<\/strong>\u00a0Talk about a man as a protector.\u00a0 I mean, in today\u2019s world I don\u2019t carry a sword to work.\u00a0 So, what is my\u2014I\u2019m not packing heat today.\u00a0 What does protector look like?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Today?\u00a0 Did you pack it tomorrow? \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You never know.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Two weeks ago, I spoke at a youth retreat.\u00a0 Here is how I put it to teenage boys: If you are on a date with a young lady, your first priority is her well being.\u00a0 You are not there for warm feelings for you because you are a Christian.\u00a0 You are not there just to have a good time.\u00a0 Her well being\u2014God has placed her under your care.\u00a0 Your number one priority is that her body and her soul and her heart are kept safe.\u00a0 That is the biblical perspective of manhood.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBoaz, now there is a real man for you.\u00a0 He looks upon Ruth and he has her well being and he is going to take action.\u00a0 Even before he interacts with her, he is going to do what is right to make sure that she is taken care of.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, a biblical man is one who not just kind of shows up and beats his chests; and if there is an assailant there, he steps forward, that may be true.\u00a0 But one who also is in the mode of watching over.\u00a0 Psalm 121, \u201cThe Lord keeps your soul.\u00a0 The Lord watches over Israel.\u201d\u00a0 We are those who watch over and keep things safe precious things that God has placed in our care.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rick, I wrote a book called <em>Interviewing Your Daughter\u2019s Date<\/em>.\u00a0 Now, if you talk about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you packing heat?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I had a baseball bat.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That is what he used.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was called the \u201cRespect-her.\u201d\u00a0 Okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alright.\u00a0 I had a friend who read that book who actually did what you are talking about.\u00a0 He was being a man with his daughters.\u00a0 He had a couple of daughters who went to the prom, and he called both of the boys in to meet with him prior to going to the prom.\u00a0 He looked them in the eye; and he said to them, \u201cIf there was a terrorist that broke into the prom and began to shoot people, I want you boys to know, you young men, as you take my daughters out to the prom I expect you to take a bullet on behalf of my daughter.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cYou know, it was kind of interesting.\u201d\u00a0 It not only shocked and stunned them that here was an older man kind of commissioning them with their assignment for the evening to protect his daughter.\u00a0 But he also said, \u201cThey kind of stood up a little taller in the seat and bowed up as men being commissioned by an older man\u201d to assume what you are calling their God given responsibility.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if he did this.\u00a0 He could have gone on and said if there is some other guy at the prom, because the terrorist is probably not going to show up, but if there is some other guy at the prom who starts acting untoward, I expect you to get in the middle and stop it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or teasing.\u00a0 Let me give you a story from my own family.\u00a0 Just a few years ago when my boys were a little younger, my boys were ten and twelve.\u00a0 They were maybe three years younger, so maybe what six and nine\u2014and eight.\u00a0 When my older son and my younger son were playing across the street, my younger son came home crying.\u00a0 I asked, \u201cWhat happened?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt turned out that one of the boys that they were playing with had struck him on the head.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t hurt him, but he hurt his feelings; and they, basically, ran him off.\u00a0 So, I said, \u201cWhere was your older brother?\u201d\u00a0 Well, he was there.\u00a0 By the way now, my older son is a fine young man who I am very proud of.\u00a0 But this was an episode in which I was able to raise him as a man, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 A little correction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, I went across the street.\u00a0 When they saw me, it was like \u201cuh-oh\u201d there he is.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI only want to talk to one person, my oldest son.\u201d\u00a0 I asked him, I said, \u201cWhy did you not protect and defend your brother?\u201d\u00a0 What did he tell me? \u201cWhy did you not physically defend your brother?\u201d\u00a0 Because I\u2019m a Christian.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 When Jesus says turn the other cheek; He is talking about people assaulting you, not assaulting others.\u00a0 I said, \u201cNext time\u2014let me tell you something, young Christian man.\u00a0 How would you feel if another man on the street struck you, and I walked away?\u201d\u00a0 Well, I wouldn\u2019t feel very good.\u00a0 Well, it would never happen.\u00a0 I expect you to have bloody knuckles.\u00a0 I am not telling him to be a fighter, but you physically sacrifice yourself to protect your younger brother.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAbout six months later, I was travelling somewhere preaching, and they had a little league game.\u00a0 There was a man at the little league field stalking my wife, and my older son visited him with an aluminum baseball bat in his hands.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 He is like nine years old.