Life is a challenge.\u00a0 Heaven looks better and better all the time.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt doesn\u2019t mean I don\u2019t still have some things in my bucket list that would be kind of fun, yet I do identify with the words of Paul increasingly.\u00a0 \u201cTo live is Christ, to die is gain.\u201d\u00a0 The question is who are you living for?\u00a0 What are you living for?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You and I sat down and were able to have a conversation with Steven Curtis and Mary Beth Chapman a few months ago when were together at and an event in Minneapolis the seventh annual Orphan Summit.\u00a0 Where, 1300 people from all across the country gathered together, all of them with a passionate commitment to be God\u2019s arms and legs and hands and feet--\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And voice, for those who have no voice.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>To care for the needs of those in foster care, those who need adoption, and those who are growing up in orphanages.\u00a0 It was a great event.\u00a0 In fact, folks ought to start planning now for the 8<sup>th<\/sup> Annual Orphan Summit that\u2019s going to be at the end of April next year in Louisville, Kentucky at Southeast Christian Church.\u00a0 They also ought to be planning to be a part of the Orphan Sunday Weekend that\u2019s coming up November 5<sup>th<\/sup>, 6<sup>th<\/sup>, and 7<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Where, together with the foundation Steven and Mary Beth Chapman have put together, Show Hope, and Focus on the Family and our own Hope For Orphans\u00ae ministry, and other organizations.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to be calling people to reach out and to do something for the orphan.\u00a0 There\u2019s going to be a one hour webcast that Francis and Lisa Chan are hosting that will rally people into action for the cause of the orphan.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I don\u2019t think most people realize what God\u2019s up to.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been in ministry attempting to follow Christ now for four decades.\u00a0 I want to tell you something.\u00a0 There have been a handful of times when I\u2019ve seen God show up, and it is unmistakable that he is doing something a whole lot bigger than any organization, any church, any person, and this is one of those times.\u00a0 He is up to something regarding orphans. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You can find out more about the Orphan Sunday Weekend or those events.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, as I was saying, we were with the Chapmans together at the last Orphan Summit and as we sat down and talked with them about what Show Hope is doing and about their family and how their family is doing following the death of their daughter Maria a couple of years ago, we started talking about Heaven and talking about how what they\u2019ve been through as a family has influenced Steven\u2019s songwriting and the last CD that he recorded.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>(<\/strong>Interview setting)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It had to be cathartic for you to pour a lot of your emotion, a lot of your grieving into music.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I haven\u2019t talked to anybody who has sat down to listen to your last record, and has walked away without being in tears.\u00a0 The process of birthing those songs how was it different than other songs you\u2019ve written, other albums you\u2019ve done?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, to answer that question directly, it was a completely different process.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to even put it in the same category.\u00a0 It\u2019s the reason why it\u2019s even been hard to call \u201cBeauty Will Rise\u201d album, an album.\u00a0 It\u2019s really my psalms.\u00a0 I imagine David\u2014I\u2019ve written a lot of songs where I sat down, and even if God is really moving something in my heart, there\u2019s a part of me thinking, \u201cWhat is the listener, the person on the other end of the radio or CD going to be taking from this, and how do I connect with their life?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the calling of a pastor.\u00a0 You get up and you\u2019re going to share your own life stories, but you\u2019re going to ultimately connect it with where people are.\u00a0 That\u2019s the gift of teaching and I feel like that\u2019s what the music that God has given me over these years, that is the process that he goes through.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, with this, I wasn\u2019t sure I was going to write music ever again, and for sure, I was not going to write songs about this journey, it\u2019s too deep.\u00a0 To honor the pain and honor the loss and honor my wife and my family and myself, the idea of sitting down and writing songs about this was just unthinkable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Song \u201cBeauty will Rise\u201d)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019m reading all these books about Heaven now because I desperately want to know what it looks like and feels like and sounds like and smells like where our little girl is.\u00a0 \u201cGod, I know I\u2019m supposed to want to be in Heaven because I\u2019m supposed to want to be with You, but I want to see Maria.\u00a0 That\u2019s what Heaven is.\u00a0 God, I\u2019m sorry I\u2019m just pouring my heart out.\u201d\u00a0 Because the scripture says, \u201cPour your heart out to the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what that whole process was.