(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are still alive, or one of your descendents is alive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Alright.\u00a0 Okay, that is good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Whoever it is, is sitting there turns to the person at the sporting event that they don\u2019t know who they are, and they introduce themselves to the other person.\u00a0 The other person says my name is Jim Madoff.\u00a0 What would you immediately want to know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You any relation to Bernie Madoff?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That person undoubtedly at that point would slump a bit and say I\u2019ve been found out again.\u00a0 Probably will live a lifetime\u2014unless they change their last name\u2014of living down the actions of Bernie.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSeventy-one years old, the Wall Street Journal, Bob, recorded his score card: lies, scams, deceit, betrayal.\u00a0 One judge referred to his business as quote \u201cextraordinarily evil fraud.\u201d\u00a0 Bernie told his sons that he was all about a massive Ponzi scheme, and that they been involved with him in it for years.\u00a0 Total losses 19.4 billion dollars.\u00a0 When he was sentenced to 150 years in prison, the courtroom broke into cheers and applause.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want you to think about that.\u00a0 What if you were Bernie Madoff sitting at the table and you are hearing people applaud you going to jail?\u00a0 Well, I save something, Bob, that is just a reminder to me.\u00a0 It is the headlines from the Wall Street Journal.\u00a0 You are looking at it with me here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTuesday, June 30, 2009, the headline reads big, dark black print \u201cEvil Madoff Gets 150 Years in Epic Fraud.\u201d\u00a0 Then, it has got a picture that has been sketched.\u00a0 Madoff\u2019s quote underneath the picture says, \u201cI have left a legacy of shame to my children and grandchildren.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is the opposite of Proverbs 22:1.\u00a0 If Proverbs 22:1 says a good name is to be pursued and to be treasured, this is a name that has been disgraced and tarnished.\u00a0 It is something that you regret.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 At some point, they had the riches; but in the end, they lost both the riches and a name.\u00a0 In the process, as he said, he left them a legacy of shame.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are talking in this series about how you leave a legacy, about certain components that really build and make our legacy.\u00a0 What Madoff illustrates here is that your legacy is the result of the decisions you make over a lifetime.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I want you to do something for me, Bob.\u00a0 I want you to think about some families in the Bible and men and women who have led them.\u00a0 I want you to think about the different kinds of legacies people left. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who comes to your mind?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think of Abraham.\u00a0 I mean, families in the Bible, I go right back to Abraham and Sarah because they are the first family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What would have been the legacy that he would have left?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A mighty nation.\u00a0 God promised him \u201cI will make your descendents great.\u201d\u00a0 He became a great nation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was all in response to his faith: trusting God that, that mighty nation occurred.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was a flawed man.\u00a0 He messed up along the way, but he pursued his relationship with God.\u00a0 He exercised faith, and God blessed him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is there another that comes to your mind?\u00a0 Just waiting to see until you come up with the right one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter) \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNot that Abraham was a bad one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think of Mary and Joseph; but that was not the one, you are thinking of either.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That wasn\u2019t either.\u00a0 That was a good legacy, though.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes. You think of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You think of their faithfulness and what went on there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I will give you a hint.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Give me a hint. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This broadcast can only go so long.\u00a0 He was a king.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I would think of King David\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The great king of Israel.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What do you discern about his legacy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here is what has always been interesting to me about David.\u00a0 Mighty man, great faith, referred to in the Scriptures as \u201cthe man after God\u2019s own heart,\u201d who stumbled badly as a parent, apparently\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 As a husband, obviously.\u00a0 As a result, his latter years were sad.\u00a0 His legacy\u2014he was always remembered as the great king of Israel.