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019ve been following my mother, and I want to advise you to stop doing that.\u201d\u00a0 Now that is not bullies; that is not people who long to fight.\u00a0 But it is inculcating an attitude of responsibility for the safe keeping of those whom God has placed under our care.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is not just the safe keeping from the enemies outside, but a real man has to be on guard against the evil inclinations of his own heart and protect others from the evil that lurks inside of him.\u00a0 Don\u2019t we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know that is especially true in marriage.\u00a0 The greatest danger facing our wives is our sin.\u00a0 I had a friend who was pastoring that had normal marital problems, typically things; and I was ministering the word of God.\u00a0 I was reading Ephesians 5 and teaching him that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe came to me one day; and he said, \u201cYou know, the Bible says I\u2019m to be willing to die for her as Christ died for me.\u00a0 If I should take the bullet, he said but I realized that\u2014I thought this way\u2014\u201d Here is how he put it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cI thought if a man came into my house with a knife and were going to attack my wife, I would stand before him.\u00a0 Then I realized that I am the man who comes into my house in my attitude and the way I speak to her and the way I treat her is destroying her.\u00a0 I have to be willing to put to death my sins if she is going to be safe.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, as you were talking, Rick, I was thinking the word that we\u2019re talking about here: A man being a keeper, a keeper of his wife.\u00a0 My mind runs to the New Testament in Ephesians 5 where it talks about a man nourishing and cherishing his wife.\u00a0 It is basically loving his wife with self denying, sacrificial love, giving of himself to protect her, and also help her to grow as a woman. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 It really is the masculine mandate.\u00a0 The biblical calling on men to work and keep you\u2019ll see it played out in marriage.\u00a0 Peter, 1 Peter 3:7\u2014very much like Paul in Ephesians 5\u2014\u201cLive with your wives according to the knowledge, cherishing her.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is the working, it is the nurturing.\u00a0 Men know your wives.\u00a0 Pay attention to your wives.\u00a0 We don\u2019t pay attention to our wives.\u00a0 We need to repent of that.\u00a0 We need to be instructed by the Bible.\u00a0 Then, minister aggressively to your wife and then keep her safe.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was doing a Bible study for a group of presidents of companies over the phone.\u00a0 In fact, Bob, I think you and I did this together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I remember this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did three sessions.\u00a0 Bob did three sessions.\u00a0 These were all really good guys.\u00a0 They were in the Scriptures.\u00a0 They were trying to be Christ followers.\u00a0 I will never forget though to this very point you are talking about here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI asked those guys to go around the circle.\u00a0 Actually, it was around the nation, okay, because there were a number of states represented by the men that were on the phone there.\u00a0 I said, \u201cAnswer this question: Right now, what are your wife\u2019s top three needs?\u201d\u00a0 It was like I had electrocuted those guys, stunned them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Anybody still on the line here?\u00a0 Hello?\u00a0 Hello?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 I am going to give a simple technique for learning this; so, men get out a pencil and paper.\u00a0 It is two words: Ask them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 You want to know how to nurture your wife, ask her.\u00a0 She will tell you how to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is exactly what ended up happening.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t get much, much interaction on the question.\u00a0 So, I said, \u201cOkay.\u00a0 Here is the assignment out of this week\u2019s Bible study.\u00a0 I want you to go home, and do not, do not\u2014I repeat for a third time\u2014do not go in and say, \u2018Well, I was on this Bible study call and the guy who is leading it said I had to ask you what your three needs are.\u2019 No, no, no.\u00a0 That is not the way to get a point guys.\u00a0 You don\u2019t get any points for that kind of a question.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGo in and say, \u201cSweetheart, I really do want to understand what your needs are right now.\u00a0 Would you give it some thought?\u00a0 Then, after we\u2019ve put the kids to bed or a little later on in the evening, would you just jot down and tell me what are your top three needs.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I am talking to some men right now, who are husbands, maybe your wife is listening, too.\u00a0 I am sorry if that is the case because you are under tremendous pressure right now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you get home and ask the question tonight, if your wife just starts to smile real big, it is probably because she was listening to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 She may send her donations to the following phone number.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is exactly right.\u00a0 Here is what you need to do.\u00a0 You need to say, \u201cSweetheart, I really do want to know.\u00a0 We can laugh about this, but I really do want to know what are your top three needs.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is what a guy needs to understand when he does that.