the \u2018DASH\u2019 on a tombstone.\u00a0 Fifty years from now, or 100 years from now, will your life have been worth more than a dash?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It is not the grand accomplishments or the goals that we set.\u00a0 Those are important and I don\u2019t want to diminish them.\u00a0 I have enjoyed my work here at FamilyLife and the privilege of leading a ministry, but I believe that a man and a woman\u2019s legacy is much larger than the tasks that they have done.\u00a0 It is about the people that they have loved and about the lives they have impacted.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>.\u00a0 Thanks for joining us on the Monday edition October 4<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey and I am Bob Lepine.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was Lee Ann Womack singing about a legacy and actually that helped me out because when I came in here I thought we are going to be talking about legacies, and the first time I have ever heard that word \u2018LEGACY\u2019 was when my sister was going through sorority rush.\u00a0 You know the term, right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do!\u00a0\u00a0 (Laughing)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 My mom was and Alpha PHI and so when my sister was going through rush, I asked my mom, \u201cWill she be an Alpha PHI?\u201d\u00a0 And my mom said,\u201dWell, she is a legacy.\u201d\u00a0 I did not know what that meant.\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWhat it means is that they pretty much have to invite her if she wants to be an Alpha PHI because \u2026.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She is connected! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Connected by the past.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was really the first time I had ever heard that word or have any conscience memory so I have always associated the word with sororities and fraternities.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Well, we are going to broaden your perspective today of legacy because I think all of us; first of all, are given a legacy.\u00a0 Secondly, all of us I believe are called by God to leave a legacy.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, let\u2019s just take a step back for a moment.\u00a0 If you had to summarize, Bob, the legacy that you were given as a man by your mom and dad and your family, how would you describe that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is hard to summarize it and put it in just a few words.\u00a0 I mean, when I think in the terms that you have talked about often when you talk about parenting assignment, shaping our children\u2019s character, helping them understand their identity, relationships and mission.\u00a0 So when I think of the legacy I have received I think of some of the character issues that were built into my life.\u00a0 I think of some of the relational development that happened when I was growing up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is kind of the whole package of how your thinking is shaped in the environment that you grow up in.\u00a0 I think for example about things like my mom being very big on telling the truth.\u00a0 You tell the truth!\u00a0 You always tell the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you hear your mom\u2019s voice today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, I can hear it in the back of my mind and saying, \u201cAlways tell the truth.\u201d\u00a0 It is a part of the legacy that I think that I was given.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 All those things build into our lives; as you said, \u201cCharacter qualities, the ability to relate to another person, and they help us become the person that we are.\u201d\u00a0 I did some reflecting on the legacy that my parents left me and I wrote down.\u00a0 It was a good legacy, not evil.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dad was a good man.\u00a0 He was kind.\u00a0 He was generous.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t cheat people.\u00a0 He paid his bills on time.\u00a0 Sometimes I think when we consider the concept of legacy we think there has to be something high and mighty and noble.\u00a0 Well, certainly it needs to be above the muck and the mire of those matters that are sinful, but sometimes it is just good qualities of a solid character.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Would you say that the legacy that you received from your parents was intentionally transmitted or was it more caught than taught?\u00a0 Was is just them living out their lives in front of you and you observing, or were they purposeful about what they did?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is a good question.\u00a0 I think in all honesty, I don\u2019t think my mom and dad probably ever had a planning meeting or a couples get-away or a family get-away where they talked about our family\u2019s mission statement and\u00a0 what we were going to be about and what we were going to try to leave to the next generation.\u00a0 They just lived it and did it.\u00a0 It was caught.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it was also taught too; purposefully, both my mom and dad taught Sunday school and Church and taught the scriptures to young people.\u00a0 They were intentional about teaching, but I don\u2019t ever recall having a formal family time; a time where you get together as a family and sit down and study the scriptures together.\u00a0 I just think as they lived their lives they were very real people who lived authentic lives that there just wasn\u2019t a lot of plastic or veneer.\u00a0 What you saw in them was really who they were. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do think it gives couples an edge if they do approach this subject with a little more intentionality; a little more purposefulness?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that is why I want to talk about this.\u00a0 All of us are in the process of leaving a legacy to the next generation.\u00a0 Now the question is, \u201cWhat is that going to look like?\u00a0 What is going to be the gift you give to your descendants?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPicture it like a present that will be unwrapped over their lifetime.\u00a0 The gifts you give them; those character qualities you impart, the memories of fun, and laughter, and just enjoying one another and enjoying a family.