and I'm Bob Lepine.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tRomans 5 says we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, endurance produces character, character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame because God\u2019s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us on the Tuesday edition.\u00a0 You know, as we have been talking about this subject, both last week and again this week, the subject of legacy\u2014honestly, I have been thinking a little bit about my favorite movie, <em>It\u2019s a Wonderful Life\u2014<\/em>George Bailey.<em>\u00a0 <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You find a way to make application out of that don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I also have been thinking about the new <em>Veggie Tales<\/em> video that is out where they kind of took that same story and did a spoof on it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Here is a guy had his life mapped out.\u00a0 He had his plan set.\u00a0 It just didn\u2019t work out.\u00a0 He got some real life thrown in to the middle of his plan that readjusted.\u00a0 I mean, I have just been thinking about George Bailey\u2019s legacy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe wanted to travel.\u00a0 See the world.\u00a0 He wanted to build things.\u00a0 He wound up living in Bedford Falls and almost committed suicide.\u00a0 So...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And he is not alone, Bob.\u00a0 There are a lot of people who have the vision of what they think their life is going to turn out to be.\u00a0 And there are some hiccups along the road of life that interrupt our vision and our dreams.\u00a0 In fact, I want to begin by just asking you:\u00a0 What do the following people have in common?\u00a0 Lucille Ball, <em>The Beatles.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Ulysses S. Grant, Michael Jordan, Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, and Abraham Lincoln.\u00a0 That is a pretty interesting group.\u00a0 I\u2019ll give you a hint\u2014it is not the same birthday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Alright?\u00a0 What they have in common is they all experienced dramatic failures.\u00a0 Lucille Ball was dismissed from drama school with a note that read:\u00a0 \u201cWasting your time\u2014too shy to put her best foot forward.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Shy?!\u00a0 She paid attention to the note and said, \u201cI\u2019ve got to fix that!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 <em>The<\/em> <em>Beatles <\/em>were turned down\u2014you probably knew this\u2014by Decca Recording Company who said, \u201cWe don\u2019t like their sound, and guitar music is on its way out.\u201d\u00a0 (laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Let me just suggest that that might not have been a failure for <em>The Beatles<\/em>; it was for Decca Records.\u00a0 (laughter)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team.\u00a0 He went home and locked himself in his room and cried.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Hard to imagine.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Thomas Edison\u2014a teacher told him he was too stupid to learn anything and he should go into a field he might succeed by virtue of his pleasant personality.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Walt Disney was fired from a newspaper because he lacked imagination and had no original ideas.\u00a0 I wonder if that publisher had any original ideas.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then Abraham Lincoln\u2014I have actually got a little chart here that many of our listeners have seen before... \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I have seen this, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>All of these are about a year apart.\u00a0 He lost his job, was defeated in a run for the Illinois state legislature, failed in business the next year, he finally was elected to the state legislature, then his sweetheart died, then he had a nervous breakdown.\u00a0 Can you believe we\u2019d elect a president back then who had had a nervous breakdown?\u00a0 I mean, that is pretty remarkable.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was defeated in a run for Illinois House Speaker, defeated for U.S. Congress.\u00a0 He then was elected to U.S. Congress, lost the re-nomination, then rejected for land officer for U.S. Senate, defeated in a run for nomination for Vice President, again defeated for U.S. Senate, and finally in 1860 he was elected President.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of these people experienced defeat, but they didn\u2019t let it define them.\u00a0 We have been talking about legacies.\u00a0 One of the things I want to talk to our listeners about today is about how you handle life\u2019s difficulties\u2014how you handle the challenges that come your way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to read from 1 Peter 2:21.\u00a0 This is pretty chilling here.\u00a0 It says, \u201cFor to this, you have been called.\u201d\u00a0 In other words, this is your assignment and mine \u201cbecause Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example so that you might follow in His steps.\u00a0 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in His mouth.\u00a0 While being reviled, He did not revile in return.\u00a0 When suffering, He did not threaten but continued entrusting Himself to Him Who judges justly.