\u00a0 To be the keeper of your wife doesn\u2019t mean that you ask this question this year; and then, you don\u2019t ask it for another decade.\u00a0 I mean, this is a seasonal deal.\u00a0 Your wife\u2019s needs change daily if not weekly, monthly, throughout the year.\u00a0 Revisit the question quite frequently in different ways so you can be a true man and a keeper of your wife.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is a modus operandi.\u00a0 We live this way.\u00a0 If you do that, Dennis, what you are going to have to do is have medical equipment on by because the first time you do it, she is going to faint.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Smelling salts better be right there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is going to enrich her heart.\u00a0 She was made by God to respond.\u00a0 How many people have marital conflict, and at least part of it is the woman has dried up inside because her husband pays no attention to her?\u00a0 He is far more interested in the Red Sox\/Yankees series.\u00a0 How many times has my wife gone to bed alone because it was the ninth inning?\u00a0 How much better for me to be more interested or at least just as interested in her than I am with my toys and all the things going on in my life of that nature.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen a man takes an interest in her and says, \u201cI\u2019m going to make it my joyful duty to build you up and minister to you,\u201d he is going to get some affection.\u00a0 It may take some time, but God has designed our wives to respond to that.\u00a0 It will greatly help our marriages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rick, the guy who goes home tonight and does what Dennis said, \u201cHoney, what are your three greatest needs?\u201d\u00a0 She goes, \u201cWell, I am glad you asked because I have had a list and it is longer than three.\u00a0 It starts with what I\u2019ve been saying to you about that pile in the backyard.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been wanting that picked up, and you said you\u2019d do it and you haven\u2019t done it.\u201d\u00a0 He is just going, \u201cThat is the last time I am going to ask that question.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 He needs to man and to persevere.\u00a0 He may say to me, \u201cPastor, my wife is just porcupine creature, and it is just not easy to get close to her.\u201d\u00a0 I say, \u201cWhat is a little blood on the hands between you and me?\u00a0 You be the man.\u00a0 You start building.\u00a0 She does need to repent maybe.\u00a0 Maybe her attitude is not right, but it is probably in part resentment from the emotional and spiritual neglect of a husband who has not been keeping her.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cSo, persevere, my friend.\u00a0 I really want to encourage you here is the good news:\u00a0 God has made her\u2014and I\u2019ve seen it over and over\u2014He has made her to respond.\u00a0 God sovereignly blesses obedience.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUltimately, we do this not to just have great marriages and because we love our wives; we honor and glorify our Lord and we give a living witness to the world around us and you will have the help of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 Don\u2019t worry about it, He\u2019ll change her\u2014I\u2019m presuming you married a Christian woman.\u00a0 You ask her, \u201cWhat makes you feel ministered to by me, and what makes you feel safe?\u201d\u00a0 You do it out of love.\u00a0 Look, she can\u2019t keep it up.\u00a0 She is made by God to respond in love toward this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, but it isn\u2019t the flipping of the switch.\u00a0 I mean, it is just not going to happen instantly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Perseverance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the places I\u2019ve often wanted to be on a Sunday afternoon as couples are leaving our <em>Weekend to Remember\u00ae<\/em> marriage getaways that we are hosting all across the country.\u00a0 We are going to have 137 of them this year.\u00a0 The reason I would like to be a little bug in the car as they are driving away from the hotel, as the man turns to his wife and begins to apply some of what he has heard in the \u201cmen only\u201d session that we lead there for an hour and a half.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, that session drives the women crazy because they want to be in there with their husbands hearing the marching orders that the guys are getting, but we separate them.\u00a0 The wives get their own orders.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Everybody, let\u2019s read their own mail.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is exactly right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 The husbands are experts on the submission of wives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 So, we\u2019ve given it to the guys straight on some of these tools and really training exercises.\u00a0 I would love to be in that car at the moment as they are driving away, and he finally screws up the courage to turn to his wife; and he goes, \u201cWell, kind of would like to know, what are those, those needs of yours that we talked about?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI am sure it is probably butchered.\u00a0 It is probably mishandled by many men, but you know here is the thing that a guy needs to understand: A man who is even clumsy at attempting to minister to his wife\u2019s heart is a big time winner because as you said our wives were made by God to be like sponges that soak up that sacrificial love, that caring, nourishing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They are designed as responders.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They are.\u00a0 They are.