I always feel like my legs are still there.\u00a0 It\u2019s really interesting.\u00a0 It\u2019s not like they feel normal or anything.\u00a0 But it feels like they\u2019re still there.\u00a0 It\u2019s very interesting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are there times you\u2019ll wake up in the middle of the night and without stopping to think about it, think \u201cI\u2019ll just swing my legs out and get up out of bed\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not as often as I used to.\u00a0 In the beginning I used to always be really surprised by my wheelchair next to my bed.\u00a0 But now I\u2019m pretty used to it.\u00a0 Every once in a while I\u2019ll think, \u201cI want to go for a run.\u201d\u00a0 Or something like that, that I can\u2019t do any more.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The thing that I keep thinking about here is, at a point when your life experienced a radical transformation, you trusted Christ, you began to understand what it means to follow Him and to give your life to Him, and you\u2019re a new creation in Christ.\u00a0 The thing is, the old you had legs, the new you doesn\u2019t.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How do you process that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 The thing that helped me the most was learning that I was whole in Christ, whether or not I had legs isn\u2019t what made me whole.\u00a0 He was more than enough for all of me, I didn\u2019t need anything more.\u00a0 The more that I trusted Him, and I put my faith in Him, the more I just felt whole.\u00a0 I realized I was going to fine without my legs.\u00a0 I was going to be fine as long as I had Him.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t need them as much as I needed Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You said before we came into the studio, that you\u2019ve been working with\u2014is it a physician who creates prosthetics?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, he\u2019s called a prosthetist.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve been working with him for four years?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Longer actually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually longer than that?\u00a0 Yet, it\u2019s interesting to see your demeanor.\u00a0 You have some opinions about why they have not been able to fit you with legs at this point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I\u2019m a difficult case to fit.\u00a0 But I think that everything happens for a reason, and I think there\u2019s a reason I\u2019m not walking now.\u00a0 As I\u2019ve tried to think through that, pray through that and see what the reasons might be, I feel like, it\u2019s just not God\u2019s time yet.\u00a0 I think that He has used my story and me in a way that he had planned to use it with me in my wheelchair.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt has also taught me a tremendous amount of patience, and it has made me a lot more humble for me to be in my wheelchair.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m listening to you say that, and I\u2019m flashing back to the story of January 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, 2000, when you were draped across the railroad tracks and described something supernaturally, almost pushing you down as the train ran over you.\u00a0 Even though your legs were severed, you lost them.\u00a0 The condition of the young lady who had laid down on that track was without hope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2026 had no purpose.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The woman today who has no legs has a mission.\u00a0 She\u2019s on a mission.\u00a0 You\u2019re smiling.\u00a0 There are a lot of people who would say \u201cI don\u2019t get that.\u00a0 How can you smile about that?\u00a0 Do you really believe that God has a purpose?\u00a0 Even in a self-described act of selfishness in trying to take your own life?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Only God can give me this kind of joy.\u00a0 Only knowing Him and having a relationship with Him.\u00a0 Nothing compares to knowing Him.\u00a0 I am on a mission now.\u00a0 You\u2019re right.\u00a0 Because I want people to know that no matter what pain they\u2019re going through, no matter what they\u2019re feeling, no matter what they have in their past, or they\u2019re doing now, God can help them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe can heal that pain, he can bring them out of their situations and their disappointments and he can make them whole again.\u00a0 He can give them a purpose.\u00a0 He has a purpose for them.\u00a0 When He made them, when He created them he had a plan for their lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But, here\u2019s my question for you.\u00a0 The joy that you\u2019re talking about, the hope the purpose, do you have that because you know you\u2019re supposed to, because you\u2019re a Christian\u2014do you know what I\u2019m saying?\u00a0 It\u2019s like\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And she goes to Moody Bible Institute\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, I go to church and they\u2019ve been telling me, \u201cYou find your joy and your hope in Christ so I guess I need to, and I\u2019m on a mission so I need to tell people that I have hope and joy\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I wish people could see her face right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026because that\u2019s my job now.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, that\u2019s not me at all.\u00a0 I will tell you what I think no matter what.