The hardest thing for me in Watergate, you feel like you\u2019ve let down your kids and your family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was a confusing time.\u00a0 There was so much media and attention and it was confusing for me as a teenager.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 And I was just agonizing over it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was a tough time.\u00a0 It was difficult to have a lot of people saying ugly things about someone that you love.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 So I took her out to National Airport and as she started to turn away I grabbed her.\u00a0 I said, \u201cEmily, I hope you\u2019re not embarrassed by what I\u2019ve done.\u201d\u00a0 And she looked at me with this quick and stern look and said, \u201cNo, Daddy, I am proud of you.\u201d\u00a0 We hugged and embraced and I was crying as I was standing in the runway of that plane.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Monday, November 29<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey, and I\u2019m Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We can all reflect on the impact the Watergate episode had on our nation.\u00a0 Today we\u2019re going to spend time looking at the impact it had on one family, the Colson family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today.<\/em>\u00a0 Thanks for joining us on the Monday edition.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to hear a compelling family story today.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tActually, we\u2019ve got some compelling news that we want to share with our and his daughter, Emily.\u00a0 Welcome to the broadcast.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you, Dennis.\u00a0 Great to be with you guys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Emily, great to have you here as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you so much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Emily is an artist, a writer \u2013 and by the way, you\u2019re going to like Barbara.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to have dinner a little later, but you\u2019re going to like her a lot because she\u2019s an artist as well.\u00a0 She is a single parent mom of a young man by the name of Max.\u00a0 You\u2019ll hear more about his story a little bit later.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChuck Colson doesn\u2019t need a lot of introduction.\u00a0 He is an author, a speaker; he is the host of <em>Breakpoint<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hang on.\u00a0 He\u2019s Emily\u2019s dad.\u00a0 Let\u2019s get the important stuff \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s the biggest thing right there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He is Emily\u2019s father.\u00a0 He and his wife, Patty, have three children and five grandchildren and really, my first question is about the book <em>Dancing with Max<\/em>, which is the book that Emily has written.\u00a0 Honestly, Chuck, you really surprised me because in the prologue that you wrote for Emily\u2019s book you grabbed me by the heartstrings, immediately.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou made a statement \u2013 it was a transition statement in the book \u2013 I\u2019m going to let you set this up, but you said, \u201cThus began an experience that nearly cost me my life, but gained my daughter back.\u201d\u00a0 Powerful story!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it was a powerful experience for me, because I was the guy that was always in a hurry.\u00a0 I was out to save the world when I was twelve years old.\u00a0 I was writing letters during World War II about selling war bonds and buying stuff for the troops.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always had this streak of idealism; that\u2019s what sent me into politics.\u00a0 When I was in the Marine Corp I was driven to be the Commander of the outfit, always getting to the top in things.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t know what it was to be a dad.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t do a very good job, and Emily and I had particularly \u2013 we never really had that close of a relationship.\u00a0 I was in the Philippines when I started hemorrhaging, bleeding internally, and could have died because I made a foolish decision actually to fly home, and ended up in Georgetown Hospital with surgery.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t go well.\u00a0 It was infection, staph infection.\u00a0 I almost died there in the hospital.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEmily moved down, came actually from Boston, and stayed in that room for eleven days, she and Patty.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think Emily ever left the room.\u00a0 We had the greatest relationship even though I was half delirious at times, because we just bonded close, very close.\u00a0 I ended up praying with Emily in the room and it was just a completely different relationship.\u00a0 Ever since that experience we\u2019ve been as close as a father and daughter could ever be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This was how many years ago that this happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 This goes back to 1987 \u2013 a long time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Emily, what was your favorite moment during those eleven days?\u00a0 Was there one that really stands out to you about those moments with your father when he was really near death?