\u00a0 When a man is attempting to be a spiritual man, even in a small matter or it may be a big matter for a man, to pray with her and to say, \u201cI\u2019d like to take your hand and may I pray for you and what you just shared with me.\u201d\u00a0 Those are really the payoff moments for a man.\u00a0 It is when that marriage certificate that is probably in some lock box actually begins to be transformed into a real marriage between two real people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is right.\u00a0 As men, let\u2019s lead.\u00a0 It is true that your wife has sins, and she has probably not respected you the way the Bible tells her to.\u00a0 She has probably sinned in her speech that is the way it tends to work.\u00a0 Let the Lord take care of that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m not there to change my wife; I\u2019m there to love my wife.\u00a0 She is a Christian woman; the Holy Spirit is working in her life.\u00a0 Let\u2019s us take the lead.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got a marriage that is stuck?\u00a0 Will you work?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is what I want to do in the book from Genesis 2:15.\u00a0 Folks, it is simple.\u00a0 It is not easy\u2014not therefore, easy, but work and keep.\u00a0 Minister and keep safe.\u00a0 Start doing it.\u00a0 God will bless it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, Rick, we\u2019ve been talking about how to do it right.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t talked to your wife, haven\u2019t called her; but you\u2019ve had to have blown it.\u00a0 You have to have some colossal, major mistakes because you are a strong guy; and when you make a mistake, it is not going to be a little one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well\u2026.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are shaking your head.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, no this is true.\u00a0 I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are agreeing with me.\u00a0 Alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Share one.\u00a0 Because there are guys listening to this right now and they are going, Bob Lepine is a little snippy in the morning when he gets up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis does this and that.\u00a0 I can\u2019t relate to those guys they\u2019re too perfect.\u00a0 So, give us\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick: <\/strong>\u00a0I think the biggest thing for me is that God has given me a great passion for work.\u00a0 There are things in my work life that I\u2019m very passionate for: my church.\u00a0 I write a lot books.\u00a0 I travel and speak.\u00a0 It is very easy for me to get caught up in that and lose track of my wife and that part of my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Like not know where she is?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Lose track with her, what do you mean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m the kind of person who sometimes I get in places where the weight of the responsibility that is on me is so great I feel like I\u2019m about to be crushed.\u00a0 Just prayerfully bearing the obligations and trying to meet the expectations, this is what men feel.\u00a0 The expectations are more than I can do.\u00a0 So, we begin to focus on our work too much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, what happens in your marriage?\u00a0 Give me a specific illustration.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I don\u2019t know if I want to.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know you don\u2019t, but that is why I want you to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, honestly, I am blessed with a very godly wife.\u00a0 It becomes hard for her, and it will become hard for every woman.\u00a0 It will start to affect her attitude.\u00a0 It will for every woman.\u00a0 When that happens as a man\u2014here is what happens.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen God came to Adam in the Garden and He said, \u201cWhy did you eat of the tree?\u201d\u00a0 Adam became the first in a long line of two fingered, male blame shifters.\u00a0 The woman you gave me that was my problem.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if my wife is struggling emotionally and maybe in her relationship in me, it is very easy for me to start thinking of how bad she is and what she is doing wrong.\u00a0 Fortunately, I read my Bible, and I go, \u201cYou know, Rick\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 Honestly, it is almost always attributed to my emotional neglect of her life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m passionate about everything.\u00a0 I am a big time Boston Red Sox\u2019s fan.\u00a0 It is very easy for me to be caught up in things and lose track of where she is emotionally.\u00a0 To be in a social setting and the demand\u2014people want to talk to me, I\u2019ve got things I\u2019m trying\u2014I\u2019ve got balls in the air.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you know she is the precious wife whom God has given me.\u00a0 I should tell you, God has given me the desire of my heart in a godly woman.\u00a0 Yet, isn\u2019t this sad that I have to be biblically rebuked and commanded to love my wife?\u00a0 Women have to be told to respect their husbands.\u00a0 That is bad enough.\u00a0 We have to be commanded to love our wives because sin is always going to pull men outward.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe flesh is going to pull man\u2014what are males\u2019 sins: pride, lust, all those sorts of things.\u00a0 Female sins are resentment, anxiety, fear.\u00a0 Well, like every other man, I can be pulled out into the world, all the responsibilities and opportunities.\u00a0 God wants me to love my wife and to be a faithful husband.\u00a0 We haven\u2019t even talked about children yet.