\u00a0 That\u2019s just actually how I feel.\u00a0 I tried to find joy in every other area of my life, and nothing else brought me joy.\u00a0 Seeing myself through His eyes, and seeing the world through His eyes and accepting Him into my life, and having Him at the center of things just make everything work a lot differently; it changes everything for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I\u2019m excited because I know Him.\u00a0 I\u2019m happy because I know that I\u2019m exactly where I need to be.\u00a0 I have joy because He has forgiven me, because He gave me a second chance over and over and over again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019ve got more joy with no legs than you ever had when you had your legs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Undoubtedly.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t trade what\u2019s happened to me, what I\u2019ve learned to have them back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As you talk to young people around the country, are you seeing a need for them to find the same spiritual legs that you have found.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Every time I share my story with young people or older people.\u00a0 They all come up to me\u2014almost every single one of them\u2014and tell me that they struggled with suicidal thoughts and depression at one time, they are now struggling or they know somebody who has.\u00a0 So, they want to know how to help them or they want to know how they can be helped.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSuicide and depression is an epidemic in our culture.\u00a0 Eight out of ten people think about suicide and one out of ten try.\u00a0 It\u2019s the third cause of death of those between the ages of 15 and 24.\u00a0 I just want to make any difference that I can in the lives of those people, and those statistics.\u00a0 I know that they don\u2019t have to choose suicide as the answer, it\u2019s not an answer.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a choice to even consider.\u00a0 I want people to realize that there is another way, there is a much better way, it is the only way and that is through Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the ways in which you\u2019ve seen God demonstrate what He\u2019s doing in your life happened when you were baptized right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 When I was baptized, I shared my story for the first time, and it really helped me realize His faithfulness through all of it.\u00a0 He did all of these little things to bring me into a relationship with Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to just stop you for a second.\u00a0 I want to put a timeline on this.\u00a0 Your accident happened January 2, 2000.\u00a0 You began a relationship with Christ in March, right?\u00a0 How long before you were baptized?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was three years later.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019d had some time to truly think about this decision you\u2019d made, before you told your story publicly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even know that people were encouraged to get baptized after they accepted Christ until I started going to a church where I learned that.\u00a0 So, everything\u2014you couldn\u2019t have really seen the fruit in my life until I really started growing spiritually once I got to that church.\u00a0 But when I shared my story, at my baptism that day, I cried like crazy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the end of it, they gave an invitation for people who had not accepted Christ yet, who wanted a relationship with Him, who wanted a new life with Him, and wanted to know they would go to Heaven.\u00a0 My mom raised her hand that day at my baptism.\u00a0 That was just the beginning of God bringing every single one of us in my family to Him.\u00a0 It was an incredible time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you know that?\u00a0 Did you see her out in the congregation raising her hand?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 I saw her.\u00a0 I was actually two people down from her at that time.\u00a0 It was at the end of the service.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What did you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just remember thinking, \u201cThank you God, thank you God\u201d\u00a0 just giving Him praise.\u00a0 I saw Him doing amazing things in my family.\u00a0 I knew that the closer we all were with Him, the better our family life would be, and the more healthy we would be.\u00a0 I just knew the difference it would make in our hearts and in our lives.\u00a0 I wanted her to forgive herself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 She blamed herself for what I did and I knew it wasn\u2019t her fault.\u00a0 I knew it wasn\u2019t my dad\u2019s fault.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t anyone\u2019s fault but my own.\u00a0 I took full responsibility for it and I knew that if she could feel Christ\u2019s forgiveness, she could begin to forgive herself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was she the first person in your family to come to faith?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who was next?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Then it was my dad, then it was my brother.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Before you go on to that.\u00a0 Your dad had a special nickname for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah\u2014How do you know this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We do our research on stuff like this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What was that nickname?