\u00a0 Those can all be a part of a magnificent, yet intentional gift that you do pass on to the next generation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I think what would be a real good second project for a person to complete; is not only to write down the legacy you were given, but as you listen to us talk about this today, begin to jot down what do you want your legacy to look like?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I am going to tell you what I did with a group of men and you are going to think this is kind of weird, but if you have listened to our broadcast over the years you know that we kind of like to surprise people from time to time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had a men\u2019s retreat where there was only a dozen guys that I was leading this get-away for three full days.\u00a0 When they arrived in the remote location where we were meeting in their bedroom, propped up on the pillow in their bed was a tombstone.\u00a0 It was a cardboard tombstone and it had their name on it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor instance:\u00a0 it would have Bob Lepine with the birth-date and a dash, and then it was empty.\u00a0 For the next three days we talked about the legacies that we wanted to leave to the next generation and we talked about what we wanted to have etched on our tombstone.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn reality, Bob, I think God calls us to etch our lives not on tombstones, but on people\u2019s hearts.\u00a0 I think he calls us to impact people!\u00a0 That is our legacy!\u00a0 It is not the grand accomplishments or the goals that we set.\u00a0 Those are important I don\u2019t want to diminish them.\u00a0 I have enjoyed my work here at FamilyLife and the privilege of leading a ministry, but I believe that a man and a woman\u2019s legacy is much larger than the tasks that they have done.\u00a0 It is about the people that they have loved and about the lives that they have impacted. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is why I just want to lift your eyes up a little bit and I want you to picture that tombstone with your name on it and that \u2018DASH.\u2019\u00a0 And then picture what could be written underneath those dates when you die?\u00a0 What do you want to be written?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs you look at the Bible, it is really fascinating.\u00a0 The word legacy is not found anywhere in scripture.\u00a0 Heritage is found!\u00a0 In fact, Proverbs 13:22 says, \u201cA good man leaves an inheritance to his children\u2019s children, but the sinner\u2019s wealth, is laid up for the righteous.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 There is another passage in Proverbs 10:7 that says, \u201cThe memory of the righteous is blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow there is a contrast between; in a very simple form, two different types of legacies--The righteous or good person and the wicked or an evil person.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have a feeling, Bob; we are talking to a lot of good people here on the radio.\u00a0 They are in the process of leaving a legacy to the next generation and we just want to come alongside of them and help them be more effective in leading the very finest legacy on the next generation that they possibly can.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Your tombstone illustration reminds me of something many of our listeners may have read in Stephen Covey\u2019s book, <em>The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.<\/em>\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe has a very provocative scene where you are attending a funeral and you step forward and you all of a sudden realize that it is your own funeral and he wants you to imagine that it is 7 years from today and you are attending your funeral and 3 people are going to provide eulogies; someone from your family, somebody from your workplace, and somebody from the community, church or wherever you have lived life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cIf it was your funeral today, what would they say about you?\u00a0 If it was your funeral 7 years from now, what do you wish they would say about you and what can you be doing now so that what they say is what you would hope they would say?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right!\u00a0 There is so much about life that comes at us and we just react and we respond and we are not real intentional.\u00a0 You had a slight smile on your face when you asked me the question about, \u201cDid I think my parent\u2019s legacy that they left me was intentional or was it just a part of who they were as they lived their lives.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason is, (for your smile) I know, you know a story that I am about to tell here\u2026..:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was at a Cardinal Baseball game in their new stadium, a friend of mine invited my son and me to go to a game up there\u2026. Boy!\u00a0 We had some good tickets, Bob!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, just rub it in.\u00a0 Thank you! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 I know you are a big Cardinal fan, too!\u00a0 Anyway, as we were at the game, my friend turned to my son and he said, \u201cWhat one word would you use to describe your father?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I thought, \u201cThis is going to be good,\u201d as my mind raced.\u00a0 My son just took a second to gather his thoughts and in that length of time I thought of all the words I wished he would say.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t say any of them!\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t any of the words I expected!\u00a0\u00a0 He said, \u201cOh that is easy!\u00a0\u00a0 INTENTIONAL!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I went, \u201cGive me a break \u2013 that is the best word you can come up with for me?\u201d\u00a0 I really kind of pushed back at that point and honestly I felt a little wounded that that was as good of word that could be used to describe my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut since that time I have had some opportunity to reflect on that, plus to confirm it with the other five children who have all nodded their heads and said, \u201cDad that really does kind of describe you a bit.\u201d\u00a0 I have come to the conclusion that \u2018INTENTIONAL\u2019 is not a really bad word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you are \u2018INTENTIONAL\u2019 about the right things.