\u00a0 They needed a king like David; but in terms of his family and his family tree, there was a lot of bitter fruit that was born by his decisions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 His life is summarized in Acts 13:36.\u00a0 It is a verse that I have quoted a couple of times in this series on legacies.\u00a0 It says, \u201cAfter David had served the purposes of God in his generation, he slept.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, here is a summary of a man whose life was checkered with successes and failures when it comes to God\u2019s opinion of life.\u00a0 Yet, when God summarizes his life in a dozen words or so, it says David was a part of accomplishing what God did in his generation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI take heart at that because I think we all are flawed.\u00a0 We have all made some stupid, foolish choices that mark us even today.\u00a0 Our God is a God of great grace and mercy.\u00a0 It is what the Cross of Christ and what the gospel of Jesus Christ is all about.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe went to the Cross to die for our sins; so, we could have right standing before Him, have our sins forgiven.\u00a0 So that as we live out our lives\u2014even if we have messed up with some huge decisions in the past maybe a divorce, maybe infidelity\u2014God is greater than those poor decisions.\u00a0 He can not necessarily overrule those decisions, but He can use you despite those decisions for His glory and His purposes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There may be consequences from those decisions that follow us through our lives.\u00a0 I think of the passage in Isaiah where it talks about God bringing beauty from ashes.\u00a0 That really is the story of each one of our lives as God brings redemption to the ash pile that we offer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how people who live life today, live without a faith in God.\u00a0 As you review your history and your mistakes, and you are reminded of where you have fallen short\u2014maybe they deny that, maybe that don\u2019t review, maybe they don\u2019t rehearse those mistakes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis, to me, is our hope that there is a God who does wash us white as snow and gives us a purpose for our lives.\u00a0 Even to take what mistakes we have made and use them for good because we are called according to His purposes.\u00a0 Our decisions are based on our worldview.\u00a0 Our convictions about what God says about life or what the world says about life.\u00a0 Some of us just buy into what the world says.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or what our flesh says, or the little voice we hear whispering in our ear says \u201ccome this way.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to read you something that is unfortunately a great illustration of this.\u00a0 One of our speakers at our <em>Weekend to Remember\u00ae<\/em> marriage getaways led a conference recently and received an e-mail from one of the guest at the conference.\u00a0 They had been married only a short period of time, let me just read you what was written to this speaker.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cMy name is Jim.\u00a0 I was at the conference this past weekend with my wife Jennifer.\u201d\u00a0 By the way, I have changed the names here, and I have also changed a couple of facts about the number of years they have been married.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says, \u201cI love my wife who I have been married to for six months. I also love a woman I have known for five years, who I truly care about.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what to do.\u00a0 I cannot keep myself from temptation.\u00a0 What should I do?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI know I should focus on my wife.\u00a0 I can\u2019t.\u00a0 There are so many women who want me.\u00a0 I am too weak to resist.\u00a0 I love this other woman, especially.\u00a0 I cannot help myself.\u00a0 I want you to tell me the right thing.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll listen, but I want to badly.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you think that young man is confused?\u00a0 Do you think he is being tempted?\u00a0 Do you think his life is in a vice?\u00a0 I mean, he has only been married for a few months, and he is already looking around or he has never stopped looking around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You wish you could sit down with a young man like that and say let\u2019s follow the trail your decision making process is going to lead you on.\u00a0 Let\u2019s just follow the natural progression.\u00a0 If you choose this, here is where you are headed.\u00a0 If you choose this, this is where you are headed.\u00a0 That is your point as you talk about legacies.\u00a0 The decisions we are facing today will put us on the path either for a legacy that will be celebrated or one that will be ashamed of.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You just virtually captured, in essence, what the speaker said.\u00a0 I want you to know the speaker had evidently talked to this young man throughout the weekend because he shoots rather forthrightly and straight with him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDear Jim, I will tell you what God says you need to do.\u00a0 You heard it all weekend.\u201d\u00a0 He goes onto say, \u201cif you don\u2019t choose to respond, then it is simply a matter of big you, little God, and little everyone else.\u00a0 Frankly, I can summarize what you really need to do in two words. Grow up!