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 He called me \u201cSpeedy Two-Shoes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Why did crazy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But he came to faith in Christ, too?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was that dramatic for him to place his faith in Christ?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 It has been incredible.\u00a0 He is one of the largest encouragements in my life now.\u00a0 He loves Christian radio, he listens to radio all the time, he reads his Bible all the time, he\u2019s always speaking\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can we say hi to him right now?\u00a0 We just want to say hi to your dad if he\u2019s listening to the radio.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s just an incredible blessing.\u00a0 I cannot believe\u2014he always says that he praises God for what He\u2019s done in my life.\u00a0 He\u2019s just so grateful for the way He turned my life around, for the way Jesus turned my life around and for the ways he is using me now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What was the turning point for him?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 In Christian radio actually.\u00a0 He listened to Moody radio a lot and that was the biggest thing for him.\u00a0 He started reading his Bible.\u00a0 When I started going to church, I brought my mom with me, and she brought my dad with her.\u00a0 That\u2019s when it all happened.\u00a0 Then, he brought my brother to a men\u2019s conference and that\u2019s when my brother became a Christian.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just thinking, Bob.\u00a0 You think back to the trauma of what Kristen has been through, the lack of hope that you had as a young person.\u00a0 If somehow we could have come to you and told you what was going to occur, would you have believed it as a 15, 16, 17 year old young lady?\u00a0 Would you have believed your family would be transformed by Jesus Christ?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t have believed it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How are they more of a family today than they were back then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re more of a family because we talk about things now.\u00a0 We talk about real life.\u00a0 We talk about what\u2019s hurting us, what helps us, what God is doing in our hearts and in our lives.\u00a0 We pray together and we support each other and we encourage each other.\u00a0 We did some of that before, but it was a lot more surface level, there were a lot more walls.\u00a0 Now we are just completely real with each other, and we have Jesus at the center.\u00a0 He just makes it all work in a completely different way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it works perfectly.\u00a0 There is never any conflict or any disappointment or\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t work\u2014nothing is perfect.\u00a0 But, it is completely different.\u00a0 It is a lot easier now.\u00a0 We know from scripture a much better way to handle problems and we know that God is with us.\u00a0 We know He\u2019s going to carry us through whatever we face.\u00a0 We know that he commands us to forgive one another, so we do that.\u00a0 We mean it, and we love each other more.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You shared your story publically for the first time at your baptism.\u00a0 But then people started saying, would you come share your story with this group or with that group.\u00a0 Did that take you by surprise?\u00a0 Were you a little uncomfortable with that at first?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was very surprising for me.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t expecting that at all.\u00a0 But, because they heard me share my story at my baptism, they knew my story and they knew that it might help some young people.\u00a0 That\u2019s why I decided to share it for the first time after my baptism.\u00a0 It was at a high school youth group in my church.\u00a0 I really just did it because I wanted them to learn from my mistakes, and didn\u2019t want them to have to have anything like that happen to them before they had a real growing relationship with Christ.\u00a0 I just wanted to help them in any way that I could help them grow.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I shared my story and after I shared my story, almost all of them came up to me and told me that they were struggling.\u00a0 They were reaching out for help because they didn\u2019t know how they could face another day or another year.\u00a0 They were all in different situations.\u00a0 I wanted to help them all, but I couldn\u2019t do that.\u00a0 But, I began helping as many kids as I could.\u00a0 I began speaking at other churches and youth events where I was invited to speak.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You began helping them how?\u00a0 What were you doing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was just talking with them, I was just being there for them.\u00a0 I was just loving them.\u00a0 They just needed somebody who understood and who could give them, godly advice.\u00a0 So I tried to do that as best as I could as I was growing spiritually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We don\u2019t realize how huge that is in the life of a teenager, for somebody to come along and say, \u201cI\u2019ll listen, I\u2019ll talk.\u00a0 Just share whatever you want to share.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, but what really gave you the credibility, is that you were willing to be authentic.