\u00a0 God wants me to be faithful in those duties, and I really do, too.\u00a0 But I have this flesh problem.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Boston Red Sox is that what you said?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was going recommend people get a copy of your book, but not anymore.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 I spoke at a youth retreat.\u00a0 Here is how I put it to teenage boys: If you are on a date with a young lady, your first priority is her well being.\u00a0 You are not there for warm feelings for you because you are a Christian.\u00a0 You are not there just to have a good time.\u00a0 Her well being\u2014God has placed her under your care.\u00a0 Your number one priority is that her body and her soul and her heart are kept safe.\u00a0 That is the biblical perspective of manhood.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBoaz, now there is a real man for you.\u00a0 He looks upon Ruth and he has her well being and he is going to take action.\u00a0 Even before he interacts with her, he is going to do what is right to make sure that she is taken care of.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, a biblical man is one who not just kind of shows up and beats his chests; and if there is an assailant there, he steps forward, that may be true.\u00a0 But one who also is in the mode of watching over.\u00a0 Psalm 121, \u201cThe Lord keeps your soul.\u00a0 The Lord watches over Israel.\u201d\u00a0 We are those who watch over and keep things safe precious things that God has placed in our care.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rick, I wrote a book called <em>Interviewing Your Daughter\u2019s Date<\/em>.\u00a0 Now, if you talk about\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Were you packing heat?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I had a baseball bat.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 That is what he used.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was called the \u201cRespect-her.\u201d\u00a0 Okay?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Alright.\u00a0 I had a friend who read that book who actually did what you are talking about.\u00a0 He was being a man with his daughters.\u00a0 He had a couple of daughters who went to the prom, and he called both of the boys in to meet with him prior to going to the prom.\u00a0 He looked them in the eye; and he said to them, \u201cIf there was a terrorist that broke into the prom and began to shoot people, I want you boys to know, you young men, as you take my daughters out to the prom I expect you to take a bullet on behalf of my daughter.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cYou know, it was kind of interesting.\u201d\u00a0 It not only shocked and stunned them that here was an older man kind of commissioning them with their assignment for the evening to protect his daughter.\u00a0 But he also said, \u201cThey kind of stood up a little taller in the seat and bowed up as men being commissioned by an older man\u201d to assume what you are calling their God given responsibility.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know if he did this.\u00a0 He could have gone on and said if there is some other guy at the prom, because the terrorist is probably not going to show up, but if there is some other guy at the prom who starts acting untoward, I expect you to get in the middle and stop it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or teasing.\u00a0 Let me give you a story from my own family.\u00a0 Just a few years ago when my boys were a little younger, my boys were ten and twelve.\u00a0 They were maybe three years younger, so maybe what six and nine\u2014and eight.\u00a0 When my older son and my younger son were playing across the street, my younger son came home crying.\u00a0 I asked, \u201cWhat happened?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt turned out that one of the boys that they were playing with had struck him on the head.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t hurt him, but he hurt his feelings; and they, basically, ran him off.\u00a0 So, I said, \u201cWhere was your older brother?\u201d\u00a0 Well, he was there.\u00a0 By the way now, my older son is a fine young man who I am very proud of.\u00a0 But this was an episode in which I was able to raise him as a man, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 A little correction.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, I went across the street.\u00a0 When they saw me, it was like \u201cuh-oh\u201d there he is.\u00a0 I said, \u201cI only want to talk to one person, my oldest son.\u201d\u00a0 I asked him, I said, \u201cWhy did you not protect and defend your brother?\u201d\u00a0 What did he tell me? \u201cWhy did you not physically defend your brother?\u201d\u00a0 Because I\u2019m a Christian.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Yes.\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 When Jesus says turn the other cheek; He is talking about people assaulting you, not assaulting others.\u00a0 I said, \u201cNext time\u2014let me tell you something, young Christian man.\u00a0 How would you feel if another man on the street struck you, and I walked away?\u201d\u00a0 Well, I wouldn\u2019t feel very good.\u00a0 Well, it would never happen.\u00a0 I expect you to have bloody knuckles.\u00a0 I am not telling him to be a fighter, but you physically sacrifice yourself to protect your younger brother.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAbout six months later, I was travelling somewhere preaching, and they had a little league game.\u00a0 There was a man at the little league field stalking my wife, and my older son visited him with an aluminum baseball bat in his hands.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 He is like nine years old.\u00a0 \u201cYou\u2019ve been following my mother, and I want to advise you to stop doing that.