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exclamation point.\u00a0 \u201cYour commitment, Jim, is to you and your feelings.\u00a0 It is rooted in selfishness.\u00a0 Your wife is only secondary consideration in your comments to me.\u00a0 There are some deeply rooted problems in your heart that are allowing you to give such a strong foothold to the enemy.\u00a0 To be certain, his end is destruction, death, wasted life, and broken dreams.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tExactly what you said Bob.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIf you really want to find peace and God\u2019s perfect purposes for your life, then you have to start by dying to yourself and living for your wife.\u201d\u00a0 He goes onto share the gospel with this young man and explains how he can die to himself and ultimately give up his life for his wife by placing his faith in Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI look at the letter, and I have to wonder, \u201cIs this young man a follower of Christ?\u00a0 Does he really understand who Christ is?\u201d\u00a0 If he does, then he is certainly being a disobedient son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have heard me tell the story about me sitting down with my pastor years ago, and he shared with me about another man in our church who had just fallen to adultery.\u00a0 We were talking about the earthquake that was about to go off in that home.\u00a0 We were talking about the months and years of repair work that were going to have to be done in a marriage and a family because of an hour long indiscretion on the part of our friend.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember my pastor looking at me and saying, \u201cYou know, when you face a decision like this, you are not thinking about the months and the years or the legacy.\u00a0 You are just thinking about the immediate.\u201d\u00a0 I remember him also saying, \u201cAnd no sex is that good.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe is right.\u00a0 The decisions we face today can echo through the decades and can be felt by generations to come.\u00a0 That is why, to choose obedience and to choose to respond in faith is always the path that will lead toward the kind of legacy you\u2019ll celebrate later in life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 These decisions we are talking about, Bob\u2014when you step over the line morally, it is like setting off an atomic bomb.\u00a0 Yes, there is the initial devastation, but there is also the half life.\u00a0 The nuclear fallout and radiation that in this case as you\u2019re talking about, is going to be felt for generations that follow.\u00a0 They have no idea how that is going to impact a grandson, a granddaughter on down the line.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe point is we can\u2019t base our lives on our feelings.\u00a0 We have to base them upon convictions that are anchored in the Bible, the Word of God, Scriptures.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are three areas that for me, as a man, that I just look at; and I think, \u201cI want to leave a legacy to my children and my grandchildren around this subject.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first one is around making a decision to love people, who quite honestly if I was to allow my flesh to go where it would like to go, quite honestly, it would like to hate them.\u00a0 I have been wounded by a person in my life repeatedly.\u00a0 Family members have observed this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI recently had one of my adult children come to me and say, \u201cDad, why don\u2019t you just get ticked?\u201d\u00a0 I could almost hear my mom.\u00a0 My mom had a phrase that you don\u2019t hear used today.\u00a0 My mom used to say, \u201cWell, I just told her off.\u201d\u00a0 Just tell somebody off.\u00a0 In other words, you are giving them a piece of your mind that you can afford to lose.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just let it rip.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just let it rip.\u00a0 I look back at the family member who said this to me; and I said, \u201cI have not loved this person perfectly.\u00a0 I am not standing as some kind of self righteous, smug\u2014feeling like I\u2019ve done everything perfectly in this situation, but I want you to know I have not given into hatred either.\u00a0 The gospel calls me to forgive.\u00a0 The gospel calls me not to take into account a wrong suffered.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cI just want you to know some day I am going to be gone, and you are going to remember me for a lot of things.\u00a0 I hope I will have passed on to you a legacy of love.\u00a0 Because I have seen the other kind of legacies passed on in families and it is not good.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA second decision that is very determinative in our lives is who we choose to marry.\u00a0 Now, we have a lot of singles who listen to this broadcast.\u00a0 They typically hear us applying these principles to husbands and wives, moms and dads, and grandparents.\u00a0 I am going to apply this principle here to singles.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was recently having dinner with my mentor and friend Dr. Howard Hendricks.\u00a0 Over dinner I asked him the question, \u201cProf, what is the most courageous thing you\u2019ve done in your life?\u201d\u00a0 He got a sly grin on his face, and he looked back at me.\u00a0 He said, \u201cThat is easy.\u00a0 When I was in college, I was dating a young woman.