<\/strong>Now in his eighth decade of life, Dr. Howard Hendricks has a word for others who are just a few laps short of the finish line.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Hendricks:<\/strong>\u00a0 The longer I minister in this area, the more I think, the more I am exposed to the Christian community, the more I am convinced that some of the sloppiest thinking in all of time totally infects Christians who move into retirement.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf it\u2019s true that the only two things that God is going to take off this earth are people and this Word, then get the clue for a legacy.\u00a0 Spend the rest of your life building His Word into the life of people.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday, October 15<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey, and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 We\u2019re going to take time today to consider what it looks like to finish well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 You know, I had the structural engineers come in here just now and just make sure that the soapbox (sound of table struck three times) could withstand the pounding that you\u2019ve been giving it in recent days.\u00a0 I mean, you\u2019ve been after this subject with as much ferocity and intensity as I\u2019ve seen in quite some time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just a laid back guy, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s been a while since we\u2019ve taken two whole weeks to unpack a subject like this.\u00a0 You\u2019ve had some passion, some fire in your bones on this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think we\u2019re all in the process of leaving a legacy, and I think it\u2019s worth ten broadcasts to really cause people to think what kind of a legacy are you going to leave.\u00a0 Not just leaving an inheritance to your children, talking about money, but what kind of values, what kind of life are you going to pass on?\u00a0 What kind of spiritual life will you implant in the hearts of your children and your grandchildren for future generations?\u00a0 And while we\u2019re on the subject, I\u2019ve got a question for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 OK.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How many people over the age of seventy-five years do you know that you\u2019d like to be like when you\u2019re their age?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m trying to think of how many people I know over the age of seventy-five to begin with.\u00a0 You know, there aren\u2019t a whole lot of those.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well the point is (laughing). . .\u00a0 You\u2019re making the point.\u00a0 The point is, as I asked myself the question, I thought, \u201cnot a lot.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not a lot.\u00a0 As I\u2019ve gone through life I\u2019ve run into all kinds of people who were in the twilight years of their lives.\u00a0 You kind of begin to notice some common themes and it\u2019s not the theme, necessarily, that we automatically finish well.\u00a0 That we really do end up at the end of our lives going for it, stretched out for the finish line.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, that\u2019s really the last principle of this series on leaving a legacy.\u00a0 And that is, your legacy really needs to be one that models for future generations what it looks like to finish well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That means not running aground on your way to the finish line, or tripping up within the last, I don\u2019t know, twenty or so yards of the race.\u00a0 But it also means continuing to keep the pace up as you head toward the goal, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what the Apostle Paul said to Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:6-8.\u00a0 He said, \u201cFor I am already being poured out as a drink offering and the time of my departure has come.\u00a0 I have fought the good fight.\u00a0 I have finished the race.\u00a0 I have kept the faith.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m going to go ahead and read the rest of it, because it\u2019s good too.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHenceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day.\u00a0 And not only to me, but also to all who have loved his appearing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, Paul was putting his spiritual arm around Timothy, and he was saying, \u201cLet\u2019s go, Timothy.\u00a0 I\u2019ve run my race.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the baton. Now you run yours.\u201d\u00a0 If there\u2019s ever been a time in our nation\u2019s history when we\u2019ve needed a whole herd of people above the age of 55 to be purposeful, intentional, running their lives flat out toward the finish line, it\u2019s today.\u00a0 We all need to be about the King\u2019s business for our entire lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the reason we don\u2019t do that is really three-fold.\u00a0 I\u2019ll give these to you quickly, but I think this is important for our listeners to understand.\u00a0 First of all, one of the reasons why we don\u2019t finish well is we don\u2019t have a biblical view of aging.\u00a0 We don\u2019t think about growing old as God thinks about us growing old. I don\u2019t think we were meant to rust out.