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was very precious.\u00a0 I think I knew how almost sacred that time was for us to be together in that room.\u00a0 My dad is a pretty independent guy, a pretty capable guy, and this was the first time that he ever really needed me, or I ever knew that he needed me.\u00a0 And so it was so wonderful for me to just sit beside him, hold his hand, talk him through the delirious experiences he was having with the drugs and put a cool cloth on his head.\u00a0 It was a really precious bonding time for us to be together.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If I had been talking with you a year before that event and just said to you, \u201cDescribe for me your relationship with your dad.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I loved him; he loved me.\u00a0 He was a Christian then.\u00a0 He became a Christian when I was a teenager, but I was busy.\u00a0 I was very busy thinking about teenage things and thinking about myself, and I don\u2019t think I ever realized how available he had become as a dad.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until that time in the hospital that he really needed me that I suddenly saw this very different man and really began to see my dad.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was just after that that my life really became difficult, and I was so grateful that we had bonded in this way and I could lean on him at that point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, what really blindsided me, Chuck, was not only did you start it talking about this very endearing relationship that you cultivated with Emily in the hospital, but it did cement your hearts together so much so there was another time when you said goodbye to her at the airport.\u00a0 You said you sobbed like a baby, and I\u2019m picturing Chuck Colson, and that\u2019s --\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 A pretty unlikely scene, isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 Yes, it was during Watergate.\u00a0 The hardest thing for me in Watergate \u2013 well, a lot of hard things.\u00a0 I mean, all of a sudden you\u2019ve had this meteoric rise in political power, and you\u2019re sitting in the office next to the President of the United States when I was 39 years old.\u00a0 That\u2019s pretty heady business.\u00a0 And suddenly you\u2019re public enemy number one, splashed across the headlines of the newspapers.\u00a0 Everything I\u2019d worked for building the Nixon administration is collapsing around me and I\u2019m thinking my whole world is collapsing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the worst thing is, you feel like you\u2019ve let down your kids and your family, and I was just agonizing over Emily, then 15 or 16, where kids were making fun of her because her father was this bad guy in the public eye.\u00a0 So when she came to Washington for a visit before I knew I was going to be sentenced, I wanted to get her home before the sentencing because I didn\u2019t want to put her through the courtroom experience.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I took her out to National Airport.\u00a0 This was before security.\u00a0 This is when you could walk down to the actual gangway to the plane, and as she started to turn away, I grabbed her.\u00a0 I said, \u201cEmily, I hope you\u2019re not ashamed of your father.\u00a0 I hope you\u2019re not embarrassed by what I\u2019ve done.\u201d\u00a0 And she looked at me with a quick and stern look and said, \u201cNo, Daddy.\u00a0 I am proud of you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe hugged and embraced, and I held it back until she got on the plane and I couldn\u2019t hold it back any more.\u00a0 I just stood there at National Airport, the White House Hatchet Man, the tough guy, ex-Marine Captain, and I was crying my eyes out, standing in the runway of that plane.\u00a0 Emily was flying back to Boston.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I wish our listeners could see the look on Emily\u2019s face right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I remember that hug.\u00a0 I remember it very well, and I remember it as a daughter, as a child.\u00a0 But now I see it as a parent myself, and I know what that was for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the other interesting thing that happened, Dennis, when Watergate was really crashing around me and I was given a chance to plea bargain \u2013 and plea bargain would mean that I could keep my license to practice law \u2013 I had to testify against Nixon the prosecutors told me, which I didn\u2019t want to do because he was my friend and I was loyal to him, but also what they wanted me to say wasn\u2019t true.\u00a0 But I asked the kids, I asked Wendell, Chris and Emily.\u00a0 Emily was the one who, when she heard it, turned to me and said, \u201cWell, did you do it Dad?\u00a0 Was it true?\u201d\u00a0 And I said, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 And she said, \u201cDon\u2019t say it was,\u201d just as tough as that.\u00a0 I mean, she knew what the stakes were and it affected her, as well, so I always admired that toughness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You actually described her as being \u201cmilitary tough.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe\u2019s holding her biceps at this point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, fathers want their sons to follow in their footsteps.\u00a0 I had loved being in the military, loved the Marine Corp, and I wanted my boys more than anything else to be Marines.