\u00a0 I was having to make a decision to either do what my dad wanted me to do and go to college.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe, I would imagine an Ivy League school.\u00a0 He was a very, very bright young man.\u00a0 His dad wanted to see him excel.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said \u201cI was dating a young lady who wanted me to go in that direction too because that represented her values as well.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI was convinced, though, that God was at work in my life wanting me to go to seminary.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI knew what my dad\u2019s response would be to that.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI also knew what I had to do with this young lady because I couldn\u2019t marry her and take her to seminary because that didn\u2019t represent her values.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cI drove over to her house, and I told her that I decided to go to Dallas Theological Seminary.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cDennis, I had to pry her fingers off my car.\u00a0 So, I could drive away at the end of the discussion.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cIt was the most courageous thing I have ever done.\u201d\u00a0 Because he cared for the young lady and he had a history with her.\u00a0 He said, \u201cDriving away and then going back and telling my dad was the next most courageous thing.\u201d\u00a0 His dad\u2019s response was not positive either.\u00a0 He said, \u201cDennis, that was one of the most determinative decisions I have ever made in my life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is what is remarkable about it, Bob.\u00a0 I was sitting at that dinner celebrating with him 60 years of teaching.\u00a0 I think he touched about 13,000 students.\u00a0 He marked their lives with a love for Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis ministry is, in many ways, a part of that decision he made on that day with that young lady.\u00a0 FamilyLife was really initially forged and formed by an idea that Professor Hendricks had in a message he gave in St. Louis in 1975, that resulted in this ministry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour decisions, your legacy is going to be felt for generations.\u00a0 I want to go back for just a moment to Bernie Madoff.\u00a0 A good name is better than riches.\u00a0 My dad, Hook Rainey had a good name and a great legacy.\u00a0 His legacy was one of integrity, honesty, fidelity.\u00a0 Hook Rainey was a quiet man whose life spoke volumes.\u00a0 The older I get the more I realize what a gift he gave me in giving me a good name.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow here is the question.\u00a0 What decision do you need to make right now that will impact your descendants, your legacy for generations?\u00a0 Is it about a choice outside of your marriage?\u00a0 Is it about a choice inside your marriage, a temptation?\u00a0 Is it about work?\u00a0 Is it about what is right or wrong?\u00a0 The question is what kind of name will you leave to your children?\u00a0 What kind of legacy will it represent?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I keep coming back to a chorus of a song that Sara Groves recorded a number of years ago where she said, \u201cRemind me of this: with every decision, generations will reap what I sow.\u00a0 I can pass on a curse or a blessing to those I will never know.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is a sobering reminder.\u00a0 It is a sobering thought that we are not the only ones who will be affected by the choices we make.\u00a0 Even with the decisions that seem to only impact us or decisions that we make that nobody else sees or knows about, those decisions shape who we are.\u00a0 Who we are is a part of what gets what passed on to the next generation.\u00a0 We need to think soberly about that with the choices that are in front of us today, whatever those choices might be.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think at the same time we need to recognize that our lives do matter in the eternal scheme of things.\u00a0 There is a purpose for which we were created our lives have meaning because God created us to have meaning.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I sat down to watch the DVD that our friends at VeggieTales put together called <em>It\u2019s a Meaningful Life,<\/em> it is just a great reminder of the fact that you can lead what seems like an inconsequential life, a normal life\u2014where you do your job, you raise your kids, you are faithful to your wife\u2014 that may seem like I didn\u2019t do very much.\u00a0 You have no idea how profound that can be in the eternal sentenced to 150 years behind bars, the maximum sentence\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cBernie Madoff wearing handcuffs instead of cuff links\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cThousands of people were victimized by Bernard Madoff\u2026.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cThe name Bernard Madoff elicits raw and angry emotions among those who lost billions of what appears\u2026.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 In the spring of 2010 in New York, a woman petitioned the court to have her name legally changed.\u00a0 It was Bernie us.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn advertising, it has been common for years for businesses in small towns\u2014one of the things they say in their ads is \u201cin business since whenever.