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So the passage is basically saying, \u201cYou can live a life that is perfect before God\u2014perfect obedience to what the Father calls you to\u2014doing everything that God would have you do...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>As Jesus did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And suffering will be a part of that life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Basically, the command of the Scripture was, \u201cYou have been called for this purpose\u2014therefore, do what Jesus did.\u00a0 Entrust your life to Him Who is going to end up judging your life at the end of time.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is the reality.\u00a0 All of us are going to experience mountain-tops in life.\u00a0 We love the mountain-top.\u00a0 We love the view up there.\u00a0 Who wouldn\u2019t love to live on top of the mountain?\u00a0 But, the mountain gains its definition from the valley.\u00a0 It is the valleys that God allows in our lives and takes us through that, I think, brings definition to our lives as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe key issue is:\u00a0 Are you going to do what Christ did?\u00a0 Are you going to keep entrusting yourself to your heavenly Father Who knows what is going on?\u00a0 Who is not making any mistakes here but Who is allowing certain things in your life\u2014bringing other things to your life and in the process is wanting to, I think, hammer out your legacy in your life through what you suffer and what you have to endure.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, Paul wrote to Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:7.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI want you to do your ministry.\u00a0 I want you to fulfill your calling.\u201d\u00a0 It is like it is in parenthesis in there.\u00a0 He says, \u201cAnd Timothy, endure hardship.\u00a0 Persevere under hardship because you are going to experience it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMost of us though, Bob, really don\u2019t think our lives are going to involve suffering.\u00a0 So when it happens, it is like, \u201cWhere did that come from?\u00a0 What is going on here?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>One of the people we have learned about suffering from\u2014who has been a model for how to stay faithful to Christ in the midst of suffering\u2014is Elisabeth Elliot.\u00a0 Her husband, Jim, was a missionary to the Auca Indians in Ecuador back in 1956.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe and others were martyred on the banks of the Curaray River.\u00a0 Elisabeth was a young wife and mother who was now a widow with a little baby and who was facing an unknown future.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 Her life, Bob, is part of why we interviewed her.\u00a0 She had three husbands and had actually been single more in her life than she had been married.\u00a0 I mean, she endured the loss of not only one husband, but a second husband and had remarried a third time.\u00a0 When you sit down with someone who has suffered much, what they have to say can be extremely profound.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We have a clip from that interview that I think gives some really helpful insights into this whole issue of suffering.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(from past interview)\u00a0 One of the themes of your books that seems to be in all of them is the call for the Christian to endure in the midst of suffering.\u00a0 You believe the Scripture calls us to remain faithful in the midst of circumstances that aren\u2019t working out to what we wish they would.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Suffering is a gift, Dennis.\u00a0 It is a gift.\u00a0 Paul says, \u201cUnto us it is given not only to believe, but also to suffer.\u201d\u00a0 And Jesusreferred to \u201cthe cup My Father has given Me.\u201d\u00a0 What was in that cup?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was reviled.\u00a0 He was persecuted.\u00a0 He was hated.\u00a0 He was mocked.\u00a0 He was captured.\u00a0 He was flogged.\u00a0 He was blindfolded.\u00a0 He was stripped and He was crucified.\u00a0 That was \u201cthe cup.\u201d\u00a0 And we know that His human nature was in agony over that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe sweat, as it were, great drops of blood in Gethsemane and finally He said, \u201cNot My will.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cIf it be possible, let this cup pass.\u201d\u00a0 The cup didn\u2019t pass.\u00a0 It was impossible because He could not save Himself and save you and me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That can be difficult, Elisabeth, for a person to grab hold of and then retain possession of.\u00a0 It is like a cross that they carry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That is exactly what it is.\u00a0 What do we expect the cross to look like?\u00a0 In what form do we expect the cross to be presented to us?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJesus said, \u201cIf you want to be My disciple\u2014you don\u2019t have to be; but if you want to be, these are the conditions:\u00a0 No. 1:\u00a0 Give up your right to yourself.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, that is difficult.\u00a0 It is the most difficult thing that God could ever ask of us, especially in today\u2019s climate where everybody says, \u201cIt is your life.\u00a0 It is your body.\u00a0 You have a right to yourself.\u00a0 If it feels good, do it.\u00a0 If it doesn\u2019t feel good, forget it.