\u00a0 It\u2019s like, \u201cGod I feel guilty, I\u2019m sorry for that.\u00a0 Yet, I\u2019m going to just be honest and tell you exactly that I\u2019m feeling.\u201d So I write this song, as I\u2019m sitting there, this psalm. Heaven is this to me God:\u00a0 It\u2019s the face of my little girl.\u00a0 It\u2019s her little maple syrup kiss every day\u2014because she was so messy, and always sticky with whatever she had for breakfast.\u00a0 And when she kissed you, you could pretty much taste whatever her meals were\u2014God, that\u2019s Heaven for me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, as I would pour my heart out to God--and I think it\u2019s what happened with David in the Psalms, it\u2019s what happened as I poured my heart out to God\u2014it\u2019s like, in that, there would be a doorway into the truth that would anchor me down.\u00a0 It\u2019s like, as I\u2019d say \u201cGod, this is really what Heaven is\u2026\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut as I begin to imagine that, I imagine, but also Lord, it is a place where there will be no more orphans, and there will be no more cancer, and there will be no more enemy.\u00a0 So, that\u2019s really why I\u2019ve always referred to this as our psalms.\u00a0 Because so much of it was out of our journey together in grieving and conversations that we were having and all of that.\u00a0 And it was very important in my journey and healing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was also really a struggle.\u00a0 At one point, my wife said, \u201cI hate this album.\u201d\u00a0 And I love this album, but I hate this album because I hate whatever brought it about.\u00a0 So, it was an important part of our journey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019m just curious Mary Beth, the strength that you had\u2014this is something you talk about in your book\u2014in that moment when the tragedy had struck and there you were leaning into God\u2019s faithfulness and pointing your family in that direction.\u00a0 Where does that come from?\u00a0 It\u2019s almost got to be like it\u2019s on automatic pilot, it\u2019s got to click in because that\u2019s what your life has been built on up until that point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you\u2019re going to help bring hope and comfort to your son Will Franklin in that moment, after what he\u2019s gone through, backing up the car and not seeing Maria, the foundation has got to be there\u2014and it was for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>In those first hours and moments when your world has been turned upside-down, I think that clarity of not only tasting and feeling the presence of the Lord, but how you respond to your children, how you gather them up.\u00a0 Like Emily said, \u201cMom you are saying this, or you are saying that.\u201d\u00a0 All the stuff that you hide in your heart your whole life like scripture.\u00a0 You wonder if it will ever come out at the right time.\u00a0 They were telling me that I was comforting them with scripture I don\u2019t remember any of it.\u00a0 Yet, the Lord was really, really present there.\u00a0 When you talk about the fellowship of the suffering and you read all the books about how in that place of suffering is when we really can know Christ the most.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we had the graveside burial, I asked Steven if he would let me just sit with Will Franklin for a little bit.\u00a0 So, everybody left and he and I just sat there together.\u00a0 I just remember telling him, \u201cThis is going to be OK.\u00a0 God is going to do something really big.\u00a0 You know what, it really stinks that we\u2019re sitting here.\u00a0 I know that we all want her back so bad.\u00a0 But we are not going to let the enemy rip us apart.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just remember having such a sweet conversation. He was 17 years old and just sobbed in my chest like a little boy and had her blanket wrapped around his neck.\u00a0 I just remember God just spoke to my soul and said, \u201cYou know what, this is really hard.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to be hard for a long time.\u00a0 It\u2019s probably going to be hard for the rest of your life at some level.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember telling the girls too later, \u201cYou know what, this is what He has called us to, we\u2019re going to do hard.\u00a0 We can do hard.\u00a0 Because we know how it ends.\u201d\u00a0 But, you too feel that closeness to Christ in those times of crisis.\u00a0 But then that very next thought is, \u201cWhy?\u201d Then when the next hard thing happens you think, \u201cCan we have even just a little bit of a reprieve?\u201d Just in the other stuff that comes up.\u00a0 But, that\u2019s why we call it a journey.\u00a0 Because, it\u2019s just up and down, up and down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is a journey, and in our journey, Nancy Leigh DeMoss had given Barbara and me a puritan book <em>Valley of Vision<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><em>Valley of Vision, <\/em>yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, we have that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is a book of prayers, puritan prayers that read like scripture.\u00a0 One of them talks about how you can see the stars from the darkest valley, and in the darkest valley is when your vision is clearest.\u00a0 At the end of Job\u2019s treatise on suffering, he talked at the end of his life, \u201cI used to just talk about You.\u00a0 But, now I know You.\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen You.\u00a0 I\u2019ve experienced You.\u00a0 You\u2019ve transformed me.