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 I remember hearing that in advertising when I was younger and thinking \u2018Oh, who cares how long you have been in business, right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI mean, I am not going to make a decision on who I am going to use based on the fact that you have been around for a long time.\u2019\u00a0 The older I get the more I think it does say something if you have been home owned for 60 years.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It really does.\u00a0 In fact, I want you to imagine something with me for a moment.\u00a0 I want you to go out 50 years to the year 2060.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are at a sporting event\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, I am dead. (laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You are still alive, or one of your descendents is alive.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Alright.\u00a0 Okay, that is good.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Whoever it is, is sitting there turns to the person at the sporting event that they don\u2019t know who they are, and they introduce themselves to the other person.\u00a0 The other person says my name is Jim Madoff.\u00a0 What would you immediately want to know?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You any relation to Bernie Madoff?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That person undoubtedly at that point would slump a bit and say I\u2019ve been found out again.\u00a0 Probably will live a lifetime\u2014unless they change their last name\u2014of living down the actions of Bernie.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSeventy-one years old, the Wall Street Journal, Bob, recorded his score card: lies, scams, deceit, betrayal.\u00a0 One judge referred to his business as quote \u201cextraordinarily evil fraud.\u201d\u00a0 Bernie told his sons that he was all about a massive Ponzi scheme, and that they been involved with him in it for years.\u00a0 Total losses 19.4 billion dollars.\u00a0 When he was sentenced to 150 years in prison, the courtroom broke into cheers and applause.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want you to think about that.\u00a0 What if you were Bernie Madoff sitting at the table and you are hearing people applaud you going to jail?\u00a0 Well, I save something, Bob, that is just a reminder to me.\u00a0 It is the headlines from the Wall Street Journal.\u00a0 You are looking at it with me here.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tTuesday, June 30, 2009, the headline reads big, dark black print \u201cEvil Madoff Gets 150 Years in Epic Fraud.\u201d\u00a0 Then, it has got a picture that has been sketched.\u00a0 Madoff\u2019s quote underneath the picture says, \u201cI have left a legacy of shame to my children and grandchildren.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is the opposite of Proverbs 22:1.\u00a0 If Proverbs 22:1 says a good name is to be pursued and to be treasured, this is a name that has been disgraced and tarnished.\u00a0 It is something that you regret.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 At some point, they had the riches; but in the end, they lost both the riches and a name.\u00a0 In the process, as he said, he left them a legacy of shame.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe are talking in this series about how you leave a legacy, about certain components that really build and make our legacy.\u00a0 What Madoff illustrates here is that your legacy is the result of the decisions you make over a lifetime.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I want you to do something for me, Bob.\u00a0 I want you to think about some families in the Bible and men and women who have led them.\u00a0 I want you to think about the different kinds of legacies people left. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who comes to your mind?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think of Abraham.\u00a0 I mean, families in the Bible, I go right back to Abraham and Sarah because they are the first family.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What would have been the legacy that he would have left?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 A mighty nation.\u00a0 God promised him \u201cI will make your descendents great.\u201d\u00a0 He became a great nation.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was all in response to his faith: trusting God that, that mighty nation occurred.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was a flawed man.\u00a0 He messed up along the way, but he pursued his relationship with God.\u00a0 He exercised faith, and God blessed him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Is there another that comes to your mind?\u00a0 Just waiting to see until you come up with the right one. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter) \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNot that Abraham was a bad one.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think of Mary and Joseph; but that was not the one, you are thinking of either.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That wasn\u2019t either.\u00a0 That was a good legacy, though.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes. You think of\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think so.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You think of their faithfulness and what went on there.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I will give you a hint.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Give me a hint. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 This broadcast can only go so long.\u00a0 He was a king.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I would think of King David\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The great king of Israel.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What do you discern about his legacy?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here is what has always been interesting to me about David.\u00a0 Mighty man, great faith, referred to in the Scriptures as \u201cthe man after God\u2019s own heart,\u201d who stumbled badly as a parent, apparently\u2014\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 As a husband, obviously.\u00a0 As a result, his latter years were sad.\u00a0 His legacy\u2014he was always remembered as the great king of Israel.\u00a0 They needed a king like David; but in terms of his family and his family tree, there was a lot of bitter fruit that was born by his decisions.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 His life is summarized in Acts 13:36.\u00a0 It is a verse that I have quoted a couple of times in this series on legacies.\u00a0 It says, \u201cAfter David had served the purposes of God in his generation, he slept.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, here is a summary of a man whose life was checkered with successes and failures when it comes to God\u2019s opinion of life.\u00a0 Yet, when God summarizes his life in a dozen words or so, it says David was a part of accomplishing what God did in his generation.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI take heart at that because I think we all are flawed.\u00a0 We have all made some stupid, foolish choices that mark us even today.\u00a0 Our God is a God of great grace and mercy.\u00a0 It is what the Cross of Christ and what the gospel of Jesus Christ is all about.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe went to the Cross to die for our sins; so, we could have right standing before Him, have our sins forgiven.\u00a0 So that as we live out our lives\u2014even if we have messed up with some huge decisions in the past maybe a divorce, maybe infidelity\u2014God is greater than those poor decisions.\u00a0 He can not necessarily overrule those decisions, but He can use you despite those decisions for His glory and His purposes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 There may be consequences from those decisions that follow us through our lives.\u00a0 I think of the passage in Isaiah where it talks about God bringing beauty from ashes.\u00a0 That really is the story of each one of our lives as God brings redemption to the ash pile that we offer.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how people who live life today, live without a faith in God.\u00a0 As you review your history and your mistakes, and you are reminded of where you have fallen short\u2014maybe they deny that, maybe that don\u2019t review, maybe they don\u2019t rehearse those mistakes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis, to me, is our hope that there is a God who does wash us white as snow and gives us a purpose for our lives.\u00a0 Even to take what mistakes we have made and use them for good because we are called according to His purposes.\u00a0 Our decisions are based on our worldview.\u00a0 Our convictions about what God says about life or what the world says about life.\u00a0 Some of us just buy into what the world says.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Or what our flesh says, or the little voice we hear whispering in our ear says \u201ccome this way.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to read you something that is unfortunately a great illustration of this.\u00a0 One of our speakers at our <em>Weekend to Remember\u00ae<\/em> marriage getaways led a conference recently and received an e-mail from one of the guest at the conference.\u00a0 They had been married only a short period of time, let me just read you what was written to this speaker.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cMy name is Jim.\u00a0 I was at the conference this past weekend with my wife Jennifer.\u201d\u00a0 By the way, I have changed the names here, and I have also changed a couple of facts about the number of years they have been married.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe says, \u201cI love my wife who I have been married to for six months. I also love a woman I have known for five years, who I truly care about.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what to do.\u00a0 I cannot keep myself from temptation.\u00a0 What should I do?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cI know I should focus on my wife.\u00a0 I can\u2019t.\u00a0 There are so many women who want me.\u00a0 I am too weak to resist.\u00a0 I love this other woman, especially.\u00a0 I cannot help myself.\u00a0 I want you to tell me the right thing.\u00a0 I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll listen, but I want to badly.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you think that young man is confused?\u00a0 Do you think he is being tempted?\u00a0 Do you think his life is in a vice?\u00a0 I mean, he has only been married for a few months, and he is already looking around or he has never stopped looking around.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You wish you could sit down with a young man like that and say let\u2019s follow the trail your decision making process is going to lead you on.\u00a0 Let\u2019s just follow the natural progression.\u00a0 If you choose this, here is where you are headed.\u00a0 If you choose this, this is where you are headed.