\u00a0 I mean, you are a living testimony, a living illustration\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 I didn\u2019t pretend like my life was perfect, or like it ever was.\u00a0 I told them exactly what it was, and what it is now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If I was a parent, listening to you right now, I think I might be a little afraid.\u00a0 No, seriously, for young people today growing up in this culture, why do you think young people today seem to be more susceptible to what you\u2019re calling \u201chopelessness and suicide, and despair\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think they\u2019re more impressionable.\u00a0 I think they think more about what other people think about them.\u00a0 They are not content with who they are.\u00a0 They have all the pressures of media to look this way, or get this car or whatever it is.\u00a0 They don\u2019t think they are ever good enough.\u00a0 They don\u2019t think they\u2019ll ever amount to anything.\u00a0 They think that they aren\u2019t beautiful, they think that they\u2019re not special, they don\u2019t know that God made them, created them for a purpose or for a reason.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that, I would be scared as a parent for those reasons too.\u00a0 I think that the best thing that parents can do, though is to be authentic with their kids just like they want their youth leaders to.\u00a0 They need to be the first encouragement in their lives after Christ.\u00a0 Not the youth pastor, not the youth leaders, they need to be involved, they need to ask the questions, they need to have the real vulnerable talks, and they need to be open to whatever they are saying, whatever they\u2019re going through, and whatever their friends are going through.\u00a0 They need to keep the lines of communication open, I guess, because that was one of the problems for me.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t feel like my mom would understand.\u00a0 I thought she would think badly of me, or of my friends.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You started, not only speaking at youth group or some places around town, but now you are getting invitations to travel and speak.\u00a0 And you spoke at the chapel at Moody Bible Institute.\u00a0 You spoke in Christian colleges, I mean it started to just snowball for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I was getting more requests to share my story specifically, than I could even go.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t go all the places I was being invited. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Then at one point, you got a call to come share your story in an unusual setting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I got a call to share my story on Oprah, and that was in 2006.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was only one condition that you gave the producers of Oprah, it was the condition that you would appear on the program.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 I told them that I would be on the show if they would let me share Jesus and my faith, because, that was the biggest part of my story.\u00a0 That was my story, I couldn\u2019t change it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You didn\u2019t have anything to say if you couldn\u2019t talk about Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to go to a bigger issue of your future.\u00a0 I have a feeling there is a listener or two wondering, \u201cI wonder what her dreams are for her life.\u201d\u00a0 Tell us what you\u2019d like to do, and be long haul.\u00a0 You want to be a wife?\u00a0 A mom?\u00a0 Huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that God created me to be a wife and a mother more than anything else.\u00a0 But I also think that He made me to help bring other people into a closer relationship with Him.\u00a0 So, that is my main focus, my main drive right now before I get married and have children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But if you meet the right guy, you are beaming right now.\u00a0 If you meet the right guy, you\u2019re going to go to a Weekend to courage.\u00a0 I think it could have been very easy for a young lady in a hospital bed, waking on January 3, 2000, to have just, given up, and maybe gone ahead and died.\u00a0 But somehow God pursued you and gave you a flicker of hope.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t give into hopelessness but took something that was really a wrong choice, a bad choice at the time, and you turned to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m just thrilled to hear your story of redemption, Kristen, and, to hear of God\u2019s work in your life.\u00a0 I hope you\u2019ll not only share Jesus Christ us today to give a reason for the hope that is within her. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to FamilyLife Today, thanks for joining us.\u00a0 We\u2019ve been hearing a remarkable story of God\u2019s redeeming work in the heart and the life of a young woman this week.\u00a0 A young woman who attempted suicide by laying across railroad tracks, and miraculously, God spared her life.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, I\u2019m just thinking, here we are at a point in the unfolding of this story where all of a sudden, life has meaning and purpose, joy and hope.\u00a0 There\u2019s just this one bummer, and that is, \u201cI don\u2019t have legs anymore.\u201d\u00a0 I don\u2019t mean to sound crass or trivial about it but\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 It\u2019s the result of what took place.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Here is hope re-dawning but, I\u2019m in a wheelchair with no legs.