\u00a0 I think God designed us to wear out, and to be worn out about the King\u2019s business as long as he gives us the health and the ability to be able to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well the biblical expression \u2013 you read it in 2 Timothy 4 \u2013 is to be \u201cpoured out.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 The second reason why we don\u2019t finish well today is that we don\u2019t have the models of what it looks like.\u00a0 In fact, many of us as we\u2019ve already mentioned here, have negative models of gripe-y, crotchety, complaining, elderly people who shrink as they get older.\u00a0 Now my mom used to always laugh about this.\u00a0 She\u2019d say, \u201cYour old mom is getting shorter and shorter.\u201d\u00a0 Well, I think it\u2019s true.\u00a0 We do kind of shrink in size, but our souls should not shrink.\u00a0 Our souls should be growing and invigorated.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, in fact the Bible says, \u201cEven though the outer man is decaying\u201d or the \u201cearthly tent\u201d (that\u2019s the other expression that\u2019s often used) \u201cis being folded up, the inner man is being renewed day by day.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That can happen into our late years of life.\u00a0 And third, in the absence of these models and what the Bible teaches, what we end up doing is we just give in and cave in to the flesh and the message of the world and just say, \u201cYou know what, let\u2019s tuck it in and slide for home.\u00a0 Let\u2019s take it easy.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, as you talk about this, I think of the story that Pastor John Piper shared with us when he was here, and he tells it in his book, <em>Don\u2019t Waste your Life<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I thought about the same story, Bob.\u00a0 I\u2019m glad you\u2019re sharing it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John Piper<\/strong>:\u00a0 I got this story from <em>Reader\u2019s Digest<\/em>.\u00a0 And it was written by them, so it\u2019s not told about them, and I won\u2019t give any names, but they were marveling that at, I think, age 51 and 52 or something like that, they were able to retire early, go to Florida, and the peak of their excitement about this stage in their life was that they could play softball and collect shells.\u00a0 I just read that and thought, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to be kidding.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now we\u2019re talking about the ultimate experience in their lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John Piper<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes, evidently.\u00a0 I mean, I\u2019m thinking that in the last chapter in my life, I am mainly preparing the meet the Judge of the Universe, and give an account with my little vaporous life on this earth.\u00a0 He\u2019s not going to ask, \u201cCan I see your shell collection?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or \u201cWho won the softball game?\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not going to matter, is it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John Piper<\/strong>:\u00a0 It\u2019s not.\u00a0 And so it became a kind of paradigm story for me of the American way, because tragically, the AARP and most people giving counsel on what to do with your latter years are telling you to go play them away on a golf course somewhere, and I\u2019m thinking that is not the way I want to spend my life at all, let alone my last years, in the months just preceding seeing the King of the Universe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Of course, that\u2019s John Piper when he was a guest on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> a number of months ago.\u00a0\u00a0 The point is, don\u2019t waste your life no matter what age you are, but don\u2019t be preconditioned like I think we are sometimes, that there comes a point where, because you retire from a job, then you then retire from life, you retire from purpose.\u00a0 I think we have this idea that our purpose is wrapped up in our vocation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, if we let the culture tell us it\u2019s going to make older people useless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, there have been many gifts God has given me in my lifetime, but I\u2019d have to say one of the top ten gifts he\u2019s given me has to be the privilege of having had three human beings in my life who have shown me how to finish the race.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of them is Bill Bright.\u00a0 You\u2019ve heard me share about him on numerous occasions, the President and Founder of Campus Crusade for Christ.\u00a0 The other one is Dr. Howard Hendricks, my mentor and professor at Dallas Theological Seminary.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just had the privilege back a couple of months ago of going to Dallas and participating in the ceremony where he celebrated retiring from teaching after 60 years at Dallas Seminary.\u00a0 Have you ever know anybody who had the same job for 60 years?\u00a0 I haven\u2019t.\u00a0 What a picture of producing fruit.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it was interesting as we had dinner with him the night before the big celebration, he was saying, \u201cYou know, I am retiring.\u00a0 But I am thinking about inviting some young seminary students over to the house a couple of nights a week, so we can teach them and we can continue the process of discipling them and building into their lives.