\u201d\u00a0 Now that is not bullies; that is not people who long to fight.\u00a0 But it is inculcating an attitude of responsibility for the safe keeping of those whom God has placed under our care.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is not just the safe keeping from the enemies outside, but a real man has to be on guard against the evil inclinations of his own heart and protect others from the evil that lurks inside of him.\u00a0 Don\u2019t we?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know that is especially true in marriage.\u00a0 The greatest danger facing our wives is our sin.\u00a0 I had a friend who was pastoring that had normal marital problems, typically things; and I was ministering the word of God.\u00a0 I was reading Ephesians 5 and teaching him that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe came to me one day; and he said, \u201cYou know, the Bible says I\u2019m to be willing to die for her as Christ died for me.\u00a0 If I should take the bullet, he said but I realized that\u2014I thought this way\u2014\u201d Here is how he put it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cI thought if a man came into my house with a knife and were going to attack my wife, I would stand before him.\u00a0 Then I realized that I am the man who comes into my house in my attitude and the way I speak to her and the way I treat her is destroying her.\u00a0 I have to be willing to put to death my sins if she is going to be safe.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, as you were talking, Rick, I was thinking the word that we\u2019re talking about here: A man being a keeper, a keeper of his wife.\u00a0 My mind runs to the New Testament in Ephesians 5 where it talks about a man nourishing and cherishing his wife.\u00a0 It is basically loving his wife with self denying, sacrificial love, giving of himself to protect her, and also help her to grow as a woman. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 It really is the masculine mandate.\u00a0 The biblical calling on men to work and keep you\u2019ll see it played out in marriage.\u00a0 Peter, 1 Peter 3:7\u2014very much like Paul in Ephesians 5\u2014\u201cLive with your wives according to the knowledge, cherishing her.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is the working, it is the nurturing.\u00a0 Men know your wives.\u00a0 Pay attention to your wives.\u00a0 We don\u2019t pay attention to our wives.\u00a0 We need to repent of that.\u00a0 We need to be instructed by the Bible.\u00a0 Then, minister aggressively to your wife and then keep her safe.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was doing a Bible study for a group of presidents of companies over the phone.\u00a0 In fact, Bob, I think you and I did this together.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I remember this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I did three sessions.\u00a0 Bob did three sessions.\u00a0 These were all really good guys.\u00a0 They were in the Scriptures.\u00a0 They were trying to be Christ followers.\u00a0 I will never forget though to this very point you are talking about here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI asked those guys to go around the circle.\u00a0 Actually, it was around the nation, okay, because there were a number of states represented by the men that were on the phone there.\u00a0 I said, \u201cAnswer this question: Right now, what are your wife\u2019s top three needs?\u201d\u00a0 It was like I had electrocuted those guys, stunned them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Anybody still on the line here?\u00a0 Hello?\u00a0 Hello?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 I am going to give a simple technique for learning this; so, men get out a pencil and paper.\u00a0 It is two words: Ask them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 You want to know how to nurture your wife, ask her.\u00a0 She will tell you how to do it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is exactly what ended up happening.\u00a0 We didn\u2019t get much, much interaction on the question.\u00a0 So, I said, \u201cOkay.\u00a0 Here is the assignment out of this week\u2019s Bible study.\u00a0 I want you to go home, and do not, do not\u2014I repeat for a third time\u2014do not go in and say, \u2018Well, I was on this Bible study call and the guy who is leading it said I had to ask you what your three needs are.\u2019 No, no, no.\u00a0 That is not the way to get a point guys.\u00a0 You don\u2019t get any points for that kind of a question.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tGo in and say, \u201cSweetheart, I really do want to understand what your needs are right now.\u00a0 Would you give it some thought?\u00a0 Then, after we\u2019ve put the kids to bed or a little later on in the evening, would you just jot down and tell me what are your top three needs.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I am talking to some men right now, who are husbands, maybe your wife is listening, too.\u00a0 I am sorry if that is the case because you are under tremendous pressure right now.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 When you get home and ask the question tonight, if your wife just starts to smile real big, it is probably because she was listening to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 She may send her donations to the following phone number.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is exactly right.\u00a0 Here is what you need to do.\u00a0 You need to say, \u201cSweetheart, I really do want to know.\u00a0 We can laugh about this, but I really do want to know what are your top three needs.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is what a guy needs to understand when he does that.\u00a0 To be the keeper of your wife doesn\u2019t mean that you ask this question this year; and then, you don\u2019t ask it for another decade.