\u00a0 Don\u2019t let anybody tell you what to do.\u201d\u00a0 Jesus quietly continues to say to us, \u201cIf you want to be My disciple, you give up your right to yourself.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, \u201cTake up the cross.\u201d\u00a0 In what form is that going to be presented?\u00a0 It is going to be presented in the form of suffering.\u00a0 What else do we expect?\u00a0 The cross is an instrument of torture.\u00a0 Why should we be surprised?\u00a0 Of course, we are going to have to get down on our knees again and again and ratify that once-in-a-lifetime surrender. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere isn\u2019t a day that goes by, Dennis; and I am not exaggerating.\u00a0 There is not a day that goes by in which I do not consciously have to take up the cross in some form or other. \u201c\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, Bob, I get a big smile on my face; and I saw you did, too.\u00a0 I miss her.\u00a0 I really do miss Elisabeth and having a chance to talk with her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is a person who did suffer much.\u00a0 Elisabeth Elliot\u2014to lose a husband to martyrdom\u2014to losing his life because of his commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ\u2014 and then to take her daughter and go back into the people who murdered her husband in an attempt to reach them with the gospel.\u00a0 You talk about receiving the gift and then blessing those who curse you.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know that I could have done that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And her response to the suffering that she was experiencing shaped her legacy to the very point that you are talking about.\u00a0 The reason we were talking to her, the reason we remember her name, the reason she has influenced millions is because of how she responded to suffering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The book that tells the story of the loss of her husband and her suffering is called <em>Through Gates of Splendor<\/em>.\u00a0 What a title for a book!\u00a0 What a title for a story; and yet, when we are in the midst of a valley\u2014I\u2019ve been there; so have you\u2014we don\u2019t necessarily think of that\u2014that this is a part of my legacy.\u00a0 How I respond today to what I am facing\u2014the loss of a job, health issues\u2014I mean, Bob, you have faced cancer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I watched you respond to that\u2014both you and Mary Ann\u2014really remarkable.\u00a0 Your children will never forget that.\u00a0 That is a part of your legacy.\u00a0 There are folks here at FamilyLife who have heard you share about that and really stood back in awe of your faith\u2014your processing\u2014how you dealt with fear.\u00a0 It is a part of your legacy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was doing some thinking about this, and I just want to make three points about suffering and how you can view suffering so that in the end it can be a positive part of your legacy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first point is:\u00a0 You will suffer.\u00a0 You are going to suffer with small stuff, medium-sized stuff, and the big stuff; but you will suffer.\u00a0 Job 5:7 says\u2014that famous passage\u2014\u201cA man is born for trouble as the sparks fly upward.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We have a fire pit on our property; and on occasion, when it has been dry in the woods, I have not shown good discernment in burning some debris that had piled up that Barbara and I had cleaned out of our gardens and everything.\u00a0 It made a pretty good-sized fire.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And sparks fly up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The sparks go everywhere!\u00a0 I mean, frankly, at those times when I have been naive, I have set back going, \u201cYou big dummy!\u00a0 You are going to burn down the neighborhood.\u00a0 You are going to have a forest fire here.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that may be a little bit of what God may be saying here.\u00a0 When you start a fire, you need to have some sense of, \u201cYes, there are going to be sparks flying upwards.\u201d\u00a0 As you live life, \u201cYes, there is going to be some small stuff, some medium-sized stuff, and some big stuff.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would never have guessed that when Barbara and I were first married, we would go through two seasons of suffering that were really pretty-well defined.\u00a0 One was the year we started FamilyLife in 1976.\u00a0 In a 12- to 14-month period, my dad died.\u00a0 Barbara almost died.\u00a0 I thought I was having a heart attack.\u00a0 My brother had what was thought to be at the time an apparent heart attack.\u00a0 We had our son who had major surgery.\u00a0 We had financial challenges.\u00a0 There wasn\u2019t much more that could have gone wrong.\u00a0 Every area of our life was being touched.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, again, at the turn of the new millennium, the year was 2000.\u00a0 I wrote down a list of some of the trials that marked our lives.\u00a0 Again, this is a partial list.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have everything on here because it wouldn\u2019t be appropriate.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had some challenges with an adult child who made some choices that were costly.\u00a0 My mom died.\u00a0 I hired a person here at FamilyLife who ended up betraying me and creating some problems.