\u00a0 Life is going to be very different from here on out because of a decision I made\u2014an impulsive decision\u2014trying to end my own life.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Well, that young lady joins us again on <em>FamilyLife Today;<\/em> she\u2019s the author of the book, <em>Life in Spite Of I always feel like my legs are still there.\u00a0 It\u2019s really interesting.\u00a0 It\u2019s not like they feel normal or anything.\u00a0 But it feels like they\u2019re still there.\u00a0 It\u2019s very interesting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Are there times you\u2019ll wake up in the middle of the night and without stopping to think about it, think \u201cI\u2019ll just swing my legs out and get up out of bed\u201d?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Not as often as I used to.\u00a0 In the beginning I used to always be really surprised by my wheelchair next to my bed.\u00a0 But now I\u2019m pretty used to it.\u00a0 Every once in a while I\u2019ll think, \u201cI want to go for a run.\u201d\u00a0 Or something like that, that I can\u2019t do any more.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 The thing that I keep thinking about here is, at a point when your life experienced a radical transformation, you trusted Christ, you began to understand what it means to follow Him and to give your life to Him, and you\u2019re a new creation in Christ.\u00a0 The thing is, the old you had legs, the new you doesn\u2019t.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 How do you process that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 The thing that helped me the most was learning that I was whole in Christ, whether or not I had legs isn\u2019t what made me whole.\u00a0 He was more than enough for all of me, I didn\u2019t need anything more.\u00a0 The more that I trusted Him, and I put my faith in Him, the more I just felt whole.\u00a0 I realized I was going to fine without my legs.\u00a0 I was going to be fine as long as I had Him.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t need them as much as I needed Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You said before we came into the studio, that you\u2019ve been working with\u2014is it a physician who creates prosthetics?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, he\u2019s called a prosthetist.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You\u2019ve been working with him for four years?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Longer actually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Actually longer than that?\u00a0 Yet, it\u2019s interesting to see your demeanor.\u00a0 You have some opinions about why they have not been able to fit you with legs at this point.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 I\u2019m a difficult case to fit.\u00a0 But I think that everything happens for a reason, and I think there\u2019s a reason I\u2019m not walking now.\u00a0 As I\u2019ve tried to think through that, pray through that and see what the reasons might be, I feel like, it\u2019s just not God\u2019s time yet.\u00a0 I think that He has used my story and me in a way that he had planned to use it with me in my wheelchair.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt has also taught me a tremendous amount of patience, and it has made me a lot more humble for me to be in my wheelchair.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m listening to you say that, and I\u2019m flashing back to the story of January 2<sup>nd<\/sup>, 2000, when you were draped across the railroad tracks and described something supernaturally, almost pushing you down as the train ran over you.\u00a0 Even though your legs were severed, you lost them.\u00a0 The condition of the young lady who had laid down on that track was without hope.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u2026 had no purpose.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 The woman today who has no legs has a mission.\u00a0 She\u2019s on a mission.\u00a0 You\u2019re smiling.\u00a0 There are a lot of people who would say \u201cI don\u2019t get that.\u00a0 How can you smile about that?\u00a0 Do you really believe that God has a purpose?\u00a0 Even in a self-described act of selfishness in trying to take your own life?\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Only God can give me this kind of joy.\u00a0 Only knowing Him and having a relationship with Him.\u00a0 Nothing compares to knowing Him.\u00a0 I am on a mission now.\u00a0 You\u2019re right.\u00a0 Because I want people to know that no matter what pain they\u2019re going through, no matter what they\u2019re feeling, no matter what they have in their past, or they\u2019re doing now, God can help them.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tHe can heal that pain, he can bring them out of their situations and their disappointments and he can make them whole again.\u00a0 He can give them a purpose.\u00a0 He has a purpose for them.\u00a0 When He made them, when He created them he had a plan for their lives.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 But, here\u2019s my question for you.\u00a0 The joy that you\u2019re talking about, the hope the purpose, do you have that because you know you\u2019re supposed to, because you\u2019re a Christian\u2014do you know what I\u2019m saying?\u00a0 It\u2019s like\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And she goes to Moody Bible Institute\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 I mean, I go to church and they\u2019ve been telling me, \u201cYou find your joy and your hope in Christ so I guess I need to, and I\u2019m on a mission so I need to tell people that I have hope and joy\u2026\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I wish people could see her face right now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong> \u201c\u2026because that\u2019s my job now.