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Have good intentions, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you have good intentions.\u00a0 That is where this Book that we have opened in front of us here comes in to play.\u00a0 The Bible is calling us to live an intentional life.\u00a0 To be intentional about obeying Him, coming to know Him, placing our faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior, Lord and Master and following Him.\u00a0\u00a0 Consulting Him intentionally about major decisions and minor decisions that we make in life.\u00a0 In the process of all those intentional decisions that we make; if we have kept this Book as the plumb-line and we have listened to God and for the most part followed Him, you can leave a powerful legacy!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have been impacted by some men and women who have done that and again, you don\u2019t have to be in the ministry, you don\u2019t have to be a pastor or a teacher or a writer of books or a radio show.\u00a0 You just need to live an obedient life to what the Master called you to do.\u00a0 He can use you to impact generations!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you have said that we are all going to leave a legacy and it is either a legacy for good or a legacy of mediocrity or a legacy of evil.\u00a0 Do you think there is a universal sense in the heart of man as to what that legacy ought to be?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you think there is something inside each one of us where we affirm together what ought to be the core elements of the legacy any one of us passes on to the next generation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I would hope that in our hearts we have this longing to leave a legacy of goodness to the next generation.\u00a0 But as I think of some of the legacies that men have left, you had to wonder what was taking place in their hearts?\u00a0 For instance, what would you say is the legacy of Hitler?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, if you stop and think about what he is remembered for and what he is known for it is evil.\u00a0 It is death and destruction and really evil is the best word I can come up with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 You wonder, what took place in his life for him as a man to lose his sense of goodness and become so narcissistic and self-centered that he didn\u2019t want to leave some kind of powerful legacy of goodness to his people and to the nation he attempted to lead.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I guess he thought that if he could annihilate the Jewish race, and have an Aryan nation that he was leaving something good.\u00a0 It is just that his priorities were twisted.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think so!\u00a0 Let me ask you about another legacy that was left.\u00a0 How would you describe the legacy of Winston Churchill?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Certainly, if I lived in the British Empire I would describe it as preserving.\u00a0 He led with courage in Europe\u2019s darkest hour.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was a courageous leader of a nation.\u00a0 He knew how to make a tough decision even when everyone didn\u2019t agree with him and you sure can\u2019t disagree with where he ended up taking the British people.\u00a0 He ended up getting the American people involved and ultimately saving that nation.\u00a0\u00a0 Those two legacies, I think are just good reminders that we can leave a legacy of evil to succeeding generations.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, one thing I want to point out Bob, that I think is very, very important.\u00a0 I know that a number of our listeners feel like they have failed in their journey in life.\u00a0 Maybe it was when they were a young person growing up; they made some decisions that were wrong.\u00a0 Perhaps as adults they have gone through some things, experienced some things, and made some choices that they feel like they are going to mark the next generation with their choices in a negative way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe story of Christianity and of Jesus Christ is that He redeems!\u00a0 He takes our failures and He delights in taking our ashes and the ash-heap of our lives and carving in to something noble and good.\u00a0 It is to me why Jesus Christ stands out above any other man who has walked the planet.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe offered, not only the route to God through His death on the cross and resurrection and ascension into heaven, but He offered us redemption right now!\u00a0 As we live life and make mistakes He promises to be able to take those wrong choices and we can learn from then and we can pass on to future generations\u2019 lessons they might not have been able to learn if we had not warned them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The message of the gospel is a message of forgiveness for our broken past, transformation for a different today, and then hope for a future that is what God intends \u2013 a future of blessing for us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And who doesn\u2019t want that?\u00a0 As we wrap up today, I want to just want to challenge the listener today to do two things:\u00a0 sit down with a piece of paper and just jot out what you think was the legacy that you were given by your parents and by your family.\u00a0 Just write it out!\u00a0 Let it be what it is!\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then secondly I want you to begin to craft and work with and think about how you intentionally (to go back to that word), how you can intentionally leave a legacy of righteousness, godliness and goodness to future generations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are you going to be handing out a lot of assignments as we talk about this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 I think I may!\u00a0 I want this to be practical.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because I am trying to decide do I want to keep listening based on the number of assignments I am going to be getting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Do you feel that this is too hard?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want to know what I am getting myself into?