\u00a0 I mean, this is a seasonal deal.\u00a0 Your wife\u2019s needs change daily if not weekly, monthly, throughout the year.\u00a0 Revisit the question quite frequently in different ways so you can be a true man and a keeper of your wife.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is a modus operandi.\u00a0 We live this way.\u00a0 If you do that, Dennis, what you are going to have to do is have medical equipment on by because the first time you do it, she is going to faint.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Smelling salts better be right there. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is going to enrich her heart.\u00a0 She was made by God to respond.\u00a0 How many people have marital conflict, and at least part of it is the woman has dried up inside because her husband pays no attention to her?\u00a0 He is far more interested in the Red Sox\/Yankees series.\u00a0 How many times has my wife gone to bed alone because it was the ninth inning?\u00a0 How much better for me to be more interested or at least just as interested in her than I am with my toys and all the things going on in my life of that nature.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen a man takes an interest in her and says, \u201cI\u2019m going to make it my joyful duty to build you up and minister to you,\u201d he is going to get some affection.\u00a0 It may take some time, but God has designed our wives to respond to that.\u00a0 It will greatly help our marriages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Rick, the guy who goes home tonight and does what Dennis said, \u201cHoney, what are your three greatest needs?\u201d\u00a0 She goes, \u201cWell, I am glad you asked because I have had a list and it is longer than three.\u00a0 It starts with what I\u2019ve been saying to you about that pile in the backyard.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been wanting that picked up, and you said you\u2019d do it and you haven\u2019t done it.\u201d\u00a0 He is just going, \u201cThat is the last time I am going to ask that question.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 He needs to man and to persevere.\u00a0 He may say to me, \u201cPastor, my wife is just porcupine creature, and it is just not easy to get close to her.\u201d\u00a0 I say, \u201cWhat is a little blood on the hands between you and me?\u00a0 You be the man.\u00a0 You start building.\u00a0 She does need to repent maybe.\u00a0 Maybe her attitude is not right, but it is probably in part resentment from the emotional and spiritual neglect of a husband who has not been keeping her.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cSo, persevere, my friend.\u00a0 I really want to encourage you here is the good news:\u00a0 God has made her\u2014and I\u2019ve seen it over and over\u2014He has made her to respond.\u00a0 God sovereignly blesses obedience.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tUltimately, we do this not to just have great marriages and because we love our wives; we honor and glorify our Lord and we give a living witness to the world around us and you will have the help of the Holy Spirit.\u00a0 Don\u2019t worry about it, He\u2019ll change her\u2014I\u2019m presuming you married a Christian woman.\u00a0 You ask her, \u201cWhat makes you feel ministered to by me, and what makes you feel safe?\u201d\u00a0 You do it out of love.\u00a0 Look, she can\u2019t keep it up.\u00a0 She is made by God to respond in love toward this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, but it isn\u2019t the flipping of the switch.\u00a0 I mean, it is just not going to happen instantly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Perseverance.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the places I\u2019ve often wanted to be on a Sunday afternoon as couples are leaving our <em>Weekend to Remember\u00ae<\/em> marriage getaways that we are hosting all across the country.\u00a0 We are going to have 137 of them this year.\u00a0 The reason I would like to be a little bug in the car as they are driving away from the hotel, as the man turns to his wife and begins to apply some of what he has heard in the \u201cmen only\u201d session that we lead there for an hour and a half.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, that session drives the women crazy because they want to be in there with their husbands hearing the marching orders that the guys are getting, but we separate them.\u00a0 The wives get their own orders.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Everybody, let\u2019s read their own mail.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is exactly right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 The husbands are experts on the submission of wives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 So, we\u2019ve given it to the guys straight on some of these tools and really training exercises.\u00a0 I would love to be in that car at the moment as they are driving away, and he finally screws up the courage to turn to his wife; and he goes, \u201cWell, kind of would like to know, what are those, those needs of yours that we talked about?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI am sure it is probably butchered.\u00a0 It is probably mishandled by many men, but you know here is the thing that a guy needs to understand: A man who is even clumsy at attempting to minister to his wife\u2019s heart is a big time winner because as you said our wives were made by God to be like sponges that soak up that sacrificial love, that caring, nourishing\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 They are designed as responders.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 They are.\u00a0 They are.