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 No, that\u2019s not me at all.\u00a0 I will tell you what I think no matter what.\u00a0 That\u2019s just actually how I feel.\u00a0 I tried to find joy in every other area of my life, and nothing else brought me joy.\u00a0 Seeing myself through His eyes, and seeing the world through His eyes and accepting Him into my life, and having Him at the center of things just make everything work a lot differently; it changes everything for me.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I\u2019m excited because I know Him.\u00a0 I\u2019m happy because I know that I\u2019m exactly where I need to be.\u00a0 I have joy because He has forgiven me, because He gave me a second chance over and over and over again.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019ve got more joy with no legs than you ever had when you had your legs.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Undoubtedly.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t trade what\u2019s happened to me, what I\u2019ve learned to have them back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 As you talk to young people around the country, are you seeing a need for them to find the same spiritual legs that you have found.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 Every time I share my story with young people or older people.\u00a0 They all come up to me\u2014almost every single one of them\u2014and tell me that they struggled with suicidal thoughts and depression at one time, they are now struggling or they know somebody who has.\u00a0 So, they want to know how to help them or they want to know how they can be helped.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSuicide and depression is an epidemic in our culture.\u00a0 Eight out of ten people think about suicide and one out of ten try.\u00a0 It\u2019s the third cause of death of those between the ages of 15 and 24.\u00a0 I just want to make any difference that I can in the lives of those people, and those statistics.\u00a0 I know that they don\u2019t have to choose suicide as the answer, it\u2019s not an answer.\u00a0 It\u2019s not a choice to even consider.\u00a0 I want people to realize that there is another way, there is a much better way, it is the only way and that is through Jesus Christ.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 One of the ways in which you\u2019ve seen God demonstrate what He\u2019s doing in your life happened when you were baptized right?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\u00a0 When I was baptized, I shared my story for the first time, and it really helped me realize His faithfulness through all of it.\u00a0 He did all of these little things to bring me into a relationship with Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to just stop you for a second.\u00a0 I want to put a timeline on this.\u00a0 Your accident happened January 2, 2000.\u00a0 You began a relationship with Christ in March, right?\u00a0 How long before you were baptized?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was three years later.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 So you\u2019d had some time to truly think about this decision you\u2019d made, before you told your story publicly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Right.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t even know that people were encouraged to get baptized after they accepted Christ until I started going to a church where I learned that.\u00a0 So, everything\u2014you couldn\u2019t have really seen the fruit in my life until I really started growing spiritually once I got to that church.\u00a0 But when I shared my story, at my baptism that day, I cried like crazy.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAt the end of it, they gave an invitation for people who had not accepted Christ yet, who wanted a relationship with Him, who wanted a new life with Him, and wanted to know they would go to Heaven.\u00a0 My mom raised her hand that day at my baptism.\u00a0 That was just the beginning of God bringing every single one of us in my family to Him.\u00a0 It was an incredible time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Did you know that?\u00a0 Did you see her out in the congregation raising her hand?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 I saw her.\u00a0 I was actually two people down from her at that time.\u00a0 It was at the end of the service.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What did you think?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 I just remember thinking, \u201cThank you God, thank you God\u201d\u00a0 just giving Him praise.\u00a0 I saw Him doing amazing things in my family.\u00a0 I knew that the closer we all were with Him, the better our family life would be, and the more healthy we would be.\u00a0 I just knew the difference it would make in our hearts and in our lives.\u00a0 I wanted her to forgive herself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Oh, yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 She blamed herself for what I did and I knew it wasn\u2019t her fault.\u00a0 I knew it wasn\u2019t my dad\u2019s fault.\u00a0 It wasn\u2019t anyone\u2019s fault but my own.\u00a0 I took full responsibility for it and I knew that if she could feel Christ\u2019s forgiveness, she could begin to forgive herself.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was she the first person in your family to come to faith?