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was trying to write a book on being a man, my wife curled up in a ball from the pain\u2014we weren\u2019t sure what\u2014but we had to fly her back here to Little Rock.\u00a0 It turned out to be a cyst on her ovaries.\u00a0 We then went through a period of time of wondering if it was cancerous or not.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had a person from another city who was trying to hurt me personally.\u00a0 Our daughter, Laura, was rejected at college by her closest friends.\u00a0 There was a cash flow crisis here at FamilyLife.\u00a0 Our personal support which we raise for our own salary\u2014we don\u2019t take anything from FamilyLife here\u2014was at a 20-year low.\u00a0 In the midst of all that, Barbara\u2019s car died.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou were there\u2014you watched us go through it.\u00a0 It was a season of one thing after another.\u00a0 We prayed\u2014I\u2019ll never forget a statement you made, Bob.\u00a0 We prayed that God would move FamilyLife to a new level of ministry and we would be able to impact tens of millions more people\u2019s lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou turned to me one day and said, \u201cYou know, just watching what you are going through\u2014you and your family\u2014kind of the Refiner\u2019s Fire that you are experiencing\u2014I\u2019m kind of rechecking whether I want to pray that prayer or not.\u00a0 You were just being honest; I mean, who would ask for that to come into your life?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The reality is:\u00a0 Your life will be marked by suffering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>For you guys, that was a valley in the midst of a roller coaster.\u00a0 There have been other valleys; but there have been peaks along the way, as well.\u00a0 I think of folks we have interviewed\u2014folks like Joni Toda for whom suffering has not been a seasonal occurrence\u2014it has been a lifelong occurrence.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\u00a0 That really leads me to my second observation about suffering.\u00a0 Some people will suffer for a short season of their lives while others are going to suffer all four seasons of their lives.\u00a0 Their lives will be marked by suffering.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJoni came to my mind as well.\u00a0 As a teenager, breaking her neck and being a quadriplegic all her adult life.\u00a0 She has modeled for the Christian community worldwide what it looks like for someone to entrust her life to the God Who is trustworthy, Who knows what He is doing.\u00a0 Spurgeon said\u2014and you could think about Joni Erickson Toda\u2019s life\u2014this could really describe her:\u00a0 \u201cSome men owe the grandeur of their lives to their many difficulties.\u201d\u00a0 Joni\u2019s life has a sense of grandeur about it, even though it has been lived in the valley.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>All of that brings us back to the question of how we choose to respond to trials or to suffering because that is what is going to determine what our legacy is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, and that is the third point.\u00a0 James 1:2-8 points out that, \u201cWe should count it all joy when we encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of our faith produces endurance, perseverance, maturity;\u201d but we have to respond in faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think of Corrie ten Boom being a person whose life was marked by suffering.\u00a0 She and her sister were imprisoned by Hitler\u2019s regime.\u00a0 Ultimately, she lost her sister to that prison.\u00a0 It was a story, really, of Corrie ten Boom having to forgive the prison guards.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is a powerful, compelling story of redemption and a picture of the gospel, Bob, of how God redeems us and seeks reconciliation with us as human beings.\u00a0 I think the question for every listener is this:\u00a0 Will you allow tragedy to define your life or will your decision be to respond to God and trust Him as you go through a season of difficulty?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is the application for you:\u00a0 What trial, what tragedy right now\u2014and maybe it is tragedies\u2014are you facing today that demand your faith in God?\u00a0 Some folks listening to this broadcast need to take a step back and do an inventory.\u00a0 They may need to make their own list of how the sparks have flown upward.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou just need to take a step back and say, \u201cLord, God, I am going to trust You with this.\u00a0 I am not going to let this define me.\u00a0 I am going to trust You and believe You that You are going to use this for Your purposes.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If you were sitting across the table from somebody in the midst of that, I can imagine that if you had a copy of Jerry Sittser\u2019s book right there, you would hand it to them, wouldn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I would.\u00a0 I would also give him a copy of the interview we did with Jerry.\u00a0 This is a man who lost his wife, his mother, and his four-year-old daughter in a tragic car wreck back in the early 90\u2019s.\u00a0 His response is unthinkable; it is so supernatural and empowered by God.\u00a0 Every person really needs to read this story or get the book and pass it on to a friend.