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow here\u2019s a guy who has lost one eye to cancer, who has fallen off the platform while he stepped down from speaking and broke three ribs. He\u2019s had heart problems, innumerable health issues, and he\u2019s a visionary.\u00a0 He\u2019s growing.\u00a0 He\u2019s asking about what books you\u2019ve read recently that have challenged you.\u00a0 I mean, he is alive between the ears and between the shoulders.\u00a0 His heart and soul are growing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd the third is a widow lady who lives here in Little Rock, whose name is Kitty Longstreth.\u00a0 She became a widow in her early 60\u2019s and I met her not long after that.\u00a0 We were talking on the phone one day, and she basically said, \u201cDennis, what should I do?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cWell, Kitty, you just need to give your life to 2 Timothy 2:2.\u00a0 Invest in people.\u201d\u00a0 And I said, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you find twelve women you could build your life into, and for the rest of your life keep building into twelve women?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, Kitty Longstreth is now 91 years old, and she\u2019s still very much alive, battling some health issues, but you know what?\u00a0 Her home, at the age of 65, became the doorway through which single people and married folks found a relationship with Christ, were discipled by Kitty.\u00a0 They\u2019d go on walks with Kitty while she prayed to learn how to pray for people.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn 1977, Barbara nearly died when her heart took off and raced at 300 beats per minute and it was Kitty Longstreth who got up off of her knees, having been praying all day for Barbara.\u00a0 Her legacy is mighty.\u00a0 She invests in people\u2019s lives and is still investing in people\u2019s lives.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I think of people, really models who are finishing well, I can\u2019t help but think of my friend, Crawford Loritts, who is a pastor in Atlanta, Georgia and who speaks at our Weekend to Remember\u00ae marriage getaway.\u00a0 He is also on FamilyLife\u2019s Board of Directors.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe talks often about how his dad finished well.\u00a0 He tells a story about his father, who was the grandson of a slave, and how his father got his values around family from his grandfather, and how he held on to those values all the way to the finish line.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Crawford Loritts<\/strong>:\u00a0 My last name, \u2018Loritts,\u2019 is a French name.\u00a0 I ain\u2019t French, but it\u2019s a French name.\u00a0 My great-grandfather whose name was Peter was a slave on a Louisiana plantation.\u00a0 The story is that during the Civil War, apparently Peter migrated with the family that owned him to Catawba County, North Carolina.\u00a0 That\u2019s where our roots are.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPeter was an illiterate man.\u00a0 He couldn\u2019t read and he couldn\u2019t write.\u00a0 In fact, the name, \u2018Loritts,\u2019 is spelled L-o-r-i-t-t-s; anybody in the world who spells it that way is directly related to us.\u00a0 We surmise that somebody just spelled it phonetically for the old guy and it stuck.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPeter evidently had a benevolent owner, and when he was released during the Emancipation Proclamation, they gave him a large portion of land, and through a number of years, he acquired some more land.\u00a0 He acquired about 350 acres of farm land there in what is now known as Conover, North Carolina.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPeter had two things, though, that have marked each succeeding generation.\u00a0\u00a0 Peter was a singing and a praying man.\u00a0 My dad can remember him.\u00a0 He lived to be an old, old man.\u00a0 My father can remember Grandpa Peter.\u00a0 He said the old guy used to sit on the front porch of the old house.\u00a0 He used to sit there and rock back and forth and sing and pray.\u00a0 He loved Jesus with all of his heart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe story is told that he had memorized \u2013 I know he was illiterate \u2013 but he had memorized entire portions of scripture.\u00a0 You know what he used to do?\u00a0 He used to make his children and grandchildren read to him over and over and over and over again his favorite passages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, Peter had a deep, passionate commitment to his family.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know where he got it from.\u00a0 There\u2019s no record of his mother or his father, but for some reason somewhere along the line, this old guy developed a deep, passionate commitment to his family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe had three children: my grandfather Milton, my great-uncle, Uncle H.P., (Milton\u2019s brother), and their sister, Aunt Georgia.\u00a0 My grandfather, Milton, had seven boys and seven girls, 14 kids.\u00a0 You say, \u201cWell look, you mean Peter\u2019s your great-grandfather?\u201d\u00a0 Yes, because, see, my dad is the youngest boy, and he\u2019s 80, and so it was his grandfather that was a slave.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were brought up in the heyday of the Klan in the rural South, and yet, despite all of that, all of my uncles carried with them the signature of Peter that had been passed on to my grandfather, Milton.\u00a0 Each of them has a deep-seated commitment to the family.