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have listened to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, Bob; the Monday edition October 4<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0\u00a0 Our host is the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey and I am Bob Lepine.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat was Lee Ann Womack singing about a legacy and actually that helped me out because when I came in here I thought we are going to be talking about legacies, and the first time I have ever heard that word \u2018LEGACY\u2019 was when my sister was going through sorority rush.\u00a0 You know the term, right?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I do!\u00a0\u00a0 (Laughing)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 My mom was and Alpha PHI and so when my sister was going through rush, I asked my mom, \u201cWill she be an Alpha PHI?\u201d\u00a0 And my mom said,\u201dWell, she is a legacy.\u201d\u00a0 I did not know what that meant.\u00a0 I said, \u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d\u00a0 She said, \u201cWhat it means is that they pretty much have to invite her if she wants to be an Alpha PHI because \u2026.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 She is connected! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Yes! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Connected by the past.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 That was really the first time I had ever heard that word or have any conscience memory so I have always associated the word with sororities and fraternities.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Well, we are going to broaden your perspective today of legacy because I think all of us; first of all, are given a legacy.\u00a0 Secondly, all of us I believe are called by God to leave a legacy.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, let\u2019s just take a step back for a moment.\u00a0 If you had to summarize, Bob, the legacy that you were given as a man by your mom and dad and your family, how would you describe that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is hard to summarize it and put it in just a few words.\u00a0 I mean, when I think in the terms that you have talked about often when you talk about parenting assignment, shaping our children\u2019s character, helping them understand their identity, relationships and mission.\u00a0 So when I think of the legacy I have received I think of some of the character issues that were built into my life.\u00a0 I think of some of the relational development that happened when I was growing up.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt is kind of the whole package of how your thinking is shaped in the environment that you grow up in.\u00a0 I think for example about things like my mom being very big on telling the truth.\u00a0 You tell the truth!\u00a0 You always tell the truth.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do you hear your mom\u2019s voice today?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, I can hear it in the back of my mind and saying, \u201cAlways tell the truth.\u201d\u00a0 It is a part of the legacy that I think that I was given.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 All those things build into our lives; as you said, \u201cCharacter qualities, the ability to relate to another person, and they help us become the person that we are.\u201d\u00a0 I did some reflecting on the legacy that my parents left me and I wrote down.\u00a0 It was a good legacy, not evil.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMy dad was a good man.\u00a0 He was kind.\u00a0 He was generous.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t cheat people.\u00a0 He paid his bills on time.\u00a0 Sometimes I think when we consider the concept of legacy we think there has to be something high and mighty and noble.\u00a0 Well, certainly it needs to be above the muck and the mire of those matters that are sinful, but sometimes it is just good qualities of a solid character.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Would you say that the legacy that you received from your parents was intentionally transmitted or was it more caught than taught?\u00a0 Was is just them living out their lives in front of you and you observing, or were they purposeful about what they did?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 That is a good question.\u00a0 I think in all honesty, I don\u2019t think my mom and dad probably ever had a planning meeting or a couples get-away or a family get-away where they talked about our family\u2019s mission statement and\u00a0 what we were going to be about and what we were going to try to leave to the next generation.\u00a0 They just lived it and did it.\u00a0 It was caught.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut it was also taught too; purposefully, both my mom and dad taught Sunday school and Church and taught the scriptures to young people.\u00a0 They were intentional about teaching, but I don\u2019t ever recall having a formal family time; a time where you get together as a family and sit down and study the scriptures together.\u00a0 I just think as they lived their lives they were very real people who lived authentic lives that there just wasn\u2019t a lot of plastic or veneer.\u00a0 What you saw in them was really who they were. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Do think it gives couples an edge if they do approach this subject with a little more intentionality; a little more purposefulness?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, that is why I want to talk about this.\u00a0 All of us are in the process of leaving a legacy to the next generation.\u00a0 Now the question is, \u201cWhat is that going to look like?\u00a0 What is going to be the gift you give to your descendants?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tPicture it like a present that will be unwrapped over their lifetime.\u00a0 The gifts you give them; those character qualities you impart, the memories of fun, and laughter, and just enjoying one another and enjoying a family.\u00a0 Those can all be a part of a magnificent, yet intentional gift that you do pass on to the next generation. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I think what would be a real good second project for a person to complete; is not only to write down the legacy you were given, but as you listen to us talk about this today, begin to jot down what do you want your legacy to look like?