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is the deal, Bob.\u00a0 Generations will be impacted by your response.\u00a0 People will be telling the story of Elisabeth Elliot and her faith for generations to come until Jesus Christ comes back to planet Earth.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, and I think it is helpful for us, to be ready for our own season of suffering, to read stories of how others have gone through it.\u00a0 You can get a book like the one that Jerry Sittser has written, that you mentioned, that we have in our <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> Resource Center; or you can get the interview with him that we did and listen to that together.\u00a0 You can get a copy of the book that your wife Barbara wrote with your daughter Rebecca after your family went through a season of suffering have been thinking a little bit about my favorite movie, <em>It\u2019s a Wonderful Life\u2014<\/em>George Bailey.<em>\u00a0 <\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You find a way to make application out of that don\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, I also have been thinking about the new <em>Veggie Tales<\/em> video that is out where they kind of took that same story and did a spoof on it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Here is a guy had his life mapped out.\u00a0 He had his plan set.\u00a0 It just didn\u2019t work out.\u00a0 He got some real life thrown in to the middle of his plan that readjusted.\u00a0 I mean, I have just been thinking about George Bailey\u2019s legacy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe wanted to travel.\u00a0 See the world.\u00a0 He wanted to build things.\u00a0 He wound up living in Bedford Falls and almost committed suicide.\u00a0 So...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And he is not alone, Bob.\u00a0 There are a lot of people who have the vision of what they think their life is going to turn out to be.\u00a0 And there are some hiccups along the road of life that interrupt our vision and our dreams.\u00a0 In fact, I want to begin by just asking you:\u00a0 What do the following people have in common?\u00a0 Lucille Ball, <em>The Beatles.<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<em>\u00a0<\/em>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Oh, man.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Ulysses S. Grant, Michael Jordan, Thomas Edison, Walt Disney, and Abraham Lincoln.\u00a0 That is a pretty interesting group.\u00a0 I\u2019ll give you a hint\u2014it is not the same birthday.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Okay.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Alright?\u00a0 What fired from a newspaper because he lacked imagination and had no original ideas.\u00a0 I wonder if that publisher had any original ideas.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then Abraham Lincoln\u2014I have actually got a little chart here that many of our listeners have seen before... \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I have seen this, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>All of these are about a year apart.\u00a0 He lost his job, was defeated in a run for the Illinois state legislature, failed in business the next year, he finally was elected to the state legislature, then his sweetheart died, then he had a nervous breakdown.\u00a0 Can you believe we\u2019d elect a president back then who had had a nervous breakdown?\u00a0 I mean, that is pretty remarkable.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was defeated in a run for Illinois House Speaker, defeated for U.S. Congress.\u00a0 He then was elected to U.S. Congress, lost the re-nomination, then rejected for land officer for U.S. Senate, defeated in a run for nomination for Vice President, again defeated for U.S. Senate, and finally in 1860 he was elected President.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAll of these people experienced defeat, but they didn\u2019t let it define them.\u00a0 We have been talking about legacies.\u00a0 One of the things I want to talk to our listeners about today is about how you handle life\u2019s difficulties\u2014how you handle the challenges that come your way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI want to read from 1 Peter 2:21.\u00a0 This is pretty chilling here.\u00a0 It says, \u201cFor to this, you have been called.\u201d\u00a0 In other words, this is your assignment and mine \u201cbecause Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example so that you might follow in His steps.\u00a0 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in His mouth.\u00a0 While being reviled, He did not revile in return.\u00a0 When suffering, He did not threaten but continued entrusting Himself to Him Who judges justly.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>So the passage is basically saying, \u201cYou can live a life that is perfect before God\u2014perfect obedience to what the Father calls you to\u2014doing everything that God would have you do...\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>As Jesus did.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And suffering will be a part of that life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Basically, the command of the Scripture was, \u201cYou have been called for this purpose\u2014therefore, do what Jesus did.\u00a0 Entrust your life to Him Who is going to end up judging your life at the end of time.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is the reality.\u00a0 All of us are going to experience mountain-tops in life.