\u00a0 When a man is attempting to be a spiritual man, even in a small matter or it may be a big matter for a man, to pray with her and to say, \u201cI\u2019d like to take your hand and may I pray for you and what you just shared with me.\u201d\u00a0 Those are really the payoff moments for a man.\u00a0 It is when that marriage certificate that is probably in some lock box actually begins to be transformed into a real marriage between two real people.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is right.\u00a0 As men, let\u2019s lead.\u00a0 It is true that your wife has sins, and she has probably not respected you the way the Bible tells her to.\u00a0 She has probably sinned in her speech that is the way it tends to work.\u00a0 Let the Lord take care of that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m not there to change my wife; I\u2019m there to love my wife.\u00a0 She is a Christian woman; the Holy Spirit is working in her life.\u00a0 Let\u2019s us take the lead.\u00a0 You\u2019ve got a marriage that is stuck?\u00a0 Will you work?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is what I want to do in the book from Genesis 2:15.\u00a0 Folks, it is simple.\u00a0 It is not easy\u2014not therefore, easy, but work and keep.\u00a0 Minister and keep safe.\u00a0 Start doing it.\u00a0 God will bless it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, Rick, we\u2019ve been talking about how to do it right.\u00a0 I haven\u2019t talked to your wife, haven\u2019t called her; but you\u2019ve had to have blown it.\u00a0 You have to have some colossal, major mistakes because you are a strong guy; and when you make a mistake, it is not going to be a little one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well\u2026.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are shaking your head.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, no this is true.\u00a0 I mean\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are agreeing with me.\u00a0 Alright.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Sure.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Share one.\u00a0 Because there are guys listening to this right now and they are going, Bob Lepine is a little snippy in the morning when he gets up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDennis does this and God has given me a great passion for work.\u00a0 There are things in my work life that I\u2019m very passionate for: my church.\u00a0 I write a lot books.\u00a0 I travel and speak.\u00a0 It is very easy for me to get caught up in that and lose track of my wife and that part of my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Like not know where she is?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Lose track with her, what do you mean?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m the kind of person who sometimes I get in places where the weight of the responsibility that is on me is so great I feel like I\u2019m about to be crushed.\u00a0 Just prayerfully bearing the obligations and trying to meet the expectations, this is what men feel.\u00a0 The expectations are more than I can do.\u00a0 So, we begin to focus on our work too much.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So, what happens in your marriage?\u00a0 Give me a specific illustration.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I don\u2019t know if I want to.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I know you don\u2019t, but that is why I want you to.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, honestly, I am blessed with a very godly wife.\u00a0 It becomes hard for her, and it will become hard for every woman.\u00a0 It will start to affect her attitude.\u00a0 It will for every woman.\u00a0 When that happens as a man\u2014here is what happens.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen God came to Adam in the Garden and He said, \u201cWhy did you eat of the tree?\u201d\u00a0 Adam became the first in a long line of two fingered, male blame shifters.\u00a0 The woman you gave me that was my problem.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, if my wife is struggling emotionally and maybe in her relationship in me, it is very easy for me to start thinking of how bad she is and what she is doing wrong.\u00a0 Fortunately, I read my Bible, and I go, \u201cYou know, Rick\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 Honestly, it is almost always attributed to my emotional neglect of her life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m passionate about everything.\u00a0 I am a big time Boston Red Sox\u2019s fan.\u00a0 It is very easy for me to be caught up in things and lose track of where she is emotionally.\u00a0 To be in a social setting and the demand\u2014people want to talk to me, I\u2019ve got things I\u2019m trying\u2014I\u2019ve got balls in the air.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut you know she is the precious wife whom God has given me.\u00a0 I should tell you, God has given me the desire of my heart in a godly woman.\u00a0 Yet, isn\u2019t this sad that I have to be biblically rebuked and commanded to love my wife?\u00a0 Women have to be told to respect their husbands.\u00a0 That is bad enough.\u00a0 We have to be commanded to love our wives because sin is always going to pull men outward.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe flesh is going to pull man\u2014what are males\u2019 sins: pride, lust, all those sorts of things.\u00a0 Female sins are resentment, anxiety, fear.\u00a0 Well, like every other man, I can be pulled out into the world, all the responsibilities and opportunities.\u00a0 God wants me to love my wife and to be a faithful husband.\u00a0 We haven\u2019t even talked about children yet.\u00a0 God wants me to be faithful in those duties, and I really do, too.\u00a0 But I have this flesh problem.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Boston Red Sox is that what you said?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Rick:<\/strong>\u00a0 I