\u00a0 That is your point as you talk about legacies.\u00a0 The decisions we are facing today will put us on the path either for a legacy that will be celebrated or one that will be ashamed of.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You just virtually captured, in essence, what the speaker said.\u00a0 I want you to know the speaker had evidently talked to this young man throughout the weekend because he shoots rather forthrightly and straight with him.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cDear Jim, I will tell you what God says you need to do.\u00a0 You heard it all weekend.\u201d\u00a0 He goes onto say, \u201cif you don\u2019t choose to respond, then it is simply a matter of big you, little God, and little everyone else.\u00a0 Frankly, I can summarize what you really need to do in two words. Grow up!\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exclamation point.\u00a0 \u201cYour commitment, Jim, is to you and your feelings.\u00a0 It is rooted in selfishness.\u00a0 Your wife is only secondary consideration in your comments to me.\u00a0 There are some deeply rooted problems in your heart that are allowing you to give such a strong foothold to the enemy.\u00a0 To be certain, his end is destruction, death, wasted life, and broken dreams.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tExactly what you said Bob.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u201cIf you really want to find peace and God\u2019s perfect purposes for your life, then you have to start by dying to yourself and living for your wife.\u201d\u00a0 He goes onto share the gospel with this young man and explains how he can die to himself and ultimately give up his life for his wife by placing his faith in Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI look at the letter, and I have to wonder, \u201cIs this young man a follower of Christ?\u00a0 Does he really understand who Christ is?\u201d\u00a0 If he does, then he is certainly being a disobedient son.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have heard me tell the story about me sitting down with my pastor years ago, and he shared with me about another man in our church who had just fallen to adultery.\u00a0 We were talking about the earthquake that was about to go off in that home.\u00a0 We were talking about the months and years of repair work that were going to have to be done in a marriage and a family because of an hour long indiscretion on the part of our friend.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember my pastor looking at me and saying, \u201cYou know, when you face a decision like this, you are not thinking about the months and the years or the legacy.\u00a0 You are just thinking about the immediate.\u201d\u00a0 I remember him also saying, \u201cAnd no sex is that good.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe is right.\u00a0 The decisions we face today can echo through the decades and can be felt by generations to come.\u00a0 That is why, to choose obedience and to choose to respond in faith is always the path that will lead toward the kind of legacy you\u2019ll celebrate later in life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 These decisions we are talking about, Bob\u2014when you step over the line morally, it is like setting off an atomic bomb.\u00a0 Yes, there is the initial devastation, but there is also the half life.\u00a0 The nuclear fallout and radiation that in this case as you\u2019re talking about, is going to be felt for generations that follow.\u00a0 They have no idea how that is going to impact a grandson, a granddaughter on down the line.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe point is we can\u2019t base our lives on our feelings.\u00a0 We have to base them upon convictions that are anchored in the Bible, the Word of God, Scriptures.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere are three areas that for me, as a man, that I just look at; and I think, \u201cI want to leave a legacy to my children and my grandchildren around this subject.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first one is around making a decision to love people, who quite honestly if I was to allow my flesh to go where it would like to go, quite honestly, it would like to hate them.\u00a0 I have been wounded by a person in my life repeatedly.\u00a0 Family members have observed this.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI recently had one of my adult children come to me and say, \u201cDad, why don\u2019t you just get ticked?\u201d\u00a0 I could almost hear my mom.\u00a0 My mom had a phrase that you don\u2019t hear used today.\u00a0 My mom used to say, \u201cWell, I just told her off.\u201d\u00a0 Just tell somebody off.\u00a0 In other words, you are giving them a piece of your mind that you can afford to lose.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just let it rip.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Just let it rip.\u00a0 I look back at the family member who said this to me; and I said, \u201cI have not loved this person perfectly.\u00a0 I am not standing as some kind of self righteous, smug\u2014feeling like I\u2019ve done everything perfectly in this situation, but I want you to know I have not given into hatred either.\u00a0 The gospel calls me to forgive.\u00a0 The gospel calls me not to take into account a wrong suffered.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI said, \u201cI just want you to know some day I am going to be gone, and you are going to remember me for a lot of things.\u00a0 I hope I will have passed on to you a legacy of love.