\u201d\u00a0 And you\u2019d never pick it!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Not in a billion years, you\u2019d never pick that route. You guys are loved.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry that you\u2019ve had to journey through where you\u2019ve been.\u00a0 But I do believe with you Mary Beth, that over your son\u2019s lifetime and our lifetimes, God is going to use this.\u00a0 And it\u2019s not some trite little quoting of Roman\u2019s 8:28.\u00a0 The reality is, somehow the God of the universe has purposes in everything, and He\u2019s going to use it for His purposes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I don\u2019t know what you think about when you hear kids singing \u201cSpring is Coming\u201d but I think of the children in Narnia and the snow starting to melt.\u00a0 The curse of winter has been broken, and life is starting to come back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, thaw.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 That\u2019s our hope.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Honestly Bob, I don\u2019t know where there would be hope to be found anywhere else.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what people would do, I don\u2019t know how a couple like the Chapmans could endure the double loss\u2014not only of their daughter, but of a son who made the error and created the accident that took his sister\u2019s life.\u00a0 I mean what an assignment!\u00a0 But, you can do it.\u00a0 You really can if you know the God of the Bible, and know Jesus Christ, His forgiveness and redemption and you are walking with Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think it does help to know that there are others who have survived the path.\u00a0 Others who, God has taken them intensified.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Heaven is this to me God.\u00a0 It\u2019s the face of my little girl.\u00a0 It\u2019s her little maple syrup kiss because she was so messy and always sticky with whatever she had for breakfast.\u00a0 When she kissed you, you could pretty much taste whatever her meals were.\u00a0 It\u2019s like, \u201cGod, that\u2019s Heaven for me.\u201d\u00a0 But, as I begin to imagine that, then I imagine, \u201cOK, but it also Lord, is a place where there will be no more orphans, and there will be no more cancer, and there will be no more enemy.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>This is <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em> for Friday September 3<sup>rd<\/sup>.\u00a0\u00a0 I'm Bob Lepine along with the President of FamilyLife, Dennis Rainey.\u00a0 We\u2019ll hear from Steven Curtis Chapman and his wife Mary Beth today about Heaven, and about hope. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tAnd welcome to <em>FamilyLife Today<\/em>, thanks for joining us on the Friday edition.\u00a0 I\u2019ve heard you say many times over the last five years\u2014I think in particular\u2014that Heaven looks better and better to you all the time.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, I\u2019ve started signing a few letters, not all the time because someone might think I\u2019m being trite or cute, and I\u2019m really not being that.\u00a0 But, I have three statements.\u00a0 \u201cGod is good. Life is a challenge.\u00a0 Heaven looks better and better all the time.\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt doesn\u2019t mean I don\u2019t still have some things in my bucket list that would be kind of fun, yet I do identify with the words of Paul increasingly.\u00a0 \u201cTo live is Christ, to die is gain.\u201d\u00a0 The question is who are you living for?\u00a0 What are you living for?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You and I sat down and were able to have a conversation with Steven Curtis and Mary Beth Chapman a few months ago when were together at and an event in Minneapolis the seventh annual Orphan Summit.\u00a0 Where, 1300 people from all across the country gathered together, all of them with a passionate commitment to be God\u2019s arms and legs and hands and feet--\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>And voice, for those who have no voice.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>To care for the needs of those in foster care, those who need adoption, and those who are growing up in orphanages.\u00a0 It was a great event.\u00a0 In fact, folks ought to start planning now for the 8<sup>th<\/sup> Annual Orphan Summit that\u2019s going to be at the end of April next year in Louisville, Kentucky at Southeast Christian Church.\u00a0 They also ought to be planning to be a part of the Orphan Sunday Weekend that\u2019s coming up November 5<sup>th<\/sup>, 6<sup>th<\/sup>, and 7<sup>th<\/sup>.\u00a0 Where, together with the foundation Steven and Mary Beth Chapman have put together, Show Hope, and Focus on the Family and our own Hope For Orphans\u00ae ministry, and other organizations.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWe\u2019re going to be calling people to reach out and to do something for the orphan.\u00a0 There\u2019s going to be a one hour webcast that Francis and Lisa Chan are hosting that will rally people into action for the cause of the orphan.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I don\u2019t think most people realize what God\u2019s up to.\u00a0 I\u2019ve been in ministry attempting to follow Christ now for four decades.\u00a0 I want to tell you something.\u00a0 There have been a handful of times when I\u2019ve seen God show up, and it is unmistakable that he is doing something a whole lot bigger than any organization, any church, any person, and this is one of those times.\u00a0 He is up to something regarding orphans. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>You can find out more about the Orphan Sunday Weekend or about the Orphan Summit next spring by going to our website, FamilyLifeToday.com and there\u2019s a link there that will get you the information you need about how you can be involved in either of those events.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, as I was saying, we were with the Chapmans together at the last Orphan Summit and as we sat down and talked with them about what Show Hope is doing and about their family and how their family is doing following the death of their daughter Maria a couple of years ago, we started talking about Heaven and talking about how what they\u2019ve been through as a family has influenced Steven\u2019s songwriting and the last CD that he recorded.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>(<\/strong>Interview setting)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It had to be cathartic for you to pour a lot of your emotion, a lot of your grieving into music.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I haven\u2019t talked to anybody who has sat down to listen to your last record, and has walked away without being in tears.\u00a0 The process of birthing those songs how was it different than other songs you\u2019ve written, other albums you\u2019ve done?\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Well, to answer that question directly, it was a completely different process.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to even put it in the same category.\u00a0 It\u2019s the reason why it\u2019s even been hard to call \u201cBeauty Will Rise\u201d album, an album.\u00a0 It\u2019s really my psalms.\u00a0 I imagine David\u2014I\u2019ve written a lot of songs where I sat down, and even if God is really moving something in my heart, there\u2019s a part of me thinking, \u201cWhat is the listener, the person on the other end of the radio or CD going to be taking from this, and how do I connect with their life?\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s the calling of a pastor.\u00a0 You get up and you\u2019re going to share your own life stories, but you\u2019re going to ultimately connect it with where people are.\u00a0 That\u2019s the gift of teaching and I feel like that\u2019s what the music that God has given me over these years, that is the process that he goes through.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, with this, I wasn\u2019t sure I was going to write music ever again, and for sure, I was not going to write songs about this journey, it\u2019s too deep.\u00a0 To honor the pain and honor the loss and honor my wife and my family and myself, the idea of sitting down and writing songs about this was just unthinkable.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t(Song \u201cBeauty will Rise\u201d)\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019m reading all these books about Heaven now because I desperately want to know what it looks like and feels like and sounds like and smells like where our little girl is.\u00a0 \u201cGod, I know I\u2019m supposed to want to be in Heaven because I\u2019m supposed to want to be with You, but I want to see Maria.\u00a0 That\u2019s what Heaven is.\u00a0 God, I\u2019m sorry I\u2019m just pouring my heart out.\u201d\u00a0 Because the scripture says, \u201cPour your heart out to the Lord.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tThat\u2019s what that whole process was.\u00a0 It\u2019s like, \u201cGod I feel guilty, I\u2019m sorry for that.\u00a0 Yet, I\u2019m going to just be honest and tell you exactly that I\u2019m feeling.\u201d So I write this song, as I\u2019m sitting there, this psalm. Heaven is this to me God:\u00a0 It\u2019s the face of my little girl.\u00a0 It\u2019s her little maple syrup kiss every day\u2014because she was so messy, and always sticky with whatever she had for breakfast.\u00a0 And when she kissed you, you could pretty much taste whatever her meals were\u2014God, that\u2019s Heaven for me.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut, as I would pour my heart out to God--and I think it\u2019s what happened with David in the Psalms, it\u2019s what happened as I poured my heart out to God\u2014it\u2019s like, in that, there would be a doorway into the truth that would anchor me down.\u00a0 It\u2019s like, as I\u2019d say \u201cGod, this is really what Heaven is\u2026\u201d \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tBut as I begin to imagine that, I imagine, but also Lord, it is a place where there will be no more orphans, and there will be no more cancer, and there will be no more enemy.\u00a0 So, that\u2019s really why I\u2019ve always referred to this as our psalms.\u00a0 Because so much of it was out of our journey together in grieving and conversations that we were having and all of that.\u00a0 And it was very important in my journey and healing. \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIt was also really a struggle.\u00a0 At one point, my wife said, \u201cI hate this album.\u201d\u00a0 And I love this album, but I hate this album because I hate whatever brought it about.\u00a0 So, it was an important part of our journey.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I\u2019m just curious Mary Beth, the strength that you had\u2014this is something you talk about in your book\u2014in that moment when the tragedy had struck and there you were leaning into God\u2019s faithfulness and pointing your family in that direction.\u00a0 Where does that come from?\u00a0 It\u2019s almost got to be like it\u2019s on automatic pilot, it\u2019s got to click in because that\u2019s what your life has been built on up until that point.