\u00a0 We love the mountain-top.\u00a0 We love the view up there.\u00a0 Who wouldn\u2019t love to live on top of the mountain?\u00a0 But, the mountain gains its definition from the valley.\u00a0 It is the valleys that God allows in our lives and takes us through that, I think, brings definition to our lives as well.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe key issue is:\u00a0 Are you going to do what Christ did?\u00a0 Are you going to keep entrusting yourself to your heavenly Father Who knows what is going on?\u00a0 Who is not making any mistakes here but Who is allowing certain things in your life\u2014bringing other things to your life and in the process is wanting to, I think, hammer out your legacy in your life through what you suffer and what you have to endure.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn fact, Paul wrote to Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:7.\u00a0 He said, \u201cI want you to do your ministry.\u00a0 I want you to fulfill your calling.\u201d\u00a0 It is like it is in parenthesis in there.\u00a0 He says, \u201cAnd Timothy, endure hardship.\u00a0 Persevere under hardship because you are going to experience it.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMost of us though, Bob, really don\u2019t think our lives are going to involve suffering.\u00a0 So when it happens, it is like, \u201cWhere did that come from?\u00a0 What is going on here?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>One of the people we have learned about suffering from\u2014who has been a model for how to stay faithful to Christ in the midst of suffering\u2014is Elisabeth Elliot.\u00a0 Her husband, Jim, was a missionary to the Auca Indians in Ecuador back in 1956.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe and others were martyred on the banks of the Curaray River.\u00a0 Elisabeth was a young wife and mother who was now a widow with a little baby and who was facing an unknown future.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 Her life, Bob, is part of why we interviewed her.\u00a0 She had three husbands and had actually been single more in her life than she had been married.\u00a0 I mean, she endured the loss of not only one husband, but a second husband and had remarried a third time.\u00a0 When you sit down with someone who has suffered much, what they have to say can be extremely profound.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We have a clip from that interview that I think gives some really helpful insights into this whole issue of suffering.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>(from past interview)\u00a0 One of the themes of your books that seems to be in all of them is the call for the Christian to endure in the midst of suffering.\u00a0 You believe the Scripture calls us to remain faithful in the midst of circumstances that aren\u2019t working out to what we wish they would.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Suffering is a gift, Dennis.\u00a0 It is a gift.\u00a0 Paul says, \u201cUnto us it is given not only to believe, but also to suffer.\u201d\u00a0 And Jesusreferred to \u201cthe cup My Father has given Me.\u201d\u00a0 What was in that cup?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe was reviled.\u00a0 He was persecuted.\u00a0 He was hated.\u00a0 He was mocked.\u00a0 He was captured.\u00a0 He was flogged.\u00a0 He was blindfolded.\u00a0 He was stripped and He was crucified.\u00a0 That was \u201cthe cup.\u201d\u00a0 And we know that His human nature was in agony over that.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe sweat, as it were, great drops of blood in Gethsemane and finally He said, \u201cNot My will.\u201d\u00a0 He said, \u201cIf it be possible, let this cup pass.\u201d\u00a0 The cup didn\u2019t pass.\u00a0 It was impossible because He could not save Himself and save you and me.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That can be difficult, Elisabeth, for a person to grab hold of and then retain possession of.\u00a0 It is like a cross that they carry.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Elisabeth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>That is exactly what it is.\u00a0 What do we expect the cross to look like?\u00a0 In what form do we expect the cross to be presented to us?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJesus said, \u201cIf you want to be My disciple\u2014you don\u2019t have to be; but if you want to be, these are the conditions:\u00a0 No. 1:\u00a0 Give up your right to yourself.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tOf course, that is difficult.\u00a0 It is the most difficult thing that God could ever ask of us, especially in today\u2019s climate where everybody says, \u201cIt is your life.\u00a0 It is your body.\u00a0 You have a right to yourself.\u00a0 If it feels good, do it.\u00a0 If it doesn\u2019t feel good, forget it.\u00a0 Don\u2019t let anybody tell you what to do.\u201d\u00a0 Jesus quietly continues to say to us, \u201cIf you want to be My disciple, you give up your right to yourself.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSecondly, \u201cTake up the cross.\u201d\u00a0 In what form is that going to be presented?\u00a0 It is going to be presented in the form of suffering.\u00a0 What else do we expect?\u00a0 The cross is an instrument of torture.\u00a0 Why should we be surprised?\u00a0 Of course, we are going to have to get down on our knees again and again and ratify that once-in-a-lifetime surrender. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThere isn\u2019t a day that goes by, Dennis; and I am not exaggerating.