\u00a0 Neither one did, but then I realized Emily turns out to be the one that\u2019s as tough as the Marine Lieutenant, not the boys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Emily, I\u2019m just curious what it was like as a teenager to read accounts in the newspaper about all these things your dad had been doing and wonder if they were true and hear what people were saying.\u00a0 For you to stand there and say, \u201cNo, Daddy, I\u2019m proud of you,\u201d \u2013 were you being comforting or were you really proud of your dad?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was proud of my dad, most definitely.\u00a0 I loved him, as much as we didn\u2019t have the kind of relationship that we have now, I loved him desperately.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a tough time.\u00a0 It was difficult to have a lot of people saying ugly things about someone that you love.\u00a0 It was a confusing time.\u00a0 There was so much media and attention, and it was confusing for me as a teenager to understand what was real, what wasn\u2019t real, but my dad was pretty clear about comforting us and telling us the truth.\u00a0 I know he told us the truth in what was going on, and I know that he was treated unfairly, so it was a complicated time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You ended up going away to college, then, and while at college, really you began your life in earnest by meeting a young man by the name of Gary.\u00a0 Can you share a little of how you met him and then started dating?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, when I went off to college, I think that something switched and that freedom was pretty enticing.\u00a0 Fortunately, by the grace of my parents there was another year that followed the first, but in many ways there shouldn\u2019t have been, considering \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You got a do-over, is what you\u2019re saying?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I got a do-over.\u00a0 I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were the grades that bad?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t even remember my grades.\u00a0 I just remember the parties.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it was an interesting time in life and met a young man there, and truthfully, I had no idea when I got to college how famous my dad was, until I arrived and every single person knew who I was and knew that I was coming to that school. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember telling this young man, Gary, how nice the school was.\u00a0 I was just so impressed with them.\u00a0 As he questioned me, he said, \u201cWell, why are they so nice?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cBecause they come and knock on your door every month and they ask you how you\u2019re doing, and the Dean comes by and checks on you.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cThey don\u2019t do that for anyone else, Emily.\u00a0 They\u2019re only doing that for you.\u201d\u00a0 I had no idea that I was getting all this special attention and special treatment because I was the same.\u00a0 I knew who I was, I was this girl like anybody else at the college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You thought the Dean just came by and took care of every student there, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Everyone.\u00a0 What a nice place!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But you met at that point, and you started dating Gary right away?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right away.\u00a0 Yes, I did, and we married as soon as I finished college, and sort of landed in this Norman Rockwell moment.\u00a0 Everything was lovely \u2013 a beautiful town in Massachusetts, had a great job, and everything was going beautifully.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When did the Norman Rockwell picture start to fade and look different for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think about five years into the marriage it suddenly started to look a little bit different.\u00a0 We hit some pretty trying times and life threw some curveballs as they say, and it put a great deal of strain on the marriage, a great deal of strain on our relationship, and it really wasn\u2019t strong enough to hold up.\u00a0 We did separate for a time, and then we reunited and felt that the relationship was stronger for it, that we understood each other better, and planned for Max.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there any spiritual foundation for your marriage?\u00a0 What had you done with your dad\u2019s profession of faith?\u00a0 How had that impacted you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, when I was in my mid-20s and life was really perfect, I began seeking.\u00a0 It\u2019s not the time you think of, but it was so lovely in that Norman Rockwell moment that I thought, \u201cIs this all there is?\u00a0 Isn\u2019t there something more to life?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew my dad\u2019s faith, understood that as much as I could as a non-believer, really, and started to read the Bible.\u00a0 I started with Revelation, which is kind of funny, but I loved it.\u00a0 As an artist I was so captivated.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cAll of this is in here and I never knew it?\u00a0 This is fantastic!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Why did you start with that book?