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Who was next?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Then it was my dad, then it was my brother.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Before you go on to that.\u00a0 Your dad had a special nickname for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yeah\u2014How do you know this?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We do our research on stuff like this.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 What was that nickname?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 He called me \u201cSpeedy Two-Shoes.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Why did he say that?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Because I would run around the house and up and down the stairs and everything, like crazy.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But he came to faith in Christ, too?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Was that dramatic for him to place his faith in Christ?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 It has been incredible.\u00a0 He is one of the largest encouragements in my life now.\u00a0 He loves Christian radio, he listens to radio all the time, he reads his Bible all the time, he\u2019s always speaking\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Can we say hi to him right now?\u00a0 We just want to say hi to your dad if he\u2019s listening to the radio.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 He\u2019s just an incredible blessing.\u00a0 I cannot believe\u2014he always says that he praises God for what He\u2019s done in my life.\u00a0 He\u2019s just so grateful for the way He turned my life around, for the way Jesus turned my life around and for the ways he is using me now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 What was the turning point for him?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 In Christian radio actually.\u00a0 He listened to Moody radio a lot and that was the biggest thing for him.\u00a0 He started reading his Bible.\u00a0 When I started going to church, I brought my mom with me, and she brought my dad with her.\u00a0 That\u2019s when it all happened.\u00a0 Then, he brought my brother to a men\u2019s conference and that\u2019s when my brother became a Christian.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob: <\/strong>\u00a0Wow.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I\u2019m just thinking, Bob.\u00a0 You think back to the trauma of what Kristen has been through, the lack of hope that you had as a young person.\u00a0 If somehow we could have come to you and told you what was going to occur, would you have believed it as a 15, 16, 17 year old young lady?\u00a0 Would you have believed your family would be transformed by Jesus Christ?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 I wouldn\u2019t have believed it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 How are they more of a family today than they were back then?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 We\u2019re more of a family because we talk about things now.\u00a0 We talk about real life.\u00a0 We talk about what\u2019s hurting us, what helps us, what God is doing in our hearts and in our lives.\u00a0 We pray together and we support each other and we encourage each other.\u00a0 We did some of that before, but it was a lot more surface level, there were a lot more walls.\u00a0 Now we are just completely real with each other, and we have Jesus at the center.\u00a0 He just makes it all work in a completely different way.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 And it works perfectly.\u00a0 There is never any conflict or any disappointment or\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t work\u2014nothing is perfect.\u00a0 But, it is completely different.\u00a0 It is a lot easier now.\u00a0 We know from scripture a much better way to handle problems and we know that God is with us.\u00a0 We know He\u2019s going to carry us through whatever we face.\u00a0 We know that he commands us to forgive one another, so we do that.\u00a0 We mean it, and we love each other more.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You shared your story publically for the first time at your baptism.\u00a0 But then people started saying, would you come share your story with this group or with that group.\u00a0 Did that take you by surprise?\u00a0 Were you a little uncomfortable with that at first?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 It was very surprising for me.\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t expecting that at all.\u00a0 But, because they heard me share my story at my baptism, they knew my story and they knew that it might help some young people.\u00a0 That\u2019s why I decided to share it for the first time after my baptism.\u00a0 It was at a high school youth group in my church.\u00a0 I really just did it because I wanted them to learn from my mistakes, and didn\u2019t want them to have to have anything like that happen to them before they had a real growing relationship with Christ.\u00a0 I just wanted to help them in any way that I could help them grow.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tSo, I shared my story and after I shared my story, almost all of them came up to me and told me that they were struggling.\u00a0 They were reaching out for help because they didn\u2019t know how they could face another day or another year.\u00a0 They were all in different situations.\u00a0 I wanted to help them all, but I couldn\u2019t do that.\u00a0 But, I began helping as many kids as I could.\u00a0 I began speaking at other churches and youth events where I was invited to speak.