\u00a0 There is not a day that goes by in which I do not consciously have to take up the cross in some form or other. \u201c\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You know, Bob, I get a big smile on my face; and I saw you did, too.\u00a0 I miss her.\u00a0 I really do miss Elisabeth and having a chance to talk with her.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is a person who did suffer much.\u00a0 Elisabeth Elliot\u2014to lose a husband to martyrdom\u2014to losing his life because of his commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ\u2014 and then to take her daughter and go back into the people who murdered her husband in an attempt to reach them with the gospel.\u00a0 You talk about receiving the gift and then blessing those who curse you.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know that I could have done that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And her response to the suffering that she was experiencing shaped her legacy to the very point that you are talking about.\u00a0 The reason we were talking to her, the reason we remember her name, the reason she has influenced millions is because of how she responded to suffering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The book that tells the story of the loss of her husband and her suffering is called <em>Through Gates of Splendor<\/em>.\u00a0 What a title for a book!\u00a0 What a title for a story; and yet, when we are in the midst of a valley\u2014I\u2019ve been there; so have you\u2014we don\u2019t necessarily think of that\u2014that this is a part of my legacy.\u00a0 How I respond today to what I am facing\u2014the loss of a job, health issues\u2014I mean, Bob, you have faced cancer.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I watched you respond to that\u2014both you and Mary Ann\u2014really remarkable.\u00a0 Your children will never forget that.\u00a0 That is a part of your legacy.\u00a0 There are folks here at FamilyLife who have heard you share about that and really stood back in awe of your faith\u2014your processing\u2014how you dealt with fear.\u00a0 It is a part of your legacy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was doing some thinking about this, and I just want to make three points about suffering and how you can view suffering so that in the end it can be a positive part of your legacy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe first point is:\u00a0 You will suffer.\u00a0 You are going to suffer with small stuff, medium-sized stuff, and the big stuff; but you will suffer.\u00a0 Job 5:7 says\u2014that famous passage\u2014\u201cA man is born for trouble as the sparks fly upward.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>We have a fire pit on our property; and on occasion, when it has been dry in the woods, I have not shown good discernment in burning some debris that had piled up that Barbara and I had cleaned out of our gardens and everything.\u00a0 It made a pretty good-sized fire.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And sparks fly up?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The sparks go everywhere!\u00a0 I mean, frankly, at those times when I have been naive, I have set back going, \u201cYou big dummy!\u00a0 You are going to burn down the neighborhood.\u00a0 You are going to have a forest fire here.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that may be a little bit of what God may be saying here.\u00a0 When you start a fire, you need to have some sense of, \u201cYes, there are going to be sparks flying upwards.\u201d\u00a0 As you live life, \u201cYes, there is going to be some small stuff, some medium-sized stuff, and some big stuff.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI would never have guessed that when Barbara and I were first married, we would go through two seasons of suffering that were really pretty-well defined.\u00a0 One was the year we started FamilyLife in 1976.\u00a0 In a 12- to 14-month period, my dad died.\u00a0 Barbara almost died.\u00a0 I thought I was having a heart attack.\u00a0 My brother had what was thought to be at the time an apparent heart attack.\u00a0 We had our son who had major surgery.\u00a0 We had financial challenges.\u00a0 There wasn\u2019t much more that could have gone wrong.\u00a0 Every area of our life was being touched.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThen, again, at the turn of the new millennium, the year was 2000.\u00a0 I wrote down a list of some of the trials that marked our lives.\u00a0 Again, this is a partial list.\u00a0 I don\u2019t have everything on here because it wouldn\u2019t be appropriate.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe had some challenges with an adult child who made some choices that were costly.\u00a0 My mom died.\u00a0 I hired a person here at FamilyLife who ended up betraying me and creating some problems.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen I was trying to write a book on being a man, my wife curled up in a ball from the pain\u2014we weren\u2019t sure what\u2014but we had to fly her back here to Little Rock.\u00a0 It turned out to be a cyst on her ovaries.\u00a0 We then went through a period of time of wondering if it was cancerous or not.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had a person from another city who was trying to hurt me personally.\u00a0 Our daughter, Laura, was rejected at college by her closest friends.\u00a0 There was a cash flow crisis here at FamilyLife.