\u00a0\u00a0 That signature was on my father\u2019s soul as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn 1941 my parents were married, so in the early 1940s my mother and my dad moved up to Newark, New Jersey, and all of us kids were born there in Newark, New Jersey.\u00a0 My dad worked for over 30 years for A &amp; P Warehouse.\u00a0 My father never went to any family conference.\u00a0 He never read a book on the family.\u00a0 I don\u2019t even think (other than for me telling him) he even knows who James Dobson is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut every Saturday was family day.\u00a0 I played Little League baseball there at the Boys Club on Littleton Avenue, and my father used to finagle his schedule around.\u00a0 Because he had to work nights, he used to work the shift, four to 12.\u00a0 But whenever I had games, he would finagle his schedule around so he could be with me.\u00a0 And he would stand at the same place all the time, right along first base line.\u00a0 We had a chain link fence, and he would just cheer me on.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI never had any need that my father didn\u2019t break his back to supply.\u00a0 I remember an argument that he and my mother had.\u00a0 They needed the money \u2013 I was a little guy \u2013 I was about eight years old \u2013 they needed the money for something, and it was Christmas time.\u00a0 If my dad had worked the holidays, he could have made triple time, but I\u2019ll never forget these words:\u00a0 He said, \u201cSylvia, I\u2019m not going to do that.\u201d\u00a0 My dad\u2019s not a lazy man.\u00a0 \u201cThat would be blood money.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ll never forget that line.\u00a0 \u201cAnd these kids need me around here a little bit more.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was on my way to Africa.\u00a0 In fact it was late that Sunday night, and I get this phone call near midnight from my mother.\u00a0 My mother was on the phone and she was crying.\u00a0 She said, \u201cBetter come up here and see about your daddy.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWell, honey, I\u2019m at the hospital, and they don\u2019t expect him to live.\u201d\u00a0 Well, needless to say, I caught the first flight the next morning up there to Virginia, and I get there, and I\u2019ll never forget this scene.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were standing around the bed, and I was up near his head, and my mother was over here, and my two sisters were down here.\u00a0 I\u2019ll never forget him looking at me, and he said, \u201cWell, boy,\u201d tears coming down his cheeks, \u201cI did the very best I could.\u201d\u00a0 And I knew exactly what he meant by that.\u00a0 I leaned over and kissed him and I said, \u201cPop, you did a great job.\u201d\u00a0 See, nobody will ever know who my father was.\u00a0 Nobody will ever know who my grandfather, Milton, was.\u00a0 We can\u2019t even find Peter\u2019s grave, although he\u2019s buried behind the church there, across the street from the old homestead.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut every time I stand before a group like this, and every time they mention my name, or they say \u201c<em>Dr.<\/em> Loritts,\u201d or every time I sit in a board meeting, or every time somebody reads an article that I write, I stand on the shoulders of great men.\u00a0 I stand on the shoulders of people who quietly did the job, and I want to tell you something.\u00a0 I want to tell you something.\u00a0 If a former slave could do it, who couldn\u2019t read or couldn\u2019t write, who never attended a HomeBuilders Bible study, if my dad could do it, why can\u2019t we do it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe can turn the tide in this country, but it\u2019s going to take some rolling up the sleeves, it\u2019s going to take some self-denial, it\u2019s going to take some re-ordering of priorities, it\u2019s going to take some tough decisions, but we can do it.\u00a0 By God\u2019s grace, we can do it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPlease forgive me, but it\u2019s a strange thing when you see the passing of an era, and you realize that now it\u2019s my turn to tell my kids and my grandkids those old stories.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to turn this thing around.\u00a0 commandments.\u00a0 His offspring will be mighty in the land.\u00a0 The generation of the upright will be blessed.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat kind of legacy are you going to leave?\u00a0 The decision is yours.\u00a0 May God grant you favor and may your legacy be mighty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And really as you\u2019ve said throughout this series, for that to happen we have to be focused on the right thing.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to have the right intentionality, the right priorities.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to have a purposefulness to our lives.\u00a0 I think there are too many folks who are just kind of floating through life without that purpose firmly in place.\u00a0 If you said to them, \u201cWhat\u2019s your mission?\u00a0 What\u2019s your purpose?\u201d they\u2019d look at you with a blank stare, like they\u2019re not even sure how to answer that question.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, even in a in his eighth decade of life, Dr. Howard Hendricks has a word for others who are just a few laps short of the finish line.