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow, I am going to tell you what I did with a group of men and you are going to think this is kind of weird, but if you have listened to our broadcast over the years you know that we kind of like to surprise people from time to time.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI had a men\u2019s retreat where there was only a dozen guys that I was leading this get-away for three full days.\u00a0 When they arrived in the remote location where we were meeting in their bedroom, propped up on the pillow in their bed was a tombstone.\u00a0 It was a cardboard tombstone and it had their name on it.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tFor instance:\u00a0 it would have Bob Lepine with the birth-date and a dash, and then it was empty.\u00a0 For the next three days we talked about the legacies that we wanted to leave to the next generation and we talked about what we wanted to have etched on our tombstone.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIn reality, Bob, I think God calls us to etch our lives not on tombstones, but on people\u2019s hearts.\u00a0 I think he calls us to impact people!\u00a0 That is our legacy!\u00a0 It is not the grand accomplishments or the goals that we set.\u00a0 Those are important I don\u2019t want to diminish them.\u00a0 I have enjoyed my work here at FamilyLife and the privilege of leading a ministry, but I believe that a man and a woman\u2019s legacy is much larger than the tasks that they have done.\u00a0 It is about the people that they have loved and about the lives that they have impacted. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat is why I just want to lift your eyes up a little bit and I want you to picture that tombstone with your name on it and that \u2018DASH.\u2019\u00a0 And then picture what could be written underneath those dates when you die?\u00a0 What do you want to be written?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAs you look at the Bible, it is really fascinating.\u00a0 The word legacy is not found anywhere in scripture.\u00a0 Heritage is found!\u00a0 In fact, Proverbs 13:22 says, \u201cA good man leaves an inheritance to his children\u2019s children, but the sinner\u2019s wealth, is laid up for the righteous.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 There is another passage in Proverbs 10:7 that says, \u201cThe memory of the righteous is blessed, but the name of the wicked will rot.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tNow there is a contrast between; in a very simple form, two different types of legacies--The righteous or good person and the wicked or an evil person.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have a feeling, Bob; we are talking to a lot of good people here on the radio.\u00a0 They are in the process of leaving a legacy to the next generation and we just want to come alongside of them and help them be more effective in leading the very finest legacy on the next generation that they possibly can.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob<\/strong>:\u00a0 Your tombstone illustration reminds me of something many of our listeners may have read in Stephen Covey\u2019s book, <em>The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.<\/em>\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe has a very provocative scene where you are attending a funeral and you step forward and you all of a sudden realize that it is your own funeral and he wants you to imagine that it is 7 years from today and you are attending your funeral and 3 people are going to provide eulogies; someone from your family, somebody from your workplace, and somebody from the community, church or wherever you have lived life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe said, \u201cIf it was your funeral today, what would they say about you?\u00a0 If it was your funeral 7 years from now, what do you wish they would say about you and what can you be doing now so that what they say is what you would hope they would say?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right!\u00a0 There is so much about life that comes at us and we just react and we respond and we are not real intentional.\u00a0 You had a slight smile on your face when you asked me the question about, \u201cDid I think my parent\u2019s legacy that they left me was intentional or was it just a part of who they were as they lived their lives.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe reason is, (for your smile) I know, you know a story that I am about to tell here\u2026..:\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI was at a Cardinal Baseball game in their new stadium, a friend of mine invited my son and me to go to a game up there\u2026. Boy!\u00a0 We had some good tickets, Bob!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Okay, just rub it in.\u00a0 Thank you! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 I know you are a big Cardinal fan, too!\u00a0 Anyway, as we were at the game, my friend turned to my son and he said, \u201cWhat one word would you use to describe your father?\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I thought, \u201cThis is going to be good,\u201d as my mind raced.\u00a0 My son just took a second to gather his thoughts and in that length of time I thought of all the words I wished he would say.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t say any of them!\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t any of the words I expected!\u00a0\u00a0 He said, \u201cOh that is easy!\u00a0\u00a0 INTENTIONAL!\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t\u00a0I went, \u201cGive me a break \u2013 that is the best word you can come up with for me?\u201d\u00a0 I really kind of pushed back at that point and honestly I felt a little wounded that that was as good of word that could be used to describe my life. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut since that time I have had some opportunity to reflect on that, plus to confirm it with the other five children who have all nodded their heads and said, \u201cDad that really does kind of describe you a bit.\u201d\u00a0 I have come to the conclusion that \u2018INTENTIONAL\u2019 is not a really bad word.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right! \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you are \u2018INTENTIONAL\u2019 about the right things.\u00a0\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Have good intentions, right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If you have good intentions.