\u00a0 Our personal support which we raise for our own salary\u2014we don\u2019t take anything from FamilyLife here\u2014was at a 20-year low.\u00a0 In the midst of all that, Barbara\u2019s car died.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou were there\u2014you watched us go through it.\u00a0 It was a season of one thing after another.\u00a0 We prayed\u2014I\u2019ll never forget a statement you made, Bob.\u00a0 We prayed that God would move FamilyLife to a new level of ministry and we would be able to impact tens of millions more people\u2019s lives.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou turned to me one day and said, \u201cYou know, just watching what you are going through\u2014you and your family\u2014kind of the Refiner\u2019s Fire that you are experiencing\u2014I\u2019m kind of rechecking whether I want to pray that prayer or not.\u00a0 You were just being honest; I mean, who would ask for that to come into your life?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>The reality is:\u00a0 Your life will be marked by suffering.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>For you guys, that was a valley in the midst of a roller coaster.\u00a0 There have been other valleys; but there have been peaks along the way, as well.\u00a0 I think of folks we have interviewed\u2014folks like Joni Toda for whom suffering has not been a seasonal occurrence\u2014it has been a lifelong occurrence.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Right.\u00a0 That really leads me to my second observation about suffering.\u00a0 Some people will suffer for a short season of their lives while others are going to suffer all four seasons of their lives.\u00a0 Their lives will be marked by suffering.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tJoni came to my mind as well.\u00a0 As a teenager, breaking her neck and being a quadriplegic all her adult life.\u00a0 She has modeled for the Christian community worldwide what it looks like for someone to entrust her life to the God Who is trustworthy, Who knows what He is doing.\u00a0 Spurgeon said\u2014and you could think about Joni Erickson Toda\u2019s life\u2014this could really describe her:\u00a0 \u201cSome men owe the grandeur of their lives to their many difficulties.\u201d\u00a0 Joni\u2019s life has a sense of grandeur about it, even though it has been lived in the valley.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>All of that brings us back to the question of how we choose to respond to trials or to suffering because that is what is going to determine what our legacy is.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, and that is the third point.\u00a0 James 1:2-8 points out that, \u201cWe should count it all joy when we encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of our faith produces endurance, perseverance, maturity;\u201d but we have to respond in faith.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think of Corrie ten Boom being a person whose life was marked by suffering.\u00a0 She and her sister were imprisoned by Hitler\u2019s regime.\u00a0 Ultimately, she lost her sister to that prison.\u00a0 It was a story, really, of Corrie ten Boom having to forgive the prison guards.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is a powerful, compelling story of redemption and a picture of the gospel, Bob, of how God redeems us and seeks reconciliation with us as human beings.\u00a0 I think the question for every listener is this:\u00a0 Will you allow tragedy to define your life or will your decision be to respond to God and trust Him as you go through a season of difficulty?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is the application for you:\u00a0 What trial, what tragedy right now\u2014and maybe it is tragedies\u2014are you facing today that demand your faith in God?\u00a0 Some folks listening to this broadcast need to take a step back and do an inventory.\u00a0 They may need to make their own list of how the sparks have flown upward.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tYou just need to take a step back and say, \u201cLord, God, I am going to trust You with this.\u00a0 I am not going to let this define me.\u00a0 I am going to trust You and believe You that You are going to use this for Your purposes.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>If you were sitting across the table from somebody in the midst of that, I can imagine that if you had a copy of Jerry Sittser\u2019s book right there, you would hand it to them, wouldn\u2019t you?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I would.\u00a0 I would also give him a copy of the interview we did with Jerry.\u00a0 This is a man who lost his wife, his mother, and his four-year-old daughter in a tragic car wreck back in the early 90\u2019s.\u00a0 His response is unthinkable; it is so supernatural and empowered by God.\u00a0 Every person really needs to read this story or get the book and pass it on to a friend.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHere is the deal, Bob.\u00a0 Generations will be impacted by your response.\u00a0 People will be telling the story of Elisabeth Elliot and her faith for generations to come until Jesus Christ comes back to planet Earth.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, and I think it is helpful for us, to be ready for our own season of suffering, to read stories of how others have gone through it.\u00a0 You can get a book like the one that Jerry Sittser has written, that you mentioned, that we have in our <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> Resource Center; or you can get the interview