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dr. Hendricks:<\/strong>\u00a0 The longer I minister in this area, the more I think, the more I am exposed to the Christian community, the more I am convinced that some of the sloppiest thinking in all of time totally infects Christians who move into retirement.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf it\u2019s true that the only two things that God is going to take off this earth are people and this Word, then get the like to finish well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us.\u00a0 You know, I had the structural engineers come in here just now and just make sure that the soapbox (sound of table struck three times) could withstand the pounding that you\u2019ve been giving it in recent days.\u00a0 I mean, you\u2019ve been after this subject with as much ferocity and intensity as I\u2019ve seen in quite some time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Really.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just a laid back guy, Bob.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s been a while since we\u2019ve taken two whole weeks to unpack a subject like this.\u00a0 You\u2019ve had some passion, some fire in your bones on this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I think we\u2019re all in the process of leaving a legacy, and I think it\u2019s worth ten broadcasts to really cause people to think what kind of a legacy are you going to leave.\u00a0 Not just leaving an inheritance to your children, talking about money, but what kind of values, what kind of life are you going to pass on?\u00a0 What kind of spiritual life will you implant in the hearts of your children and your grandchildren for future generations?\u00a0 And while we\u2019re on the subject, I\u2019ve got a question for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 OK.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How many people over the age of seventy-five years do you know that you\u2019d like to be like when you\u2019re their age?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m trying to think of how many people I know over the age of seventy-five to begin with.\u00a0 You know, there aren\u2019t a whole lot of those.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong> Well the point is (laughing). . .\u00a0 You\u2019re making the point.\u00a0 The point is, as I asked myself the question, I thought, \u201cnot a lot.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not a lot.\u00a0 As I\u2019ve gone through life I\u2019ve run into all kinds of people who were in the twilight years of their lives.\u00a0 You kind of begin to notice some common themes and it\u2019s not the theme, necessarily, that we automatically finish well.\u00a0 That we really do end up at the end of our lives going for it, stretched out for the finish line.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, that\u2019s really the last principle of this series on leaving a legacy.\u00a0 And that is, your legacy really needs to be one that models for future generations what it looks like to finish well.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That means not running aground on your way to the finish line, or tripping up within the last, I don\u2019t know, twenty or so yards of the race.\u00a0 But it also means continuing to keep the pace up as you head toward the goal, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what the Apostle Paul said to Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:6-8.\u00a0 He said, \u201cFor I am already being poured out as a drink offering and the time of my departure has come.\u00a0 I have fought the good fight.\u00a0 I have finished the race.\u00a0 I have kept the faith.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019m going to go ahead and read the rest of it, because it\u2019s good too.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cHenceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day.\u00a0 And not only to me, but also to all who have loved his appearing.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, Paul was putting his spiritual arm around Timothy, and he was saying, \u201cLet\u2019s go, Timothy.\u00a0 I\u2019ve run my race.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the baton. Now you run yours.\u201d\u00a0 If there\u2019s ever been a time in our nation\u2019s history when we\u2019ve needed a whole herd of people above the age of 55 to be purposeful, intentional, running their lives flat out toward the finish line, it\u2019s today.\u00a0 We all need to be about the King\u2019s business for our entire lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, the reason we don\u2019t do that is really three-fold.\u00a0 I\u2019ll give these to you quickly, but I think this is important for our listeners to understand.\u00a0 First of all, one of the reasons why we don\u2019t finish well is we don\u2019t have a biblical view of aging.\u00a0 We don\u2019t think about growing old as God thinks about us growing old. I don\u2019t think we were meant to rust out.\u00a0 I think God designed us to wear out, and to be worn out about the King\u2019s business as long as he gives us the health and the ability to be able to do that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well the biblical expression \u2013 you read it in 2 Timothy 4 \u2013 is to be \u201cpoured out.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That\u2019s exactly right.\u00a0 The second reason why we don\u2019t finish well today is that we don\u2019t have the models of what it looks like.