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I thought I\u2019d \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 To see how it ends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 To see how the story ends, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly what I did.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWell, this is a big book.\u00a0 Why don\u2019t I just see how it all works out in the end?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was so captivated.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you aware, Chuck, of her spiritual interest at that point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not really until she came to the hospital and we spent that week together.\u00a0 I could see it was registering with Emily, and I think that was a time when you were really softening towards the Gospel \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 And understood it better.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Most definitely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 Although you had an experience in school.\u00a0 Tell that story; that\u2019s very appropriate.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh-h-h.\u00a0 I had a girl in high school that came right across the cafeteria, made a beeline at me.\u00a0 She was new in the school \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 She\u2019d heard about my conversion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 She\u2019d heard about your conversion, and she came over, and she had a little book on her hand, and it was folded over, open to a page, and she shoved it in my face and she said, \u201cWhich life do you have? \u201c\u00a0 I looked at the pictures, and there was one illustration with God in the center and everything else around it, and one illustration with me in the center and everything else and God way out on the perimeter, and I said,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think I\u2019ve seen that book you\u2019re talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Have you seen that one?\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thousands of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I bet you have.\u00a0 And I said, \u201cWell,\u201d -- you know it wasn\u2019t exactly an SAT question \u2013 \u201cI have the life with me in the center.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 And she said, \u201cWhich life do you want?\u201d and that\u2019s where it really convicted me.\u00a0 I looked at it and I thought, \u201cWell it really only makes sense to want the life with God in the center,\u201d so I pointed to the one with God in the center.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd she got kind of shaken \u2013 I think she was really surprised \u2013 and she said, \u201cWhy don\u2019t we go in another room, and we\u2019ll pray.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Well then I got a little nervous, thinking, \u201cWait a minute.\u00a0 I don\u2019t really know what I said, I don\u2019t really know what I did,\u201d but we went back to an empty classroom and she prayed for me, planted that seed in my mind.\u00a0 Of course, God knew, \u201cI have created Emily as an artist.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to show her pictures.\u201d\u00a0 So it really was the most perfect thing for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve thought often about that, because a lot of times we present the Gospel to people or we confront them with that, and we get rebuffed \u2013 we think we get rebuffed.\u00a0 We\u2019re not sure the message got through.\u00a0 You always can plant that seed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 And people should never be bashful about opportunities to do that, because it does lodge in the person\u2019s consciousness, just as it did with Emily.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 It did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you aware when she came to visit you in the hospital that there had been rough patches in her marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I don\u2019t think at that time I did.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t understand it then.\u00a0 Emily never talked to me about that.\u00a0 I thought that it was kind of an idyllic life that they were living, and she\u2019s married to this tall, dark, handsome guy, and everything\u2019s going to be perfect for her.\u00a0 The visits that Patty and I would have \u2013 it was all sweetness and light, so \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it <em>was<\/em> fine.\u00a0 I think it changed rather quickly when life got difficult.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re going to spend more time unpacking what that was, but for listeners who don\u2019t know, Max was born with autism, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, he was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were aware at birth that there was something different about Max?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 We knew there was something.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t have the diagnosis of autism, but it was clear:\u00a0 he didn\u2019t sleep, he cried all the time, he didn\u2019t make eye contact.\u00a0 At four months old I brought him into the doctors and said, \u201cWhy won\u2019t he look at me?\u201d\u00a0 He didn\u2019t babble, he didn\u2019t talk when he was supposed to, crawl, walk, -- any of those markers that we look for \u2013 so we knew something was different.