\u00a0 That is where this Book that we have opened in front of us here comes in to play.\u00a0 The Bible is calling us to live an intentional life.\u00a0 To be intentional about obeying Him, coming to know Him, placing our faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior, Lord and Master and following Him.\u00a0\u00a0 Consulting Him intentionally about major decisions and minor decisions that we make in life.\u00a0 In the process of all those intentional decisions that we make; if we have kept this Book as the plumb-line and we have listened to God and for the most part followed Him, you can leave a powerful legacy!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI have been impacted by some men and women who have done that and again, you don\u2019t have to be in the ministry, you don\u2019t have to be a pastor or a teacher or a writer of books or a radio show.\u00a0 You just need to live an obedient life to what the Master called you to do.\u00a0 He can use you to impact generations!\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, you have said that we are all going to leave a legacy and it is either a legacy for good or a legacy of mediocrity or a legacy of evil.\u00a0 Do you think there is a universal sense in the heart of man as to what that legacy ought to be?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tDo you think there is something inside each one of us where we affirm together what ought to be the core elements of the legacy any one of us passes on to the next generation?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, I would hope that in our hearts we have this longing to leave a legacy of goodness to the next generation.\u00a0 But as I think of some of the legacies that men have left, you had to wonder what was taking place in their hearts?\u00a0 For instance, what would you say is the legacy of Hitler?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, if you stop and think about what he is remembered for and what he is known for it is evil.\u00a0 It is death and destruction and really evil is the best word I can come up with. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes!\u00a0 You wonder, what took place in his life for him as a man to lose his sense of goodness and become so narcissistic and self-centered that he didn\u2019t want to leave some kind of powerful legacy of goodness to his people and to the nation he attempted to lead.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I guess he thought that if he could annihilate the Jewish race, and have an Aryan nation that he was leaving something good.\u00a0 It is just that his priorities were twisted.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think so!\u00a0 Let me ask you about another legacy that was left.\u00a0 How would you describe the legacy of Winston Churchill?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Certainly, if I lived in the British Empire I would describe it as preserving.\u00a0 He led with courage in Europe\u2019s darkest hour.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 He was a courageous leader of a nation.\u00a0 He knew how to make a tough decision even when everyone didn\u2019t agree with him and you sure can\u2019t disagree with where he ended up taking the British people.\u00a0 He ended up getting the American people involved and ultimately saving that nation.\u00a0\u00a0 Those two legacies, I think are just good reminders that we can leave a legacy of evil to succeeding generations.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, one thing I want to point out Bob, that I think is very, very important.\u00a0 I know that a number of our listeners feel like they have failed in their journey in life.\u00a0 Maybe it was when they were a young person growing up; they made some decisions that were wrong.\u00a0 Perhaps as adults they have gone through some things, experienced some things, and made some choices that they feel like they are going to mark the next generation with their choices in a negative way.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThe story of Christianity and of Jesus Christ is that He redeems!\u00a0 He takes our failures and He delights in taking our ashes and the ash-heap of our lives and carving in to something noble and good.\u00a0 It is to me why Jesus Christ stands out above any other man who has walked the planet.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe offered, not only the route to God through His death on the cross and resurrection and ascension into heaven, but He offered us redemption right now!\u00a0 As we live life and make mistakes He promises to be able to take those wrong choices and we can learn from then and we can pass on to future generations\u2019 lessons they might not have been able to learn if we had not warned them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The message of the gospel is a message of forgiveness for our broken past, transformation for a different today, and then hope for a future that is what God intends \u2013 a future of blessing for us.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And who doesn\u2019t want that?\u00a0 As we wrap up today, I want to just want to challenge the listener today to do two things:\u00a0 sit down with a piece of paper and just jot out what you think was the legacy that you were given by your parents and by your family.\u00a0 Just write it out!\u00a0 Let it be what it is!\u00a0 Okay?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd then secondly I want you to begin to craft and work with and think about how you intentionally (to go back to that word), how you can intentionally leave a legacy of righteousness, godliness and goodness to future generations.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are you going to be handing out a lot of assignments as we talk about this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 I think I may!\u00a0 I want this to be practical.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because I am trying to decide do I want to keep listening based on the number of assignments I am going to be getting. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis<\/strong>:\u00a0 Do you feel that this is too hard?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just want to know what I am getting myself into?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You have listened to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, Bob;