\u00a0 In fact, many of us as we\u2019ve already mentioned here, have negative models of gripe-y, crotchety, complaining, elderly people who shrink as they get older.\u00a0 Now my mom used to always laugh about this.\u00a0 She\u2019d say, \u201cYour old mom is getting shorter and shorter.\u201d\u00a0 Well, I think it\u2019s true.\u00a0 We do kind of shrink in size, but our souls should not shrink.\u00a0 Our souls should be growing and invigorated.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, in fact the Bible says, \u201cEven though the outer man is decaying\u201d or the \u201cearthly tent\u201d (that\u2019s the other expression that\u2019s often used) \u201cis being folded up, the inner man is being renewed day by day.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That can happen into our late years of life.\u00a0 And third, in the absence of these models and what the Bible teaches, what we end up doing is we just give in and cave in to the flesh and the message of the world and just say, \u201cYou know what, let\u2019s tuck it in and slide for home.\u00a0 Let\u2019s take it easy.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, as you talk about this, I think of the story that Pastor John Piper shared with us when he was here, and he tells it in his book, <em>Don\u2019t Waste your Life<\/em>. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I thought about the same story, Bob.\u00a0 I\u2019m glad you\u2019re sharing it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John Piper<\/strong>:\u00a0 I got this story from <em>Reader\u2019s Digest<\/em>.\u00a0 And it was written by them, so it\u2019s not told about them, and I won\u2019t give any names, but they were marveling that at, I think, age 51 and 52 or something like that, they were able to retire early, go to Florida, and the peak of their excitement about this stage in their life was that they could play softball and collect shells.\u00a0 I just read that and thought, \u201cYou\u2019ve got to be kidding.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Now we\u2019re talking about the ultimate experience in their lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John Piper<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes, evidently.\u00a0 I mean, I\u2019m thinking that in the last chapter in my life, I am mainly preparing the meet the Judge of the Universe, and give an account with my little vaporous life on this earth.\u00a0 He\u2019s not going to ask, \u201cCan I see your shell collection?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or \u201cWho won the softball game?\u201d\u00a0 It\u2019s not going to matter, is it?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>John Piper<\/strong>:\u00a0 It\u2019s not.\u00a0 And so it became a kind of paradigm story for me of the American way, because tragically, the AARP and most people giving counsel on what to do with your latter years are telling you to go play them away on a golf course somewhere, and I\u2019m thinking that is not the way I want to spend my life at all, let alone my last years, in the months just preceding seeing the King of the Universe.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Of course, that\u2019s John Piper when he was a guest on <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> a number of months ago.\u00a0\u00a0 The point is, don\u2019t waste your life no matter what age you are, but don\u2019t be preconditioned like I think we are sometimes, that there comes a point where, because you retire from a job, then you then retire from life, you retire from purpose.\u00a0 I think we have this idea that our purpose is wrapped up in our vocation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, if we let the culture tell us it\u2019s going to make older people useless.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You know, there have been many gifts God has given me in my lifetime, but I\u2019d have to say one of the top ten gifts he\u2019s given me has to be the privilege of having had three human beings in my life who have shown me how to finish the race.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOne of them is Bill Bright.\u00a0 You\u2019ve heard me share about him on numerous occasions, the President and Founder of Campus Crusade for Christ.\u00a0 The other one is Dr. Howard Hendricks, my mentor and professor at Dallas Theological Seminary.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just had the privilege back a couple of months ago of going to Dallas and participating in the ceremony where he celebrated retiring from teaching after 60 years at Dallas Seminary.\u00a0 Have you ever know anybody who had the same job for 60 years?\u00a0 I haven\u2019t.\u00a0 What a picture of producing fruit.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd it was interesting as we had dinner with him the night before the big celebration, he was saying, \u201cYou know, I am retiring.\u00a0 But I am thinking about inviting some young seminary students over to the house a couple of nights a week, so we can teach them and we can continue the process of discipling them and building into their lives.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow here\u2019s a guy who has lost one eye to cancer, who has fallen off the platform while he stepped down from speaking and broke three ribs. He\u2019s had heart problems, innumerable health issues, and he\u2019s a visionary.\u00a0 He\u2019s growing.\u00a0 He\u2019s asking about what books you\u2019ve read recently that have challenged you.\u00a0 I mean, he is alive between the ears and between the shoulders.