\u00a0 Because I have seen the other kind of legacies passed on in families and it is not good.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tA second decision that is very determinative in our lives is who we choose to marry.\u00a0 Now, we have a lot of singles who listen to this broadcast.\u00a0 They typically hear us applying these principles to husbands and wives, moms and dads, and grandparents.\u00a0 I am going to apply this principle here to singles.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was recently having dinner with my mentor and friend Dr. Howard Hendricks.\u00a0 Over dinner I asked him the question, \u201cProf, what is the most courageous thing you\u2019ve done in your life?\u201d\u00a0 He got a sly grin on his face, and he looked back at me.\u00a0 He said, \u201cThat is easy.\u00a0 When I was in college, I was dating a young woman.\u00a0 I was having to make a decision to either do what my dad wanted me to do and go to college.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMaybe, I would imagine an Ivy League school.\u00a0 He was a very, very bright young man.\u00a0 His dad wanted to see him excel.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said \u201cI was dating a young lady who wanted me to go in that direction too because that represented her values as well.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI was convinced, though, that God was at work in my life wanting me to go to seminary.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI knew what my dad\u2019s response would be to that.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cI also knew what I had to do with this young lady because I couldn\u2019t marry her and take her to seminary because that didn\u2019t represent her values.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cI drove over to her house, and I told her that I decided to go to Dallas Theological Seminary.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cDennis, I had to pry her fingers off my car.\u00a0 So, I could drive away at the end of the discussion.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cIt was the most courageous thing I have ever done.\u201d\u00a0 Because he cared for the young lady and he had a history with her.\u00a0 He said, \u201cDriving away and then going back and telling my dad was the next most courageous thing.\u201d\u00a0 His dad\u2019s response was not positive either.\u00a0 He said, \u201cDennis, that was one of the most determinative decisions I have ever made in my life.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is what is remarkable about it, Bob.\u00a0 I was sitting at that dinner celebrating with him 60 years of teaching.\u00a0 I think he touched about 13,000 students.\u00a0 He marked their lives with a love for Christ.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThis ministry is, in many ways, a part of that decision he made on that day with that young lady.\u00a0 FamilyLife was really initially forged and formed by an idea that Professor Hendricks had in a message he gave in St. Louis in 1975, that resulted in this ministry.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYour decisions, your legacy is going to be felt for generations.\u00a0 I want to go back for just a moment to Bernie Madoff.\u00a0 A good name is better than riches.\u00a0 My dad, Hook Rainey had a good name and a great legacy.\u00a0 His legacy was one of integrity, honesty, fidelity.\u00a0 Hook Rainey was a quiet man whose life spoke volumes.\u00a0 The older I get the more I realize what a gift he gave me in giving me a good name.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow here is the question.\u00a0 What decision do you need to make right now that will impact your descendants, your legacy for generations?\u00a0 Is it about a choice outside of your marriage?\u00a0 Is it about a choice inside your marriage, a temptation?\u00a0 Is it about work?\u00a0 Is it about what is right or wrong?\u00a0 The question is what kind of name will you leave to your children?\u00a0 What kind of legacy will it represent?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I keep coming back to a chorus of a song that Sara Groves recorded a number of years ago where she said, \u201cRemind me of this: with every decision, generations will reap what I sow.\u00a0 I can pass on a curse or a blessing to those I will never know.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is a sobering reminder.\u00a0 It is a sobering thought that we are not the only ones who will be affected by the choices we make.\u00a0 Even with the decisions that seem to only impact us or decisions that we make that nobody else sees or knows about, those decisions shape who we are.\u00a0 Who we are is a part of what gets what passed on to the next generation.\u00a0 We need to think soberly about that with the choices that are in front of us today, whatever those choices might be.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think at the same time we need to recognize that our lives do matter in the eternal scheme of things.\u00a0 There is a purpose for which we were created our lives have meaning because God created us to have meaning.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs I sat down to watch the DVD that our friends at VeggieTales put together called <em>It\u2019s a Meaningful Life,<\/em> it is just a great reminder of the fact that you can lead what seems like an inconsequential life, a normal life\u2014where you do your job, you raise your kids, you are faithful to your wife\u2014 that may seem like I didn\u2019t do very much.\u00a0 You have no idea how profound that can be in the eternal