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tIf you\u2019re going to help bring hope and comfort to your son Will Franklin in that moment, after what he\u2019s gone through, backing up the car and not seeing Maria, the foundation has got to be there\u2014and it was for you.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>In those first hours and moments when your world has been turned upside-down, I think that clarity of not only tasting and feeling the presence of the Lord, but how you respond to your children, how you gather them up.\u00a0 Like Emily said, \u201cMom you are saying this, or you are saying that.\u201d\u00a0 All the stuff that you hide in your heart your whole life like scripture.\u00a0 You wonder if it will ever come out at the right time.\u00a0 They were telling me that I was comforting them with scripture I don\u2019t remember any of it.\u00a0 Yet, the Lord was really, really present there.\u00a0 When you talk about the fellowship of the suffering and you read all the books about how in that place of suffering is when we really can know Christ the most.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tWhen we had the graveside burial, I asked Steven if he would let me just sit with Will Franklin for a little bit.\u00a0 So, everybody left and he and I just sat there together.\u00a0 I just remember telling him, \u201cThis is going to be OK.\u00a0 God is going to do something really big.\u00a0 You know what, it really stinks that we\u2019re sitting here.\u00a0 I know that we all want her back so bad.\u00a0 But we are not going to let the enemy rip us apart.\u201d\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI just remember having such a sweet conversation. He was 17 years old and just sobbed in my chest like a little boy and had her blanket wrapped around his neck.\u00a0 I just remember God just spoke to my soul and said, \u201cYou know what, this is really hard.\u00a0 It\u2019s going to be hard for a long time.\u00a0 It\u2019s probably going to be hard for the rest of your life at some level.\u201d\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tI remember telling the girls too later, \u201cYou know what, this is what He has called us to, we\u2019re going to do hard.\u00a0 We can do hard.\u00a0 Because we know how it ends.\u201d\u00a0 But, you too feel that closeness to Christ in those times of crisis.\u00a0 But then that very next thought is, \u201cWhy?\u201d Then when the next hard thing happens you think, \u201cCan we have even just a little bit of a reprieve?\u201d Just in the other stuff that comes up.\u00a0 But, that\u2019s why we call it a journey.\u00a0 Because, it\u2019s just up and down, up and down.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is a journey, and in our journey, Nancy Leigh DeMoss had given Barbara and me a puritan book <em>Valley of Vision<\/em>.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><em>Valley of Vision, <\/em>yes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes, we have that.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>It is a book of prayers, puritan prayers that read like scripture.\u00a0 One of them talks about how you can see the stars from the darkest valley, and in the darkest valley is when your vision is clearest.\u00a0 At the end of Job\u2019s treatise on suffering, he talked at the end of his life, \u201cI used to just talk about You.\u00a0 But, now I know You.\u00a0 I\u2019ve seen You.\u00a0 I\u2019ve experienced You.\u00a0 You\u2019ve transformed me.\u201d\u00a0 And you\u2019d never pick it!\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Steven:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Mary Beth:<\/strong>\u00a0 No.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Not in a billion years, you\u2019d never pick that route. You guys are loved.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry that you\u2019ve had to journey through where you\u2019ve been.\u00a0 But I do believe with you Mary Beth, that over your son\u2019s lifetime and our lifetimes, God is going to use this.\u00a0 And it\u2019s not some trite little quoting of Roman\u2019s 8:28.\u00a0 The reality is, somehow the God of the universe has purposes in everything, and He\u2019s going to use it for His purposes.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I don\u2019t know what you think about when you hear kids singing \u201cSpring is Coming\u201d but I think of the children in Narnia and the snow starting to melt.\u00a0 The curse of winter has been broken, and life is starting to come back.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Yes, thaw.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>Yes.\u00a0 That\u2019s our hope.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Dennis:<\/strong>\u00a0 Honestly Bob, I don\u2019t know where there would be hope to be found anywhere else.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know what people would do, I don\u2019t know how a couple like the Chapmans could endure the double loss\u2014not only of their daughter, but of a son who made the error and created the accident that took his sister\u2019s life.\u00a0 I mean what an assignment!\u00a0 But, you can do it.\u00a0 You really can if you know the God of the Bible, and know Jesus Christ, His forgiveness and redemption and you are walking with Him.\n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\t<strong>Bob:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0 <\/strong>I think it does help to know that there are others who have survived the path.\u00a0 Others who, God has taken them down the path and He has been with them, to hear their story and to hear their faith.\u00a0 I think it strengthens your own.\u00a0 \n\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t<p>\n\t\t\t\tMary Beth has done a great job in