\u00a0 His heart and soul are growing.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd the third is a widow lady who lives here in Little Rock, whose name is Kitty Longstreth.\u00a0 She became a widow in her early 60\u2019s and I met her not long after that.\u00a0 We were talking on the phone one day, and she basically said, \u201cDennis, what should I do?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cWell, Kitty, you just need to give your life to 2 Timothy 2:2.\u00a0 Invest in people.\u201d\u00a0 And I said, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you find twelve women you could build your life into, and for the rest of your life keep building into twelve women?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWell, Kitty Longstreth is now 91 years old, and she\u2019s still very much alive, battling some health issues, but you know what?\u00a0 Her home, at the age of 65, became the doorway through which single people and married folks found a relationship with Christ, were discipled by Kitty.\u00a0 They\u2019d go on walks with Kitty while she prayed to learn how to pray for people.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn 1977, Barbara nearly died when her heart took off and raced at 300 beats per minute and it was Kitty Longstreth who got up off of her knees, having been praying all day for Barbara.\u00a0 Her legacy is mighty.\u00a0 She invests in people\u2019s lives and is still investing in people\u2019s lives.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I think of people, really models who are finishing well, I can\u2019t help but think of my friend, Crawford Loritts, who is a pastor in Atlanta, Georgia and who speaks at our Weekend to Remember\u00ae marriage getaway.\u00a0 He is also on FamilyLife\u2019s Board of Directors.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe talks often about how his dad finished well.\u00a0 He tells a story about his father, who was the grandson of a slave, and how his father got his values around family from his grandfather, and how he held on to those values all the way to the finish line.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Crawford Loritts<\/strong>:\u00a0 My last name, \u2018Loritts,\u2019 is a French name.\u00a0 I ain\u2019t French, but it\u2019s a French name.\u00a0 My great-grandfather whose name was Peter was a slave on a Louisiana plantation.\u00a0 The story is that during the Civil War, apparently Peter migrated with the family that owned him to Catawba County, North Carolina.\u00a0 That\u2019s where our roots are.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPeter was an illiterate man.\u00a0 He couldn\u2019t read and he couldn\u2019t write.\u00a0 In fact, the name, \u2018Loritts,\u2019 is spelled L-o-r-i-t-t-s; anybody in the world who spells it that way is directly related to us.\u00a0 We surmise that somebody just spelled it phonetically for the old guy and it stuck.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPeter evidently had a benevolent owner, and when he was released during the Emancipation Proclamation, they gave him a large portion of land, and through a number of years, he acquired some more land.\u00a0 He acquired about 350 acres of farm land there in what is now known as Conover, North Carolina.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPeter had two things, though, that have marked each succeeding generation.\u00a0\u00a0 Peter was a singing and a praying man.\u00a0 My dad can remember him.\u00a0 He lived to be an old, old man.\u00a0 My father can remember Grandpa Peter.\u00a0 He said the old guy used to sit on the front porch of the old house.\u00a0 He used to sit there and rock back and forth and sing and pray.\u00a0 He loved Jesus with all of his heart.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe story is told that he had memorized \u2013 I know he was illiterate \u2013 but he had memorized entire portions of scripture.\u00a0 You know what he used to do?\u00a0 He used to make his children and grandchildren read to him over and over and over and over again his favorite passages.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, Peter had a deep, passionate commitment to his family.\u00a0 We don\u2019t know where he got it from.\u00a0 There\u2019s no record of his mother or his father, but for some reason somewhere along the line, this old guy developed a deep, passionate commitment to his family.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe had three children: my grandfather Milton, my great-uncle, Uncle H.P., (Milton\u2019s brother), and their sister, Aunt Georgia.\u00a0 My grandfather, Milton, had seven boys and seven girls, 14 kids.\u00a0 You say, \u201cWell look, you mean Peter\u2019s your great-grandfather?\u201d\u00a0 Yes, because, see, my dad is the youngest boy, and he\u2019s 80, and so it was his grandfather that was a slave.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThey were brought up in the heyday of the Klan in the rural South, and yet, despite all of that, all of my uncles carried with them the signature of Peter that had been passed on to my grandfather, Milton.\u00a0 Each of them has a deep-seated commitment to the family.\u00a0\u00a0 That signature was on my father\u2019s soul as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn 1941 my parents were married, so in the early 1940s my mother and my dad moved up to Newark, New Jersey, and all of us kids were born there in Newark, New Jersey.\u00a0 My dad worked for over 30 years for A &amp; P Warehouse.\u00a0 My father never went to any family conference.