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until he was four years old that we actually had a diagnosis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, after reading your book, Emily, I kept thinking about the themes that you\u2019ve written in here \u2013 and by the way, you really are a good storyteller.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love the honesty, the gritty honesty with which you tell your story.\u00a0 This is not some kind of veneer that you\u2019ve shared with folks.\u00a0 You take them into the tough spots of being, ultimately, a single parent mom raising an autistic son, and I really appreciate that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the book not only deals with Max, <em>Dancing with Max,<\/em> but it also has this theme of a father and a daughter and how there can be reconciliation in a powerful way that can cement their hearts to one another, even in the midst of some dark days.\u00a0 I\u2019m looking forward to hearing more of this story as we talk about it this guys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Emily, great to have you here as well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you so much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Emily is an artist, a writer \u2013 and by the way, you\u2019re going to like Barbara.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to have dinner a little later, but you\u2019re going to like her a lot because she\u2019s an artist as well.\u00a0 She is a single parent mom of a young man by the name of Max.\u00a0 You\u2019ll hear more about his story a little bit later.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tChuck Colson doesn\u2019t need a lot of introduction.\u00a0 He is an author, a speaker; he is the host of <em>Breakpoint<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hang on.\u00a0 He\u2019s Emily\u2019s dad.\u00a0 Let\u2019s get the important stuff \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s the biggest thing right there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He is Emily\u2019s father.\u00a0 He and his wife, Patty, have three children and five grandchildren and really, my first question is about the book <em>Dancing with Max<\/em>, which is the book that Emily has written.\u00a0 Honestly, Chuck, you really surprised me because in the prologue that you wrote for Emily\u2019s book you grabbed me by the heartstrings, immediately.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou made a statement \u2013 it was a transition statement in the book \u2013 I\u2019m going to let you set this up, but you said, \u201cThus began an experience that nearly cost me my life, but gained my daughter back.\u201d\u00a0 Powerful story!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, it was a powerful experience for me, because I was the guy that was always in a hurry.\u00a0 I was out to save the world when I was twelve years old.\u00a0 I was writing letters during World War II about selling war bonds and buying stuff for the troops.\u00a0 I\u2019ve always had this streak of idealism; that\u2019s what sent me into politics.\u00a0 When I was in the Marine Corp I was driven to be the Commander of the outfit, always getting to the top in things.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI didn\u2019t know what it was to be a dad.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t do a very good job, and Emily and I had particularly \u2013 we never really had that close of a relationship.\u00a0 I was in the Philippines when I started hemorrhaging, bleeding internally, and could have died because I made a foolish decision actually to fly home, and ended up in Georgetown Hospital with surgery.\u00a0 It didn\u2019t go well.\u00a0 It was infection, staph infection.\u00a0 I almost died there in the hospital.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tEmily moved down, came actually from Boston, and stayed in that room for eleven days, she and Patty.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think Emily ever left the room.\u00a0 We had the greatest relationship even though I was half delirious at times, because we just bonded close, very close.\u00a0 I ended up praying with Emily in the room and it was just a completely different relationship.\u00a0 Ever since that experience we\u2019ve been as close as a father and daughter could ever be.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This was how many years ago that this happened?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 This goes back to 1987 \u2013 a long time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Emily, what was your favorite moment during those eleven days?\u00a0 Was there one that really stands out to you about those moments with your father when he was really near death?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was very precious.\u00a0 I think I knew how almost sacred that time was for us to be together in that room.\u00a0 My dad is a pretty independent guy, a pretty capable guy, and this was the first time that he ever really needed me, or I ever knew that he needed me.\u00a0 And so it was so wonderful for me to just sit beside him, hold his hand, talk him through the delirious experiences he was having with the drugs and put a cool cloth on his head.\u00a0 It was a really precious bonding time for us to be together.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 If I had been talking with you a year before that event and just said to you, \u201cDescribe for me your relationship with your dad.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I loved him; he loved me.\u00a0 He was a Christian then.\u00a0 He became a Christian when I was a teenager, but I was busy.