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You began helping them how?\u00a0 What were you doing?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 I was just talking with them, I was just being there for them.\u00a0 I was just loving them.\u00a0 They just needed somebody who understood and who could give them, godly advice.\u00a0 So I tried to do that as best as I could as I was growing spiritually.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 We don\u2019t realize how huge that is in the life of a teenager, for somebody to come along and say, \u201cI\u2019ll listen, I\u2019ll talk.\u00a0 Just share whatever you want to share.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, but what really gave you the credibility, is that you were willing to be authentic.\u00a0 I mean, you are a living testimony, a living illustration\u2026\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 I didn\u2019t pretend like my life was perfect, or like it ever was.\u00a0 I told them exactly what it was, and what it is now.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 If I was a parent, listening to you right now, I think I might be a little afraid.\u00a0 No, seriously, for young people today growing up in this culture, why do you think young people today seem to be more susceptible to what you\u2019re calling \u201chopelessness and suicide, and despair\u201d?\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think they\u2019re more impressionable.\u00a0 I think they think more about what other people think about them.\u00a0 They are not content with who they are.\u00a0 They have all the pressures of media to look this way, or get this car or whatever it is.\u00a0 They don\u2019t think they are ever good enough.\u00a0 They don\u2019t think they\u2019ll ever amount to anything.\u00a0 They think that they aren\u2019t beautiful, they think that they\u2019re not special, they don\u2019t know that God made them, created them for a purpose or for a reason.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI think that, I would be scared as a parent for those reasons too.\u00a0 I think that the best thing that parents can do, though is to be authentic with their kids just like they want their youth leaders to.\u00a0 They need to be the first encouragement in their lives after Christ.\u00a0 Not the youth pastor, not the youth leaders, they need to be involved, they need to ask the questions, they need to have the real vulnerable talks, and they need to be open to whatever they are saying, whatever they\u2019re going through, and whatever their friends are going through.\u00a0 They need to keep the lines of communication open, I guess, because that was one of the problems for me.\u00a0 I didn\u2019t feel like my mom would understand.\u00a0 I thought she would think badly of me, or of my friends.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 You started, not only speaking at youth group or some places around town, but now you are getting invitations to travel and speak.\u00a0 And you spoke at the chapel at Moody Bible Institute.\u00a0 You spoke in Christian colleges, I mean it started to just snowball for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I was getting more requests to share my story specifically, than I could even go.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t go all the places I was being invited. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong>\u00a0 Then at one point, you got a call to come share your story in an unusual setting.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, I got a call to share my story on Oprah, and that was in 2006.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 There was only one condition that you gave the producers of Oprah, it was the condition that you would appear on the program.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 I told them that I would be on the show if they would let me share Jesus and my faith, because, that was the biggest part of my story.\u00a0 That was my story, I couldn\u2019t change it.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 You didn\u2019t have anything to say if you couldn\u2019t talk about Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 Exactly.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 I want to go to a bigger issue of your future.\u00a0 I have a feeling there is a listener or two wondering, \u201cI wonder what her dreams are for her life.\u201d\u00a0 Tell us what you\u2019d like to do, and be long haul.\u00a0 You want to be a wife?\u00a0 A mom?\u00a0 Huh?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Kristen:<\/strong>\u00a0 I think that God created me to be a wife and a mother more than anything else.\u00a0 But I also think that He made me to help bring other people into a closer relationship with Him.\u00a0 So, that is my main focus, my main drive right now before I get married and have children.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 But if you meet the right guy, you are beaming right now.\u00a0 If you meet the right guy, you\u2019re going to go to a Weekend to courage.\u00a0 I think it could have been very easy for a young lady in a hospital bed, waking on January 3, 2000, to have just, given up, and maybe gone ahead and died.\u00a0 But somehow God pursued you and gave you a flicker of hope.\u00a0 You didn\u2019t give into hopelessness but took something that was really a wrong choice, a bad choice at the time, and you turned to Him. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI\u2019m just thrilled to hear your story of redemption, Kristen, and, to hear of God\u2019s work in your life.\u00a0 I hope you\u2019ll not only share Jesus Christ