\u00a0 He never read a book on the family.\u00a0 I don\u2019t even think (other than for me telling him) he even knows who James Dobson is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut every Saturday was family day.\u00a0 I played Little League baseball there at the Boys Club on Littleton Avenue, and my father used to finagle his schedule around.\u00a0 Because he had to work nights, he used to work the shift, four to 12.\u00a0 But whenever I had games, he would finagle his schedule around so he could be with me.\u00a0 And he would stand at the same place all the time, right along first base line.\u00a0 We had a chain link fence, and he would just cheer me on.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI never had any need that my father didn\u2019t break his back to supply.\u00a0 I remember an argument that he and my mother had.\u00a0 They needed the money \u2013 I was a little guy \u2013 I was about eight years old \u2013 they needed the money for something, and it was Christmas time.\u00a0 If my dad had worked the holidays, he could have made triple time, but I\u2019ll never forget these words:\u00a0 He said, \u201cSylvia, I\u2019m not going to do that.\u201d\u00a0 My dad\u2019s not a lazy man.\u00a0 \u201cThat would be blood money.\u201d\u00a0 I\u2019ll never forget that line.\u00a0 \u201cAnd these kids need me around here a little bit more.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was on my way to Africa.\u00a0 In fact it was late that Sunday night, and I get this phone call near midnight from my mother.\u00a0 My mother was on the phone and she was crying.\u00a0 She said, \u201cBetter come up here and see about your daddy.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWell, honey, I\u2019m at the hospital, and they don\u2019t expect him to live.\u201d\u00a0 Well, needless to say, I caught the first flight the next morning up there to Virginia, and I get there, and I\u2019ll never forget this scene.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe were standing around the bed, and I was up near his head, and my mother was over here, and my two sisters were down here.\u00a0 I\u2019ll never forget him looking at me, and he said, \u201cWell, boy,\u201d tears coming down his cheeks, \u201cI did the very best I could.\u201d\u00a0 And I knew exactly what he meant by that.\u00a0 I leaned over and kissed him and I said, \u201cPop, you did a great job.\u201d\u00a0 See, nobody will ever know who my father was.\u00a0 Nobody will ever know who my grandfather, Milton, was.\u00a0 We can\u2019t even find Peter\u2019s grave, although he\u2019s buried behind the church there, across the street from the old homestead.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut every time I stand before a group like this, and every time they mention my name, or they say \u201c<em>Dr.<\/em> Loritts,\u201d or every time I sit in a board meeting, or every time somebody reads an article that I write, I stand on the shoulders of great men.\u00a0 I stand on the shoulders of people who quietly did the job, and I want to tell you something.\u00a0 I want to tell you something.\u00a0 If a former slave could do it, who couldn\u2019t read or couldn\u2019t write, who never attended a HomeBuilders Bible study, if my dad could do it, why can\u2019t we do it?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe can turn the tide in this country, but it\u2019s going to take some rolling up the sleeves, it\u2019s going to take some self-denial, it\u2019s going to take some re-ordering of priorities, it\u2019s going to take some tough decisions, but we can do it.\u00a0 By God\u2019s grace, we can do it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPlease forgive me, but it\u2019s a strange thing when you see the passing of an era, and you realize that now it\u2019s my turn to tell my kids and my grandkids those old stories.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to turn this thing around.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Song:<\/em><em>\u00a0 <\/em><em>(Sung in Negro spiritual style, with harmonica accompaniment)<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>Down through the years, of my life verse, Psalm 112:1-2.\u00a0 It has my granddaughter, Molly\u2019s, handprint on it.\u00a0 \u201cPraise the Lord.\u00a0 Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his commandments.\u00a0 His offspring will be mighty in the land.\u00a0 The generation of the upright will be blessed.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhat kind of legacy are you going to leave?\u00a0 The decision is yours.\u00a0 May God grant you favor and may your legacy be mighty.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 And really as you\u2019ve said throughout this series, for that to happen we have to be focused on the right thing.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to have the right intentionality, the right priorities.\u00a0 We\u2019ve got to have a purposefulness to our lives.\u00a0 I think there are too many folks who are just kind of floating through life without that purpose firmly in place.\u00a0 If you said to them, \u201cWhat\u2019s your mission?\u00a0 What\u2019s your purpose?\u201d they\u2019d look at you with a blank stare, like they\u2019re not even sure how to answer that question.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou know, even in a small way, the new story that the folks at Veggie Tales have put together called <em>It\u2019s a Meaningful Life <\/em>does a great job of highlighting that, while most people have their sights set on