\u00a0 I was very busy thinking about teenage things and thinking about myself, and I don\u2019t think I ever realized how available he had become as a dad.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until that time in the hospital that he really needed me that I suddenly saw this very different man and really began to see my dad.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was just after that that my life really became difficult, and I was so grateful that we had bonded in this way and I could lean on him at that point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, what really blindsided me, Chuck, was not only did you start it talking about this very endearing relationship that you cultivated with Emily in the hospital, but it did cement your hearts together so much so there was another time when you said goodbye to her at the airport.\u00a0 You said you sobbed like a baby, and I\u2019m picturing Chuck Colson, and that\u2019s --\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 A pretty unlikely scene, isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 Yes, it was during Watergate.\u00a0 The hardest thing for me in Watergate \u2013 well, a lot of hard things.\u00a0 I mean, all of a sudden you\u2019ve had this meteoric rise in political power, and you\u2019re sitting in the office next to the President of the United States when I was 39 years old.\u00a0 That\u2019s pretty heady business.\u00a0 And suddenly you\u2019re public enemy number one, splashed across the headlines of the newspapers.\u00a0 Everything I\u2019d worked for building the Nixon administration is collapsing around me and I\u2019m thinking my whole world is collapsing.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think the worst thing is, you feel like you\u2019ve let down your kids and your family, and I was just agonizing over Emily, then 15 or 16, where kids were making fun of her because her father was this bad guy in the public eye.\u00a0 So when she came to Washington for a visit before I knew I was going to be sentenced, I wanted to get her home before the sentencing because I didn\u2019t want to put her through the courtroom experience.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo I took her out to National Airport.\u00a0 This was before security.\u00a0 This is when you could walk down to the actual gangway to the plane, and as she started to turn away, I grabbed her.\u00a0 I said, \u201cEmily, I hope you\u2019re not ashamed of your father.\u00a0 I hope you\u2019re not embarrassed by what I\u2019ve done.\u201d\u00a0 And she looked at me with a quick and stern look and said, \u201cNo, Daddy.\u00a0 I am proud of you.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe hugged and embraced, and I held it back until she got on the plane and I couldn\u2019t hold it back any more.\u00a0 I just stood there at National Airport, the White House Hatchet Man, the tough guy, ex-Marine Captain, and I was crying my eyes out, standing in the runway of that plane.\u00a0 Emily was flying back to Boston.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I wish our listeners could see the look on Emily\u2019s face right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I remember that hug.\u00a0 I remember it very well, and I remember it as a daughter, as a child.\u00a0 But now I see it as a parent myself, and I know what that was for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, the other interesting thing that happened, Dennis, when Watergate was really crashing around me and I was given a chance to plea bargain \u2013 and plea bargain would mean that I could keep my license to practice law \u2013 I had to testify against Nixon the prosecutors told me, which I didn\u2019t want to do because he was my friend and I was loyal to him, but also what they wanted me to say wasn\u2019t true.\u00a0 But I asked the kids, I asked Wendell, Chris and Emily.\u00a0 Emily was the one who, when she heard it, turned to me and said, \u201cWell, did you do it Dad?\u00a0 Was it true?\u201d\u00a0 And I said, \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 And she said, \u201cDon\u2019t say it was,\u201d just as tough as that.\u00a0 I mean, she knew what the stakes were and it affected her, as well, so I always admired that toughness.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You actually described her as being \u201cmilitary tough.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tShe\u2019s holding her biceps at this point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, fathers want their sons to follow in their footsteps.\u00a0 I had loved being in the military, loved the Marine Corp, and I wanted my boys more than anything else to be Marines.\u00a0 Neither one did, but then I realized Emily turns out to be the one that\u2019s as tough as the Marine Lieutenant, not the boys.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Emily, I\u2019m just curious what it was like as a teenager to read accounts in the newspaper about all these things your dad had been doing and wonder if they were true and hear what people were saying.\u00a0 For you to stand there and say, \u201cNo, Daddy, I\u2019m proud of you,\u201d \u2013 were you being comforting or were you really proud of your dad?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was proud of my dad, most definitely.\u00a0 I loved him, as much as we didn\u2019t have the kind of relationship that we have now, I loved him desperately.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was a tough time.\u00a0 It was difficult to have a lot of people saying ugly things about someone that you love.