after church.\u00a0 We go after the service.\u00a0 There is no one in that church that serves with more joy than Max.\u00a0 He may not be in the service, but he is serving with tremendous joy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe stands in the middle of the church when the men are stacking up all the chairs.\u00a0 He throws his fist up in the air, and he will yell, \u201cNow that is team work!\u201d\u00a0 His joy just spreads around.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is so great.\u00a0 Then\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He got a promotion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 He got a promotion.\u00a0 I really thought, \u201cMax is ready for something new.\u201d\u00a0 About a month ago, we didn\u2019t show up on time for church because that is really not our style.\u00a0 We showed up early for church.\u00a0 Max started a new job as a greeter.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m going to tell you if there is anybody in a church that knows how precious the privilege of being in a church, it is Max.\u00a0 He has fought so long and so hard to be there.\u00a0 You want to be greeted by Max because you don\u2019t just get a hand shake.\u00a0 He jumps up and down.\u00a0 He is so excited that you are there.\u00a0 That is the way we all should come into church.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love the pictures that Emily sent me.\u00a0 He is wearing a blazer which he bought at some second hand store for five dollars.\u00a0 He really looks pretty good in it.\u00a0 He is standing there with his hand out.\u00a0 He\u2019s just helping people into the church with this big smile on his face.\u00a0 Now, we\u2019ve gone from being frightened of the church to being part of the church.\u00a0 It is just wonderful to see that happen.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Emily, he came to you and initiated the idea that he wanted to be baptized, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was so great because we were at my dad\u2019s church in Florida.\u00a0 There is a big lobby, and we were sitting outside in that lobby watching the service on television.\u00a0 Max saw a woman being baptized.\u00a0 He got very curious asking me, \u201cWhat is that?\u00a0 What does that mean?\u201d\u00a0 Then, he said, \u201cI want to be baptized in grandpa\u2019s pool.\u201d\u00a0 Of course, I\u2019m looking at him thinking, \u201cWhat?\u00a0 Oh my goodness!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJust then my dad walked out to check on us.\u00a0 I told him, and we\u2019re both so excited.\u00a0 Then, we got a little bit nervous.\u00a0 We started asking him questions.\u00a0 For about three days the interrogation went on.\u00a0 Max knew every answer to everything we ever asked him.\u00a0 Now nobody did that to me; nobody interrogated me like that.\u00a0 We wanted to make sure that Max understood what it actually was.\u00a0 We finally realized that we\u2019re making this too hard.\u00a0 Max wants to be baptized.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, my dad and maybe he\u2019ll tell you was ordained for a day and baptized Max in the pool.\u00a0 It would have been too difficult for him to go into the church to be baptized.\u00a0 That was one of the most beautiful moments.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t about any report that stamped him insufficient what anyone\u2019s judgment on him was.\u00a0 It was about what he can do.\u00a0 He can give his life to Christ, and he did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m a Southern Baptist in which denomination we believe that lay people can baptize.\u00a0 I don\u2019t like that.\u00a0 I like the clergy to do it because I like it to be representation of the church that that person is coming into.\u00a0 So, I called my pastor, and I said, \u201cIf you came over, he would kind of freak out if you got in the pool with him.\u00a0 How about ordaining me for a day?\u00a0 My conscious will be clear.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve never heard of an ordination for a day. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf anyone qualifies, Chuck Colson does.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck: <\/strong>\u00a0Ordained for a day.\u00a0 I took Max into the pool.\u00a0 As I recited the baptismal confession, I looked into his face.\u00a0 There was such joy and understanding.\u00a0 Into the water and coming up, this radiant look on his face.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEmily got a picture of that day and also drew a diagram\u2014remember she talked to her earlier about picture talks, the way that she is able to explain things to Max.\u00a0 She took him through the pictures.\u00a0 Max loves Jesus.\u00a0 Max wants to show his love for Jesus.\u00a0 She walks right through like a cartoon strip what a baptism meant.\u00a0 Then, she said, \u201cMax is baptized.\u00a0 He is coming up out of the water.\u00a0 Max loves Jesus.\u201d\u00a0 It is just wonderful.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is hanging\u2014I have an eagle wall at home.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry to confess it with presidents and kings and all kinds of famous people that I\u2019ve know in my life.\u00a0 In the center of that eagle wall is that drawing of Max\u2019s baptism and the picture of my putting his head down into the water.\u00a0 It is one of the most precious things of my life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just appreciate you Emily in letting us peer into what I would call the Holy of Holies.\u00a0 Your dad described you earlier as a hero.\u00a0 Even though, you don\u2019t describe yourself like that.\u00a0 You are just doing your duty, but that is what heroes do.\u00a0 One day at a time they do their duty.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou have a great gift in writing.\u00a0 I predict this book is going to minister to a lot of people.\u00a0 I think be used this Christmas to remind people of the importance of the Maxes of this world and how they really do need to dance with them and enjoy life together.\u00a0 Thanks for being on the broadcast.\u00a0