\u00a0 It was a confusing time.\u00a0 There was so much media and attention, and it was confusing for me as a teenager to understand what was real, what wasn\u2019t real, but my dad was pretty clear about comforting us and telling us the truth.\u00a0 I know he told us the truth in what was going on, and I know that he was treated unfairly, so it was a complicated time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You ended up going away to college, then, and while at college, really you began your life in earnest by meeting a young man by the name of Gary.\u00a0 Can you share a little of how you met him and then started dating?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, when I went off to college, I think that something switched and that freedom was pretty enticing.\u00a0 Fortunately, by the grace of my parents there was another year that followed the first, but in many ways there shouldn\u2019t have been, considering \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You got a do-over, is what you\u2019re saying?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I got a do-over.\u00a0 I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were the grades that bad?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t even remember my grades.\u00a0 I just remember the parties.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, it was an interesting time in life and met a young man there, and truthfully, I had no idea when I got to college how famous my dad was, until I arrived and every single person knew who I was and knew that I was coming to that school. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember telling this young man, Gary, how nice the school was.\u00a0 I was just so impressed with them.\u00a0 As he questioned me, he said, \u201cWell, why are they so nice?\u201d\u00a0 I said, \u201cBecause they come and knock on your door every month and they ask you how you\u2019re doing, and the Dean comes by and checks on you.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cThey don\u2019t do that for anyone else, Emily.\u00a0 They\u2019re only doing that for you.\u201d\u00a0 I had no idea that I was getting all this special attention and special treatment because I was the same.\u00a0 I knew who I was, I was this girl like anybody else at the college.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You thought the Dean just came by and took care of every student there, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Everyone.\u00a0 What a nice place!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But you met at that point, and you started dating Gary right away?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right away.\u00a0 Yes, I did, and we married as soon as I finished college, and sort of landed in this Norman Rockwell moment.\u00a0 Everything was lovely \u2013 a beautiful town in Massachusetts, had a great job, and everything was going beautifully.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When did the Norman Rockwell picture start to fade and look different for you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think about five years into the marriage it suddenly started to look a little bit different.\u00a0 We hit some pretty trying times and life threw some curveballs as they say, and it put a great deal of strain on the marriage, a great deal of strain on our relationship, and it really wasn\u2019t strong enough to hold up.\u00a0 We did separate for a time, and then we reunited and felt that the relationship was stronger for it, that we understood each other better, and planned for Max.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was there any spiritual foundation for your marriage?\u00a0 What had you done with your dad\u2019s profession of faith?\u00a0 How had that impacted you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, when I was in my mid-20s and life was really perfect, I began seeking.\u00a0 It\u2019s not the time you think of, but it was so lovely in that Norman Rockwell moment that I thought, \u201cIs this all there is?\u00a0 Isn\u2019t there something more to life?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI knew my dad\u2019s faith, understood that as much as I could as a non-believer, really, and started to read the Bible.\u00a0 I started with Revelation, which is kind of funny, but I loved it.\u00a0 As an artist I was so captivated.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cAll of this is in here and I never knew it?\u00a0 This is fantastic!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Why did you start with that book?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I thought I\u2019d \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 To see how it ends.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 To see how the story ends, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly what I did.\u00a0 I thought, \u201cWell, this is a big book.\u00a0 Why don\u2019t I just see how it all works out in the end?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was so captivated.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you aware, Chuck, of her spiritual interest at that point?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not really until she came to the hospital and we spent that week together.\u00a0 I could see it was registering with Emily, and I think that was a time when you were really softening towards the Gospel \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 And understood it better.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Most definitely.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 Although you had an experience in school.\u00a0 Tell that story; that\u2019s very appropriate.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh-h-h.\u00a0 I had a girl in high school that came right across the cafeteria, made a beeline at me.\u00a0 She was new in the school \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 She\u2019d heard about my conversion.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 She\u2019d heard about your conversion, and she came over, and she had a little book on her hand, and it was folded over, open to a page, and she shoved it in my face and she said, \u201cWhich life do you have? \u201c\u00a0 I looked at the pictures, and there was one illustration with God in the center and everything else around it, and one illustration with me in the center and everything else and God way out on the perimeter, and I said,\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think I\u2019ve seen that book you\u2019re talking about.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Have you seen that one?\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thousands of them.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 I bet you have.\u00a0 And I said, \u201cWell,\u201d -- you know it wasn\u2019t exactly an SAT question \u2013 \u201cI have the life with me in the center.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 And she said, \u201cWhich life do you want?\u201d and that\u2019s where it really convicted me.\u00a0 I looked at it and I thought, \u201cWell it really only makes sense to want the life with God in the center,\u201d so I pointed to the one with God in the center.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd she got kind of shaken \u2013 I think she was really surprised \u2013 and she said, \u201cWhy don\u2019t we go in another room, and we\u2019ll pray.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Well then I got a little nervous, thinking, \u201cWait a minute.\u00a0 I don\u2019t really know what I said, I don\u2019t really know what I did,\u201d but we went back to an empty classroom and she prayed for me, planted that seed in my mind.\u00a0 Of course, God knew, \u201cI have created Emily as an artist.\u00a0 I\u2019m going to show her pictures.\u201d\u00a0 So it really was the most perfect thing for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019ve thought often about that, because a lot of times we present the Gospel to people or we confront them with that, and we get rebuffed \u2013 we think we get rebuffed.\u00a0 We\u2019re not sure the message got through.\u00a0 You always can plant that seed.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 And people should never be bashful about opportunities to do that, because it does lodge in the person\u2019s consciousness, just as it did with Emily.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 It did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you aware when she came to visit you in the hospital that there had been rough patches in her marriage?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Chuck:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I don\u2019t think at that time I did.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t understand it then.\u00a0 Emily never talked to me about that.\u00a0 I thought that it was kind of an idyllic life that they were living, and she\u2019s married to this tall, dark, handsome guy, and everything\u2019s going to be perfect for her.\u00a0 The visits that Patty and I would have \u2013 it was all sweetness and light, so \u2013\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it <em>was<\/em> fine.\u00a0 I think it changed rather quickly when life got difficult.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re going to spend more time unpacking what that was, but for listeners who don\u2019t know, Max was born with autism, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, he was.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You were aware at birth that there was something different about Max?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 We knew there was something.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t have the diagnosis of autism, but it was clear:\u00a0 he didn\u2019t sleep, he cried all the time, he didn\u2019t make eye contact.\u00a0 At four months old I brought him into the doctors and said, \u201cWhy won\u2019t he look at me?\u201d\u00a0 He didn\u2019t babble, he didn\u2019t talk when he was supposed to, crawl, walk, -- any of those markers that we look for \u2013 so we knew something was different.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t until he was four years old that we actually had a diagnosis.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, after reading your book, Emily, I kept thinking about the themes that you\u2019ve written in here \u2013 and by the way, you really are a good storyteller.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Emily:<\/strong>\u00a0 Thank you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I love the honesty, the gritty honesty with which you tell your story.\u00a0 This is not some kind of veneer that you\u2019ve shared with folks.\u00a0 You take them into the tough spots of being, ultimately, a single parent mom raising an autistic son, and I really appreciate that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut the book not only deals with Max, <em>Dancing with Max,<\/em> but it also has this theme of a father and a daughter and how there can be reconciliation in a powerful way that can cement their hearts
